- 3:01Speaker 2: from Lee Sterling. We've got a preview of a really
- 3:04Speaker 2: interesting game down in Provo tonight. And, of course, at 1.30,
- 3:09Speaker 2: we'll air our grievances at 1 o'clock, Colton Swan in
- 3:13Speaker 2: Coordinator's Corner. Brought to you by our friends at Mountain
- 3:16Speaker 2: Home Services. Great talking to the defensive coordinator yesterday. We
- 3:22Speaker 2: recorded that interview because, obviously, he's got better things to
- 3:25Speaker 2: do today, but, man, Colton Swann's got something cooking with
- 3:29Speaker 2: that Utah defense.
- 3:31Speaker 4: That right now.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Is among the most potent in the nation.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And I know I've belabored this point, and I've said
- 3:40Speaker 2: it before, but we have to at least show our
- 3:43Speaker 2: appreciation for it. We have to show the gratitude, or
- 3:49Speaker 2: maybe there's a better word for it, but the acknowledgement that.
- 3:51Speaker 3: This is a squad. This is a Utah football team.
- 3:56Speaker 2: That replaced both coordinators and replaced their head coach and
- 3:59Speaker 2: did not take a backward step, at least as of yet,
- 4:03Speaker 2: in a season with so much uncertainty. And they didn't
- 4:05Speaker 2: take a backward step despite losing two of last year's
- 4:10Speaker 2: five most productive defensive players. Despite losing the guy who
- 4:17Speaker 2: on paper looked like he was going to be your
- 4:18Speaker 2: best wide receiver coming into this year. I mean, there's
- 4:22Speaker 2: just a lot of reasons why it could have gone wrong,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and it hasn't. So, Utah football in action tomorrow night
- 4:31Speaker 2: against Kansas. And we've touched on it. We've danced around it.
- 4:34Speaker 2: We've talked about it a little bit. But I wanted
- 4:38Speaker 2: to give a deeper dive into what Kansas actually is.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I wanted to give a deeper dive into what this
- 4:45Speaker 2: Kansas Jayhawks team is really bringing to Rice-Eccles Stadium tomorrow night.
- 4:52Speaker 2: if there's a hidden negative to the fact that Utah
- 4:55Speaker 2: football has been as good as they are, that consistency
- 5:00Speaker 2: at least allows the opposition to know what to prepare for,
- 5:04Speaker 2: allows the opposition to take a look at it and say,
- 5:07Speaker 2: all right, I know what I'm getting from Utah.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Kansas, you don't know. You really don't.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Kansas is really difficult for me to figure out right
- 5:19Speaker 2: now because.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Statistically, they've got some nice things going on right now.
- 5:27Speaker 2: In the actual columns that matter, like points scored, not
- 5:31Speaker 2: so much. And even in games where it looks like
- 5:37Speaker 2: they're out playing the competition, they can't find a way
- 5:40Speaker 2: to win. And those are the power four games, of course.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Middle Tennessee State, they mollywhopped them. They skewed some of
- 5:47Speaker 2: their stats by smashing Middle Tennessee State. In the Big
- 5:52Speaker 2: 12 game and in the game against an SEC opponent,
- 5:55Speaker 2: the Board of War against Missouri, well, Missouri dominated them.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Kansas somehow made the game look closer than it actually was.
- 6:04Speaker 2: On the opposite side of that coin, Arizona State beats
- 6:08Speaker 2: Kansas 24-17 despite the fact that Kansas had more than
- 6:14Speaker 2: double the passing yards in the game. They outrushed the
- 6:18Speaker 2: Arizona State Sun Devils by about 60 yards. Turnovers ended
- 6:25Speaker 2: up being the doom of the Kansas Jayhawks in that
- 6:28Speaker 2: particular contest, but they outplayed in a lot of ways
- 6:33Speaker 2: Arizona State and then handed the game back to the
- 6:36Speaker 2: Sun Devils and lost 24-17. Arizona State, by the way,
- 6:46Speaker 2: is equally inconsistent. They took advantage of some mistakes by
- 6:52Speaker 2: Kansas to get their only powerful win of the year.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They got smashed by Texas A & M. They got
- 6:56Speaker 2: smashed by Baylor. So Arizona State can't beat you unless
- 7:02Speaker 2: you turn over the ball. Kansas can't win turning the
- 7:06Speaker 2: ball over that much, very obviously, because nobody can, because
- 7:10Speaker 2: it's impossible to do. And Utah's done a pretty good
- 7:15Speaker 2: job this year, knock it on wood. of taking care
- 7:18Speaker 2: of the football. If you don't afford the Kansas Jayhawks
- 7:21Speaker 2: any untoward opportunities, this should be a boat race. And
- 7:27Speaker 2: I know it's dangerous to even approach a game with
- 7:31Speaker 2: that mentality, so I hope that Utah itself, the team itself,
- 7:35Speaker 2: does not actually approach things that way. But goodness gracious,
- 7:43Speaker 2: this is a game.
- 7:46Speaker 3: That you should be able to go out.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And grab yourself a convincing victory without even playing perfect football.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Utah is 15.5-point favorites in this one, and if you
- 7:58Speaker 2: don't win by three scores, it means something went wrong.
- 8:02Speaker 2: It means that you played below the standard you have
- 8:04Speaker 2: already set through four games or that Kansas found some
- 8:08Speaker 2: secret serum and figured out something that they haven't shown
- 8:11Speaker 2: us in the last four weeks themselves. Against the power
- 8:15Speaker 2: competition that they have faced, the Kansas Jayhawks are just
- 8:19Speaker 2: not up to snuff with what Utah has been putting
- 8:24Speaker 2: on the field. And that becomes a dangerous scenario because
- 8:28Speaker 2: these players watch the film. These players look at what
- 8:33Speaker 2: Kansas has already done. These coaches have to go in
- 8:37Speaker 2: and they have to manufacture in some.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Ways for these players.
- 8:40Speaker 2: They have to manufacture a threat because, goodness, Against Missouri,
- 8:49Speaker 2: 292 passing yards given up by the Kansas Jayhawks. They
- 8:52Speaker 2: gained 174 through the air in that game. Missouri almost
- 8:57Speaker 2: rushed for 200 yards, 177 on 41 carries. So, you know,
- 9:00Speaker 2: a respectable average. Kansas held them to a respectable average. Kansas, 2.2
- 9:06Speaker 2: yards a carry.
- 9:15Speaker 3: That is abysmally bad against Missouri. And by the way,
- 9:19Speaker 3: Utah should be getting.
- 9:32Speaker 2: In that contest, had 20 carries for 23 yards.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Now, he got pushed back a bunch.
- 9:39Speaker 2: He got sacked four times, which of course sucked away
- 9:43Speaker 2: from his run totals. But I'm looking at this game,
- 9:48Speaker 2: and I'm having a hard time not just saying, Utes
- 9:51Speaker 2: by a million.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Utes by 40.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Now, we've discussed over the bye week and last week,
- 9:59Speaker 2: we've discussed. the slowdown in the third quarter and how
- 10:03Speaker 2: that can become a problematic situation. We've discussed the fact
- 10:07Speaker 2: that you've got to come out after halftime and keep
- 10:11Speaker 2: the foot on the gas pedal. We talked with Devin
- 10:14Speaker 2: Dampier about it. I didn't have an opportunity to ask
- 10:18Speaker 2: Colton Swan about that We will ask Kevin McGiven about that,
- 10:22Speaker 2: Mac G, when he joins us next time. Morgan Scali
- 10:25Speaker 2: talked about it a little bit in the press conference.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And it's just one of those things that against Kansas
- 10:32Speaker 2: it probably shouldn't kill you, but it might be the
- 10:34Speaker 2: thing that gives the Jayhawks the glimmer of hope that
- 10:37Speaker 2: they need in a night game at Rice-Eckel Stadium where
- 10:40Speaker 2: the atmosphere is going to be insane.
- 10:42Speaker 3: It's going to be raucous.
- 10:43Speaker 4: It's going to be crazy.
- 10:45Speaker 2: It's going to be a nightmare scenario for the Kansas Jayhawks.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I'm looking at all the numbers. I'm looking at the
- 10:53Speaker 2: available film, because I don't get the all 22 like
- 10:56Speaker 2: I used to. And I'm looking at this Kansas Jayhawks team,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and I'm saying, how many of your guys would even
- 11:02Speaker 2: start at the University of Utah? How many of your guys?
- 11:05Speaker 2: I mean, they've got a couple of nice defensive ends.
- 11:07Speaker 2: We had Todd Haney on the show. And he was like,
- 11:12Speaker 2: Brian Haney, excuse me. We had Brian Haney on the show.
- 11:14Speaker 2: And he talked about, you know, the hopeful draft picks.
- 11:20Speaker 2: on their defense and the guys that could be should
- 11:24Speaker 2: be more disruptive.
- 11:26Speaker 3: But right now.
- 11:28Speaker 2: If you're this Kansas Jayhawks team you are flying to
- 11:32Speaker 2: Salt Lake City today and wondering where the hope is
- 11:37Speaker 2: found wondering where your production is found wondering what you
- 11:41Speaker 2: can get done maybe You're washing that Missouri film out
- 11:48Speaker 2: of your mind with the Middle Tennessee State film and
- 11:52Speaker 2: trying to convince yourself that that version of Jayhawk football
- 11:56Speaker 2: is the real version of Jayhawk football.
- 11:57Speaker 4: I am far from convinced.
- 12:02Speaker 2: You saw in the Thursday night football game last night
- 12:06Speaker 2: a Dallas Cowboys team that has some of what the
- 12:09Speaker 2: Kansas Jayhawks are suffering from right now. It's not a
- 12:12Speaker 2: lack of talent. There's great athletes on this Kansas football team.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I don't think it's even poor coaching. I think it's
- 12:20Speaker 2: an internal want to. It's a drive issue. It's are
- 12:25Speaker 2: you running to the football? Are you getting off of blocks?
- 12:29Speaker 2: Are you finding a way to keep the drive alive?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Are you committing these penalties? Is your focus where it
- 12:36Speaker 2: needs to be? And all of these things, right, there's
- 12:40Speaker 2: a mirror image of this when we're talking about Utah
- 12:42Speaker 2: football because they have done those things before. those necessary
- 12:45Speaker 2: things so far in the season. They're starting to feel
- 12:49Speaker 2: the pressure that comes with being a number 12 ranked team.
- 12:51Speaker 2: They're starting to feel the expectation of a fan base
- 12:55Speaker 2: that came into the year with a lot of question
- 12:57Speaker 2: marks and a lot of I wonders, and now is
- 13:01Speaker 2: just unabashedly, and I'm trying to temper it, but I
- 13:04Speaker 2: also can't, unabashedly saying like, yeah, it is now Big
- 13:08Speaker 2: 12 championship or bust. The predictive markets say that you've
- 13:13Speaker 2: got as good a chance as anybody. BYU has got
- 13:16Speaker 2: these injuries racking up. And the excuses that exist for
- 13:20Speaker 2: every other team are absent for the University of Utah.
- 13:23Speaker 2: And the excuses that you had coming into the year that, again,
- 13:26Speaker 2: we were making for them, they were never going to
- 13:28Speaker 2: make for themselves, are fading out of people's minds. Because
- 13:32Speaker 2: what we've seen through four games and what we're seeing
- 13:35Speaker 2: from the off-the-field stuff and what we're hearing from the
- 13:38Speaker 2: coaching staff and what we're hearing from the players is
- 13:41Speaker 2: like this self-possessed confidence that is– Far from unrealistic, it's fantastic.
- 13:49Speaker 2: This looks like a veteran team, even when they're not
- 13:52Speaker 2: that veteran. This looks like a team full of guys
- 13:55Speaker 2: who've been high-level, every-down starters for three, four years, even
- 14:00Speaker 2: though that's not the case with a lot of these individuals.
- 14:03Speaker 2: And it all starts from the quarterback position, where I
- 14:07Speaker 2: think you're completely on the opposite end of the spectrum
- 14:10Speaker 2: of where this team was a few years ago, where
- 14:13Speaker 2: you're like, you know what? Come hell or high water,
- 14:15Speaker 2: we're going to be okay with the quarterback. Devin Dampier
- 14:21Speaker 2: is going to make us right. Bert Ficklin failing Devin
- 14:24Speaker 2: Dampier's health is going to make us right. And it's this,
- 14:29Speaker 2: you know, Morgan Scali deserves a ton of credit. It's
- 14:31Speaker 2: this sort of pervasive confidence that goes all the way
- 14:36Speaker 2: down to the lowest level of the team.
- 14:39Speaker 4: And I'll tell you, that is one thing.
- 14:43Speaker 2: That I think has separated the great teams in Utah
- 14:47Speaker 2: football history from the good teams in Utah football history.
- 14:49Speaker 2: And I don't want to put undue pressure on this
- 14:52Speaker 2: year's squad, but that awareness, that assuredness that, hey, even
- 15:00Speaker 2: the guy who's fourth on the depth chart right now
- 15:03Speaker 2: knows his responsibility.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Even the guy who knows he's not going to get.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Into a game this season because he's They don't have
- 15:11Speaker 2: red shirts anymore. But he's so far down the depth
- 15:14Speaker 2: chart that he knows his duty to this squad is
- 15:18Speaker 2: scout team looks, right? The confidence trickles all the way
- 15:26Speaker 2: down to those types of individuals. The body language on
- 15:31Speaker 2: the sideline, the self-belief, the positive talk, the shrugging off
- 15:37Speaker 2: any issue. The laughing at, rather than feeling defensive about,
- 15:42Speaker 2: but the laughing at the concerns expressed by other people
- 15:46Speaker 2: or the flaws, the quote-unquote flaws that are being pointed
- 15:50Speaker 2: out and the fact that this team is just like, okay, yeah, well,
- 15:52Speaker 2: only thing we can do is play. And that's what
- 15:56Speaker 2: they're doing right now. And they've got the number one
- 15:58Speaker 2: scoring offense in the Big 12. They've got the number
- 16:01Speaker 2: one scoring defense in the Big 12. They're hosting a
- 16:03Speaker 2: Kansas team this week that has– skewed its numbers on
- 16:09Speaker 2: the positive front from last week to be middle.
- 16:12Speaker 4: Of the road in the conference.
- 16:16Speaker 2: If you're a utah fan on a friday there are
- 16:20Speaker 2: going to be games where i caution you against this
- 16:22Speaker 2: all right there are going to be games where i
- 16:24Speaker 2: tell you absolutely do not feel this way but i
- 16:29Speaker 2: am i am maybe more confident in utah winning and
- 16:34Speaker 2: covering in this game than i've been about utah winning
- 16:37Speaker 2: or covering in any game in the last three years
- 16:40Speaker 2: and i i'm knocking on my own forehead because i
- 16:43Speaker 2: don't want to curse anything here like this is the
- 16:46Speaker 2: exact kind of mentality that the team itself cannot have
- 16:50Speaker 2: but white out kind of fresh new thing fancy helmets
- 16:57Speaker 2: uh by the way the the exclusive drops from some
- 17:00Speaker 2: of these gear providers.
- 17:02Speaker 4: We saw the hats.
- 17:03Speaker 3: If you, if you follow me on Instagram or on social, you.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Saw the hats that were, that were dropped yesterday that
- 17:09Speaker 2: coincidentally matched the iced out helmets that they're wearing for
- 17:13Speaker 2: this Kansas game, uh, sold out in 30 seconds. And
- 17:18Speaker 2: then the pre-order that was the, the stock actually in
- 17:20Speaker 2: hand sold out in 30 seconds. And then the pre-order for, uh,
- 17:25Speaker 2: that they released after that, gone in less than 20
- 17:29Speaker 2: minutes after. So the Ute fans, I think justifiably so
- 17:35Speaker 2: in this particular weekend, are probably as concerned or more
- 17:39Speaker 2: concerned about the atmosphere and the wardrobe than they are
- 17:42Speaker 2: about what's going to happen.
- 17:43Speaker 4: On the field.
- 17:44Speaker 3: And there's going to be games where you can't feel
- 17:46Speaker 3: that way.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And maybe I'll have to eat crow, but I just
- 17:50Speaker 2: have an incredible amount of confidence in this team right
- 17:53Speaker 2: now because of The comparative, because of what we're seeing,
- 17:56Speaker 2: because of the consistency and the high-level stuff we're seeing
- 18:00Speaker 2: from Utah and the absence of that from Kansas. And
- 18:05Speaker 2: perhaps the most important of all of it, and one
- 18:08Speaker 2: of the things that's going to separate, again, a quality
- 18:11Speaker 2: team from a bad team or a good team from
- 18:16Speaker 2: just an okay team, or more importantly, what Utah wants
- 18:18Speaker 2: this year, a great team from a good team, is
- 18:21Speaker 2: the lack of self-inflicted wounds. I mean, Utah flirted with
- 18:27Speaker 2: being a great team last year. Utah was a win away,
- 18:31Speaker 2: not two wins, a win away from being one of
- 18:34Speaker 2: the all-time best Utah football teams. Now, they're going to
- 18:38Speaker 2: be talked about as like an honorable mention. They're going
- 18:40Speaker 2: to be given some credit. And we're going to look
- 18:43Speaker 2: back on the 2025 season. I think it's going to
- 18:47Speaker 2: age well. But had it not been for self-inflicted wounds
- 18:54Speaker 2: in that particular season, We're talking about a special year.
- 19:00Speaker 2: We're talking about a year that goes in the annals
- 19:03Speaker 2: of Utah football history alongside the Pac-12 championship years and
- 19:08Speaker 2: goes alongside the.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Fiesta Bowl and the Sugar Bowl.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I mean, it still might be a top five season
- 19:16Speaker 2: in Utah football history, but without self-inflicted wounds in the
- 19:22Speaker 2: Texas Tech game in the fourth quarter, in the BYU
- 19:25Speaker 2: game especially, We're talking about that being like a truly
- 19:29Speaker 2: remarkable season. And maybe you go to the Big 12
- 19:32Speaker 2: championship game and you lose to Texas Tech, and it's
- 19:35Speaker 2: still never going to get elevated onto that same level
- 19:38Speaker 2: as some of the all-time great seasons. But this year,
- 19:42Speaker 2: the lack of self-inflicted wounds is probably the greatest triumph
- 19:45Speaker 2: of a coaching staff that is by and large new.
- 19:51Speaker 2: because again these are the built-in excuses you give to
- 19:55Speaker 2: a new head coach new coordinators new position coaches right
- 19:59Speaker 2: ah they're still getting some things dialed in they're here
- 20:01Speaker 2: establishing the culture they got to figure out this that
- 20:05Speaker 2: the other thing and so you're going to have some
- 20:07Speaker 2: false start penalties and and a couple of drives are
- 20:10Speaker 2: going to get killed with procedure-type issues, and there's going
- 20:14Speaker 2: to be communication breakdowns because everyone's still getting used to
- 20:18Speaker 2: each other.
- 20:21Speaker 4: The absence of those explanations.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Or excuses in the first four games of the season, when,
- 20:27Speaker 2: of course, the first four games of the season is
- 20:30Speaker 2: exactly when that stuff is going to show itself, right? Now,
- 20:33Speaker 2: if it does, after you've had four games and a
- 20:36Speaker 2: bye week, now... We're going to get really mad. Now
- 20:40Speaker 2: we're going to be vindicated or justified in feeling upset
- 20:46Speaker 2: about something like that. For the first four games, you
- 20:48Speaker 2: kind of would have had to accept it.
- 20:50Speaker 3: But we didn't. You didn't have to swallow that. Utah
- 20:55Speaker 3: played clean football in four games.
- 20:59Speaker 2: And I was hesitant to even come on with this
- 21:01Speaker 2: tone to start the show today because, I mean... It's
- 21:06Speaker 2: easy in today's era. Anything you say, all of our
- 21:09Speaker 2: shows are on the Internet, right? And you can pull receipts.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Kansas fans, Kansas Jayhawks fans, if they wanted to, if
- 21:15Speaker 2: I'm wrong about any of this, could go back and
- 21:17Speaker 2: they could pull segments and they could tweet it at
- 21:20Speaker 2: me ad nauseum, ad infinitum, and I would just have
- 21:24Speaker 2: to eat that crow. But I'm looking at a Kansas
- 21:28Speaker 2: team that does all the things. Lance Leipold is a
- 21:31Speaker 2: good coach, and he's been there a while. And, yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 2: he's got– Kotelnicki is back, and so there's some readjustment
- 21:37Speaker 2: potentially in that play calling. But, like, Kansas is dealing
- 21:42Speaker 2: with some of the procedural issues and some of the
- 21:45Speaker 2: penalties and some of the turnovers and some of the
- 21:47Speaker 2: miscues and some of the self-inflicted wounds that, on paper,
- 21:52Speaker 2: heading into the 2026 season, we might have expected Utah
- 21:55Speaker 2: to have to weather. We might have expected Utah to
- 21:59Speaker 2: have to, like, deal with those things.
- 22:02Speaker 3: But here we are.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Utah's 4-0, the number 12 team in the country. Kansas
- 22:09Speaker 2: is coming in 2-2. We have our first visitor that's
- 22:16Speaker 2: going to claim a couple of these tickets. She's at
- 22:19Speaker 2: Smith's Marketplace to grab some Pepsi products. I actually appreciate,
- 22:25Speaker 2: this is now the second time in a row that
- 22:28Speaker 2: this has happened. We have people come to the table,
- 22:31Speaker 2: and by the way, We're at Smith's Marketplace out in Daybreak,
- 22:34Speaker 2: 5448 West Daybreak Parkway, way out here almost against the
- 22:38Speaker 2: Oakers on the west side of the Mountain View Corridor.
- 22:40Speaker 3: A beautiful new Smith's Marketplace.
- 22:43Speaker 2: We have two pairs of Utah versus Kansas tickets to
- 22:47Speaker 2: give away.
- 22:48Speaker 3: And just like at.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Our last Smith's Marketplace remote, our first visitor walks up
- 22:52Speaker 2: to the table and says, hey, do you still have
- 22:53Speaker 2: the tickets?
- 22:55Speaker 3: Because if you do, I'm about to go load up
- 22:57Speaker 3: on Pepsi products. And guess what?
- 22:59Speaker 2: We have both pair currently. One is about to be claimed.
- 23:04Speaker 2: That means if you're going to get out here, you
- 23:07Speaker 2: better get out here now. You've got to buy $ 35
- 23:10Speaker 2: in Pepsi products. These tickets are courtesy of our friends
- 23:13Speaker 2: at Pepsi, and we will give you a pair of tickets.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Even if you come out after the tickets are gone,
- 23:19Speaker 2: we do have Smith's gift cards.
- 23:21Speaker 3: We have home show tickets.
- 23:23Speaker 2: We also have Smith's tailgate passes, which, by the way,
- 23:27Speaker 2: such an underrated prize, an underrated giveaway. The Smith's Ultimate Tailgate,
- 23:35Speaker 2: across the street from Rice Echo Stadium every weekend, you've
- 23:39Speaker 2: got four food options in there. You've got unlimited beverages,
- 23:44Speaker 2: and you don't even have to.
- 23:44Speaker 4: Like, order them from someone. You just walk up, there's
- 23:47Speaker 4: coolers everywhere, and you grab, like, what is this thing?
- 23:50Speaker 3: I'm not joking.
- 23:51Speaker 2: There were things in there. last week that I didn't
- 23:53Speaker 2: even know existed. There were flavors of Mountain Dew that
- 23:56Speaker 2: I have not yet experienced. They got Celsius energy drinks.
- 23:59Speaker 2: They have everything there at the Smith's tailgate experience. And
- 24:03Speaker 2: we have tailgate passes to give away. It's you plus
- 24:07Speaker 2: three for every one of.
- 24:10Speaker 3: These little tickets.
- 24:11Speaker 2: So it's admission for four into the ultimate tailgate experience.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Even if you don't plan on going to the game,
- 24:19Speaker 2: just come have dinner with us.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Come hang out.
- 24:22Speaker 2: An hour or two before the game, grab some free food,
- 24:25Speaker 2: grab some great beverages, absorb.
- 24:26Speaker 4: The atmosphere, hang out with your fellow Utes, and then
- 24:30Speaker 4: go back and watch it.
- 24:31Speaker 3: At home if you don't want to go into Rice-Eccles Stadium.
- 24:34Speaker 2: But you can also hit the double whammy because we've
- 24:37Speaker 2: got giveaways right here, right now, on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 24:40Speaker 3: 5448 West, Daybreak Parkway.
- 24:46Speaker 2: The Smith's Marketplace, and we are over next to the
- 24:49Speaker 2: Starbucks inside. We're right next to the delicatessen sign. There
- 24:54Speaker 2: are chips and pretzels and beverages and fresh produce and
- 25:01Speaker 2: everything you need to get yourself ready for a tailgate or,
- 25:05Speaker 2: of course, a home watch party as Utah takes on
- 25:09Speaker 2: Kansas at 8.15 p.m.
- 25:11Speaker 4: Tomorrow night.
- 25:12Speaker 2: The Kansas Jayhawks are ripe for the plucking. This should
- 25:17Speaker 2: be the kind of game where Utah, 12th in the
- 25:21Speaker 2: country right now, with a 3-4 score win, starts to
- 25:26Speaker 2: really flirt with, hey, we're a top-10 team. Because we're
- 25:32Speaker 2: getting to the time of year where the attrition is
- 25:34Speaker 2: piling up, where there are some teams, even teams ranked
- 25:37Speaker 2: above Utah, that have injury problems, that have play-calling issues,
- 25:44Speaker 2: that have some inconsistencies showing.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I mean, I'm getting out over my skis, and I
- 25:48Speaker 3: hate doing that. I'm getting ahead of myself here, and
- 25:51Speaker 3: I hate doing that because Utah is entering the meat
- 25:54Speaker 3: of their schedule, the tough part.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Of their schedule after this week. But I don't think
- 25:58Speaker 2: it starts this week. Kansas has athletes who are right
- 26:03Speaker 2: now making mental errors, not hustling to the ball on defense,
- 26:08Speaker 2: dropping things on offense, missing assignments, communicating poorly with one another,
- 26:13Speaker 2: bad body language. And I don't think that got fixed
- 26:17Speaker 2: against Middle Tennessee State. 55-0 against a mid-major is certainly
- 26:23Speaker 2: going to be helpful for the Jayhawks.
- 26:26Speaker 3: But watch the Missouri recap. Watch the Arizona State recap.
- 26:32Speaker 3: They should have won that Arizona State game. They should
- 26:34Speaker 3: have run away with that Arizona State game. They stalled
- 26:38Speaker 3: out their own drives. They gave the ball back to
- 26:40Speaker 3: the Sun Devils. And the Sun Devils, who are not
- 26:42Speaker 3: good this year, survived it. And scored one more touchdown
- 26:47Speaker 3: than the Jayhawks did. I think this is a big
- 26:53Speaker 3: win for the Utes.
- 26:57Speaker 2: We'll get to some of your predictions as the show progresses.
- 26:59Speaker 2: If you want to text in, 877-353-0700. Even if you
- 27:03Speaker 2: want to tell me to shut up and not curse
- 27:05Speaker 2: this team, I just want to hear from you. I'd
- 27:08Speaker 2: like to see you in person out here at daybreak
- 27:10Speaker 2: at the Smith's Marketplace. And if you come out, I'll
- 27:14Speaker 2: say I'm going to.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Cynthia is my tech out here. We'll figure it out.
- 27:19Speaker 3: I think.
- 27:22Speaker 2: If they make it out in the next 20 minutes,
- 27:25Speaker 2: you probably have a chance at the tickets. If you're
- 27:28Speaker 2: not here by 11.48 a.m.
- 27:30Speaker 3: I'm going to guess that these tickets are gone. So
- 27:33Speaker 3: come see us.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Bill Riley, voice of the Utes, joins me next. We're
- 27:37Speaker 2: rolling on a Friday. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on
- 27:39Speaker 2: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 27:39Speaker 3: We'll be right back.
- 27:47Speaker 5: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 27:50Speaker 5: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Oh, like a WWE.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Star or a UFC star, when you hear that music,
- 28:06Speaker 2: you know who's marching in, and that is, of course,
- 28:08Speaker 2: my next guest, the voice of the Utes, Bill Riley,
- 28:12Speaker 2: who joins us on a Friday to preview Utah vs.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Kansas. Bill Riley, welcome to the show.
- 28:18Speaker 3: How are you, sir?
- 28:19Speaker 8: Just once, I'd like Jim Ross to say, wait a minute.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Is that you, too? Is that Bill Riley's music?
- 28:29Speaker 2: Oh, my God! It's Bill Riley's music!
- 28:35Speaker 3: Oh, you know what?
- 28:36Speaker 2: That's giving me terrible mental pictures of what strange WWE
- 28:41Speaker 2: tights you'd be wearing marching out on the ramp, so...
- 28:44Speaker 2: We're going to get away from that idea.
- 28:46Speaker 8: I'd probably sport a Randy Macho Man Savage boa as
- 28:50Speaker 8: I was coming down the ramp. Maybe some of those sunglasses.
- 28:54Speaker 3: Perfect. Bill, we saw one another at the UFC fights
- 29:00Speaker 3: the other night.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Is that your first rodeo?
- 29:05Speaker 3: You've been to a couple before. How did you like
- 29:08Speaker 3: Saturday night?
- 29:09Speaker 8: I liked the last UFC you and I were together
- 29:13Speaker 8: at a little bit. I enjoyed myself. I had a
- 29:15Speaker 8: great time. I didn't think the fights were quite as
- 29:18Speaker 8: good or as entertaining this time around as they were
- 29:22Speaker 8: last time around. But I also didn't have WWE superstar
- 29:27Speaker 8: Cody Rhodes sitting next to me the last time we
- 29:30Speaker 8: were at UFC, and this time with his crazy street
- 29:34Speaker 8: fighter hair, he was sitting in front of Shelly and I.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Yeah, that was pretty coincidental, Chris.
- 29:40Speaker 2: So for people who were at the event or maybe
- 29:42Speaker 2: saw the event street fighter uh coming out and Cody
- 29:47Speaker 2: Rhodes plays Guile the Colonel Guile the character and he
- 29:51Speaker 2: was there in costume in character at the Delta Center
- 29:54Speaker 2: for some photo op or whatever, and happened to sit
- 29:57Speaker 2: right in.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Front of the voice of the youths.
- 29:58Speaker 4: Do you think he realized he too was in the
- 30:01Speaker 4: presence of a celebrity?
- 30:02Speaker 8: I don't think he did, but he was very, very
- 30:05Speaker 8: nice to us. He was outstanding, very nice, apologized for
- 30:10Speaker 8: all the ruckus he was causing, and then walked away
- 30:13Speaker 8: and said thanks for putting up with us.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Okay, nice guy.
- 30:17Speaker 2: It's good to hear that, right, when guys that are
- 30:20Speaker 2: public figures are at least cordial?
- 30:23Speaker 3: To their fans and to the people.
- 30:24Speaker 6: They have to be around.
- 30:25Speaker 4: He was great.
- 30:26Speaker 8: What did you think of the fight the other night?
- 30:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, there were a lot of one-sided affairs,
- 30:32Speaker 2: which leads for some exciting finishes, which I'm okay with.
- 30:35Speaker 2: And the main event went exactly how I thought it
- 30:37Speaker 2: was going to go from, you know, finishing or lack
- 30:40Speaker 2: of finish standpoint, but technical back and forth, not a
- 30:43Speaker 2: lot of power on either of those young ladies.
- 30:46Speaker 4: But that's fine.
- 30:46Speaker 2: You know, it's cool to have– You know, again, to
- 30:50Speaker 2: be on the map in sports. And I know that
- 30:53Speaker 2: for everyone else it's about having professional teams. But for me,
- 30:58Speaker 2: being so close to the combat sports space and knowing
- 31:01Speaker 2: that this is the fourth time in the last four
- 31:04Speaker 2: years that the UFC has decided to come to Salt
- 31:07Speaker 2: Lake City, it means that we're a sports destination for
- 31:10Speaker 2: someone like me.
- 31:12Speaker 4: Yeah, we've grown.
- 31:13Speaker 8: I mean, shoot, 25 years ago, you had never seen
- 31:15Speaker 8: anything like this. I tell people all the time, Sean,
- 31:19Speaker 8: we may not be Chicago or New York or Los Angeles,
- 31:23Speaker 8: but we are a legit big-time sports market now. The
- 31:27Speaker 8: Olympics are coming back. UFC is here every year. We've
- 31:31Speaker 8: got three, four major league sports franchises, maybe more on
- 31:34Speaker 8: the way, big-time collegiate athletics. I mean, this is a,
- 31:39Speaker 8: you know, this is just, we're in that tier just
- 31:42Speaker 8: below the Chicago's, the L.A. 's, the Miami's, the New
- 31:45Speaker 8: York's of the world when it comes to sports markets.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's where we're at, and I love it.
- 31:51Speaker 2: And you just mentioned we've got a big-time team, a
- 31:56Speaker 2: couple of big-time college sports teams right now. Let's talk
- 31:59Speaker 2: about Utah, though, taking on Kansas this weekend. Bill, I
- 32:03Speaker 2: know it's your alma mater, but I feel like, With
- 32:07Speaker 2: what we've seen in Kansas so far, they kind of
- 32:10Speaker 2: stunk out loud against the power four teams that they've
- 32:13Speaker 2: actually played. And I'm trying to figure out the right
- 32:16Speaker 2: mindset to have about that because Utah is a lot better.
- 32:20Speaker 2: But Kansas has athletes and they're well coached, or they
- 32:24Speaker 2: have a good coach. I don't know if this particular
- 32:26Speaker 2: squad is accepting that coaching all that well. I don't
- 32:30Speaker 2: know how to approach this game mentally from an expectation
- 32:33Speaker 2: standpoint because– The, like, 15-year-old in me is Utah's going
- 32:38Speaker 2: to smash these guys by 40. But it's dangerous to
- 32:42Speaker 2: have that mentality.
- 32:44Speaker 9: It is.
- 32:44Speaker 8: And let me say this, though, Sean.
- 32:47Speaker 9: You're right.
- 32:47Speaker 8: Kansas has not been good against the power four teams
- 32:50Speaker 8: in Missouri and Arizona State they've faced. They've got a
- 32:53Speaker 8: young-ish quarterback who's only started five games. Utah saw him
- 32:57Speaker 8: kind of as a wildcat sub last year. He's getting
- 33:00Speaker 8: a little bit better. I'll tell you what they do have, though,
- 33:02Speaker 8: is they've got good lines of scrimmage. The offensive line
- 33:06Speaker 8: is good, and the defensive line's got a couple of them.
- 33:09Speaker 8: One guy in particular, Leroy Harris, will probably play on Sundays.
- 33:13Speaker 8: So they're pretty good in the trenches. In fact, from
- 33:16Speaker 8: a trench standpoint, they might be the best team Utah
- 33:19Speaker 8: has faced so far, maybe even better than Arkansas. So
- 33:22Speaker 8: I'm not sure what to make of this game. You're right,
- 33:24Speaker 8: on paper, Utah looks like they're better. But Kansas also
- 33:28Speaker 8: has some skill guys, too. They've got a couple of
- 33:30Speaker 8: wide receivers who are pretty good. They've got Dylan Edwards,
- 33:33Speaker 8: who's a good running back. So, you know, I hesitate
- 33:37Speaker 8: to say, like, you know, like you, the fan in
- 33:39Speaker 8: you wants to say, yeah, beat them by 40. I
- 33:42Speaker 8: just conference games. The one thing that helps is Utah
- 33:45Speaker 8: coming off the bye week. and Kansas traveling west, playing
- 33:49Speaker 8: in some weather probably tomorrow night, maybe a little rain,
- 33:51Speaker 8: and then playing at a different time, maybe that helps.
- 33:54Speaker 8: I don't know, but I feel like Utah is the
- 33:57Speaker 8: better team, but there's some pieces about Kansas that could
- 34:01Speaker 8: give some problems.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and we can agree on that at the very least,
- 34:06Speaker 2: and you mentioned something interesting, you know, coming off a
- 34:09Speaker 2: bye week is supposed to help, and in so many
- 34:13Speaker 2: cases it does, but When you've got great momentum and
- 34:16Speaker 2: you don't need a bunch of rest because of obvious
- 34:18Speaker 2: injury problems, sometimes bye weeks for me are like, oh,
- 34:22Speaker 2: you interrupted our flow a little bit. And, of course,
- 34:24Speaker 2: this is Morgan Scali's first bye week, although bowl prep
- 34:28Speaker 2: is probably very similar from a coaching standpoint. And so
- 34:31Speaker 2: I'm actually really curious to see how the team comes out.
- 34:34Speaker 2: And I won't read too much into it either way,
- 34:36Speaker 2: but how the team comes out after a bye week
- 34:39Speaker 2: because the routine very obviously was working the way that
- 34:42Speaker 2: he was doing things in the first four weeks. relative
- 34:44Speaker 2: to the level of competition, of course, was obviously working.
- 34:48Speaker 2: And I wonder if he ends up being one of
- 34:50Speaker 2: those coaches who is always great after a bye week.
- 34:54Speaker 8: Well, he's really prepared. We know that. He's always got
- 34:57Speaker 8: a plan for everything. So I would guess so. To me,
- 35:01Speaker 8: there's very few times when a bye week hurts you.
- 35:05Speaker 8: I think, like, if you're really super healthy and it's
- 35:08Speaker 8: week eight and you're 7-0 and you're rolling, maybe you
- 35:11Speaker 8: don't want the bye week. But this one was early
- 35:15Speaker 8: enough on. They hadn't played a lot of great competition.
- 35:17Speaker 8: You're coming out of the bye week at home against
- 35:20Speaker 8: a team that's not great. I don't know that this
- 35:24Speaker 8: bye week is necessarily going to hurt them. Now, maybe
- 35:27Speaker 8: in three weeks you wish that you would have had
- 35:29Speaker 8: the bye week a little bit later to get some
- 35:31Speaker 8: rest or to heal up some injuries. But my guess
- 35:34Speaker 8: is tomorrow night they come out pretty dialed in and
- 35:39Speaker 8: pretty locked in on Kansas.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Whiteout at night. Weird juju with a whiteout at night, potentially.
- 35:49Speaker 2: But the fan base is really fired up over the
- 35:52Speaker 2: hand-painted helmet. They did a great job of keeping those
- 35:55Speaker 2: things kind of quiet until the actual release.
- 35:59Speaker 3: The players are fired up about it.
- 36:01Speaker 2: And obviously, this is part of what lends itself to
- 36:05Speaker 2: success in recruiting and greatness in college football right now.
- 36:09Speaker 2: You've got to give the fans and the potential players
- 36:11Speaker 2: these little these little nuggets, these little carrots that are
- 36:15Speaker 2: dangled now and then in order to get enthusiastic over
- 36:18Speaker 2: what otherwise might be, you know, just kind of a
- 36:20Speaker 2: ho-hum Big 12 game.
- 36:23Speaker 8: I do think a whiteout at night, though, could look
- 36:25Speaker 8: pretty good. The entire stadium, the lights coming down, the
- 36:29Speaker 8: darkness above and everything like that, I think it.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Could look pretty good.
- 36:32Speaker 8: I just, yeah, for the crowd's sake, I hope Mother Nature,
- 36:39Speaker 8: you know, agrees with us for most of the game
- 36:41Speaker 8: tomorrow night. I'm not sure what that's going to look
- 36:44Speaker 8: like around kickoff yet, but I think it's going to
- 36:47Speaker 8: be a great atmosphere. Night games at Rice-Eccles, 99 straight sellouts,
- 36:51Speaker 8: hand-painted helmets. I think it's going to be a great atmosphere, and,
- 36:55Speaker 8: you know, it's a Big 12 game. We haven't seen
- 36:57Speaker 8: a Big 12 game at Rice-Eccles yet this year.
- 37:01Speaker 2: You just mentioned the weather, and there is potential for,
- 37:05Speaker 2: what is it, Hurricane Rachel to start showing her.
- 37:10Speaker 2: To start showing her effects sometime tomorrow night. If that happens,
- 37:17Speaker 2: there are some teams that are equipped, there are some
- 37:19Speaker 2: offenses that are equipped to kind of just keep things
- 37:21Speaker 2: rolling the same way that they have been. Of course,
- 37:24Speaker 2: Iowa State was supposed to be bad weather, and then
- 37:26Speaker 2: it didn't end up being as bad as I think
- 37:28Speaker 2: some of the forecast showed.
- 37:30Speaker 3: If there is wild.
- 37:31Speaker 2: And wet and wind, does that affect Utah or Kansas more?
- 37:37Speaker 8: I think both teams like to run the football. I
- 37:40Speaker 8: think it probably affects Kansas maybe a little bit more.
- 37:43Speaker 8: You're on the road. You've got a young quarterback who's
- 37:45Speaker 8: never played in an atmosphere like this before. He hasn't
- 37:48Speaker 8: played a team probably quite as good, although Missouri's pretty good.
- 37:52Speaker 8: They hammered Florida good, so maybe he has. But I
- 37:56Speaker 8: think the advantage is always to the home team if
- 37:59Speaker 8: you've got weather or outstanding circumstances. But I don't know
- 38:03Speaker 8: what we're going to get just yet. I mean, he
- 38:05Speaker 8: has had the propensity to fumble a little bit and
- 38:08Speaker 8: to throw some interceptions, so maybe that works in favor
- 38:11Speaker 8: of Utah.
- 38:13Speaker 2: How good is Devin Dampier this year? I mean, when
- 38:16Speaker 2: we start to compare him with the rest of the
- 38:17Speaker 2: quarterbacks in the conference and even in the country, the
- 38:20Speaker 2: lists that are coming out are saying, you know, we
- 38:23Speaker 2: thought he'd be a top 25 quarterback. He's a top
- 38:25Speaker 2: 15 quarterback right now. And, look, there's plenty of football
- 38:28Speaker 2: left to play, but I love what we've seen from
- 38:31Speaker 2: him so far. How good is Devin Dampier relative to
- 38:35Speaker 2: his peers?
- 38:36Speaker 8: I think he's really good. I think he's a top
- 38:38Speaker 8: two or three quarterback in the Big 12 for sure
- 38:41Speaker 8: this year. I think we haven't really seen Devin have
- 38:45Speaker 8: to be Devin yet, though. Does that make sense? The
- 38:48Speaker 8: competition hasn't forced him to maybe– utilize his full skill
- 38:54Speaker 8: set yet to do those improvisations that we know he's
- 38:57Speaker 8: so very good at he hasn't had to put the
- 39:00Speaker 8: team on his shoulders for a good two minute drive
- 39:03Speaker 8: just yet he hasn't been putting i mean iowa state
- 39:06Speaker 8: stressed it just a little bit but i i think
- 39:09Speaker 8: devon's best football this year for sure sean is still
- 39:12Speaker 8: ahead of him though he's been really good so far.
- 39:15Speaker 2: How many wins is WaySean Parker worth? I'm asking this
- 39:19Speaker 2: question because, you know, BYU loses their WaySean. LJ Martin
- 39:24Speaker 2: is an even more established version of way Sean and
- 39:26Speaker 2: they they lose him for four to six weeks and
- 39:29Speaker 2: I was first of all heaven forbid but I was
- 39:32Speaker 2: thinking about what what what does it look like for
- 39:35Speaker 2: a team that's otherwise really really good really prepared if
- 39:39Speaker 2: you lose a star player like that obviously quarterback we
- 39:42Speaker 2: we know what that looks like for the University of
- 39:44Speaker 2: Utah when you lose a star quarterback from a couple
- 39:46Speaker 2: years back but A star running back, a top flight,
- 39:50Speaker 2: an all-conference caliber running back, somebody like Wayshun Parker, how
- 39:53Speaker 2: many wins is he worth?
- 39:57Speaker 8: I'd say he's probably worth two wins a year at least.
- 40:02Speaker 8: I think he, you know, especially if he has a
- 40:04Speaker 8: performance like he did against Iowa State, I think it's
- 40:06Speaker 8: probably the same case down there. I think it's a
- 40:08Speaker 8: little bit different for them down in Provo because.
- 40:12Speaker 8: I don't know that you know as much about the
- 40:14Speaker 8: backups there as you do maybe some of the guys
- 40:17Speaker 8: at Utah, like a Daniel Bray or a Steven Chavez Soto.
- 40:22Speaker 8: And I don't know that BYU has the overall weaponry
- 40:25Speaker 8: around Bear Bachmeier, although the Glasker kid looks really, really good,
- 40:30Speaker 8: that Utah has around Devin Dampier. So I would say,
- 40:34Speaker 8: you know, Ray Sean's probably worth at least two wins
- 40:38Speaker 8: a year for you. I would tell you L.J. Martin
- 40:41Speaker 8: probably overall may be a little bit more important to
- 40:44Speaker 8: what BYU does down there. That's why it's going to
- 40:46Speaker 8: be interesting tonight to see how they– and sometimes, and
- 40:50Speaker 8: we know this, Sean, sometimes a backup running back gets
- 40:52Speaker 8: an opportunity and takes off and runs with it. But
- 40:56Speaker 8: you don't know until you have to put them into
- 40:58Speaker 8: that situation.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Bill Riley is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell
- 41:02Speaker 2: Show for another couple of minutes as we get ready
- 41:04Speaker 2: for Kansas versus Utah. Coming to Rice Echo Stadium tomorrow night.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Whiteout game, 8-15 kickoff. Should be a wild and woolly
- 41:13Speaker 2: and crazy atmosphere. And I've asked you some version of
- 41:16Speaker 2: this every single week. But now that we're starting to
- 41:19Speaker 2: see some wheat separated from the chaff and the best
- 41:22Speaker 2: teams in the conference maybe separating themselves or maybe not. And,
- 41:26Speaker 2: of course, now you have to factor in some injuries
- 41:29Speaker 2: for certain squads When you're handicapping this Big 12 conference
- 41:33Speaker 2: and knowing the race and who misses who in the
- 41:36Speaker 2: regular season schedule, how accurate are a picture you think
- 41:40Speaker 2: you're putting together in your mind of the stretch run here?
- 41:44Speaker 8: I still think the top three are the top three. BYU,
- 41:48Speaker 8: Utah Tech are there. In what order, I'm not sure. Utah,
- 41:53Speaker 8: I think, has looked better overall than the other two.
- 41:56Speaker 8: But to be fair, BYU has played Arizona, who I
- 41:59Speaker 8: think is a pretty good team. Texas Tech has played Houston,
- 42:02Speaker 8: who I think is a pretty good team. I don't
- 42:03Speaker 8: think Utah's played anybody to that level yet, but I
- 42:06Speaker 8: think they've looked better overall in their season. I think
- 42:10Speaker 8: we're going to know a lot more in the next
- 42:12Speaker 8: two weeks or so. Tech doesn't look as good as
- 42:15Speaker 8: they were a year ago.
- 42:16Speaker 4: They just don't.
- 42:17Speaker 8: They look like they're pretty good defensively. They look like
- 42:20Speaker 8: they're still trying to find themselves on offense. They were
- 42:22Speaker 8: struggling with Colorado. BYU just looks like they're solid selves,
- 42:27Speaker 8: but without L.J. Martin on offense and Isaiah Glasker's a
- 42:30Speaker 8: big loss on defense too.
- 42:32Speaker 4: We'll see what happens.
- 42:33Speaker 8: I think Oklahoma State is probably better than I thought
- 42:36Speaker 8: they were before the season. I still think Arizona's really good.
- 42:40Speaker 8: I'm not sure how good Houston is. I think they're good,
- 42:44Speaker 8: but are they top 25, win the conference good? I'm
- 42:47Speaker 8: not sure about that. So I still think the top
- 42:50Speaker 8: three are the top three. and I think we'll get
- 42:53Speaker 8: better answers here in the coming weeks. But I'm not
- 42:55Speaker 8: changing anything just yet. I might put Oklahoma State. Maybe
- 42:59Speaker 8: I make it a top four with Oklahoma State as
- 43:01Speaker 8: well because they've got a road win at West Virginia,
- 43:04Speaker 8: and they've got the win over Oregon at home. They
- 43:07Speaker 8: probably have the best resume, but then they've got the
- 43:09Speaker 8: Tulsa loss. So you have to factor that in there too.
- 43:13Speaker 8: But I think Oklahoma State is probably maybe making that
- 43:17Speaker 8: top three or top four.
- 43:20Speaker 3: What are we doing with Baylor, Bill?
- 43:21Speaker 2: I'm trying to figure out what I say about the
- 43:24Speaker 2: Baylor Bears.
- 43:24Speaker 3: They're 4-1 overall.
- 43:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:27Speaker 2: They got wins over Colorado and Arizona State. I don't
- 43:30Speaker 2: think those are even– I think those might be the
- 43:32Speaker 2: two bottom teams in the conference this year. But just
- 43:35Speaker 2: like Utah, you just have to play who's in front
- 43:37Speaker 2: of you. Close loss against Auburn in the first game
- 43:40Speaker 2: of the season. So what are we making of the
- 43:42Speaker 2: Baylor Bears?
- 43:43Speaker 8: I think they're pretty good, too, Sean. I had them
- 43:46Speaker 8: as a Tier 3 team before the year. I've kind
- 43:48Speaker 8: of moved them up into my Tier 2. They just
- 43:52Speaker 8: absolutely annihilated it. I'm actually surprised ASU is where they are,
- 43:58Speaker 8: and they got beat as bad as they did last weekend.
- 44:01Speaker 8: But DJ Lagway looks like the real deal, and they're
- 44:06Speaker 8: not bad defensively either. Now, Utah doesn't have to see
- 44:09Speaker 8: them this year, so that's maybe an advantage. Utah not
- 44:11Speaker 8: having to go to Waco or have them come here.
- 44:14Speaker 8: But I think Baylor has solidified itself in that second tier,
- 44:18Speaker 8: and maybe I'm rating them low before because of where
- 44:20Speaker 8: I had them preseason. But, yeah, a two-point road loss
- 44:24Speaker 8: in the opener to not a spectacular, but a solid
- 44:27Speaker 8: Auburn team. Maybe I need to be a little bit
- 44:31Speaker 8: more dialed into Baylor.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Bill Riley for one more minute here on the Sean
- 44:35Speaker 2: O'Connell Show. I know it's football season, but basketball starts
- 44:38Speaker 2: to overlap, and we've got some exhibition examples here for
- 44:42Speaker 2: the– Running Utes, so far so good. Some flashes, some
- 44:46Speaker 2: nice things. Obviously newcomers and players that you want to
- 44:48Speaker 2: see develop even more, but early returns, what are your
- 44:52Speaker 2: initial thoughts on Alex Jensen's squad?
- 44:56Speaker 8: I think so far so good. I've watched him practice
- 44:59Speaker 8: a few times. It was interesting to see their effort
- 45:02Speaker 8: the other night against UNLV when you're actually playing somebody else.
- 45:06Speaker 8: They led the entire game, Sean. They led start to
- 45:09Speaker 8: finish the other night. Vegas made it a little close
- 45:11Speaker 8: in the second half, but I think.
- 45:13Speaker 3: It's a good start.
- 45:14Speaker 8: I think they're certainly bigger and more physical up front.
- 45:18Speaker 8: I just, I like what I've seen so far from them.
- 45:21Speaker 8: And I like the fact that they've got three exhibition games.
- 45:23Speaker 8: You know, they're going to play, they played UNLV. They're
- 45:26Speaker 8: going to play Nevada next week on the road. And
- 45:29Speaker 8: then they'll finish up their exhibitions. These college basketball has
- 45:32Speaker 8: become pro basketball. Now there's exhibitions and not secret scrimmages anymore.
- 45:36Speaker 8: Then they'll have Oregon at home. So I, I think
- 45:39Speaker 8: we'll– and I talked to Martin Schiller. I ran into
- 45:41Speaker 8: him yesterday on campus, the assistant coach, and I think
- 45:44Speaker 8: they were overall pretty pleased with how the first exhibition
- 45:47Speaker 8: game went. So it's still, you know, again, you've got 10,
- 45:50Speaker 8: 11 new guys on the team, so you're still figuring
- 45:53Speaker 8: out– Alex and his staff are figuring out rotations and
- 45:56Speaker 8: things like that. But I think it's easier to do
- 45:59Speaker 8: that in a game situation, exhibition game situation, than it
- 46:03Speaker 8: is maybe in practice. Again, early returns, one exhibition game,
- 46:08Speaker 8: and I've seen them at practice. I think the product
- 46:10Speaker 8: is going to be a lot better this year than
- 46:12Speaker 8: it was last year.
- 46:14Speaker 2: I should probably already know this. Does the voice of
- 46:18Speaker 2: the Utes adhere to the fan and team dress code
- 46:22Speaker 2: on a night whiteout?
- 46:26Speaker 8: I don't usually think about it, but tomorrow night maybe
- 46:29Speaker 8: I'll go with the– the black pan, the black slacks
- 46:33Speaker 8: and the white top, or maybe I'll just go with
- 46:35Speaker 8: the all white look to it. Maybe I'll, I'll see
- 46:37Speaker 8: if I can, you know, find a good humor man
- 46:40Speaker 8: and maybe, you know, borrow his uniform and slap a
- 46:43Speaker 8: Utah logo on the chest or something like that. I don't, yeah,
- 46:47Speaker 8: but yeah, I hadn't given it much thought because, you know,
- 46:50Speaker 8: I'm not really out and among the folks in the stands,
- 46:53Speaker 8: but maybe I'll throw a little all white on tomorrow night.
- 46:56Speaker 8: What about you and the media core?
- 46:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I always find myself, because, you know, we're the
- 47:01Speaker 3: home of the Utes, and when.
- 47:02Speaker 2: You're a media member, when you're on a press pass, you're,
- 47:08Speaker 2: I guess, technically not supposed to be wearing, like, Utah gear,
- 47:11Speaker 2: but I do every game because, you know, we're the
- 47:14Speaker 2: home of the Utes. So, yeah, I think I'll have
- 47:17Speaker 2: to do my best to find, well, I don't look.
- 47:20Speaker 4: Great in white.
- 47:22Speaker 2: You know, black is more slimming, but I'll figure something
- 47:24Speaker 2: out to try to join the crowd.
- 47:27Speaker 8: By the way, you're plugged into the world. What were
- 47:31Speaker 8: the returns on UFC? Were Dana and his guys happy
- 47:35Speaker 8: with their appearance in Salt Lake City?
- 47:38Speaker 4: They were.
- 47:39Speaker 2: There was some, like that Peyton Talbot kid that you
- 47:42Speaker 2: saw in the co-main event. He's really put himself in
- 47:47Speaker 2: the conversation for a title shot sooner than later. They
- 47:51Speaker 2: figured out some of the things they were hoping to
- 47:53Speaker 2: figure out with that card. The The main event being
- 47:57Speaker 2: a title fight when neither of them, it was a
- 48:01Speaker 2: vacated title, so it was a little anticlimactic. Nobody had
- 48:04Speaker 2: to beat the current champ in order to win that.
- 48:06Speaker 2: But Natalia Silva said she wants to remain very active
- 48:09Speaker 2: and defend even one more time this year and then
- 48:12Speaker 2: three times next year. So they always love hearing stuff
- 48:15Speaker 2: like that. We get kind of the point we were
- 48:20Speaker 2: making before. We get a lot of praise as a
- 48:23Speaker 2: general sports and fan public when events like the UFC
- 48:28Speaker 2: come to town because they were happy with the support,
- 48:32Speaker 2: with the merchandise sales, with all that stuff.
- 48:34Speaker 4: And I think.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Barring any big surprises, I think that it means they'll
- 48:40Speaker 2: come back sooner than later.
- 48:42Speaker 8: Yeah, that's what I was more concerned about, the ticket sales,
- 48:45Speaker 8: the way it went off. The crowd seemed good. There's
- 48:47Speaker 8: always empty seats, but the crowd seemed pretty good, especially.
- 48:51Speaker 8: And you tell me, I didn't feel like there was
- 48:52Speaker 8: a big, you know, the main event, as you said,
- 48:54Speaker 8: but it didn't feel like, you know, there was a big,
- 48:57Speaker 8: there wasn't a Gaethje or somebody like that on the
- 49:00Speaker 8: card that, you know, is really a household name that
- 49:02Speaker 8: might have brought some more people in.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that turnout for that card. is probably
- 49:07Speaker 2: better than what they deserved, if we're being honest. If
- 49:11Speaker 2: it was that card in Vegas, their returns would have
- 49:15Speaker 2: been poor. But because it was Salt Lake and you know, people,
- 49:18Speaker 2: it's still a novelty for some folks. And, you know,
- 49:21Speaker 2: people come in from Idaho and Wyoming and all that
- 49:23Speaker 2: stuff all the time.
- 49:24Speaker 4: It was a good turnout, good crowd.
- 49:27Speaker 9: Excellent.
- 49:29Speaker 8: I'll look forward to seeing what the fit looks like
- 49:32Speaker 8: tomorrow night, John.

- 55:04Speaker 2: the tickets yes we do Within 30 seconds.
- 55:08Speaker 3: Still got the tickets? Still got the tickets?
- 55:10Speaker 5: Yes.
- 55:11Speaker 2: But it's whoever can bring that Pepsi receipt back and
- 55:14Speaker 2: show that you made your purchases. So they went running
- 55:19Speaker 2: through the store, stocked up on the Pepsi products, and
- 55:24Speaker 2: who won the race?
- 55:26Speaker 4: Chad.
- 55:26Speaker 3: Chad. Like, by a hair. I mean, it was pushing
- 55:31Speaker 3: one cart in front of the other like they were
- 55:33Speaker 3: in line.
- 55:33Speaker 4: It was incredible.
- 55:35Speaker 3: So that's what you're up against.
- 55:37Speaker 4: All right.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Next week, or next home game, when we're on remote
- 55:41Speaker 2: at Smith's, we'll have some tickets to give away. And
- 55:44Speaker 2: you've got to get here in the first hour, and
- 55:47Speaker 2: you're going to have to hustle. Shout out to Cynthia
- 55:52Speaker 2: for handling that while I was still on air and
- 55:55Speaker 2: making it so I didn't have to worry about it.
- 55:57Speaker 4: All right.
- 55:58Speaker 2: Injury update brought to you by the Advocates Injury Attorneys.
- 56:02Speaker 3: Injured in an accident or otherwise. Curious if you have
- 56:04Speaker 3: a case?
- 56:05Speaker 2: Call the Advocates at 801-355-5550. You deserve an advocate. And look,
- 56:12Speaker 2: we have to shout out the Advocates. AdvocatesUtah.com or 801-355-5550.
- 56:19Speaker 2: I understand that there are a lot of people out
- 56:20Speaker 2: there who are listening to something like this, and they're saying, like,
- 56:23Speaker 2: I don't really know what to do if I've been
- 56:25Speaker 2: in that car accident, and I thought I was fine,
- 56:28Speaker 2: but it's been a month, and my neck still hurts,
- 56:30Speaker 2: or I'm really having this problem with my knee or
- 56:33Speaker 2: my shoulder, and I think that's where it came from.
- 56:35Speaker 2: And the insurance company doesn't want to help me out,
- 56:38Speaker 2: and the person I was in the accident with, their
- 56:40Speaker 2: insurance company doesn't want.
- 56:41Speaker 3: To help me out.
- 56:43Speaker 2: Just pick up the phone and call 801-355-5550. You don't
- 56:44Speaker 2: come out of pocket, all right? The advocates are going
- 56:50Speaker 2: to let you know whether you have a case. They're
- 56:51Speaker 2: going to get all the details. They're going to decide, hey,
- 56:54Speaker 2: we can partner on this. And you don't pay us
- 56:57Speaker 2: until we pay you. That's how it works with the advocates.
- 57:01Speaker 2: If they get you the settlement that you need or
- 57:02Speaker 2: you deserve, they take their cut.
- 57:05Speaker 3: They earn that. If they don't win the case, you
- 57:09Speaker 3: don't pay.
- 57:09Speaker 4: 801-355-5550.
- 57:12Speaker 2: You didn't deserve to be in an accident, but you
- 57:15Speaker 2: do deserve an advocate working for you and making sure
- 57:18Speaker 2: That the pain, the suffering, the loss of income from
- 57:21Speaker 2: having to miss work, that you get taken care of
- 57:24Speaker 2: for that.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Two players on the Utes injury report. Canai Lopez, out.
- 57:31Speaker 3: Ike Garcia, out.
- 57:34Speaker 2: We talked about Semih Talonga and Carson Kalfusi both being
- 57:38Speaker 2: on the injury report as questionable. No longer on the
- 57:43Speaker 2: injury report. A game tonight that Begrudgingly or not, you
- 57:48Speaker 2: should be watching, as BYU hosts Iowa State, Raider Damuni
- 57:54Speaker 2: and Cannon DeVries. DeVries has been really good for them,
- 57:58Speaker 2: by the way. Punt returner, defensive back, he's been awesome.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Cannon DeVries has been downgraded. Raider Damuni has been downgraded
- 58:06Speaker 2: from doubtful to out. DeVries went from probable to questionable,
- 58:12Speaker 2: then doubtful. So that's tough because... He serves two roles
- 58:18Speaker 2: for that BYU football team. And I think the more
- 58:22Speaker 2: impactful one is he's an excellent return man. And obviously
- 58:26Speaker 2: last year's return man in a really good year for
- 58:29Speaker 2: BYU is no longer on the team. So you're going
- 58:33Speaker 2: down to number three in the punt return hierarchy, so
- 58:37Speaker 2: to speak. There'll be another report that comes out right
- 58:41Speaker 2: before kickoff tonight. But BYU having some bad luck right
- 58:45Speaker 2: now with the injuries and the social media conversation around this,
- 58:50Speaker 2: by the way, has already ramped up between the Utah
- 58:52Speaker 2: contingent and the BYU contingent in a hilarious manner. And remember,
- 58:58Speaker 2: when you're talking about Twitter and you're talking about message boards,
- 59:00Speaker 2: it's always like only the the fringe five percent of
- 59:04Speaker 2: these fan bases but uh people people utah fans just
- 59:09Speaker 2: being like see now you know what it feels like
- 59:11Speaker 2: byu fans being like oh you guys don't know what
- 59:13Speaker 2: it's like to have a great team and have these
- 59:16Speaker 2: injuries pile up and that watching that conversation happen back
- 59:20Speaker 2: and forth uh if you're a ute fan don't dunk
- 59:23Speaker 2: on anybody for having injuries okay don't invite that bad
- 59:26Speaker 2: karma that bad juju onto your own team Yeah, OC,
- 59:30Speaker 2: when it comes to a team with high expectations especially,
- 59:34Speaker 2: but any football team, you are healthy until you're not.
- 59:38Speaker 2: So let's just be careful with the trash talk there.
- 59:41Speaker 2: But it is funny to see some BYU fans saying,
- 59:45Speaker 2: you don't know what it's like.
- 59:46Speaker 4: It's like, hello, two years ago.
- 59:49Speaker 2: It's like we know exactly what this feels like. And look,
- 59:53Speaker 2: it's really painful and it's really impactful and it's really damaging.
- 59:59Speaker 2: In the years where you have the high expectations, right?
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: I mean, if you think you're going to be a
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: seven-win football team and you get four important injuries over
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: the course of a season and end up being a
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: six-win football team.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: It's like, eh, okay.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: When you think you're a conference championship contender, and on
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: paper you are, and then the injuries start to pile
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: up and take you out of that conversation, it's devastating.
- 1:00:23Speaker 10: Don't even go to a bowl game like the Utes
- 1:00:25Speaker 10: in 2024?
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: I mean, it's terrible.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Not only does it It alters the course of your
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: program's history when that type of thing happens. It changes
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: the job situation for coaches, coordinators especially, when that type
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: of thing happens. I mean, you've heard me talk about
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: it before, I will die on the hill, of Andy
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Ludwig was forced out because of injuries that he had
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: zero control over. Like, because he wasn't able to to
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: magic his way into a productive offense using a second, third, fourth,
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: then fifth string quarterback.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: It's like, what are we doing here? You know?
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: And I don't think there's any danger of that happening
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: at BYU. They already lost their defensive coordinator last year.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Aaron Roderick is going to have to figure out like
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: how much he can run bear Bachmeier and still keep
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: bear Bachmeier relatively healthy. That is now the question of,
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: for Brigham Young University because the first four games of
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: the season, BYU, or excuse me, the first three games
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: of the season, BYU basically didn't design anything for Bear
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Bachmeier to run. Didn't ask him to run. And he
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: didn't have to run because they beat up everybody, including Arizona,
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: without Bear having to pull off any individual heroics in
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: the run game especially. And then last week against TCU,
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: it was like, dude, I don't know why you can't pass.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: I don't know why you finished a game with 62
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: yards through the air. I know bad weather affects things
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: like that, but I promise you there have been hundreds
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: and hundreds of wet games played in college football where
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: a quarterback goes for like 175 instead of 250, right?
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: The fact that Bear Bachmeier had 62 yards through the
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: air and they were like, all right, well, just do
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: it with your legs. and that's what got them the victory,
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: that's great that you have that player.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: It really is.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: But when it's a necessity thing that your quarterback run
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: this much, look what's happening with West Virginia. Michael Hawkins Jr.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: is already starting to show the signs of overuse. When
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: he's the guy who has to give you 200 yards
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: of rushing offense.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Or he's got to give you 100 of the 200
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: yards of rushing offense, and he's your quarterback who's got
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: to try to figure out how to dial it in
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: on the passing game, it's.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Already starting to rattle and shake a little bit.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: And that's what Aaron Roderick, who I think is totally underrated,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: he's never talked about as a quarterback developer despite what
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: he's done with his past three. I think that Aaron
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Roderick is in a really, really difficult situation right now
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: where he's got to figure out what the correct balance
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: is with letting Bear Bachmeier carry the load in the
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: run game because these next four weeks, you have to
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: somehow find not a full replacement for L.J.
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: Martin because you're not going to.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Special players, you just don't get to plug somebody else
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: in there and say, all right, now you're L.J.
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: Martin, and L.J. is special.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Bear Bachmeier, if L.J., if you account for, you know, 100,
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: 125 yards of offense out of L.J.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: Martin every single.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: Week, Now you're going to tell Bear, hey, I need
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: 65 of those from you on the ground. And he's
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: going to be more than willing, and he's physically absolutely capable,
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: but you don't get to then say, all right, well,
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Sione Moa, now you are the next best thing.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: And I think Sione Moa is an awesome player. He's
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: also gone.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: So, all right, you better hope that this Eka kid
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: and this Journey Tonga kid are everything that they showed
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: they could potentially be. That's a tough spot.
- 1:04:10Speaker 10: Yeah, thankfully for BYU, they don't really have injuries with
- 1:04:14Speaker 10: their wide receivers, so possibly that could be something. But
- 1:04:19Speaker 10: we all know this. When you are forced to be one-dimensional,
- 1:04:22Speaker 10: defenses take advantage of that. So it's going to be fascinating. OC,
- 1:04:27Speaker 10: what I wonder is, obviously not having Glasker and Martin
- 1:04:32Speaker 10: in this game and beyond with Martin, possibly beyond with Glasker,
- 1:04:38Speaker 10: those are huge blows. Those are potentially your best player
- 1:04:40Speaker 10: on both sides of the ball, if not your second
- 1:04:43Speaker 10: or third best player with Isaiah.
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: Glasker, right?
- 1:04:46Speaker 10: Now we've got Damuni and probably DeVries. Damuni's certainly out.
- 1:04:50Speaker 10: DeVries is doubtful. He's probably out as well. Does this
- 1:04:55Speaker 10: start to make you doubt the outcome of tonight's game,
- 1:04:58Speaker 10: or do you feel like they still got it against
- 1:04:59Speaker 10: Iowa State? Because that's a lot of injuries to key players.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: I said, I think, on the show yesterday, I'm now
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: expecting BYU to have a real problem and potentially lose
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: this game. I want to back off that a little bit,
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: and thank goodness I have three hours a day on
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: a microphone to really flesh these things out.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: But I think that for Iowa State.
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: To beat a team like BYU, you're not going to
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: do it with Jalen Rayner throwing the ball all over
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: the yard. Even if BYU's defensive backfield is being thinned
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: out a little bit without Damuni and maybe a limited
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: or absent DeVries, I don't believe in Jalen Rayner's arm.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: I just think he's not a good passing quarterback. I
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: think Iowa State kind of knows that. And I think
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: that they're going to try to run the ball to
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: victory at Lavelle Edwards Stadium to a certain extent. You
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: want to balance it out, obviously, but the best version
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: of Iowa State is using Aiden Flora, using Jalen Rayner's legs,
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: and figuring out if you can make BYU start to
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: cheat into the box a little bit and then set
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: up some easy throws, some slants and some intermediate routes
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: because he's not the guy who's going to drop back
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: and he's going to hit you on a 40-yard dime
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: or like a deep fade. He just doesn't have that
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: arm talent. So BYU is good against the run. They've
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: been really good against the run. And Iowa State has
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: not yet played a defense this good against the run
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: except for, Utah. And how did they run against Utah?
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: I mean, people don't like it when you say, well,
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: BYU is just as good as Utah at stopping the run.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: They're more closely comparable against the run than anyone else
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: that Iowa State has faced this year. And against Utah,
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: Iowa State was only able to put up 111 rushing yards.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Aiden Flora had 54 of those. Jalen Rayner had 27.
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: Now, Flora.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: Because Utah got ahead so fast in that game, Flora
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: was underused. And if they're smart, even if BYU jumps
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: out to a significant lead, even if BYU is 21-0
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: at half, you still have to let Aiden Flora Cook.
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: You've got to let that kid work. He is your
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: best offensive player. And this is something that is so
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: ridiculous that we get away from in college football.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: People start looking at the.
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: Clock about, I don't know, 30 minutes too early. Be like, hey,
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: we've got to score on this drive.
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: I'm going to start passing. I'm going to start passing.
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: Well, your best chance to score if you're Iowa State
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: is to give you like a 60-40 rush to pass contrast.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: And they got away from that against Utah. So Aiden
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Flora only had 13 carries against the Utes. That ended
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: up being a gift to Utah. Because would they still
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: have stopped him? Would they still have limited him well
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: below his season averages? Absolutely yes, I think so. They're
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: a better run defense than what Iowa State has been
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: able to do against these other teams. But even against Iowa,
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: who's a solid team, Aiden Flora rushed for more per average,
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: and he got 19 carries against Iowa. You've got to
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: give him 23, 24 touches in this game. You probably
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: have to let him throw a pass again. You've probably
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: got to design some direct snap stuff to him and
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: make BYU figure him out and your athletic quarterback out.
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: This is the biggest.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: Game of the weekend for the Big 12 Conference because
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: BYU is right now a flag bearer. They are right
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: now carrying the torch. They are right now the highest
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: ranked team in the conference. They are supposed to be
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: in the conference championship game according to national expectations. And
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: they're supposed to be undefeated heading into the Notre Dame
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: contest next week. If tonight goes awry, it's obviously terrible
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: for BYU. By extension, it's actually a little bit of
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: a hiccup for the Big 12 conference. and the narrative
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: around the Big 12 Conference. Now, of course, the alternative storyline,
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: if BYU falls off and Utah continues to rise, is
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: everyone just says, oh, yeah, well, it's the Utes and
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: not the Cougs that are the flag bearers and the
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: torchbearers for this conference. It's now Texas Tech and Houston
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: and Utah. even if BYU falls off a little bit. And,
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: you know, they're a good team. They're a well-coached team, BYU.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: But very few teams can survive significant injuries to star players.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: We talked about this earlier in the week when we
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: found out that L.J. Martin was going to miss significant time.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: You start looking around the country and find me how
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: many teams, there's probably six or seven teams that can
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: have a top five offensive player and a top five
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: defensive player go down and not have it affect their
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: win-loss total. I mean, nobody is that deep in college
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: football anymore. ESPN just wrote an article about the quarterback drain,
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: and thankfully for BYU, it's not an injury to the quarterback,
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: but it's your top two running backs, one of whom
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: is the best overall player on your football team, and
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: it's Isaiah Glasker, who's got NFL draft potential. They're lucky
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: because– well, they're not lucky. They're fortunate to have brought
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: in Kedu Lawave in the offseason transfer portal. You guys
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: hear me talk about him every week. You're probably sick
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: of it, but he's, I think, better than Glasker is.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: But the point stands, right? If we were talking about
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Texas Tech– It would be the same point if we
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: were talking about Utah. It would be the same point
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: if we're talking about Houston. The same thing if you're
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: talking about anybody except for Ohio State.
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: Texas, Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, Miami.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: You're talking about you can't survive losing three of your
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: top five players or two of your top ten players even.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: It's just a tough thing. And tonight is scary for BYU.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: I expect Iowa State to make this a close game if...
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: They don't panic even when falling behind because it's going
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: to be a crazy, raucous atmosphere at BYU. It's a
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: night game down there at Lavelle Edwards Stadium. Everyone's going
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: to be hyper-caffeinated and over-sugared, right? And it's one of
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: the last good-weather games you're guaranteed for the rest of
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: the year.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: They're going to show up.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: It's going to be 65,000 strong. And Iowa State is
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: walking into a really, really tough environment right But if
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: they do what they are good at, they can make
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: this a game against BYU. Iowa is on the road
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: at Washington tonight. Iowa is a ranked team. Washington is
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: a favorite here. It's top 20 Iowa versus Washington. Washington
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: are two-and-a-half point favorites in this one.
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: Florida State-Louisville is.
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: Kind of an interesting game. That's also happening tonight.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: I don't know if I want to give too much
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: credit to Wyoming and San Jose State, but there's a
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: crucial one happening in Logan as well. Utah State is
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: five and a half point favorites in a Pac-12 conference
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: contest against Washington State. Washington State has been bad. Washington
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: State has looked terrible. Utah State is also one in
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: four this year with their lone win coming against Troy.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: They look pretty good against Washington. They look pretty bad
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: against the University of Utah. They got beat up by
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: Boise State, who's the top group of six team in
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: the country. And now Utah State is in desperate need
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: of a conference win against Washington State. They are five
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: and a half point favorites. They still have a big
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: time quarterback problem. They've got a big time offensive problem.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: Their defense is going to have to win them this
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: game like they're going to have to win them pretty
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: much every game this year. But that's just your Friday
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: night slate. I mean, we are jam-packed. This is a
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: loaded-up Friday night. Top 25 matchup, or excuse me, a
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: top 20 team in Iowa matching up with a conference
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: opponent in Washington. Iowa State, who is, look, not great,
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: but at least solid against a injury-depleted BYU team in
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: a really tough spot, a potential look-ahead spot for the Cougars. and,
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: of course, Utah State also in action. It's a sweet
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: slate of college football games this weekend. We're going to
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: talk more about it with Lee Sterling, who's going to
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: join us in about 20 minutes here on the show.
- 1:13:27Speaker 10: It's the perfect night for the college football to be
- 1:13:30Speaker 10: stacked on a Friday night, too, because this is a
- 1:13:32Speaker 10: rare off day for MLB playoffs in October because most
- 1:13:36Speaker 10: of the division series are wrapped up. The only game
- 1:13:39Speaker 10: left is tomorrow night with the White Sox and Guardians
- 1:13:42Speaker 10: game five. It's not a Thursday or a Sunday, right?
- 1:13:47Speaker 10: So there's no NFL to compete with. So this is
- 1:13:50Speaker 10: great timing for college football to have this kind of
- 1:13:54Speaker 10: a loaded, for a Friday night anyway, loaded slate.
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: It should be a lot of fun.
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: And then on Saturday, Arizona-West Virginia is a really interesting game.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: That one is in Morgantown. I still think Arizona is
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: a really high-quality team. I still think West Virginia has
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: got some potential. They are hosting the Wildcats. and Arizona's
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: a three-point favorite in that one. North Carolina is always
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: going to get a little bit of attention. Pittsburgh is
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: finally in the rankings after their coach basically had to
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: shame them into the rankings. Texas A & M, Missouri,
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Indiana at Nebraska, and then when you get a little
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: bit later in the day, UCLA, Oregon, two top 25
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: teams right now.
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: Bob Chesney has things humming.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: At UCLA, Dan Lanning and Oregon are not nearly what
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: I thought they were going to be this year. This
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: is at Autzen, but Oregon's 11.5-point favorites?
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: I don't know, man.
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Stanford at Notre Dame.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: I want to give this one a shout-out because former
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Utah safety Steve Tate, his son Bo is at Stanford
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: He's a backup linebacker. He's a special teamer.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: Let's go, Bo.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: And he was named special teams captain for this one
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: in South Bend. So pretty cool. Pretty cool for the
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Tate family, who Instagram has informed me they're all headed
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: out to Notre Dame to watch this one, as you
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: should be.
- 1:15:22Speaker 10: How great would that be to have your son, you
- 1:15:24Speaker 10: go to that kind of cathedral of college football, right,
- 1:15:28Speaker 10: iconic place, and have your son. Your son playing on
- 1:15:32Speaker 10: that field.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it's pretty cool. That's really cool for that family.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: And Notre Dame is 38-and-a-half-point favorites, so that might be
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: the end of the feel-good for the Tates.
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: But at least you're there, right? Hey, classic look-ahead spot.
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: Look-ahead spot for Notre Dame also.
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: Yeah, come on now.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Because they got BYU next week, and that's an unfamiliar
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: road trip.
- 1:15:53Speaker 10: Also, rivalry game, Stanford's getting up for that every time.
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: Okay, give them a chance.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: Notre Dame-BYU, it's a rivalry game for world religions and
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: not only the teams themselves.
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: So, yeah, it's an interesting one.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Houston at Kansas State is another game this weekend that
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: I think tells us a lot more about both teams. Now,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Kansas State has come back down to earth a little
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: bit with that loss to Cincinnati. But, again, like what–
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: We're going to know by week eight what that loss
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: actually meant because we're going to know more. We're going
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: to have Cincinnati a little bit more figured out by then.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: But maybe Cincinnati is just a really good team.
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: Cincinnati right now is four and one.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Their loss coming to Arizona, and they got beat up
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: by Arizona, but there are some games, there are these
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: outlier games that as a college football player and as
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: a college football coach, you try to desperately avoid where
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: you just don't show up. That's what happened with Cincinnati.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: That wasn't Arizona just being like, we're that much better
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: than you. We are four touchdowns better than you. That
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: was Cincinnati just laying an egg. Now, maybe Arizona is
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: a better team, but they're not four touchdowns better than Cincinnati.
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: And now we've got Cincinnati and West Virginia, Cincinnati and
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: Kansas State. We've got these things to look at to
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: let us know, all right, I think this might be
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: an informative game. Kansas State, with the loss to Cincinnati,
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: kind of took themselves out of the rankings conversation, but
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: they can put themselves right back in if they can
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: beat Houston.
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: And, of course, this one is at home.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: Day game.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: For Kansas State, and Houston is not unbeatable. Houston is not,
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: you know, otherworldly. I think Houston's really good, and their
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: only loss is, if these things actually exist in college football,
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: a quality loss because they only fell to Texas Tech
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: by literally getting stopped on the last play of the game.
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: By like an inch.
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: It was, I mean, I honestly thought that if they
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: had called, if they had, The replay review, you didn't
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: really get a super solid view of Connor Wegman's legs.
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: And whether his shin was down or his knee was
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: down or whatever was down as he's reaching across the
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: goal line. The call on the field was that he
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: was short of the goal line. And I think ultimately
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: that was correct. But if for some reason the referee
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: had been focused more on the ball and not where
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: his legs were. and had said, yes, that's a score,
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: I don't think they could have overturned it. That's how
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: close it was.
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: It's so true.
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: It reminds me of, like, remember last year's Game 7
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: of the World Series where we were all like, did
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: the Blue Jays.
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: Just win the game, or was he actually out?
- 1:18:45Speaker 10: If the call on the field was that the Blue
- 1:18:48Speaker 10: Jays won the game, that he got a part of
- 1:18:52Speaker 10: the plate before he was tagged on that last play
- 1:18:56Speaker 10: of the ninth inning there, I think that the call
- 1:19:00Speaker 10: would have stood.
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: But because the call was the opposite, that's why the
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: call stood.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: It was that kind of a bang-bang play in football, too,
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: in that houston texas tech game so houston kansas state
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: interesting game just if you're a football fan but an
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: important game as the big 12 conference shuffles itself and
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: figures out who's a real contender a pretender or whatever
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: and then of course georgia alabama is i mean a
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: college football playoff preview potentially that's number two versus number
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: six in the current rankings USC's on the road at
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Beaver Stadium in a Penn State whiteout game.
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: If Penn State wins this game, na.
- 1:19:44Speaker 7: Na, na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye, Lincoln Riley.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Like, 70 million buyout or not. You cannot go and
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: lose to Penn State after already being a team that
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: people started to feel really good about, and then getting
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: beat up by an Oregon team who is maybe good,
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: but not 100%. I mean, Penn State, that's a scary one.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: And USC maybe doesn't pull the trigger on Lincoln Riley
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: immediately after that, but they've still got Ohio State, Indiana,
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: and UCLA on the schedule. So this is a must,
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: must win for USC. All right, we've got to take
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: a break here. The Daily Dump is coming up next.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Then we've got Lee Sterling shortly after that.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: We're rolling on a Friday. It's the Sean O'Connell Show
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:20:45Speaker 5: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:20:51Speaker 5: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:20:54Speaker 5: one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM. Brought to you by
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just look for the truck
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: with the duck.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: Valley Plumbing, heating, and cooling for your drain cleaning, your plumbing,
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: your excavation, your heater, your air conditioner, for anything.
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: Look for the truck with the duct. Tell them OC
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: sent you.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: When you make a phone call and an appointment, you
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: can also go to valleyplumbing.com and make an appointment online
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: without even picking up the phone. All right, Lee Sterling
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: is going to join us here in about 10 minutes.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: We'll make the Daily Dump pretty quick. Sad news, Mike Ditka,
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: the Chicago Bears legend, Hall of Famer as both an
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: NFL player and as a coach has passed away at
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: 86 years old. Won a Super Bowl championship, obviously. More
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: than that, legendary. Like, he's an icon. You don't have
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: to talk about him as the greatest coach of all time.
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: It's just he was one of these individuals that as
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: a tight end in the NFL put up some big
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: numbers in a time when tight ends weren't putting up
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: big numbers.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: And then he went on to coach.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: And became the iconic head of an iconic team and
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: doing that, finding a way to manage the personalities that
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: he had to manage and pointing everybody in the right
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: direction in an era of the NFL where, you know,
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: the inmates were running the asylum a little bit was
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: maybe just as impressive as anything else he did as
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: a player. So Mike Ditka passes away and the NFL
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: loses one of its most iconic symbols, a guy that,
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: you know, just the, The vest and the mustache and
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: the sunglasses, you don't even have to say the name
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: and you know what those things symbolize. How many NFL
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: coaches or players have been the subject of pop culture,
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: like iconic Saturday Night Live skits and things like that?
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: The man is a legend. So rest in peace to
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: Mike Ditka. I believe, by the way, I think he
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: has a granddaughter that's a local or was a local
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: at one point here in Utah. if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: So a shout out to the whole Mike Ditka family who,
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: you know, even when you know it's coming, even if
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: people are old, it's never good to say goodbye to
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: grandpa or great uncle or whatever.
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: Rest in peace, Mike Ditka. Obviously another local connection.
- 1:23:19Speaker 10: He coached the BYU great quarterback, Jim McMahon in that
- 1:23:24Speaker 10: soup on that Superbowl team. So, I mean, a couple,
- 1:23:27Speaker 10: a couple of local connections there with the 85 bears. Um,
- 1:23:29Speaker 10: and he, you're right about just the pop culture references.
- 1:23:34Speaker 10: I remember, remember the discount double check commercial with the,
- 1:23:38Speaker 10: with the Dick impersonators with Aaron Rogers, the state farm
- 1:23:43Speaker 10: commercial is like, like you don't get that if you're
- 1:23:47Speaker 10: not an icon.
- 1:23:48Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:23:48Speaker 10: And it was the look, it was obviously the legendary
- 1:23:52Speaker 10: team that still lives on. And now 40 years later
- 1:23:56Speaker 10: is still talked about as one of the greatest teams
- 1:23:58Speaker 10: of all time. I mean, just, Just a true legend
- 1:24:02Speaker 10: in every sense of the word. Even if, like you said,
- 1:24:04Speaker 10: even if he's not in the greatest of all time conversation,
- 1:24:09Speaker 10: he's in a different conversation because of how iconic he
- 1:24:12Speaker 10: was and the kind of legend that he was.
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: Five-time Pro Bowler, two-time first-team All-Pro, one-time NFL champ before
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: they called it the Super Bowl as a player, one-time
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Super Bowl champ with those 85 Bears, two-times Coach of
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: the Year, 1961 Rookie of the Year. Professional football writers,
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: coach of the year twice. Yeah, I mean, sporting news
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: coach of the year, sporting news rookie of the year,
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: coach of the year a couple of times. The guy
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: was just, he's an icon. So rest in peace. By
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: the way, tight end numbers in his playing days. He
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: had a 12-year career. He scored 43 touchdowns. And actually
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: his rookie year was the most productive year of his
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: entire career. He was a 1,000-yard receiver as a rookie
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: tight end in 1961. I didn't even know that any
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: tight ends got over 1,000 yards like pre-' 90s. Before you
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: just said that, that's crazy.
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: Yeah, seriously.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: It's pretty crazy.
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: He had 12 touchdowns that year, and then the most
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: he scored after that was eight.
- 1:25:24Speaker 9: Wow.
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: Twelve scores, five, eight, five, and.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: Two for four straight years, then three, then zero, then
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: one touchdown for Dallas in 71, and one touchdown for
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: Dallas in 1972.
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: Did he win.
- 1:25:40Speaker 10: The Super Bowl as a player with the Cowboys, or
- 1:25:44Speaker 10: did he miss the Roger Staubach-era Super Bowls?
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: It seemed like he was close to that.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: I think he did win the Super Bowl as a
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: player with the— It was an NFL championship.
- 1:25:58Speaker 10: NFL championship. Okay, so no Super Bowl, but NFL championship. Yeah,
- 1:26:02Speaker 10: I mean, just a great champion, too. That's why he's
- 1:26:06Speaker 10: a Hall of Famer, absolutely.
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: What year was that? Crazy stuff.
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: You never like to see the sports icons going away.
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: All right, let's fit in a PGA Tour leaderboard update
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: from the Bay Current Championship before we get to Lee Sterling.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: These are brought to you by Uintah Golf by Worldwide Golf,
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: in-store or online. In-store is where you can get your

- 1:26:39Speaker 2: online at worldwidegolf.com. Free shipping on orders over $ 99. 50% off,
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: up to 50% off on the Ben Hogan golf apparel
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: right now. And drivers starting at $ 299. Tell them OC
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: sent you. When you stop by your local, you went
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: to golf or shop online.
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: What's the update, James?
- 1:27:04Speaker 10: So, yeah, playing in Japan, the Bay Current Championship, second
- 1:27:08Speaker 10: round already in the books. Third round starts tonight for
- 1:27:16Speaker 10: the Bay Current players. Keith Mitchell, Jacob Bridgman are your
- 1:27:19Speaker 10: leaders at 11-under. Max Homa is in a group tied
- 1:27:23Speaker 10: for third at 9-under. Tied for 7th at 8-under are
- 1:27:27Speaker 10: Justin Thomas and Minwoo Lee and a couple others there.
- 1:27:32Speaker 10: And then tied for 10th to round out the top 10.
- 1:27:35Speaker 10: At 7-under, you got Ricky Castillo, Jordan Smith, Michael Brennan.
- 1:27:40Speaker 10: Tony Finau is tied for 30th at 3-under. Xander Shoffley
- 1:27:44Speaker 10: also tied for 30th. So, I mean, good showing for Tony,
- 1:27:47Speaker 10: especially compared to what's been a really down year for him.
- 1:27:51Speaker 10: It's nice to see him playing the weekend. which technically
- 1:27:56Speaker 10: starts tonight because, again, this tournament takes place in Japan.
- 1:28:00Speaker 10: That's your PGA Tour leaderboard update brought to you by
- 1:28:03Speaker 10: Uintah Golf.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: By the way, Mike Ditka, Super Bowl champion with the
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: Dallas Cowboys as a player in the 1971 season, assistant
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: coach Super Bowl championship with the Dallas Cowboys in 1977.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: The NFL championship in 1963 was with the Bears. And then,
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: of course, head coach of the 1985 Bears.
- 1:28:28Speaker 10: So, I mean, he's got to be one of the
- 1:28:30Speaker 10: rare people to win as a player, head coach, and
- 1:28:33Speaker 10: assistant coach. Like, I i can't imagine there's that many
- 1:28:37Speaker 10: players that have done that and an nfl championship to boot.
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: Legend all right We'll take a break.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: We'll come back with Lee Sterling, number one handicapper in
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: the business, giving you your picks for the weekend. And
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: then Coordinator's Corner with Colton Swan.
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: We're coming at you.
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: Live from Smith's Marketplace in Daybreak. I have Salt Lake
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: home show tickets. I've got Smith's tailgate passes. I've got
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: Taffy Town ESPN 700 Taffy. And I have Smith's gift
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: cards still to give away. We're in the deli area
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: over next to the Starbucks. 5448 West Daybreak Parkway, just
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: on the west side of the Mountain View Corridor. Come
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: see us out in Daybreak. It's the Sean O'Connell Show
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. There'll be peace when.
- 1:29:25Speaker 10: You are done.
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: the best youths football coverage. Here's O.C. from the Murdoch
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Our next guest, Lee Sterling, Paramount Sports, gets hot and
- 1:29:45Speaker 2: stays hot in the college football, the NFL, and even
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: if you're a big UFC or MMA fan, he's got
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: picks for that as well. ParamountSports.com, 800-400-9741. Lee Sterling joins
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: us again to talk about some of the picks of
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: the week.
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: Hi, Lee.
- 1:30:03Speaker 6: Hey, how are you?
- 1:30:04Speaker 9: You know what's crazy?
- 1:30:05Speaker 6: I was just hearing the news and watching the win.
- 1:30:08Speaker 6: How does Israel Bonfim play? Missed weight by seven and
- 1:30:12Speaker 6: a half pounds.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: That is so unprofessional, and you're just not trying at
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: that point. Now, if it's a super late notice fight,
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: you've got to make sure that your manager negotiates that in,
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: catch weight opportunity, which the UFC doesn't like to give you.
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: But that's a bad, bad sign for Israel Bonfim.
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:30:33Speaker 6: And I was going to go against him, too. So,
- 1:30:35Speaker 6: you know, let him sit in the sweat box for
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: a few hours, see if he can get even closer,
- 1:30:41Speaker 6: and then I'll put even more money on Prado.
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: Let's talk about the picks of the week here, Lee. Well,
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: first of all, staying hot from last week.
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: Yep. 3-1-1 on the picks you gave us last week.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: You got a really interesting slate of college football this weekend,
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: and we're starting off hot with a top six matchup. Alabama, Georgia, Bama,
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: one-and-a-half-point favorites in this barn burner.
- 1:31:09Speaker 6: Yeah, and I just checked the weather, and it looks
- 1:31:12Speaker 6: like we find maybe a light drizzle during the game,
- 1:31:15Speaker 6: but that field drained super well. And, you know, these
- 1:31:19Speaker 6: two teams could end up meeting again in the SEC
- 1:31:22Speaker 6: championship game or the college football playoffs. It's tough to
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: go against top-tier quarterbacks. But you've got to pick one
- 1:31:30Speaker 6: to go against here. Maybe it's Gunnar Stockton. And as
- 1:31:33Speaker 6: good as he is, I mean, he's a winner. He
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: could win a national championship. He is that much of
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: a leader. A lot of times on third and seven,
- 1:31:41Speaker 6: he'll make the throw that moves the change. He'll dive
- 1:31:44Speaker 6: for the first down. His team feeds off him. And
- 1:31:48Speaker 6: the defense is really good. They're linebackers.
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 1:31:51Speaker 6: I don't know if I've ever seen linebackers that can
- 1:31:54Speaker 6: pursue sideline to sideline like these two guys. But The
- 1:31:58Speaker 6: difference here is I think injuries to their running backs.
- 1:32:02Speaker 6: Top two guys might be on a pitch count, and
- 1:32:06Speaker 6: maybe one or two of their top three receivers may
- 1:32:08Speaker 6: miss this game. So I think Alabama has more quick
- 1:32:12Speaker 6: strike capability on offense and defense. Yeah, they give up
- 1:32:16Speaker 6: more yards and points, but they also have eight interceptions,
- 1:32:19Speaker 6: and they've taken two to the house. I just think
- 1:32:22Speaker 6: that Alabama at home with Keelan Russell, quarterback, just more dangerous.
- 1:32:26Speaker 6: They can go to the house. on any play on you.
- 1:32:29Speaker 6: I like Alabama. Should be an instant classic here, 30-27.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: I'm going to save the BYU and Utah games best
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: for last here, so we'll get to some NFL picks.
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: The Rams are three-point favorites against the Bills.
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: The Rams, we talked about the Rams.
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: We crowned the Rams before the season started as the
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: eventual Super Bowl champions. They still haven't had Aaron Donald
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: and Myles Garrett playing together. That will happen eventually. They
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: are three-point favorites against the Bills team that also has
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: Super Bowl expectations. Are we getting a preview of what
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: we might see in the last game of the season?
- 1:33:04Speaker 6: Oh, I think it could happen here. I do like
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: the setup, though, for Buffalo coming off seven turnovers the
- 1:33:10Speaker 6: last two weeks. Rams defensive unit shows so many different looks,
- 1:33:14Speaker 6: but Josh Allen is seen. He just needs to be
- 1:33:16Speaker 6: a little more careful with the ball. If they were
- 1:33:19Speaker 6: coming in 4-0, I think the Rams might knock them
- 1:33:21Speaker 6: off here, but I think they have a chip on
- 1:33:23Speaker 6: their shoulder a lot of times when teams travel. Awful
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: loss if they're a top-tier team. They get a couple
- 1:33:29Speaker 6: guys back, especially on the defense. They're a dangerous team here.
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: So I like Buffalo. Last team with a ball wins.
- 1:33:37Speaker 6: Give me the bills here, 34-30.
- 1:33:41Speaker 4: Seahawks, Niners.
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: Niners are my team, Lee. Tread carefully here. Seahawks are
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: favorites at home.
- 1:33:48Speaker 6: Well, we had them last week, and as long as
- 1:33:50Speaker 6: they don't take any more injuries, I think they should
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: be okay. This is a great setup. San Francisco was
- 1:33:56Speaker 6: coming off the short week last year in the playoffs,
- 1:34:00Speaker 6: had to travel to Seattle in the NFC divisional round
- 1:34:04Speaker 6: and got blown out 41-6. I think they have the
- 1:34:07Speaker 6: better quarterback right now. I think Brock Purdy's playing the
- 1:34:10Speaker 6: best football of any quarterback in the league, and I
- 1:34:14Speaker 6: think Sam Darnold, something's missing right now. He's not clicking
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: on all cylinders, and Seattle, here's a tell, tells you
- 1:34:21Speaker 6: how bad things are at running back. They were thinking about,
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: and not just for a minute, until they brought him
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: in for a physical on signing Joe Mixon. Are you
- 1:34:30Speaker 6: kidding me here? I like San Francisco. I think they
- 1:34:33Speaker 6: exact that revenge here, 27-23.
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: Let's go. That's what we need.
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: The game of the week, Boise State, who I think
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: is the best group of six team we have in
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: the country. They're six-and-a-half-point favorites in a conference matchup against
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: Fresno State.
- 1:34:48Speaker 6: Yep, they want to get that game for free. This
- 1:34:51Speaker 6: has become a big game all of a sudden. So
- 1:34:54Speaker 6: two teams playing at a high level, you want to
- 1:34:56Speaker 6: get it for free, just call that number, 800-400-9741. Give
- 1:35:01Speaker 6: you the game for free. And a lot going on.
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: You know, the UFC, another big card for us. We
- 1:35:06Speaker 6: won 16 of the last 20 cards. Five selections, $ 55 there.
- 1:35:11Speaker 6: In football, we've won six straight weeks. I don't think
- 1:35:14Speaker 6: anyone in the country can match that documented record. Check
- 1:35:18Speaker 6: out all the specials at ParamountSports.com.
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: I really wanted your help with this one. We've been
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: talking about it kind of all week and certainly a
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: lot today. Big injury news at BYU. They're down their
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: top two running backs. One of their best linebackers is out.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: Raider DeMooney they thought was going to be a starting safety.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: He's yet to play any significant time this year. BYU,
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: ten-and-a-half-point favorites. It's a night game tonight at Lavelle Edwards
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: Stadium against an Iowa State team that, after getting beat
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: up by Utah, showed a lot of life last week
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: and ran all over the place. Ten-and-a-half feels big to me, Lee.
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: I wanted your thoughts.
- 1:35:57Speaker 6: I feel the same way here. You know, Bear Bachmeier,
- 1:36:01Speaker 6: I mean, the kid has heart. Running, pulling the football,
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: he's a leader. But they just don't have quick strike
- 1:36:07Speaker 6: capability on offense. I mean, the defense, probably the hardest-hitting
- 1:36:11Speaker 6: defense I've seen in a couple years, they smack you.
- 1:36:14Speaker 6: I would not want to face them. But on offense,
- 1:36:16Speaker 6: I don't see this team scoring 30, 40 points. So
- 1:36:19Speaker 6: do you want to lay double digits to a team
- 1:36:22Speaker 6: that has a running back that can do it all,
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: running the football, catching the ball out of the backfield?
- 1:36:27Speaker 9: No.
- 1:36:28Speaker 6: And they've got confidence. You know, they played with Iowa
- 1:36:31Speaker 6: on the road, lost by three, didn't give up against Utah.
- 1:36:35Speaker 6: So I think it's going to be a low-scoring game here.
- 1:36:38Speaker 6: I think BYU escapes here 21-17, but I'm taking the
- 1:36:43Speaker 6: double-digit points here in the Cyclones.
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: Okay, I thought that might be your pick.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: Also, Aiden Flora, who you just referenced, a running back
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: who can do it all, against Utah, they held him
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: to four yards a carry.
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: That's still a respectable average, but... They went.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: Away from him too much in that game. He only
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: got 13 carries in that game against Utah because they
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: were trailing so much after a really bad first half.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: If they can stay the course and keep feeding him
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: the ball, even if they're trailing against BYU, I think
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: we're talking about exactly what you're mentioning here, a much
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: closer game.
- 1:37:16Speaker 6: Yep, I agree with you 100%. He's a whale of
- 1:37:18Speaker 6: a football player. You know, I don't know, sometimes you
- 1:37:21Speaker 6: see guys like that and they don't project to the
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: next level. This guy might be able to find his
- 1:37:26Speaker 6: way onto a roster and even contribute.
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: Little baby Christian McCaffrey, for obvious reasons, you get that comparison.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: All right, big one tomorrow night at Rice Echo Stadium.
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: I don't know if you've seen the iced-out, white-out uniforms
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: that they're planning for the night game, the hand-painted helmets.
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: Everyone in the fan base is really fired up about that.
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: The players are fired up. And they're a big-time favorite.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: I've seen it 15 and a half, 15 points against
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: the Kansas Jayhawks team that so far has looked pretty
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: hapless against Power 4 competition. Lee, I'm trying to not
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: be overconfident here. I'm trying to not be like, oh yeah,
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: Utah's going to smash this Kansas team, but everything on.
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: Tape shows me that they should. Tell me how this
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: game goes.
- 1:38:10Speaker 6: Yeah, and they're reckless with the ball. I mean, they
- 1:38:12Speaker 6: will try sometimes to push the ball down the field,
- 1:38:14Speaker 6: but you have a young quarterback who's talented. He can
- 1:38:17Speaker 6: make a lot of throws, but You know, sometimes that
- 1:38:20Speaker 6: gets you in trouble here. This game actually, what's interesting,
- 1:38:24Speaker 6: I look back, Kansas did cover in their last game
- 1:38:26Speaker 6: of 2025 against Utah by half points. so this kind
- 1:38:31Speaker 6: of counts as a revenge spot here, but they just
- 1:38:34Speaker 6: don't give me any reason here to think that they
- 1:38:36Speaker 6: can pull it off. Utah is hot. Only a bye
- 1:38:39Speaker 6: week could stop them. Wayshawn Parker, 174 rushing yards and
- 1:38:43Speaker 6: two touchdowns versus Iowa State, and their number three defense nationally.
- 1:38:48Speaker 6: giving up just 10.3 points per game here. I think
- 1:38:50Speaker 6: they're going to get three-plus turnovers here. That'll be the difference,
- 1:38:53Speaker 6: even special teams. I think Utah does a number here
- 1:38:58Speaker 6: on Kansas, 41-17.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: Win and cover for the Utes, according to Lee Sterling. Again,
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Paramount Sports stays red hot. James, my producer, just whispered
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: in my ear. in the Falcons Ravens game, it looks
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: like former Tyler Huntley is going to be starting in
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: this game. And the Falcons have been one of the
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: surprises of the NFL for me. What do you think
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: about that game?
- 1:39:21Speaker 6: Well, I think the Atlanta and I kind of identified
- 1:39:24Speaker 6: it when they came back and they got their quarterback,
- 1:39:26Speaker 6: they were going to be a tough out. They might
- 1:39:28Speaker 6: be playing the best football right now in the NFL,
- 1:39:30Speaker 6: not just offensively. Their defense is feeding off of it also.
- 1:39:34Speaker 6: So most of the yards they've given up has been
- 1:39:37Speaker 6: in the second half. Tyler Huntley, uh, This is the
- 1:39:41Speaker 6: only team he seems to be able to be in
- 1:39:43Speaker 6: the right fit, but he just can't push the ball
- 1:39:45Speaker 6: down the field, and that could be a problem against
- 1:39:47Speaker 6: his defense. Hate to say it, but I like Atlanta here.
- 1:39:51Speaker 6: I think they win in cover 30-20.
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: See what I did there? I just got you all listening.
- 1:39:55Speaker 2: I got you a little bonus pick from Lee Sterling. 800-400-9741, ParamountSports.com.
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: Lee is the best in the business. Always great catching
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: up with you, my friend. We'll chat again next week.
- 1:40:09Speaker 9: You too, buddy. Take care.
- 1:40:10Speaker 6: Be safe.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: Great stuff from Lee Sterling, former quarterback himself, by the way. Man,
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: interesting games, big games.
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: I think I'm with him on that BYU contest.
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: I could see it being a real slog, a real
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: struggle for BYU, but I do think the Cougs are
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: a good team, and defensively especially, even without Isaiah Glasgow,
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: they have what it takes to win this game.
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: I'm also taking the under.
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: On that one, because like Lee Sterling, I just don't
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: think that this is going to be a high-scoring affair,
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: especially with the nice weather down there. Jalen Rayner just
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: can't pass, and Bear Bachmeier last week looked like he
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: couldn't pass.
- 1:40:50Speaker 10: Yeah, O.C., it feels like it's a good pick to
- 1:40:54Speaker 10: pick Iowa State to cover this game, but BYU come
- 1:40:59Speaker 10: out with a much closer win than the betting line
- 1:41:03Speaker 10: would suggest, but then I mean, we're both agreeing with that,
- 1:41:07Speaker 10: so maybe you should just, if you are so inclined,
- 1:41:11Speaker 10: maybe you should just go the other way.
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: You know what?
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: My picks have been good this year, okay?
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: I went 2-2-1 last week, which was kind of down,
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: but I think I'm like 13-6 right now. I'll have
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: to look up the totals, but man, it's been a
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: really interesting... slate so far and this weekend you have
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: just some games that could go completely awry like UCF
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: on the road at Oklahoma State Oklahoma State are 10.5
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: point favorites there I could see that one getting a
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: little bit weird for UCF and Oklahoma State running away
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: with like a 40 point victory in this game UCF
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: is one of these other big 12 squads that they've
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: won they beat TCU and they played tough against Houston
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: They also played tough against a really good Pitt team.
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: I still don't know what they are. There's too many
- 1:42:09Speaker 2: teams in the Big 12 Conference. I still don't know
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: what they are, who they are. I'll tell you who
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: we do know a lot about. Utah football and especially
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: their defense. Coordinator's Corner with Colton Swan is coming up next.
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: Come by and see us at Daybreak Smith's Marketplace.
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: We have.
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: Tailgate passes. We have Smith's gift cards. We have Taffy
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: Town Taffy. We have tickets to the Salt Lake City
- 1:42:38Speaker 2: Home Show. And we got one more hour to give
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: them away. 5448 West Daybreak Parkway.
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: Come see us. Colton Swan next.
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: Brought to you by Mountain Home Services on the Sean
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: O'Connell Show.
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: ESPN 700.
- 1:42:51Speaker 9: 92.1 FM.
- 1:42:55Speaker 5: Let's dive into this week's matchup in the Coordinator's Corner
- 1:42:58Speaker 5: of the Sean O'Connell Show. OC chats with the coordinators
- 1:43:02Speaker 5: every week of the Utah football season. On your home
- 1:43:05Speaker 5: of the Utes and your home for football, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: We got the airing of grievances coming up, but right now,
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: what you've all been waiting for, Coordinator's Corner, and this
- 1:43:19Speaker 2: week we get to catch up with Colton Swan.
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: Defensive coordinator at the University of Utah.
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: His defense has been looking pretty darn good. We'll get
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: to the bottom of how and why. It's the Sean
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: O'Connell Show here.
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: Colton Swan, welcome. How are you?
- 1:43:35Speaker 9: Good, OC.
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: How are you?
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: Doing all right.
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: We're going to ask you to go back a couple
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: of weeks because we haven't had a chance to talk
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: to you in a couple of weeks. First of all,
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: how do you feel like practice went during the bye week?
- 1:43:50Speaker 9: Awesome. It's, you know, bi-week is used for two things.
- 1:43:55Speaker 9: Number one, to get ahead mentally. You know, you get
- 1:43:57Speaker 9: a jump on, you know, your next opponent. You dive
- 1:44:01Speaker 9: into the film study. It's also used for recovery. You
- 1:44:05Speaker 9: got to do a great job with, you know, your nutrition,
- 1:44:07Speaker 9: your sleep, you know, your rehab, stuff like that. So
- 1:44:11Speaker 9: trying to get ahead from a body standpoint and also
- 1:44:13Speaker 9: a mental standpoint. So bi-week went well for us.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: And, of course, much more importantly, the team handled its
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: first road game very well. Your defense limited one of
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: the best players in the conference, in my estimation, in
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: Aiden Flora to well below his game averages, his season
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: averages so far. And, you know, handled business, got the
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: job done, and your team is 4-0 with a chance
- 1:44:38Speaker 2: to be 5-0.
- 1:44:39Speaker 4: Tomorrow night.
- 1:44:40Speaker 2: So go back, if you're willing, all the way to
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: that Iowa State road trip and tell me how your
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: team graded out and how you thought things went.
- 1:44:49Speaker 9: Yeah, I thought it was a good challenge for us.
- 1:44:52Speaker 9: It was kind of like, okay, who are we from
- 1:44:54Speaker 9: an identity standpoint? We knew what we were going to face. And,
- 1:44:59Speaker 9: you know, in Iowa State's power run downhill, and as
- 1:45:05Speaker 9: you mentioned, the running back, an extremely good player. You
- 1:45:08Speaker 9: saw what he did this This last week at West Virginia,
- 1:45:11Speaker 9: it's like, okay, that kid is a good runner. It
- 1:45:15Speaker 9: was a chance for us to really kind of showcase
- 1:45:18Speaker 9: our physicality, our ability to play with good pad level
- 1:45:22Speaker 9: and inside hands and control the line of scrimmage. We
- 1:45:25Speaker 9: knew that's what the game was going to be. Afterwards,
- 1:45:29Speaker 9: their coach came on and said they really made us one-dimensional.
- 1:45:33Speaker 9: They kind of took away what we do best in
- 1:45:36Speaker 9: the run game. And I was really proud of our guys.
- 1:45:40Speaker 9: They stepped up to the challenge. They worked hard all
- 1:45:42Speaker 9: week going into the game. They knew what they had
- 1:45:45Speaker 9: to do. And right from the very first play, you
- 1:45:48Speaker 9: could see the dominance just at the line of scrimmage
- 1:45:51Speaker 9: with our guys, you know, from the front seven to
- 1:45:53Speaker 9: even the safeties coming up, corners getting involved in the
- 1:45:56Speaker 9: run game. I think our guys really did a good
- 1:45:58Speaker 9: job of buying into what we were asking them.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: Not only stopping keeping them below their averages but a
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: lot of disruptive plays a lot of TFLs and things
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: like that in this game and I know that for
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: a defensive coordinator that probably brings a little tear to
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: your eyes seeing your guys win not only at the
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: line of scrimmage but but in anticipation and matching their
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: film study to know what's coming. And getting to that
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: point of attack so quickly. And you had a nice distribution.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: Trey Reynolds a couple of times in the backfield. Jai
- 1:46:28Speaker 2: once again. Elijah Ellis is really starting to shine, I think.
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: So just, you know, when you see those guys not
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: only make a play, but make a disruptive play, a
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: negative play for the offense. Just tell me, you know,
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: how it feels for you to know that the work
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: that all of them put in and that you put
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: in is paying off.
- 1:46:45Speaker 9: Yeah, it's, you know, on the defensive side, we call
- 1:46:48Speaker 9: it production. And with those havoc plays that you're talking
- 1:46:53Speaker 9: about are impactful type of plays, whether it be sacks, TFLs, PBUs, interceptions,
- 1:46:58Speaker 9: you know, and what's interesting to see, and we track them,
- 1:47:02Speaker 9: you know, All the way from fall camp through the
- 1:47:05Speaker 9: season and to see how our guys are producing in
- 1:47:09Speaker 9: those havoc plays is really exceptional. It's kind of nice
- 1:47:12Speaker 9: to see these guys, you know, getting their hands on
- 1:47:15Speaker 9: the balls and, you know, creating sacks and everything. And
- 1:47:18Speaker 9: I get in those TFLs on such crucial short yardage situations.
- 1:47:23Speaker 9: You know, they understand the down distances. So I think
- 1:47:26Speaker 9: they really are kind of buying into, you know, our
- 1:47:28Speaker 9: culture on the defensive side. And, and those havoc plays
- 1:47:32Speaker 9: are showing up. We have a goal of getting 14
- 1:47:34Speaker 9: havoc plays, you know, every game, you know, and in
- 1:47:38Speaker 9: so far in the four games, we've been up 20,
- 1:47:41Speaker 9: 20 plus type havoc plays with, with those, those impactful
- 1:47:46Speaker 9: plays for us.
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: So, You were taught, you talked about it in, in
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: post-practice media availability this week, but you know, we, we've
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: been nitpicky and we've been saying like, all right, sacks, sacks, sacks.
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: And you have, you know, a couple of times now
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: mentioned in answering questions about it, that it's not a
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: be all end all getting.
- 1:48:05Speaker 4: Sack production, especially from certain position groups, but with mobile quarterbacks,
- 1:48:10Speaker 4: a lot of what needs to be emphasized.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: And we saw this against Iowa state and, Kansas could
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: present this problem and West Virginia down the road and
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: BYU down the road and all this. that you've got
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: to maintain gap integrity. You've got to keep containment and
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: things like that. How are your guys grading out on
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: that aspect of a pass rush and the passing game
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: right now?
- 1:48:32Speaker 9: Yeah, that's, you know, I think you kind of hit
- 1:48:34Speaker 9: the nail on the head. You know, sacks come, you
- 1:48:38Speaker 9: look at through four games. I mean, we're ahead of
- 1:48:41Speaker 9: last year and the year before as far as amount
- 1:48:43Speaker 9: of sacks. But we don't really focus on the amount.
- 1:48:48Speaker 9: I think if we turn our attention to, oh, you got,
- 1:48:51Speaker 9: we need more sacks, we need more sacks, which, you know,
- 1:48:54Speaker 9: if you look at it statistically, we're actually ahead of
- 1:48:57Speaker 9: where we were last year through four games. You know,
- 1:48:59Speaker 9: but the mindset, I truly believe that if you're just
- 1:49:03Speaker 9: sitting there focusing on sacks and, you know, from a
- 1:49:05Speaker 9: defensive end standpoint, defensive tackle standpoint, you lose the integrity
- 1:49:09Speaker 9: of your defense. Uh, and, and that's where you mentioned
- 1:49:12Speaker 9: earlier in your question is like, okay, you're playing these
- 1:49:15Speaker 9: athletic quarterbacks. If you are, you know, got one guy
- 1:49:18Speaker 9: that is undisciplined in his rush lane, you know, you're
- 1:49:22Speaker 9: going to let an athletic quarterback get out and, you know, scramble,
- 1:49:25Speaker 9: it's going to hurt you more. So it's, it's gotta
- 1:49:27Speaker 9: be a collective deal in the fact of, Hey, we've
- 1:49:30Speaker 9: got to make sure that we're containing these athletic quarterbacks
- 1:49:33Speaker 9: and Keep them guys in the pocket.
- 1:49:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:49:35Speaker 9: Well, you know, sometimes it might be a PVU or,
- 1:49:38Speaker 9: you know, an incomplete pass versus a sack, but you know,
- 1:49:41Speaker 9: we're not letting the guys scramble on third and eight
- 1:49:43Speaker 9: and get a pickup, the first down, you know, so
- 1:49:45Speaker 9: there's a lot that kind of goes into it and
- 1:49:47Speaker 9: the teaching process for these kids and them really understanding.
- 1:49:50Speaker 9: I think they do a really good job, but like
- 1:49:52Speaker 9: I said, the sacks, the sacks are there. You know,
- 1:49:55Speaker 9: is it, is it coming from a linebacker? Sure. Is
- 1:49:57Speaker 9: it coming from a defensive tackle? Sure. You know, it's,
- 1:50:00Speaker 9: it's collective in, in how I like to look out
- 1:50:02Speaker 9: of it. But at the same time, if we're only
- 1:50:05Speaker 9: thinking sack, then, you know, you're, you're going to get
- 1:50:07Speaker 9: your butt kicked in the run game or Q scramble game.
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: Morgan answered a question about this earlier in the week
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: about pro football focus grades. And you've got one of
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: the top defensive backfields in the entire country right now.
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: one of the top defenses in the entire country right now.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: But certainly a point of emphasis is the back end
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: and the way that those guys are handling their duties.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: And I just wanted to give you a space to
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: talk about what your safeties, your corners, your nickels have
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: been able to do this year when, you know, really.
- 1:50:37Speaker 4: You're asking a lot. Sometimes these guys are down in
- 1:50:40Speaker 4: the box. They're tackling extremely well.
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: We've seen sacks and pressures generated from their blitzes and
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: things like that. But in past coverage, those havoc plays
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: are still being produced. And, you know, I think that's
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: a credit to Sharif and to Coach Odom and everybody else.
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: But I wanted to give you an opportunity to talk
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: about the way that you think those guys have played
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: so far.
- 1:51:02Speaker 9: I've been really pleased with how they're playing. Impressed, probably
- 1:51:06Speaker 9: not the word, because that's my expectation from what they
- 1:51:10Speaker 9: have done and have shown. They've gained my trust over
- 1:51:14Speaker 9: time and are doing an exceptional job. and I'm really,
- 1:51:20Speaker 9: really pleased with where they're at. It's a deep group
- 1:51:24Speaker 9: back there. You look at the rotation at the corner
- 1:51:28Speaker 9: spot and sit there and say, okay, one of three
- 1:51:31Speaker 9: to four guys are playing and playing well and they
- 1:51:34Speaker 9: can rotate in and they're doing a great job with it.
- 1:51:36Speaker 9: You look at the safety position and if you threw
- 1:51:39Speaker 9: Benny into the mix there, you got three to four
- 1:51:42Speaker 9: guys that can play as well. The depth of it
- 1:51:45Speaker 9: and Just the cognizant ability to process all the information
- 1:51:50Speaker 9: that we're throwing at them and been really, really impressed
- 1:51:55Speaker 9: and pleased. And like you said, they are well-rounded dudes.
- 1:51:59Speaker 9: I mean, they can come down and play in the
- 1:52:01Speaker 9: box and make tackles with TFLs and blitz the quarterback
- 1:52:04Speaker 9: and do a variety of different skill sets and also
- 1:52:08Speaker 9: cover a fade from the slot from the outside one
- 1:52:11Speaker 9: or five spot. And so it's just really nice to
- 1:52:15Speaker 9: have those guys. And honestly, that was a big question
- 1:52:19Speaker 9: mark going into this season. It was, okay, we had
- 1:52:21Speaker 9: to replace some good players, replace guys that have moved on.
- 1:52:27Speaker 9: And so I've been really impressed and really pleased, I
- 1:52:31Speaker 9: should say, with where they're at and how they're continuing
- 1:52:33Speaker 9: to work.
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: You mentioned the depth, and I want to talk about depth.
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: Really on both sides of the ball right now for
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: this University of Utah football team, We're seeing a great
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: amount of depth. Yes, you have star players in both categories,
- 1:52:47Speaker 2: but there's not a significant drop off, at least from
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: my vantage point, when Elijah Ellis and Cyrus Polo are
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: in there.
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: Versus when it's Trey Reynolds and John Hall.
- 1:52:57Speaker 2: And that I think, you know, we're taking it for
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: granted already four games into the season, but it's not,
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: it's not all that normal, especially in the modern year
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: of college football where transfer portal and NIL opportunities have
- 1:53:09Speaker 2: actually diminished depth in a lot of places, especially in
- 1:53:12Speaker 2: places where you don't have unlimited funds. But I'm looking
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: at this Utah football team and I'm like, man, the
- 1:53:18Speaker 2: T the two deep feels really good in a lot
- 1:53:21Speaker 2: of these very crucial positions where How have you and
- 1:53:24Speaker 2: the rest of your coaches been able to achieve that?
- 1:53:27Speaker 9: Yeah, it's just taking those younger kids that you bring
- 1:53:30Speaker 9: in from high school and developing them. You mentioned Cyrus
- 1:53:33Speaker 9: Polu and Elijah Ellis. Those are two great examples of
- 1:53:37Speaker 9: what we've been able to, number one, recruit to, and
- 1:53:40Speaker 9: number two, develop them. But taking guys like that and
- 1:53:43Speaker 9: getting them to where you can get them on the
- 1:53:46Speaker 9: field and they can produce, you trust them to be
- 1:53:48Speaker 9: out there. And so it's a well-rounded defense, especially when
- 1:53:54Speaker 9: you can have 22 guys in uh, ability to be
- 1:53:59Speaker 9: on the, on the field versus, you know, just 12, 13, 14,
- 1:54:03Speaker 9: 15 guys. And you don't have, you know, the two
- 1:54:05Speaker 9: deep that you would normally have. And so, um, you know,
- 1:54:09Speaker 9: a credit to, to everybody included strength staff and all
- 1:54:12Speaker 9: the coaches and, and, These kids are really working to
- 1:54:16Speaker 9: get on the field, and it definitely shows up. For
- 1:54:19Speaker 9: these long seasons, once they go 14, 15 weeks, you've
- 1:54:24Speaker 9: got to have guys that provide that depth and that
- 1:54:27Speaker 9: are quality players, for sure.
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: Colton Swan, Utah defensive coordinator, is our guest here on
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show for Coordinator's Corner ahead of a
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: Kansas matchup Saturday night, whiteout at Rice Eccles Stadium, 8-15 kick.
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: The weather might be a little bit soggy and cold
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: to match those iced out helmets. We'll get to that
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: here in just a second. Uh, I mean, we've been
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: too positive. We've been too hunky Dory to singing everyone's praises.
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: What is the thing that you need your defense to
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: do better? What is something that you, you were able
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: to watch some film in the spy week and look
- 1:55:00Speaker 2: and evaluate and say, all right, here's some more potential
- 1:55:03Speaker 2: that we can unlock.
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: Let's do this in Kansas and beyond.
- 1:55:07Speaker 9: Yeah, it's always for us going to be coming down
- 1:55:10Speaker 9: to stopping the run game. I think that that is
- 1:55:14Speaker 9: something that we are constantly focusing on. We are facing
- 1:55:19Speaker 9: in Kansas a very run-heavy team with a run-heavy quarterback.
- 1:55:25Speaker 9: uh not only just with his ability with qb design
- 1:55:28Speaker 9: run plays but also his ability to on the drop
- 1:55:31Speaker 9: back pass to get outside the pocket extend plays use
- 1:55:35Speaker 9: his feet to pick up first downs um and so
- 1:55:38Speaker 9: constantly working on understanding the down distance minimizing the damage
- 1:55:42Speaker 9: you know really kind of playing into what the offense
- 1:55:45Speaker 9: has given us and so you know it's it's it's Defense,
- 1:55:50Speaker 9: as you know, OC is sometimes it's organized chaos, right?
- 1:55:54Speaker 9: You get aligned, you assign, you know, the ball snapped,
- 1:55:56Speaker 9: you try to execute. And then from that point, you know,
- 1:55:59Speaker 9: you're really trying to, to rally and tackle and pursue
- 1:56:03Speaker 9: and those types of things. And you've got to be
- 1:56:05Speaker 9: able to pin your ears back and, and get after,
- 1:56:07Speaker 9: you know, your opponent, whether it's a one-on-one matchup or,
- 1:56:11Speaker 9: or a schematic deal. But just, I really am telling
- 1:56:14Speaker 9: those guys, Hey, we've got to beat, you know, Kansas
- 1:56:17Speaker 9: every day in practice. When we have a scout period,
- 1:56:22Speaker 9: we've got to really focus in and make sure that
- 1:56:24Speaker 9: we're executing and that we're doing the things necessary, like
- 1:56:28Speaker 9: pursuing the ball and tackling and those types of things.
- 1:56:31Speaker 9: It's a skill set that a lot of people forget about.
- 1:56:35Speaker 9: because at some point your scheme is probably going to
- 1:56:38Speaker 9: break down, but your ability to pursue the football and
- 1:56:42Speaker 9: tackle should never break down. Your effort should never break down.
- 1:56:46Speaker 9: And I think that's what we do well right now,
- 1:56:48Speaker 9: but it's keeping a team that is 4-0 hungry. And
- 1:56:52Speaker 9: that's always going to be a challenge. Sometimes the pat
- 1:56:55Speaker 9: on the back is not too far from the kick
- 1:56:57Speaker 9: in the butt. So as coaches, we've got to be
- 1:57:01Speaker 9: great motivators, and we've got to really help these guys
- 1:57:04Speaker 9: understand what true leadership looks like within and how that
- 1:57:08Speaker 9: drives teams to be great, not just average, but to
- 1:57:10Speaker 9: be great. So it's definitely a mind game and trying
- 1:57:15Speaker 9: to keep these kids going because, you know, human ability
- 1:57:19Speaker 9: and natural instinct is to, to relax. And, you know,
- 1:57:23Speaker 9: like I said, I start patting backs and those types
- 1:57:26Speaker 9: of things. And that's, that's not the case. That's not
- 1:57:28Speaker 9: who we are.
- 1:57:30Speaker 2: You just mentioned Kansas is run heavy. They're they're five
- 1:57:33Speaker 2: and a half yards of carry. They're the number two
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: total offense in the conference. They're the number two rushing
- 1:57:38Speaker 2: offense in the conference, but they're not translating as well
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: into scoring offense. And I know your job is not
- 1:57:44Speaker 2: to solve their problem. It's to create more for them.
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: But why is what Kansas does in the run game
- 1:57:51Speaker 2: not leading to more points?
- 1:57:54Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I think they're putting drives together. And
- 1:57:58Speaker 9: they're falling apart with, you know, some mistakes. Being a
- 1:58:02Speaker 9: little bit careless with the football is a big thing.
- 1:58:05Speaker 9: You can see them, you know, go on length of
- 1:58:07Speaker 9: field and then create a turnover or something to that regard.
- 1:58:11Speaker 9: But yeah, I, like you said, the offense is very potent.
- 1:58:16Speaker 9: The quarterback is extremely potent. He has the ability to
- 1:58:19Speaker 9: do multiple things and he's got a very high skill set. Um, uh,
- 1:58:23Speaker 9: but they, they create a lot of problems and you
- 1:58:26Speaker 9: as a defense has got to be able to handle
- 1:58:28Speaker 9: a lot of different looks and shifts and motions and,
- 1:58:30Speaker 9: and different types of run plays. Uh, and they've got
- 1:58:33Speaker 9: a really good, they got really good players. And so, uh,
- 1:58:36Speaker 9: it's a good challenge for us defensively. Um, like I said, they,
- 1:58:40Speaker 9: they rely on that run game and the quarterback being
- 1:58:42Speaker 9: a lot of it, a big part of it. And
- 1:58:44Speaker 9: so it'll be a good challenge for us.
- 1:58:47Speaker 3: This time of year.
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: And I don't think you're experiencing these problems, but it's
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: possible that a team can start to read its own
- 1:58:56Speaker 2: press clippings and see some of the stuff that we're
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: talking about and all the statistical places where you rank
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: in the top 13 in the country and all that,
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: and you can start doing that pat myself on the
- 1:59:08Speaker 2: back kind of thing and, oh, look how good we
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: are kind of thing. Do you have to combat that
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: at all with this group?
- 1:59:15Speaker 9: A hundred percent. Absolutely. I mean, they're, they're hungry, they're
- 1:59:19Speaker 9: hungry kids and they've got, you know, a goal and
- 1:59:22Speaker 9: they've got a direction they want to head. But at
- 1:59:25Speaker 9: the same time, you as coaches, you're, you know, psychologists,
- 1:59:30Speaker 9: you're creating that motivation. You're figuring out ways to keep
- 1:59:34Speaker 9: kids hungry and not let that natural, you know, instinct
- 1:59:38Speaker 9: of becoming lazy or becoming content creep in and constantly
- 1:59:43Speaker 9: talking to guys about that. um, here and just making
- 1:59:47Speaker 9: sure that that's not part of what we do from
- 1:59:48Speaker 9: a culture standpoint. And, and I think the biggest thing is,
- 1:59:51Speaker 9: is really from a leadership standpoint, like making sure those
- 1:59:55Speaker 9: leaders understand how hungry we are and what we have, uh,
- 1:59:59Speaker 9: the ability to do. And so just keeping those, cause
- 2:00:02Speaker 9: they're the teams driven within, you know, and those leaders are,
- 2:00:06Speaker 9: are more so, um, creating that motivation, um, than coaches
- 2:00:12Speaker 9: and you're sitting in a pretty good spot. And so, yeah,
- 2:00:15Speaker 9: it's always definitely a deal that we're working on for sure.
- 2:00:20Speaker 9: I'm not saying that we're doing it, but you always,
- 2:00:22Speaker 9: when you're 4-0 and you're moving into a home game
- 2:00:27Speaker 9: and all that stuff, you want to keep those kids hungry.
- 2:00:30Speaker 2: Home game, night game, hand-painted whiteout helmets, big topic of
- 2:00:35Speaker 2: discussion in the fan base.
- 2:00:37Speaker 4: You and I come from a time where you had
- 2:00:39Speaker 4: one helmet.
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: And you're lucky if you got like the good chin
- 2:00:43Speaker 2: strap on that helmet. And now you got these guys
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: with these like beautiful works of art on their heads
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: and you get to do these cool uniform combinations and
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: all that stuff. Just you're You're an old cowboy who's
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: a football coach. What do you make of this part
- 2:00:59Speaker 2: of college football right now?
- 2:01:02Speaker 9: It's awesome. I'm excited for the kids. Obviously, the game's
- 2:01:06Speaker 9: developed a lot since you and I have played. At
- 2:01:10Speaker 9: the end of the day, it's a uniform, meaning that
- 2:01:15Speaker 9: everybody is wearing the exact same thing. It's there to
- 2:01:21Speaker 9: Protect yourself and make sure, but I don't think our
- 2:01:24Speaker 9: kids get too caught up in the uniform and the
- 2:01:27Speaker 9: excitement around it. I think they really are very mature
- 2:01:30Speaker 9: when it comes to the focus of the opponent. It's
- 2:01:35Speaker 9: awesome to have the support from the community and the crowd,
- 2:01:39Speaker 9: and there's no better place than Rice-Eccles Stadium. I know
- 2:01:43Speaker 9: the added benefit of uniform and helmets and stuff like
- 2:01:47Speaker 9: that is great for fans.
- 2:01:50Speaker 2: A couple more minutes here with Colton Swan on the
- 2:01:53Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell Show, defensive coordinator at the University of Utah.
- 2:01:57Speaker 2: I saw a couple of your guys out at the
- 2:01:58Speaker 2: UFC event this past weekend. I know you guys were
- 2:02:00Speaker 2: all on the recruiting trail as coaches, but saw Ethan
- 2:02:04Speaker 2: Day and Lance Holtzclaw and Devin Dampier out there at
- 2:02:06Speaker 2: the UFC event. And I love asking this question. I
- 2:02:09Speaker 2: usually ask players, but you're stuck with me, so you've
- 2:02:12Speaker 2: got to answer it. You've got to put one guy
- 2:02:14Speaker 2: on your team. into a cage fight and get a win?
- 2:02:20Speaker 2: Who's the guy you're putting in there with the highest probability?
- 2:02:22Speaker 9: Speaker 4 0 1, that's a tough question because now
- 2:02:26Speaker 9: you're asking me to single them out. We've got a
- 2:02:29Speaker 9: lot of guys that I would definitely put in there,
- 2:02:31Speaker 9: you know, a bunch of cage fighters guys, you know, that,
- 2:02:35Speaker 9: that just come to mind, you know, on the defensive side,
- 2:02:39Speaker 9: the Trey Reynolds is, is a guy that is, you know,
- 2:02:41Speaker 9: a bruiser and a grinder and he plays that way.
- 2:02:44Speaker 9: You know, he's, he has a knack for getting to
- 2:02:47Speaker 9: the football and, and I can see him being a
- 2:02:49Speaker 9: really good cage fighter. You know, but there's, there's big
- 2:02:53Speaker 9: strong guys like, like him all over. And so I
- 2:02:56Speaker 9: hate to pick one of them out, but if he did,
- 2:02:58Speaker 9: he said, Hey, this is the one guy I'd go
- 2:03:00Speaker 9: with Trey Reynolds.
- 2:03:01Speaker 2: Were you at the, were you at the team meeting when,
- 2:03:03Speaker 2: when Anthony went to the former linebacker and that current
- 2:03:07Speaker 2: UFC fighter.
- 2:03:07Speaker 4: When he came and spoke to the team?
- 2:03:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:03:10Speaker 9: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:03:11Speaker 4: How'd that go?
- 2:03:13Speaker 6: You're great.
- 2:03:14Speaker 9: Yeah, it's good motivation. It's fun to see somebody with
- 2:03:17Speaker 9: a different perspective and talk about what's important and, you know,
- 2:03:21Speaker 9: their motivation. And I think the guys really responded well.
- 2:03:24Speaker 9: They enjoyed it.
- 2:03:25Speaker 2: Did you get a chance to wrestle any livestock on
- 2:03:28Speaker 2: the bye week?
- 2:03:30Speaker 5: No.
- 2:03:30Speaker 9: You know, I went for a little bit of horseback ride.
- 2:03:33Speaker 9: I took my kids up and did that. Damn near freaking...
- 2:03:38Speaker 9: almost injured my daughter pretty good. She fell, ended up
- 2:03:41Speaker 9: falling off a horse and getting trampled and all that
- 2:03:43Speaker 9: good stuff, but build the character, right? Don't see.
- 2:03:48Speaker 2: That's I mean, that's the only way you could look
- 2:03:50Speaker 2: at it. I hope she's okay. I'm glad she's okay.
- 2:03:52Speaker 5: She is.
- 2:03:53Speaker 9: Yeah. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You can chuckle and laugh
- 2:03:56Speaker 9: cause she's fine. But at the moment I was like,
- 2:03:58Speaker 9: Oh crap.
- 2:03:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:03:59Speaker 2: That's scary stuff, but I'm glad it all worked out
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: and you know, she'll be happy that you raised her
- 2:04:04Speaker 2: that way when she's so, when she's tough.
- 2:04:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:04:07Speaker 9: Yeah, hope so.
- 2:04:08Speaker 4: All right, well, good luck. We'll see you out there
- 2:04:11Speaker 4: this weekend, Coach. Thanks for your time.
- 2:04:12Speaker 9: Okay, sounds good. Thanks, Sean.
- 2:04:15Speaker 2: That's Colton Swan, defensive coordinator at the University of Utah.
- 2:04:18Speaker 2: And you know what time it is on a Friday.
- 2:04:20Speaker 2: Airing of grievances next on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700,
- 2:04:24Speaker 2: 92 on FM.
- 2:04:30Speaker 5: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 2:04:33Speaker 5: best inside of your youth. Let's get back to OC
- 2:04:37Speaker 5: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM. The
- 2:04:40Speaker 5: tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances.
- 2:04:48Speaker 4: I got a lot of problems with you people. Now,
- 2:04:51Speaker 4: you're going to hear about it.
- 2:04:59Speaker 2: It is that time on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:05:01Speaker 3: Airing of grievances, 877-353-0700.
- 2:05:04Speaker 2: Text a man, get it off your chest, let us
- 2:05:07Speaker 2: know how you're feeling. At Real OC Sports, if you'd
- 2:05:10Speaker 2: rather tweet it at me, 877-353-0700.
- 2:05:11Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe if you're... Call or you can text.
- 2:05:18Speaker 10: If you stop by the Smiths in Daybreak, Smiths Marketplace
- 2:05:21Speaker 10: in Daybreak, maybe they'll throw a headset on you to
- 2:05:23Speaker 10: air your grievance.
- 2:05:24Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:05:24Speaker 3: Yeah, we could do that. We could do that.
- 2:05:27Speaker 2: I think there's probably a couple of people that are
- 2:05:29Speaker 2: going to air grievances against us because we ran out
- 2:05:31Speaker 2: of prizes out here. We got home show tickets, tailgate
- 2:05:35Speaker 2: passes cleaned out, Smiths gift cards cleaned out. Both pairs
- 2:05:39Speaker 2: of tickets were gone in hour number one to the
- 2:05:42Speaker 2: Utah versus Kansas game.
- 2:05:44Speaker 3: So next time we are on the road.
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: at a Smith's, try to get here in the first
- 2:05:50Speaker 2: half of the show because, man, we got a lot
- 2:05:52Speaker 2: of foot traffic, and I love to see it. Thanks
- 2:05:54Speaker 2: to everyone who stopped by. Appreciate you very much. Big
- 2:05:58Speaker 2: thanks to Cynthia for blocking. She's doing, like, her best
- 2:06:04Speaker 2: pass blocking, people coming up to the table, and I'm
- 2:06:08Speaker 2: the quarterback back here, and she's keeping everyone away from me.
- 2:06:13Speaker 2: We'd love to see you, but when I'm on the air,
- 2:06:15Speaker 2: I can't talk to you.
- 2:06:18Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 2:06:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:06:24Speaker 2: It's hard to prescreen these, and sometimes you kind of
- 2:06:27Speaker 2: read ahead in your mind, and you see a word,
- 2:06:29Speaker 2: and you're like, oh, boy, is this going to be
- 2:06:31Speaker 2: a tough one to read? Grievance from Curtis. My parents
- 2:06:36Speaker 2: were recently told by a Utah mortuary. Okay, so I
- 2:06:38Speaker 2: saw mortuary.
- 2:06:39Speaker 3: I was like, uh-oh. Grievance against somebody dead?
- 2:06:42Speaker 5: No. Okay.
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: My parents were recently told.
- 2:06:45Speaker 2: By Utah Mortuary that their existing insurance won't cover their
- 2:06:48Speaker 2: funeral costs, even though they have $ 12, 000 each in funeral costs,
- 2:06:53Speaker 2: and they were pushed toward a pre-need funeral contract requiring
- 2:06:57Speaker 2: $ 800 a month for two years with a hidden clause
- 2:07:01Speaker 2: stating that if they miss just one payment, they lose
- 2:07:03Speaker 2: every dollar invested. This is a devastating financial trap, so
- 2:07:07Speaker 2: please be aware for seniors in your life.
- 2:07:10Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 2:07:11Speaker 2: Okay, Curtis, first of all, I'm very sorry this happened
- 2:07:15Speaker 2: to your parents. Second of all, grievance and hopefully a
- 2:07:20Speaker 2: broken leg for whatever dirtbag company is trapping people into
- 2:07:26Speaker 2: an $ 800 a month for two years commitment with these
- 2:07:33Speaker 2: predatory hidden clauses in them.
- 2:07:36Speaker 4: Ooh, this really boils my blood. You cannot.
- 2:07:39Speaker 3: I have.
- 2:07:42Speaker 2: A lovely grandmother who is Thankfully still with us. She's
- 2:07:47Speaker 2: 87 years old.
- 2:07:49Speaker 3: Lives out of state.
- 2:07:51Speaker 2: She's awesome. She's the person who made me a San
- 2:07:56Speaker 2: Francisco 49ers fan. She's the person who made me a
- 2:07:59Speaker 2: sports fan.
- 2:08:00Speaker 3: In general.
- 2:08:00Speaker 2: She's the biggest sports fan in our family. And, I mean,
- 2:08:04Speaker 2: I wouldn't have this job if it wasn't for my grandma. Anyway,
- 2:08:07Speaker 2: she's on her own now and living in one of
- 2:08:11Speaker 2: those apartment complexes and stuff. But when you get to
- 2:08:15Speaker 2: a certain age, and unfortunately there's a lot of idle
- 2:08:18Speaker 2: time Not working anymore. Family's not around. Everyone's living their
- 2:08:23Speaker 2: own lives. These scams on the internet and by phone
- 2:08:30Speaker 2: to elderly people are just... And remember, they lived in
- 2:08:33Speaker 2: a time when this kind of stuff didn't exist. They
- 2:08:37Speaker 2: thrived in a time when this... Like, there was no Facebook.
- 2:08:39Speaker 2: There was no random, like, people coming after you for
- 2:08:44Speaker 2: no reason.
- 2:08:45Speaker 4: Oh, it boils my blood.
- 2:08:47Speaker 3: So, grievance.
- 2:08:50Speaker 2: And instead of just echoing the grievance, we will exponentially
- 2:08:53Speaker 2: increase the grievance, Curtis.
- 2:08:55Speaker 3: Sorry that happened to your family.
- 2:08:57Speaker 10: Yeah, that's terrible. And I echo both of you. Those
- 2:09:02Speaker 10: kind of scams are predatory parts of companies, whatever. Just terrible, right?
- 2:09:10Speaker 10: I will also sort of piggyback on the grievance to
- 2:09:13Speaker 10: say it costs too much to.
- 2:09:19Speaker 4: lay to rest your loved ones. Okay. Like, can we
- 2:09:23Speaker 4: figure that out?
- 2:09:24Speaker 10: Maybe it just, the cost of some things, unfortunately I've
- 2:09:29Speaker 10: talked about, I've lost both my parents. My dad passed
- 2:09:32Speaker 10: a little over three years ago now. Um, he, he
- 2:09:37Speaker 10: didn't have life insurance. So that was, that's when me
- 2:09:41Speaker 10: and my brothers learned just how much it costs to, uh,
- 2:09:46Speaker 10: bury your, your loved ones.
- 2:09:47Speaker 4: And, uh, yeah, I, I, can sympathize with Curtis in
- 2:09:52Speaker 4: a way where he.
- 2:09:54Speaker 10: It sounds like his parents are still alive, but in
- 2:09:57Speaker 10: this way where it's like, can we just make it
- 2:09:59Speaker 10: so it doesn't cost quite that much? But I guess
- 2:10:02Speaker 10: that's capitalism and that's business for these mortuaries and other
- 2:10:05Speaker 10: companies that do this stuff.
- 2:10:08Speaker 2: I mean, I didn't do the quick mental math on this,
- 2:10:11Speaker 2: but $ 800 a month for two years is.
- 2:10:18Speaker 2: A lot of money you're talking about and that's and
- 2:10:21Speaker 2: for two parents right you're talking about almost forty thousand
- 2:10:25Speaker 2: dollars that these people have now committed over the next
- 2:10:28Speaker 2: two years brutal brutal and almost every elderly person is
- 2:10:36Speaker 2: on a some kind of fixed income whether it's retirement
- 2:10:39Speaker 2: or social security or whatever there's a lot.
- 2:10:42Speaker 4: More serious than most airing of grievances but yikes.
- 2:10:44Speaker 2: Man Yeah, serious tone to the start of this airing
- 2:10:48Speaker 2: of grievances, but it's an important thing.
- 2:10:50Speaker 9: It is.
- 2:10:50Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:10:51Speaker 2: Grievance from Jordan. My biggest grievance right now is the
- 2:10:55Speaker 2: job interview process these days. I've gone through one phone interview,
- 2:10:58Speaker 2: two separate video interviews, and still have one in-person interview
- 2:11:02Speaker 2: to go for this job. That's like four separate occasions
- 2:11:05Speaker 2: I have to plan around and prep for. Seems a
- 2:11:07Speaker 2: bit much to me. 100% yes. That is too much. Now,
- 2:11:12Speaker 2: multiple interviews, I get it.
- 2:11:14Speaker 3: If you're like.
- 2:11:16Speaker 2: trying to be in the CIA is probably need to be,
- 2:11:20Speaker 2: needs to be like some extensive interview process. Uh, I
- 2:11:23Speaker 2: guess if it's a wildly competitive job market in a
- 2:11:26Speaker 2: wildly competitive company, like, uh, you know, maybe you're trying
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: to get one of these like Google dream jobs or
- 2:11:32Speaker 2: go work up on the Nike campus where every lunch
- 2:11:35Speaker 2: is free and you're getting like free, you know, chefs
- 2:11:38Speaker 2: are catering things and you get insane stock options and
- 2:11:43Speaker 2: whatnot with the, with the salary to go with it.
- 2:11:47Speaker 2: Maybe then you got to be really, really particular about
- 2:11:51Speaker 2: the people that you're hiring and you can have a three,
- 2:11:53Speaker 2: four or five interview job process.
- 2:11:57Speaker 3: I think for me, I'm capping out at like three, man.
- 2:12:01Speaker 2: Like if you don't know you want to hire me
- 2:12:03Speaker 2: or that you don't want to hire me after the
- 2:12:04Speaker 2: second conversation, that's pretty crazy. If it takes more than three,
- 2:12:11Speaker 2: then you're just being indecisive or, or more realistically, uh,
- 2:12:15Speaker 2: You have too much redundancy in your company where it's
- 2:12:18Speaker 2: like everyone has to ask for too much permission and
- 2:12:22Speaker 2: no one's allowed to make a decision. That's a good grievance, Jordan.
- 2:12:27Speaker 3: Richie, grievance.
- 2:12:29Speaker 2: Tired of people turning that either don't signal or don't
- 2:12:32Speaker 2: pull onto the shoulder or turn lane and turn into
- 2:12:35Speaker 2: the middle of the lane.
- 2:12:36Speaker 3: I'm tired of it, dude.
- 2:12:38Speaker 2: This happened to me when I was driving out to
- 2:12:40Speaker 2: the Smith's Marketplace in daybreak on the way to do
- 2:12:43Speaker 2: the show today. You know how sometimes you're driving and
- 2:12:47Speaker 2: you're like, oh, I don't mean to be in this
- 2:12:49Speaker 2: right turn lane.
- 2:12:50Speaker 4: I got to get back into the regular traffic lanes.
- 2:12:52Speaker 4: It happens to all of us.
- 2:12:54Speaker 2: So guy in front of me, slightly in front of me,
- 2:12:58Speaker 2: finds himself in that exact situation. And so it's coming
- 2:13:02Speaker 2: up to the intersection and he's got to get over.
- 2:13:05Speaker 2: And instead of signaling like he needed to get over,
- 2:13:08Speaker 2: he just jerked to the wheel and cut me off
- 2:13:11Speaker 2: and kept going.
- 2:13:12Speaker 3: And I was like, dude. I'm being observant here. I
- 2:13:15Speaker 3: could have easily braked for you.
- 2:13:18Speaker 2: I could have let you in. I would have waved you.
- 2:13:20Speaker 2: No problem if you told me your intention. That's what
- 2:13:25Speaker 2: the signals are for. Be better, Utah drivers. This from
- 2:13:33Speaker 2: Jace Babka. Shout out to the whole Babka squad. 1388,
- 2:13:37Speaker 2: no grievances today. Been fighting wildfires all summer and it's
- 2:13:40Speaker 2: hard to tune in, but Finally home and happy to
- 2:13:43Speaker 2: hear you for the full show while running errands. Happy
- 2:13:46Speaker 2: to hear you are home and safe, and thank you
- 2:13:48Speaker 2: for fighting wildfires all summer and keeping that. As far
- 2:13:52Speaker 2: as I was aware, here in Utah, it wasn't a
- 2:13:54Speaker 2: particularly aggressive wildfire season, but correct me if I'm wrong, Chase,
- 2:13:58Speaker 2: so that probably means you were all over the place
- 2:14:00Speaker 2: fighting them.
- 2:14:01Speaker 3: Man.
- 2:14:02Speaker 10: That was the one, was it the Cottonwood Fire down
- 2:14:06Speaker 10: by Beaver? Is that what that fire was named?
- 2:14:08Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a big one. He might have been
- 2:14:10Speaker 4: part of that one. That was, but Yeah, I think
- 2:14:13Speaker 4: you're right.
- 2:14:14Speaker 10: Other than that huge fire we had in state down there,
- 2:14:18Speaker 10: it feels like it was less this year.
- 2:14:21Speaker 4: But Chase can correct us if we're totally.
- 2:14:23Speaker 3: Wrong on this.
- 2:14:24Speaker 2: That might just be the news cycle giving us something
- 2:14:26Speaker 2: else to panic about. It might be AI telling us
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: don't worry because that's how they're going to kill us
- 2:14:32Speaker 2: all by starting wildfires.
- 2:14:33Speaker 4: You never know. Let's hope not.
- 2:14:38Speaker 2: From Sam, grievance, passwords not being the unique identifier. You
- 2:14:42Speaker 2: have to provide a password, go check an email, check
- 2:14:45Speaker 2: a text, stand up and check another email.
- 2:14:47Speaker 4: I'm sick of it.
- 2:14:48Speaker 2: Company sent me two texts after password and an email verification.
- 2:14:51Speaker 2: It's too much, and the obligation to keep my data
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: password secure needs to be on the company. The two-factor
- 2:14:57Speaker 2: authentication thing is a nightmare for so many reasons, but
- 2:15:01Speaker 2: let me tell you when it's particularly problematic. If you
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: are ever fortunate enough to be traveling internationally, and maybe
- 2:15:10Speaker 2: you're lucky enough to be off the grid a little bit.
- 2:15:13Speaker 2: You're lucky enough to be in a place that doesn't
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: have particularly robust Wi-Fi structure or internet access, period. When
- 2:15:22Speaker 2: you are trying to figure out how to check into
- 2:15:25Speaker 2: your flight as you're making your way back towards an
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: airport when you're in the middle of nowhere and they
- 2:15:33Speaker 2: have two-factor authentication, so it just doesn't work that you
- 2:15:36Speaker 2: have phone reception to That is the most nightmarish process.
- 2:15:39Speaker 3: That you could possibly go through. I agree with you.
- 2:15:43Speaker 2: If you volunteer for two-factor authentication because you're really that
- 2:15:47Speaker 2: worried about getting hacked or you're worried about losing some
- 2:15:52Speaker 2: crucial information, fine. Opt in and just go through the
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: seven-step process because you chose to. Requiring it is very
- 2:16:02Speaker 2: aggravating for me, and it takes so much time and effort.
- 2:16:06Speaker 2: oftentimes it's for like really silly things right it's like
- 2:16:10Speaker 2: your library card has two-factor authentication on it now if
- 2:16:14Speaker 2: somebody wants to check out a book on my library
- 2:16:16Speaker 2: card they want to hack into my library card fine
- 2:16:20Speaker 2: okay i don't need two-factor authentication there i mean i
- 2:16:22Speaker 2: don't know watch out for mr bookman from the library
- 2:16:25Speaker 2: police that when you when they don't turn it in
- 2:16:30Speaker 2: in time and they investigating you for 30 years like
- 2:16:33Speaker 2: on like on seinfeld watch out for that okay you
- 2:16:36Speaker 2: got to be careful with your library card oc 6351
- 2:16:40Speaker 2: grievance against hurricanes for potentially ruining our white out tomorrow
- 2:16:44Speaker 2: we're going to see a lot of multi-colored ponchos easy
- 2:16:47Speaker 2: fix one dollar white ponchos for sale at each gate
- 2:16:55Speaker 2: at rice echo stadium that's what i.
- 2:16:57Speaker 10: Thought i when i saw this and uh aaron's is
- 2:17:00Speaker 10: a similar grievance Spoiler alert about ponchos not having a
- 2:17:05Speaker 10: white poncho already. It's like I'm pretty sure they're probably
- 2:17:09Speaker 10: going to have them at the game, and I'm glad
- 2:17:11Speaker 10: to hear that they're affordable as well.
- 2:17:13Speaker 4: No, no, I'm saying that was my suggestion. Oh, that's
- 2:17:15Speaker 4: your suggestion to make them a dollar.
- 2:17:16Speaker 2: I need some young capitalist at the University of Utah,
- 2:17:20Speaker 2: all right, go buy 10,000 clear or white ponchos.
- 2:17:27Speaker 3: Do it today. And just hire your friends, sell those
- 2:17:31Speaker 3: bad boys at the gate.
- 2:17:33Speaker 2: If you're going to be a capitalist about it, $ 1
- 2:17:36Speaker 2: is probably not expensive enough.
- 2:17:39Speaker 3: You know what? Supply and demand, $ 5.
- 2:17:42Speaker 4: All right?
- 2:17:45Speaker 2: If it's $ 5, people are not saying no. If it's
- 2:17:47Speaker 2: more than that, people are just going to be like, whatever,
- 2:17:49Speaker 2: I'll get wet. $ 5 poncho at the gate? Or better yet,
- 2:17:53Speaker 2: University of Utah?
- 2:17:54Speaker 3: How about this? Dare I say this? Otro Capital? Maybe
- 2:18:03Speaker 3: throw a poncho on everyone's seat.
- 2:18:05Speaker 10: Yeah, like you do a T-shirt on every seat when
- 2:18:09Speaker 10: you want everyone to wear the same kind of T-shirt.
- 2:18:12Speaker 4: You know what? Put a poncho on every seat.
- 2:18:14Speaker 3: It doesn't even have to be a poncho. Here's what
- 2:18:15Speaker 3: you've got to do.
- 2:18:16Speaker 2: Go get, like, the big garbage bags and just rip
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: a hole in the top, all right?
- 2:18:21Speaker 4: There you go. A lot of those are white. You
- 2:18:24Speaker 4: got black ones, too, but you can find white garbage bags.
- 2:18:27Speaker 4: Most of the really big ones are black, but you'll
- 2:18:29Speaker 4: be able to find.
- 2:18:30Speaker 3: And it can be clear. That's the thing, because people
- 2:18:31Speaker 3: are going to be wearing white.
- 2:18:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:18:33Speaker 3: So clear will give you, like, a white effect.
- 2:18:36Speaker 4: Let me ask you this, OC.
- 2:18:38Speaker 10: You've been to way more games at Ricycle Stadium than
- 2:18:41Speaker 10: I have. You've been to bad weather games.
- 2:18:44Speaker 4: Don't they.
- 2:18:45Speaker 10: They have ponchos at least that you can buy at
- 2:18:49Speaker 10: the stadium, right, in those situations?
- 2:18:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but they're not going to have, like, a supply
- 2:18:55Speaker 2: that will meet the demand of that many thousands of people.
- 2:18:58Speaker 3: And they're probably going to be red.
- 2:19:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:19:00Speaker 10: I mean, for this game, you'd think that they're going
- 2:19:02Speaker 10: to be white or clear because of the whiteout.
- 2:19:05Speaker 4: But, yeah, you're right. Maybe not enough supply to meet
- 2:19:08Speaker 4: the demand.
- 2:19:09Speaker 3: Here's the thing, right?
- 2:19:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:19:11Speaker 2: I'm sure that when they were making the preseason orders
- 2:19:15Speaker 2: and maybe coordinating and knowing, okay, we've got a whiteout
- 2:19:19Speaker 2: game coming, they're probably thinking, it's October, so that could
- 2:19:23Speaker 2: be warm or it could be cold. So let's have
- 2:19:25Speaker 2: lots of white T-shirts. Let's have white long sleeves and
- 2:19:28Speaker 2: short sleeves. Let's have some white sweatshirts, maybe even some
- 2:19:31Speaker 2: white jackets.
- 2:19:33Speaker 3: You're not counting on rain, though. You're worried more, you
- 2:19:35Speaker 3: know what I mean? So ponchos, that's an afterthought.
- 2:19:40Speaker 2: I never think of a poncho until I need a poncho.
- 2:19:44Speaker 2: That's why the poncho market is so aggressive. Because no
- 2:19:48Speaker 2: one is like, you know what, I'm going to pre-stock
- 2:19:50Speaker 2: my ponchos.
- 2:19:52Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 2:19:53Speaker 2: Tell me how many ponchos even exist in your house
- 2:19:57Speaker 2: except when you're already wet. You know what's the craziest, dude?
- 2:20:03Speaker 2: You ever been to Disneyland when it's rainy?
- 2:20:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:20:07Speaker 2: That's probably the most profitable merchandise day that they ever
- 2:20:11Speaker 2: have at Disneyland because people show up in Florida, or
- 2:20:14Speaker 2: especially when you're in Southern California where it never rains.
- 2:20:18Speaker 4: They show up assuming good weather.
- 2:20:19Speaker 2: And then the rain starts coming down, and you're just like, well,
- 2:20:23Speaker 2: I can't let this ruin my day at Disneyland because
- 2:20:26Speaker 2: I already paid $ 1, 000 for two tickets, so everyone's got
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: to buy a poncho.
- 2:20:31Speaker 4: And you know what happens?
- 2:20:32Speaker 2: Disneyland is just like they put some, like, rudimentary mickey
- 2:20:36Speaker 2: mouse decal on there and now it's a 40 product
- 2:20:40Speaker 2: yeah do i i'm realizing now that i have a
- 2:20:43Speaker 2: grievance with ponchos in general i have a poncho market.
- 2:20:47Speaker 3: I have a grievance with the poncho industry big poncho
- 2:20:50Speaker 3: is is taking advantage of our lack of forethought.
- 2:20:54Speaker 2: I i was waiting for the big poncho shout out
- 2:20:57Speaker 2: there and you delivered that was incredible there's big everything
- 2:21:00Speaker 2: james yeah all right Grievance for Utah whiteout games in
- 2:21:05Speaker 2: October at night. Maybe pick a day game.
- 2:21:09Speaker 4: Hold on, though. Aren't whiteout games usually at night?
- 2:21:13Speaker 2: The schools that have these firmly established, like Penn State,
- 2:21:16Speaker 2: isn't it always a night game that's a whiteout?
- 2:21:18Speaker 4: I don't know that it's always one, but it probably
- 2:21:20Speaker 4: mostly is one, yeah.
- 2:21:22Speaker 2: Who actually owns a white rain poncho and we're going
- 2:21:24Speaker 2: to need tomorrow night anyways? I'll be wearing red or black. Look,
- 2:21:28Speaker 2: by all means, wear what you've got to wear. The
- 2:21:32Speaker 2: thought is what counts here, okay? The team's going to
- 2:21:36Speaker 2: look cool and they're all whites. I assume the sideline
- 2:21:40Speaker 2: is going to be mostly white.
- 2:21:41Speaker 3: I think that's great. Wear what you got to wear, people.
- 2:21:44Speaker 3: Just be there, be loud.
- 2:21:45Speaker 4: And if it rains and you get a little bit wet,
- 2:21:47Speaker 4: stay there and be loud while you're wet.
- 2:21:53Speaker 3: Okay, let's see here. Oh, this is a good one. Oh,
- 2:21:57Speaker 3: this is a long one.
- 2:21:58Speaker 4: 7271.
- 2:21:59Speaker 2: I've been waiting all week to air my grievance today
- 2:22:02Speaker 2: just so I could surprise my husband the same way
- 2:22:04Speaker 2: he surprised me. My grievance is about my husband getting
- 2:22:07Speaker 2: on the radio to complain about his grievance against me. Well,
- 2:22:10Speaker 2: let me tell you something. When it comes to choosing
- 2:22:12Speaker 2: a restaurant, he's no winner either. I'll suggest a place,
- 2:22:16Speaker 2: he'll suggest a place. And when we finally agree on one,
- 2:22:19Speaker 2: he'll say, yeah, that's fine.
- 2:22:21Speaker 3: Let's go there.
- 2:22:22Speaker 2: And then we get there, and suddenly he hates the place.
- 2:22:24Speaker 2: He barely orders anything, just something small, and tells me, oh, no,
- 2:22:28Speaker 2: I'm really not that hungry.
- 2:22:29Speaker 4: But here's the best part.
- 2:22:30Speaker 2: We haven't even made it home before he turns to
- 2:22:32Speaker 2: me and asks, ooh, are you still hungry? Should we
- 2:22:35Speaker 2: stop somewhere and get something to eat?
- 2:22:37Speaker 3: So let me get this straight. He didn't like the restaurant.
- 2:22:39Speaker 3: He barely ate.
- 2:22:40Speaker 2: And now we're going somewhere else because he's hungry. At
- 2:22:43Speaker 2: this point, I'm not choosing a restaurant. I'm choosing the
- 2:22:46Speaker 2: first stop on a two-restaurant tour. And to quote our
- 2:22:50Speaker 2: favorite movie, Happy Gilmore, jackass. That is an incredible grievance.
- 2:22:56Speaker 3: 72-71. Well done.
- 2:22:58Speaker 4: It's a revenge grievance.
- 2:22:59Speaker 3: A revenge grievance. That's like a double grievance.
- 2:23:02Speaker 4: I love that. Oh. That's so fantastic.
- 2:23:05Speaker 10: Great callback to last week when, yes, her husband did
- 2:23:09Speaker 10: air that grievance. You and Spence had a great laugh
- 2:23:12Speaker 10: over it in crosstalk last week. And then revenge on
- 2:23:16Speaker 10: the husband airing the dirty laundry about how he's a
- 2:23:20Speaker 10: terrible restaurant picker, too.
- 2:23:21Speaker 4: I love this.
- 2:23:23Speaker 2: And by the way, now I'm in a position where
- 2:23:26Speaker 2: I feel like I need. I need to referee this
- 2:23:30Speaker 2: exchange of grievances.
- 2:23:31Speaker 4: Do we need to turn into the Maury show a
- 2:23:33Speaker 4: little bit here.
- 2:23:33Speaker 2: And just have them both on as guests?
- 2:23:37Speaker 3: I'm feeling like what we have here maybe is a
- 2:23:40Speaker 3: passive-aggressive situation from the husband, which if you've allowed the
- 2:23:49Speaker 3: other restaurant to be chosen and then you're going to
- 2:23:51Speaker 3: do the thing like, oh, I'm not very hungry, I
- 2:23:53Speaker 3: don't want anything.
- 2:23:55Speaker 4: That's not a typical man move if we're talking about Honesty. Okay?
- 2:24:00Speaker 3: So, you know what? Next time that we're at Smith's Marketplace.
- 2:24:05Speaker 2: We're on the road, I'd like both of you to
- 2:24:08Speaker 2: show up, and we'll bring extra headsets, and we can
- 2:24:11Speaker 2: talk this out in our airing of grievances.
- 2:24:13Speaker 4: Okay? Yeah.
- 2:24:15Speaker 2: You are not the great restaurant picker. A little Maury
- 2:24:20Speaker 2: Show shout-out for you. Jordan says, paying good money for
- 2:24:24Speaker 2: a concert only to watch the artist make the crowd
- 2:24:27Speaker 2: sing half of each song. Guys, I'm sorry to be
- 2:24:35Speaker 2: the one that has to tell you this. The music
- 2:24:39Speaker 2: is never as good at a concert. It's never as good.
- 2:24:45Speaker 3: The radio version, the studio recordings of the songs, with.
- 2:24:49Speaker 2: Very incredibly rare exception... are the best version of that
- 2:24:52Speaker 2: song you're going to get. Now, the experience of going
- 2:24:55Speaker 2: to a concert is still good. But the music itself
- 2:24:59Speaker 2: is never going to sound as good.
- 2:25:00Speaker 4: Yeah, that shouldn't be the reason you go, I would think, right?
- 2:25:04Speaker 3: So if you're hoping... Here's my grievance with concerts, right?
- 2:25:08Speaker 2: Especially when we're talking about, like, the iconic songs of
- 2:25:12Speaker 2: someone's catalog that everyone wants to sing along with. And
- 2:25:16Speaker 2: then they, like, because they're so sick of playing it
- 2:25:18Speaker 2: the same way, they take a little artistic riff on
- 2:25:21Speaker 2: it and they, like, change the cadence of the chorus
- 2:25:23Speaker 2: a little or something.
- 2:25:24Speaker 3: I can't stand that. Sing the song the way you're
- 2:25:26Speaker 3: going to sing it.
- 2:25:27Speaker 2: And, you know, I'd rather have you, like, give the
- 2:25:29Speaker 2: microphone to the crowd and make them sing half the
- 2:25:31Speaker 2: thing than you do the artist thing.
- 2:25:36Speaker 4: Good break.
- 2:25:38Speaker 3: Good grievance there.
- 2:25:41Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:25:42Speaker 2: We'll close it out next with some skillet trivia, some
- 2:25:47Speaker 2: sports trivia where you get two tickets to skillet.
- 2:25:52Speaker 3: At the Union Events Center.
- 2:25:54Speaker 2: Everyone's been stopping by Smith's today, stocking up on their drinks,
- 2:25:57Speaker 2: stocking up on their chips, stocking up on the breads
- 2:26:01Speaker 2: and things like that that they need for the weekend
- 2:26:04Speaker 2: barbecue for the tailgate party. especially if you're down here
- 2:26:07Speaker 2: in Daybreak, another spot that you can pick up everything
- 2:26:10Speaker 2: you need, the Southern Steer Butcher, 1705 North Redwood Road
- 2:26:14Speaker 2: down in Saratoga Springs. A short jaunt from where I'm
- 2:26:17Speaker 2: sitting right now, even if you're downtown Salt Lake City,
- 2:26:20Speaker 2: it's only going to take you a half hour to
- 2:26:21Speaker 2: get there. Go grab some armadillo eggs. Tell them you
- 2:26:26Speaker 2: want some marinated steak tips. Tell them that you want
- 2:26:29Speaker 2: that ribeye to be cut at about an inch and
- 2:26:31Speaker 2: a half. You want it nice and thick because you
- 2:26:33Speaker 2: like that cool, red, bloody center. You don't want a
- 2:26:36Speaker 2: well-done steak. And then ask them, hey, what am I
- 2:26:39Speaker 2: going to marinate this thing in? What am I going
- 2:26:41Speaker 2: to put on this steak to give it that perfect touch,
- 2:26:45Speaker 2: that perfect finish for Utah versus Kansas? Dan and Aubrey
- 2:26:49Speaker 2: and the whole crew down there are incredibly knowledgeable about
- 2:26:51Speaker 2: not only the high-quality meats that they have in stock,
- 2:26:54Speaker 2: but about the best way to maximize the flavor on
- 2:26:56Speaker 2: those things. Tell them that OC sent you, head down
- 2:26:59Speaker 2: to Southern Steer, stock up on all the meats that
- 2:27:02Speaker 2: you need, grab your drinks from Smith's, and boom, you
- 2:27:06Speaker 2: got yourself a tailgate party. We'll close it out next
- 2:27:10Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
- 2:27:17Speaker 5: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:27:20Speaker 5: the best youth football coverage. Here's O.C. from the Murdoch
- 2:27:23Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:27:26Speaker 9: 877-353-0700.
- 2:27:26Speaker 5: A pair of tickets at the Union.
- 2:27:30Speaker 4: Event Center to Skillet October 23rd.
- 2:27:31Speaker 3: Tell me the two points.
- 2:27:40Speaker 2: 4 teams that Kansas has played so far. 877-353-0700, their
- 2:27:45Speaker 2: third contest, Rice-Eccles Stadium tomorrow night. Who have the Jayhawks
- 2:27:49Speaker 2: faced in their two Power 4 contests so far this year?
- 2:27:53Speaker 9: 877-353-0700.
- 2:27:58Speaker 2: Big thanks to Smith's for having us out here today
- 2:28:00Speaker 2: in daybreak at the Smith's Marketplace. A huge thank you
- 2:28:04Speaker 2: to everyone who stopped by. Reminder, if you're looking for
- 2:28:07Speaker 2: a way to improve your home this weekend, Advanced Window

- 2:28:18Speaker 2: financing options if you qualify.

- 2:28:25Speaker 2: Spence is live at the Intermountain Snowmobile Expo at the
- 2:28:28Speaker 2: Western Sports Park in Farmington. So that's where you'll be
- 2:28:33Speaker 2: listening to him doing the drive today. That starts here
- 2:28:36Speaker 2: in just a couple of minutes. I took the liberty,
- 2:28:39Speaker 2: because people are worried about the poncho situation, I took
- 2:28:42Speaker 2: the liberty of seeing if we could solve this thing.
- 2:28:45Speaker 4: I went to Amazon.
- 2:28:47Speaker 2: If you are an Amazon Prime member, which I think
- 2:28:49Speaker 2: every American person probably is at this point, you can
- 2:28:53Speaker 2: get Extra long rain ponchos for adults. Extra long emergency
- 2:28:58Speaker 2: poncho with hood. Six, 12, or 24 family packs.
- 2:29:02Speaker 4: Okay?
- 2:29:02Speaker 2: These are white slash clear ponchos. A 24-pack is $ 30.
- 2:29:10Speaker 3: Plus shipping.
- 2:29:11Speaker 4: Oh, wait, no. Eligible for free shipping because you're already
- 2:29:15Speaker 4: a Prime member. All right?
- 2:29:17Speaker 2: So a dollar-ish per piece. A little over a dollar
- 2:29:20Speaker 2: per unit.
- 2:29:22Speaker 4: All right? Here's the key.
- 2:29:25Speaker 3: Eligible for free delivery tomorrow morning. They will arrive between
- 2:29:31Speaker 3: 4 and 8 a.m. tomorrow morning.
- 2:29:35Speaker 2: Here's what I want. I want some entrepreneurial young member
- 2:29:37Speaker 2: of the must. I need some young student at the
- 2:29:40Speaker 2: University of Utah, somebody who's broke and looking for a
- 2:29:44Speaker 2: way to make a quick buck, all right? I need
- 2:29:47Speaker 2: you to go order like a thousand of these rain
- 2:29:49Speaker 2: ponchos and sell them for five bucks apiece. Go stand
- 2:29:55Speaker 2: on the corner, southeast corner of the stadium, northeast corner
- 2:29:58Speaker 2: of the stadium. People walking through the tunnel to come
- 2:30:02Speaker 2: up from the parking lots. Sell these bad boys for
- 2:30:05Speaker 2: five bucks a pop. I'm telling you, in one hour,
- 2:30:08Speaker 2: you could make $ 5, 000. You got to share it with
- 2:30:11Speaker 2: your friends. You got to put one person at each corner. $ 1, 200.
- 2:30:15Speaker 3: A piece.
- 2:30:18Speaker 4: In one day full of work. See what we're doing here, people?
- 2:30:22Speaker 9: This.
- 2:30:24Speaker 2: Is the way we solve our white poncho problem for
- 2:30:26Speaker 2: the whiteout game tomorrow night at Rice Eccles Stadium.
- 2:30:31Speaker 3: Eligible for Amazon delivery?
- 2:30:32Speaker 5: Come on.
- 2:30:34Speaker 2: Or, better yet, go to your favorite Smith's Marketplace all
- 2:30:37Speaker 2: up and down the Wasatch Front and be like, hey,
