- 0:00Yeah, going to be, you know, another um
- 0:03incredible environment on on Saturday.
- 0:05Um you know, our students have been
- 0:07camping out since Monday. Um so I know
- 0:10they're obviously fired up. Um you know,
- 0:14important matchup for us. Um you know,
- 0:17as well as them. Um both, you know,
- 0:19sitting at five and four right now in
- 0:20the SEC. So um you know, could be a
- 0:23separator game. Um you know, two teams
- 0:25that have really been battle tested. you
- 0:27know,
- 0:29Alabama and Auburn have played the
- 0:30number one and number two hardest
- 0:32strength schedules uh two consecutive
- 0:34years, and I think we'll finish out that
- 0:36way as well. So, just kind of speaks to
- 0:38where both programs have come and, you
- 0:40know, the how aggressive that both
- 0:42programs have been in their scheduling.
- 0:43So, you they're coming off a big win um
- 0:46on uh last night um put up 100 on Texas
- 0:50A&M. So, you know, uh it's a team that
- 0:52really really scores the ball, really
- 0:54pushes the tempo, can really shoot it.
- 0:56Um and uh you know playing they're
- 0:58playing pretty well right now. Um lost
- 1:00to obviously a really good Florida team
- 1:03uh on Sunday. Um but you know to beat
- 1:05the first place team in our league uh
- 1:06last night was was big. Um got a lot of
- 1:09guards that can really score it, can
- 1:11really shoot it. Um you know I think
- 1:13they figured out their eight-man
- 1:14rotation that they're going to play
- 1:16probably the rest of the year and uh you
- 1:17know they're finally all healthy. So,
- 1:19uh, going to be, you know, another
- 1:21unbelievable opportunity for our group,
- 1:23um, to, uh, you know, try and get a win
- 1:26against, you know, another quad one
- 1:28opponent. So, um, looking forward to it
- 1:30and I know our guys are excited about
- 1:32it. You know, Todd's the only guy that's
- 1:33really played in this rivalry. So, um,
- 1:36you know, all those guys have been
- 1:38looking forward to this because they've
- 1:39watched this, you know, this this
- 1:40rivalry has turned into something
- 1:41significant and they've watched on TV
- 1:43for a couple years now. So, uh, going to
- 1:45be a great environment. you go and um
- 1:48obviously got a lot of respect for the
- 1:49job that that that Nate and his group
- 1:50have done and uh you know just looking
- 1:52forward to Saturday. So take any
- 1:54questions.
- 1:55>> Stephen, how do you approach this week
- 1:57in terms of being able to self scout and
- 1:59also try to obviously do extra prep for
- 2:01Alabama? How do you sort of balance how
- 2:03much do you prep extra for what you got
- 2:05coming up and how much can you look back
- 2:06at what you've done and try to sell
- 2:08scout?
- 2:08>> Yeah, we we've kept our process pretty
- 2:11pretty standard and uh you know business
- 2:13as usual. We, you know, with with the
- 2:15by-week, you know, we tried to work on
- 2:16us a little bit on Monday. Did a little
- 2:19bit of what they do on Tuesday, but, you
- 2:22know, really just more about getting
- 2:23healthy. You we had, you know, a couple
- 2:25guys that were really banged up um going
- 2:27into this week, so the couple days off
- 2:29came at a really good time. Um, you
- 2:31know, Keshan Hall had three stitches in
- 2:34his shooting finger and, you know, we
- 2:36didn't really report that, but for
- 2:38Keshan Hall to go out there and play
- 2:39against Tennessee, um, you know, could
- 2:42have easily have said, "No, my shooting
- 2:44hand, I'm not going to not going to risk
- 2:45run the risk of, you know, putting up
- 2:48bad numbers or bad stats, but he went
- 2:50out there and gutted it out with, you
- 2:51know, three stitches in his finger, his
- 2:53index finger on his shooting hand." You
- 2:54know, Murf's a little little banged up
- 2:56right now, but he'll be back at practice
- 2:57today. you know, KO takes a pretty nasty
- 3:00knee to the back of his head. So,
- 3:02bye-week came at a great time for us
- 3:03because we we need to get back and get
- 3:05going. But, you know, obviously gave
- 3:06them off yesterday and uh you know,
- 3:08we'll have two really good days of prep
- 3:10heading into the game this weekend.
- 3:13>> Stephen, they're averaging like 40 plus
- 3:16three-point attempts over the last few
- 3:17games. What's the challenge of facing a
- 3:19team like that and trying to defend
- 3:20somebody that will shoot a three on
- 3:22every possession, if you like?
- 3:24>> Yeah. And like you know it's it's one of
- 3:26those things where like every time a
- 3:27shot goes up you think it's going in cuz
- 3:29they have such great shooters. Um so
- 3:32yeah it's you know it's obviously a
- 3:33challenge cuz in transition you know
- 3:34there there's certain lineups out there
- 3:35where all five guys can really shoot it
- 3:37and uh you got to do a great job of
- 3:39locating those guys and you know they
- 3:41don't run sets. they just they they play
- 3:43out of rules and um you know it's just a
- 3:46lot of free flowing offense and uh so
- 3:49you got to be in a stands for 40 minutes
- 3:50because the second you stand up or the
- 3:52second you give bad help you know
- 3:54they're going to take full advantage of
- 3:55it and then they're throwing it to a guy
- 3:56that you know is a you know 35 to 43%
- 4:00three-point shooter. So uh it's going to
- 4:02require multiple efforts and uh for 40
- 4:04minutes and uh you know just you can't
- 4:07ever stop in this game because the
- 4:08second you do they take advantage of it,
- 4:11right? Uh, Stephen, the week off, was
- 4:14that opportunity for any any guys that
- 4:15are not in the seven man rotation, so to
- 4:17speak, uh, to step up and maybe earn a
- 4:19spot or ear more playing time?
- 4:20>> Well, we have an eight-man rotation.
- 4:22>> Sorry.
- 4:23>> Yeah.
- 4:24>> Um, no, I like the rotation that we've
- 4:26had, you know, since we, you know,
- 4:28inserted Blake into the lineup. Um, you
- 4:30know, we're five and two and had some
- 4:32really good wins. So, we're going to
- 4:33we're going to continue to roll with
- 4:34those guys. you know, u may shuffle a
- 4:37few things around, but you know, the
- 4:38guys that we've had in there have proven
- 4:39to given us the best opportunity to go
- 4:41in there and get wins. And, you know,
- 4:43I've just told those other guys like,
- 4:44you got to stay right, you got to stay
- 4:45ready. Um, because at any at a moment's
- 4:48notice, your opportunity, your number
- 4:49can get called and you just got to be
- 4:50ready when that moment does happen.
- 4:53>> Stephen, obviously, for a few different
- 4:55reasons, you guys have been familiar
- 4:56with Aiden and Leber. What have you seen
- 4:59from them I guess this season in terms
- 5:01of their development and the type of
- 5:02players they are and what kind of
- 5:03challenges I guess do they respectively
- 5:05pose the all back court on defense?
- 5:08>> Yeah, I mean Learon um is just, you
- 5:10know, he's going to be a first round
- 5:12draft pick and you know shoots great
- 5:14percentages from all over the floor. Um
- 5:16he's probably their most one of their
- 5:18most or their most willing passer. Um
- 5:21just does a lot of really good things
- 5:22for him offensively. Uh does a good job
- 5:24of getting to the foul line and making
- 5:26his free throws. Um he's really handsy
- 5:28defensively, makes plays, so just really
- 5:31multi-dimensional. He's got good size,
- 5:33so he can you know, shoot over the top
- 5:35of you. Um and uh you know, can really
- 5:37make shots, you know, with his feet set
- 5:39or off the bounce. And you know, Aiden
- 5:41is just, you know, I I I I knew this
- 5:44progression was going to happen for
- 5:45Aiden because I've always known how good
- 5:47Aiden was. You know, he just he had a
- 5:48rough freshman year. And uh you know,
- 5:50he's one of the you guys saw him at
- 5:52practice, like one of the most gifted,
- 5:53talented shooters you've ever seen. and
- 5:55Nate's, you know, um, said the same
- 5:57thing. And, uh, you know, I knew that,
- 6:00you know, whether he was here or there,
- 6:02he was gonna have the same amount of
- 6:03success because I just, he was too good
- 6:04of a player. He worked too hard for it
- 6:06not to happen. So, you know, played
- 6:08great for him last night. Hit some huge
- 6:10shots late in that game, you know, from
- 6:12two um, you know, to ultimately help
- 6:15them win that game. So, just continue to
- 6:17got get better and both of them, you
- 6:19know, have a do a lot of really good
- 6:20things offensively. So, uh, all five
- 6:23guys on the floor are going to have to
- 6:24know what those guys do because, you
- 6:26know, you can't be worried about
- 6:27matchups in this game. You got to make
- 6:28sure that you get bodies on bodies. So,
- 6:30all of our guys got to know what what
- 6:32those two guys specifically do because
- 6:33the ball's going to be in their hands
- 6:34most of the game. So, we got to do a
- 6:36great job of trying to limit what they
- 6:37do.
- 6:38>> Stephen, how much do you feel like this
- 6:40rivalry's grown since you first got
- 6:41here? And do you feel like it's become
- 6:42the premier rivalry in the SEC?
- 6:45>> Yeah. um the the rivalries, you know,
- 6:48it's always been a big deal just
- 6:49because, you know, both schools um and
- 6:52and what you know, what the Iron Bowl
- 6:54was with football, right? But as as the
- 6:57as both these teams have both these
- 6:59programs have had so much success um you
- 7:02know, you look at you know from 2018
- 7:05until last year, there's been nine SEC
- 7:08championships between the two programs.
- 7:10And um you know that in itself has
- 7:13elevated this rivalry to the best one in
- 7:15our conference um in that time. You know
- 7:18the first one verse two last year at
- 7:20their place. You know no other rivalry
- 7:22can really say that in our league. So um
- 7:24it's definitely been elevated to a level
- 7:26that I don't think any of you in this
- 7:28room thought would it would ever get to.
- 7:30And uh you know I know Nate's done a
- 7:31phenomenal job in his time, but now it's
- 7:33you know my job to you know try and keep
- 7:35it in that in that area because I know
- 7:38our fans obviously um you know respect
- 7:40it, appreciate it. Um and you know it's
- 7:43been a big reason our players look
- 7:44forward to it as well. So um yeah, it's
- 7:47definitely grown into probably the best
- 7:48rivalry in this league right now.
- 7:51>> All has been banged up a couple times
- 7:53throughout the season, but when he is
- 7:55healthy and on the court, what
- 7:56challenges does he present?
- 7:57>> He just he's a Swiss Army knife. He just
- 7:59does a little bit of everything for him.
- 8:01Um, can really shoot it, he can drive it
- 8:04both directions, you know, he can drive
- 8:06it right or left. Uh, runs the offensive
- 8:08glass, makes multiple effort plays, he
- 8:10can defend. Like he's just a guy that
- 8:12just, you know, I think coach compared
- 8:14him to Herb Jones in in in a regard. So
- 8:17like that's just that's the ultimate
- 8:18compliment right there. Um, so does a
- 8:20lot of great things for him and as a
- 8:22freshman just shows tremendous maturity
- 8:24and um, you know, he's physical. um
- 8:27plays hard, makes good decisions. So um
- 8:30really really good piece for them and a
- 8:32player that's really impressed us.
- 8:34>> You and Tahad have been a part of this
- 8:36rivalry game multiple times before. What
- 8:38have you both told the other guys on the
- 8:40team about this matchup in particular?
- 8:42>> We haven't really talked about it yet
- 8:44because I haven't visited with the team
- 8:45yet. But, you know, I like today, you
- 8:47know, I'm going to tell our guys like
- 8:49this game matters, you know, to to our
- 8:51fans. And we always talk about wanting
- 8:53to do things for our fans and, you know,
- 8:55if you want to make our fans happy, you
- 8:56beat Alabama. You you know, and um so
- 9:00it, you know, it has some real
- 9:01significance, but our guys all know that
- 9:03this is a big game. Um, but, you know,
- 9:05we can't approach it like it's any
- 9:07different from, you know, games that we
- 9:09played last week. Um, but yeah, I mean,
- 9:10they they they all recognize the
- 9:12significance of it. you know, uh, they
- 9:13they they've seen it on TV. So, um, you
- 9:16know, our guys are just obviously
- 9:17excited for another another record
- 9:19sellout and, um, you know, against
- 9:22another quality opponent.
- 9:23>> Take a few more.
- 9:24>> From what you've seen off, what do you
- 9:26think Charles has brought to them since
- 9:27he's been back? And I guess how are you
- 9:28guys preparing for the uncertainty of
- 9:30whether or not he'll be able to play
- 9:31Saturday?
- 9:33Yeah, I mean he definitely brings, you
- 9:34know, a dimension defensively that, you
- 9:36know, they they needed and um, you know,
- 9:39he does a great job of blocking shots
- 9:41and not just blocking shots, but but
- 9:43altering shots and, um, you know,
- 9:45offensively he's really good role guy
- 9:47around the rim. Does a good job getting
- 9:49offensive rebounds and, you know, for us
- 9:52um, you know, we're just preparing, you
- 9:55know, as if uh, he's going to play. And
- 9:58um you know, I've probably spent too
- 10:00much time like thinking about this, but
- 10:01like man, I I kind I feel for the kid um
- 10:04in a way because like what happens
- 10:06tomorrow if like he gets denied?
- 10:10What does he do? And like that's some
- 10:13and I probably shouldn't put any like
- 10:14thought towards it, but like I hope the
- 10:16the decision makers in that room have
- 10:18like thought through that. Um cuz are we
- 10:21are we setting this kid up for failure
- 10:23by bringing him back? And you know, I'm
- 10:25almost rooting for him to be able to
- 10:26play tomorrow on Saturday because I
- 10:28don't want him to be in a situation
- 10:30where he's got to make some real
- 10:31difficult decisions if for some reason,
- 10:34you know, this new judge says, "No,
- 10:36you're not allowed to play." So, maybe
- 10:38Auburn fans are going to be upset with
- 10:39me for saying that, but I I don't know,
- 10:40man. I I have some I I feel for him a
- 10:43little bit. Um because, you know, I
- 10:46think he's in a he's in a unique
- 10:48situation. He's in a difficult
- 10:49situation. So, but for us, you know, we
- 10:52we've just been preparing as if he's
- 10:53going to play. Um because, you know,
- 10:55that's what they've had the last what is
- 10:58it, four games. Um so, we got to prepare
- 11:00as if he's going to be out there.
- 11:04>> You mentioned you mentioned at the
- 11:05Tennessee game, there were some things
- 11:06that kind of felt out of character for
- 11:08y'all. The film was going to be
- 11:10difficult to watch when y'all got back
- 11:11together as a team. What were some of
- 11:13those things? And I guess what do you
- 11:14sort of attribute some of those factors
- 11:17being together?
- 11:18>> Right. Uh, well, the first 15 minutes we
- 11:20got pushed around, which we hadn't
- 11:22really had happen to us in a while. Um,
- 11:25we've done a good job of, you know,
- 11:27being the more physical team and I
- 11:28thought Tennessee in the first 15 really
- 11:30set the tone and kind of push us around
- 11:32and, you know, ended up getting up by
- 11:3313. Um, you know, we've done a great
- 11:36job. I think we're fourth in the country
- 11:37at getting to the free throw line and,
- 11:40um, you know, we only got to the foul
- 11:41line 20 times and they got to the foul
- 11:43line 31. You know, I thought we let a
- 11:46couple drives that we had that, you
- 11:48know, went uncalled affect us being
- 11:50aggressive going to the rim. And you
- 11:52can't let that happen against a really
- 11:53physical team. Tennessee did a really
- 11:56good job of throwing sending bodies at
- 11:57us as we drove it. And um you know, as
- 12:00the game went on, as opposed to playing
- 12:01off two feet and attacking the rim, we
- 12:03we kept kicking the ball out and we got
- 12:05good looks. And I I really don't have a
- 12:08problem with, you know, a lot of the
- 12:10looks we got in the second half, but at
- 12:11some point we got to start making those
- 12:13if we're gonna take them, you know, and
- 12:15um we, you know, we had the one in
- 12:17transition where we were down four and
- 12:19kicks out to Tahad and instead like I
- 12:21would love for Keith just to go drive
- 12:23that to the rim and just force them to
- 12:24foul him like he's done all year. Um so
- 12:27I mean you we just we settled a little
- 12:29bit too much offensively. I thought
- 12:32defensively we were better than what I
- 12:33gave us credit for in the moment. Um
- 12:35that's a really physical team and
- 12:37without Apara you know they got to play
- 12:38their bigger guys which I think was you
- 12:40know a little bit of a problem for us
- 12:42and you know Carrie did a phenomenal job
- 12:44and Brown did a great job and Straa was
- 12:46in foul trouble but you know I thought
- 12:48they did a really good job and we we had
- 12:49some really silly fouls which led you
- 12:52know a to really get to the foul line
- 12:54and and take full advantage. So, I think
- 12:56some uncharacteristic shots, you know,
- 12:58from three that we should have taken to
- 13:01the basket and then some some silly
- 13:03fouls that put them ultimate at the foul
- 13:04line and they did a great job of
- 13:06converting at the free throw line.
- 13:07>> Last one right here.
- 13:08>> Going off of that, you were saying like
- 13:10don't settle for threes much. Do you
- 13:12have to kind of like really hammer that
- 13:13home when you play a team like Alabama
- 13:15who's going to take a lot of threes and
- 13:16you don't want your own offense to kind
- 13:18of kind of get lost in that? Yeah, we we
- 13:20can't get into a, you know, we can't get
- 13:23into a transition contest and we can't
- 13:25get into a three-point contest with
- 13:27Alabama. Um because, you know, that
- 13:29that's what they do really well. And
- 13:31what we do really well is attack the
- 13:33rim. So, um you know, we got to run
- 13:36opportunistically when when we have
- 13:37advantage, but when we don't have
- 13:39advantage, like we we got to run
- 13:40offense. We got to make them cover. Um
- 13:42because that's just, you know, that's
- 13:44playing in the 75 to 80 possessions is
- 13:46not that's not a strength of ours. So,
- 13:48um, we got to make smart decisions
- 13:50offensively on when to attack and when
- 13:52not to attack. And, you know, um, we got
- 13:55to attack the rim cuz that's what that's
- 13:56what we've been good at all year. And
- 13:57then, you know, when the defense, you
- 13:59know, collapses down and gives us open
- 14:01opportunities from three, we got to do a
- 14:02better job of stepping up and making
- 14:04those shots as the game goes on.
- 14:06>> All right. Thanks, coach. Thanks.
- 14:07>> Thanks, guys.
