- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh god, it's coming my way.
- 0:01Speaker 2: It's one more thing.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm strong and Getty, one more thing. This could be anything.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I am intrigued.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's kind of sports kind of not kind of anyway.
- 0:14Speaker 2: So there was one of the biggest comebacks in NBA
- 0:17Speaker 2: history last night, certainly in a conference finals history. Nick's
- 0:20Speaker 2: coming back on the calves. They were twenty two down
- 0:24Speaker 2: with a little over seven minutes left, and they came
- 0:26Speaker 2: back and ended up winning. Here's a little bit of that.
- 0:28Speaker 1: No. Three Potter that one halfway down bridges fires away,
- 0:35Speaker 1: won't go and we go to overtime and sucks. Cleveland
- 0:40Speaker 1: was too cavalier. I'm Joe Getty.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So what was interesting about that, and this is what
- 0:45Speaker 2: I kind of want to talk about, is just pressure
- 0:48Speaker 2: and the way it affects different people and whether it's
- 0:50Speaker 2: a characteriser or genetics or whatever it is. But uh,
- 0:57Speaker 2: I was actually mentioned a Joe during one of the
- 0:58Speaker 2: commercial breaks. A weird thing about so far ahead, like
- 1:01Speaker 2: Cleveland was up by twenty two, is that when the
- 1:04Speaker 2: other team starts to come back, it's almost, well it's
- 1:07Speaker 2: not almost. It's definitely worse than if you'd have been
- 1:10Speaker 2: up by five and they came back because you got
- 1:14Speaker 2: this whole holy crap, we're falling apart. This is embarrassing thing.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And the crowd goes nuts because they're witnessing history and
- 1:22Speaker 2: stuff like that, and you can see them choking. These
- 1:25Speaker 2: are professional athletes who've been great their whole lives and
- 1:30Speaker 2: former MVP what James Harden a horrible airball three pointer?
- 1:35Speaker 1: Just I mean like.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Into the stands as the nick started to come back
- 1:39Speaker 2: and all the celebrities are cheering and everything like that.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Wow. So what that made me think of is uh,
- 1:48Speaker 1: how I.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Well, I got which story do you want to tell first?
- 1:52Speaker 2: I'll go with this direction. The biggest choke I ever
- 1:57Speaker 2: had in my life doing anything, any competition, and this
- 2:00Speaker 2: is not much of an athletic event. I was playing
- 2:03Speaker 2: shuffle board at a book and I'm talking about the
- 2:08Speaker 2: kind of shuffle board where it's a wooden table that
- 2:10Speaker 2: you put sawdust on and you got the little metal
- 2:13Speaker 2: things and you slide him to each end like shuffle boarding,
- 2:16Speaker 2: you try to knock the other guy off and everything
- 2:18Speaker 2: like that.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Wow, sawdust, I've only seen salt really interesting.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Sawdust like you put on the dance Floorida country bar,
- 2:25Speaker 2: triple they always use it.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But anyway, I don't even remember. It's been so long
- 2:30Speaker 1: since I played.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I used to play all the time.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Great beer drinking sport. Good do you mean it.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Gives you an excuse to stand there and pound beers
- 2:37Speaker 2: for hours on end. But I was playing with this
- 2:39Speaker 2: guy we used to work with, and.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I was beating him really bad.
- 2:45Speaker 2: And I remember, if you played a twenty one or
- 2:47Speaker 2: I don't even know. Let's pretend it's twenty one and
- 2:50Speaker 2: I'm up like twenty to one and he starts to
- 2:56Speaker 2: come back and he gets to like three, so now
- 2:58Speaker 2: it's twenty to three, and he said, I'm gonna come
- 3:00Speaker 2: back and beat beat you with this. And I said,
- 3:03Speaker 2: if you come back and beat me now, because we
- 3:05Speaker 2: were playing for beer, I said, you come back and
- 3:08Speaker 2: beat me, I will buy your beer for the rest
- 3:10Speaker 2: of your life.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Oh my, oh my.
- 3:14Speaker 2: So it becomes oh boy, twenty to three, twenty to five,
- 3:18Speaker 2: twenty to eight, twenty and when it started getting closer,
- 3:21Speaker 2: it went it went from I'm not worried about this,
- 3:23Speaker 2: I only need one more point.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And I win too.
- 3:25Speaker 2: As he started to get closer, kind of like the
- 3:27Speaker 2: Cavaliers in the Knicks Last night, it started to it
- 3:30Speaker 2: started to get really, it's just the puck felt just
- 3:33Speaker 2: different in my hands, and it's just.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Just the way that happens. And it's weird. It's such
- 3:38Speaker 1: a psychological thing.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Like the puck felt different in my hands, like I
- 3:42Speaker 2: couldn't just or like did I.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Always hold my arm this way? Did I have my
- 3:46Speaker 1: hobob like that? Or did I used to have it
- 3:47Speaker 1: down like this? Just things you never thought about before
- 3:50Speaker 1: become a thing. Yeah, from this the unconscious to the conscious. Yeah,
- 3:55Speaker 1: Like elite athletes are super aware of that and work
- 3:58Speaker 1: and work and work and generally have to screw it
- 4:01Speaker 1: up once before they realize, okay, this is what it
- 4:04Speaker 1: feels like. And the sports psychologists work with him a lot.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You've worked your whole life to be in this position.
- 4:11Speaker 1: This is a good thing. It's not a bad thing.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Your nervous system is telling you be scared, be scared,
- 4:16Speaker 1: But you're not scared. You're excited.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Wells And I've heard Steph Curry, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird
- 4:21Speaker 2: say the reason that they are in there three hours
- 4:24Speaker 2: before other players get there. You know they're already great.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Why are you doing this? Because when you get into
- 4:30Speaker 2: that moment. You need your body to take over so
- 4:33Speaker 2: that your your rattled mind isn't in charge. Your body
- 4:36Speaker 2: just does what your body has done a million times.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Is better for that situation, according to Kobe or whoever.
- 4:44Speaker 2: But anyway, so I'm playing the shuffle board game. He
- 4:46Speaker 2: gets closer, it comes back, and he beats me. Luckily,
- 4:49Speaker 2: he's not a big drinker. He got fired from wherever
- 4:52Speaker 2: we work, and I have never seen him.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Again because who knows how much beer I had to
- 4:56Speaker 1: buy him all my life.
- 4:58Speaker 2: SEEZ was twenty five years ago. I wonder how many
- 5:02Speaker 2: beers I owe him.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I was gonna ask, do you just send me a
- 5:04Speaker 1: check once a month or once a year? Tell you what,
- 5:07Speaker 1: that's gonna be my kid's first case when she gets
- 5:09Speaker 1: out of law school. I'm gonna have her find that
- 5:11Speaker 1: guy and sue you, and then you know, we'll get
- 5:14Speaker 1: thirty three percent of the beer the attorney.
- 5:19Speaker 2: But I was thinking about this and not just around sports,
- 5:22Speaker 2: although I can only come up with one other example.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I was watching my son last night, the boy Scout
- 5:28Speaker 2: thing I talked a little bit about on the radio show,
- 5:30Speaker 2: and he wasn't one of the MC's. He just received
- 5:32Speaker 2: an award thing that you went up for. But some
- 5:36Speaker 2: of the MC's and these are kids, and they were
- 5:37Speaker 2: doing a good job in front of a crowd about
- 5:39Speaker 2: sixty seventy people, and a couple of them seemed a
- 5:42Speaker 2: little nervous, but a couple of them seemed to really
- 5:44Speaker 2: confident because they've done this many years and they get practiced.
- 5:47Speaker 2: As the scout master was explaining, I said, you know,
- 5:50Speaker 2: I'll bet I know college graduates who is the first
- 5:54Speaker 2: time they ever do that? Is the first time they
- 5:55Speaker 2: ever do that when they're like twenty three, ever stand
- 5:59Speaker 2: up in front of that big out doing something of
- 6:01Speaker 2: any importance whatsoever. That's not just the classroom and uh,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and these guys have had these experience, this experience and
- 6:07Speaker 2: they're getting better at it. But I was, so, is
- 6:11Speaker 2: that people that are terrified of public speaking. That's not
- 6:15Speaker 2: a character issue. Is it it's just a you're built
- 6:17Speaker 2: that way or not? Because I think, yeah, a lot
- 6:20Speaker 2: of it's inborn, a lot of it's experience.
- 6:22Speaker 1: But it's both.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I've never been bothered by being in front of public
- 6:26Speaker 2: for speaking stuff, whereas for the sports thing, horrified if
- 6:31Speaker 2: it was in front of other people. I was I
- 6:36Speaker 2: was a mediocre athlete, but I wasn't horrible. If I
- 6:40Speaker 2: was just in the backyard with my friends, I was
- 6:43Speaker 2: as good as anybody else.
- 6:44Speaker 1: I just I was okay.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I could hit and catch and do stuff. I wasn't
- 6:47Speaker 2: gonna embarrass myself. I would have never tried to play
- 6:50Speaker 2: Little League or any other sport if I was embarrassingly bad.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I know a lot of people who just you know,
- 6:56Speaker 2: they you're just not born with the ability to do
- 6:58Speaker 2: sports at all, See don't. I could somewhat, but I
- 7:02Speaker 2: couldn't in a game. I couldn't in a game that ball.
- 7:05Speaker 2: That's why the intro was, Oh my god, it's coming
- 7:08Speaker 2: my way. The ball gets hit in the air, and
- 7:10Speaker 2: I got all these thoughts going through my head. Wow,
- 7:13Speaker 2: all the people in the stands, everybody's watching. If I
- 7:15Speaker 2: drop this, this is gonna be the most.
- 7:17Speaker 1: That's all I'm thinking.
- 7:19Speaker 2: In the backyard with friends, I just catch it and
- 7:21Speaker 2: make the throw. Not think about a thing, right, And
- 7:25Speaker 2: I know people with public speaking like I don't think
- 7:28Speaker 2: about anything. If I'm walking up in front of a
- 7:30Speaker 2: crowd of public speaking other this would be a funny
- 7:32Speaker 2: thing to say. I might think that, but I don't think,
- 7:34Speaker 2: oh my god, what if I screw up? All these
- 7:37Speaker 2: people are watching me. I don't have those thoughts.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I know some people do. Sure, And it's weird. How
- 7:44Speaker 1: why just.
- 7:45Speaker 2: The quirk of the brain.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's probably a stew of things life experience. Uh,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know, I don't. I don't know. It's an interesting question.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Can you can't think of another example between other than
- 8:00Speaker 2: or in public speaking? Is there anything else.
- 8:02Speaker 1: That's like that? Oh? I get, you know, giving a
- 8:05Speaker 1: sales presentation, that sort of thing, being smooth and charming
- 8:10Speaker 1: and getting the slides right or whatever on your power.
- 8:12Speaker 1: You know, I don't know. I'm sure there are musical performances.
- 8:19Speaker 1: One certainly.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Interactions with people of the opposite sex or same sex
- 8:24Speaker 2: if you swing that way.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I remember I was amazed.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I'm comfortable at this point in my life, but I
- 8:31Speaker 2: certainly wasn't when I was younger, and I was amazed
- 8:33Speaker 2: by the people that just seem to be automatically. They
- 8:35Speaker 2: just could walk up to any girl and say anything.
- 8:37Speaker 2: And I was like, that's a superpower to me.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that's like being able to do hands springs. I
- 8:43Speaker 1: understand it. I've seen it, but no, I have it's
- 8:46Speaker 1: impossible for me to do. Yeah, I was terrible at that.
- 8:48Speaker 2: And they were just born with that for whatever reason.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, which is why I and Judy can attest to this.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Which is why I went with just complete, unvarnished sincerity
- 8:59Speaker 1: because I wasn't clever with girls. I mean, I could
- 9:02Speaker 1: be funny, but you know, I was more of the
- 9:06Speaker 1: you're really cute, I'd like to go out with you sometime,
- 9:08Speaker 1: because I was not going to dazzle them, so I
- 9:12Speaker 1: just went with I'm gonna be straightforward and it seemed
- 9:15Speaker 1: to work fairly well. Anyway, back to the sports thing,
- 9:18Speaker 1: and this is so interesting because I told you part
- 9:20Speaker 1: of this story. I was playing in a golf match.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It was a match play championship. If you know anything
- 9:27Speaker 1: about golf, match play, you don't count up the total
- 9:31Speaker 1: strokes at the end. You win individual holes. And I
- 9:35Speaker 1: was getting absolutely thrashed by my friend neighbor Sam, and
- 9:40Speaker 1: I was down five holes with five to go, meaning
- 9:44Speaker 1: it would take a miracle. And I don't want to
- 9:47Speaker 1: say I gave up, but I more or less gave up.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I thought, well, I'm getting beat, so I'm just gonna
- 9:51Speaker 1: have fun playing golf and I won the next hole,
- 9:55Speaker 1: and then I won the next hole, and then I
- 9:57Speaker 1: won the next hole, and Sam, who is a better
- 10:00Speaker 1: and more consistent player than me, he forgot which ended
- 10:03Speaker 1: the club to hold. I mean, he fell apart and
- 10:07Speaker 1: I ended up beating him on the nineteenth hole, the
- 10:10Speaker 1: extra hole, and he was just absolutely devastated. I was
- 10:13Speaker 1: highly amused. But and I've thought about this, and it
- 10:19Speaker 1: was I've thought about this a lot. That started when
- 10:24Speaker 1: I stopped giving an F And so it's not like
- 10:29Speaker 1: I rallied myself and showed my courage and led my
- 10:32Speaker 1: men to the top of the hill. No, I gave
- 10:33Speaker 1: up and I got it out of the Oh I gotta.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I got a part of my brain into the I've
- 10:39Speaker 1: done this before and it's fun part of my brain.
- 10:42Speaker 1: And if you can consciously do that, then you're Steph Curry.
- 10:45Speaker 1: And and you know, part of it is the practice
- 10:47Speaker 1: in trusting your your stroke and stuff like that. But
- 10:50Speaker 1: I also guarantee you there are athletes in that position
- 10:53Speaker 1: who say this is fun and some who think, oh my.
- 10:57Speaker 2: God, yeah, And I guess confidence of success I can
- 11:02Speaker 2: I can only apply it to like public speaking stuff.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I can be in front of a big group of
- 11:08Speaker 2: people and try a joke, and if it doesn't work,
- 11:11Speaker 2: I'll think, yeah, I didn't work. But it's worked enough
- 11:17Speaker 2: in my life that I just think they don't all work.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'm not devastated by it.
- 11:22Speaker 2: The next one will work or whatever. Kind of like
- 11:25Speaker 2: Steph Curry or Michael Jordan's Nike d that was so
- 11:27Speaker 2: brilliant back in the day. I have taken the last
- 11:30Speaker 2: shot and eighty six times and missed. Because he took
- 11:34Speaker 2: the last shot and missed a lot of times. He
- 11:37Speaker 2: didn't always make it, but he was just confident that,
- 11:39Speaker 2: you know, I'm gonna make it more often than anybody
- 11:41Speaker 2: else here, so might as well be me.
- 11:44Speaker 1: It might as well be me. Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I guess it made me feel better about getting nervous
- 11:51Speaker 2: in any situation. Watching one of the greatest NBA players
- 11:54Speaker 2: of the last generation, James Harden should out like a
- 11:57Speaker 2: me air ball wouldn't have time last night. It's like, Okay,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I guess it can get to anybody.
- 12:04Speaker 1: All right. Here's one final psychological question for you on
- 12:07Speaker 1: this topic, because I know this to be true myself, friends, pros, everybody.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Young players have no fear in a lot of sports,
- 12:18Speaker 1: it's said they have no scar tissue, they haven't screwed up,
- 12:22Speaker 1: And there seems to be a sweet spot because, like
- 12:27Speaker 1: I said, I've seen this in myself. I was utterly
- 12:29Speaker 1: unconcerned with failure, like as a young athlete, completely confident
- 12:35Speaker 1: that self consciousness actually crept in and interesting. That's interesting.
- 12:41Speaker 2: So I could, as I get older, get more afraid
- 12:43Speaker 2: of public speaking when I start to ramble and not
- 12:45Speaker 2: be funny.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'll give you this sign when that's happening.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. Yeah, And then you got like older golfers,
- 12:56Speaker 1: they get the yips. They can't even take the club back.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Oh wow, Yeah, there's no youngsters with the yips. In fact,
- 13:02Speaker 1: that's one of the greatest pieces of wisdom I ever learned,
- 13:05Speaker 1: and I have to relearn in golf. It's in potting specifically.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Put like a little kid, all right.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I taught h speech one on one in college for
- 13:15Speaker 2: a year, and there were kids that were like perfectly competent,
- 13:18Speaker 2: smart people who couldn't hold the paper in their hand
- 13:22Speaker 2: in front of thirty people in a room.
- 13:25Speaker 1: They're just so scared. Yeah, choose that. Oh I feel
- 13:30Speaker 1: for those kids. Yeah, that's rough my favorite yelled at them. Good,
- 13:35Speaker 1: that's the only way to straighten them out. Yeah, threaten
- 13:37Speaker 1: them belittle. Favorite public speaking joke The Simpsons disappointed dad
- 13:42Speaker 1: after the assembly, yelling at his kid we the purple.
- 13:45Speaker 1: What the hell was that?
- 13:52Speaker 2: I like confident bowlers strike to claim it.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I s are you siding me?
- 14:04Speaker 2: That's right?
- 14:06Speaker 1: Think you are? I am? Give me yourself, Michaels, get
- 14:12Speaker 1: it right? Well, I guess that's it.
