- 2:23It is fucking brilliant. Shouts out Nick and Brody on
- 2:27their campaigns. They I've listened into Brody's.
- 2:30I've not in it yet but it was super awesome for his first
- 2:35time. D Ming, Congrats Brody.
- 2:36It's amazing and Nick always kills it.
- 2:39So hop in. You want to play D&D?
- 2:41Let's get a campaign started. I'm sure you'll find a group of
- 2:43people. Oh yeah.
- 2:45That's for sure. That's that.
- 2:46That is that. That was smooth minus my
- 2:48stumbling and my fumbling, cuz I have a problem sometimes, you
- 2:52know? That was smooth minus the
- 2:53mistakes. Very good.
- 2:56Also happy belated birthday, Brody.
- 2:59Happy belated birthday, Brody. Evan, Matt and myself went down
- 3:03to Indiana this past weekend and we had a good time.
- 3:07Yeah, I had a blast. You hit Matt with a golf ball.
- 3:12Why did you have to bring that up?
- 3:13Is the first thing that happened.
- 3:14It's not like it was the. It was the first thing that
- 3:16happened. It was the first major event of
- 3:18the day. I didn't because that was the.
- 3:20Funniest shit, because you defied well.
- 3:23The last time I golfed, I was like 12.
- 3:26Yeah, and you, I mean, you got, you got closed a couple times
- 3:28hitting some people with golf balls.
- 3:30I mean, yeah, it freaked me the fuck out.
- 3:33Yeah, I mean, you did get it in the water twice.
- 3:36Fuck that water, man. It skipped.
- 3:38I was like, oh, to go, you know, just sunk.
- 3:39I was like, man. You know what, though?
- 3:41It was fun golf. I had a I had a blast.
- 3:44I have been practicing my swing in the backyard every day since
- 3:48we went. I was sore as shit after I woke
- 3:52up and I'm like. Wow.
- 3:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:53Because you're not really using those muscles a lot like that.
- 3:56Gramp areas like the be the same way.
- 3:59I guess so, yeah. You know, I like that feeling
- 4:02though, Like, that's job well done, you know?
- 4:04Yeah, but great. Great party, great party, great
- 4:08time. The two hours there and back.
- 4:10Great boat ride, yes? Great food.
- 4:12Food was good, although a little too much. 1000 Island on that
- 4:16burger, brother. I picked it up and I could feel
- 4:19it sliding out between the buns. Did you get tots or fries?
- 4:26I got tots. Tots were on point.
- 4:28Yeah, they were paying, although I can now.
- 4:30But how good they were. I kind of want to know how the
- 4:32fries are. You know what?
- 4:33I mean like, I know. So sounds like we got to make a
- 4:36trip back down there. Oh man, it's going to take, it's
- 4:39going to take a lot of effort for me to get my fat ass back in
- 4:42the car for two hours like that. You you drive all day.
- 4:46That's why. What makes you think I want to
- 4:48drive more? Fair.
- 4:51I'll do it. Hey, there you go.
- 4:53OK, I'll drive with you next. Time I won't leave you like I
- 4:55did this time. Not my fault.
- 4:58Yeah, Matt will never listen to this.
- 4:59Matt. Love you buddy.
- 5:01Mountain news morning is not good for you.
- 5:03It's not conducive. Reason you're not here anymore,
- 5:05It's because you drink Mountain Dew in the morning.
- 5:07But. You drink.
- 5:08You drink a liter of Mountain Dew in the morning.
- 5:10You freak me out when you do that.
- 5:12Actually almost threw up just from me saying that.
- 5:14Freaks me the fuck out, man. It really does.
- 5:17It's bad. I was gonna ask what you've been
- 5:20playing lately. That's what I was gonna ask you.
- 5:22We. Haven't done that.
- 5:22Guess I'm just gonna guess what I've been playing lately other
- 5:25than Overwatch, because we play that together.
- 5:27F1 No Golf A. Little bit, but only because
- 5:32you've. Been playing counterstrike.
- 5:34A decent bit. I've been playing well that Red
- 5:38Dead 2 again. GTRPI think right.
- 5:42I played a little bit of that honestly.
- 5:44So that's that's honestly pretty fun and this is going to sound
- 5:48contradictory. I don't like that basic things
- 5:51to do in game. I have to talk to real people
- 5:53for like like you can repair your car at like a pan spray
- 5:58like how you couldn't like you know the normal game but it
- 6:02like. Yells at you.
- 6:04When you get to one of them and it's like there's a mechanic
- 6:06live right now, go to them and it's like I I don't want to have
- 6:10to have a fake conversation. I just want the car repaired.
- 6:14Like it's the same thing where it's like he's going to role
- 6:17play fixing my car and then he's going to be like, yeah, you
- 6:21should also get some upgrades. He's going to up try and upsell
- 6:23me. It's like I'm not falling for a
- 6:25dude. I got 24K like I'm not spending
- 6:28however much money just to. You're not doing any work.
- 6:32Just clicking a couple of buttons that give me what I
- 6:34need. Like I guess I should try that
- 6:37and see if I say I want to upgrade.
- 6:39And sorry if you hear background noise, that's my dad.
- 6:41He's playing War Zone. Big Nils Gaming, but.
- 6:47Like, you're not doing anything. You know what I mean?
- 6:49So, like, I'm not. I don't want to have a
- 6:51conversation with you about it. It it was fun in certain
- 6:53respects. I did go to a pot shop and it
- 6:55immediately as I got towards the entrance, a guy pulled his gun
- 6:59out in front of seven other people, like surrounding him
- 7:02almost. And he was like, what are you
- 7:04just coming with me? Like trying to kidnap me for
- 7:06ransom money, which is like, I just got here.
- 7:09I have nothing to offer you. I just put a down payment on a
- 7:12car, like I have nothing. And my dumb ass responded by
- 7:19throwing my hands up. The six other people beside me
- 7:23all drew guns. I looked like I looked like Alan
- 7:28from the Barbie movie. Oh my God, what you just saw?
- 7:32Which I just saw. And that is a review that's
- 7:35going to happen because I'm gonna go see Barbie and what are
- 7:38you seeing tomorrow, buddy? Oppenheimer, I'm so excited if
- 7:42anybody has been listening to the show from last year to now.
- 7:45You know my excitement for Oppenheimer.
- 7:47I am brimming with excitement. I'm sweating with excitement.
- 7:53I just can't wait. I'm going with my dad, my
- 7:54brother, to the Michigan Science Center to see.
- 7:57It. IMAX Dome Theater.
- 7:59Honestly, I've never seen a movie in IMAX 70 millimeter
- 8:02before, so I will definitely come back with a review of how
- 8:05it looks. However, I think that most of my
- 8:09friends won't believe me because I say everything's good when I
- 8:12go to movies. Yeah, we we also do watch
- 8:15different movies than a lot of other people.
- 8:17Like, I'm also a huge horror buff, so like, but I can get
- 8:20into things like The Green Knight and like just like really
- 8:23dive deep into shit. And that's what I'm excited for
- 8:25with Oppenheimer, you know? Yeah.
- 8:27Yeah, no, I've. Deep dive.
- 8:30So excited for that. But yeah, no, I've been playing
- 8:32some GTARP, some Red Dead two. I've been playing a little bit
- 8:35of golf, Overwatch with you and some of the other guys and
- 8:39trying to get people to come back and play.
- 8:43Six days in Fallujah, It has not worked out, audience.
- 8:47We'll get back into it. That's a review that has to
- 8:50happen as well. Nobody wants to to play it with
- 8:53me anymore and they just updated it today too.
- 8:55So if anybody, if anybody here is interested in 60s in
- 8:58Fallujah, join the disc work because I have nobody else to
- 9:00play it with. There you go there.
- 9:04You go does I get people to join?
- 9:07Absolutely. I've been playing.
- 9:10I just started my friendly neighborhood.
- 9:12Well yes you did. You were streaming that on the
- 9:14spot Twitch. You should go check that out and
- 9:16give us a follow. You should.
- 9:18I enjoy it a lot. It's a really cool premise.
- 9:22Check the game out. I believe it was made by two
- 9:25people. Very nice.
- 9:27It's fucking incredible. I've been playing Overwatch too
- 9:31with you guys and I'm going to be getting into the Diablo for
- 9:36season today. Very excited to start my new
- 9:39campaign. Yeah, I heard some bad news
- 9:41about that today. Yeah, I did too.
- 9:43We're not going to talk about it right now, though.
- 9:44It's fine. It's fine.
- 9:45It's fine. He's hiding.
- 9:47From the negativity he is. The real reason you guys are all
- 9:50here is for the main topic of today's episode, which is our
- 9:55review of FPS doc First Person Shooter.
- 10:01Dude, I was waiting a very long time to see the movie.
- 10:07And then Richard and David reached out to us was like, hey,
- 10:11do you guys want to sign up for this and get into the early
- 10:15screenings? I was like, yeah, absolutely.
- 10:17So we got into the prescreening, which is the quote UN quote
- 10:21rough cut. And then we got into the pretty
- 10:23much finished screening, which there's a few things they had to
- 10:25put into the movie or they were still just editing really quick.
- 10:29It was they're both versions are basically the, the finalized
- 10:32movie. So we've seen this movie
- 10:34multiple Times Now. Yeah.
- 10:37It is incredible. The movie is directed by David
- 10:42Craddock and codirected by Chris Stratton and then written and
- 10:47produced by Richard Moss. And it's a part of creator VC,
- 10:52which is Robin Block, who is the director of In Search Darkness.
- 10:57Like the definitive 80s horror movie documentary series.
- 11:02Great stuff, Great fucking stuff.
- 11:04So with like. All of that in mind.
- 11:07When I saw this project be announced on Twitter and I saw
- 11:14the, what's it called, The fucking Kickstarter, that's when
- 11:17we got in, WASD did. I was like, holy shit, that's a
- 11:22really good cast of people that you want to create a movie this
- 11:27deep, right? And it delivers, man, I mean.
- 11:31We'll start with the guests, right?
- 11:33Like, let's just get the guests out of the way.
- 11:34I mean, you got fucking John Carmack, John Romero, Adrian
- 11:38Carmack, Tom Hall, Sandy Peterson, American McGee, Cliff
- 11:42Blazinski. It it just Warren Specter.
- 11:46The list goes on and on and on of legendary people in the early
- 11:50days and current days of FPS. And it is amazing to hear their
- 11:55stories. It is so incredible to see how
- 11:59these games came to be. Why they came to be and all the
- 12:03iterations of them that were around and what they almost
- 12:07were, it was it was fucking incredible.
- 12:11This is a movie that it was. It felt like it was made for me.
- 12:16I I'm watching it. I felt it was made for you.
- 12:19I was like, this is. I was like, Oh my God, this is
- 12:21stuff Nick likes. This is stuff Nick likes, This
- 12:23is stuff that Nick is going to explode over.
- 12:26Yes, very violently. So and.
- 12:30I gotta say, coming from the complete opposite side of the
- 12:33fence of never played them, never was told to play them,
- 12:37really. Like I was never forced.
- 12:39I was too young, you know, like I I just wasn't around for it.
- 12:43So it was really cool to see. The story behind some of these
- 12:48games and how they came to be and what I play now was
- 12:51influenced by them way back in the day.
- 12:53At this point now I feel like with certain games they become
- 12:56so popular. Like the things that they
- 12:58pioneered have become so popular that you don't notice it now.
- 13:01Like you don't see it and immediately think of maybe them
- 13:03right away if you didn't play them.
- 13:05So like in a way that's what's cool is to go and say like,
- 13:08well, this thing reminded me of this game I played in reality.
- 13:12That game got it from these games.
- 13:14If that sounds really convoluted, but like.
- 13:17That's interesting to learn about.
- 13:18I mean it's it's history. I mean, people just don't assume
- 13:21or they don't think of history the same way.
- 13:23Maybe for video games, because it's not as historical in a
- 13:26sense, right? I mean, we've had movies for
- 13:28over 100 years now, technically. So this is kind of an
- 13:32interesting thing where it's like, yeah, we've had video
- 13:34games since like what, the early 60s or 70s or something like
- 13:37that. But like, you still think now
- 13:39it's still, it's still too new because they're only getting
- 13:43better every year by like in crazy amounts sometimes.
- 13:46But no. So, like, it was awesome to see
- 13:49the original people who created Doom and Quake.
- 13:52And I was thinking of another one I just.
- 13:55Wolfenstein Marathon. Halo.
- 13:59Like, I mean fucking. Even Jurassic Park trespasser.
- 14:04Halflife. Like all of these things that
- 14:08really feed. And it's cool to see Duke
- 14:11Newcomb. Can't forget him Fucking, I
- 14:15mean. Scott Miller.
- 14:19That's a person. Yeah, dude.
- 14:22Like, how can I not have him in the fucking list?
- 14:24He if you if you didn't know we interviewed Scott Miller, please
- 14:27check out that interview. He is incredible.
- 14:29And he's also incredible in this movie.
- 14:33System shock. Jesus fucking Christ, dude.
- 14:35Like all everything that I fucking grew up with is here and
- 14:39it's just fucking amazing. But it's cool to the story.
- 14:43It weaves, man, like. One game goes off, another off
- 14:48another, and therefore this was created.
- 14:50And because of this technology they were able to do this.
- 14:53But then another company found this technology on top of that
- 14:56technology and created this and it's like, what the fuck man, It
- 15:00was like the Wild West back of the days of development.
- 15:03It's just interesting. Everything was also just done
- 15:07right like it either like. It either worked or it didn't
- 15:10back then too, right. So it's also crazy to see how
- 15:13different it was to what we get now, which is now we're getting
- 15:16like unreleased games for full price while we help test it.
- 15:22And and it's cool to see. Like, yeah, it's like 6.
- 15:24It's like between 5:00 to 20, maybe 30 people that create
- 15:29something like Doom or Quake. And you just, you got it And
- 15:33that was it. There was no hash coming later.
- 15:37It was like if something didn't work, it was either intended or
- 15:40it wasn't seen. Like that's how it was.
- 15:43And you know, I mean, so that alone is is kind of cool.
- 15:47I only kind of grew up with those types of games really
- 15:50early in life, but too young to understand what that was.
- 15:53So like you get to see how that worked where you had no DLC, you
- 15:59had no season pass, you had no battle pass, right?
- 16:01You just, you got Doom and you played Doom and you finished
- 16:04Doom and then you were done. Then you came.
- 16:06Back, Yeah. Then you waited for maybe
- 16:08another game. You didn't know if you were
- 16:10getting, like, like movies. You just had no idea if there
- 16:12was going to be another Star Wars.
- 16:14You just knew there was one dude.
- 16:16But yeah, that's incredible to me, like.
- 16:19Fucking incredible. Let's go back to it, please.
- 16:21I would prefer because now we have really cool tech.
- 16:24So I'd love to get a game that just works on release, just
- 16:27because it'd be like whoa, like this is.
- 16:30It's so cool. But yeah, no, I I loved it.
- 16:32I I agree with Nick. The story that it weaves is
- 16:34really cool. I like how it builds upon each
- 16:37game as you go. So you kind of get a fuller
- 16:39picture as time goes on instead of just these like like almost
- 16:42like a puzzle. It's like this is almost like a
- 16:44path being laid down in front of you.
- 16:46Here's the next one. Here's the next one.
- 16:48Okay. But this leads to this path.
- 16:49And you know, there are some detours along the way for good
- 16:52reason. They did talk about the Unreal
- 16:55Engine a bit, which I liked, you know, just how that came to be
- 16:58as well. And.
- 16:59And everything. So yeah, no, I I was thoroughly
- 17:03enjoying the interviews, the story of it.
- 17:06I mean, it's so it's just cool. I don't know.
- 17:08I'm a nerd, though. I I like, you know, for a reason
- 17:12like. Well, the cool thing to me is
- 17:16not only that everything Jang good on each other, right?
- 17:20And like, it felt like everything was falling into
- 17:21peace in the place, just perfectly.
- 17:24It's how it did it. Everything had a rhyme or reason
- 17:29to it. Right.
- 17:30Like it wasn't like, here's Doom, here's now Call of Duty.
- 17:36It was here's this and then this and then this and then this.
- 17:41Like it. It, like you said, the path it
- 17:44takes was very deliberate and very, very like strategic,
- 17:49almost right. Like it was like, okay, what?
- 17:52I mean, we'll get into the runtime.
- 17:54We'll get into like all of that here in a minute, but.
- 17:57It all felt deliberate and I loved that so fucking much.
- 18:01Because it could have been a mess.
- 18:03Like a documentary with this scale could have been a mess
- 18:07where it's like, OK, fuck, like there's so much to talk about
- 18:10here and there are games they leave out.
- 18:11But that, I mean for time. And they couldn't get to it all.
- 18:14Clarity's sake, yeah. Yeah.
- 18:16No. And that's the thing too, right?
- 18:18Our interview with them, we've heard how much they wanted to go
- 18:20back and explore everything. It's just you.
- 18:22To make it enjoyable and interesting for an audience, you
- 18:25can't just include everything because that's only going to fit
- 18:28for such a small group of people that really care about it,
- 18:30right. Like, it'll fit you.
- 18:32You'll watch it, right? But like somebody who maybe
- 18:34doesn't know as much myself, I don't know if I would.
- 18:37Right. But because you kept me engaged
- 18:40throughout the entire thing, that's why I like it, right?
- 18:43I'm I'm. I'm not being just kind of
- 18:46brought here. Back up top, left, right.
- 18:49Yeah, I know I'm being brought. On a specific path to get to the
- 18:55end, you're trying to make a point, right?
- 18:57So like Nick said, they don't go from, hey, here's Doom with what
- 19:02it had as technology. Let's jump to Battlefield 3 from
- 19:062011, and then we're going to go back to Wolfenstein 3D and then
- 19:10we're going to go, you know, to Halo Infinite.
- 19:13It's like you just, you know that's not going to, you're
- 19:16going to get jumbled up because you'll be like, wow, how does
- 19:18Doom relate to Battlefield? Right.
- 19:20If they were to do that, but the?
- 19:22Cool, they did. Fucking yeah, exactly.
- 19:24They fucking didn't. And they fucking.
- 19:26They dug their feet in and they just went for it.
- 19:29And I think a movie, I've said this before because we're going
- 19:33to get, like, we're going to get all the love for it and like our
- 19:37opinions out of of the movie, out of the way right now like
- 19:41that. I feel like that's proper.
- 19:42Get this out of the way. Then we'll talk about the the
- 19:45nittygritty and give it our give it our rating.
- 19:49I feel like a movie like this is important, especially nowadays
- 19:52more than ever, right? Like nowadays a lot of people,
- 19:56like we see all these games come out and like you said, they're
- 19:59all unreleased. But a movie like this can really
- 20:01shine light to everybody. Like, hey, this isn't how it's
- 20:04always been like you didn't. It wasn't always like this.
- 20:08This movie is important, like you to really not even just for
- 20:12gamers, but for like upcoming developers, upcoming fucking
- 20:15indie studios. Who are going to create the next
- 20:19doom? Create the next half life?
- 20:21Maybe this is what you want to see.
- 20:23You want to see this. It's a good case study.
- 20:26It wasn't a huge corporation that made Doom.
- 20:29It was 20 guys. I don't know.
- 20:31This was a number. You might.
- 20:32But it was a small team. It was a very small team.
- 20:34Small team like and I honestly agree with what you said there
- 20:38about how it's influential not just to people who enjoyed the
- 20:40product at like the end product and that's all we are, we're
- 20:43just the consumer, but. It it influences and it inspires
- 20:47younger people who want to do this for a living, right.
- 20:50I mean people just didn't wake up and decide I want to make
- 20:53movies. They got inspired by somebody
- 20:55because they're they're art. And just like games are, you
- 20:58know, so you're influencing. Yeah, I I have some ideas for a
- 21:03game, but I can't make it now. I don't have the money, I don't
- 21:05have the team, I don't have the resources blah blah blah.
- 21:08And then you see something like do more quick where it's like
- 21:09cause a small team of people, right.
- 21:11They just. They just did it.
- 21:13They just did it. Like they just decided to do it
- 21:15and then they ended up doing it right, which is, you know, kind
- 21:18of contradictory to where people.
- 21:19I just said people don't just wake up, but like they they said
- 21:22the same thing. We have an idea, let's do it.
- 21:25Let's pull our our, you know, let's put our heads together and
- 21:27let's figure this out. So.
- 21:29We would look at the FPS doc team.
- 21:32Yeah, this is something they. Wanted to do this.
- 21:35Wasn't Warner Brothers? No, dude, this is this is a very
- 21:38small, dedicated team of people. By the way, I will say that we
- 21:43are not getting paid by FPS documentary.
- 21:46We're we, we are fans and we want to be as a part of it as we
- 21:52can to be on the journey with them because this is something I
- 21:55am passionate about and Evan is well in this podcast, supports
- 21:59them and everything they fucking do.
- 22:01I just wanted to get that out of the way right now.
- 22:03But like look at them man. They just, they wanted to do
- 22:06this. They fucking did it.
- 22:09It's David's first first directorial debut.
- 22:13I think it's absolutely that's contradictory Directorial debut
- 22:16is the first, but yeah, it's his first movie like it's his first
- 22:20directing role. So and I mean it's great like we
- 22:23told him that in the interview, he did a fantastic job.
- 22:25Like I I wouldn't have known that he was like this was his
- 22:30first time doing this unless I, you know, since you had told me,
- 22:34right so. Yeah, and I'm unsure if Richard
- 22:36ever did a movie or anything because they're both authors.
- 22:38You guys should check out their books.
- 22:40Please check out their books. They're awesome, awesome fucking
- 22:43books that they've done. But like the entire team, man.
- 22:46Like Richard, David, Chris, like Robin Block for believing them
- 22:50and like helping them and just pushing along with them.
- 22:55It's a good story. Like from how this movie itself
- 23:01and how they did it is a good story.
- 23:03What You can check our podcast out to hear about it and they've
- 23:06done other interviews, check out the other podcasts they've been
- 23:08on. But the developers and it's just
- 23:13incredible and I can't recommend this movie enough to people.
- 23:17I really fucking can't. And yeah, that that's the love
- 23:21I'm getting out of the way before we get in nitty gritty.
- 23:23Yeah, I mean, I agree with with Nick Tenfold.
- 23:27It's just it's great. It's great if you're younger and
- 23:29you've never played these games and you've only heard of them.
- 23:31It's great if you were around for them and you played them and
- 23:34they influenced you. And in some way or another, the
- 23:37way they've influenced Nick or they were just fun games to play
- 23:40back in the day. You know, like a nostalgia
- 23:42thing. It is.
- 23:43Important to have this for yourself to go back to that sort
- 23:47of trip of you know, down memory lane.
- 23:49But also it's a document that shows hey, this is what was the
- 23:53first like FPS considered, You know, this is how they made
- 23:57Doom, this is how the Wolfenstein guys improved on
- 24:00DOOM, this is how the Quake guys improved on Wolfenstein and Doom
- 24:04and you know it it like we said earlier, it's Jenga building
- 24:07blocks up to the top. So it is entirely that so.
- 24:12You know, I, I give it all my praise, all my love.
- 24:16I enjoyed it so much. But yeah, that's the end.
- 24:18I think of our love affair with it now.
- 24:21We got to get into the serious stuff.
- 24:23So the movie does have a very, very, very steep runtime of
- 24:30about four hours and some change.
- 24:32Yeah, boy. Let's do it long movie People
- 24:35unite. But the cool thing?
- 24:38Yes, I, I, I I watched it in two sittings.
- 24:42And I almost got through in one, but I like was like, I really do
- 24:45do at bed. But the way that they're
- 24:47explaining how when you actually get the film is how it's going
- 24:51to be, Dude, you could watch us in chunks.
- 24:55You could watch us by the game that you want to like, learn
- 25:00more about like there's a lot. Don't be discouraged by the
- 25:03runtime, I will say because it does keep you very engaged and
- 25:07you can watch us in parts. And I almost highly recommend
- 25:10you do watch in parts. Right.
- 25:14Yeah, it's it's almost built for that in a way.
- 25:16You know, it's, I mean it is like by design, we asked them
- 25:21about that. But like that's the nice thing
- 25:26about it is that it's also not necessarily told to you, right.
- 25:30It's you're not told to watch it in multiple settings.
- 25:32You can watch it in one, but then it's like you come to find
- 25:35out, Oh no, it's actually. Kind of made in a way to break
- 25:38this up like I'm not meant to. I don't have to watch it, and
- 25:41they kind of accounted for that without having to tell me.
- 25:44You could tell by the arrows they cover.
- 25:46Yeah, right. And there's always like that.
- 25:48When they do the transition from one game to another, it's like,
- 25:50OK, there's you go. There you go.
- 25:52Pause right there. There you go.
- 25:54Perfect. Exactly which Nick loves that
- 25:57screen, by the way, I'm sure you.
- 25:59Want to get into that? Do you want to talk about that
- 26:01that's that seems to be one of your favorite things about it.
- 26:03So, so I'll let you do that. Not only is the document the
- 26:08documentary style, this movie done in such a way, for gamers
- 26:12especially, I think it's it's flashy, but it's not too flashy.
- 26:17It is just amazing. The intro of the film is such a
- 26:21fucking ass beater too. It is a fucking ass beater of an
- 26:24intro. It's amazing.
- 26:28But the way that they go about transitions is really cool cuz
- 26:32like, they show the box art of the game and it zooms right into
- 26:36an interview like a really, but like in a very stylized awesome
- 26:40way. And that's again how what we
- 26:42were saying, like with the runtime, you could break us up
- 26:44cuz it's like okay Doom is done. And then it's like it goes into
- 26:48this huge fucking like plethora of like game art.
- 26:52The covers of the box are like the.
- 26:54Box are. And then it zooms into one.
- 26:56You're like, I could definitely pause on Marathon now and I
- 26:59could hear all about Marathon or Halo or whatever.
- 27:02And it's that was done in a way where if it hadn't been done
- 27:06like that, it could have been really messy and confusing.
- 27:09But they they just stuck again. They stuck to their guns and
- 27:13they did it this way and I'm fucking so happy that it.
- 27:17Which I think works very well for a video game documentary
- 27:20because you have so many. Like it's not, it's you're not
- 27:23covering a historical event, right?
- 27:25You know you're not covering a certain day or a certain set of
- 27:27days like and even then in that regard, right.
- 27:30You can break it up for something like that.
- 27:32But if you're talking, but you also have to think of how
- 27:35different that scale is. Whereas like these games,
- 27:38realistically you can only talk about certain in terms of a
- 27:41documentary, you probably can't talk about Doom for an entire 4
- 27:45hours if you're covering all these different FPS's, right?
- 27:48You got to condense that insane story to. 10 to 20 minutes?
- 27:53Maybe. Maybe even shorter, depending.
- 27:55Even David will tell you, though, they spent a lot of time
- 27:57with Doom. Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:59Oh absolutely. You can tell but like, but
- 28:01that's the thing, right? You know, you have to account
- 28:03for that, which I think makes that transition work so well
- 28:06because it's you just you knowing going into it.
- 28:09If you're a gamer, you only semi know about FPS's and stuff.
- 28:13You know there's a lot of them, so you know they can't possibly
- 28:16spend too much time on one. So it really works to kind of
- 28:19transition. That way.
- 28:21And yeah, like, it's perfect for if you want to pause because
- 28:23yeah, it's like, okay, I wrote down all the stuff I know about
- 28:26Doom, if you're taking notes, right?
- 28:28And then now you go, oh, I'm pausing because now they're
- 28:30going to talk about Quake. And so now I can get another
- 28:32sheet of paper or whatever, right?
- 28:34So I I love that. That.
- 28:36And I like that. It's subtle.
- 28:38You're not being told to watch it in chunks.
- 28:40It's just like, hey, if you do decide that you want to go by
- 28:44game, we've thought of that for you.
- 28:46Which is exactly how it should be.
- 28:48You know you've accounted for something the audience might
- 28:50want to do. I think one of my favorite
- 28:53things that I did during the film, like just out loud, I
- 28:57would blurt when I was watching it.
- 28:59Every time it would go to a different game or get ready.
- 29:01So I'd be like, it's gonna be this, it's gonna be this, it's
- 29:03gonna be this. And then it would I was just
- 29:06like, I would just like freak out.
- 29:09Like, it's going to go to Quake. It's going to go to fucking
- 29:11Quake. And then it would go to like, it
- 29:12would like zoom in on the Quake art.
- 29:13I'm like, God, motherfucker, I do it.
- 29:15Like, were you? Were you like Rick Dalton and
- 29:17the Once Upon A Time meme where he sits up and he snaps his
- 29:20fingers? Dude.
- 29:22Dude, that's exactly. But that's exactly how I was.
- 29:25But it was such like an awesome feeling knowing if you know the
- 29:29stories of these games and you know, like the timelines like to
- 29:33be like, I know what they're about to do.
- 29:35I know what they're about to get into like.
- 29:37But the the cool thing was not knowing too because like they
- 29:40talk about Jurassic Park Trespasser which is a game.
- 29:42If you don't know which I know about Jurassic Park Trespasser
- 29:46if you don't know about it you you learn like all the some of
- 29:51like the technology we use in games now even if this game was
- 29:56a flop they still use and it helped pioneer ship for like
- 30:00half life and Gabe Newell was so impressed and like all this shit
- 30:04like I was like what the the. Trespasser, yeah.
- 30:07Yeah, like, I didn't know that. Like, I was like, what the fuck?
- 30:11It like just blew my mind, man. But yeah, I was like, God damn,
- 30:16it was just, it was just really cool shit.
- 30:18I still were to stop, like just giving it all of our love.
- 30:21But like, I just. It's like we can't really.
- 30:23Stop. It just fucking can't, man.
- 30:27Oh yeah, you know, you go. Were you going to talk about the
- 30:31transitions or anything or are you moving?
- 30:33On no, no, I think you I think you covered those quite well.
- 30:35I think that just. I I don't mind the four and a
- 30:39half hour runtime, right. I think, I mean, I kind of got
- 30:41that out of the way with my comment earlier, but I think
- 30:43that's if you can't call yourself a definitive
- 30:46documentary on something and have it be like an hour and a
- 30:48half. Like I don't know how they would
- 30:50have if if that would have been the runtime.
- 30:52I was like, what is this about to be?
- 30:53Because like you're not going to be able to get.
- 30:55Through it all you got time for like Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein
- 30:58and Halo and Halflife. Maybe like.
- 31:02You like never a lot of time. We're done.
- 31:05Yeah, right. I like that and I like that it.
- 31:10It covers everything or not. It covers a wide range, a very,
- 31:16very wide net of things. It does spend a little bit more
- 31:19time in the early or mid to late 90s, early 90s, early 2000s of
- 31:24video games, which is certainly I think important because you
- 31:27are focusing on the beginnings of it in a in a major way.
- 31:30But they do cover. Your Call of Duty, your Halo,
- 31:33your Battlefield up to a little bit more modern day shooters and
- 31:37stuff like that. So if you're more into those
- 31:39games like I am for instance, it's not like you're left
- 31:42behind. Like there's there's certainly
- 31:44coverage on it there, which is really cool to see and there's a
- 31:46lot of talk about game development obviously, right?
- 31:49I mean it's about video games. You're going to know a bit more
- 31:53about the development process, but that's really cool for me to
- 31:55see. So you can see how they what
- 31:57their process was back in the day and how it kind of changed
- 32:00over time. And kind of infer how it is now,
- 32:05I mean, which is to me personally not good, you have
- 32:11smaller studios making better games than the bigger studios
- 32:16kind of paralleling some streaming services nowadays.
- 32:23So like you have that, which is really cool and I.
- 32:27One of the big things about it, and this kind of falls under our
- 32:29opinions of it, plus I think something that's kind of not
- 32:32nittygritty, but something about it, is that how every interview
- 32:37to me it seemed like every interview with them, they
- 32:40brought up or mentioned how some other thing influenced them.
- 32:42Which I think is really cool to see.
- 32:44Like it's not just people thinking of random things in
- 32:49their own boardrooms or their own conference rooms and then
- 32:51going out and doing it. It's like, well, they did that.
- 32:54How do we do that better or how do we do that differently or how
- 32:56do we, you know, like they saw what was it?
- 32:58They were all fucking friends. They weren't necessarily all
- 33:02over each other in terms of I gotta crush that guy.
- 33:04They're like, Oh my God, you did something cool from what we did.
- 33:07Like, they're they're almost honored.
- 33:08They're honored and flattered. Check out your demo, man.
- 33:11Until they get to Halflife and they're like, yeah, we were
- 33:14going to release this game and then we saw we got, we all got
- 33:16the demo of Halflife and we were like.
- 33:20We can't do this, which is like totally something that can.
- 33:23That can happen. But like, even then, right?
- 33:25It's not like they were sitting there immediately sting about
- 33:27how they could get some sort of piece of the pie.
- 33:29They were just like, Oh yeah, probably not a good idea.
- 33:30They're like, how the fuck did this?
- 33:32How did, how did they do that? Like that, yeah.
- 33:35But then that's the question, right?
- 33:36How do they do that? I want to do that.
- 33:38It's it's like learning skateboarding tricks or riding
- 33:41up like bike, You know, you're learning from your peers and the
- 33:45people around you and going like, well, no, I'm just.
- 33:47It's like the the 60s with the British music scene, right?
- 33:51Everybody was improving off of something else, like or taking
- 33:55something that somebody else didn't going well.
- 33:56I want to do that differently. But which is like really cool to
- 34:00see, except it's a nerdy version where we're shooting demons and
- 34:03like random aliens and shit instead of music, which is cool,
- 34:06you know, we everybody likes shooting some demons.
- 34:08But yeah, I really like that. That's a major part of it of
- 34:12it's not like regimented, almost like.
- 34:17It's not compartmentalized where this company did this thing
- 34:20without any influence or, you know, advice from another team.
- 34:23It's like a little community, which is really cool to see and
- 34:26you can also see how that changes as they get further into
- 34:29the future, not future, but further into modern day.
- 34:33In the timeline. Further down the timeline, yeah.
- 34:38How a lot of like the early days.
- 34:40They're like, pretty much like we have a fucking clue what
- 34:44we're doing. Yeah, there's a lot of that in
- 34:46the beginning, which is like, I had no idea what we had no idea
- 34:50we were just. Trying.
- 34:51And it was like, well, I'm glad you fucking did.
- 34:56The interviews were done masterfully, I think, and I
- 34:59liked how they all went. And like during one game they
- 35:02would, it would flash to like someone else from a different
- 35:06team or company or who made a different game going.
- 35:09Yeah, that shit was wild and it would just go right back in
- 35:12like. And it's not just the creators.
- 35:14Like you had the Angry Video Game Nerd, you had G Man on
- 35:18there and like the whole John Romero BFG thing where it's
- 35:22like, do you know what BFG stands for and just cuts John
- 35:24Mayer going big fucking gun. And I was like, he said the
- 35:28thing, it's like moments like that in the interviews that I
- 35:31really, really appreciate and it's it's just they were just
- 35:35masterfully done, man. It lightens it up a bit, right?
- 35:38It's comedic and it's nice to just kind of break away from.
- 35:41Necessarily all the talking for a second, you know, you laugh a
- 35:44bit. I I like that too.
- 35:45That was definitely a highlight. I do remember specifically,
- 35:48yeah, John Romero saying big fucking gun.
- 35:50But like I did like the cuts where you know, they're asking
- 35:53somebody a question that cuts to the, you know, another member
- 35:56reference and they said. Even kick from like night dive
- 35:59going. Yep.
- 36:01Yeah, you know that it was really cool to see that.
- 36:03It was cool to see how like, again, the camaraderie.
- 36:09Around it, right? You know, we're only trying to
- 36:11do better than each other in like a really healthy way.
- 36:15Like wasn't trying to crush the other person, wasn't trying to
- 36:18run him out of business. Just creative people doing what
- 36:22they do and and just taking, you know, almost like athletes,
- 36:25right? One athlete, you know, they do
- 36:27something really good. So now the other guy who thinks
- 36:29he's just as good or better is going to go and do the same
- 36:32thing, right? He's going to try and do it
- 36:33better. So it's the same thing.
- 36:35And that's really evident. I'd say through that era of the
- 36:4090s until like the early 2000s, right.
- 36:43I mean and sadly I think we've maybe it's not as obvious now
- 36:47but like or not as clear as like this documentary made it out to
- 36:51be for them. But like you don't really hear
- 36:54about that as much now. You don't hear about that sort
- 36:56of competition in the in a healthy way, right.
- 36:59Because everything we think of everything as companies and and
- 37:03how much money they're making or how much money they're losing
- 37:06and. You know, do they have a good
- 37:09season, the games coming out or something like that, But not
- 37:11because I I guess, I don't know, maybe I'm not making sense
- 37:14there. But you see what I'm saying?
- 37:15Like we just kind of think of everything now as it's just a
- 37:19monetary thing of yeah, that's not going to make a lot of money
- 37:21or that's going to cost way too much or something like that.
- 37:23It's you don't really hear about the competition between certain
- 37:27developers or more. And I'd say honestly, and I get
- 37:30this because I am a Naughty Dog fan, but I'd say he, Neil
- 37:33Dreckman's probably the most. Famous video game director slash
- 37:38president of a video game development company right now,
- 37:40and I think that's mostly due to the fact that the show came out.
- 37:43Like. So his name was all over
- 37:45everything and whatnot and but I mean he's been I think he's if
- 37:50anybody deserves it it's probably him.
- 37:51He did start working at the Mailroom and Naughty Dog and now
- 37:53he's the president. So it's you know certainly not
- 37:56like he just walked in and took the job but yeah no I I.
- 38:00I liked that. I'd love to see.
- 38:02Maybe if they do like another documentary about video games,
- 38:06kind of be cool to see him in it.
- 38:08But even though he has nothing to do with FBS game.
- 38:10I really hope they do another documentary, whether it be FPS,
- 38:13Doc, two or. Your sequel be TPS.
- 38:18Versus That'd be interesting. There's.
- 38:21War and everything in there. That'd be sweet.
- 38:22That would be cool, yeah. I'd love to see some some Gears
- 38:25of War stuff and and yeah, just, I mean maybe do like.
- 38:29The second FPS documentary includes third person is a DLC.
- 38:32That'd be sweet. I.
- 38:33Don't know. I'm just, I'm spitballing here,
- 38:34if you hired. Paul.
- 38:36Yeah. Come on, please.
- 38:37We hate our jumps. You don't hate yours.
- 38:40I hate mine. No, but you said it this on air.
- 38:43I love, I love, I love my job. But that's on recording, Doug.
- 38:47I know I haven't. Does not hate his job.
- 38:48I'm. In so much trouble.
- 38:50Your dad, if you listen to my son, doesn't hate his job.
- 38:54That's an idiot. He's gonna, he's gonna go.
- 38:56All right, let me see how you bad.
- 38:58You really hate it. He's gonna do some bad.
- 39:01He's gonna do some. Bad.
- 39:02He's gonna do some bad. Yeah, man, the movie is
- 39:07fantastic. You ready to give it?
- 39:08You ready to give it our rating? Yeah, I mean, we kind of already
- 39:12if you have, if you follow us on Instagram or Twitter, you
- 39:14already know, but you should go follow if you want to hear it
- 39:18early next time. I don't know.
- 39:18I'm trying to get people to go follow our stuff.
- 39:20Yeah, please just go to our go to our socials, please.
- 39:22It helps us out, All right? We give it a 10 out of 10.
- 39:27I'm giving it a 10 out of 10 fps.
- 39:30Stock gets a 10 out of 10 from us.
- 39:33It has to. It has to get a 10 out of 10.
- 39:35This movie was everything and more I wanted it to be.
- 39:38I think it's important for everybody who loves video games,
- 39:42whether you play FPS or not, to watch this.
- 39:46It's an important documentary to see why we have the games we
- 39:49have today and why those games are important that they do
- 39:53cover. Not again.
- 39:56Not only for gamers, but for future creators.
- 39:59Again, the next people who make the next Doom, the next half
- 40:02life, the the next Anything you you create, look back and go.
- 40:07There's my fucking like that is the block right there.
- 40:11That is like the fucking testament right there as to why
- 40:15I want to do this and how we should do this.
- 40:18This is what you can do with dedicated people, yeah.
- 40:21Exactly, exactly. Nick's absolutely right.
- 40:25I couldn't couldn't have said it better myself.
- 40:26Like it's just fantastic. I I've, I've watched a good bit
- 40:31of documentaries not necessarily about video games.
- 40:33So to see one that is covered so well and so we we didn't cover
- 40:39this and I'm going to add it in now because I think it's very
- 40:42important they didn't treat video games like they were some
- 40:45nerdy thing. Every documentary I've seen
- 40:48about video games that is made by people who have never played
- 40:52them, treat them exactly the way that you would expect they make
- 40:56it. There's tons of 8 bit music in
- 40:58there which no gamer likes except for the Nintendo fanboys,
- 41:01which is fine. You have your rights, you're you
- 41:04know, have your own opinion. You're wrong.
- 41:05It's terrible. It creates.
- 41:07David likes Nintendo. That's fine.
- 41:09Sorry David, but like that's. But David likes it because he
- 41:16likes it and he knows what it is like and I give him that
- 41:19respect. I believe that he likes it for a
- 41:21real reason other than like, yeah, all the nerds will like
- 41:23that music. Like it's it's you know the we
- 41:27brought it up in our interview. I talked about I think it was
- 41:29high score. That was the Netflix one and
- 41:32it's just you're talking. You said it.
- 41:35Nick said it best during our interview where he said and I
- 41:38agree with him, that Richard and and David they were talking.
- 41:44To us, not at us. They weren't talking down to us
- 41:47like, you're stupid and this is how games are made.
- 41:49This is like they were like, this is how they were made
- 41:51because you're a fan and you probably want to know this.
- 41:53Like the high score documentary did this, did that.
- 41:56It was just like, yeah, no, like we did it because of this and
- 41:59blah, blah blah blah. You're talking at me like, I
- 42:03don't know what games are or something like that.
- 42:06And maybe that's the case for people who have never played
- 42:08them before, But I feel like the people who have never played
- 42:10them before watching that are feeling like, well, why am I
- 42:11being talked to you? Like I'm stupid?
- 42:13Right, exactly. That's not what this does at
- 42:15all. Yeah, so, like, that's a very
- 42:18piece of high praise that I wanted to give it and make sure
- 42:20we didn't leave out. Is that it?
- 42:21It doesn't treat you like you're a moron who has no idea what
- 42:24video games are. It assumes that you know
- 42:26something about them which is totally right to you pick up
- 42:29quickly, right? You don't have to be an Uber
- 42:31nerd like Nick or myself about it, but if you know video games
- 42:34and you know Fps's and stuff. You're gonna be in for a great
- 42:37treat. And if you've just looked video
- 42:38games and like the history of, you're gonna be in for a great
- 42:40treat. So absolutely fucking lutely.
- 42:43We give it a 10 out of 10 for sure. 10 out of fucking 10 And
- 42:46if you want to still get a physical copy of this movie and
- 42:52your name in the title, go to fps.com and order yours right

- 43:23the Doom Marine box. As soon as we get that in, we
- 43:26will be doing a unboxing and a review of it, cuz I'm very
- 43:30excited for that to be on my shelf.
