- 0:03Speaker 1: Open your heart to me, Phoebe. Everyone's hearts need to
- 0:08Speaker 1: be open and holes hearts and holes and minds, the
- 0:12Speaker 1: big three hearts holes, minds open.
- 0:17Speaker 2: She's sheen a me non not my name? Yo?
- 0:23Speaker 1: No yo?
- 0:25Speaker 2: What is your childe rama?
- 0:28Speaker 3: I am a chook.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Your life's going down the floor like.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Round.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Welcome to Like a Virgin, the show where we give
- 0:47Speaker 1: yesterday's pop culture today's takes. I'm famously Rose Damu.
- 0:51Speaker 3: And I'm not so famously fan Torondo, and I think
- 0:54Speaker 3: pretty famously. Oh you think, well, yeah, I consider myself
- 0:58Speaker 3: not to be a niche legend and not so much famous.
- 1:01Speaker 1: But yes, not anywhere near as famous as Jocelyn one
- 1:06Speaker 1: name only of the idol, which I guess we're now
- 1:10Speaker 1: both caught up on because the last time we talked
- 1:14Speaker 1: about it, you.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Hadn't watched it yet, right, And then wow, now we
- 1:18Speaker 3: both watched all three episodes.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yes, and my stance has not changed. I think I
- 1:30Speaker 1: said this with the first two episodes played out exactly
- 1:35Speaker 1: the same for me, where there was the first half
- 1:38Speaker 1: where I was very interested in what was going on
- 1:41Speaker 1: with Jocelyn and her team and the whole thing surrounding
- 1:46Speaker 1: this embattled pop star trying to make a comeback, and
- 1:50Speaker 1: the inner machinations of the industry thought that was very interesting.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And then the second half of the episode, when the
- 1:56Speaker 1: Weekend came into it, I like completely checked out my brain,
- 2:01Speaker 1: just like emptied because it was bad and because the
- 2:05Speaker 1: Weekend's acting is really bad. And then this third episode
- 2:09Speaker 1: everything changed because it was almost entirely about the Weekend
- 2:13Speaker 1: and the cult of it all. So now the show
- 2:15Speaker 1: is just bad.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yeah, the third episode was not good.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, So I finally watched the pilot in the
- 2:22Speaker 3: second episode, and I felt like, honestly, I was I
- 2:26Speaker 3: was extremely surprised by how much I liked. I think
- 2:31Speaker 3: that Lily Rose Depp is kind of great, Like she's
- 2:34Speaker 3: a really good actress, amazing, And you know, it's funny
- 2:37Speaker 3: because she is the kind of actress that I just
- 2:41Speaker 3: like despise, Like she's like Emma Robert's adjacent, like completely nondescript,
- 2:46Speaker 3: like toothpick model girl. And when actresses like that are
- 2:51Speaker 3: just like good actresses, I still can't really see them
- 2:54Speaker 3: because I'm like, what are your defining characteristics? But for
- 2:57Speaker 3: the idol, those like the kind of nondescript, generic hotness
- 3:03Speaker 3: she has lends itself perfectly to her kind of like
- 3:07Speaker 3: characterized celebrity, Like she looks exactly like someone who would
- 3:11Speaker 3: be famous, you know, yes, and because she is.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Right, right, right, and.
- 3:19Speaker 1: She's like she's like genetically engineered to look like a
- 3:22Speaker 1: hot famous person.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Yeah, And you know, I think, especially in the first
- 3:26Speaker 3: kind of I think the first twenty minutes of the
- 3:28Speaker 3: pilot are We're so funny and gripping, and I loved
- 3:32Speaker 3: how the humor and the witticism's like we're really jumping
- 3:36Speaker 3: out even when like the common I think the commentary
- 3:39Speaker 3: about like pop culture and celebrity and cancel culture can
- 3:41Speaker 3: be like a lit all hay, I'm fisted sometimes, but
- 3:44Speaker 3: like when the joke is funny, it's funny. I think
- 3:47Speaker 3: my primary concern was that, just like you, like, I
- 3:50Speaker 3: loved the world of this idol, the world of this
- 3:54Speaker 3: like pop star and all the people in orchestration with
- 3:58Speaker 3: her who are kind of like controlling her, manipulating her,
- 4:01Speaker 3: but there are too many characters Like I love the
- 4:05Speaker 3: stunt casting, and I individually love Dan Levy, harnef choice
- 4:11Speaker 3: Avon like all all these other Jane Adams.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yes, so I was missing her so much in this
- 4:17Speaker 1: third episode.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah, me too, Like Divine Joy. Randolph is also so funny.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I remember she was like my favorite part of High Fidelity. Yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 3: but like there are so many of them that I
- 4:29Speaker 3: was like by the third episode, just you said, I
- 4:31Speaker 3: was like, where did they go?
- 4:31Speaker 2: I miss them?
- 4:32Speaker 3: The show is not like living or breathing without them,
- 4:35Speaker 3: but I really did. I was so surprised by what
- 4:38Speaker 3: I liked. And wait, let's talk about the sex scenes
- 4:41Speaker 3: in episode one, not episode three.
- 4:43Speaker 2: We'll get to that.
- 4:44Speaker 3: But like episode one when she is masturbating, and also
- 4:48Speaker 3: when they pulled the sheet over her head a robe,
- 4:52Speaker 3: the silk robe, I didn't mind it, Like I was like,
- 4:56Speaker 3: I was like shock value for the sake of shock value,
- 4:59Speaker 3: work on a kind of euphoria skins level, Like it
- 5:02Speaker 3: was delivering what I was expecting. It didn't offend me,
- 5:06Speaker 3: and it informed me about both of the characters. I
- 5:09Speaker 3: learned more about them and about their inner worlds through
- 5:13Speaker 3: the sex. So that's why episode three was like you
- 5:18Speaker 3: disagree with that, Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I agree with it. On on Lily rose.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Depths side, Yeah, when she was don't agree with it
- 5:27Speaker 3: about the weekend, I mean just I'm talking about just
- 5:29Speaker 3: the first episode, which she was like choking herself and masturbating.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I was like, Okay, I think I understand what you
- 5:33Speaker 3: get out of sex, what you want like on your own,
- 5:36Speaker 3: and therefore it kind of justified what was an uncomfortable
- 5:41Speaker 3: power dynamic between her and the Weekend. I think that
- 5:44Speaker 3: when the Weekend came in and they finally fucked, I
- 5:47Speaker 3: kind of understood that he needed that power dynamic in
- 5:50Speaker 3: whatever their relationship would be. And yeah, I think I
- 5:53Speaker 3: just knew him to be manipulative kind of and taking
- 5:56Speaker 3: advantage of her kink for the sake of also like
- 5:59Speaker 3: kind of send truly controlling her. Like it seems to
- 6:01Speaker 3: be some kind of sex cult.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I think I think what has unraveled for
- 6:08Speaker 1: me specifically in the third episode is that, yes, it's
- 6:15Speaker 1: a cult, but it's also very much this thing that
- 6:20Speaker 1: we've seen with public figures of the new manager person
- 6:26Speaker 1: coming into their lives, like thinking about like Brittany with
- 6:31Speaker 1: like what was the name Sam Lutfi. You know, this
- 6:34Speaker 1: man who they're like romantically attached with and then takes
- 6:36Speaker 1: over their careers and it is running the shots and
- 6:39Speaker 1: is like usually very much like why is she fucking.
- 6:42Speaker 3: This kind of ugly guy. That, to me is what's
- 6:48Speaker 3: happening with the weekend, even more so than a cult thing.
- 6:53Speaker 3: And yeah, I mean in the third episode, like just
- 6:59Speaker 3: everything in the show is working except for his performance,
- 7:05Speaker 3: and the show is unfortunately hinging more and more.
- 7:10Speaker 2: On his performance.
- 7:11Speaker 1: And nowhere was that clearer than the scene where they're
- 7:16Speaker 1: having dinner and Ted DROs pushes Jocelyn to open up
- 7:20Speaker 1: about her trauma and Lily Rose Deep is actually giving
- 7:23Speaker 1: a fantastic you want vulnerable performance and Abel is giving nothing.
- 7:32Speaker 1: It's just it's not that he's giving nothing, it's that
- 7:36Speaker 1: he's giving all one thing. And yet he and the
- 7:40Speaker 1: show want us to buy into him as this complicated
- 7:45Speaker 1: figure who has all of these different agendas. But if
- 7:48Speaker 1: that's true, as an actor, his job is to clue
- 7:52Speaker 1: us into some of that, and he is not doing it.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And yet and all of the sort of supplemental material
- 7:58Speaker 1: that exists around the show, namely his interviews, he talks
- 8:02Speaker 1: about it, about all the different things that this guy
- 8:06Speaker 1: is thinking and feeling and doing and manipulating, and yet
- 8:09Speaker 1: none of that is on the screen. Now I believe
- 8:12Speaker 1: that it's I believe that it's in the script, and
- 8:14Speaker 1: I believe that it's slightly in the direction, but it's
- 8:17Speaker 1: not coming through in his acting, and that is a problem.
- 8:21Speaker 1: He's just playing it all one note.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Because he's a bad actor.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And also it's so fucking it takes me out of
- 8:31Speaker 1: it so much when he's in the show and then
- 8:34Speaker 1: I hear ye his voice come in on the soundtrack, like, yes,
- 8:40Speaker 1: you are, you know, a huge musician, and obviously you
- 8:45Speaker 1: want to be involved in the music and the show.
- 8:47Speaker 1: That doesn't mean you need to sing on it, because
- 8:50Speaker 1: all it does is remind me that you are the
- 8:52Speaker 1: Weekend and you are not the character that you're playing. Yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 1: I one hundred percent agree.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I I really just such a sanity for him to
- 9:01Speaker 3: want to be across every part of this show when
- 9:05Speaker 3: in fact he could have stuck more behind the scenes.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And I believe that he has very important insight into
- 9:14Speaker 3: the music industry that has gone into the creation and
- 9:18Speaker 3: the writing of this show. That doesn't mean that he
- 9:20Speaker 3: needed to be one of the stars of it.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I mean, like I so I was an og weekend Stan,
- 9:28Speaker 3: like I was a house of balloons, like the Morning,
- 9:32Speaker 3: like Weekend Stan and everybody who was there at the
- 9:35Speaker 3: ground level knows that he like sold out big time,
- 9:39Speaker 3: Like he sold out. Like I know, the term sold
- 9:42Speaker 3: out is like so like convoluted and stupid, but like
- 9:44Speaker 3: he is like the definition of selling out because he
- 9:49Speaker 3: made Tumblr music and now he's basically one of the
- 9:51Speaker 3: biggest musicians of the world.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And I think he has the most stream song ever
- 9:55Speaker 1: on Spotify.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that that in and of itself
- 9:59Speaker 3: actually makes him perfect for the show. I think it
- 10:04Speaker 3: would have made sense to cast him if he could act,
- 10:07Speaker 3: and I think it is perfect honestly for the music supervision,
- 10:11Speaker 3: But in reality, they should have cast someone else who
- 10:14Speaker 3: someone who could act, and someone who honestly was just hot,
- 10:18Speaker 3: like hotter, like someone who had this dark sexuality.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Like he is not sexy to me.
- 10:22Speaker 3: He's not hot, he's not giving me facial expressions.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I actually didn't need the character to be hot. I
- 10:29Speaker 1: actually think it would have been more interesting. I mean,
- 10:32Speaker 1: they're not going to cast ugly people on TV.
- 10:34Speaker 3: But if he had more of especially more of a
- 10:37Speaker 3: sort of sexy ugly quality, because that's that's the role.
- 10:41Speaker 3: He's like stee, you know, I just there's so much
- 10:46Speaker 3: interesting stuff going on. Like one of the scenes I
- 10:49Speaker 3: really liked was the scene where they're in the recording
- 10:56Speaker 3: studio and they're talking about Moses. Somny is talking about
- 10:59Speaker 3: how they don't say no to anything, and Joscelyn is like,
- 11:04Speaker 3: is like pushing back at him, and he's saying, no,
- 11:08Speaker 3: I would say yes to this, I would say yes
- 11:09Speaker 3: to this, I would say yes to this.
- 11:10Speaker 1: We don't say no to anything. This is Tedris's philosophy.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And then she says, well, what if I wanted you
- 11:14Speaker 1: to fuck me? And he goes, oh, well he would
- 11:17Speaker 1: kill me, and so that, like that is so interesting.
- 11:20Speaker 1: That's very good writing. That's telling us so much about
- 11:25Speaker 1: what's going on here. And then as soon as the
- 11:28Speaker 1: person that they're talking about comes on screen, it's like
- 11:30Speaker 1: all of that tension and suspense and intrigue I was
- 11:33Speaker 1: feeling just fucking evaporates.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you didn't watch all of Euphoria, but you watched
- 11:39Speaker 3: enough at least to know that, like Sam Levinson writes,
- 11:42Speaker 3: I think well writes really cartoonishly evil characters, right, like
- 11:48Speaker 3: Nay and his Dad and Euphoria are cartoonishly evil, but
- 11:52Speaker 3: the show earns that kind of like dark complexity to
- 11:55Speaker 3: it an extent, like it is like a very extreme
- 11:58Speaker 3: version of a villain, and like, I think in a
- 12:01Speaker 3: way that we haven't seen on TV before. But I
- 12:05Speaker 3: don't really feel like and it seems like Tedris is
- 12:10Speaker 3: like meant to be.
- 12:11Speaker 2: This kind of amorphous unknown figure.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Like he's supposed to be mysterious, but like we don't
- 12:16Speaker 3: have any sort of justification of his actions or any
- 12:19Speaker 3: like weaknesses. We don't see a crack in what he's doing.
- 12:23Speaker 3: And I'm having a hard time with Moses's character too, Isaac,
- 12:27Speaker 3: Like some of these characters sometimes feel like set pieces,
- 12:31Speaker 3: like they're not really They're just like cogs in the
- 12:33Speaker 3: machine of the other characters, where like Rachel Senne, you know,
- 12:38Speaker 3: is like.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Moving plot points along.
- 12:39Speaker 3: You know, Troy Savon now stepping in, I think and
- 12:42Speaker 3: moving plot points along. And Troy is a good actor.
- 12:45Speaker 3: I like his performance in the show. Also, girl girl
- 12:50Speaker 3: who Moses is really good. The girl who is playing
- 12:52Speaker 3: the piano, she's good and she was singing at the
- 12:56Speaker 3: end of episode two.
- 12:57Speaker 2: What is her function?
- 12:58Speaker 4: The family thing?
- 12:59Speaker 2: All the it's what are all the cult members?
- 13:02Speaker 5: Like?
- 13:02Speaker 1: What?
- 13:02Speaker 2: I guess they're just like set dressing.
- 13:04Speaker 1: No They're they're drawing her, they're drawing her into their web.
- 13:07Speaker 1: They're making her feel like she's one of them.
- 13:10Speaker 3: One more thing that I want to say, because I
- 13:12Speaker 3: was talking about the sex scenes in the first episode,
- 13:16Speaker 3: and I was trying to get to this point of
- 13:18Speaker 3: how this third episode was so filled with gratuitous sex
- 13:24Speaker 3: scenes that were like pornographic and like, I love a
- 13:27Speaker 3: hot sex scene. I love a sex scene that goes there,
- 13:32Speaker 3: but like there was no point of view.
- 13:36Speaker 2: The sex wasn't like specific or kinky.
- 13:38Speaker 3: It didn't tell us anything about any of the characters
- 13:41Speaker 3: more than what we had already known. It was like
- 13:44Speaker 3: it didn't have like a cinematic point of view. Like
- 13:46Speaker 3: it felt hard to watch, especially knowing and on it.
- 13:49Speaker 3: I don't want to like recap the controversy, but like
- 13:52Speaker 3: understanding that you know, they don't have intimacy coordinators and
- 13:54Speaker 3: there's all this like controversy around how the sex scenes
- 13:57Speaker 3: were handled. Like I feel like I would have felt
- 14:00Speaker 3: weird about it even if I didn't know all that right,
- 14:03Speaker 3: Like I feel like if and also, just as we've
- 14:07Speaker 3: been talking, it's like, because he's not interesting, there's not
- 14:11Speaker 3: much we can glean from this episode where basically nothing happened,
- 14:16Speaker 3: Like they talked a little bit about the album cover,
- 14:18Speaker 3: and I think the dinner conversation gave us a little
- 14:21Speaker 3: plotin movement.
- 14:22Speaker 2: The rest of episode nothing happened. Nothing.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I actually think the sex is all incredibly tame,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and I'm starting to believe that all of the press
- 14:33Speaker 1: leading up to the show was a huge conspiracy theory,
- 14:37Speaker 1: like inside job to make people interested, because the way
- 14:41Speaker 1: that critics talked about the show as if it was
- 14:44Speaker 1: the most offensive thing that's ever been committed to film,
- 14:49Speaker 1: when in fact it's like very basic sex is it's
- 14:54Speaker 1: giving payola. Yeah, well, okay, from a fake pop star
- 14:59Speaker 1: to a very pop star. I saw Kylie Minoak this weekend.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yes you did? Oh my god? Wait what where did
- 15:07Speaker 2: you see her?
- 15:08Speaker 1: She did this show at Jones Beach. It was a
- 15:13Speaker 1: part of It was like a promotional radio show for Kati.
- 15:19Speaker 1: It's called Katie Euphoria. And I went because my brother
- 15:25Speaker 1: had tickets and asked super last minute if I wanted
- 15:29Speaker 1: to come, So my friend Ryan and I went with
- 15:31Speaker 1: him and his friend Matt. We drove out to Jones Beach,
- 15:34Speaker 1: which I'd never been to before. It was a little
- 15:40Speaker 1: run down and there was a there was a VIP
- 15:47Speaker 1: boat that we spent some time. All you got on
- 15:50Speaker 1: a boat, I got it.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Well, it was doc.
- 15:54Speaker 1: But the boat there was a bar and food on it,
- 15:56Speaker 1: which was nice. But the boat was like, So, have
- 16:00Speaker 1: over been to Jones Beach?
- 16:01Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So Jones Beach is it's an outdoor concert venue that's
- 16:06Speaker 1: right on the water, and the water comes up like
- 16:10Speaker 1: right to the floor of the stadium. And when we
- 16:14Speaker 1: got there, the tide was already like pretty high. It
- 16:16Speaker 1: was like right at the level of the floor. And
- 16:19Speaker 1: then at one point during the show the water like
- 16:23Speaker 1: like overflowed and we we tried to go back on
- 16:26Speaker 1: the boat to get drinks, but the but the part
- 16:29Speaker 1: of the stadium where you could access the boat had
- 16:32Speaker 1: been flooded by and we sat separately from my brother
- 16:37Speaker 1: and his friend, and he said that at one point
- 16:38Speaker 1: during the show, their section flooded and so they like
- 16:42Speaker 1: couldn't they had to like stand on their seats or something.
- 16:45Speaker 2: My god, they're going down with the ship.
- 16:47Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 16:47Speaker 2: It was crazy. And you were the unsinkable Molly Brown.
- 16:50Speaker 1: The unclockable Molly Brown. So the show was programmed with
- 16:56Speaker 1: a bunch of sort of like Kylie adjacent acts, some
- 17:01Speaker 1: you know, uh, club divas, like Deborah Cox, who was incredible.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I was so gagged by her. She was amazing. She
- 17:12Speaker 1: looked incredible, sounded incredible, had this like such like this
- 17:18Speaker 1: very enigmatic stage presence, and she just like fucking tore
- 17:23Speaker 1: this girl. This this woman Kristen w who apparently she
- 17:27Speaker 1: was like she was well, she was like very well
- 17:32Speaker 1: known in the nineties club scene and like even my
- 17:34Speaker 1: brother said she used to perform at clubs all the time.
- 17:37Speaker 1: She like she at one point had a song and
- 17:40Speaker 1: I think the Queers Folks soundtrack and there's a music
- 17:43Speaker 1: video of her with the Queers focast that she had
- 17:46Speaker 1: playing during her show. She was really great. She played
- 17:49Speaker 1: a saxophone. At one point she did she did say
- 17:52Speaker 1: something kind of transferred by on the microphone. No. Yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 1: So that wasn't great.
- 17:59Speaker 4: But then after you.
- 18:00Speaker 3: Know, hours of being there, Kylie came on and Kylie
- 18:07Speaker 3: was so great.
- 18:08Speaker 1: It was such a fun show. She was the only
- 18:10Speaker 1: one who did a proper set, Like all of the
- 18:14Speaker 1: other sets were like a couple songs, and she did
- 18:17Speaker 1: like seven or eight songs. She did like a forty
- 18:20Speaker 1: minute set. She you know, obviously did all the hits
- 18:25Speaker 1: Can't get You out of My Head, get out of
- 18:28Speaker 1: My Way. She ended with Padam Padam, which was super fun.
- 18:32Speaker 1: She sounded great, She was very cute. I was like
- 18:37Speaker 1: slightly underwhelmed by her as a performer, just because I
- 18:42Speaker 1: wanted a little more energy from her. And also for
- 18:48Speaker 1: a lot of the songs she wasn't singing the chorus. Oh,
- 18:52Speaker 1: and she would be like she would just let the
- 18:55Speaker 1: audience sing the chorus and like, Babe, I'm not booked.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I did not come here to sing. I came here
- 19:02Speaker 1: to see you sing, So please sing the choruses because
- 19:06Speaker 1: those are the parts that of the songs that we
- 19:10Speaker 1: want to hear you sing.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess she is. I mean she's only fifty five,
- 19:15Speaker 2: like she can still be in her prime. I guess I.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, especially don't spot put on Padam is such
- 19:21Speaker 3: a banger, Like what the fuck is that song? I
- 19:24Speaker 3: mean she did during pud Padam, but you know, like
- 19:26Speaker 3: the she opened with Can't get You out of My
- 19:28Speaker 3: Head and did not sing a single chorus throughout the
- 19:33Speaker 3: entire song. She would like speak sing it a little
- 19:36Speaker 3: but she was really just tossing it to the audience
- 19:38Speaker 3: and she did close with all the lovers. She came
- 19:42Speaker 3: back and did an encore of it, which was the
- 19:44Speaker 3: song that Ryan had really been hoping to hear, and
- 19:46Speaker 3: he was like very moved by it. Okay, she Ryan
- 19:49Speaker 3: and my brother Jeff like Kylie is their their diva.
- 19:54Speaker 1: She's not my diva like that. So I was happy
- 19:57Speaker 1: to be along for the ride. But I don't care
- 20:00Speaker 1: about her like that. But I will say it was
- 20:02Speaker 1: such a fun show. I haven't danced that much at
- 20:06Speaker 1: a concert in a long time. I had a great
- 20:10Speaker 1: night with everyone that I went there with, and it
- 20:13Speaker 1: was the only concert I've ever been to where there
- 20:17Speaker 1: was zero line for the women's bathroom and an incredibly
- 20:21Speaker 1: long line for the men's.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Love that love to hear that, I mean, women be women. Yeah.
- 20:27Speaker 3: I also am not really a Kylie stan I think
- 20:30Speaker 3: we definitely we've already said it, we need to do
- 20:32Speaker 3: a Kylie Epp so that we can learn more about her.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Because I was reading about how padam Param has put
- 20:39Speaker 3: her in like that UK record for you know, solo
- 20:43Speaker 3: women artists having number one hits in every decade for
- 20:49Speaker 3: the last four years or something, and she's like one
- 20:51Speaker 3: of four people to ever do or four women to
- 20:53Speaker 3: ever do it, And that makes complete sense to me.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Did you ever read Zadie Smith's book that kind of
- 21:01Speaker 3: spoofs her as a celebrity. It's called I've never read
- 21:04Speaker 3: a book in my life? Wow, I thought maybe this
- 21:08Speaker 3: would be the Okay, it's called Swing Time. It's like
- 21:10Speaker 3: one of the few literary novels that I've read in
- 21:13Speaker 3: like the last five year, five uh, five seven years
- 21:17Speaker 3: or whatever, because it's very literary and not really my tea.
- 21:20Speaker 3: But there's a there's a kind of pop star in
- 21:23Speaker 3: the book that is maybe loosely based on Kylie Interesting.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Oh you know what pissed me off? There was no
- 21:31Speaker 1: merch at the show at all. You know my toxic
- 21:35Speaker 1: trait is I never really buy merch at the show.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I buy the bootleg after I bought the Joni Mitchell
- 21:43Speaker 1: Brandy Carlisle bootleg, like.
- 21:45Speaker 3: I want the official merch and that's just leaving money
- 21:49Speaker 3: on the table, Kylie, come on, it is I would
- 21:53Speaker 3: have bought a put On butt plug, you know, or
- 21:57Speaker 3: it was or it was really it was really cold
- 21:59Speaker 3: that night. I would have bought a hoodie just to
- 22:01Speaker 3: be warm, you know, like she really she really missed out.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Bummer. Well, I have to ask you, just because you
- 22:10Speaker 2: brought it up.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Before record, you've notified me that you started watching the
- 22:15Speaker 3: other two.
- 22:16Speaker 2: What I'm kind of gaffed.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I was basically forced into it by
- 22:26Speaker 1: constantly seeing people talk about it on Twitter and seeing
- 22:29Speaker 1: clips of it. And I haven't had something to binge
- 22:34Speaker 1: in a while, and this weekend I just decided to
- 22:38Speaker 1: do it because after going to Kylie on Saturday, I
- 22:41Speaker 1: was like exhausted on Sunday and so I just wanted
- 22:45Speaker 1: to like binge something all day.
- 22:47Speaker 4: So, yeah, I.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Watched the other two and I do like it. How
- 22:53Speaker 3: much of it have you watched so far?
- 22:55Speaker 1: I've watched through the beginning of season three, so they're
- 22:59Speaker 1: very short episodes and like short season.
- 23:01Speaker 3: So in the first season I think is really good.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I think the first.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I said I would stop watching if
- 23:08Speaker 1: an episode passed in which I did not laugh out
- 23:11Speaker 1: loud once, and that hasn't happened yet and I still
- 23:14Speaker 1: will stick true to that rule. I mean, the beginning
- 23:17Speaker 1: of season three is not very good, and I do
- 23:21Speaker 1: think it's like literally engineered for gay Twitter in a
- 23:26Speaker 1: way that's pretty annoying. But I'm enjoying it more than
- 23:31Speaker 1: I'm rolling my eyes at it, so I'm just gonna
- 23:34Speaker 1: keep watching.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I think it feels less like Twitter and more like
- 23:38Speaker 3: really well produced SNL by and for gay people, Like
- 23:43Speaker 3: if it was an all gay writers which makes sense
- 23:45Speaker 3: because he was an SNL writer and he's gay, but
- 23:47Speaker 3: if it was like an all gay writers room, all
- 23:49Speaker 3: gay production team for like SNL. Sometimes, like the show
- 23:53Speaker 3: feels like a series of sketches about gay culture, and
- 23:57Speaker 3: I'm not mad about that. Like I like the satire
- 24:01Speaker 3: and I especially in the second season, like the Instagaze
- 24:04Speaker 3: episode or the episode where he joins that like church call,
- 24:07Speaker 3: like those are really funny, like insider baseball like jokes
- 24:12Speaker 3: that like you never would find everywhere anywhere, And I
- 24:16Speaker 3: think that's kind of the strength of the show. But
- 24:17Speaker 3: like now that the third season is trying to make
- 24:20Speaker 3: like a narrative like happen more and more, it's just
- 24:23Speaker 3: like not really, Yeah, I feel the same thing.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Love Molly Shannon though, oh she's perfect always Well. We
- 24:31Speaker 1: have a very exciting guest today, Bobby Finger from who
- 24:34Speaker 1: Weekly is here to talk about the Golden.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Girls podcasting royalty honestly.
- 24:40Speaker 1: So, I'm gonna cut myself a slice of cheesecake and
- 24:44Speaker 1: which is a bad idea because dark goes right through
- 24:47Speaker 1: me these days, and we'll.
- 24:49Speaker 6: Be back with Bobby God, I want chick now.
- 25:10Speaker 3: I looked up a list of the best Golden Girls
- 25:13Speaker 3: episodes to do like a little sampling, and I wonder
- 25:18Speaker 3: if you might have an idea of what some of
- 25:20Speaker 3: them want it.
- 25:21Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, I can guess. I can guess for sure, Like, okay,
- 25:25Speaker 5: did you watch did you watch Sick and Tired? Yeah,
- 25:29Speaker 5: the one where Dorothy has chronic fatigue syndrome? No, oh
- 25:33Speaker 5: my god, it's a two parter. Or it's amazing, it's
- 25:36Speaker 5: really meap, Yeah, it's a two parter. Are about you know,
- 25:39Speaker 5: like the creator, Susan Harris, had chronic fatigue syndrome and
- 25:43Speaker 5: she wanted to write it into the show. So Dorothy
- 25:44Speaker 5: gets chronic fatigue servent. It's about like doctors not believing women,
- 25:48Speaker 5: and she's going from place to place until someone finally says,
- 25:51Speaker 5: like your feelings are valid, and like your feelings of
- 25:55Speaker 5: sickness are real, and like here's what we can do
- 25:57Speaker 5: to treat you, but it takes forever farning and someone
- 25:59Speaker 5: who believes it's really good, I would say, well, I
- 26:01Speaker 5: don't agree with that, because doctors shouldn't believe whomen our
- 26:04Speaker 5: feelings aren't valid and chroduc contigue syndrome isn't real. It
- 26:07Speaker 5: isn't real. Yeah, it's like more Gallon's It's just not real.
- 26:10Speaker 3: It's like one of many instances in the show with
- 26:12Speaker 3: like gaslighting doctors too, Like that's like I feel like
- 26:15Speaker 3: it's something that like you never get to talk about,
- 26:17Speaker 3: like when like doctors really are just so manipulative and
- 26:23Speaker 3: do not, like you know, take people's opinions, like especially
- 26:26Speaker 3: when like ageism is is involved.
- 26:28Speaker 2: And yeah, I loved I loved watching that throughout the show.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Did you also watch I would guess the episode where
- 26:37Speaker 5: Dorothy's friend who's a tennis player fakes her death. I
- 26:41Speaker 5: wait till death, Till death do us volley, I believe
- 26:44Speaker 5: is what the name of the episode is called.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Not it doesn't quite roll off the tongue.
- 26:49Speaker 5: The episode where Rose is worried that she was given
- 26:53Speaker 5: a blood transfusion with HIV positive blood.
- 26:56Speaker 3: You know, but I am aware of that episode every
- 27:00Speaker 3: one talks about episode that's a good one, and then
- 27:03Speaker 3: what about the the one where one of my favorite
- 27:06Speaker 3: episodes is the one with George Clooney an early appearance
- 27:09Speaker 3: of George Clooney.
- 27:10Speaker 1: In a show.
- 27:11Speaker 5: And it's like two private detectives who have to live
- 27:15Speaker 5: in their house to spy on the jewel thieves who
- 27:18Speaker 5: moved in next door. And it's like some older hunk
- 27:21Speaker 5: and then his young deputy and it's George Clooney and Dorothy.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Are they gat them?
- 27:27Speaker 5: No, No, it's not even glimmer of it. This is
- 27:31Speaker 5: a vibe with George Clooney, but not with the older
- 27:33Speaker 5: guy at all.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Okay, what's with the crime aspect of Golden Girls? Because
- 27:37Speaker 3: I did watch the murder mystery episode where they go
- 27:40Speaker 3: to the hotel.
- 27:42Speaker 5: That's the best episode of the show.
- 27:44Speaker 4: I was, I was hooting and hollering.
- 27:47Speaker 3: I just, you know, as someone who didn't watch Golden
- 27:51Speaker 3: Girls a lot. I and also like I think most
- 27:55Speaker 3: shows today like are not laugh out loud funny. It
- 27:58Speaker 3: just was such a great experience to watch a TV
- 28:00Speaker 3: show where I was like actively laughing the whole time.
- 28:04Speaker 5: It's the show gets I think like a lot of sitcoms,
- 28:08Speaker 5: it gets more absurd as it goes by, and I
- 28:10Speaker 5: think there's a camp of people who don't like it
- 28:14Speaker 5: when it gets a little more absurd in the final seasons,
- 28:16Speaker 5: when they kind of run out of things to do.
- 28:17Speaker 5: So it's like, well, let's give them a murder mystery
- 28:19Speaker 5: episode or something, or like let's have the girls put
- 28:21Speaker 5: on a show for children where they dress up like chickens,
- 28:25Speaker 5: you know, Like it gets weird, but I find it funnier,
- 28:28Speaker 5: Like the show only gets funnier as it goes on,
- 28:30Speaker 5: and it's always funny, Like every episode of the show
- 28:33Speaker 5: is funny.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I think it's funny the idea that they would run
- 28:37Speaker 3: out of things to do, because like the premise is
- 28:40Speaker 3: not baked in with a lot of things to do anyway,
- 28:43Speaker 3: So I feel like that was kind of the whole run.
- 28:46Speaker 3: I was continually shocked by how much I found myself laughing,
- 28:51Speaker 3: Like just throughout watching the show, I was so immediately
- 28:55Speaker 3: attracted to like how dark the humor is, Like it's
- 28:58Speaker 3: really crass for the eighties. I loved, loved, love just
- 29:02Speaker 3: the tone and how everyone talked and made fun of
- 29:05Speaker 3: each other. I got a cosmetic peel yesterday and I
- 29:08Speaker 3: was sitting at home with my cosmetic peel on my face,
- 29:10Speaker 3: just like, but I'm not allowed to move my mouth
- 29:12Speaker 3: because I'm the peel falls awesome.
- 29:13Speaker 2: I'm just sitting there giggling.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Like Bobby for the Virgins. Can you give us like
- 29:20Speaker 3: a quick like TLDR of what the Golden Girls is
- 29:24Speaker 3: and who the Golden Girls are?
- 29:27Speaker 5: Yes? So, if you've never watched The Golden Girls, it's
- 29:30Speaker 5: a sitcom that ran for seven seasons about four women
- 29:36Speaker 5: in Miami, and the setup is there's the woman who
- 29:40Speaker 5: owns the house. Her name is Blanche Debeaux. She's a
- 29:43Speaker 5: Southern bell and kind of over the span of the
- 29:46Speaker 5: show learns to understand that her sort of loving the
- 29:50Speaker 5: old South and the Antebellum South is a problem. Like
- 29:53Speaker 5: there's a whole episode that deals with that, which is
- 29:54Speaker 5: really funny. And she when her husband dies, she decides
- 30:00Speaker 5: to rent out the rooms to people, and those people
- 30:04Speaker 5: include Dorothy Zbornak, who's a Brooklyn transplant who's like a
- 30:09Speaker 5: substitute teacher. Also, I mean that would be like the
- 30:15Speaker 5: reboot of the show. There's so they're like infinite ways
- 30:17Speaker 5: to reboot the show. Be amazing. She comes to Miami
- 30:20Speaker 5: after her husband dumps her, who's a recurring character in
- 30:23Speaker 5: the show, after like thirty eight years of marriage. She
- 30:26Speaker 5: brings her mom, Sophia Petrillo, who the show introduces as
- 30:30Speaker 5: like extremely crass and rude and mean because she just
- 30:34Speaker 5: had a stroke, so it like messed with her brain.
- 30:37Speaker 5: It like it disabled the part of her brain that
- 30:40Speaker 5: works on self control. So that's like very explicit in
- 30:44Speaker 5: the first few episodes of the show. And then they
- 30:45Speaker 5: just are like, no, let's just make her a bitch,
- 30:47Speaker 5: like it's fine, Like she's just an asshole, like they
- 30:50Speaker 5: take the stroke away. But then the other person is
- 30:53Speaker 5: Rose Nyland, who is just a lovable idiot with a
- 30:58Speaker 5: heart of gold, who you know, never finished high school,
- 31:01Speaker 5: does not know much about anything and is just like
- 31:04Speaker 5: sort of charmingly ignorant. And she lives with them too,
- 31:08Speaker 5: and she is also a widow. But I don't know,
- 31:11Speaker 5: it's just their comings and goings in this house that
- 31:14Speaker 5: they live in because they can't afford to live anywhere
- 31:16Speaker 5: else at least the three roommates to Blanche is like
- 31:20Speaker 5: has a little more money and is just like you
- 31:22Speaker 5: find out later in the series, the only reason she
- 31:25Speaker 5: has them live with her is because she no longer
- 31:27Speaker 5: has to pay the mortgage anymore. It's not like she's
- 31:29Speaker 5: desperate for cash. She just like doesn't want to have
- 31:31Speaker 5: to pay the mortgage. So that's what the show's about.
- 31:34Speaker 5: And they live in Miami and they have fun and
- 31:36Speaker 5: they fuck and they deal with I don't know, controversial subjects,
- 31:41Speaker 5: especially for the time, Like, like I said, HIV is
- 31:44Speaker 5: a topic she's constantly dealing with, Like Blanches her conflicted
- 31:51Speaker 5: feelings about her gay brother who she cannot accept. I
- 31:54Speaker 5: don't know.
- 31:54Speaker 3: That's the show solches. So Blanche is a landlord, Yeah,
- 31:58Speaker 3: landlord exactly.
- 32:00Speaker 5: Hate we have.
- 32:01Speaker 3: How much rent do you think the girls are paying Blanche?
- 32:06Speaker 5: I bet for the time. I bet they're paying her
- 32:08Speaker 5: like five hundred dollars a.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Month of them maybe less, honestly.
- 32:12Speaker 5: Maybe less. Yeah, probably no more than that. But like
- 32:15Speaker 5: the they're weird financial dynamics of the show. I think,
- 32:18Speaker 5: like there are in every sitcom where it's sort of
- 32:20Speaker 5: like I don't really understand like money here, but they
- 32:23Speaker 5: do kind of like how does money exist in this world?
- 32:26Speaker 5: But they do kind of go out of their way
- 32:28Speaker 5: to show that, Like these women are in a sense
- 32:31Speaker 5: living paycheck to paycheck, because that's another that's sometimes they're
- 32:35Speaker 5: like very special episode or they're like topical episode. It's
- 32:38Speaker 5: about how they have to work. They're they're quote unquote
- 32:42Speaker 5: retirement age at least for women of that generation. Like
- 32:44Speaker 5: you would expect that women of that generation at that age,
- 32:47Speaker 5: especially like white women from like relatively middle class, you know,
- 32:52Speaker 5: livelihoods preceding this moment, would be more comfortable, and they're not.
- 32:56Speaker 5: And that's kind of this recurring thing where it's like
- 32:59Speaker 5: I can't believe that we have to work and that
- 33:02Speaker 5: if I lose my job, I may have to be
- 33:05Speaker 5: I'm like, you know, I might have to be homeless,
- 33:08Speaker 5: you know, like I'm like housing insecure as a sixty
- 33:11Speaker 5: five year old woman. So but also they play that
- 33:15Speaker 5: for laughs too sometimes when it's like Blanche as the
- 33:17Speaker 5: evil landlord who like raises their rent without letting them
- 33:20Speaker 5: know in advance.
- 33:20Speaker 3: You know, I loved when it was used for laughs.
- 33:22Speaker 3: To be honest, I think I was continually like I
- 33:26Speaker 3: was continually surprised by like how there was all this
- 33:30Speaker 3: kind of like latent like you know, working class kind
- 33:34Speaker 3: of like commentary or just like just that that just
- 33:37Speaker 3: as you said, like the conceit and like the natural
- 33:39Speaker 3: order of their lives, just invoke conversations about just justice,
- 33:43Speaker 3: justice for like women of a certain age.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Not to not to start with the most basic question,
- 33:47Speaker 2: but Bobby, which one? Which one are you? Which Golden
- 33:50Speaker 2: Girl are you?
- 33:51Speaker 5: Which one am I? I'm probably I'm more of a
- 33:56Speaker 5: I'd love to see myself as a Dorothy and I'd
- 33:59Speaker 5: love to see myself but like the confidence of Dorothy
- 34:02Speaker 5: and Sophia and even Blanche. But I think I'm more
- 34:06Speaker 5: of like a Dorothy Rose hybrid, veering Rosey Rose hybrid.
- 34:12Speaker 5: But I think but that's also like I think that's
- 34:14Speaker 5: the fun of that's it's the fun of you know,
- 34:16Speaker 5: sex and the city too. It's like the fun of
- 34:18Speaker 5: all these sitcoms. It's like which one are you? And
- 34:20Speaker 5: it's like which one do you aspire to be? And
- 34:23Speaker 5: then which one is? It always like sort of like
- 34:25Speaker 5: a route awakening to realize that you are. But I
- 34:27Speaker 5: think in the Golden Girls case, they're all pretty great,
- 34:30Speaker 5: like when you realize, like, oh, I wish I were
- 34:34Speaker 5: as much fun as Blanche. I wish I was having
- 34:35Speaker 5: I was having as much sex as Blanche, Like I
- 34:37Speaker 5: wish I could speak my mind the way that Sophia does. Like,
- 34:40Speaker 5: they all have their positive attributes that are like pretty
- 34:43Speaker 5: admirable and aspirational. So I'm not that upset about being
- 34:47Speaker 5: a Dorothy Rose hybrid leaning Rose.
- 34:49Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really about what what do your friends think
- 34:51Speaker 3: you are?
- 34:52Speaker 2: That's what it's about.
- 34:53Speaker 4: Yeah, well, what who do you think Fran and I are?
- 34:57Speaker 5: Oh my god, I'm not. I'm not. I'm not gonna
- 35:00Speaker 5: I'm not even gonna say. Okay, I know that is
- 35:02Speaker 5: the disaster. That's okay.
- 35:04Speaker 3: A better question to speak to speak in the vernacular
- 35:06Speaker 3: of your show, can you rank the Golden Girls from
- 35:10Speaker 3: who to them? And I don't know if you've done
- 35:11Speaker 3: this before on New Weekly. I'm sure someone's out who
- 35:15Speaker 3: we haven't.
- 35:17Speaker 5: I would say, from who to them, it probably goes
- 35:22Speaker 5: Sophia Blanche Dorothy Rose. I think that, like, and maybe
- 35:29Speaker 5: that would have been different in nineteen eighty nine or
- 35:31Speaker 5: nineteen ninety one or whatever. But I think society is
- 35:34Speaker 5: just and has been so obsessed with Betty White. Yeah, like,
- 35:37Speaker 5: I think I think her death and the response to
- 35:39Speaker 5: her death was proof of that. And it's just like people,
- 35:42Speaker 5: if you don't know Golden Girls. You know Betty White's
- 35:45Speaker 5: character on Golden Girls, which is sort of an idiot,
- 35:48Speaker 5: like a lovable idiot. And I think she's top of
- 35:51Speaker 5: the list, even though she's really not. She's not my
- 35:54Speaker 5: favorite character. Blanche is my favorite, Dorothy's a close second,
- 35:58Speaker 5: and I think Roses third. Rose is like a solid
- 36:00Speaker 5: third place.
- 36:01Speaker 3: I don't know watching it, though, I think Rose has
- 36:04Speaker 3: the best jokes she heard. Her lines were definitely the
- 36:08Speaker 3: ones where I laughed the most. It was either her
- 36:12Speaker 3: or Blanche that really had me giggling. Yeah, same kind of.
- 36:17Speaker 3: I kind of could. I kind of could leave Dorothy.
- 36:20Speaker 3: I mean, no tea, but I mean she's like the
- 36:23Speaker 3: whole like dead pan thing is.
- 36:25Speaker 5: It's a little it's a vibe. If you don't connect
- 36:28Speaker 5: with it, it's like it can be grading.
- 36:30Speaker 3: I kind of understood her immediately, Like I think I
- 36:33Speaker 3: felt like I was like, oh, I'm I felt like
- 36:36Speaker 3: I can be a Dorothy sometimes because a lot of
- 36:38Speaker 3: times I'm the one that's like, let me come in
- 36:40Speaker 3: with a plan, let me break it down for everyone else,
- 36:43Speaker 3: Like I'm the queen mother. Like what I say goes,
- 36:46Speaker 3: But I'm definitely obviously not. I think Rose will tell
- 36:50Speaker 3: you that I'm I'm Rose. You I think you are,
- 36:55Speaker 3: and we should all say now in this very moment,
- 36:57Speaker 3: that Rose is Sophia obviously, and there's no other person
- 37:02Speaker 3: you could be.
- 37:02Speaker 2: Oh, I think do you disagree? Expression?
- 37:07Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I was.
- 37:09Speaker 3: I was about to say that I'm definitely the Sophia
- 37:12Speaker 3: of this podcast of the world. Literally, like every everything
- 37:16Speaker 3: if you in the show, like every single joke sop
- 37:19Speaker 3: he has, it's just like she walks and she's like,
- 37:20Speaker 3: you're all idiots?
- 37:21Speaker 2: Why aren't ident? Yes, you know what I mean.
- 37:24Speaker 3: Either she's calling everyone dumb, or she's calling Blanche hole,
- 37:27Speaker 3: or she's there was so much slugsharee.
- 37:29Speaker 4: Or she's talking about.
- 37:30Speaker 3: How she wants to die yeah, the floodshaing.
- 37:34Speaker 5: Yeah, the sledgshaming of the show is like one of
- 37:37Speaker 5: the biggest hurdles to get over watching it now because
- 37:39Speaker 5: I didn't watch it growing up. I didn't watch it
- 37:41Speaker 5: until I was like seventeen eighteen, and I had put off.
- 37:45Speaker 5: I'd put it off for a long time because I
- 37:46Speaker 5: knew people liked it and I knew it was on reruns.
- 37:48Speaker 5: But I think that's like like when I'm like trying
- 37:50Speaker 5: to figure out my own sexuality and like feeling very
- 37:53Speaker 5: uncomfortable about like my own identity. I was trying to
- 37:56Speaker 5: push away things that I think were coded queer coded.
- 37:59Speaker 5: It's been gave like for young white men, like a
- 38:03Speaker 5: young white man loves golden girl, a young gay white
- 38:05Speaker 5: man loves golden girls, like like join the club. But
- 38:07Speaker 5: there's like millions of clubs for this. So I was like,
- 38:09Speaker 5: I don't know, I'm like resisting this show, and so
- 38:12Speaker 5: once I fell into it, I was just like very surprised.
- 38:15Speaker 5: I was kind of having the same reaction both of
- 38:17Speaker 5: you did watching them. I was like, Oh, this is
- 38:19Speaker 5: just really really good. It's really funny and it's making
- 38:22Speaker 5: me laugh. But the slutshamy stuff is always the first
- 38:25Speaker 5: thing you notice because it's like, well it's such a
- 38:27Speaker 5: weird yeah, because it like it's sex positive posits is
- 38:32Speaker 5: exactly it posits itself as being very sex positive and
- 38:35Speaker 5: showing these older women having like very fulfilling sex lives.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Even Sophia. I watched the episode where she and Blanche
- 38:41Speaker 3: are dating the same guy. Oh yes, but even then
- 38:47Speaker 3: they're like so sex positive, and yet like every line
- 38:50Speaker 3: about Blanche is that she's poor Yeah, it's like it's
- 38:54Speaker 3: like they're easy word to use, like slut over and over,
- 38:56Speaker 3: and it's part of the sex positivity to me, Like
- 38:59Speaker 3: I didn't even see it slutshaming when I was watching
- 39:01Speaker 3: it because I was like, well, this is the world,
- 39:03Speaker 3: and so the sex positivity begets the slut shaming right,
- 39:07Speaker 3: Like it was the foil to like help us understand
- 39:10Speaker 3: how sexually active these women were. And I think that
- 39:12Speaker 3: that was just like so radical, Like how often, if ever,
- 39:16Speaker 3: do we get to see like the sex lives of
- 39:19Speaker 3: like women in their you know, sixties, seventies.
- 39:21Speaker 7: Eighties, sex lives of college drugs, you know, on that.
- 39:45Speaker 3: Note, just in terms of like, you know, how these
- 39:48Speaker 3: women are like avatars for gay men, for gay white
- 39:50Speaker 3: men specifically. Like that's just something that is part of
- 39:54Speaker 3: why Golden Girls has continues to have so much relevance today,
- 39:58Speaker 3: Like it belongs to this generation of shows like like
- 40:02Speaker 3: Designing Women or like Dynasty or you know other other
- 40:06Speaker 3: kind of like these like marquee sitcoms and TV shows
- 40:09Speaker 3: that had all these uh fabulous or extravagant or sassy
- 40:14Speaker 3: you know, older white women that you could canvass yourself
- 40:18Speaker 3: on and see yourself in because there were no gay characters.
- 40:23Speaker 5: You know, you're right, and they had I don't know
- 40:25Speaker 5: if you watched the pilot, they had a gay character
- 40:27Speaker 5: in the pilot episode of the show. It's so strange,
- 40:30Speaker 5: like he was there living chef. Oh my god, they
- 40:35Speaker 5: had a live in chef chef they had well they well,
- 40:39Speaker 5: that's like they have to change it after the first one, right,
- 40:41Speaker 5: Like the whole thing is like it doesn't make any
- 40:43Speaker 5: sense with their financial situation. God, what was his name.
- 40:46Speaker 1: It's someone said, get the fag off the TV. I'm
- 40:49Speaker 1: not watching that.
- 40:49Speaker 4: He was.
- 40:50Speaker 5: He was their out gay chef named Coco, and he
- 40:54Speaker 5: like basically does they basically I guess like meshed his
- 40:57Speaker 5: humor with Sophia, Like he's sort of like always having
- 41:00Speaker 5: the quips. He's always the one who's just like observing
- 41:02Speaker 5: them and like calling them ridiculous. But yeah, he's only
- 41:05Speaker 5: in one episode and then they cut him out. But
- 41:06Speaker 5: the show is like still incorporates gay people pretty frequently.
- 41:09Speaker 5: One of my favorite episodes is also about Dorothy's college
- 41:13Speaker 5: friend coming to stay with her.
- 41:14Speaker 4: I watched that last night.
- 41:15Speaker 5: Yeah, she's a lesbian and like you think that it's
- 41:17Speaker 5: her dead husband, but really it's her dead partner who
- 41:19Speaker 5: was a woman, and she falls in love with Rose.
- 41:22Speaker 5: And the greatest joke of that episode, which is like,
- 41:25Speaker 5: there are some there are just some lines where I'm
- 41:27Speaker 5: just like, I can't believe this was on television in
- 41:28Speaker 5: like nineteen eighty eight. But like when Blanche finds out
- 41:32Speaker 5: that the friend is a lesbian, she's outraged, but it's
- 41:36Speaker 5: not because she's homophobic. She's outraged that the lesbian is
- 41:39Speaker 5: attracted to Rose and not her. So it's so funny.
- 41:43Speaker 5: She's like, I was believe it.
- 41:45Speaker 3: I was losing my mind at that. It was so funny.
- 41:47Speaker 3: I like rewound it to watch three times. I maybe actually,
- 41:50Speaker 3: after watching so many Golden Girls episodes last night, I
- 41:53Speaker 3: might be a little Golden Girls pilled.
- 41:55Speaker 5: I think this might be a new a new journey
- 41:57Speaker 5: for Okay, so glad I could do that.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I'm starting to feel that way.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Well, And let me tell you, similar to you, Bobby,
- 42:02Speaker 3: like I had put off watching it because I was
- 42:04Speaker 3: just like, I think, when I watch it, it will
- 42:06Speaker 3: take over my life and personality and maybe like I'm
- 42:10Speaker 3: not in like a space for that, you know. I
- 42:13Speaker 3: feel like I continually like once a year, once every
- 42:15Speaker 3: other year, like I get the flu and then I'm like, oh,
- 42:18Speaker 3: let me watch this show that I've like put off forever.
- 42:20Speaker 3: And then all of a sudden, like I've watched twenty
- 42:22Speaker 3: six seasons of like Real Housewives or whatever and like
- 42:26Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, I didn't actually want that to happen.
- 42:28Speaker 3: So you know, maybe I'm waiting for the flu again
- 42:30Speaker 3: to like actually go through the process of watching every
- 42:32Speaker 3: single episode. But I know that there will be a
- 42:35Speaker 3: period in my life where I do watch every single
- 42:37Speaker 3: episode because it is that good.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I'm going to be on that journey.
- 42:43Speaker 3: And I'm honestly shocked that I like, even though I
- 42:47Speaker 3: have watched a little bit of Golden Girls before, I think,
- 42:50Speaker 3: especially because of the Florida of it all, it is
- 42:53Speaker 3: shocking that I have never watched it because I famously
- 42:56Speaker 3: am from Florida.
- 42:57Speaker 4: I'm from Boca Ratone.
- 42:58Speaker 3: So like this is my work used to like we
- 43:02Speaker 3: used to where I grew up. We call it God's
- 43:04Speaker 3: Waiting Room because it's like where old people go to
- 43:06Speaker 3: die and every like even just the like the production design,
- 43:13Speaker 3: it's like that's what everyone's houses look like down there.
- 43:16Speaker 3: They're all sort of like pastel and like wicker furniture
- 43:20Speaker 3: and you know, like palm trees through the windows. It
- 43:23Speaker 3: was like a little triggering, but in kind of a
- 43:26Speaker 3: good way. And I love that they live in Miami.
- 43:29Speaker 3: I it did make me think about Iggy Azalea sixteen
- 43:33Speaker 3: in the middle of Miami, but I guess it would
- 43:35Speaker 3: be sixty one in the middle.
- 43:36Speaker 4: Of my Yeah, this is your old girls, this is.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Your community, your culture.
- 43:41Speaker 3: Did you growing up like or do you have any
- 43:43Speaker 3: like Boca memories of like retirees or like funny experiences
- 43:47Speaker 3: with like retirees in Florida or things that you remember
- 43:50Speaker 3: about I don't know. I've never been like surrounded by
- 43:54Speaker 3: retirees or like.
- 43:55Speaker 5: In a yem either.
- 43:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 3: I mean, well, like my my, my like street, growing up,
- 44:04Speaker 3: like there were no other children who lived in our neighborhood.
- 44:07Speaker 4: This is all It was all old people.
- 44:10Speaker 3: I think I spent a lot of my adolescents avoiding
- 44:14Speaker 3: watching old people eat food at restaurants. You, honestly, Bobby,
- 44:20Speaker 3: your experience. I'm really discovering so much about you right now.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Rose.
- 44:23Speaker 3: The fact that you grew up with no children says
- 44:26Speaker 3: so much about you and who you are today. That
- 44:31Speaker 3: is an incredible thing we've onearthed and you just see
- 44:35Speaker 3: like one day, like someone's house being packed up and
- 44:38Speaker 3: you're like, oh, I guess they die. They're like, you know,
- 44:41Speaker 3: gotta go hit that estate sale. Oh, Bobby, do you
- 44:45Speaker 3: have any other like favorite episodes or like things that
- 44:48Speaker 3: like what were when you first watched the show? Like
- 44:51Speaker 3: what were the things that you talked on about some
- 44:53Speaker 3: of them, but what were the things that you like
- 44:54Speaker 3: drew out of the show or the things that you
- 44:55Speaker 3: really loved about it.
- 44:58Speaker 5: I just couldn't believe how funny was It's that was
- 45:01Speaker 5: the main thing that surprised me. I was like, Oh,
- 45:04Speaker 5: this is just jokes. It's just one liners. It's jokes
- 45:08Speaker 5: left and right. It's jokes that like I can quote
- 45:11Speaker 5: with my sister all the time, Like we have our
- 45:13Speaker 5: own little Golden Girls language. That drives the rest of
- 45:16Speaker 5: my family crazy because like we can speak exclusively in
- 45:18Speaker 5: Golden Girls lines, and it's funny to me because they're
- 45:20Speaker 5: just like universal and hilarious. But I think it felt
- 45:24Speaker 5: so contemporary in a way, like there was something again.
- 45:27Speaker 5: I was just surprised at every turn that, like I
- 45:30Speaker 5: was connecting with this thing. But also it made me
- 45:32Speaker 5: really that like, oh, of course I love I love
- 45:35Speaker 5: like media content, movies, books about older people like I didn't.
- 45:40Speaker 5: I didn't grow up in boke a ratone like surrounded
- 45:43Speaker 5: by retirees crossing the street all day, but like I
- 45:46Speaker 5: definitely grew up liking movies at least about older people,
- 45:51Speaker 5: like I love a you know, new divorce, like finding
- 45:55Speaker 5: a new life, like you know, like I grew up
- 45:58Speaker 5: liking under the Tuscan Sun and like how Stella got
- 46:01Speaker 5: her group that sort of shit, Like I always love
- 46:04Speaker 5: that stuff, and like I've never seen under the Tuscan sue,
- 46:07Speaker 5: Oh my god, under the set and then even better
- 46:10Speaker 5: like Waiting to Exhale, which is like four women going
- 46:12Speaker 5: through it, you know, like yeah, it's I loved that
- 46:15Speaker 5: stuff it and it watching Golden Girls. I just I
- 46:18Speaker 5: really connect with stories about people who and it's just
- 46:23Speaker 5: I think it's just by like it's incidental. I don't
- 46:27Speaker 5: know why it happens, but it's just like a factor
- 46:29Speaker 5: of like how things work in movies and TV, because
- 46:32Speaker 5: there are always stories about women, but it's like older
- 46:35Speaker 5: people like starting a new life or like realizing that
- 46:38Speaker 5: you can always change your mind and you can be
- 46:40Speaker 5: whoever you want to be at any point in your life.
- 46:42Speaker 5: Like I'm really drawn to that story, Like there's no
- 46:45Speaker 5: age limit for changing your mind or doing something crazy, Like.
- 46:49Speaker 3: There really is something about four women, But what is it?
- 46:54Speaker 7: What is it?
- 46:54Speaker 3: Because I don't think there would be a Sex in
- 46:57Speaker 3: the City without Golden Girls, no kind of And there
- 47:00Speaker 3: wouldn't be girls without sex and the City without Golden Girls,
- 47:03Speaker 3: and then there wouldn't be an end just like that,
- 47:06Speaker 3: although that's not for women. The Sex and the City
- 47:10Speaker 3: girls and the Golden Girls have like basically fit every
- 47:13Speaker 3: almost every archetype, like obviously, like you know Rose is Charlotte,
- 47:18Speaker 3: and Sophia is Miranda, and Blanche is Samantha. I think
- 47:24Speaker 3: Dorothy and Carrie are not Dorothy. No, they're not, They're
- 47:28Speaker 3: not really they're not really a match actually, Like I
- 47:30Speaker 3: think that's the one that doesn't really fit the archetype.
- 47:32Speaker 2: But I was gonna say, on the retiree.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Dorothy is Stanford.
- 47:36Speaker 5: Dorothy is Stanford, Oh my god.
- 47:40Speaker 3: On the retiree genre, because it is a genre. It's complicated.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Have we ever seen it's complicated? Yer? My favorite Nancy
- 47:48Speaker 3: Meyers film I love is that the one with no
- 47:51Speaker 3: that's something, that Something's okay. They all kind of blend
- 47:55Speaker 3: together a lot. But I love stories about women of
- 47:58Speaker 3: a certain age going especially I mean with Nancy Meers.
- 48:02Speaker 3: It's like wealthy women with nice kitchens in a moment
- 48:05Speaker 3: of emotional crisis.
- 48:06Speaker 2: It's just the best. It's the it's.
- 48:08Speaker 5: They can really go through it, you know, like they
- 48:10Speaker 5: can go through it extravagantly, like that.
- 48:12Speaker 3: They don't have to worry about like the worldly issues exactly.
- 48:15Speaker 5: It's even more of a fantasy. It's great.
- 48:17Speaker 3: Do any of y'all watch Grayson, Frankie or or like,
- 48:21Speaker 3: are we excited for like eighty for Brady or whatever
- 48:24Speaker 3: that is happening. I can't believe you thought that I
- 48:26Speaker 3: would be excited about Haiti for Brady, Bobby's it's Bob.
- 48:31Speaker 5: I'm excited Bobby. I'm excited for Adie, for Brady, I'm
- 48:33Speaker 5: excited for eighty Brady.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Tell me why come?
- 48:35Speaker 3: I also I also hated book Club. I did Love
- 48:40Speaker 3: was one of the worst movies I've ever seen that
- 48:42Speaker 3: I almost walked out.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Actually I may have walked out of it.
- 48:45Speaker 5: You walked out of book Club? You missed that Jane
- 48:49Speaker 5: Conda finally gets to kiss what's his name like on
- 48:52Speaker 5: the roof of her hotel.
- 48:53Speaker 3: The ending is, oh, no, I actually I watched the
- 48:56Speaker 3: whole thing. It was there's a different movie that I
- 48:57Speaker 3: walked up. You made a mistake. It's not a movie
- 49:00Speaker 3: to see in theaters. It's a movie to watch on
- 49:02Speaker 3: a plane, which is how I watched it. And it
- 49:04Speaker 3: was perfectly for the plane, perfect exactly.
- 49:07Speaker 5: And I and friend. To answer your question why I'm
- 49:10Speaker 5: gonna like eighty forbid year, why I'm in ad here, Brady,
- 49:12Speaker 5: it's the simple answer, which Rose is gonna have a
- 49:15Speaker 5: problem with. But it's because I liked book Club. I
- 49:18Speaker 5: was like, Oh, they found out that this format works.
- 49:20Speaker 5: They're just doing it again, only they're working in like
- 49:23Speaker 5: they replaced Diane Keaton with Sally Field and they replaced
- 49:27Speaker 5: I guess who else is in book Club? Read a Moreno? Yeah,
- 49:31Speaker 5: So it's like, wow, great, let's just do it again.
- 49:34Speaker 4: I'm just is Diane Keaton done?
- 49:35Speaker 2: Now?
- 49:36Speaker 4: Has she been canceled?
- 49:37Speaker 3: Did you see that movie where the young woman turned
- 49:39Speaker 3: into Diane Keaton?
- 49:41Speaker 5: Mac and rita?
- 49:42Speaker 2: Wait?
- 49:43Speaker 5: No, friend keeps saying, my friend keep saying it's actually good,
- 49:46Speaker 5: And I'm like, there's no way in hell it's actually good.
- 49:49Speaker 4: There's no way, there's.
- 49:50Speaker 3: No possible way that she like, what does she like
- 49:53Speaker 3: go into a tanning booth and then she comes out
- 49:55Speaker 3: as Diane King. Also, whenever somebody's review is it's actually good,
- 50:00Speaker 3: like that's an immediate flabum. Yeah, that actually is like hmmm,
- 50:04Speaker 3: oh actually it's in spite of something, got it exactly.
- 50:08Speaker 3: But I'm just honestly, we should be replacing Rita Morena.
- 50:11Speaker 3: We should be, sorry, replacing Diane Keaton with Riada Moreno
- 50:15Speaker 3: at every turn in every movie. I'm also so we
- 50:17Speaker 3: should we should have Rita Moreno film all of Diane
- 50:21Speaker 3: Keaton's Annie Hall. Yes, yes, we should actually know we can't.
- 50:23Speaker 3: We can't watch Annie Hall Allen. No, first first wive, Honey,
- 50:28Speaker 3: We're we're yes, no, no, no, I actually think you're
- 50:30Speaker 3: onto something. We're re recording all of Diane Keaton's films
- 50:33Speaker 3: with Rita Moreno and it's going to be like Parent's
- 50:36Speaker 3: Rita's version, okay version.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Yes, we're doing the back catalog.
- 50:39Speaker 4: Take that scooter by.
- 50:41Speaker 5: Yes, yeah, I mean, I mean she's an egod, she
- 50:44Speaker 5: can handle it. She can get all of the nuances
- 50:46Speaker 5: of every performance and like match everything perfectly, so she
- 50:50Speaker 5: can just like cover the frame.
- 50:52Speaker 3: Jane Fonda is also one of my favorite celebrities of
- 50:54Speaker 3: all time, point blank period. Like she is like a
- 50:58Speaker 3: much like actually like someone like be Arthur who just
- 51:02Speaker 3: a lifetime of consistent activism, you know, like a lifetime
- 51:06Speaker 3: of like standing for something and like never shying away
- 51:10Speaker 3: from that, never never being deterred by celebrity or all
- 51:14Speaker 3: that stuff.
- 51:15Speaker 5: No, it's it's crazy that you Like, it's hard to
- 51:19Speaker 5: think of an equivalent to her with someone who's like
- 51:22Speaker 5: spanned generations of being kind of on the right side
- 51:24Speaker 5: of public opinion and like loudly vocally sort of influentially
- 51:29Speaker 5: on the right side of public opinion even when it
- 51:32Speaker 5: kind of almost wrecked her career multiple times. I mean,
- 51:34Speaker 5: and she was just like, no, it did.
- 51:36Speaker 1: The only other person I can think of is Lady Gaga.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Shut up. She's never had a wrong opinion, oh my gods.
- 51:44Speaker 4: Never.
- 51:45Speaker 3: I mean, she's had some wrong creative decisions, but you know,
- 51:49Speaker 3: she's been on the right side of history, just maybe
- 51:52Speaker 3: not the right side.
- 51:52Speaker 5: Of her history.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Bobby, have you ever seen did you did you ever
- 51:56Speaker 3: watch Malcolm in the Middle.
- 51:59Speaker 5: I never No, for some reason, that never. That never
- 52:03Speaker 5: hit with me.
- 52:04Speaker 3: So Chloris Leachman and Betty White have like amazing scenes together,
- 52:10Speaker 3: like throughout this like throughout the show. Like Betty White
- 52:13Speaker 3: is like a character, a recurring character and a lot
- 52:15Speaker 3: of the seasons of the show. And it's like and
- 52:18Speaker 3: she is her like she she's a she. I would
- 52:21Speaker 3: say she doesn't play Rose. I think she almost plays
- 52:24Speaker 3: Dorothy More because she's kind of like but she has
- 52:27Speaker 3: like she's like, I'm an alluringly sweet old lady, but
- 52:31Speaker 3: like beneath, she's like rotten to the core and she's
- 52:33Speaker 3: evil and like and like, well, that's kind of what
- 52:36Speaker 3: her type evolved, yeah into. That's so much of what
- 52:39Speaker 3: she did, like when she played herself on Ugly Betty,
- 52:42Speaker 3: or when she was in wasn't she in the Proposal?
- 52:45Speaker 5: The Proposal?
- 52:46Speaker 3: Was like yeah, yeah, she was like she's like sweet
- 52:49Speaker 3: old lady who's secretly nasty.
- 52:51Speaker 5: She says fuck in the Proposal. I think it's like
- 52:54Speaker 5: it's a PG. Thirteen movie where you know, Betty White
- 52:57Speaker 5: says fuck and no one could believe it. I could
- 53:00Speaker 5: believe it.
- 53:02Speaker 3: She was seated but I was seeing it on a plane.
- 53:05Speaker 5: I love being able to tell people like Golden Girls, Virgins,
- 53:09Speaker 5: Golden Girls trivia. But like she was originally Blanche, you know,
- 53:12Speaker 5: like that I didn't know that because she was in
- 53:17Speaker 5: This is not a show. I'm not, like, I don't
- 53:18Speaker 5: have experience with the Mary Tyler Moore show, but I
- 53:20Speaker 5: guess on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, which she was
- 53:22Speaker 5: in before this, she was like the sexy employee at
- 53:26Speaker 5: the office, like the sultry one, the alluring one, and
- 53:30Speaker 5: she was going to play a similar character in Golden Girls.
- 53:32Speaker 5: They were like, she's good at this, We'll let her
- 53:34Speaker 5: do it, and she was like, I want to do
- 53:35Speaker 5: something different, let me be Rose. And then they got rude,
- 53:39Speaker 5: what's her name, Rue McClanahan to be Blanche. But I'm
- 53:42Speaker 5: just like, oh, I guess at the time that kind
- 53:44Speaker 5: of was a twist for her. So like audiences back
- 53:48Speaker 5: when the show premiered were like, Oh, she's not playing
- 53:50Speaker 5: the sexy one. That's so weird, But you two aren't
- 53:53Speaker 5: there yet. The reveal kind of in the middle of
- 53:55Speaker 5: the series is that no one has had more sex
- 53:58Speaker 5: than Rose.
- 54:00Speaker 3: Oh right, now she becomes the anointed slut. I was
- 54:02Speaker 3: reading about that.
- 54:03Speaker 5: She she becomes the anointed slut because they find out
- 54:05Speaker 5: that she had like like one hundred boyfriends in high
- 54:09Speaker 5: school and also that she and her husband had sex
- 54:11Speaker 5: every single night of their marriage until he died, and
- 54:16Speaker 5: Blanche like can't believe it, and it's just like, oh,
- 54:21Speaker 5: I love the reveal that even though she's the sort
- 54:23Speaker 5: of sweet one, she loves to fuck. Yeah, like, that's like.
- 54:27Speaker 3: That she probably in the show and she probably tears
- 54:30Speaker 3: those men apart. Also, one of the episodes I was watching,
- 54:33Speaker 3: she reveals that Hitler was like a teacher at her school.
- 54:38Speaker 5: Oh my god, that's one of that is one of
- 54:40Speaker 5: the weirdest reveals in the first of all, that episode
- 54:44Speaker 5: is so strange where she goes back to school to
- 54:46Speaker 5: get her high school diploma. Yeah yeah, and then you
- 54:48Speaker 5: find out that her like Jim teacher was Hitler and
- 54:51Speaker 5: that Ava Brown was there in saying Olaf, Minnesota, and
- 54:55Speaker 5: you find out that the whole reason the entire town
- 54:56Speaker 5: is dumb is because it was a secret plot by
- 54:59Speaker 5: the Germans make Americans stupid, Like what it's so it's
- 55:03Speaker 5: like so absurd, and then the show's like, anyway, I
- 55:06Speaker 5: was watching.
- 55:07Speaker 3: I really I would love to know what the Golden
- 55:09Speaker 3: Girls writer's room was, Like, I mean, I'm sure it
- 55:12Speaker 3: was like so fun and but also like they really
- 55:15Speaker 3: go there, Like I was. I think I only watched
- 55:17Speaker 3: the first season, like episodes in the first season, but
- 55:19Speaker 3: I was just watching an episode where Sophia makes this
- 55:21Speaker 3: offhanded joke about how she used to work in Mussolini's kitchen, and.
- 55:25Speaker 2: I was like what.
- 55:26Speaker 3: I was like, what, Like it's so funny and so dark,
- 55:30Speaker 3: but like, I don't know, I kind of love it.
- 55:32Speaker 2: I live for stuff like that.
- 55:53Speaker 5: There's a it's like every once in a while there
- 55:54Speaker 5: will just be something really surprising and like something that's
- 55:58Speaker 5: like overtly sexual or like extremely progressive, or just like
- 56:02Speaker 5: kind of a controversial political opinion, like a progressive political
- 56:04Speaker 5: opinion that they put on like network television that you
- 56:08Speaker 5: sort of are surprised to see on like populist entertainment.
- 56:11Speaker 5: But then it's like I think a lot of it
- 56:12Speaker 5: had to do with like who was watching it, Like
- 56:15Speaker 5: older people were watching it. It wasn't on like I
- 56:18Speaker 5: think it was on like Fridays and Saturdays, Like it
- 56:20Speaker 5: had a very weird time slot, so they could get
- 56:23Speaker 5: away with a lot of stuff because like it was
- 56:25Speaker 5: really popular, but it wasn't like mussy TV Thursdays or something.
- 56:29Speaker 5: You know. It was like in a very special, little
- 56:31Speaker 5: more secluded spot, so they could be a little more,
- 56:34Speaker 5: a little racier, I think.
- 56:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:37Speaker 3: And also they weren't afraid to be kind of like sad.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Like I watched the episode where their neighbor dies because
- 56:44Speaker 3: because Rose says that she hopes she drops dead, and
- 56:48Speaker 3: then they realize, like this woman like everyone hates her,
- 56:51Speaker 3: so they have to throw her a funeral, and like
- 56:54Speaker 3: that was so like devastatingly sad to think about, but
- 56:57Speaker 3: it was really funny.
- 56:59Speaker 5: Yeah, they make that whole episode. It's almost like, when
- 57:02Speaker 5: you think about an episode like that, if they made
- 57:04Speaker 5: that in twenty twenty two, you would want to work
- 57:08Speaker 5: in a little bit of a like some sort of
- 57:11Speaker 5: sad backstory about this evil woman who lived next door,
- 57:14Speaker 5: and that episode completely rejects it. It's like, no, she was,
- 57:18Speaker 5: she's a bawful evil woman, and we're glad that she's dead.
- 57:21Speaker 5: End of story. We're done, Like that's it. It's so like,
- 57:24Speaker 5: oh wow, they went there.
- 57:25Speaker 2: It's really new.
- 57:26Speaker 3: It's like really like they just yeah, they're not afraid
- 57:29Speaker 3: to just like be funny about death, Like there I want.
- 57:32Speaker 1: It's true sitcom lone.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 57:34Speaker 3: I watched the episode where Blanche you know, is thinking
- 57:39Speaker 3: about giving her sister a kidney, and how it's like
- 57:43Speaker 3: a very real circumstance and the and the you know,
- 57:46Speaker 3: the climax does become very sincere. But at the end
- 57:48Speaker 3: of the day, she's like, I don't want to give
- 57:50Speaker 3: her my fucking kidney, like I hate her, and it's
- 57:52Speaker 3: like it's like and she can die, Like that's literally
- 57:55Speaker 3: like kind of what it is.
- 57:56Speaker 2: And it's like, I I love that episodes like that.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Honestly, I would say I haven't seen everything, but I
- 58:02Speaker 3: feel like all, if not most of the episodes that
- 58:05Speaker 3: I watched were about mortality in some way, Like death
- 58:09Speaker 3: is this kind of theme that's at a low simmer.
- 58:13Speaker 7: Death is the fifth.
- 58:17Speaker 3: Exactly, No, not no, you know, And I think that
- 58:20Speaker 3: that that was like the joy of the show is
- 58:23Speaker 3: like it revels in death.
- 58:24Speaker 2: It's joyful about death.
- 58:26Speaker 3: It show it shows you how these women live bigger
- 58:30Speaker 3: because death is at the doorstep, or that they have
- 58:33Speaker 3: less at stake, they can be more themselves because you know,
- 58:38Speaker 3: we're all gonna die, and like, I don't know, that's liberatory.
- 58:41Speaker 3: It's just amazing. It was so fun to watch the characters.
- 58:45Speaker 3: It's kind of like nihilistic, Yeah, a little bit exactly.
- 58:47Speaker 5: Yeah, it is got frand you got it. That's exactly
- 58:50Speaker 5: what it is. Like I guess I've never really like
- 58:52Speaker 5: thought about it in those terms exactly, but that's like
- 58:55Speaker 5: such a huge part of why it works. It's like
- 58:57Speaker 5: they know that they're near death even though they're like
- 59:00Speaker 5: they started making the show when they were like fifty five,
- 59:02Speaker 5: so like they were actually like fairly young, but at
- 59:05Speaker 5: the time it was they they were should they should
- 59:07Speaker 5: have been retired, They should have been you know, planning
- 59:09Speaker 5: for their funerals or whatever. The kidney thing reminds me
- 59:13Speaker 5: that kidney story that you picked up on a friend
- 59:16Speaker 5: of mine. His brother had some sort of kidney disease
- 59:21Speaker 5: and I don't know what it was, but needed a
- 59:23Speaker 5: kidney transplant. Like it was desperate, needed a kidney transplant.
- 59:26Speaker 5: And so the process is you like ask like I
- 59:29Speaker 5: don't know if you've seen this, Lena Gomez my mind
- 59:31Speaker 5: in me or whatever, but like you ask as many
- 59:33Speaker 5: people as you can like you you have to, you know,
- 59:36Speaker 5: you know, open up your circle and say like, are
- 59:38Speaker 5: you willing to give me a kidney or at least
- 59:40Speaker 5: get the test? And so he was like, it's my brother.
- 59:44Speaker 5: I love my brother, but like part of me rudely
- 59:47Speaker 5: hopes that I'm not a match because then I have
- 59:49Speaker 5: to have surgery or whatever, Like isn't that a horrible
- 59:52Speaker 5: feeling to have? And I was like, oh, I'd never
- 59:54Speaker 5: considered that, but like even if it is someone you love,
- 59:57Speaker 5: like you have to go under the knife to take
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: a piece of you out and give it to a person,
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: Like that's like rough. And I just never hear would
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: give a kidney to before? Who would I get?
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: Would you get? Would you give Rita Aura a kidney
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: if she needed one?
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: I feel like the thing is and I that's kind
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: of what my friend was saying, like the moment you're
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: a match, you have to like I somehow, if I
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: somehow end up on like the male gets mixed up,
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: that's like a movie or something like if I take
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: a if I take a test and the hospital finds
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: out that I'm a match for a Rita Aura or
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: like Jesse j or something, and they're just like Bobby
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: jesse J like needs a kidney. I'd be like, well, fuck,
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: how do you say no? How do you say no
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: to that? Like jesse J is getting my kidney?
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: I like you can't easily say no. I think as
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: jesse J has said.
- 1:00:45Speaker 5: No, no no no no no no no no no no.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: But like I really do think that you just send
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: you that video out. Oh my god, if you get
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: asked like, don't you kind of have to like because
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: you don't speak for yourself.
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Man, not me, I'd be like, good, diva.
- 1:01:01Speaker 5: Guilt guilt works on me, so like not on Rose
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: and I guilt is guilt is you know, my kryptonite,
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: And it's like, oh god, I gotta.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: Give just no I'm I'm I'm Jewish. If it's not
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: my mother, I'm like, good luck with that.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: Yeah, there are very few people that I would give
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: a kidney too. But also my kidneys are probably rotted,
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: like you don't want my kidneys? Like, no, man, I
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: would give you a kidney, fran I would give I mean,
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: I was gonna say I would give you a kidney,
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: But I don't think you would ever want a kidney.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: I think you'd be like I be like.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: No, I'd like I'm dying.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, You're like no, thanks, okay.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: I'd feel like i'd be like'ally like thanks, you're in.
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: You had a great run of it or whatever. Yeah,
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: I feel I feel like rotten inside. Although like like honestly,
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: who gives a fuck about crystiality, Like that's not even
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: a controversial opinion, but like, this was one of the
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: first celebrity deaths in a long time where I was
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: just like, I cannot stop thinking about this funny tweet,
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: like I'm incapable of mourning this woman. I'm incapable of
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: mourning this one.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: I know level I Also, it felt compounded for me
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: because a couple of days ago, I had I tweeted
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: that Kirsty Ali was one celebrity who I would not
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: eat if I was a cannibal because that tastes bad
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: and so and so last night, like someone with like
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: one hundred thousand followers quote tweeted it and was like,
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: what did you know? And now people are like in
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: my mention saying that I killed Kirsty Well and cheering
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: is next.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: I just I just.
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: What I stand by what I said.
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: I had actually I forgot.
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: About the the Stephen Hawking tweet I loved, but I
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: just couldn't stop thinking about how she was like supporting
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Trump is like, you know, I'm the most marginalized because
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: I support Trump and like and also she was like
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: cheering on the insurrection or whatever. Wait, yeah she was
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: a bad Yeah, Bobby, this is this is a who
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: n muquestion? What is the deal between like Kirsten Johnson
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: and Kirsty Ali and why they look exactly the same?
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: Like I don't is that Like I saw the Kirsten
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: Johnson memes after what is I like forgot that they're
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: not the same person.
- 1:03:16Speaker 5: I'd never considered it until she died, because suddenly we've
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: gotten a lot of calls and emails about it. I'm
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: just like, oh, that's really interesting. But I guess it's
- 1:03:26Speaker 5: just like why did they look so similar? I guess
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: it's like a nineties TV sitcom bucket that both of
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: them filled.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: And yeah, they play the same, both of them.
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: Because I feel like Kristin Johnson when she made I
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: guess her first big show was Third Rock from the Sun,
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: I guess where it's like, like, it wouldn't surprise me
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: if they were like, well, we need a Kirsty Alley
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: type for this totally, so like here's this woman who'll
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: fill the bucket because like they're also plug and play,
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: especially in the nineties, like all those shows were basically
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: the same. It's like, oh, but this time they're Aliens.
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: Well, when she fell out of the Chirsty Ally was
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: arguably much more famous because.
- 1:04:02Speaker 5: She was a movie Oh yeah, she.
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: Had a film career and and Kristin Johnson, you know,
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: I mean to me, her greatest work was as Lexi
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Featherstone in that one episode of Absolute I'll bet you
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: they went out to Kirsty Ali first, they were like, Kirsty,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: will you please fall out of this window?
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: And she was like not.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: I wonder if Kristy Ali like what. I feel like
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: she is too like self obsessed and has no sense
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: of humour about herself, Like I don't know that she
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: would be willing to like die and something like that,
- 1:04:27Speaker 5: like maybe she said no, And then Kristen Kirsten Johnson
- 1:04:30Speaker 5: just has a better sense of humor where she's like, yeah,
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: I don't care. I didn't all smoke a cigarette and
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: fall out a window.
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: I didn't watch fat actress, but I was told that
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: it was pretty good, So maybe she does have a
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: sense of humor about herself.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: That's what I'm trying.
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: Were you were you told it was actually pretty good?
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it was actually pretty good.
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: I did watch Veronica's Closet when it was on. I
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: don't really remember anything about it, but I did.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: Watch it.
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: I know I watched it too.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: She will forever, but I I mean, I was just
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: thinking about it last night. She really had the filmography,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: like she had a lot of hits dropped out. Gorgeous
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: obviously is my favorite, but like she was in every
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: big movie in the nineties, and like especially in a
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: lot of mom roles, like she was very good, having
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: like a a sort of like like down to earth
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: warmth but still like funny.
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: I like, like, look, Who's Talking is a good movie,
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: you know, like and it's good kind of mostly because
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: she's really good in it. I mean, also the baby
- 1:05:34Speaker 5: voices are funny, like whatever. But she's she's very likable.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: Like the moment when she's on screen, she's very likable,
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: and the moment she's off screen, it's like no one's
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: ever been more unlikable.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: That movie's about talking babies, right, I'm not mistaken. It is.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's fully like about but she talking babies.
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: And she gets pregnant like her boss, isn't it. Like
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: her boss is a real piece of shit. And they
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: have they have like some kind of affair and she
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: gets pregnant and the boss wants something to do with her,
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: so he ends up raising this baby alone and it
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: has the voice of Bruce Willis.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: The only thing I remember about those movies is I
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: think there's a scene where there's a talking sperm fertilizing
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: an egg.
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: No, it's like the opening of the movie. Yeah, because
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: they like they have sex at the beginning and then
- 1:06:17Speaker 5: and then it immediately cuts to like all these sperm
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: like like floating around and like get into the egg.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: We need more movies about sperm, right, we need more
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: movies inside vaginal canals.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Oh wait, we have blonde so glads.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: I still haven't seen me either.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: No, there's no reason, there's no reason.
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: I just don't think I'm ever gonna do it.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: All you need to know is that the camera goes
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: inside Marilyn Monroe's vagina twice twice, not once, twice, Yes,
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: as part as a way to show her trauma or something.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: Did that ever happen on Golden Girls? Did they ever
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: go to the college?
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: No?
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: But they do go to a sperm bank. There's like
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: funny there's there's a funny episode about like Blanche's daughter,
- 1:07:02Speaker 5: who's like one of the worst characters in the show,
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: and it's played by at least two actresses, maybe three,
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: decides that she wants to have a baby as a
- 1:07:10Speaker 5: single woman, and she has to go to a sperm
- 1:07:12Speaker 5: bank in Miami, and it's like a very funny scene
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: and they talk like openly about sperm in a way
- 1:07:18Speaker 5: that's like pretty hysterical, but like we don't go inside
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: any of their vaginas ever, So that was like a
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: bridge too far.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: Yeah, if there was, I mean, and there probably inevitably
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: will be a Golden Girl's reboot.
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: Who would you want to see in it?
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: Oh?
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: My god?
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: Uh?
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Did it? Okay?
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: Wait, I need to actually look up her name so
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: that I'm not just saying the lady from Triangle of Sadness.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: But there's this car.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: I still haven't seen it.
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: It's I mean, it needs an editor. But okay, Dolly
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: de Leon, is that's true?
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: There's this there's this character.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: Dolly de Leon, who would be so good in A
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: Golden Girl's Reboot.
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: I feel she's so good and triangle of sadness that movie.
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: I agree with the editing thing, but like by the
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: you're sort of like, oh my god, this movie is
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: still on and then she shows up in your life
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: and find that this movie is exactly yeah.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: Rose, no spoilers, but she basically emerged. She's a character
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: that essentially emerges in the third act of the film
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: and takes over and you're just like you're so in
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: her hands and she becomes the best character.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Okay, so she's one of the Golden girls in the rebo.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: I think you would.
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: Need Gloria Estephan honestly, Like I think you lean into
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: the Miami. I think you lean into the Miami of it,
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: and you're like, this is Gloria Stephan's house, Like that's
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: the and she's the numberwelf. Yeah, I think that's maybe
- 1:08:35Speaker 5: like the number one mandatory. I think you like really
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: go all in on the Miami aspect, and it's like
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: you find three other women. I don't care who it is,
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: but like if Gloria Stephan is Blanche, I think that
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: we have a winning.
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: Show like that doesn't Rosi O'Donnell, has she that you
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: have a house the island, right, Yeah, that's the Rich
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: Island or whatever where they all live.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Okay, So Rose O'Donnell is one of the is one
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: of the women?
- 1:08:57Speaker 5: Yeah that works, not that?
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: And then who's the fourth one we should get?
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: Uh?
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: I was gonna say a queer woman, and then I
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: was like, we just said, like the biggest lesbian in.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: The world, not Leah Delaria Phoebe.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: We can't be.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: Character these women are not they don't look.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: The thing about honestly Golden Girls is that these women
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: looked old but now like women like now it's like,
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: oh Lucy lou is fifty five, You're like, what the
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: fuck like happened? Like, no, with them, we have to
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: get someone truly ancient people that look like Kilda in
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: her Suspiria Matrix lay Yeah exactly, yeah, God, who who
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: I was just it's just.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: C G I Betty White like we used like the
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: we use like Betty White.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Actually, maybe there should be a man as one of
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: the Golden Girls, a gay guy who's an old gay
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: guy who could who could be Ian McKellen has never
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: had like an old fag role like he I mean
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: in the colle he needs a role where he is
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: a fat.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: I'm really glad.
- 1:10:08Speaker 5: It's just a good format. Like I'm just saying, any
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: you could really cast anyone in that fourth bucket and
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: it would be a good show. I think that they're
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: just it's a good format. Like older people like doing
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: whatever they want to do in Miami, especially if they're
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: rich and they live on whatever that island is.
- 1:10:24Speaker 3: Yeah, we have to get rid of the whole, like
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: they have to move in because they can't pay rent.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: There needs to be some kind of like other conceit
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: because they have to be wealthy. It just doesn't work
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: otherwise there's no class consciousness in this reboot.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: Did we cast them.
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: Into their specific roles or are we just going to
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: give them new archetypes. It's probably new archetypes.
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: But then I think, well, if we need a slut
- 1:10:47Speaker 5: glorious stuff on his blood one.
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: Still Dolly daily On can be the Sofia because she's
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: like the meanest.
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: And then who wilse to be? Oh Rosie O'Donnell's Rose
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: and no Harvey Firestein is Rose the AI or the
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: AI hologram Rose and then Rosie O'donald's, Rosie O'donald's Dorothy. No,
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: Rosie Donalds Dorothy. I think it works.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: I don't like.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: And then Gloria Estefan is the slide.
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: I have to say, I don't approve of Rosie o'donnald
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: and this.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: This well, too bad, too bad.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Central Central Casting has spoken.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: She talks, said that she wants to do it. Really,
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: she said she wanted to do it.
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: Oh, I mean, I'm just assuming.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Oh she's yeah, No, I I texted her she's she's
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Oh God.
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: Wait.
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: Can I just say I did just google old female
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: actresses still alive?
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: And the first let.
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: Me let me so it's really old female?
- 1:11:49Speaker 3: I know not and also not let me tell you
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: I did not use the old cis gender female. No,
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: I have to say it's still alive. Still, let me clarify.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: I did not type in old female actresses. I typed
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: in like an old actress now or something like that,
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: and then it suggested one of the suggested ones this
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: old female actress is still live, and that is the
- 1:12:12Speaker 3: page that I'm on right now.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: And let me read you this list.
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: Nicole Kidman now, Helena Bonham Garter Robin Wright, Halle.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Berry and Salma Hayak. None of these women are old.
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: We live in a variety. This is crazy.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: I feel insane reading this anyways.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Well, I identify as an old female actress still.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: For now, I just want to say one last thing.
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: Blanche Rue McClanahan was fifty three when the Golden Girls started,
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: and Nicole Kimman is fifty five. So but in eighties,
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: in eighties Hollywood terms, Nicole Kidman is an old all
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: Hollywood actress, still alive. When they said when they said
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: heartbreak feels good in a place like this, they were
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: talking about that, how us and eating cheesecake, slide into
