- 0:00When it sounds too bad to be true, there's a story behind
- 0:05that. This is your daily message from
- 0:07Chad #1160 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:14you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16This message is dedicated to Jason Sloan on his birthday.
- 0:19Happy Birthday Jason. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:23You think you're too smart to be fooled, but upgraded thinking
- 0:25knows you don't get fooled by lies, you get fooled by facts
- 0:28arranged to frighten you. Here's the story.
- 0:33In 1997, a 14 year old named Nathan Zoner walked into a
- 0:36science fair with a project called How Gullible Are We?
- 0:41He handed 59th graders a warning about the chemical dihydrogen
- 0:45monoxide DHMO. This chemical is colorless,
- 0:49odorless, tasteless. It kills thousands of people
- 0:52every year, mostly by accidental inhalation.
- 0:55It's found in the tumors of terminal cancer patients.
- 0:58It's used in nuclear power plants and in cruel animal
- 1:01research. Companies.
- 1:03Dump it in our rivers and it's still legal.
- 1:06He asked the students what should be done about it. 43
- 1:09voted to ban it. 6 weren't sure. Only one saw what was going on.
- 1:15In 2004, a California city in Orange County scheduled a
- 1:18council vote on banning this substance after a paralegal
- 1:21convinced city officials of the danger.
- 1:24In 2013, two radio disc jockeys caused a panic in Lee County,
- 1:28Florida, when they announced this chemical was coming out of
- 1:31their taps. The local utility began
- 1:33receiving calls about the water being unsafe from residents.
- 1:38A utility spokesperson had to send an e-mail to all the media
- 1:41outlets that there was nothing to be concerned about and the
- 1:43county's water supply was safe. You see, the chemical DHMO,
- 1:48dihydrogen monoxide, is also known as H2O.
- 1:53It's water. Every single claim was true.
- 1:58Water does kill people who inhale it.
- 2:00It is in tumors because it's in everything.
- 2:04And nothing was a lie. And that's the whole trick.
- 2:07The listeners weren't stupid. They were doing what humans do.
- 2:11They read the frame instead of the facts.
- 2:13Nobody gave them a comparison. Nobody gave them a baseline.
- 2:16Nobody said compared to what similar sentences are being run
- 2:21on you every day. Maybe not about water.
- 2:25It may be about the economy. It may be about your competitor.
- 2:29It could be about your kids school, a health trend
- 2:32supplement, or a city initiative.
- 2:34There are all kinds of stories out there aimed to get your
- 2:37attention. Real facts, True facts, selected
- 2:42and stacked until the ordinary thing looks like a monster.
- 2:46The uncomfortable thing about the DHMO hoax is that the cure
- 2:49isn't blanket disbelief. It's good to be skeptical, but
- 2:53not cynical. Cynicism is just gullibility
- 2:56taken to the other extreme. You're still letting a rule do
- 3:00your thinking for you. Separate the nonsensical from
- 3:04the plausible by being more methodical, more voracious for
- 3:08insight, and more patient with details than everyone else.
- 3:12You don't have to be a genius, just more diligent than most.
- 3:15The ancient prophets gave their students wise advice.
- 3:19Test the spirits. So dihydrogen monoxide is not
- 3:23dangerous and you should drink more of it.
- 3:27But the way that whipped up people's fear is probably
- 3:30happening with something else on you right now.
- 3:33There's something you actually care about, a technology
- 3:36narrative, some story that caught your ear and elicited
- 3:39your fears. The cure isn't to disbelieve
- 3:42everything. The cure is to slow down and ask
- 3:46the question. A six year old asks why, and
- 3:50maybe it needs to be asked again.
- 3:52Two rounds of why would have killed that petition in the
- 3:55hallway. 2 rounds of why would kill most of what scares you
- 4:00today. The better story to tell
- 4:02yourself is I ask why twice before I believe it Once.
- 4:07Tell me a story of when you almost got fooled up.
- 4:10From chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 4:14what's something everybody believes that you've stopped
- 4:17believing. You can get a free copy of my
