- 0:47Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:51My name is Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian sigla.
- 0:54What's up buddy? Buddy.
- 0:56It is late night on Saturday after a long.
- 1:00Fun-filled day at college football where we see the Hokies
- 1:04take a win, 3831 over Duke. Did you have some Maalox during
- 1:11that game? Man, my anxiety was running like
- 1:15full bore that. Whole game dude.
- 1:18And you know, we got the word as things were getting close to
- 1:24kick-off. We're like, okay well we knew
- 1:25that probably the secondary was going to be thinner than it was
- 1:31last week and thinner than we would want.
- 1:34And that was confirmed what I wanted, 21 players out, how many
- 1:41starters Curtis give us the rundown here.
- 1:43All right. Well let me just give you the
- 1:44names of the primary contributors 21 out.
- 1:47Total including starting free safety Divine Diablo backup
- 1:53boundary safe boundary safety Jr.
- 1:55Walker too deep cornerback Devin, Taylor starting,
- 2:00cornerback Armani Chapman, Starting cornerback Jermaine
- 2:05Waller. Starting back or Alan Tisdale.
- 2:11And another, I'm going to consider Brian, Murray another
- 2:15starting quarterback out. You say, we thought in the week
- 2:19there would be a few guys. Yeah, this isn't even thin, this
- 2:24is a charcoal 34 best for best. Quarterbacks are not even not
- 2:28playing or best quarterbacks. And basically the safety dove
- 2:32with the exception that Kion to Jenkins and Terry Rodgers gone.
- 2:37On top of that, we already need J.
- 2:38Hamm was going to be out and then we find out.
- 2:41Ron Smith is out. So we got who's the defensive
- 2:45coordinator, isn't there? We knew that.
- 2:47Luckily, you've got who called one hell of a game last weekend
- 2:50against NC State, not there. So, who called The Game Cards?
- 2:58The report was, we did it back committee between jet Tyler and
- 3:03Tracy claeys. And it's just like, as we're
- 3:08sitting going up through the week, you know, we read things
- 3:10and we're seeing okay, it's going to be, it's going to be
- 3:13some different things when that stuff came out and that stuff
- 3:17came out, as I got home from playing golf today.
- 3:19And I started looking and I was just like this, this is good and
- 3:23I know we highlighted some of these flaws but when you take a
- 3:27whole back in and you're throwing these young guys, we
- 3:32you like their tape Dorian strong, the deer Thompson good.
- 3:35And players starting? Yeah it's scary and you're
- 3:40talking about guys. These are those names.
- 3:43Way down was counter Banks, hunter green, never heard of
- 3:47them. Tyler Matheny started free
- 3:51safety, kyanka obviously their last week at boundary safety.
- 3:56I mean it was just wow. And then as the game got into
- 4:02its had no clue what to expect and And Ron you know what we're
- 4:07going to do here in the next little while it's just kind of
- 4:10run down a little bit of everything and I'm going to let
- 4:13you give that man because I feel like there's some things you
- 4:16want to talk about being sort of our expert here and I'm going to
- 4:19fill it with some stuff I've got.
- 4:21But what do you want to kick it off with?
- 4:22We're going to kick it off with the offense because there's
- 4:27there was a lot going on with that in this game.
- 4:29I know we talked about the defense and all the starters
- 4:32that are out, we're going to get to that.
- 4:33But I mean the, The game is kind of how the offense looked in the
- 4:38first half and how the offense looked in the second half and
- 4:41look for luggage coming out. Yeah, it looks real sluggish
- 4:45coming out. Looks like we just never got
- 4:47into a good Rhythm, pretty much the whole first half, you know,
- 4:53play-calling was a little suspect right up the right out
- 4:57the gate, you know, we were running a lot of outside Zone to
- 5:00the short side of the field, which right?
- 5:03You know, you shake your head at you're like, okay.
- 5:05Okay. Well, you know you got.
- 5:08You got these guys that can get to the edge but you're you're
- 5:11shortening where that edge is your shortening where that
- 5:14running Ali's going to be and in stop Braun, you've always told
- 5:19me is executing that short Side Run play.
- 5:24It is difficult for the offensive line.
- 5:26Yeah, yeah. And I mean if your if your
- 5:28attack on you're trying to get to that edge and try to drive
- 5:33your man up feel, but also get make sure you can All them off.
- 5:37If you make that shorter it makes that running a lie that
- 5:40much smaller and the margin for error that much smaller and at
- 5:44some point that gives safeties more time to come up and make
- 5:49plays and make some feels outside the tackles there.
- 5:53So it's it's just, it's not a good situation when you see that
- 5:57many calls and we had a lot of those stack together with a lot
- 6:03of Fades so a lot of stuff outside the Purrs outside the
- 6:06hashes in the first half, shots downfield, nothing really in
- 6:10the, in the intermediate Zone to kind of make them, you play all
- 6:15areas of the feel there. So they were pretty much content
- 6:18playing kind of a cover three on us and, you know, let us take
- 6:24the shots and then stack the box with eight guys and try to stop
- 6:29the run in the first half and they were, they had some success
- 6:32with it, man. They did.
- 6:33I mean I'll let you go. Here, it will feel like the
- 6:37Danville shots were just very at inopportune times.
- 6:39I mean, we take a look at the first play of the game.
- 6:42Is a deep shot, and kavion drops it.
- 6:43So, if you feel like that's a good call, but it's one of those
- 6:47things. All right?
- 6:49You already know your thin the defense if you hit it great.
- 6:53But hey, now your second and ten, what happens?
- 6:55That first drive run. We drop the Deep ball.
- 6:59We run a short Side Run and we lose yardage and we have to
- 7:03punt. Yep.
- 7:04So it's just One of those things where it's just like, we missed
- 7:07two passes and the next thing, you know, after good defensive
- 7:10series were given the ball right back, but it baffles me and I
- 7:16know you're going to hit both halves but we don't see
- 7:19Crossroads we don't see drags, we don't see hooking up because
- 7:25the one thing I've noticed is they were loading the Box.
- 7:29Yeah. Now and if you'll say I'm a
- 7:33while here eventually it started not work.
- 7:35But those Danville shots. It just it drives me a little
- 7:40mad. Sometimes I agree ban and you
- 7:43know I don't mind taking a shot here there.
- 7:46You definitely want to Braxton Burmeister throws.
- 7:50A good deep ball. He does not have the arm
- 7:53strength that our other two quarterbacks have, but when he
- 7:57throws it on time, it's a pretty ball.
- 8:00So I have no problem with with the shots and I like the idea,
- 8:04but I just feel like the play calling flow wasn't there.
- 8:08Like those those plays didn't really make sense in a cohesive
- 8:11fashion of trying to like set something up with the defense
- 8:16that and I think Burmeister missed a couple easy throws
- 8:19after that, that big drop early on.
- 8:22So he had a hit a hit, a pretty good throws.
- 8:25A little under thrown to Tavian Robinson and then as he's
- 8:30getting both hands on it, Defender comes in knocks the
- 8:34ball down there. And then after that it seemed
- 8:37like he just didn't he lost a little bit of confidence with
- 8:41with throwing things that weren't just kind of those those
- 8:43shoulder Fades and we struggled past the bulb most of the game
- 8:49but also especially in the first half, trying to get some some
- 8:51plays down the field. Oh yeah I mean I noticed it was
- 8:54doing all throughout the first have.
- 8:56I've got I've just solved that bypass not a good pass bad pass,
- 9:00so it really stinks that that happened and I mean the the It's
- 9:05the numbers. I mean Braxton was under 50%
- 9:08last week, he was well under 50 percent this week and it shows
- 9:13that he is, he's not the passer, his legs are great, but it's
- 9:20just kind of showing he's not the passer and and yeah, and
- 9:25it's for efficiency that it is necessarily him not being able
- 9:29to get the ball out there. I mean, yeah, I don't mind the
- 9:34incomplete. I mean, They're going to come
- 9:36especially if you're taking shots like that, but it seemed
- 9:39like he let, you know, a play here, affect him later in the
- 9:44driver later later in the game. So he eventually settled in a
- 9:48little bit even though the passing never really picked up
- 9:51of did look like his confidence got better or it felt like he
- 9:54was wasn't overthinking it if that makes sense.
- 9:58Because there was a portion in the first half there where he
- 10:00look like he was thinking about every throw and that's not
- 10:02something you want to do. No, not at all, not at all.
- 10:06So I mean, I'm going to give this a be kudos to Duke.
- 10:08They did put some tight coverage on our guys especially some of
- 10:12those some of those Fades. I mean even when there was a
- 10:16good ball, they had guys there to knock it down, just like with
- 10:21with Tavian Robinson on that first deep one.
- 10:24You know we eventually got a couple one where at on the first
- 10:28touchdown Drive Tavian Robinson stepped up again after a couple
- 10:32- place for him and made a big play down the sideline and then
- 10:36we were able to hit Mitchell over the over the middle there
- 10:41for a touchdown right at this thing right up the middle of the
- 10:44field. Yes.
- 10:45And and let's talk about that a little bit, you know, we got a
- 10:50touchdown on that drive and it was on a it was a 15-yard seen
- 10:55for the touchdown and I was wondering to myself.
- 10:59Why are we doing that more? I feel like the middle of the
- 11:06field is something that we just do not attack enough when we do
- 11:11attack it. It's pretty.
- 11:12It's very like RPO. Like either, you know, a quick.
- 11:17Yep. Quick slant or something like
- 11:18that. In the RPO, we don't do a whole
- 11:20lot, a very good job of attacking that like 10 to 20,
- 11:24yard range of the field, you know, with a scene with the Dig
- 11:29and things that can really mess with the linebackers and
- 11:32especially with our running game operating, as well as it is.
- 11:36Like, why aren't we doing things that are going to make the
- 11:39linebackers have to pick their poison?
- 11:41Or you're a in the mentioned earlier?
- 11:43We saw more loading of the boxes we can we do it again.
- 11:45Sent equate. Obviously it's the four-man
- 11:47front First Agreement front but the piece about attacking the
- 11:51middle of field. It's just like you start doing a
- 11:55lot of things. When you start attacking, it'll
- 11:57feel a the safeties who are coming further up.
- 11:59We'll have to go further back easier, online course, First,
- 12:04the can't The Leverage, they have to guess on Leverage,
- 12:07right? They can't immediately.
- 12:10What we were doing is they easily get that outside leverage
- 12:12and just run out of bounds or some good passes as you
- 12:15mentioned. But essentially, the balls had
- 12:17to be thrown out of bounds because of how this guy's
- 12:19leverage. But what really pisses me off
- 12:22about Rancor Nielsen. And I'm going to put the blame
- 12:25on him because he is the uncle coordinator.
- 12:28Some people will say, well, you know, foods that no brand milk
- 12:31or Nelson's the offensive coordinator, Later.
- 12:35We have guys on this team that if we were to be consistently
- 12:40getting in space in the middle of the field, it would be really
- 12:46good and to your point I think Brad has his Excel spreadsheet
- 12:53and right now he's deleted. Those pages concerning the
- 12:58middle of the field. He lost the pages that had the
- 13:04Scenes and the digs and all those crossers that we love.
- 13:09Got to watch come to fruition on tape and then hey we're not
- 13:13seeing it because they're not calling it.
- 13:17Yeah I'm right there with you man but again I'm going to give
- 13:21a little kudos to do they did a good job of scheming us up and
- 13:26kind of taken away in the passing game.
- 13:28Some of the things we like to do early on but I did like as the
- 13:36the first half wore on. We started to adjust.
- 13:40To that with the defensive front was throwing at us.
- 13:42So we could get some things going in the running game,
- 13:45particularly some of the things we were doing with motion to
- 13:47kind of get our numbers better, so we could attack them inside
- 13:52the tackles, and then work in the outside Zone.
- 13:56And I will say, man, I mean, we said it last week, I'm going to
- 13:59say it again. Herbert, getting to the edge.
- 14:01I mean, I didn't think he was as fast as he is getting to the
- 14:05edge and a couple times. I thought, you know, the
- 14:07defender that was said in the edge Chatham flanked and he was
- 14:10still able to get there and then get up field and he's a guy that
- 14:13does not go out of bounds. You see a couple times, he had a
- 14:17lie out of bounds and he would like put his foot in the dirt,
- 14:20come back inside, and get another five or six yards.
- 14:23Exactly. And did he have a day-to-day
- 14:26man? 358, all-purpose yards, two
- 14:29touchdowns and there were pieces where when he got the ball,
- 14:36especially I know you're talking first half, but as we got to the
- 14:39End of the first half, he's getting the ball and he was
- 14:42getting up field. Yeah, I'm going to hit it more
- 14:45on the in the second half and it got while but he's a real deal
- 14:53and black shirt look better today.
- 14:57It was kind of coming together there.
- 14:59Yeah, Blackshear did look better.
- 15:01I think they had him were involved in the game plan with a
- 15:03ransom, or more 21 Personnel this week than they did last
- 15:08week, especially in the first half.
- 15:10I think we need to do a better job of getting Blackshear going
- 15:14in the passing game. I don't think he had a single
- 15:16Target today in the passing game.
- 15:19If he did I might have missed it but he did a good job in the
- 15:24running game and they did a good job of getting him the ball
- 15:28where he could kind of work in space.
- 15:30A little bit in the running game there.
- 15:32So I liked what they did with him.
- 15:34But I mean Herbert is just he's a full band out there.
- 15:39I said Last week we got lead back potential.
- 15:41I'm going to go ahead and say it.
- 15:42He's the fucking lead back. He is Ali and and he's the guy
- 15:46that can carry the load. He can make the big play he can
- 15:49he's he do it all guy. What I also liked and it wasn't.
- 15:54I saw it in the first half, I saw more than second half wide.
- 15:57Receiver blocking was really good this week.
- 16:00Yeah because when he got those edges he had some room to work
- 16:04when when Burmeister was running some of those outside zones and
- 16:08sweeps, Had guys up in the second level that were wide
- 16:12receivers making some plays, I will call out in particular,
- 16:15Caleb Smith and Trey Turner. I saw them doing some really
- 16:19good stuff blocking at the wide receiver position.
- 16:21So shout out there but I mean bad first half.
- 16:27I mean, it probably as bad as I could expected from an offensive
- 16:30perspective, in the first half, go to halftime up 10-7.
- 16:34Yeah. All right, we saw that from the
- 16:37offense defense. Obviously.
- 16:39We had a pretty good for a craft, you know, basically
- 16:45defense shut them out. So what did you shoot in the
- 16:47defense in the first half? Yeah, I'm going to say, just
- 16:51just, I mean, I think this is obvious, but Kudos all around to
- 16:55the guys that had to step up that.
- 16:57Oh my God. Yeah, maybe either weren't
- 16:58expecting to play at all, or weren't expecting to play as
- 17:01much as they did this week and just went out there and did
- 17:04their thing particular, shout-out to a Dory and strong.
- 17:08I think he had a really Good game never was out of position.
- 17:13So I think that's the big thing you like to see from for guys.
- 17:17Yeah, that guy's that young and guys, that hadn't had a lot of
- 17:21playing experience, you know. Some of the other things are
- 17:26going to come with time, you know, the play making and things
- 17:28like that, but if you put yourself in a spot to make the
- 17:31play every time, you know, things are going to happen, man.
- 17:36Because even if even if you don't make the play, You're
- 17:39impacting the play and potentially somebody else can
- 17:41come in there and clean things up for you.
- 17:43So if you're in the right spot, that that's half the damn battle
- 17:47right there and they were there the whole night and in the cage
- 17:51that they made a couple, a couple plays there.
- 17:54I'm going to give a another shout out to this man.
- 17:57Tyler Matheny he had himself a day.
- 18:02You know, we talked about last week what can't they Jenkins was
- 18:05able to do in his first start will Tyler Matheny had his first
- 18:08start this week and holy met he let everybody know that.
- 18:13Yeah he's probably not going to be your front line guy but he's
- 18:16a guy that can come in there. You know, if Devon Diablo has
- 18:20another another time where he has to miss miss time, it comes
- 18:24There and fill in admirably for a game or two.
- 18:28He's a guy that came up made some really good plays in The
- 18:31Run game to stop them. Some of those outside runs and
- 18:36some of the runs up the Middle where maybe we were out of
- 18:39position along the front seven, he was able to come up in and
- 18:44help and run support and then he had an interception there.
- 18:49So that that really kind of set us up.
- 18:53It set us up A big but the tip ball piece.
- 18:55Again it goes back to what you talked about with Dorian.
- 18:58He was in the right spot. Yep he would he work middle.
- 19:02He was middle of the field and that covered three.
- 19:05The ball gets tipped. He's not, he's not over here,
- 19:10he's not over there. He's exactly, we're supposed to
- 19:11be. When that ball got tipped, all
- 19:12he had to do was kind of just steps up.
- 19:14Jump, make the catch? Yep, I think it was actually
- 19:17Jenkins that was in, in man on that.
- 19:20He had a little bit of a little Trail technique and With the
- 19:25Matheny was playing over the top, saw the throw receiver
- 19:30wasn't able to handle it, Matheny stepped up, make the
- 19:32play right where he needed to be.
- 19:34And again, that's unbelievable. When I think we've been talking
- 19:37about some of the coaching staff changes all the time.
- 19:43Kind of your maybe we're seeing your to of Justin Hamilton at
- 19:47the safety position. Really getting his footing.
- 19:51Also, give Ryan Smith is Ryan Smith, clearly up until Well,
- 19:54but the latter half of this week, he was a gallant more on
- 19:57filled with them and we're seeing it, we're seeing more
- 20:00discipline. We're seeing guys, stay in the
- 20:02right lane, we're seeing got a leverage, right?
- 20:04And that is that's big, but I feel like maybe a few years we
- 20:11hadn't seen it as crisp. Yeah.
- 20:15Maybe my eyes had anything, maybe, maybe professionalize
- 20:18like and I do continue profession.
- 20:20Brian. Take no, no, we were doing the
- 20:22right things. Okay.
- 20:23Well, It different to me now, but Brian something else I
- 20:29noticed today. Allen says, that without dip,
- 20:33notice it from in the first half the morning, the second loved X,
- 20:39the death, but against an offense like this, this is where
- 20:41you need Tisdale and his range there were times where decks was
- 20:45essentially over in the slot. The way they had the alignment,
- 20:49yep, shouldn't be out there and and they, they made it a few
- 20:53times. Yes.
- 20:54Yeah. I mean if you've got decks mixed
- 20:56matched up, either man-to-man or in kind of a primary Zone
- 21:01responsibility against a guy like gray and a guy like more
- 21:05weedy, they're going to eat his lunch a little bit, just because
- 21:08he's not that guy that can run with those type of athletic
- 21:12tight ends. So that happened a couple times,
- 21:15but I mean, overall the defense defense played very well in the
- 21:19first half. Duke really wasn't able to
- 21:21sustain to drive. The only touchdown they had was
- 21:24For muffed punt that was picked up in the end zone.
- 21:27So you know, I'd say overall a great, great first half, I think
- 21:32some standout players in the first half that I'm going to
- 21:34shout out here a little bit Belmar.
- 21:37Yeah, he had himself a very good first half.
- 21:39He was coming off the edge strong.
- 21:41I think he had, he had at least one sack, I think he might have
- 21:43had to Justice. Reed was out there.
- 21:47Impacting everything pushing the pocket making Bryce throw before
- 21:52he was ready, which I think overall was are 100% our game
- 21:58plan coming into this thing and Curtis, we talked about it with,
- 22:02with blitzes last week. So we had delayed with his last
- 22:05week. What do we not have this week?
- 22:07We didn't have the delay blitzes, which kind of shock for
- 22:10a little bit and in essentially as the crime went on would not
- 22:16send the delayed blitzes do in the second half.
- 22:19They started slowly figuring out when we were coming and they
- 22:23were feeding great. Wait, now I me and you talked
- 22:27about it in the delay in the blitz scenarios.
- 22:32When we blitzed essentially, they never got any big games
- 22:35because it looks like behind the blitzers.
- 22:37We were running covered three, cover for where there were going
- 22:40to be guy behind. Yeah, which I'm really thinking
- 22:44probably that was in there by Tracy and Jack to say, hey,
- 22:50Eight to help those guys. Hey listen, you're going to be
- 22:5215 yards off. We Blitz.
- 22:56Head down. Look where the ball goes
- 22:57quicker. The ball.
- 22:58Make the tackle, but once again, run Talk about the blitzes.
- 23:07With on, let's get into the second half because there's one
- 23:11thing we mentioned it as we were chatting and ready to roll on
- 23:14here. I wrote this down.
- 23:17Mmm eloquently here in my book, short side runs, utilize our
- 23:23speed run as you looked at the second half, what do we start
- 23:29doing? We went away from those short
- 23:32side zones on offense, man. We started to run to the wide
- 23:39side, we started to get Herbert out on the edge.
- 23:41We started to get Blackshear out on the edge and let them take
- 23:44advantage of things in space and once we started doing that, the
- 23:50offense had a whole lot more Rhythm.
- 23:52Even when we weren't able to hit some of the pastor's down feel
- 23:56that we were attempting but you know the big reason why is that?
- 23:59Because we were able to get some effective yardage on first and
- 24:02second down. So even when we got into third
- 24:05down situations it was me. Isabel and sometimes, even when
- 24:08we got into third and long situations, you know, sometimes
- 24:12you go with that, you know, that's that simple play.
- 24:16Just to get a few yards and pun and all of a sudden, her bird
- 24:18gets an edge and gets up field and he gets a 20-yard gain on
- 24:22Third, and 16, and the drive stays alive and you get to keep
- 24:26rolling. They're so good things happen.
- 24:30When you're able to run the ball and run it to the to the area
- 24:33that lets you take advantage of the space.
- 24:36You have and space was a big thing in this game and
- 24:40especially in the second half because we started doing some
- 24:42things with how we were motioning, guys in and out of
- 24:45the backfield and across the, the line of the formation that
- 24:51really got some of those backers outside of the box, and some of
- 24:54the safeties outside of the box where we could really tear them
- 24:57up between the tackles a lot more.
- 24:59And we saw that wear them down as well.
- 25:02Inside Zone was a lot stronger in the second half, some of the
- 25:05traps and Is and things like that were a lot better in the
- 25:08second half. Quarterback counter this Play.
- 25:13I Loved man, I don't know if you saw it but we showed outside the
- 25:17Zone with black share, right? Yeah.
- 25:20Showed outside Zone with Blackshear and then ran
- 25:24Burmeister than the other direction with Christian Daris.
- 25:28All leading out in front and that was a thing of beauty, man,
- 25:31I really love that play. I hope he run that a lot more.
- 25:36I say something about that play. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:39Well this isn't a Christian dorsal.
- 25:41Oh yeah. Right.
- 25:42Absolutely for him to cross like that, man.
- 25:44It will. And I remembered the play you're
- 25:46talking about because when I saw you think Chris and you see big
- 25:4877 going, it's just like that might have made Chris a little
- 25:53money. Oh, but I'm sure he can get out
- 25:57there and make some plays. Yeah, it's a big-time thing
- 26:00there man. And I just loved as much as I
- 26:03should on. Would Brad did in the first
- 26:05half. He Got into a little bit of his
- 26:08own in the second half with his play calling, even there was
- 26:12only one drive that I will be really critical of him on is
- 26:15that, you know, we were moving the ball, good through the
- 26:18ground and he comes out play action pass pass.
- 26:27And then we're third and long. And I'm like, so we've had two
- 26:31straight drives where we just pound.
- 26:33Pound, pound pound Pound. And now you coming out.
- 26:37Play action, Pass and Pass right out the gate like, you know,
- 26:42read the room, read the room. We're dominating them in the
- 26:45trenches right now. Let's not take the foot off the
- 26:48pedal there. Let's keep keep going at them
- 26:51and you know, I think we did a great job in the second half.
- 26:55Other than that, one drive of, really moving the ball and being
- 26:59consistent in the, in the Run game.
- 27:02Yeah. Brah.
- 27:03I think one thing to you probably feel wanted to try to
- 27:06keep the ball. Passing it because the line had
- 27:08some great protection. Today we mentioned that in the
- 27:11in the code of the know your enemy show, we only allow two
- 27:15sacks today so clearly we were doing a lot of stuff right
- 27:20there. Not a lot of tackles for loss
- 27:22from them. In, as you talk about the whole
- 27:27screwed up, go in the past is because there was that point in
- 27:30the third quarter where it was what six or seven consecutive
- 27:33run plays and it was gashes. Yeah.
- 27:36And it was so to the point is I think maybe I felt like I've got
- 27:42a pass, they're eventually going to you know, they're going to,
- 27:46they're going to find out and but it's like when the other
- 27:48hand you did at one point running seven straight time.
- 27:51So why even consider passing? Well I have no problem with the
- 27:56with the play action pass but you don't stack those two plays
- 27:59back to back on first and second and put yourself in the Excel
- 28:03sheet says you do Brian. Michelle we trust in Excel We
- 28:10Trust something I've noticed and maybe you noticed it during the
- 28:14game maybe you didn't. I feel like Braxton Burmeister
- 28:19is turning into a Ron, Willis territory of who his favorite
- 28:22targets are. I feel like he looks like he
- 28:24targets Big Stone Gap. James Mitchell.
- 28:27And Tavian a lot more than tray lot.
- 28:29More than you guys, unless specifically called bring
- 28:33passes. Not looking for, the running
- 28:34backs is much similar to what Willis did with Hazleton.
- 28:39Completely opposite of what we saw from Hendon.
- 28:42Last year were hidden open, man will get the ball.
- 28:45Don't care who you are. I don't have a favorite Target
- 28:48and that worries me. If he's going to be the guy
- 28:51going forward. Yeah.
- 28:53I think they're still at a point with Burmeister in the passing
- 28:56game, where he is. If the first read isn't there,
- 29:02it's like first rechecked down, run, there's not a whole lot of
- 29:06moving away from that. And I think, I'll say this in
- 29:09his favorite. We did a lot of a lot of the
- 29:13plays called tonight, we're like two main routes.
- 29:17So there wasn't a lot of options there.
- 29:20If the primary guy wasn't open, or if you feel like you had to
- 29:24move away from the primary guy, so I'll give him a little bit of
- 29:28of credit and they're there wasn't a whole lot of
- 29:30progression or reading the whole field or anything like that
- 29:33because there was only two routes.
- 29:34And a lot of times they did a decent job of taking away, both
- 29:37of them and there were at least the the one that he wanted to
- 29:40throw. So I think some of that is his
- 29:45his maturity at this point. I don't I'm not sure if he's
- 29:48ready to handle some of those more exotic routes that we have
- 29:53in our Playbook. Yeah.
- 29:56But that, that will talk about that probably a little bit more
- 30:00as we get kind of to the end of the game and what we kind of
- 30:03expect going forward. But you know, in general, the
- 30:06play calling never got Braxton in a rhythm in the passing game
- 30:11like he never I don't think at any point, he felt For that.
- 30:16But I think in the second half, he at least was In the second
- 30:21half he felt like he was at least kind of a 50/50 when he
- 30:24put the ball up there and and I think that was enough in this
- 30:29game thankfully now I will say while we're on the Braxton
- 30:34Burmeister piece here, you know we had some really good drives
- 30:39in the second half but we had one where we could potentially
- 30:42put some really good cushion late in the game.
- 30:47It would have been the hammer. Yeah.
- 30:50We and he pull the ball late was like black, she was going to
- 30:54take the outside Zone there and Braxton really late in the in
- 30:59the mesh point there decided he was going to he was going to
- 31:01keep it and go to the right and the ball just kind of Squirt it
- 31:05out and all of a sudden Dima kg jumps on it for Duke.
- 31:10And you know you kind of get that that bad feeling in your in
- 31:16your chest. When that happens because it was
- 31:17late in the game we were up three we were knocking on the
- 31:20Door, and all of a sudden they got the ball again.
- 31:23Yeah. And that was in a, in a span
- 31:25where Duke had really started to move the ball against are tired.
- 31:28Secondary. So you, you started to get a
- 31:32little little antsy at that point, so it wasn't great,
- 31:37right? Then it wasn't great.
- 31:38It, I mean, I made a note here with that was a bad snap.
- 31:42It was high and in that case I think Bryce no regard it as soon
- 31:47as that thing was high, it should have just get it in two
- 31:50black fish. Your gut, you either put it in
- 31:51his gut, or if you can't get in his gut, you don't even carry
- 31:54out the fake. You just go ahead and make you
- 31:56like straight up. Yeah.
- 31:57You just run the use from the second part of the read option.
- 32:00He didn't late pull, you already said and I mean, at that point
- 32:06in time and it would be the last one, we lose the turnover
- 32:10battle, three, two, one. And we'd already where we were
- 32:14that was going to be three points.
- 32:16Regardless, the way we were running the ball.
- 32:19We cook seven more points off. Lord, and if anything from this
- 32:22game, I think guys will not be happy with turnovers if I know
- 32:29Pope don't like them. So I have a feeling you guys
- 32:32might be running some gassers on Monday for those three turnovers
- 32:36because Braxton interception was absolutely brutal in the first
- 32:40half and then that play. So in and another thing is going
- 32:46to go back a couple, okay? You know, do this?
- 32:51So fucking pissed. We're at the 3 yard line first
- 32:55and gold from one dozen Quincy Patterson come in.
- 33:00After the first play, we get stonewalled, we don't put him
- 33:04in, yes, a couple Park letter Braxton scores on an outside.
- 33:08I'm going to run great. I'm getting warm or anger at
- 33:11this when you have a weapon of hips type used him, you also
- 33:17great. Okay.
- 33:18I want to run the ball, put them in there, let them load the Box,
- 33:21you know, he can throw a very nice short fade route.
- 33:24Yeah. Getting irritating to the point
- 33:27of again you called. You said he called a better
- 33:31second half. It's like it's the consistency
- 33:33that It's consistency. Yeah, I agree and like I said,
- 33:39he did call a better second half but he had probably an area here
- 33:43area there. You were, you just shaking your
- 33:44head like why are you? Why?
- 33:47Why like, you know, sometimes it's a Personnel.
- 33:50Like, you know, you've got a series of plays where you got
- 33:54Blackshear and on the field, but you keep running short side
- 33:58outside Zone. Like what are you doing?
- 34:01What are you doing? Well but it's like there's no
- 34:04flexibility. As adjustment now to get into
- 34:08the halftime room, which when you, that's when you probably
- 34:10think the 20 probably has more of a hand and what we want to do
- 34:16some milk. I notice I know.
- 34:18I'm kind of just interjecting pieces here and there.
- 34:20Brian, we have another guy now that is proven, I know it's only
- 34:24one time one time but another guy from slot showing Caleb
- 34:30Smith running that Jet Sweep, the cat about a 12-yard gain And
- 34:36once again, that help you talk about the motions and stuff.
- 34:39Well, now that cable Smith's in the slot.
- 34:42Okay. Well, what if he runs a Jet
- 34:44Sweep teams immediately have to start thinking about it, right?
- 34:47Yeah. And we only want ran what?
- 34:49Maybe three of those in this entire game if you count the
- 34:52double reverse. Yeah.
- 34:54Okay. Yeah.
- 34:56Do we didn't not run any jet sweeps?
- 34:58Yeah. So that W.
- 34:59This is a game and I think some of that is their defensive ends
- 35:02getting out. Feel, they might have seen.
- 35:04Hey, we're not. Have a ton of opportunities with
- 35:06the way these guys get up field and maybe too much penetration,
- 35:11don't take, you know, those 45-yard losses.
- 35:13That people just bitch about when they talk about the Jet
- 35:16Sweep. So that's probably something to
- 35:18do with the man. But, you know, as bad as some
- 35:23part of the parts of this game, were the way we close this thing
- 35:27out on that last Drive was a thing of beauty, man.
- 35:33We had Khalil Herbert Side Zone gets the second level gets,
- 35:39takes it outside gets up the sideline, outruns everybody
- 35:42touchdown. And I mean, that was one of
- 35:46those things that we haven't seen from this offense known
- 35:50time plays like that. Like, that's been what's been
- 35:53missing 100%. Was a guy that once he gets to
- 35:57the second level as that home run potential, and you know,
- 36:02having that back in our repertoire, is going to make
- 36:05Make the his offense really dangerous.
- 36:08If we ever get The Passing game going with any, any sort of
- 36:12Competency are for Braun, we ended up getting almost 50% on
- 36:19third down conversion, it started off bad and then 26
- 36:22total. First downs again.
- 36:24We actually beat the beauty average.
- 36:27But Brian, let's turn it back over to the defense in the
- 36:29second half. Sure, let's get there because I
- 36:35think we mentioned them in the first half.
- 36:37As you mentioned Bellmore, this defensive line in general is
- 36:40different and it's no doubt built till Nick Darryl Tapp are
- 36:44the difference makers and we've created some, we've got a
- 36:48monster line, not only our first team line, but our second beam
- 36:54line. And some guys coming in at a
- 36:56point where 13 line make an impact. 2019 38, total sex that
- 37:05Looking at right under three again we have 13 into game so
- 37:11far that's good and Chris Coleman found the stat and I
- 37:19think it kind of shocked you when I told you earlier.
- 37:21So 2019, defensive end, seven and a half sacks 2020 into
- 37:29games. They're already at 8 and have
- 37:31sex it seems like every play against you Even some of their
- 37:35Quick Pass Place. It just seemed like we were in
- 37:38their backfield the whole time and somebody you were really
- 37:43excited with we made this move and you're going to hit him on a
- 37:47lot of other pieces. We had a more a bar, no twice.
- 37:51Today, two sacks who sex, buddy? And the one I really loved was
- 37:57was late in the game. Good inside move inside, rip and
- 38:01just got 82, tackles lunch, Got at the quarterback.
- 38:06I mean and he later had one where he came off the edge did
- 38:09the same thing, so he's showing that he's got some pass rush
- 38:12moves, you know, I think going forward he's going to be used a
- 38:17lot in scenarios where he's not in that having to you know make
- 38:22a lot of reads. I think that's where he's still
- 38:24growing right now where he has to read, run read past, you
- 38:27know, figure out where he needs to be on a given play, but when
- 38:29he's given the job, go after the quarterback.
- 38:33Yeah, he's one of the best we have right now.
- 38:35So I've got, I've got no problem with seeing him on the field
- 38:38War. Hopefully, he works on some of
- 38:40those those areas where he can figure out the scheme wise and
- 38:44read wise what he needs to do. But you know, when he's got one
- 38:48job, he takes care of business man and and then the second half
- 38:53in general. I mean, I think we did a still
- 38:55kept a really good job of getting pressure on Embrace.
- 39:00We did the one thing I'm seeing and I think the reason that we
- 39:03didn't do as many Any delay blitzes.
- 39:07I think you know we talked about it in terms of what Bryce does
- 39:11with the ball when he sees pressure like that, that
- 39:16sometimes is enough when he feels it coming, he's getting
- 39:22rid of the ball. It's not always accurate.
- 39:24It's not always where he wants it to be.
- 39:26And we saw that consistently man.
- 39:28We had areas. I think he probably missed a
- 39:32wide open man, about four or five times.
- 39:34Yeah. If you did, just because he felt
- 39:36the pressure, he had a couple guys that had some drops.
- 39:40Especially, I think, Deon Jackson on 11, critical third
- 39:44down through a slant to him. He could be, it's flexed out and
- 39:48they threw a slam to him. He had to drop.
- 39:50So I think those are the things that maybe were adjustments that
- 39:55we kind of planned. Say, hey, let Bryce know that
- 39:58it's coming, so it's already in his head before the snap that
- 40:02he's going to have to get rid of the ball quick.
- 40:05Right. That actually makes sense
- 40:07because you did mention that, that sometimes when he gets
- 40:10under pressure, he would just sling it on.
- 40:14And he shouldn't for maybe that did make sense.
- 40:16Why we didn't do the delayed blitzes this week.
- 40:19I'm also thinking to I'll go back to my other point, I think
- 40:22having the back half so depleted, like we just get we
- 40:26had, we just have to attack, we can't get cute with it, we just,
- 40:29yeah, have to force it. So those guys can see where the
- 40:33balls going to vacant attack. A can use their Natural
- 40:36Instincts and everything. I did notice some Bron and any
- 40:42got more pronounced as the game went along.
- 40:45I think it's just fatigue but we were not as crisp as tackling as
- 40:49we were last week. Yeah.
- 40:52And I think a fatigue of ain't be first time kids out there
- 40:58because we missed some run Lane been we missed, at least I
- 41:02counted on my hand, for five tackles for loss.
- 41:05If not and then probably several one 22-yard gains some went for
- 41:10big games and that's why it was such a competitive.
- 41:13Second half is they popped a couple big plays on us and
- 41:17definitely some things we can clean up for the young guys,
- 41:22though. I think that's good because now
- 41:24they've got them on take to say Hey listen you guys were at the
- 41:27D1 level now and what's a lie right?
- 41:30You've got to make a sound packable my we I think we made
- 41:33some adjustments to that. I think these It's all probably
- 41:36when they were making some halftime adjustments.
- 41:39You know, they've got some taller wideouts, especially
- 41:42Bobo. And I think I can remove the
- 41:43other guy's name, but, you know, they're, they're taller
- 41:46wideouts. And I think they saw, hey, we
- 41:49can maybe take advantage of things outside against some of
- 41:54these inexperience corners and they started to do that a little
- 41:56bit and fatigue started to set in as you said and some of the
- 41:59fatigue was just a couple times the defense of why not get there
- 42:04and Bryce. Being able to throw on time, you
- 42:08know, forms of Gone with the receiver today.
- 42:11And he's a 6-3 guys. So correct.
- 42:13There were two big guys on the outside.
- 42:15Okay. Yeah.
- 42:16And then, you know, we started to see them mix in Mateo,
- 42:20Durant, and some running plays and he had, he had a good good
- 42:24couple gashes where he was breaking a couple tackles as you
- 42:26were talking about there. So definitely saw fatigue set in
- 42:29there a little bit and that's to be expected as thin as we were,
- 42:32especially, you know, at the linebacker and And secondary
- 42:36level in particular. So I think that's just one of
- 42:40those things we're going to have to work through.
- 42:42I think we also say the dean Ferguson was not available for
- 42:45this game. We didn't Dean not available
- 42:49again. Hard with the depth are the at
- 42:54the linebacker. Somebody probably could play
- 42:56nickel. Probably in a pinch.
- 42:57Could play strong safely world. So yeah.
- 43:02Burn as we thought putting a wrap on this.
- 43:05This. And I can't remember who put it
- 43:08out. There is somebody that follows
- 43:11both of us Falls to show because it popped up in my Twitter feed.
- 43:15If I told you in the first two games, we're going to have 44
- 43:18players out. Those players would include
- 43:22Hendon hooker, Alan Tisdale Divine Diablo Jermaine Waller.
- 43:29I'm betting somebody from last week, I know, because there is
- 43:32some of the, some of the young, some of the wide receivers were
- 43:35expecting to bet. Would you say we're two in a
- 43:37even playing in Sea State, playing Duke.
- 43:41No yeah I mean II think we baby split that but you know all
- 43:48things considered I feel really good about where we are.
- 43:53You know we had moments of it was kind of a tale of two halves
- 43:58in a lot of ways. I mean, we played really tight
- 44:01on offense in the first half and played a little fatigued, and on
- 44:05defense in the second half overall, the game numbers
- 44:09weren't bad. But I think you just the flow of
- 44:15the game, wasn't what we expected.
- 44:17And you know, a couple of mistakes that we made kind of
- 44:21gave Duke some some easy scores or kept the score Closer by us,
- 44:26not being able to punch it in. So that's really the big
- 44:31takeaway for me is that if we can clean up some things and not
- 44:35you know, hurt ourselves. I think that that's going to be
- 44:39good for us going forward. We talked about the The muffed
- 44:42punt that resulted in a touchdown for them.
- 44:44That was their only score in the entire first half.
- 44:46So if we can clean up those things, I think we're going to
- 44:49be good going forward, especially if we get fully
- 44:51healthy. And we're actually able to put
- 44:53our email, at least, everybody being in the 2D, on the
- 44:57starting, the starting lineup, I think that'd be, that'd be a
- 45:00nice start there. Well.
- 45:03But I think what, these first two games have done, is it has
- 45:08told these young guys who had to step in at kind.
- 45:11Of a moment's notice in a pinch, you guys can play in.
- 45:17And a lot of times I you see young guys who don't get that
- 45:21opportunity. They go out and they're talented
- 45:23guys, but it's almost like nerves like I cannot do this.
- 45:28You now have shown a bunch of young guys, you can do this, you
- 45:33can do this at a certain level. You can do this at a level where
- 45:35your team can win football games.
- 45:38Don't forget that because there may be a time.
- 45:41Later. This year, we need you in a
- 45:42pinch and the more you compete, the more you're getting on that
- 45:46field. So Brian and rege, wrap it up,
- 45:50is there anything else we need to put a bow on tonight?
- 45:53Yeah, I think the one thing I want to talk about just before
- 45:55we wrap it up is the quarterback room and what we think what we
- 46:01think that's going to look like going into UNC which is above
- 46:07the matchups, we have had so far that's going to be the most
- 46:10complete team. We played, are you sure I think
- 46:15so. I think I think top-to-bottom
- 46:18offense defense, special teams unit is going to be the best
- 46:20team that we played. At this point, they did struggle
- 46:25mightily but I think I think some of that was I can write off
- 46:28to rust. I wish we would have gotten that
- 46:32run, we didn't. But with the way Braixen,
- 46:37Burmeister struggled in the passing game today and What?
- 46:42We've kind of seen from two weeks of I'm not not.
- 46:45He hasn't played bad but he's not as efficient with the balls.
- 46:49I would like to see or Bondo. Who do you think is going to be
- 46:53the starting quarterback for you and see for you?
- 46:55And for the Hokies for you and T, it should begin to milker.
- 46:59And and there's a my biggest reasons are is this With all
- 47:06these new weapons with Herbert, with black shoe with Fair, she
- 47:11was in the game tonight with working in Hajj.
- 47:14With this offensive line, revamped clearly protecting the
- 47:18passer better, creating some big run Lanes.
- 47:23UNC has no tape. Whatsoever of what potentially
- 47:30we could do within didn't set it earlier.
- 47:34No knock on Braxton but hinden doesn't have one favor to
- 47:40favorite receivers hinden reads, the play reads the field, get to
- 47:45to the person in the best position to make a play and
- 47:48against you. And see, they gave up a lot of
- 47:51passing yards today against BC, BC could not run the ball.
- 47:55We've discussed that they're struggling 884.
- 47:57Four yards today. I think we're alike them alone.
- 48:01Yeah and I don't know if you feel that way, do I think back
- 48:05seams going to get it on some plays?
- 48:06Yeah. Five antenna needs to be the
- 48:09one. I mean I think all three of our
- 48:11quarterback should have packages designed just for their skills
- 48:16and they may be used to more or lesser degree on a given week,
- 48:22you know, I think if you have a couple Series where you throw
- 48:27Out there against you and see just to mix it up, make them
- 48:32have to really honor the quarterback run but still be
- 48:35able to pass the ball if you need to with some rpos and
- 48:38things like that, I like doing that.
- 48:41But what I don't want to see is I don't want to see Braxton
- 48:44Burmeister out. There is the starting
- 48:46quarterback for the whole game. I won't hand in hooker out
- 48:48there. I think, just his command of the
- 48:52offense and his ability to, as you said, read this read, The
- 48:57field make the right play and I just his temperament is exactly
- 49:03what you want at quarterback. And I think sometimes Braxton
- 49:06Let's uh - play impact a play later, in the passing game, in
- 49:13particular, so that's not the case with him a hooker Hendon.
- 49:17Hooker is a guy that plays every play on its own, lets it come to
- 49:21him commands, the Huddle. Well and has shown that when the
- 49:26lights are on And he can make plays and whatever we lose in
- 49:32the running game at the quarterback position by having
- 49:36hidden hookers. A starter.
- 49:37I'm okay with especially with what we have with Khalil Herbert
- 49:42and Rahim Blackshear running the rock.
- 49:44Well, it would be increase versus the decrease.
- 49:47Do you completely lose your quarterback running game with
- 49:50him? Didn't know you not, but the
- 49:53exponential game. Yeah, happening.
- 49:57It goes through the roof and, and when that starts happening,
- 50:02you saw the lengths that they would stack boxes.
- 50:05You imagine the first six, seven, eight, passes, and hinted
- 50:08848. Just lighten them up all over
- 50:10the place and that defense have to say k, linebackers need to be
- 50:14a little bit further off. Safeties need to be 15 yards off
- 50:17the line, the amount of bass For her belly like here.
- 50:22Yep, it's huge man. We're talking back-to-back 300
- 50:27yard rushing games, there could be a 400 burger and, you know,
- 50:34so yeah. No, yeah, we're not knocking
- 50:37Braixen Burmeister, but we're definitely team hooker here when
- 50:40you're Queen hooker here, team hooker, but I will, share their
- 50:45man will be in trouble for like a month.
- 50:48All right, Brian. If there is nothing else and two
