- 5:07dream and as we sleep, God, you speak to us in dreams and
- 5:11visions. Gods and visitations.

- 5:56for peace to reign supreme. God, I pray that you'll be
- 6:05glorified in the highest today. We love you, King Jesus, we
- 6:10worship you, and it's in your holy and precious and powerful
- 6:16name that I pray. Amen.
- 6:22Well, let's start in verse one. And when it was determined that
- 6:29we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other
- 6:36prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus's band.
- 6:45All right, so here we go. You can see Doctor Luke is on
- 6:49board. He is the one pinning these
- 6:51words inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 6:53And he says we meaning that they have given Paul lots of liberty
- 6:59and they have allowed some of his companions to sail along
- 7:02with him. And this would have been a cargo
- 7:05ship. This would have not been a fast
- 7:09sailing ship that was easily navigated through rough winds
- 7:17and rough weather. This would have been a very
- 7:20heavy ship that was bringing grain from Egypt down into Rome.
- 7:26And you would have seen 200 plus people on this ship.
- 7:31And there would have been lots of prisoners who would have had
- 7:34to appear in the Coliseum, would have had to appear in the arena
- 7:39as punishment for their crimes. And here look at how Paul takes
- 7:44center stage on the ship. And because he was a man of
- 7:48integrity and because he spoke the truth and because he
- 7:51practiced hospitality, the men here could not help but to
- 7:56listen to him as he becomes the centerpiece of the this voyage.
- 8:05We're going to see that materialize as we read through
- 8:08this chapter verse 2 and entering into a ship of
- 8:14adoramatim. We launched meaning to sail by
- 8:20the coast of Asia, one aristocrats of Macedonian of
- 8:25Thessalonica being with us three and the next day we touched at
- 8:30Sidon and Julius courteously entreated Paul and gave him
- 8:35liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.
- 8:39So you can see here that Paul had such providential God
- 8:47honoring privilege that he was able to move about as if he was
- 8:54a free man, because deep down they knew that Paul was not
- 8:58guilty of anything, and it was for envy that they had handed
- 9:02him over. 4 And when he had launched from there, we sailed
- 9:08under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary. 5 And when we had
- 9:14sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamplia, we came to Myra, a
- 9:19city of Lithia. 6 And there the centurion found a ship of
- 9:24Alexandria sailing into Italy, and he put us in it.
- 9:30This would have been the the large cargo ship friends filled
- 9:35with things to take to Rome, and when we had sailed slowly many
- 9:41days and scarce would come over against Nydius, the wind not
- 9:47suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salomone.
- 9:51So you need to understand that Paul had already been on many
- 9:55missionary journeys and he had sailed many waters, and by this
- 10:00time he would have been able to see that there was a repetition
- 10:07of what is to come. Paul would have been able to
- 10:10gauge the weather and gauge the seasons and gauge the waves.
- 10:16In here by divine interpretation and because of common sense,
- 10:22Paul is going to warn them against trying to push on A and
- 10:27hardly passing. It came unto a place which is
- 10:31called the Fair Havens, near whereunto was the city of Lycia.
- 10:37So here this Fair Havens was not a very pleasant place to try to
- 10:45winter over, and it would have been a small town that these men
- 10:49probably were not willing to try and stay at until it was time to
- 10:56sail again. 9 Now, when much time was spent, and when sailing
- 11:05was now dangerous because the fast was now already passed,
- 11:11Paul admonished them. Paul is marking all of what is
- 11:19happening by relation to the Jewish calendar, and he's saying
- 11:26that the Day of Atonement has already passed this fast that
- 11:31they would have taken. And he's saying that anyone
- 11:34should know and anyone could know that it is not time to take
- 11:39to the waters. So he's going to admonish them
- 11:43in. And he said to them, sirs, I
- 11:45perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage not
- 11:51only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
- 11:56So Paul here is trying to get them to come to their senses to
- 12:00realize that this is not an opportune time to try and sail
- 12:06about in this hunk of a ship that would have had just two
- 12:11rudders in the back. And it was not a traditional
- 12:17kind of ship that was easily navigable in rough choppy waters
- 12:23with Gale wind strength. 9 Nevertheless, the centurion
- 12:30believed the master and the owner of the ship more than
- 12:33those things which were spoken by Paul.
- 12:35Paul was just a lowly prisoner here and so they wrongfully so,
- 12:43went to people in higher positions.
- 12:45And what a a word for us friends.
- 12:50God uses the lowly things to humble the proud and the wise
- 12:58and this is the way of God. God can teach us some of the
- 13:03most remarkable lessons by those that are so-called underneath
- 13:09us, because there is a great equalizer in this life, and it
- 13:14is death, and it is our eternal destination.
- 13:18And the least shall be the greatest, and the last shall be
- 13:23the first, And the first shall be the last, and the greatest
- 13:26shall be the least. And God's economy is not like
- 13:29the one that we try to establish.
- 13:32And they should have gone to this lowly prisoner and listen
- 13:36to him, but instead they went to those that were in power and
- 13:40they came up shorthanded and empty, friends.
- 13:44And that is a word for you and for me.
- 13:47It is by the counsel of many righteous people that we come to
- 13:52know what is the will of the Lord.
- 13:55We should not just be rogue agents out here on an island
- 13:59unto ourselves. We need to be in community.
- 14:01We need to have discipline and be discipled and be disciplining
- 14:06and discipling others. And it is a whole cycle,
- 14:09Friends. 12 And because the haven was not commodious to
- 14:18winter in the more part advised to depart from there also, if by
- 14:23any means they might attain to Phoenix and there to Winter,
- 14:28which is a haven of Crete and lies toward the southwest and
- 14:34northwest. So this would have been about 40
- 14:37miles from where they were sitting.
- 14:40And these men did not want to try to winter over in this
- 14:43little podunk small town, and they wanted to go somewhere that
- 14:47would have been a little bit more advantageous and a little
- 14:54bit more hospitable for their wintering over.
- 14:59And Paul was trying to tell them it was not the time and that
- 15:03they should stay put. But let's see what happens. 13
- 15:08And when the South wind blew softly, supposing that they had
- 15:12obtained their purpose, losing from there they sailed close by
- 15:18Crete. 14 But not long after there arose against it a
- 15:24tempestuous wind called Eurocyclon.
- 15:28So this was a Nor'easter. This would have been almost
- 15:32hurricane string force, and this was why Paul had tried to tell
- 15:38them not to sail out in this big hunk of a ship. 15 and when the
- 15:43ship was caught, it could not bear up into the wind.
- 15:47We let her drive. That's all you could have done
- 15:50in that moment. There was no fighting against
- 15:52this wind, so they just let it take course. 16 And running
- 15:59under a certain island, which is called Clauda, we had much work
- 16:03to come by the boat. 17 which when they had taken up, they
- 16:09used helps under girding the ship and fearing lest they
- 16:13should fall into the quicksands, strike sail, and so were driven.
- 16:18So they were worried about running into the rocks and
- 16:22running aground and the ship being beat all the pieces and
- 16:26falling apart. 18 and when and we being exceedingly tossed with
- 16:34a Tempest. The next day they lightened the
- 16:36ship. You can imagine these sailors
- 16:38having seasickness and being afraid for their lives as the
- 16:43waves grew larger than the ship. You can see how all of these men
- 16:48were trying desperately. They were grasping at straws.
- 16:52They're trying to lighten the load 19 and the third day we
- 16:59cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.
- 17:02They're even tossing overboard the things needed to sail
- 17:08correctly. Their tackle they are tossing
- 17:11overboard 20 and when neither sun nor stars in many days
- 17:17appeared and no small Tempest lay on us, all hope that we
- 17:23should be saved was then taken away.
- 17:26They needed the sun, and they needed the stars to try to
- 17:31navigate. And there was no sun or stars
- 17:35because the clouds covered them over day and night.
- 17:39They could not tell where they were.
- 17:41They were lost without hope, friends, and they'd given up all
- 17:45hope friends. 21 But after long abstinence, Paul stood forth in
- 17:55the midst of them and said, Sirs, you should have listened
- 18:00to me and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this
- 18:05harm and loss. So he's saying, I told you so.
- 18:12Paul couldn't help himself. He just told him the way that it
- 18:17was. Paul was not one to hold back on
- 18:21his words. He rebuked the Apostle Peter for
- 18:27trying to succumb to the Jewish customs.
- 18:32Paul was a heavyweight hitter. He held no punches.
- 18:36And he told you like it was. And he said, I tried to tell
- 18:41y'all, 22. And now I exhort you to be of
- 18:48good cheer, for there shall be no loss of any man's life among
- 18:53you, but of the ship. So he's saying you're going to
- 18:57lose this boat, but there's not going to be 1 soul lost.
- 19:02Not one person is going to die. We're all going to be safe.
- 19:09And this was a promise from the Angel, promise from God. 23 four
- 19:15there stood by me this night the Angel of God, whose I am and
- 19:21whom I serve. Praise God.
- 19:24Hallelujah. This Angel appears to Paul and
- 19:29you can see this divine encounter, You can see this
- 19:33divine protection, you can see that God is desirous for Paul to
- 19:40stand before Rome and to give the account of the Lord Jesus
- 19:46Christ to all those that are there.
- 19:49And so he is protecting him all along the way.
- 19:52And these people on a byproduct are going to be saved.
- 19:57And they're going to know that Paul's word is accurately from
- 20:00God because it is going to come to fruition and fulfillment
- 20:05exactly the way that he said that it would.
- 20:08The ship would be lost, but the people would be saved. 24
- 20:14saying, Fear not, Paul, you must be brought before Caesar and Lo.
- 20:22God has given you all them that sail with you.
- 20:25Praise God. When we're in the company of a
- 20:29St. There is a natural overflow of
- 20:32the abundance of the grace of God, and the Spirit of the Lord
- 20:36is in that place. And people prophecy and speak in
- 20:40tongues and miracles break out, and the Holy Spirit is there and
- 20:46freedom abounds. Praise God. 25 Wherefore serves
- 20:56be of good cheer, for I believe God that it shall be, even as it
- 21:01was told me. That is faith in a nutshell.
- 21:05That is what faith looks like. It is believing God in the
- 21:10middle of circumstances that are unbelievable.
- 21:16It is believing God's promise in the midst of the chaos.
- 21:23We must increase our faith as the world goes by the wayside,
- 21:27and Jesus Christ told us it would be so.
- 21:33Paul is going to pin later on in Timothy how the world is going
- 21:37to look. And as the world looks more and
- 21:40more like the way that he said that it would, we must believe
- 21:44the promises that he is working mightily all around us, even
- 21:49though all of our senses tell us otherwise.
- 21:52Increase your faith today, friends.
- 21:54And that is what Paul has done. He says, I believe God, even
- 21:58though it sure doesn't look that way right now. 26 Howbeit we
- 22:05must be cast upon a certain island.
- 22:08So God did not tell him the name of the island.
- 22:10He just said it would be an island. 27 But when the 14th
- 22:17night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria
- 22:21about midnight, the shipment deemed that they drew near to
- 22:27some country. Perhaps it was the Breakers of
- 22:32the waves that gave away that they were near some kind of
- 22:35land. And here you can see it's been 2
- 22:39weeks that they've been tossed to and fro this seasickness and
- 22:44their inability to eat anything. 28 and sounded and found it 20
- 22:52fathoms. And when they had gone a little
- 22:55further, they sounded again and found it 15 fathoms.
- 22:59So they were letting down their anchors to see how close the the
- 23:04bottom of the sea was, and they found it to be 90 feet.
- 23:08Then they found it to be 60 feet.
- 23:10And then they perceived that they were nearer and nearer
- 23:14close to land. Friends, they were just being
- 23:18driven along. 29 Then, fearing lest we should have fallen upon
- 23:25rocks, they cast 4 anchors out of the stern and wished for the
- 23:30day. What a what a thought, friends,
- 23:33They throw their anchors overboard, and throw caution to
- 23:36the wind, and they're going on a hope and a prayer.
- 23:39They wished for the day, they wish for the day that they were
- 23:43back on safe ground. Two weeks here.
- 23:47They're driven along uncontrollable at the mercies of
- 23:52nature. 30 And as the ship men were about to flee out of the
- 24:01ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea under color,
- 24:05as though they would have cast anchors out of the four ship.
- 24:09So here they're letting go of their little lifeboat and
- 24:15they're trying to save their skin here. 31 Paul said to the
- 24:20Centurion and to the soldiers, except these abide in the ship,
- 24:25you cannot be saved. So Paul took the revelation from
- 24:30the Angel of God to be literal, and he's saying that everyone
- 24:34needed to be saved. And if they were to kill off the
- 24:39prisoners, if these soldiers were to go and to kill the
- 24:45prisoners prematurely before they rent aground and we're all
- 24:50safe, then they themselves would not be saved.
- 24:55And that is what Paul is meaning here.
- 24:57He's saying leave them alone, let them live because God said
- 25:01everyone on the ship would live. And when you are in the
- 25:04proximity of God, it is life and life abundant, friends, even if
- 25:09it is eternal life. Everything he touch comes to
- 25:16life. Friends 32 Then the soldiers cut
- 25:24off the ropes of the boat and let her fall off.
- 25:27That's them releasing that little lifeboat. 33 And while
- 25:31the day was coming on, Paul begged them all to take meat,
- 25:36saying this day is the 14th day that you have tarried and
- 25:42continued fasting, having taken nothing.
- 25:46So he's saying we have had nothing to eat for 14 days, we
- 25:50weren't able to eat anything. And now here we are about to run
- 25:54aground, take meat, take food, be strengthened, and here we're
- 26:00going to see him taking communion. 34 Wherefore I pray
- 26:07you to take some meat, for this is for your health, and there
- 26:13shall not a hair fall from the head of any of you.
- 26:18He believed the word of God. 35 And when he had thus spoken, he
- 26:26took bread, gave thanks to God in the presence of them all, and
- 26:31when he had broken it, he began to eat.
- 26:35Look at how he Harkins his mind back to the Last Supper, the
- 26:40body being broken. Look at how he gives thanks.
- 26:44This is something that we should do daily, friends, give thanks
- 26:49unto the Lord for everything that we have. 36 Then were they
- 26:58all of good cheer, and they also took some meat. 37 And we were
- 27:04in all in the ship. 203 score and 16 skulls souls. 38 And when
- 27:14they had eaten enough, they lighten the ship and cast out
- 27:17the wheat into the sea. So they're just continuously
- 27:21lightening the ship, which is going to drive them further and
- 27:24further to safety. 39 And when it was day, they knew not the
- 27:33land, but they discovered a certain Creek with a shore into
- 27:37the which they were minded if it were possible to thrust in the
- 27:42ship. So they're trying to get the
- 27:44ship to land here on this island. 40 And when they had
- 27:51taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the
- 27:55sea, and loosed the rudder bands and hoist up to the wind, and
- 28:01made towards shore. They're running a straight
- 28:04course to land. 41 And falling into a place where two seas met,
- 28:12they ran the ship aground, and the four parts struck fast and
- 28:17remained unmovable, but the hind part was broken with the
- 28:23violence of the waves. So this ship had been weakened
- 28:28so much in the tempestuous winds and the roaring sea that as soon
- 28:36as it ran aground it started to break up. 42 in the Soldiers
- 28:40Council was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them
- 28:44should swim out and escape. So there it is.
- 28:48These prisoners are. About.
- 28:52To get their freedom from the ship and the soldiers, thinking
- 28:56they would run away, they want to kill him.
- 29:00But what does Paul say? But the centurion, willing to
- 29:03save Paul, kept them from their purpose and commanded that they,
- 29:09which could swim, should cast themselves first into the sea
- 29:13and get to land. So it was Paul who told them
- 29:18that they all needed to stay together.
- 29:21The Centurion found that Paul had won favor over, and because
- 29:27he did not want to harm Paul, he chose not to harm the soldiers
- 29:32here. 44 we'll. End here and the rest, some on
- 29:39boards, some unbroken pieces of the ship.
- 29:43And so it came to pass that they escaped all safe to land, just
- 29:49as God told him that it would be.
- 29:53How amazing is this? Book that we hold in our hands
- 29:55how amazing is the promises of God for us I.
- 30:01Hope that you are. Resting on the promises of God
- 30:04that you do not see the Bible as a book of rules of do's and
- 30:08don'ts. This.
- 30:11Bible is a book. Of promises for us friends.
- 30:14And He promises that He's coming back, and He promises that where
- 30:18He is, we shall be with him. And he promises us an abundant
- 30:22life. And he promises us peace,
- 30:25friends. And he promises us that we will
- 30:30see him and. He told Thomas he.
- 30:33Says, blessed are you because you see and believe, Thomas, but
- 30:39how much more blessed are they that don't see and believe?
- 30:43And that's you. And that's me, friends.
- 30:46And then whenever John the Baptist was in prison and he
- 30:49sent some of his disciples to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah
- 30:55or should they wait for another, What did Jesus say?
- 30:59Jesus said, what did you go out into the wilderness to see?
- 31:03And then he goes on to to say that out of all the prophets,
- 31:09there was none greater than John the Baptist.
- 31:12But the least in the Kingdom of God is greater than John.
- 31:18That's you, that's me. Rest in those promises, friends.
