Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/1: Third Day in Pads, Vets Get Rest, Opportunities for Depth Pieces
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Patriots are back in pads for a third straight day.
- 0:02Speaker 2: It was hot, it was humid.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Yes, the dog days are here.
- 0:05Speaker 2: What went down?
- 0:06Speaker 1: Let's talk about it. Welcome everybody to the Patriots training camcast,
- 0:18Speaker 1: presented by New Balance. We are here to break down
- 0:20Speaker 1: what dare we? Paul five day five, I wasn't here.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Yes, you missus one practice and he loses count.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I lost track. But we also here introduce Jack Webb.
- 0:30Speaker 2: It's going to be joining us this year. Everybody.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Paul and I a pre and postgame show, and Jack,
- 0:34Speaker 1: you're gonna be taking over the hosting duties.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Welcome. I am fired up. Two quick lessons I gotta
- 0:39Speaker 2: learn from day sunscreen. How about that? A little sunscreen?
- 0:41Speaker 2: And then I got to follow Polly's footsteps the towel genius.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Luckily Fred hooked me up with the napkins. So I'm
- 0:46Speaker 2: trying to wipe the sweat here as we go. But
- 0:47Speaker 2: it's a pleasure to be here. I'm really fired up
- 0:49Speaker 2: by the season.
- 0:49Speaker 3: If we have your back for another year. You're adding
- 0:52Speaker 3: the seat cushions too. Make sure you make sure you're
- 0:55Speaker 3: behind just taking care of it.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And I need that.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Okay, it's pretty flat so I know everybody probably thought
- 0:59Speaker 3: we had a player on for our post.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Jack play man right, play a little football you maan,
- 1:05Speaker 2: I guess shorter arms and Will Campbell.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Guys, it was, it was, it was.
- 1:07Speaker 2: It was a no for me from the very beginning.
- 1:09Speaker 1: We'll get the full scouting report on Jack before we
- 1:11Speaker 1: get into the first preseason game in a couple of weeks.
- 1:14Speaker 1: But guys, we did have a practice here today and
- 1:16Speaker 1: you know, you guys saw yesterday did a great job
- 1:18Speaker 1: breaking down Drake may rainom bombs in the red zone.
- 1:20Speaker 2: They were a little bit.
- 1:21Speaker 1: More in the middle of the field this this week
- 1:23Speaker 1: or today, I should say. Mike Rabel said they were
- 1:25Speaker 1: doing a call it which seemed like situational football, we know,
- 1:28Speaker 1: going through the downs. But overall, I thought there were
- 1:31Speaker 1: a few plays but it seems like things are a
- 1:33Speaker 1: little bit. There were sloppy to Paul, there was interceptions.
- 1:35Speaker 1: There were some balls on the.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Ground here, and I thought it was a little more
- 1:38Speaker 3: even today. I thought the defense made some disruptive plays
- 1:42Speaker 3: as well. I thought there was some immediate pressures. I
- 1:44Speaker 3: didn't know about the tempo of the actual plays how
- 1:47Speaker 3: they were running today. I thought they were a little
- 1:49Speaker 3: bit more live yesterday than they were today. But you know,
- 1:52Speaker 3: Drake May continues to throw the ball reasonably well, I think,
- 1:56Speaker 3: and then you're starting to see I think Romeo Dobbs
- 1:58Speaker 3: show up a little bit more. You had a little
- 2:01Speaker 3: bit less from some of the other guys today, so
- 2:03Speaker 3: I thought, you know, you had to. You mentioned the interceptions,
- 2:06Speaker 3: so you had one for May, one for Tommy DeVito.
- 2:10Speaker 3: But overall I thought it was a little bit back
- 2:12Speaker 3: and forth today for the offense and defense.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I felt a little bit like the dog days
- 2:16Speaker 4: of training. Camper here and three straight days and it's
- 2:20Speaker 4: hot and the day off tomorrow, so maybe a little
- 2:22Speaker 4: bit more, uh, sloppiness today, especially from the offense. The
- 2:26Speaker 4: balls on the ground a couple of times with a
- 2:27Speaker 4: few fumbles, and the interceptions that you guys mentioned. Uh, Jackie,
- 2:32Speaker 4: you've played offensive line, so you got to school these
- 2:35Speaker 4: guys on this. But we had a lot of pressure.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Played offensive line in high school too, Thank you very much.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Just so no, he doesn't have to school him.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm passing the baton. He love it on
- 2:46Speaker 4: the offensive line talk. But up front there, I thought
- 2:48Speaker 4: there were some issues with some of the stunts in
- 2:50Speaker 4: the games that the defense was running. Elijah Ponder, Draymond Jones,
- 2:55Speaker 4: a couple of guys in there. So I thought that
- 2:59Speaker 4: was something that in pacted practice a little bit too.
- 3:01Speaker 4: And as this new offensive line and you know, some
- 3:04Speaker 4: guys were out today no Vera, Tucker Morgan, Moses continues
- 3:07Speaker 4: to kind of rotate with kayleb Blomo. So a couple
- 3:10Speaker 4: of things that have stood out there in terms of
- 3:12Speaker 4: the pass rush. Maybe not the standard fore man rushes,
- 3:15Speaker 4: those seem to be blocked up pretty well. But once
- 3:17Speaker 4: you start running all those games up front, that's when
- 3:19Speaker 4: it got a little dicey.
- 3:20Speaker 2: You guys can speak this way better than I can.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Having watched so many of these training camp practices, the
- 3:25Speaker 2: run game seems like it needs to get going. Is
- 3:26Speaker 2: that a training camp thing? Is that maybe some questions
- 3:29Speaker 2: about about how efficient it is here has been early on.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been quiet. It is hard to evaluate it
- 3:34Speaker 3: when they're not tackling to the ground. But I thought
- 3:36Speaker 3: the way you haven't put it, there were guys I
- 3:38Speaker 3: thought knifing through and being making just shocked. That's why
- 3:41Speaker 3: I thought there was more disruptive plays on defense. I
- 3:44Speaker 3: did just was really just talking about interceptions. I thought,
- 3:48Speaker 3: fifty one is that Riley Wilson. Yet Riley Wilson, I
- 3:53Speaker 3: thought it was blowing up places.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Yet he put somebody on his but one of the
- 3:56Speaker 4: rookie running backs, I don't know what thirty nine or
- 3:58Speaker 4: thirty they kind of all.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I thought there were a lot of players around the
- 4:01Speaker 3: line of scrimmage that never really had a chance to
- 4:03Speaker 3: get going. Screen passed Alarison was one of the fumbles
- 4:06Speaker 3: that Evan talked about. So yeah, I thought the running
- 4:09Speaker 3: game is not anywhere near where you wanted to be.
- 4:12Speaker 3: But Vara Tucker missing from left guard is a big difference.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And I did think that Ben Brown, who took his spot,
- 4:17Speaker 3: struggled for the most of part today. Moses, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 3: he was out there for the team periods, he wasn't
- 4:23Speaker 3: out there for the individual stuff, so you know, there
- 4:25Speaker 3: was a lot of mixing and matching today. I think
- 4:27Speaker 3: Mike hid it right in the open though. It's just
- 4:29Speaker 3: dog days of August, and you know it's only August first.
- 4:32Speaker 1: And that's what I think the coaches want to get
- 4:33Speaker 1: to this point when you got to push through that
- 4:35Speaker 1: mental toughness and find it when it's hot and when
- 4:38Speaker 1: it's hard, especially when some new players getting opportunities, everybody
- 4:41Speaker 1: wants to know. Of course, how Drake did. I mean,
- 4:43Speaker 1: he'd have one really nice, you know, backshore shoulder throat
- 4:45Speaker 1: to AJ Brown. Don't panic.
- 4:47Speaker 3: A J.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Brown did walk off the field. He didn't, he didn't
- 4:49Speaker 1: come back. But Mike Rabel did say they were going
- 4:51Speaker 1: to limit some of these guys today, as Paul pointed out,
- 4:53Speaker 1: So I don't think there's any reason to panic. However,
- 4:55Speaker 1: Kyle Williams did also go off with a trainer and
- 4:58Speaker 1: was getting looked at, so that's something O back.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Well, he came back into and he was doing what
- 5:02Speaker 3: I thought was interesting, a lot of work with on
- 5:05Speaker 3: special teams, with the gunners and the vice guys. So
- 5:07Speaker 3: he's clearly trying to find himself a game day role.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so returner maybe we talked about that.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I mean, anything to use as speed, you know, whether
- 5:15Speaker 4: it's gunner covering punts or returning kickoffs. I think both
- 5:20Speaker 4: of those things are our roles for him. You know,
- 5:22Speaker 4: I've talked a lot about the third running back also
- 5:24Speaker 4: being involved in those kickoff returns, so getting speedback there
- 5:28Speaker 4: is obviously the type of play that it is, so
- 5:30Speaker 4: I could see Kyle Williams potentially filling in there and
- 5:33Speaker 4: maybe earning a roster spot because after Chisholm, he's going
- 5:37Speaker 4: to play on special teams. You know, he's going to
- 5:39Speaker 4: be a backup returner and he's going to be able
- 5:41Speaker 4: to maybe cover kicks too. So I think Kyle Williams
- 5:44Speaker 4: got to learn special teams. That's going to have to
- 5:46Speaker 4: be a path.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Jack, your first time at KIM What what stood
- 5:48Speaker 1: out to you today?
- 5:49Speaker 2: First off, A lot of credits to you guys watching
- 5:51Speaker 2: all that chaos, especially when everyone's an indie, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 2: watching everyone, it's almost impossible to follow, especially the guy
- 5:56Speaker 2: with the ADHD. I tip the caps you guys. I
- 6:01Speaker 2: thought it was very interesting to watch that live period
- 6:04Speaker 2: at the end with the threes. I think that that's
- 6:06Speaker 2: kind of this time of year. I love those battles, right,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'm biased. I played with Xavier Holmes right so watching
- 6:11Speaker 2: him and king on him, just watching a guy fight
- 6:13Speaker 2: for a spot. I think that's what's always so intriguing
- 6:16Speaker 2: about these training camp practice and there's plenty of battles
- 6:18Speaker 2: across the board here at PATS Camp.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Yeah, Live tackling to the ground, which we don't see
- 6:22Speaker 4: you very often in practice. And they've done it both days,
- 6:25Speaker 4: just with the threes. Don't worry, they're not tackling Drake
- 6:27Speaker 4: may all right, but just with the threes. But we
- 6:30Speaker 4: saw it yesterday, we saw it today. I don't know
- 6:33Speaker 4: if you guys recalled. Did we see that last summer.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I don't remember Mike Rabel having live tackling.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I definitely don't remember this amount of reps for the threes. Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 3: period last year. I think that's a testament. Mike was
- 6:44Speaker 3: asked about it before practice. I think it's a testament
- 6:46Speaker 3: to you know, Morten and some of those receivers, you know,
- 6:50Speaker 3: I think Cameron Dormer, Riley Dixon. I think these guys
- 6:53Speaker 3: have shown up and made some plays when they've been
- 6:56Speaker 3: given opportunities, and I think because of that, Mike feels
- 6:58Speaker 3: compelled to give them more opportunities.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I would like to toss you guys, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 2: warm up the softball here. Kyle Williams obviously named fans
- 7:05Speaker 2: are very curious about a great day. Offensively, is that
- 7:08Speaker 2: upside that it is going to make it a tough
- 7:10Speaker 2: call for them, A really tough decision here at the
- 7:11Speaker 2: end of the month. I mean, I think he's starting
- 7:13Speaker 2: to show up here in the last couple of days.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I mean, you guys saw yesterday is.
- 7:16Speaker 1: What he ever? I don't know what he did yesterday, yeaheah.
- 7:18Speaker 4: No, he had a good day. Yeah.
- 7:19Speaker 1: So it's just been making most of his of his opportunities,
- 7:22Speaker 1: I think, And that's what we've talked about. That's why
- 7:23Speaker 1: I like him as a kickoff returner.
- 7:24Speaker 2: It's a spot where they.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Don't really have an obvious guy and maybe if he
- 7:27Speaker 1: can add some speed to that, maybe some game changing ability,
- 7:30Speaker 1: because early in the camp's almost felt like an afterthought
- 7:32Speaker 1: with the kickoff returner.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Yeah, Kyle Williams. Yesterday I thought was kind of like
- 7:36Speaker 4: his breakout practice, if you want to call it that,
- 7:38Speaker 4: and you finally started to notice him a little bit.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Then today I thought he was behind the defense on
- 7:43Speaker 4: that deep ball and Drake May under threw that pass
- 7:45Speaker 4: a little bit. It was so he went right through
- 7:47Speaker 4: the middle of the field and he was he was
- 7:48Speaker 4: going to be gone, and the ball just hung up
- 7:50Speaker 4: in the air on Drake May a little bit. So
- 7:53Speaker 4: I thought the last couple of days, we've seen a
- 7:55Speaker 4: little bit more Kyle Williams. Paul you mentioned to me,
- 7:58Speaker 4: I think before practice, maybe a little less kish on booty. Uh.
- 8:02Speaker 4: He did have a catch today, but maybe a little
- 8:04Speaker 4: bit that hype train slowing just a tad and maybe
- 8:07Speaker 4: Kyle Williams picking up the torch a little.
- 8:09Speaker 3: And one last thing Mike before I know, you have
- 8:11Speaker 3: to do your wrap up. We got at least a
- 8:14Speaker 3: chance to see yeah Gay bach Us. Yeah, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 3: so he was not in full pads and very limited.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Mike said he would be limited, and he was, but
- 8:22Speaker 3: I did get to see him sort of working on
- 8:24Speaker 3: some punk protection stuff. He rocked one of the coaches,
- 8:27Speaker 3: Mike Smith.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike Smith.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Uh, you know, I don't know any of the coaches.
- 8:34Speaker 4: So I made an audible noise when that happened when
- 8:36Speaker 4: we were watching up a practice. I was like, I
- 8:38Speaker 4: think I heard it, so he uh, yeah, he There's
- 8:41Speaker 4: some video. It was during periods that you could shoot,
- 8:44Speaker 4: you know, media could shoot. So there's some video on
- 8:45Speaker 4: Twitter circling around of him just putting Mike Smith. He's
- 8:48Speaker 4: not a small guy, you know, I mean late in
- 8:50Speaker 4: the league, like this is a former player. Uh, and
- 8:53Speaker 4: he was holding the pad and act as bull rush
- 8:56Speaker 4: him and just ran him right over, put him right
- 8:59Speaker 4: on his butt. And I think that was more finally
- 9:02Speaker 4: I get to practice, yeah, you know, than anything else
- 9:05Speaker 4: to like look into. But I thought that he looked healthy.
- 9:08Speaker 4: I thought he looked explosive, powerful, what you expect, and
- 9:11Speaker 4: you could just tell that he was chopping at the
- 9:13Speaker 4: bit even to do one on ones, like literally anything
- 9:15Speaker 4: that the coaches would let him do.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah, Mike Rabel said he was texting him every night
- 9:18Speaker 1: even though he knew he wasn't gonna practice the next day,
- 9:20Speaker 1: begging we're able to put him in there. So that's
- 9:22Speaker 1: going to do it here for Saturday, they're going to
- 9:24Speaker 1: be off tomorrow. We back at it Monday. I think
- 9:25Speaker 1: they're going to be backing pads again. So we're in
- 9:28Speaker 1: the dog days right now. A lot to find out
- 9:30Speaker 1: with some of these position battles lower down on the
- 9:32Speaker 1: depth chart. So we're back on Monday to break it
- 9:34Speaker 1: all down.
