- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:42Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:46Speaker 1: that time George Jones met Porter Wagner in the bathroom
- 0:49Speaker 1: in Murdered Great art, in some amazing album cover Easter eggs,
- 0:53Speaker 1: plus your voicemails, text emails, comments, dms, and as always,
- 0:57Speaker 1: a whole lot of rosie. This is the pot cast
- 1:00Speaker 1: for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who
- 1:03Speaker 1: know that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Disgrace Lands where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:08Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All right,
- 1:10Speaker 1: disc goes, let's get into it, all right. Welcome into
- 1:24Speaker 1: the after Party, everybody, I was in Boston this past weekend.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It was a fantastic time to be there. World Cup
- 1:30Speaker 1: was in town at Gillette out in Foxboro, but the
- 1:34Speaker 1: city was just filled with people who were there for
- 1:37Speaker 1: that event, and it was this beautiful weather. People are
- 1:39Speaker 1: outside rolling around. Everybody was in a good mood. It
- 1:43Speaker 1: was great, had an awesome time, ran into some old
- 1:47Speaker 1: friends on the street. Took my son to some great
- 1:51Speaker 1: music shops, music stores, record stores, and I visited one
- 1:54Speaker 1: of the last great record stores in the city, maybe
- 1:57Speaker 1: in the world actually this past weekend when I was
- 1:59Speaker 1: there in Boston, Looney Tunes on Harvard Ave in Allston, Massachusetts.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Looney Tunes used to be a mass ave between Harvard
- 2:07Speaker 1: and Central Squares. Anyways, it's type of record store. It's dark,
- 2:12Speaker 1: dingy affair. You know, you might sprain your ankle on
- 2:16Speaker 1: your descent down the stairs into this place, and once
- 2:21Speaker 1: you're inside, you're gonna find yourself completely overwhelmed by records,
- 2:25Speaker 1: like they're just everywhere. Everywhere. That's all there is. I
- 2:29Speaker 1: don't know. There might have been CDs. There was some
- 2:32Speaker 1: pat The guy who owns that he had some instruments
- 2:34Speaker 1: in the back that he, you know, kind of fiddles
- 2:36Speaker 1: with while he's while he's there at the store. I
- 2:40Speaker 1: don't know if there were cassettes, but they're just records everywhere,
- 2:44Speaker 1: everywhere in super knowledgeable owner obviously, and with knowledge on
- 2:50Speaker 1: all kinds of music from all types of genres. And there's,
- 2:54Speaker 1: like I said, just again, music in records, vinyl just
- 2:57Speaker 1: it's it's like it's eating you. And you walk into
- 2:59Speaker 1: this place and Pat the owner has knowledge that most
- 3:06Speaker 1: of us don't have when it comes to music. So
- 3:08Speaker 1: it's a very great, very cool experience, especially for my son. Now,
- 3:12Speaker 1: when I was there, I couldn't decide even more to look,
- 3:17Speaker 1: never mind what I wanted to buy, if I wanted
- 3:19Speaker 1: to buy anything at all, I couldn't decide between a
- 3:23Speaker 1: Porter Wagoner album nineteen sixty eight's Carrol County Accident and
- 3:27Speaker 1: a very cool looking Misfits reissue seven inch. It's like
- 3:33Speaker 1: a record store day thing that I'd never seen before.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I went with the Porter Wagoner album because Porter is
- 3:40Speaker 1: on my mind a bunch lately. He's one of the
- 3:43Speaker 1: more fascinating characters from country music history. Blonde, tall dude,
- 3:49Speaker 1: blonde pompador, just striking image. He wore these like Ryanstone
- 3:54Speaker 1: nudy suits, tremendous singer, massive star, one of those celebrities
- 3:59Speaker 1: who stardom and fame has eroded over over time, and
- 4:05Speaker 1: we just don't understand how big and popular and famous
- 4:09Speaker 1: this guy was. And that happens to a number of
- 4:13Speaker 1: celebrities over time. Anyways, Porter Wagoner is the villain in
- 4:18Speaker 1: the Dolly Parton's story, the story that we just put
- 4:22Speaker 1: together for you guys. It's coming out soon in a
- 4:24Speaker 1: couple of weeks. Porter introduced Dolly Parton to the world
- 4:28Speaker 1: on his TV show back in the nineteen sixties, and
- 4:31Speaker 1: you're gonna hear again. You can hear all about that
- 4:33Speaker 1: in the Dolly Parton episode that we got coming your way.
- 4:35Speaker 1: But Porter Wagoner shows up in the George Jones story
- 4:39Speaker 1: as well. Not in our episode with George that we
- 4:41Speaker 1: just released this week, but in the bathroom with George
- 4:44Speaker 1: back in the early nineteen seventies at the Ryman Auditorium
- 4:48Speaker 1: in Nashville during a live televised broadcast of The Grand
- 4:52Speaker 1: Old Aubrey Now. Porter was in the restroom relieving himself
- 4:57Speaker 1: between televised segments. George Jones followed him into the restroom,
- 5:01Speaker 1: snuck up behind Porter George came up behind again, this
- 5:06Speaker 1: just dashing, tall, blonde Ryan Stone clad Porter Wagoner and
- 5:13Speaker 1: George Jones is drunk high on diet pills, and he
- 5:18Speaker 1: comes up behind Porter Wagoner, who again is standing at
- 5:22Speaker 1: the urinal, and George very aggressively grabs Porter by his junk,
- 5:28Speaker 1: squeezes and twists. Porter howls and pain in. George Jones
- 5:35Speaker 1: howls right back with those golden pipes and he shouts,
- 5:39Speaker 1: I want to see what Tammy's so proud of. George
- 5:43Speaker 1: Jones was referring to his wife, Tammy Wynette, and to
- 5:47Speaker 1: the affair that he believed that Tammy Wynette was having
- 5:50Speaker 1: with Porter Wagoner. Porter Wagoner was rumored to be very
- 5:54Speaker 1: well endowed. There was a lot of stories about Porter
- 5:57Speaker 1: Wagoner in Nashville when it came to women, but there
- 5:59Speaker 1: was no affair according to the research I've done. I
- 6:03Speaker 1: don't know, maybe there was, who knows, but it looks
- 6:05Speaker 1: like there actually was no affair here. It was just
- 6:07Speaker 1: George's jealousy getting the best of him, but there was.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Porter Wagoner now covered his nuty suit, covered as pants anyways,
- 6:16Speaker 1: covered in urine. He's going to go on television in
- 6:19Speaker 1: a couple of minutes here, so he misses the next
- 6:23Speaker 1: segment and Ernest Tubb has to sit in for him.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm not sure how George Jones spent the rest of
- 6:29Speaker 1: his night. This is a story that was that George
- 6:32Speaker 1: tells in his book. He's talked about it in interviews
- 6:36Speaker 1: in the past. I can't believe some of these interviews
- 6:39Speaker 1: with George Jones. They're completely unhinged. They would never happen today.
- 6:45Speaker 1: These interviews that he did later in life in the
- 6:46Speaker 1: nineteen nineties, they would never happen today, and they're just
- 6:51Speaker 1: out there now. If you look at George Jones again,
- 6:54Speaker 1: the subject of our episode this week, that story I
- 6:56Speaker 1: just told you about Porter Wagoner and George Jones is
- 6:59Speaker 1: not intereps. So that's what I wanted to give it
- 7:01Speaker 1: to you here. But if you look at George Jones,
- 7:04Speaker 1: he's a very clean cut looking dude, even in the
- 7:06Speaker 1: later years. I mean, his hair is a little bit
- 7:08Speaker 1: longer by country standards, for sure, but it's still this
- 7:11Speaker 1: sort of like hard shell pompadour. And back in the
- 7:14Speaker 1: early days when he was more of a rockabilly guy.
- 7:17Speaker 1: For a brief minute there it was like a wasn't
- 7:20Speaker 1: even a pompa door. It's like a crew cut, like
- 7:22Speaker 1: a high and tight crew cut. When you look at
- 7:25Speaker 1: the image, you know, you listen to George Jones's pristine voice,
- 7:30Speaker 1: you look at the images of him, there's little in
- 7:33Speaker 1: common with that image, between the image and the behavior,
- 7:37Speaker 1: the crazed behavior. It's the same for most country artists.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Most appear to be clean cut and conservative, at least
- 7:44Speaker 1: by rock and roll and punk rock and heavy metal standards,
- 7:47Speaker 1: the rock and roll and punk and heavy metal standards
- 7:49Speaker 1: of my youth anyway. But beneath the clean cut image,
- 7:53Speaker 1: country artists were, as we now know, as wild and
- 7:56Speaker 1: transgressive as the punks, the metal heads, and the rock
- 7:59Speaker 1: and rollers. And I have to have met, and I
- 8:02Speaker 1: have to admit this is what attracted me to country
- 8:04Speaker 1: music in when I was a kid, not a kid
- 8:06Speaker 1: when I was I don't know, eh, nineteen twenty twenty one,
- 8:13Speaker 1: In that I can't remember when I first took a
- 8:16Speaker 1: real interest in country music, but it was early adulthood,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and it was because of this reason. It was because
- 8:22Speaker 1: learning that Hank Williams, the guy who sang my Bucket's
- 8:26Speaker 1: Got a Hole in It, the song that I'd heard
- 8:29Speaker 1: as a kid that I thought was beyond dumb, that
- 8:33Speaker 1: dude was a raving lunatic hold On who he was
- 8:35Speaker 1: committed to an asylum before drinking himself to death in
- 8:39Speaker 1: the backseat of a Cadillac. You know, I learned that.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I learned that Johnny Cash, the old looking dude who
- 8:43Speaker 1: hung out with Willie Nelson, the other old looking dude,
- 8:46Speaker 1: that Johnny Cash got blitz on pills one day and
- 8:48Speaker 1: set fire to a national park, and it was an
- 8:50Speaker 1: accident that wiped out nearly an entire population of an
- 8:53Speaker 1: endangered species. It was the stories about country music. It
- 8:57Speaker 1: was the stories that got me the music. It was
- 9:02Speaker 1: the stories that first interested me. The story about the
- 9:06Speaker 1: Spade Cooley murder string being Merle Haggard in prison, shotgun,
- 9:10Speaker 1: Willie Nelson, Farren Young Graham, Parson, Steve Earle. It made
- 9:13Speaker 1: the music that much more interesting to me. There was
- 9:17Speaker 1: contrast tension between the image of these artists and their behavior.
- 9:22Speaker 1: You know, how could dudes who sounded so straight live
- 9:25Speaker 1: so dangerous, so crooked? And you know, I was onto
- 9:30Speaker 1: country music, classic country music, I should say, at a
- 9:34Speaker 1: fairly early age, to the great annoyance of my hardcore
- 9:38Speaker 1: bandmates and friends. But I didn't care, and soon it
- 9:41Speaker 1: wasn't just about the artists making the music and their crimes.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It was about the crimes inside, the stories that these
- 9:50Speaker 1: artists were telling in the songs that they were singing.
- 9:53Speaker 1: The murder of the Knoxville Girl, the hanging from the
- 9:57Speaker 1: long black veil, the redheaded stranger night the lights went
- 10:00Speaker 1: out in Georgia, Johnny Cash and his cocaine blues, George
- 10:04Speaker 1: Jones still doing time in the fatal crash affair and
- 10:07Speaker 1: cover up at the center of Porter Wagoner's Carroll County accident.
- 10:10Speaker 1: A great fucking song. By the way, this song is
- 10:14Speaker 1: this It's a true crime podcast series in and of itself,
- 10:17Speaker 1: the Carroll County accident, which leads me to the hear
- 10:20Speaker 1: and now, okay up to this weekend where you know,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I'm purchasing that Porter Wagoner album in Looney Tunes in Boston.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's all crime in music. It's always been crime in music.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Crime in music is the most interesting combination, and you
- 10:37Speaker 1: probably get more of it in country music than you
- 10:40Speaker 1: do in punk, in rock or in metal. And from
- 10:44Speaker 1: an extremely authentic point of view as well. When George
- 10:47Speaker 1: Jones wrote about stabbing and killing a friend in Life
- 10:49Speaker 1: to Go. It's believable when you hear it. When Porter
- 10:53Speaker 1: Wagoner sings about the affair in the Carroll County Accident
- 10:56Speaker 1: or in any number of songs on his excellent album
- 10:59Speaker 1: Cold Heart Facts of Life, you believe them because Porter
- 11:02Speaker 1: Wagoner kind of looks like a dude who knows a
- 11:04Speaker 1: thing or two about an affair or two. That violence,
- 11:07Speaker 1: that infidelity. It's spilled out into real life in the
- 11:11Speaker 1: bathroom in the Ryman Auditorium back in the early seventies
- 11:13Speaker 1: there with these two guys, and it's one of the
- 11:15Speaker 1: many stories just like it from country music's wild history.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And it's a history that we've barely scratched the surface
- 11:22Speaker 1: of here in Disgraceland incredibly. I mean, we've got episodes
- 11:25Speaker 1: on Johnny Paycheck and Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Merle
- 11:28Speaker 1: Haggard and now George Jones. But there's so much more
- 11:32Speaker 1: to tell. Anyways, check out the George Jones episode Brace
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yourselves for the Dolly Parton episode that's coming. It's gonna
- 11:40Speaker 1: be a doozy, all right, Dolly Parton, Isn't isn't coming
- 11:44Speaker 1: up for a couple weeks in the meantime, you got
- 11:45Speaker 1: George Jones in your feed, Like I said, then in
- 11:48Speaker 1: the rewind slot. Coming up right after this here after
- 11:52Speaker 1: party is our episode on Jennifer Hudson and Jennifer Hudson's story,
- 11:57Speaker 1: the tragedy there, the triple homicide that and of itself
- 12:01Speaker 1: could have been a country song, just brutal, brutal. Anyways,
- 12:07Speaker 1: that's going to be in your feed right after this
- 12:08Speaker 1: after Party, and then next week our brand spanking new
- 12:11Speaker 1: episode on Sonic Youth, on Kim and Thurston, on one
- 12:16Speaker 1: of the coolest bands of all time, and on the
- 12:19Speaker 1: true crime at the center of one of the coolest
- 12:22Speaker 1: album covers of all time, Sonic Youse Goo. That's right,
- 12:27Speaker 1: you know the cover. It's the one with that illustration
- 12:30Speaker 1: of the couple with the woman smoking the rimmon pedobone
- 12:34Speaker 1: illustration the two the pair. They look like a couple
- 12:37Speaker 1: of kids who could be on a hanging out with
- 12:39Speaker 1: Velvet Underground or something. Who was that couple in the illustration?
- 12:43Speaker 1: That's what I wanted to know on that album cover
- 12:45Speaker 1: on Goo and what was up with that incredible quote
- 12:50Speaker 1: next to their image? I stole my sister's boyfriend. It
- 12:53Speaker 1: was all whirlwind, heat and flash. Within a week, we
- 12:57Speaker 1: killed my parents and hit the road. What the hell
- 13:00Speaker 1: was that all about? Well, it's about one of the
- 13:04Speaker 1: most gruesome and unjust true crimes in history, and one
- 13:09Speaker 1: that features a real rock and roll hero. We're gonna
- 13:12Speaker 1: tell you that story and the story of Sonic Youth
- 13:15Speaker 1: and try to really drill down into what made Kim
- 13:17Speaker 1: Gordon so damn cool. You'll get that, like I said,
- 13:21Speaker 1: next week, and when you're listening to this episode, which
- 13:24Speaker 1: is like I said, very much about the cover of Goo,
- 13:26Speaker 1: be thinking about what's the coolest album cover that you've
- 13:31Speaker 1: ever seen? Does it get cooler than Goo? Okay? What
- 13:35Speaker 1: album just held you transfixed? What album just captured your
- 13:41Speaker 1: imagination arrested you? Just you're sitting there, You're I don't know,
- 13:46Speaker 1: you're fifteen years old, sixteen years old. You're in your bedroom.
- 13:50Speaker 1: You know, you're just you got your stereo there. It's
- 13:52Speaker 1: one of those solid state one pieces with the record
- 13:55Speaker 1: player and the CD player and the double cassette player
- 13:57Speaker 1: and the receiver all in one. It's like the small
- 14:00Speaker 1: little black box connects right to the speakers, and you
- 14:03Speaker 1: got this album in your hand, and you just can't
- 14:05Speaker 1: stop looking at it, you can't stop listening to it.
- 14:09Speaker 1: All right, what is that album? What's the coolest album
- 14:12Speaker 1: cover that you can think of? Let us know, all right,
- 14:15Speaker 1: that's gonna be the question of the week next week.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six, six six three eight.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Give me a call, let me know your answer. You
- 14:20Speaker 1: can leave me a voicemail, you can send me a
- 14:22Speaker 1: text again at six one seven nine oh six six
- 14:24Speaker 1: six three eight. You might hear your answer on next
- 14:27Speaker 1: week's after party. Before that, though, in this episode, we're
- 14:32Speaker 1: gonna get you all primed up for the Sonic Youth
- 14:34Speaker 1: Goose story that we've got coming your way. Next week,
- 14:36Speaker 1: Zeth and I are gonna be talking about hidden Easter
- 14:39Speaker 1: eggs on album covers, Beastie Boys, Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden,
- 14:43Speaker 1: Harry Nilson, and more that's coming up in the exclusive
- 14:46Speaker 1: section of this after party. Go to disgracelandpod dot com
- 14:49Speaker 1: sign up to become a Disgracelant All Access member and

- 14:57Speaker 1: we're gonna take a quick break and we'll get back
- 15:00Speaker 1: in just a moment with your voicemails, text emails and more.
- 15:16Speaker 1: All right, guys, I am back. It's super early. You
- 15:19Speaker 1: could probably tell from the sound of my voice. This
- 15:21Speaker 1: coffee you ain't doing what it's supposed to be doing. Man,
- 15:24Speaker 1: I don't know what's up. You're ever going to make
- 15:27Speaker 1: a coffee in the morning, put the beans in, get
- 15:30Speaker 1: it all ready to grind. You drink your coffee. You
- 15:35Speaker 1: drink your second coffee, your third coffee, fourth coffee. Suddenly
- 15:40Speaker 1: it's lunchtime and you're starving, and you eat, and then
- 15:44Speaker 1: you know it's one o'clock, two o'clock, whatever it is
- 15:48Speaker 1: after that, and you're just exhausted and you have a
- 15:51Speaker 1: blazing headache, and you're like, what the hell is going on?
- 15:55Speaker 1: And you realize you haven't had any caffeine that day,
- 15:58Speaker 1: even though you've had like three cups of corn. But
- 16:01Speaker 1: you are an idiot if you're like me. And you
- 16:04Speaker 1: went and you ground up decaf coffee beans and you've
- 16:08Speaker 1: been drinking decalf all morning, and now you're exhausted and
- 16:11Speaker 1: you got a headache and you're in a bad mood.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Can't tell you how many times I've done that. Not
- 16:15Speaker 1: the sharpest tool in the shed. Sometimes it's early morning
- 16:18Speaker 1: you're fumbling about trying to get it going. Anyways, I
- 16:21Speaker 1: got the high test stuff this morning, but I'm just
- 16:25Speaker 1: I had some intense, quick travel, quick turn around to
- 16:28Speaker 1: Boston and back this weekend. A little little dragon coffee
- 16:32Speaker 1: will do its thing, though, I'm confident. Anyways, I'm in
- 16:35Speaker 1: the phone booth. It's the one across the hall, hanging
- 16:38Speaker 1: on the telephone with you. Guys. You know where I'm at.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Last week's question of the week, we're talking about which
- 16:43Speaker 1: singer just arrested you just stops you in your tracks,
- 16:47Speaker 1: just grabs you by the neck and makes you listen.
- 16:51Speaker 1: The sound of their voice is just so compelling. George
- 16:53Speaker 1: Jones does that to me? This one from I hope
- 16:57Speaker 1: I'm saying this correctly. Betto and where are you? You're
- 17:00Speaker 1: in the two one three?
- 17:02Speaker 2: Hey Jake, this is Betto from La responding to your
- 17:06Speaker 2: question about what singers stopped me in my tracks. I
- 17:09Speaker 2: have to say Marisa Franklin, Donnie Hathaway and internationally and
- 17:20Speaker 2: Salis Kita. That's what's up.
- 17:23Speaker 1: That is what's up. Thank you, Betto. I was I'm
- 17:27Speaker 1: going to talk about Donny Hathaway here in particular because
- 17:31Speaker 1: it most directly addresses the part of this question that
- 17:37Speaker 1: I can't quite articulate the right way, which is just
- 17:40Speaker 1: that thing you know, you know, when you hear you're
- 17:42Speaker 1: just arrested. I said that before. You just hear the
- 17:44Speaker 1: voice and it just stops you. It literally happened to
- 17:47Speaker 1: me with Donny Hathaway the other day. I was getting
- 17:48Speaker 1: my haircut. I was in the barber's chair, and you know,
- 17:52Speaker 1: Juan at El said, he's you know, he's doing his
- 17:55Speaker 1: thing and we're talking and and it's just Donny Hathaways
- 17:59Speaker 1: sing and jealous guy, and it was just one of
- 18:03Speaker 1: those things I just I just had to be like,
- 18:05Speaker 1: hold up, listen to that. God, this guy can sing
- 18:09Speaker 1: just fucking incredible. It was the live version from seventy
- 18:15Speaker 1: two Donnie Hathaway's live album, and I got to admit,
- 18:19Speaker 1: for a guy whose voice I find to be completely compelling,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I do not listen to Donnie Hathaway enough. I just forget.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I just forget so better. I'm gonna take your voicemail
- 18:32Speaker 1: as a reminder, Thank you, buddy. I'm gonna be pumping
- 18:35Speaker 1: out the Donnie Hathaway today. All right, let's check out
- 18:38Speaker 1: the three six so chee chi.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Wow, this podcast is amazing. I have learned so many
- 18:46Speaker 3: things in the last week. I'm calling to answer your
- 18:49Speaker 3: question of the week quotes that one person with the
- 18:52Speaker 3: voice that just takes me there and for me, it's
- 18:54Speaker 3: got to be Mego Case. We're going to present I
- 18:58Speaker 3: Feel the Void every time. She really likes loose and
- 19:04Speaker 3: I actually wanted to answer an old question who is
- 19:07Speaker 3: not punk but is punk? And for me that is
- 19:10Speaker 3: the band The Knife. If you haven't highly recommend, just
- 19:15Speaker 3: just giveralism. It's pretty cool.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Okay, thanks, I love you.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Oh wow, okay three six so oh yes, Nico Case
- 19:24Speaker 1: one thousand percent deep red Bells, fantastic, just everything's kind
- 19:30Speaker 1: of fantastic. And speaking of murder ballads and the whole
- 19:32Speaker 1: kind of like creepy country thing, She's a great modern
- 19:36Speaker 1: version of that. Not a psychopath like George Jones, so
- 19:41Speaker 1: and someone I have a ton of respect for. Great
- 19:44Speaker 1: artist and yes, great singer. Who'd you mentioned the Knife?
- 19:48Speaker 1: It's funny you mentioned the Knife. I was just thinking
- 19:51Speaker 1: of the Knife. I heard some song on some dumb
- 19:54Speaker 1: TV show and I was like, this song sucks, but
- 19:57Speaker 1: it reminds me of something good. What is it that
- 19:59Speaker 1: it's reminded and it was heartbeats by by the Knifehere
- 20:03Speaker 1: we talking about the same artists here, I think we are.
- 20:05Speaker 1: I think we are. Anyways, I appreciate you three six
- 20:08Speaker 1: to soho, thanks for calling. Call back anytime six one
- 20:11Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. You guys
- 20:14Speaker 1: want to hit me up, that's how to do it,
- 20:16Speaker 1: voicemail and text. Let's do some texts here. Let's go
- 20:20Speaker 1: to the three one seven here. Hey, this is Flow
- 20:23Speaker 1: from the three one seven. You said to your son's
- 20:25Speaker 1: a huge Killers fan, seeing as we spent adequate time
- 20:29Speaker 1: discussing great covers, and as I mentioned, I'm a massive
- 20:32Speaker 1: Marssi fan. Here you go, can't have the Killers without
- 20:35Speaker 1: Morrissey And Flow sends in the Killers version of why
- 20:41Speaker 1: don't you find out for yourself the Morrissey song? You know,
- 20:46Speaker 1: I don't think about this song that much, and it's
- 20:49Speaker 1: I don't think about the correlation between The Killers and
- 20:51Speaker 1: marsseye and I should. It's an obvious one, and uh,
- 20:55Speaker 1: it just doesn't. I don't know, it doesn't register for me.
- 20:59Speaker 1: You know, I was talking to the Killers the other
- 21:01Speaker 1: day with my wife talking. I said, talking to the Killers.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Talking about The Killers with my wife the other day.
- 21:07Speaker 1: And the Killers are interesting because their first album, in
- 21:10Speaker 1: our opinion, is their best. Not that their other albums
- 21:13Speaker 1: aren't really good, they are second one in particular. But
- 21:18Speaker 1: which artists legit like their first not not albums where
- 21:22Speaker 1: they come out and their first album is great and
- 21:23Speaker 1: then they just kind of fade away. That happens a lot,
- 21:25Speaker 1: but they come out with their first album is just
- 21:27Speaker 1: the best. It's the best. You can't fuck with it.
- 21:29Speaker 1: It's it's like kind of like the Strokes, like they
- 21:31Speaker 1: never really they made great albums afterward. For sure, they're
- 21:35Speaker 1: still making great music, but that first album is the
- 21:37Speaker 1: best album. And this isn't a thing where I'm like, oh, yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 1: have you heard their early shit. That's not what I'm
- 21:41Speaker 1: doing here at all. I just legitimately think that when
- 21:45Speaker 1: it comes to the Killers and when it comes to
- 21:46Speaker 1: the Strokes, that their first albums are the best. And
- 21:48Speaker 1: that's a good question. Which other artists, you know, first
- 21:51Speaker 1: album was their best? I don't know. Made me think
- 21:55Speaker 1: of you guys. I was like, oh, that's a question
- 21:56Speaker 1: of the week. Hubba from the three one four right said, Hey,
- 21:59Speaker 1: end of the world mixed Tall Dark Stranger by Buck Owens.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Is that a Harlin Howard song? Two of five Metallica
- 22:07Speaker 1: Queens Wright, January fourteenth, nineteen eighty nine, BJCC Arena, Birmingham, Alabama.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I was in a massive people waiting to enter, and
- 22:17Speaker 1: for some reason they were late opening the arena entrances
- 22:21Speaker 1: and the section we were waiting in had walls that
- 22:23Speaker 1: funneled people towards the set of doors, and the crowds
- 22:26Speaker 1: started getting frustrated, and people at the door started chanting angrily. One, two, three, four,
- 22:31Speaker 1: opened up the fucking door of five, six, seven eight,
- 22:33Speaker 1: opened up the fucking gate. A couple of employees almost
- 22:36Speaker 1: opened the doors, and the peoples at the back started
- 22:39Speaker 1: pressing forward, crushing us all together against the arena. None
- 22:43Speaker 1: of the groans of pain of people yelling did anything
- 22:45Speaker 1: to back off. We were crushed that way for more
- 22:49Speaker 1: than ten minutes before the venue finally opened. A few
- 22:52Speaker 1: of the doors spaced apart, and I was crushed by
- 22:55Speaker 1: the surgeon crowd into one of the closed doors next
- 22:57Speaker 1: to an open one. My buddy was at the edge
- 22:59Speaker 1: of the open door. We had to work together to
- 23:01Speaker 1: drag my body to the open door. Oh damn, this
- 23:03Speaker 1: sounds freaking harrowing and fall into the doorway, finally escaping
- 23:08Speaker 1: the press of the crowd. I hadn't thought about that
- 23:10Speaker 1: part of that night for years, but all the pain
- 23:13Speaker 1: and sounds came back while hearing the story of those
- 23:16Speaker 1: poor Liverpool fans rushing forward Patrick at the two oh five, Patrick,
- 23:22Speaker 1: thank you for your text. That sounds horrifying. Patrick, guys
- 23:27Speaker 1: is referencing the Hillsborough disaster episode that we did in
- 23:32Speaker 1: Because we're here in World Cup week, World Cup weeks months?
- 23:37Speaker 1: How long is the World Cup? It's like three weeks, right,
- 23:39Speaker 1: something like that sounds scary as hell? Three h two right,
- 23:43Speaker 1: saying Hey, very excited to inform you that I just
- 23:45Speaker 1: turned on a new listener. As I was walking my
- 23:47Speaker 1: dog in the park and wearing my Disgraceland T shirt,
- 23:50Speaker 1: a guy came up and commented on it. Turns out
- 23:52Speaker 1: he's a rock fan and I was able to recommend
- 23:54Speaker 1: to your podcast. As he was walking away, he took
- 23:57Speaker 1: out his phone to look it up on Spotify, and
- 23:59Speaker 1: as I was passing and again, he told me he
- 24:00Speaker 1: was starting with the Anthony Bourdain episode. So I just
- 24:03Speaker 1: want to say hi there, friend, friend, in Delaware who
- 24:06Speaker 1: just got turned on to Disgraceland. I hope you're really
- 24:09Speaker 1: enjoying it. I am three to zero two. Thank you.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I appreciate that. Very cool of you to be extending
- 24:15Speaker 1: the sort of Disgraceland community here. Love that eight six
- 24:20Speaker 1: so rights in. Hey, Jake, it's trip from the eight
- 24:22Speaker 1: six to oh. I sent a text about a month
- 24:24Speaker 1: ago concerning the upcoming Jim Morrison Doors episode. But I
- 24:27Speaker 1: had surgery two days before, so I don't know how
- 24:30Speaker 1: can so I don't know how coherent it was. I
- 24:35Speaker 1: commented on Robbie from the Doors this recent book and why,
- 24:39Speaker 1: in my opinion, it was the best Doors book. Robbie
- 24:42Speaker 1: separated the myth from the band and from Jim in
- 24:44Speaker 1: general in a way that hasn't been done before. He
- 24:46Speaker 1: talked about Jim possibly dying from heroin and explains about
- 24:49Speaker 1: his own smack addiction in the nineteen eighties. Anyway, looking
- 24:52Speaker 1: forward to the Doors episode, Peace from the Northeast eight
- 24:55Speaker 1: six oh. Appreciate you, man. Yeah, I don't spoil it here,
- 25:00Speaker 1: but I will tell you that Robbie's some of Robbie's
- 25:03Speaker 1: information from that book makes it into the episode and
- 25:06Speaker 1: makes the argument that I'm making that much more compelling.
- 25:10Speaker 1: I'll say that. Okay, six one seven nine oh six
- 25:13Speaker 1: six six three. You guys want to hit me up
- 25:15Speaker 1: talk about anything, voicemail and text, that's how you do it.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Can also email me Disgrace lamppod at gmail dot com.
- 25:22Speaker 1: We're gonna do that on the other side of this break.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Talk to you in a second. All right, guys, we
- 25:39Speaker 1: are back. Disgrace lamppod at gmail dot com. I appreciate
- 25:43Speaker 1: the thoughtful emails. I appreciate talking to you guys, connecting
- 25:46Speaker 1: with you guys every week. This one comes from Rob McDonald,
- 25:51Speaker 1: subject Hillsborough message. Hey, Jake, just wanted to say congratulations
- 25:55Speaker 1: on your episode covering the Hillsborough disaster. It's a difficult
- 25:58Speaker 1: subject matter and you handled it with real care, clarity
- 26:02Speaker 1: and respect. As a Liverpool fan, I really appreciate the
- 26:05Speaker 1: tone and the way you gave space to both the
- 26:07Speaker 1: human impact and the wider context. A great song about
- 26:10Speaker 1: the wider issue is Billy Bragg's Scousers. Never by the
- 26:13Speaker 1: Sun is a skouser or schoozer. I always pronounce it incorrectly.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I apologize it means a Liverpool thing, right, Yeah, however,
- 26:25Speaker 1: happy I made you with the Hillsboro episode. I'm upsetting
- 26:28Speaker 1: you now, Rob, I am sure of it, and I apologize. Anyways,
- 26:31Speaker 1: Rob was on to say, hey, he released it after
- 26:33Speaker 1: the phone hacking scandal investigations into NewsCorp in twenty eleven
- 26:37Speaker 1: of protest against the broader issues around tabloid media. Thanks
- 26:42Speaker 1: again for your thoughtful episode. You got it, Rob, Thank
- 26:46Speaker 1: you for the email. Appreciate you. I don't know this
- 26:48Speaker 1: Billy Bragg song. Billy Bragg a lot like what I
- 26:51Speaker 1: was saying with Donnie Hathaway, someone who I absolutely love
- 26:55Speaker 1: and somebody who I just do not listen to enough.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I never think to listen to him. I wish I
- 26:59Speaker 1: had a little mental note in my head that I
- 27:01Speaker 1: could just you know, I open up the Spotify app
- 27:03Speaker 1: or whatever, I go to my my shelves to pull
- 27:07Speaker 1: a record, and what do I want to listen to?
- 27:09Speaker 1: And you know, we're all the same, we all end
- 27:10Speaker 1: up going back to the same shit. I got Billy
- 27:14Speaker 1: Bragg albums in my collection, Donnie Hathaway, and I just
- 27:17Speaker 1: don't listen to him enough, and I need to, and
- 27:18Speaker 1: I appreciate the recommendation. Rob, Thank you very much. Disgrace
- 27:22Speaker 1: Lampod at gmail dot com. You guys want to send
- 27:24Speaker 1: me an email about anything recommendations. You want to hear
- 27:26Speaker 1: recommendations from me, music recommendations, you can get that in
- 27:30Speaker 1: the Hollywood Land feed over in the Rap Party episodes
- 27:34Speaker 1: that Zeth does. I'm in there every week giving you
- 27:37Speaker 1: music recommendations alongside Zeth's movie recommendations. See how that works
- 27:42Speaker 1: at Disgrace Lampot. On the socials, you want to hit
- 27:44Speaker 1: me up on Instagram, Facebook, even X once in a while.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Once in a while I'll open the X app. I'm
- 27:54Speaker 1: making a habit of it because I'd like my sanity.
- 27:58Speaker 1: I could say the same about all the platforms. Oh,
- 28:01Speaker 1: it's a love hate relationship. No, it's not love, and
- 28:07Speaker 1: I don't like to hate anything, but you know it's
- 28:09Speaker 1: tough anyways. In response to our Marilyn Manson episode e
- 28:13Speaker 1: dot showsted on Disgrace Centrites, Hey, I saw Marilyn Manson
- 28:16Speaker 1: at a Dave and Busters a few years ago. That's
- 28:21Speaker 1: why I wanted to read this. Just the idea of
- 28:23Speaker 1: Marilyn Manson at a Dave and Busters is hysterical to me.
- 28:27Speaker 1: And he looked like he was over his own gimmick
- 28:29Speaker 1: twenty five years ago to be in your mid fifties,
- 28:32Speaker 1: but role playing nineteen ninety nine forever too much even
- 28:35Speaker 1: for him, Which brings me to this thing. I've been
- 28:38Speaker 1: thinking about how some artists just get they get stuck
- 28:42Speaker 1: in that caricature of themselves that they created years ago.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I was watching this last Minelli documentary over the weekend,
- 28:49Speaker 1: and it is she talked about it, where she was
- 28:54Speaker 1: the Sequin girl. She had to be that girl whenever
- 28:57Speaker 1: she was out in public, even socially with people who
- 28:59Speaker 1: were not just extremely close with her, but even like acquaintances.
- 29:03Speaker 1: That's who she had to be. And you know, I
- 29:06Speaker 1: think she transcended that in a lot of ways. But
- 29:09Speaker 1: it must suck for people. Well, actually I don't give
- 29:12Speaker 1: a shit about Marilyn Man, said Brian Warner, but you
- 29:14Speaker 1: know what I'm saying, Like, it just must suck as
- 29:16Speaker 1: an artist to be stuck in that thing forever. And
- 29:20Speaker 1: I think certain artists find ways to transcend it and
- 29:23Speaker 1: move beyond it and to grow and to not get stuck.
- 29:28Speaker 1: And I don't know, I don't know the trick. I
- 29:29Speaker 1: don't know what the trick is. I don't know how
- 29:31Speaker 1: they do it. I haven't really thought about it enough,
- 29:33Speaker 1: but it's interesting and I know it's applicable to some
- 29:35Speaker 1: of the stories we're telling here, so I'll probably get
- 29:37Speaker 1: into this concept a little bit more. More artists spotted
- 29:42Speaker 1: out in the public. In response to our Jim Sullivan
- 29:45Speaker 1: disappearance story that we had on Instagram, Jay underscore Shnobi writes, Hey,
- 29:51Speaker 1: just seeing him yesterday at Walgreens. That's interesting, man. I
- 29:53Speaker 1: go to Walgreens all the time. I've never seen missing
- 29:55Speaker 1: folk artists roaming the aisles, but I'll take your word
- 29:58Speaker 1: for it. Mark Burnwer was sent to a message on
- 30:00Speaker 1: Instagram about Tommy James, about how he's an underrated singer,
- 30:04Speaker 1: how the Sean Dell's were an underrated band. And you know,
- 30:07Speaker 1: Mark is not wrong about either of those things. And
- 30:10Speaker 1: if you want to hear exactly what I'm talking about.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Plus the mafia connection to Tommy James, which is the
- 30:16Speaker 1: Tommy James mob story, might be the greatest mob story
- 30:22Speaker 1: in music history. And that is saying something because it
- 30:25Speaker 1: has nothing to do with Frank Sinatra, it has nothing
- 30:28Speaker 1: to do with a bunch of the other sort of
- 30:30Speaker 1: cliche mob music industry stories that you've heard it's its
- 30:34Speaker 1: own thing. The fact that this is not a Martin
- 30:37Speaker 1: Scorsese movie is it's shocking to me. Actually, it's incredible,
- 30:43Speaker 1: and I love the episode that we put together on
- 30:46Speaker 1: Tommy James. It's one of my favorites. Check that out.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Melissa gay Hayden writes in Hey Jake, I've been wanting
- 30:52Speaker 1: to share this with you for some time, and I
- 30:53Speaker 1: have no excuse because no one is busier than you.
- 30:56Speaker 1: That's not true anyway. This profile belongs to Andy Speer,
- 30:59Speaker 1: and Melissa sends this Instagram profile on Andrew Spear. She says,
- 31:06Speaker 1: I didn't know him well, but we did graduate high
- 31:08Speaker 1: school together, and as you could see, Andy is an
- 31:10Speaker 1: extremely talented artist specializing in murals, but he's also a
- 31:13Speaker 1: music head and has done work for several hard rock locations.
- 31:17Speaker 1: And I got to say Andy's stuff is pretty great.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Check out Spear Life Andrew Spear via Melissa gay Hayden
- 31:24Speaker 1: on Instagram. You won't be disappointed. Benjamin Nelson writes in Hey,
- 31:28Speaker 1: big fan of the show, have you ever considered doing
- 31:31Speaker 1: an episode on Fishbone? That's been crazy shit going on, cults,
- 31:35Speaker 1: kidnappings and the like. Stay cool, that's Ben Nelson seventy
- 31:41Speaker 1: two on Instagram. I have considered a Fishbone episode. I've
- 31:43Speaker 1: seen Fishbone a couple times back in the day. I
- 31:46Speaker 1: love Truth and Soul that album. It's incredible and I
- 31:49Speaker 1: really regret not buying the vinyl version of it when
- 31:54Speaker 1: I was what record store was at. I was in
- 31:56Speaker 1: the West Village about three years ago, and it wasn't
- 31:59Speaker 1: even that expensive. It was maybe I don't know, it
- 32:02Speaker 1: wasn't cheap, but it wasn't that expensive. I just didn't
- 32:04Speaker 1: want to carry back on the plane and I regret it.
- 32:07Speaker 1: I should have done it. I should have done it. Yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 1: we're going to do an episode on Fishbone at some point.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Too crazy of a story, not too at disgracelam Pod
- 32:16Speaker 1: on the socials. You guys want to hit us up,

- 33:10Speaker 1: the way, Nicholas Polegi's book that inspired Goodfellas, or that
- 33:14Speaker 1: Goodfellas is based on, I should say, and it's pretty incredible.
- 33:18Speaker 1: It's pretty incredible. I was like, I've seen Goodfellas so
- 33:21Speaker 1: many damn times, there's no reason I should read this book.
- 33:24Speaker 1: But you know what, it doesn't matter how many times
- 33:26Speaker 1: you've seen Goodfellas. You should read this book. It gives
- 33:29Speaker 1: you context that you're just like every book compared to
- 33:32Speaker 1: the movie, You're gonna get this context that is completely
- 33:35Speaker 1: just so much deeper and richer, and it's going to
- 33:38Speaker 1: make you appreciate this movie even more than you probably
- 33:41Speaker 1: already did. I've actually already read a book about the
- 33:43Speaker 1: making of Goodfellas. I just never read the book that
- 33:46Speaker 1: Goodfellas was based on, and I gotta say I'm enjoying
- 33:50Speaker 1: the shit out of it. But for more movie talk
- 33:53Speaker 1: music in movie talk, I should say, got to check

- 34:49Speaker 1: that info in the show notes section of this after party,

- 35:36Speaker 2: Is it?
- 35:36Speaker 1: No, it's not. It's coming up. End of the month,
- 35:38Speaker 1: end of June six one seven nine oh six six
- 35:40Speaker 1: six three eight. Your voice keeps us sticking into the
- 35:42Speaker 1: dark corners of music history. So keep calling, keep texting
- 35:45Speaker 1: with your answers to this week's question of the week,
- 35:47Speaker 1: or to whatever else you want to talk about. Number Seve,
- 35:49Speaker 1: don't forget disc goes. This isn't just content. It's a community,
- 35:52Speaker 1: a community of the obsessed. And no one cares about music, books,
