- 0:00It's the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show, Mike Crispino, Dan Hurley together.
- 0:05A little later on in the show, we'll talk to Donovan Klinging a lot
- 0:08of ground to cover coach. First of all, the Empire Classic Kansas coming
- 0:13up later this week. Unh you played Texas and you played Indiana at the
- 0:19Garden and the Huskies are wearing success well in my opinion, I mean,
- 0:24thirteen straight wins now dating back to the NCAA Tournament last year, and not
- 0:29often did teams come back from winning titles like that and kind of pick up
- 0:33where they left off. First off, how are you guys doing it?
- 0:36Because it looks like you are almost the same team without the same guys that
- 0:42you were last year. Yeah. Well, you know, I think we
- 0:46we obviously have a style of play, yeah, that we've developed here and
- 0:54you know, commitment I think to the things that we want to do strategically
- 1:00on offense, defense, you know, as a team that rebounds, you
- 1:07know, obviously you have different different players, you know, different players or
- 1:15in different roles. You know, guys that were you know, fourth or
- 1:18fifth starters now have to become leading men or sixth man. Needs to be
- 1:23now the face of the organization, and you know, so we have some
- 1:26continuity, but we also have people that have got to go from supporting actors
- 1:33to Will Smith. By the way, at the Garden, your record now
- 1:40seven and six as a head coach. That's you were over to five hundred
- 1:42mark by beating Indiana and Texas. Let's talk about that. Who's your game,
- 1:47though, Dan, I mean, I felt like we're in a in
- 1:49a someone else's arena, and that's not usually typical at the Garden because Yukon
- 1:55plays well there and it's sort of a second home court or whatever. But
- 1:59Indiana, I mean, they loaded that joint with red jerseys and they made
- 2:02a lot of noise. Yeah they did. And there was also some Louis
- 2:07Villain there, you know as well. So I think, you know,
- 2:09I think I looked around during the anthem and I was pretty surprised. I
- 2:14was surprised to see as much Indiana as I did. You know, well,
- 2:20we played them at the Garden a couple of years back for the Jimmy
- 2:23v. H. I didn't feel like that. It didn't look like that.
- 2:28You know, it's a credit to you know, their staff and you
- 2:30know the season they had last year and the expectations that they have for this
- 2:36year. But yeah, I thought it was it was it was a really
- 2:39good atmosphere. You kind of out scored them thirty seven to thirty first half,
- 2:44had a big second half of forty points. Tristan Newton in that game,
- 2:47twenty three points. The number that stands out to me, and I
- 2:52know you appreciate this kind of stuff. Fowls drawn. He drew ten fouls
- 2:55in that game. That is a big number. Yeah, yeah, that's
- 3:00uh, that's a great number. I think he really used as a savvy
- 3:05i Q you know. And then that's obviously there's it's a game that's uh
- 3:13being officiated that way, so there's more opportunities to uh, you know,
- 3:16to get to the line and find your way to the line. You know.
- 3:21There's also gonna be a lot of nights in the Big East where you're
- 3:24gonna have to finish through contact and not they hardly call any founs. So
- 3:29it's uh, you know, really good guards can play on both nights and
- 3:32read how the officials are blowing the blowing the whistle. Yeah, you can
- 3:38on the season, I think plus fifty one and feel free throw attempts.
- 3:40That's a great number. Uh, that night you had twenty five attempts.
- 3:45Who's yours at twenty eight? But get into the line. How important is
- 3:49that as we go forward here with all these tough opponents coming up. Yeah,
- 3:53I just think it's uh, it's really important. I think you're getting
- 3:59smarter in terms of our defense, more disciplined, fouling less on our end,
- 4:06you know, and from an offensive standpoint, you know, with the
- 4:10pass, with the cut, with with with with the drive, trying to
- 4:14put as much pressure on the rim as we can, you know, to
- 4:17try to get to the foul line, because you really you want you know,
- 4:20you want good threes, you want deep twos, and you want free
- 4:26throws. You know. The assist numbers DAN this year, I think nineteen
- 4:30and a half a game. I said, that's a huge number. But
- 4:33is that more important or the limiting turnovers in your mind? I mean,
- 4:39they're both important, and we'd be we'd be higher with the assists if if
- 4:46we were shooting better. You know, we've shot the ball poorly to start
- 4:49the year, and we don't think that trend will continue. We believe in
- 4:56our shooters. But the turnover number is the one that that that really eats
- 5:00away at you. You know, we don't and and for us to be
- 5:04successful offensively, we don't have uh, we don't have a ton of great
- 5:09well on one players. So you know, are kind of the way we
- 5:12play is built around ball movement, player movement, good screening, and shop
- 5:17thinking. And you do have to have good passing players, don't you.
- 5:21I mean, I know, I love the way offense runs. When it's
- 5:25running well, guys are moving, you know, hitting the open cutters and
- 5:29all that. But you still have to have a team that has has players
- 5:32that can pass the ball. Sometimes you you kind of get stuck with a
- 5:35team and they're not a lot of great passers. It might be a lot
- 5:39of great scorers, but maybe the passing isn't the highest level. Yeah,
- 5:43you got to be able to think the game and see the game, and
- 5:46you know, take a picture in your mind of the court before you catch
- 5:49the ball. You know, whether it's a guard that gets it in transition
- 5:55and takes that that court picture before it even starts the the blest ball down
- 6:00the court, or before you catch the ball versus man and zone. You
- 6:03you're you're taking a picture in your mind of where all the offensive players and
- 6:10defensive players are. And and that's what the best game processors do. Yeah,
- 6:16the Texas game Husky's won the championship. Just in a side coach.
- 6:21I know, as a hooper, when you played on the college level,
- 6:25you had all the slick moves. You're the point guard, you ran the
- 6:28team. I don't recall you jumping that high, but when the trophy was
- 6:31given on the center court there at the Garden, you were jumping as high
- 6:36as I've ever seen you. So yeah, tell us about that. I
- 6:40mean, there's really only two things in that we that you're in it for,
- 6:44right, I mean, you're in it for the relationships. Right to
- 6:48impact, impact the lives of your players, make them, you know,
- 6:54add value to their lives, like they're they're they're better for having gone through
- 6:58the program. They go off into the world like an Andre Jackson or Jordan
- 7:01Hawkins or an RJ. Cole or Isaia Whaley and they move on to success.
- 7:06Like that's like, that's one part of it that's incredible. The other
- 7:10only other part of it that is anything for me that is winning something big
- 7:15or just winning or just I mean everything else. There's no value in so
- 7:23I'll tell you man that you were jumping for joy. It was great to
- 7:26see we won something, you know, like actual championship, winning a four
- 7:30team tournament. It was the first chance to win a championship since we won
- 7:34the Ultimate Championship. And if that didn't do it for you, then you
- 7:40shouldn't be with me. Yeah, it was great to see the joy out
- 7:43there. I'll tell you what. All right, little more on Texas,
- 7:45We're gonna take a quick break. We're here with Dan Hurley the Yukon Men's
- 7:47Basketball Coaches Show. We got Kansas to talk about the Jayhawks coming up and
- 7:51a lot of other tough opponents that's coming up. As we continue on the
- 7:56Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Dan Hurley here on lear Field,
