• 0:00
SPEAKER_01: And we're back with another episode of Unlocking Huntington Beach.
• 0:04
  SPEAKER_01: What's going on?
• 0:04
SPEAKER_01: My name is Lane Stone, and we have another good one for you today.
• 0:09
SPEAKER_01: Today we are sitting down with Matt Banworth, and he is the owner of Red Wolf CrossFit in Huntington Beach, and it's been around for a long time.
• 0:17
SPEAKER_01: So all you fitness gurus out there probably recognize him and being around the community for a long time.
• 0:22
SPEAKER_01: But we're gonna get into it because you've been owner of um the CrossFit Gym for since 2012, which is the same time that I got in real estate.
• 0:30
SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of interesting to see how we uh have we're behind the scenes.
• 0:34
SPEAKER_01: We were chatting and we were really very similar with like being left-handed and baseball backgrounds and stuff like that.
• 0:38
SPEAKER_01: So this I'm really excited to dive into it with you.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_01: Uh, but let's start with you know, you're approaching two decades in the CrossFit world, uh, 14 years over at Red Wolf.
• 0:47
SPEAKER_01: Uh, what got you into CrossFit?
• 0:50
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, great question.
• 0:52
SPEAKER_00: Um, what got me into CrossFit was I was playing college baseball at Biola, like how we were talking about earlier, uh, off the air.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_00: And I was small, I was weak, and I was just doing traditional strength training and it was working.
• 1:04
SPEAKER_00: Like I was putting on size, I was putting on muscle, but I was like, I was didn't have as much athleticism as I wanted.
• 1:09
SPEAKER_00: So I was like, I gotta find something that's that transfers more to a sport.
• 1:13
SPEAKER_00: And so I got into CrossFit, which got me more into like functional lifts like deadlifts, squats, and like the Olympic lifts like the snatch and clean and jerk, and uh more agility-based stuff like box jumps and sprints.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_00: And so that made me able to transfer a lot of that muscle mass I put on into transferring to power and agility on the field.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_00: And um, even my coaches recognized it.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_01: And it made a difference for you.
• 1:34
  SPEAKER_00: Made a huge difference.
• 1:35
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_01: So is there um for maybe athletes that are want to put on size or put like build some athleticism, is there like an age where you think would be a good time to explore CrossFit?
• 1:46
SPEAKER_00: It depends on the maturity level of that you are as you know, a young athlete.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_00: And I think a lot of it more has to do with getting so um a kid or a younger athlete comfortable in the gym first.
• 1:56
SPEAKER_00: So it almost doesn't really matter if it's CrossFit or not, in my opinion.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_00: As long as you can get your kid, um, if you're a parent, if you're a kid, that you get them comfortable in a gym environment first, regardless of what discipline it is, and then you can always tack on stuff later.
• 2:10
  SPEAKER_01: Okay, cool.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I feel like when I was, I don't know what your history was in sports, but like for me, I didn't really start to get into the gym uh aggressively, I guess, until high school, until we joined the high school team.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_01: And then it's we I was opened up to the gym.
• 2:22
SPEAKER_01: And being a five foot nothing, 105-pound freshman, I I I couldn't even barely like bench the bar at that time.
• 2:30
SPEAKER_01: So I that was my first and like um open world experience into the gym.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_01: So I'm thinking like, should I have started sooner?
• 2:37
SPEAKER_01: And is it like does is it could you start sooner than high school if you wanted to get comfortable with the gym, or is it kind of a um or is it appropriate to wait for maybe until your freshman year?
• 2:48
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
• 2:49
  SPEAKER_00: You can definitely start.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_00: I I I guess if I had to put a number on it, start training in like 13 that 14-year-old range would be good to at least start like getting comfortable with some weights.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: You don't have to go super heavy, you don't have to do anything super aggressive.
• 3:01
SPEAKER_00: It's like, let's just teach you the mechanics first, you know, and let's just make sure you're moving well and moving with good biomechanics and good form.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, from that when you start developing, when you kind of hit that 16-year-old age, when you start kind of developing physically, then we can kind of start pushing your boundaries a bit.
• 3:16
  SPEAKER_01: All right.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_01: And let's speak to somebody like me.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_01: Like, for I I've been very comfortable in the gym.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_01: I've always been some sort of a gym rat.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I appreciate fitness, but I've never actually experienced CrossFit before.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_01: So when you're speaking to somebody like me who has never experienced it before, like what would you say that I could expect?
• 3:32
SPEAKER_01: What would be different than me working out on my own at the gym?
• 3:34
SPEAKER_01: What are some things that um I might experience as a newbie going into CrossFit?
• 3:39
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh one thing you can really expect is to be more efficient with your time.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_00: And that's a big reason why a lot of my clients like CrossFit in the first place, was that you take all these different elements and you don't have to worry about if you're, you know, you don't have to worry about if you're getting enough strength, you don't have to worry about if you're not getting enough cardiovascular in, you don't have to worry about if you're not getting enough body weight exercise in and or variety, and also it keeps you from getting bored.
• 4:01
SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, have you ever gone to the gym and been kind of like it's kind of a drag because it's like the same thing all the time?
• 4:06
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or like I saw I find myself in between sets slipping on my phone.
• 4:10
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, and I had the same problem.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_00: So that's kind of what got me into CrossFit too.
• 4:14
SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, there's got to be something more efficient and also something that, you know, keeps things fresh.
• 4:18
SPEAKER_00: Cause I got kind of bored of the normal gym.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_00: I still do some of the traditional gym stuff.
• 4:23
SPEAKER_00: Uh, however, I think that if you can add in a little bit more variety, it keeps things fresh and it keeps you motivated.
• 4:28
SPEAKER_00: And also the accountability component is big in CrossFit because you're either training one-on-one or in a small group.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_00: And so with that, it's like you kind of have like a little tribe and a community that will help you stay accountable, encourage you, pick you up when you're down, and then celebrate your wins as well when you do accomplish something.
• 4:45
SPEAKER_00: And I think that's huge for a long-term success in fitness because doing it on your own works for sure.
• 4:51
SPEAKER_00: And, you know, a lot of people can do that.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: But over a long enough timeline, fitness can kind of become a drag, you know, even for me, and I'm deeply embedded into it.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_00: So even I lose motivation.
• 5:00
SPEAKER_00: So it's like, man, I just got to go to class today, and then, you know, I'll get my workout in and I can go back to my work.
• 5:06
SPEAKER_00: And so when I do do that, it's like I have that there for me because it's like I'll always get my workout in.
• 5:11
SPEAKER_00: How long is a typical workout?
• 5:13
SPEAKER_00: Uh, typical workout, a typical class will run about an hour, but the actual workout itself will run anywhere between 20 minutes to 40 minutes.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_01: And you can put you can probably do twice as much in that range of time than you probably would if it was just me just working at the gym in like an hour.
• 5:27
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
• 5:28
  SPEAKER_00: It's very efficient.
• 5:28
SPEAKER_00: And that's why, you know, a lot of our the people we work with really enjoy it because they're really busy, you know, they're they have regular jobs, they have demanding jobs, they have families, and so they need to get in, get out, and get on with their day and not even worrying about if they did enough.
• 5:43
SPEAKER_01: And for those that look at, you know, uh CrossFit posts on Instagram or whatever, there's other gyms that post a lot of things.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_01: And it looks like everyone's in incredible shape.
• 5:51
SPEAKER_01: And you might be somebody that's sitting there and thinking, like, I'm open to doing that, but like I'm not worried near these these levels.
• 5:57
SPEAKER_01: Like, can anybody of any level, any strength level, any athleticism level come to a CrossFit gym and still enjoy it or still like uh be okay in that environment?
• 6:06
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, 100%.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_00: Thank you for bringing that up because that's one of the most common things that I get is that you know, am I in good enough shape to do it or is it too intense?
• 6:15
SPEAKER_00: And and Instagram, you know, the algorithm is going to always gonna show you things of the extreme side.
• 6:21
SPEAKER_00: And we always forget that there's this whole other spectrum of like 95% of CrossFitters who are just your everyday people who are there just to get fit, go for longevity, you know, you know, maintain healthy body composition.
• 6:33
SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's the majority of CrossFitters.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_00: But unfortunately, Instagram doesn't want to show that because it's boring.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_00: You know, they want to show the fancy stuff, they want to show the cool stuff, like the stuff on the rings or the muscle ups or the jack dudes or the jack girls when that's like the top one percent of CrossFitters.
• 6:48
  SPEAKER_01: Sure.
• 6:48
SPEAKER_01: And then um what I know there's a lot of different CrossFit gyms all over Orange County, all over like County to Beach.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_01: Um, what it makes Red Wolf a little bit different than some of the other ones?
• 6:58
SPEAKER_01: Uh, what can you expect to go if you've been at a different CrossFit gym before and maybe it didn't work out and you want to explore a different one?
• 7:03
SPEAKER_01: What makes Red Wolf a little bit different and stand out amongst the others?
• 7:08
SPEAKER_00: The thing that makes us different is that we're really heavily based in data and evidence tracking specifically.
• 7:16
SPEAKER_00: So we always want to find out specifically in a one-on-one setting, like, okay, well, what is this person in terms of like their limitations, their circumstances?
• 7:24
SPEAKER_00: And then we also look at their body composition and also like any kind of other data that we can collect on them, whether it be blood work or anything else.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_00: But specific specifically, first thing we do is look at their body composition.
• 7:35
SPEAKER_00: So we take a look at what their visceral fat is, we take a look at their body fat percentage, their muscle mass.
• 7:39
  SPEAKER_00: Are there any imbalances?
• 7:41
SPEAKER_00: What's their body water balance look like?
• 7:43
SPEAKER_00: You know, and also we ask them questions like what other fitness programs have you done?
• 7:47
SPEAKER_00: Where do you want to go?
• 7:48
SPEAKER_00: How can we tailor this specifically for you?
• 7:50
SPEAKER_00: Because at the end of the day, you know, and you know, this being a ball player, it's like the better ball players always and who go further always have some sort of one-on-one coaching to get better.
• 8:00
  SPEAKER_00: So, same thing here.
• 8:01
SPEAKER_00: It's like we really emphasize a lot of one-on-one coaching and not necessarily personal training, but we always will find a way to work with someone one-on-one, be like, how can we tweak our program to get you to where you want to go rather than just projecting what we like onto you?
• 8:14
SPEAKER_01: And I totally appreciate coaching.
• 8:15
SPEAKER_01: Like I even in my own business, I have a business coach.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_01: And so, like if you think about some of the greats in the world, you know, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, uh, some of the baseball players, Mike Child, like they all have coaches.
• 8:26
SPEAKER_01: They all have staff that's looking after all of their movements.
• 8:29
SPEAKER_01: They're all looking at their swings, their shots, they're all making these minor little adjustments to make a big improvement.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_01: So to have that little extra push and a little extra edge and to have somebody looking at everything that you're doing to improve yourself, I think is is huge.
• 8:41
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_00: And I think we often forget that we're in an era of where there's so much information.
• 8:46
SPEAKER_00: It's like, and there's a lot of good information, which is a good thing, but also not all the good information applies to you as an individual.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_00: So our job as coaches is to filter all that and be like, hey, this is we know that this is good, but this is gonna be better for you specifically where you're at.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_01: Well, well, let's uh let's shift gears a little bit and let's talk about Wadapalooza.
• 9:05
SPEAKER_01: Um, I am not familiar with Wadapalooza, so I want you to speak to um somebody who like myself, maybe who isn't familiar.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_01: And and uh from what I understand, it's a big event for Huntington Beach and it draws a lot of people, just something similar to what like a surf open or like a or like a Pacific Air Show type would, it's just gonna draw a lot of fitness people here, so which is I think is a good thing for the city.
• 9:25
SPEAKER_01: Uh, what is this event about?
• 9:27
SPEAKER_01: Uh can somebody who's not a part of CrossFit go and watch and enjoy it too?
• 9:31
SPEAKER_01: Or if you're a part of CrossFit and you want to get involved, like just give us the whole uh play-by-play of Wadapalooza.
• 9:35
  SPEAKER_00: Just some backstory.
• 9:36
SPEAKER_00: Watapalooza started 14 years ago in 2012.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_00: So the same year I started my gym, and their uh their flagship event is in Miami, uh huge event.
• 9:44
SPEAKER_00: They Miami, I know, draws about 40,000 spectators.
• 9:47
SPEAKER_00: There's like 100 plus partners and vendors and exhibitors there, and over right around like 18, about 2,000 athletes participate in Miami.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_00: And then they brought over Watapalooza to SoCal, and Huntington Beach was their main choice, which is a great choice, by the way.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_00: And it started with only about 800 athletes the first year, which was 2024, just a handful.
• 10:09
  SPEAKER_00: It was pretty small.
• 10:10
SPEAKER_00: And then they've scaled it now to where in 2026, three years later, we have there's about uh 1,500 athletes, so just under the number of their Miami numbers, and then it tracks about 30,000 spectators and about 50 plus brands.
• 10:22
SPEAKER_00: And so it's like uh a good way to put it in a nutshell is like the Coachella of Fitness.
• 10:26
  SPEAKER_01: That's incredible.
• 10:27
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's incredible.
• 10:28
SPEAKER_01: So the 30,000 spectators when they're watching, they're watching these events, right?
• 10:32
SPEAKER_01: And there's what what kind of events are happening on the beach that would be entertaining for a spectator to watch?
• 10:37
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
• 10:37
SPEAKER_00: Well, what's great about is that you know, there's gonna be events going all day, both from the community standpoint and the the elites.
• 10:43
SPEAKER_00: And so you get to watch some of the best athletes in the world compete, and some of you know just your everyday CrossFitters who've only been doing it a year compete as well.
• 10:50
SPEAKER_00: And so um there'll be entertainment all day.
• 10:52
SPEAKER_00: And then some of my favorite events are the ones that they do on the beach itself.
• 10:56
SPEAKER_00: So one of my favorite events that they do is um it's so it's a it's a move where they move all this equipment like down the beach and back for time as like a competition between like two teams.
• 11:05
SPEAKER_00: Uh man, I forgot the name of it, I can't remember.
• 11:07
SPEAKER_00: But it's um, oh, it's called sand delivery.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_00: So they have all these like odd objects, like dumb, like really heavy dumbbells, like all these heavy sandbags, and then they have two teams who are competing who will find the most efficient way to move it all the uh the equipment down the beach and then all the way back.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_00: And it sounds kind of dumb when I'm explaining it, but when you watch it, you're like, man, that's insane because all the stuff's really heavy.
• 11:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that uh some of the events that I've seen, like all just going through my feet, because that's all I've that's my experience with crossbows, is kind of going through feet.
• 11:34
  SPEAKER_01: Incredible.
• 11:35
SPEAKER_01: And some of these athletes are uh insane and they're in phenomenal shape, and it's really actually very entertaining to watch.
• 11:41
SPEAKER_01: Uh, but it is it possible for somebody that's watching this to still get involved and compete if they want to be a competitor in it, or is it too late for that?
• 11:48
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
• 11:48
SPEAKER_00: So uh the probably the best way to do it, especially if you're a little bit newer, they have um a competition specifically for spectators.
• 11:55
  SPEAKER_00: It's called the Gauntlet.
• 11:57
SPEAKER_00: So it's like a hybrid style mini competition where it's about an hour long and there's breaks, but there's usually three events uh within that hour that you will do.
• 12:05
SPEAKER_00: And then there's three separate styles of workouts that you do typically.
• 12:09
SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm not sure what the format is this year yet, but typically you'll do some sort of a cardiovascular bias workout and then kind of a, and then after that, you'll take a break and then you'll do like a strength bias workout.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_00: And then the final event is typically kind of more like a classic CrossFit, like mixed modal, like a little bit of everything at the end.
• 12:25
  SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit shorter.
• 12:26
SPEAKER_00: So it's a great way to kind of get your feet wet and try it out, or you can just watch.
• 12:29
  SPEAKER_00: That's not true.
• 12:30
SPEAKER_01: And anything that we're talking about, whether it's Watapalooza, whether it's Red Wolf CrossFit, like we're gonna have all the links in the show notes.
• 12:36
SPEAKER_01: So if you are watching this on YouTube, you'll see in the show notes.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_01: If you're listening to it on your favorite podcast and you're driving, don't look for it while you're driving.
• 12:44
SPEAKER_01: Pull over, or when you stop, it'll be in the show notes, and you'll have all the links and all the information that you would need for these particular things.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_01: If you were involved with CrossFit, or if you didn't own Red Wolf, what do you think you'd be doing?
• 12:55
  SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
• 12:56
SPEAKER_00: I've always wanted to do something in media.
• 12:59
SPEAKER_00: So I thought when I um when I was at Bilo playing baseball, I applied for the film program twice and got rejected twice.
• 13:06
SPEAKER_00: And funny story, I ended up doing a bunch of media work for the CrossFit gym I was working at at the time.
• 13:10
SPEAKER_00: And one of the professors saw it who's in the film program and goes, Hey, have you ever thought about doing film?
• 13:16
SPEAKER_00: I was like, Yeah, I applied twice.
• 13:17
  SPEAKER_00: I got rejected twice.
• 13:18
SPEAKER_00: He's like, I can get you in, but I was like, ah, it's okay.
• 13:20
SPEAKER_00: Like it was like my senior year or something.
• 13:21
SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm just gonna graduate.
• 13:22
  SPEAKER_01: That's funny.
• 13:22
SPEAKER_01: I was about to ask if because if you're playing baseball, and let's say you went 0 for two, would you give up after 0 for two?
• 13:28
SPEAKER_01: You could step up, and if you went one for three, you have a good batting average.
• 13:31
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that is true.
• 13:32
SPEAKER_00: Uh, but it was my senior year, and I was also getting really heavily involved in CrossFit at the time.
• 13:36
SPEAKER_00: And so I like my CrossFit path was doing really well.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_00: So I'm like, I'm gonna stick this out and use the media as like another means to help promote like whatever gym I'm at.
• 13:45
SPEAKER_01: So one of the things that I've heard about CrossFit too is it's it's very um social and like very close-knit family environment, and people look after each other and they network with each other even there too, and they develop like really strong, like lifelong friends.
• 13:57
SPEAKER_01: Is that something that you see in your gym as well?
• 13:59
SPEAKER_01: And and is there are there any like personal examples of like maybe uh we don't have to say anybody's names per se if we don't have to, but is there any personal examples of like how some other uh member at Red Wolf made a friend's life better or pushed somebody or got them through something a hard time or just the social side of Red Wolf?
• 14:19
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
• 14:20
SPEAKER_00: And that's what we love most about the CrossFit community in general, is that it is a very tight-knit community.
• 14:25
SPEAKER_00: We do look out for each other.
• 14:26
SPEAKER_00: And yeah, it's always nice because, like I said, fitness is hard.
• 14:30
SPEAKER_00: Like over a long enough timeline, a time horizon, you're going to get bored of whatever you're gonna do, including CrossFit.
• 14:35
SPEAKER_00: Like there are times where I'm just like, you know what, I really don't want to work out today.
• 14:38
SPEAKER_00: And so, but then you know you always have your friend, your buddy who's like, Come on, like you can do it, you can do it.
• 14:42
SPEAKER_00: And they a you on then you do the workout, and you're like, Oh, I'm so glad I worked out.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_00: I feel so much better.
• 14:47
SPEAKER_00: Thank you for telling me I could do it.
• 14:49
SPEAKER_00: Like they're always there to pick you up.
• 14:50
SPEAKER_01: So it's almost like having an accountability partner.
• 14:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's the best part.
• 14:53
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_01: Are you almost assigned like an accountability partner when you join?
• 14:56
SPEAKER_01: Of like, hey, this is like your partner, you better check in with them to make sure you show up, or you just kind of develop it naturally as well It just comes, it kind of just comes naturally.
• 15:04
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 15:04
  SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
• 15:05
SPEAKER_00: And a great example of this is like uh, you know, Max, who was on your podcast earlier from uh Max Dafront's uh president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, uh, he met his wife at Red Wolf.
• 15:16
SPEAKER_00: And so they just had their third baby.
• 15:17
  SPEAKER_00: Congratulations.
• 15:18
SPEAKER_00: And uh and yeah, so it's great to see like lives change because of that.
• 15:22
SPEAKER_00: So he and he proposed to his wife at Red Wolf.
• 15:26
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 15:26
SPEAKER_00: And then I almost messed it up.
• 15:28
SPEAKER_00: I was like in the picture, and they're like, Matt, move.
• 15:29
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh yeah, I forgot Max is proposing.
• 15:31
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so that was embarrassing.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_01: For those that are feeling like they've been shut out on the dating world and the relationship world, maybe, and you feel like you want to find your significant other, maybe it's time to check out Red Wolf.
• 15:40
SPEAKER_01: That might be a good thing.
• 15:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I mean, any kind of tight-ness tight-knit community can do it.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_00: I mean, running clubs do it.
• 15:47
SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, you I mean, it's a great way to like just make really good friends who have the same values of you.
• 15:52
SPEAKER_00: And also, I mean, it puts you in an environment where you know you raise your standards and then it affects your life positively in all aspects of life.
• 15:59
  SPEAKER_01: Totally.
• 16:00
SPEAKER_01: Like, I have a really close friend of mine that met his partner through a run club too.
• 16:03
SPEAKER_01: So it's it's ditch the apps, just get out there and get active.
• 16:06
SPEAKER_01: But um, if if you were speaking to like one perfect candidate that you think would be prime to come check out Red Wolf, and you're visualizing this particular candidate that should be checking out Red Wolf, what are who are they?
• 16:19
SPEAKER_01: What do they look like?
• 16:19
  SPEAKER_01: What are they doing?
• 16:20
SPEAKER_01: And and why should they come check you out?
• 16:22
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 16:22
SPEAKER_00: Anyone who always makes the excuse that I don't have enough time.
• 16:26
SPEAKER_00: And that's the number one self-reported, you know, thing that I hear from people is that oh, I just don't have time to work out.
• 16:32
SPEAKER_00: I'm like, well, you know, we can help you with that.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, I love you know traditional workouts.
• 16:38
SPEAKER_00: I like I love all styles of fitness, and you know, whatever style works best for you, please do that.
• 16:43
SPEAKER_00: But I do hear a lot that people don't have enough time to work out or get on a program.
• 16:47
SPEAKER_00: And so what's great about what we all have to offer is just the fact that you you are going to hit every aspect of fitness in a very short amount of time and get results a lot faster, you know, up to up to 50% faster than if you were just trying to do it on your own simply because of the accountability, the structure, and the systems that we have in place.
• 17:05
SPEAKER_00: Because we've done this like 10,000 times.
• 17:07
SPEAKER_00: So it's like we take someone who doesn't have a lot of time, that they want to get in shape, but they don't have a lot of time to do it.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, well, we know how to do this.
• 17:14
SPEAKER_00: It's like we go boom, like step one, step two, step three.
• 17:18
  SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
• 17:18
SPEAKER_00: Only takes an hour four times a week.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_01: What are the hours of Red Wolf?
• 17:23
SPEAKER_01: Like when you guys open and when you guys close.
• 17:25
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we open at 5 a.m.
• 17:26
  SPEAKER_00: and then we close at 6 30 p.m.
• 17:29
SPEAKER_00: So our last class is 5 30.
• 17:30
SPEAKER_01: Is there like usually a peak time where it gets a little bit busier than the other times?
• 17:34
SPEAKER_01: And um, like like maybe the five o'clock hours busier than because people want to work out first thing in the morning, or is it pretty like consistently steady throughout the day?
• 17:43
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, overall it's pretty consistent.
• 17:45
SPEAKER_00: I would say our most popular class time, surprisingly, is 5 a.m.
• 17:48
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 17:49
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're very dedicated.
• 17:50
SPEAKER_00: They they they they are they're a whole nother breed because I can't do that.
• 17:54
SPEAKER_01: Okay, so you're not the one opening the store at 5 a.m.
• 17:56
  SPEAKER_00: then no, I'm not.
• 17:57
SPEAKER_00: Luckily, I'm my team helps me out with that.
• 17:59
SPEAKER_00: I'll still sub in here here and there for them, but uh but yeah, the 5 a.m.
• 18:03
SPEAKER_00: crew is a very dedicated crew.
• 18:04
SPEAKER_00: It's like the same people every day, five days a week.
• 18:06
SPEAKER_01: And for those that might be watching that, like, oh, you know, getting I don't you're I don't have the time and I'm open to exploring this.
• 18:12
  SPEAKER_01: I like faster results.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_01: Like I know everybody in everybody is different.
• 18:17
SPEAKER_01: Um how is there like an average of like, you know, you should really start to see results in your fitness level in two to four weeks?
• 18:24
SPEAKER_01: Or is there like a normal time frame that you see when people start to really truly see results?
• 18:29
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 18:29
SPEAKER_00: I was we from our data tracking, we typically start seeing visible results within about 42 days.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_00: So about which averages out about to be about 24 training sessions.
• 18:40
SPEAKER_00: So it's when people start seeing results.
• 18:41
SPEAKER_00: And on average, we see about a 2% body fat reduction, about one to two pounds of muscle gain from our data that we collect from our clients.
• 18:49
SPEAKER_00: And then some people are higher, some people are lower, depending on you know, age, you know, if they've worked out before, goals, stuff like that.
• 18:56
SPEAKER_00: But that's what we see on average.
• 18:57
SPEAKER_01: And I know that you guys are you guys have individual options, it looks like too, or it's like more one-on-one coaching and training, and then you have group options, it seems like as well.
• 19:06
SPEAKER_01: Um I guess kind of explain all the different options that people have when they come to Red Wolf.
• 19:12
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 19:12
SPEAKER_00: So we're known for our group training because that's how we started.
• 19:14
SPEAKER_00: And when we first started, we only offered group training.
• 19:16
SPEAKER_00: And then as we, as we were surveying our clients and also as we wanted to get our clients better and faster results, we started finding that uh some sort of any kind of a one-on-one approach would be more efficient.
• 19:27
SPEAKER_00: And so majority of all our members are on some sort, some sort of one-on-one training protocol, but that could vary.
• 19:32
SPEAKER_00: It could be anything from personal training to just meeting with me for 15 minutes once a month, which costs nothing.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_00: So it just depends, but they're on some sort of one-on-one training protocol.
• 19:42
SPEAKER_01: Does nutrition come into play at all when it comes to Red Wolf too, or is it strictly like the the workouts side of it?
• 19:47
SPEAKER_00: Uh, we do do some nutrition consulting, but what we find is that people just kind of need like a guide rail for that.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_00: Cause what we find is that if we go a little too aggressive up front, you know, if I if I just throw a bunch of stuff at you, be like, oh, like Lane, you need to track your macros, track your calories.
• 20:03
SPEAKER_00: I need you to eat this much protein, this much carbs, this much fat.
• 20:06
  SPEAKER_00: Here's your micronutrients.
• 20:07
SPEAKER_00: Also, I need you train five times a week.
• 20:08
SPEAKER_00: I need you to walk 10,000 steps a day.
• 20:11
SPEAKER_00: It's like overwhelming for people.
• 20:12
SPEAKER_00: So, what we do is we try and try more of a lifestyle approach, be like, hey, try this just for 30 days.
• 20:18
SPEAKER_00: We'll see how much of an impact that makes, and we'll try another thing next.
• 20:20
SPEAKER_00: So try and make it more special.
• 20:22
SPEAKER_01: Especially if you're speaking to somebody that's like, I don't have enough time.
• 20:23
SPEAKER_01: And we're like, okay, now I need this, this, this, go outside and walk 10,000 steps.
• 20:26
  SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay.
• 20:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like overwhelming, right?
• 20:28
SPEAKER_00: Now I now I really don't have enough time.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like, oh, great, great.
• 20:31
SPEAKER_00: Now I'm just like a full-time like athlete again.
• 20:33
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 20:34
SPEAKER_01: Well, if the if the mic is yours and it is yours, and you want to speak to those that are hopefully watching in in Huntington Beach, is there anything that we haven't touched on uh so far that you would like to speak to our beautiful neighbors in in Huntington Beach about that we maybe haven't discussed, whether it's Red Wolf in general or CrossFit?
• 20:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I think the number one thing, other than I don't have enough time, but I think relating back to specifically CrossFit is that it looks intense.
• 21:00
SPEAKER_00: And, you know, it is known for its intensity, but I think that it's uh intensity is like a bundled term that we think is just like a switch, right?
• 21:08
SPEAKER_00: You just it's not an on and off switch where it's either intense or it's not intense.
• 21:12
  SPEAKER_00: It's it's a dial, you know, it's like a volume dial.
• 21:14
SPEAKER_00: I like kind of coming back what we talked about on the algorithm for Instagram.
• 21:18
SPEAKER_00: It's like I think people are used to seeing like the tier one top 1% of CrossFitters do all this crazy stuff and make it really intense and fall on the ground and all sweaty.
• 21:27
SPEAKER_00: But 95, 99% of my gym is like the intensity is dialed back to where it's intense, but it's intense relative to their fitness level and what their goals are and what they're comfortable with.
• 21:39
SPEAKER_01: Almost individually customized for what they need.
• 21:41
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 21:42
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 21:42
  SPEAKER_01: So let's say I I I'm raising my hand.
• 21:44
SPEAKER_01: Okay, I'm I'm want to explore Red Wolf.
• 21:46
SPEAKER_01: I want to explore CrossFit.
• 21:47
SPEAKER_01: Like, what's my first step?
• 21:49
SPEAKER_01: Do I call somebody ahead of time?
• 21:50
  SPEAKER_01: Do I walk in?
• 21:51
SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then once I get there, what what can I expect on my first day?
• 21:55
SPEAKER_00: So we start always start with a free intro, meaning that we just sit down with you and we just Talk to you about what your background is, what goals you have, how long you've been dealing with any kind of problems you've had.
• 22:07
SPEAKER_00: And then we also do a body composition scan so we can see what's going on underneath the hood.
• 22:12
SPEAKER_00: So we can, we can actually make our decision based on evidence and data rather than just being like, hey, Lane, let's just throw you in and hope you make it.
• 22:18
SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like we want to go in, you know, we don't want to like, you know, bowl blindfolded, right?
• 22:24
SPEAKER_00: It's like we have to at least know a little bit about you and where you want to go before we can, you know, prescribe anything for your fitness or throw you into the fire.
• 22:31
SPEAKER_00: It's like it makes no sense.
• 22:33
SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like at least we got to know something about you so that way we can make sure it's a good fit for you too.
• 22:37
SPEAKER_01: So if there's somebody that comes in and and they're new, they're a newbie, and then there's somebody that comes in and they're an expert, um, how like how are their workouts different?
• 22:46
SPEAKER_01: Like it because uh do they get like something ahead of time of like here's what you're gonna be doing today, or is there something on a board somewhere that says here's what you're supposed to be doing today, but it's modified for somebody that's newer?
• 22:55
SPEAKER_01: Like, how does that work out in comparison to an expert versus a newbie?
• 23:00
  SPEAKER_00: I love that question.
• 23:00
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 23:01
SPEAKER_00: So we have all these different levels in our classes.
• 23:03
SPEAKER_00: So we have like RX, which is like as the workout is written, and then we have a fitness plus version, which is like um like an intermediate version of the workout, and then we have a fitness version, which is like a beginner version of the workout.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_00: And we also have an RX Plus version, which is for people who've been doing it for like 10 years plus.
• 23:18
SPEAKER_00: So that way every one of different levels has an option they can choose from.
• 23:22
SPEAKER_00: But what really makes us different is that we take that as like a template, and then with all the data we gather from each person as an individual, we can modify things per individual.
• 23:31
SPEAKER_00: Because I have some people here who are in their 70s, you know, they don't need to be really be doing like snatches, overhead squats, and like handstand walks.
• 23:38
SPEAKER_00: So we we high we change the movement specifically for them on what they want to accomplish long term.
• 23:43
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 23:44
SPEAKER_01: And it sounds like, and and also if you maybe you're starting at the fitness level, um, you can probably build a program to get you to go to maybe graduate to the next level up as you continue to get stronger.
• 23:54
  SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
• 23:55
  SPEAKER_01: Okay, cool.
• 23:56
SPEAKER_01: Um and then it is there anything else, an event-wise, that uh, or because we know we covered Wadaploza, I want to also make sure that we cover everything that Red Wolf has to offer.
• 24:06
SPEAKER_01: Is there anything else that maybe we haven't touched on yet that you want to um talk about?
• 24:10
SPEAKER_01: Or are we we covered all the bases?
• 24:12
SPEAKER_01: I think we covered all the bases.
• 24:14
  SPEAKER_01: Set it a hull.
• 24:14
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 24:15
  SPEAKER_01: That was great.
• 24:15
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 24:16
  SPEAKER_01: Okay, good.
• 24:16
  SPEAKER_01: Well, I here's what I learned.
• 24:18
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 24:18
SPEAKER_01: I learned that it's very communal, very social.
• 24:21
SPEAKER_01: I learned that you can be any fitness level and still have a good time.
• 24:26
SPEAKER_01: I learned that if you don't have enough, or you feel like you don't have enough time, this is the perfect opportunity for you.
• 24:30
SPEAKER_01: I heard that if you want to go to the beach and enjoy it and be a spectator at some really cool events, the water flows is something that you should be checking out.
• 24:37
SPEAKER_01: I also heard that if you are single and you want to find your significant other and spouse and maybe get off the apps, you want to check out Red Wolf because you guys are matchmakers over there.
• 24:46
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 24:46
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Max is just one example of many.
• 24:49
  SPEAKER_01: Exactly, exactly.
• 24:50
SPEAKER_01: So hopefully we covered everything because this was really great.
• 24:53
SPEAKER_01: And uh, for me, as somebody who has just been a gym rat and hasn't really explored much of the um CrossFit world yet, I'm kind of open to exploring that and to networking and being social and having accountability partners.
• 25:06
SPEAKER_01: Cause when you go to the gym, it's you're kind of it's it's a very lonely thing.
• 25:09
SPEAKER_01: If you just put in your headphones, you know what you're gonna do, and you're just kind of alone and you're just it's uh I don't know.
• 25:15
SPEAKER_01: I just I think it'd be cool to be a part of like some sort of a family.
• 25:18
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 25:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's definitely helpful in the motivation aspect.
• 25:22
SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I guess that's another thing that people say, it's like, you know, I have enough time, or that CrossFit's too intense for me, or that you know, I just don't have the motivation.
• 25:32
SPEAKER_00: And so, well, if you put yourself in an environment where everyone else is motivated, it's kind of hard not to be motivated.
• 25:37
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 25:38
SPEAKER_01: Well, I hope you enjoyed watching this because I enjoyed having this interview.
• 25:40
SPEAKER_01: But if you want to learn anything more about Red Wolf CrossFit, if you want to learn anything more about Watapalooza or what we have going on here and how to stay fit in Huntington Beach, well, everything's gonna be in the show notes.
• 25:51
  SPEAKER_01: We enjoyed this interview.
• 25:53
  SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna leave you with what I do each and every week.
• 25:56
  SPEAKER_01: Do good.
• 25:56
  SPEAKER_01: Huntington Beach deserves it.
• 25:58
SPEAKER_01: I will see you on the next one.
• 25:59
SPEAKER_01: Thanks again for coming by.
• 26:01
  SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
• 26:01
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 26:02
  unknown: Cool.
