2:21
a summit or gathering if you will, that's coming to Charleston a little later
2:23
on. Delicate Lewis and I will get into that. Plus the announcement made
2:28
I guess late last week that one of Charleston's most iconic businesses, Pew Furniture,
2:32
was going to be closing their doors after one hundred eight years in a
2:36
business. Beth Pew is going to join us to discuss that a little bit
2:38
later on. And how about some pot Yeah, the City of Charleston is
2:44
taking a look at a proposal. Well it's actually a committee as part of
2:49
city council a proposal and there's you know, some petitions that have gone around
2:53
and it's it's a little complicated. I'm'll try to get into that a little
2:58
bit later on as well. Plus, your phone calls and text are welcome.
3:00
Is always big Lely Pickley Wiggly Hotline three zero four, three four five

five zero zero eights. I want to talk a little pickleball to start us
3:12
off, though, Johnny Rutherford and Todd Filer here, Good morning, gentlemen.
3:15
Johnny metro nine one one, Good morning, How are you? Good
3:17
morning? Dave, appreciate you have us here. Let me have you come
3:21
into that microphone a little bit clier. You're you're a tall guy, so
3:23
we may maybe raise it up just to tag. All right, there you
3:27
go, and Todd files with us. Hey, Todd, how are you
3:29
man? I'm doing great, Dave? Thank you? All right, So
3:31
you know, calling what you guys are doing in Nitro later this week would
3:36
be if I called it a tournament, it would be kind of slight on
3:38
my part because there's so much there's so much more that goes on with this.
3:45
Just take it from the top and then we'll get into specifics. Johnny,
3:46
we'll start with you. Well, first of all, it's an event.
3:49
This is our second year. We have over two right two hundred players
3:53
coming in from fifteen different states coming in. Todd. We'll talk about some
3:57
of the pros we have coming in. Friday night is community Night. We
4:00
invite everybody to come out free swimming at the Nitro Complex. Free, there's
4:04
music, there's a pickle eating contest, free pickleball play. If you don't
4:09
know how to play pickleball, Kyle Mullins, we give them free pickleball listens
4:13
for people to learn, and we have a full day Friday, Saturday and
4:15
Sunday a pickleball It's gonna be a lot of fun. We encourage people to
4:18
come out and watch, come out and learn, and it's free, come
4:21
out and enjoy themselves. And we got people. As you said, we
4:25
talked about having the top ranked a female player in the world here. We
4:28
had our on the show the last time you guys were here. We'll get
4:30
into that a little bit later on. But as far as the level of
4:32
players that are coming in, I mean we got them coming from all over
4:35
time. Yeah, we do. We have Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania,
4:41
Idaho, Florida, I mean fourteen different states, like Johnny said so,
4:46
and you know the prize. The purse was fifteen thousand dollars, which enticed
4:50
a lot of people to come and play from a higher level perspective. And
4:56
we have right now at least a dozen and certified pro players coming So that's
5:02
that's amazing. And again every time you guys are on, I talk about
5:05
this about the popularity of pickleball. I mean, this thing is gone and
5:10
it's a sport that pretty much anybody can play. As you said, we
5:15
have pro level players coming in. You've got, you know, basically,
5:18
you know, to use other analogies. You've got Aaron Judge coming in.
5:21
You know, you've got to You've got Patrick Mahomes those times, I'm just
5:27
trying to give people an analogy of how big these players are and the notoriety
5:30
of these players that are coming in. But you've also got you know,
5:33
the guy down the street as well, everybody you know, mister Mallins are
5:38
one of our instructors with the Charleston Pickleball Club. He averages twenty people a
5:43
week on his beginner's class. He gives a beginner class down Nitro and he
5:46
averages twenty people a week. So it's really growing every every week. It
5:49
grows. Yeah, and let's talk about Susannah Barr. We had her on
5:54
the show the last time you guys were here, and we called her up.
5:56
I think she was actually in her home in Idaho, and what a
6:00
great story. I mean, you know, a veteran. So we thank
6:02
her for service on the air. But she's as good as it gets.
6:06
I mean, she's the best, right. Yes, she's in her group,
6:12
which is the app Association of Pickleball Professionals. She's the number one female
6:18
doubles ranked and we're very happy to have her. She's also traveling with her
6:25
partner in coaching, who is Dominic Catalano. He's an ESPN commentator for the
6:33
APP League, and they're going to be putting on clinics. So the next
6:39
big thing where you know, we want to make sure people are aware of
6:42
is Friday and Monday. We have some clinics eight to ten and ten to
6:48
twelve Friday and Monday, and they're going to be putting them on. So
6:53
it's a once in a lifetime chance for people to get some instruction from some
6:59
really high level people. So she's not only going to play, she's coming
7:03
to help teach. That's awesome. I mean, this is kind of giving
7:05
back and giving something. When we had her on the show a couple of
7:09
months ago, she talked about that about wanting to give back to people.
7:12
Let's talk about things going on just for the general community though. I mean
7:15
there's a community night. Talk about that, Johnny Friday Night's exciting for us.
7:17
We're still looking for pickle leaders. We're having a pick leading the amount
7:20
all of pick leading content. How many did you get did this last year?
7:24
Do you remember how many of the winner eight last year? And what
7:26
the timeframe was, Yeah, five minutes seat pickles that winter had eleven eleven
7:30
pickles and you know we're talking like full size all full size coachher deal pickles.
7:35
He won, he did eleven, he went. You went one hundred
7:38
dollars into the pickle Trophy, which is the highlight of the night. And
7:42
like I said, there's free music, free swimming, free pickleball lessons and
7:45
this is all taking place where at the Nitro Sports Complex and it's all free
7:47
and we invite the community to come out. We have a lot of fun.
7:50
That's the event part than the real serious tournament. After that, I
7:53
mean, I think that it's great too that not only are you doing this
7:56
out of Nitro and hat's off to the folks with as well with the city
8:01
and what can it takes a lot of people to pull this thing off,
8:03
but you're giving something for people back, for the community that may not even
8:07
even play pickleball, you know, just just to come and learn about the
8:11
sport and need some pickles, and we'll have food trucks. We're gonna have
8:16
a good time. It'll be a lot of fun when people come out and
8:18
enjoy themselves. Absolutely again, we're talking with Todd File and Johnny Rutherford about
8:22
this big event. Let's talk about sponsors. I mean, I know Ohio
8:24
Valley Bank has been has been a real big part of this. Mention any
8:28
other sponsors that you need to or do you still need sponsors? Well,
8:31
of course, we're always looking for sponsors, but we're in good shape.
8:35
The community has supported us a great, great deal, so we're in good
8:39
shape right there, and so we're always we're always looking and some of our
8:45
sponsors. I'd be glad to mention him here as soon as he finds the
8:48
ship. In other words, I got you ed. I know, I
8:54
know all about it. I got like forty eight pieces of paper for every
8:56
ten minute segment here. So well, I'm just gonna go real quick.
9:00
High Valley Bank, Motorola Habits Wrecker Advantage, Calvin Royals, Jewelers, City
9:05
National Bank, Copley's Duck, scaff uh To, Tim Deapiro and Cova Hutches,
9:11
Wrecker, Mason Berry, Mount Olive Pickles, the City of Nitro,
9:16
three ps USI Warner Law Office is Tron and CRW Airport. So we have
9:22
a lot of sponsors, we have a lot of community input. Talking again
9:26
about the big, big pickleball event that's happening over the next So it all
9:30
starts on Friday, Friday, and it actually we'll run through Monday. I
9:33
guess with the with the with the lessons. Yeah, the last clinics will
9:35
be finishing up Monday at noon. But Ay Valance showing five any live brought
9:39
to you apart by Jute for the best insecurity systems for both your home or
9:43
business. Talk to Jute of Tay's Valley visit protected by Jute dot com.
9:46
It's j O O T dot com. And you're talking about this fifteen thousand
9:52
dollars that's on the line. I guess for the is there like a grand
9:54
prize winner or of this event. The fifteen thousand dollars is a total purse
10:00
and we have five open events which is what the pros will play in,
10:03
and each one of those events has a certain amount of money on the line,
10:09
so they'll be first, second, and third place monetary prizes for those
10:16
So that's where it really gets competitive. And Todd, if I'm correct,
10:18
Sunday's the main day for the pros. Is that correct? Well, yeah,
10:22
yes, so if you're if you're really interested, I mean, Saturday
10:26
is going to be big. We'll have the women's doubles and the mixed doubles.
10:31
But Monday you're going to see some pretty exciting or Sunday you're going to
10:33
see some pretty exciting stuff. The men's singles, which there are sixteen people
10:39
entered, will start at eight am, and the men's doubles, which there
10:45
are fourteen teams registered, will start around noon. And if you want to
10:48
see some high level play, if you really want to see what the next
10:52
levels like, that would be the great time to come by and see.
10:56
And what if people want to Glad Johnny you had another one. And I
11:00
was just gonna make the point too. We have a lot of pros playing
11:01
come watching, but there's a lot of a lot of people like me who
11:03
aren't that good that play in between. So just come out and support your
11:07
friends and enjoy, enjoy the time. And I'm still fascinated by this pickle
11:11
eating contest. All right, So how much does a grand pros winner get?
11:15
Is he a trophy or one hundred dollars cash dollars cash the trophy?
11:18
And if you're interested, going the Metro nine to one one Facebook page and
11:22
send us a message and we'll contact you and get you signed up. All
11:24
right, how are the sign ups going so far? We're about halfway there.
11:28
We need more, okay, we need more, but we're doing for
11:31
Do you divide people up into like men, women or is it just all
11:33
together, any age groups or anything, because I know last week it Regatta
11:37
at the hot dog eating contest, they had everybody just there together. So
11:39
we're all together. The thing we watch is you have to be over eighteen
11:43
years ago. You have to be eighteen, yes, yes, and well
11:46
you should be able to that. I'm not thinking about entering, don't get
11:50
me wrong. Okay, but you said it was eleven just regular sized pickles.
11:56
Now we're not talking Hamburger deals. We're talking about full sized pickles eight
12:00
eleven and five minutes. Yes, is that what you said, I think
12:03
that should be attainable. Somebody, I think you should come out and do
12:07
I didn't say that, I just said I think that should be attainable.
12:09
You mentioned the Facebook page. Is that the best place for people to get
12:11
information about this event? Johnny, come come to the Metro nine one one
12:15
facebook page. You can call our non emergency number if you'd like it seven
12:18
four six seven nine one one, But the Facebook page is best. And
12:20
let's talk about proceeds from all this. I know you said, you know
12:24
these things are free for people to come out, but there are certain things,
12:28
certain ways to raise money here. So where do the proceeds going?
12:31
Well, after we pay for the tournament, of course the money this money
12:33
is meant to support the nine one one Employee Association, and we have hard
12:37
working employees. Every day they're doing CPR on the phone and till on ambulance
12:41
arrives. They're you know, taking care of citizens by emergency personnel or in
12:46
route. And what we do we use this money to when someone does CPR
12:50
and is able to save a life or just does a real good job,
12:52
we give them a gift card for twenty five bucks or whatever to go out
12:56
and have dinner and just a way to reward them reward then we can all
13:00
pay what we should and this is just a way to reward our employees.
13:03
All right, Well, guys, I appreciate you being here, and again,
13:05
just go over to the Metro nine to one one Facebook page. It's
13:07
going to be several days. I was I didn't. I guess my mind
13:11
didn't wrap itself around that. It was that it was a Monday as well.
13:13
So it's a great way to get lessons from the best in the business.
13:18
You got how many states represented? Again from top teen fifteen different states?
13:22
Far away is probably Idaho's probably the furthest away, idah Hoes the farthest
13:24
right now. Yeah, they're all coming in for this thing. So it's
13:26
all at the Nitro Sports Complex. Johnny Tod I appreciate you guys being here.

16:56
to welcome into the show Delegate Hollis Lewis. Good morning, sir, morning,
17:00
how you doing. Thanks for having me, sir, Thank you for
17:02
being here. Just talking to Johnny Rutherford and Todd File about that big deal
17:06
with the pickleball out of Nitro. At the Nitro Sports Company, you will
17:10
play pickleball. You know what. My wife bought me a pick a ball
17:12
sell where the kids bought me a pickle ball set for Father's Day. So
17:17
you know, I'm a tennis player, so I played as an adult.
17:18
So I'm I'm anxious to get out there and learn pickleball. Well, they're
17:22
given free lessons out there. Well I actually don't know. I'm sorry they're
17:25
giving lessons out there. I don't think that they're free, but the event
17:27
itself is free. Bring the kid in a pickle eating contest too, Okay,
17:32
I like a good deal. Pickle Oh yeah, well there's a big
17:34
Deli style pickles. But anyway, I get some legislative stuff I want to
17:38
discuss with you a little bit later on. But you've got an event coming
17:41
up in Charleston that you wanted to talk about. It's the Crisis Intervention Team's
17:45
Summit. Get us the overall view on that, Okay. Crisis Intervention Teams
17:48
or c i T is a a partnership between law enforcement, community advocates,
17:55
mental health professionals, and different community partners in order to build a better response
17:59
to persons in crisis. The summit we bring together professionals from around the reason
18:04
region to network too, you know, for those who already have established c
18:08
i T programs, for those who want to have ci T programs, just
18:11
to learn more about it from uh, you know, subject matter experts in
18:15
the field. And now what is your role in all this? Well,
18:18
I work for First Choice Service, So I'm the West Virginia c i T
18:21
Project Director. So our job is to number one, help facilitate trainings through
18:26
agencies around the state. And we just helped build the c i T programs
18:30
in various communities. And the thing is with c i T, it's community
18:34
based so a c I T program, we do have national standards. However,
18:38
it's gonna look different from community community. So it actually helps and can
18:44
help facilitate any problems in your community and you know, hopefully come molt some
18:48
good solutions. What's a daily what what what's an average day in this sort
18:52
of field look like? I mean, I know there's no such thing as
18:53
an average day, but what's what's what's it look like? Well, again,
18:57
it's just like I said, working with law enforcement, working with you
19:00
know, persons in what we call the christ and Continuum. What we do
19:04
is we help facilitate forty hour trainings because you want to send a certain percent
19:10
of your agency or department to get this forty hour training and it helps with
19:15
the escalation tactics. Is going to help building those community connections because a lot
19:19
of times we don't even know the services that are in our community. So
19:23
that's what we want to do and that's what we try to help establish.
19:26
And this event's going to be win This is July twenty ninth through the thirty
19:30
first. You can learn more about it at w vci T dot com and
19:34
it's all going to be here and it's going to be hearing Charleston at the
19:37
Embassy suites. All right, Well, I mean you have a lot of
19:40
people. Yeah, I would imagine, Yeah, we will, Like I
19:41
said, we'll have leaders, leaders, officials, and leadership from various you
19:45
know, firefighters to law enforcement, to mental health professionals, advocates and so
19:52
on here. So it's going to be a great event, great for networking,
19:53
and great for learning about it. And there are so many different parts,
19:56
Delegate that go into this. I would think, like you said,
19:59
this is when you think about the crisis intervention team, But I didn't even
20:02
even thought about, you know, the first responders a partner. Obviously they're
20:04
going to be, but I guess my mind was thinking paramedics, not firemen.
20:07
But they're all they're all important in this. Yeah, one hundred percent.
20:11
Because what you have to realize from our research, about fifty percent of
20:15
dispatch casts, particularly to law enforcement, are of a crisis nature. So
20:21
law enforcement are that the fact though, behavioral health professionals and a lot of
20:26
communities that don't have these sort of that don't have the facilities and don't have
20:30
the services that Charleston may have throughout the state of West Virginia. So it's
20:33
very important that you know. Number one, we know what's in our community,
20:37
and we have the proper training so that we can help facilitate some some
20:41
and manage some of these crisis situations. And Charleston again has got a lot
20:45
of as you said, a lot of resources, but not so much when
20:48
you get into some of the smaller, more retal areas. This is important.
20:52
And then in addition, it helps with liability issues. So overall,
20:56
it's just a it's a great thing. And like I said, this is
21:00
going to be a great event to you know, connect the dots and just
21:03
to meet people from around the state who are interested in this work and give
21:06
us to date. Again, it's going to be July twenty ninth through the
21:07
thirty first at the Embassy Suites in Charleston, West Virginia. You can go
21:12
to a West Virginia c I T excuse me, wvc i T dot com
21:18
to learn more. There's a lot of information available. You sent me a
21:19
link yesterday down again, I studied at yesterday evening. There's a lot of
21:25
information there and I'm going to get that contact information back out to you as
21:27
we wrap up the segment a little later on the Dave Island Show in five
21:30
ety Life is brought to you apart by Hustan's Pizza this month is your favorite
21:33
Hustan's order any regularly priced large ten inch pizza and get a two liter pepsi
21:37
at no additional charge. So I said, we'll circle back to that a
21:41
little bit later on, but I want to talk about your roles legislator.
21:44
First of all, how's it going? I mean this on in there.
21:47
So this is my first session, so I was able to sit back and
21:49
I learned a lot, and you know, you know, we want to
21:53
be on the right side of history with the same things we do. I'm
21:56
a Democrat. We got a small contingency, but we fight hard for things
21:59
we belie. Even a lot of the talk out of state government these days
22:03
delicate seems to be about the budget surplus. You know, the governor had
22:04
the presser uh last week with the balloons and and everything. Think you were
22:10
part of that. What is your take on all this, On all this
22:14
excess money the state has, you know, I mean have excess. It's
22:17
always good when we talk about tax cuts. We don't want to cut ourselves
22:21
to death, right. We want to make sure that we'll stay able to
22:25
you know, fix our roles and provide the services that people need. And
22:30
but you've got to do things, as you said, as others have said
22:32
too, they have to be done responsibly, Yes, sir, And the
22:36
governor is scheduled to be I think looking at calling you folks back but possibly
22:41
later this summer, where we're going to discuss tax cuts more tax cuts.
22:45
In addition, there's been some pause even you mentioned you're a Democrat. There's
22:48
been some pause even from some Republicans I know. Sende Finance Jeric Tar,
22:52
who's going to be on this show tomorrow, was one that kind of just
22:55
said, okay, let's just let's just hold on a minute here. And
22:57
anybody that knows Senator Tar knows that he's one that tends to be more frugal
23:03
with the spending, you know, and sometimes it puts some of the odds
23:06
with the governor. Where are you on these tax guns? Well, you
23:07
know, I would say I have a similar sentiment. We don't want to
23:14
cut ourselves where we're actually cutting into services that the people of this state need.
23:19
So I think we should slow down, make sure that we are doing
23:25
things deliberately, intentionally However, like I said, we don't want to hurt
23:29
services that are desperately needed within our states. Yeah. I mean again,
23:32
you got to kind of take a look at and make sure that you're doing
23:34
all the right now. And again, when it comes to budget issues,
23:37
you always you don't want to move fast. You want to move slow to
23:41
make sure that you know everything's accounted for. And we still got some issues.
23:45
We have to deal with a lot of issues. And it's been all
23:48
over the news as you well know, and this kind of goes to your
23:52
daytime job. I guess a little bit. You probably touch on this a
23:53
little bit, and it has to do with CPS, it has to do
23:56
with foster care. So we got a lot of issues there, a lot
23:59
of issues. You know. I think the last number was about six thousand
24:02
kids in foster care. So it's still one of the highest rates in the
24:07
nation. Yeah, so I think the rates is still growing unfortunately, So
24:10
we want to make sure that we can start to I think we we got
24:14
to reach out to families. We got to get more education out to communities
24:18
to see, you know, where where maybe some of these kids can be
24:21
placed at. And then families that are suitable to actually taking some of these
24:26
kids and make sure that our system is actually reaching out to family members of
24:30
these kids to place them in a you know, with blood relations. And
24:34
there has been during this whole crisis, whether it's a Kennedy Miller situation,
24:40
Bill County had the horrible situation with the kids out in the Sistansville area.
24:45
There have been so many of these and it seems like there's been a lot
24:47
of a lot of finger pointing going around, you know, from a lot
24:49
of different sources, which is unfortunate. Yeah, and it's a tough these
24:53
are these are very very tough circumstances. So fingerpoint is not going to help.
24:57
We want to make sure that we just have more streamlined system where we
25:00
have open communication and you know, we're given our CPS workers, we're given
25:07
our agencies the resources that they need in order to do the job to the
25:12
best of their abilities. Talk to him with delicate Hollis Lewis, all right,
25:15
we'll get away from the capitol and go back to the go back to
25:18
the daytime. I can't have a sitting legislator here not ask them a couple
25:22
of questions. Let's let's let's get back to the summit again in case people
25:26
are tuning in late to give us the overview of it and give us the
25:29
dates and give us the websites and the stuff. Go ahead, Okay,
25:32
Crisis Intervention Team Summit. It is going to be July twenty ninth through the
25:37
thirty first here in Charleston at the Embassy Suites. It's going to be a
25:41
three day event where you're going to have the opportunity to learn from subject matter
25:45
experts in ci T from around the state and around the region. If you're
25:48
interested in, you know, establishing a ci T program, if you want
25:52
to have a form of better methodology, this is the event for you.
25:56
If you're just a community partner that's you know, that wants to improve our
26:00
response to these persons in crisis, because, as we mentioned earlier, you
26:03
know, here in West Virginia we have a obviously we have a substance to
26:07
sort of problem. We have a mental health problem. So I think this
26:11
is going to be pregnant for all agencies and all you know, towns and
26:14
leadership involved. All right, and again, hit that just one more time.

announced a couple of days ago that Pew Furniture, one of Charleston's most iconic

29:59
now via the big Ley pig Ley Wiggly Hotline Beth, good morning, welcome
30:03
to the show. Well, thank you sir, well, thank you for
30:06
being here. Why so here's the big question, why the decision to close.
30:10
Well, I'm retirement age. I've been doing this with my husband Steve
30:18
for pushing forty years, and I have the biggest reason probably is my two
30:22
darling grandchildren who are two and a half and will be four. So I'm
30:26
just ready to spend a little more time with them and do some traveling and
30:30
just not have to get up every morning. I understand that. Give us
30:34
the history of Pew Frenchsure, obviously you haven't been there the entire time.
30:40
I would open not but give us the give us the overall history of Pew
30:42
Furniture. My husband's grandfather built the business in nineteen seventeen and ran it as
30:51
wholesale and we sold tons of you know, wholesale stuff to cold camps and
30:57
things like that where they had to store, and so we were strictly wholesale,
31:02
and then pushing in the seventies we switched over to retail and that's the
31:08
way it's been since then. And so so is this it. I mean,
31:12
I know that you're gonna be stepping away, as you said, you
31:15
want to spend some time with the grandkids, and you and your you and
31:18
and Steve of course, worked very very hard at this business. But is
31:22
this it. Well, yes, I think we're going to still maintain like
31:27
the baby furniture and lift chairs and probably mattresses, but we're scaling way down
31:34
well. And it's interesting when you said the baby furniture and the and the
31:40
chairs and things of that nature, because having been at this company for the
31:44
last four years and another company in town before that, I can hear that
31:47
in your radio voice, you doing those commercials talking talking about those things.
31:52
So well, thank you, And I mentioned that Pugh of course is one
31:56
of the most iconic businesses here in Charleston, not only servicing Charleston obviously,
32:02
but the entire region. And it's it's tough to see that go away.
32:07
Well, thank you, I appreciate it, and we hope we've people have
32:09
been great. I've gotten all kinds of hugs and you know, lovely comments
32:15
and people you know, sending me notes and stuff. So it's it's a
32:19
bittersweet thing. Indeed, to day is talking again with bet Pew for Pure

32:44
I also know Beth that having worked on various projects in the community kind
32:51
of alongside, you know, with you, as I said, dear my
32:52
radio career, I realized it very It's always been very important for your family
32:58
to give back to the community. Yes, thank you for bringing that up.
33:00
We've always loved doing your All's Hope Room, and we've done you know,
33:07
other things. We're doing some school supplies for one organization, and you
33:12
know we we do toys for tots and stuff like that. So we tried
33:15
to be, you know, to give back and that was always very important
33:20
to Steve and I. We had a text of the show and I'm gonna
33:23
go ahead and ask you this. Somebody said, why don't you just sell
33:25
the business? Is that not in the cards? No, I don't think
33:30
that that is that's a you know, a you know, fair question.
33:35
But I think with what we have planned to do that I think what we're
33:37
doing is the best plan of action for us right now. All right,
33:42
So what is the timeline here? Well, probably, you know, there's
33:45
no excuse me, definite timeline, but probably you know, four or five
33:50
weeks we hope to have it wrapped up. Well, I know, it's
33:53
a lot of thought and prayer and meetings and meeting with accountants and you know,
34:00
retirement people. As she said, has gone has gone. This wasn't
34:02
an easy decision for you and your family, Beth. I'm very sure that
34:06
it was. My daughter and I you know, shed some tears and you
34:09
know, debated it, but I think I think, you know, ultimately
34:13
we made the right decision. All right. Well, Beth, you know
34:15
you're certainly good to the community over the years, not to mention this radio
34:19
station with not only the dollars, the ad dollars, but everything that you
34:22
put folks, that you folks put back into community. And it feels like
34:27
to me, and I don't know what exactly the whole future is going to
34:29
be for you guys will work all that out, but it feels to me
34:31
like a piece of Charleston is kind of going away with this. Well that's
34:35
that's very sweet, thank you. I I am you know that's part of
34:37
the bittersweet of it. But as we like being down here, we like,
34:43
you know, seeing the regulars come in and you know, you have
34:46
grandparents bringing, you know, buying cribs for their you know, grandchildren and
34:51
great grandchildren, so you know we're multiple generations down here. All right.
34:57
Well, Beth, I know you've got a lot to do. I appreciate
34:58
you taking time to schedule and is today thanks a lot best Pew of Pew
35:00
furniture on the on their on their closing. But you know, I know
35:05
exactly the entire story, what what exactly is going to happen here in the
35:08
future. I mean, it sounds obviously like BET's ready to spend some time
35:10
with those grandkids. Uh. But it has been a big part of,
35:16
uh, of the Charleston landscape, you know, for many many and again
35:20
not just Charleston, but really this entire part of West Virginia. I mean,
35:22
you travel a lot all over West Virginia as I do, You'll see
35:24
some billboards popping up in places you wouldn't expect, you know, for Pew
35:29
Furniture, and uh, just they've been very good to us here and other
35:32
places that I've been. But I think what you miss more on a business
35:37
like that, as you said, it's you walk to the door and you
35:39
know the people that are there. Uh. And every town, every community
35:44
has a place like that. We certainly had those types of businesses and some
35:47
thankfully still are around. Uh. In my hometown, when you go in,
35:52
everybody knows you. Sound like you know the opening theme cheers here where
35:55
everybody knows your name, but they do know you. But it's not just
35:59
about the private product as much as it is about the importance of giving back
36:04
to the community. And that's what the folks I think a Pew Furniture have
36:07
done for many, many years. So I appreciate Beth for joining us.
36:09
Certainly was a surprise to a lot of people when they made that announcement.

37:14
Waight. I had a text about Metro nine one one when I had Johnny
37:17
Rutherford and Todd file on earlier talking about their the pickleball event that's going to
37:22
be happening this week, and Johnny Rutherford though was not really here in his
37:29
in his state as as far as being on the job this morning, so
37:31
I didn't feel it was fair to ask him this, But I will.
37:34
I'm sure Johnny listens to the show every day and he texts me, so
37:37
I'll go ahead and read the text. And he wants to respond to it,
37:39
he can. If not, the next time I have him on and
37:42
he's here in his official role as as the guy for Metro nine to one
37:46
one, he can. He can address this, then, it says Dave,
37:50
speaking of pot, could Johnny Rutherford address why Metro nine to one dispatchers
37:53
aren't allowed to use medical marijuana and have fired hard working dispatchers for doing so
37:59
even with the doctor's recommendation. Meanwhile, prescribe xanax, adderall opiates and other
38:04
dangerous prescription drugs are fine. Again, I know John's listened, so if
38:07
he wants to respond to that, he can. If not, the next
38:10
time I have him on the show, I will have him when he's not
38:14
talking about pickleball, I will have him on to discuss that let me see
38:22
tex says it's weird. For years, you mean and me have explained to
38:27
everyone in Charleston that you're anti Trump, which assume isn't because he's a bad
38:31
person, but because of the damage he can do to this country as a
38:35
bad person. Yet, until recently I followed you on social media and all
38:38
you do is scream at large Twitter accounts that do anything but relentlessly criticize Biden.
38:45
I'm ashamed. I browse your history and you're not so free in chasing
38:50
the pro Trump accounts? Is it because pro Trump accounts will engage and this
38:54
cult is psycho But the typical old man is the guy you chase around while
39:00
platform me local Trump weirdos? You do you, my friend? Not everyone
39:05
can have actual convictions of the courage required of them, you know I am.
39:10
Let me just say this, I was a little late to the game
39:14
to x the artist formerly known as as Twitter. I have been really,
39:20
I guess the last couple of days. Well, okay, let me back
39:23
up. Let me let me weigh in on the thing about me being anti
39:28
Trump. First of all, as I have said, I did not start
39:30
out as anti Trump. You know the story I've said it ten thousand times.
39:35
I voted for Donald Trump in twenty sixteen. I voted for Donald Trump
39:37
in twenty twenty. He wasn't my favorite candidate at those particular times, but
39:44
I voted for him. But after January sixth, that was the first nail
39:50
in the proverbial coffin on on Donald Trump for me. So to say I
39:54
was always anti Trump, that's that's not true, because I was and I
39:59
voted that. Matter of fact, I was perusing some old pictures on my
40:02
phone the other day and found myself at a campaign eventside that Donald Trumps signed.
40:07
I wasn't really campaigning for Trump. I just did happen. I was
40:10
at a Republican event and didn't happen to be there, and I was just
40:13
happy to be standing there. But I did vote for Trump. Most of
40:15
my friends are Trump supporters, at least, let me say a great number
40:20
of them are. Sadly, a lot of them, in my opinion,
40:23
didn't see the writing on the wall with Trump and said it's time to dump
40:27
this guy. Uh. But you know, as the Texas said, you
40:30
do you, they they do them. I don't think that's correct, yeah
40:35
to say that that way, But anyway, you get the point I'm making.
40:38
The last couple of days, though, I've been really, I guess,
40:43
probably spending a lot of time on this Biden story, and it just
40:46
so happens that on Twitter or on exit things. I haven't chased anybody,
40:52
there are things that just happened to pop up, and I guess I've been
40:54
a little bit bothered. My opinion. My opinion only that many of my
41:01
friends in the Democrat Party locally, nationally, or whatever won't see the writing
41:08
on the wall with President Biden as they should have seen my Republican brothers and
41:15
should have seen with Trump that they need to dump this guy as soon as
41:19
possible, and said, and I said the same thing over I would have
41:22
voted for anyone on that stage except for Ramaswami because he was crazy on the
41:29
Republican stage over Donald Trump. And I have said, I will not vote
41:32
for Donald Trump this time. And I will say and people said, well,
41:37
that means you're voting for Biden. No, I am probably unless something
41:42
major change is not voting for president. I will vote. Don't get me
41:45
wrong, I will vote, but I can't vote for president because I got
41:49
to look at myself in the mirror every day, and I think that when
41:52
you look at Donald Trump my opinion, when you look at Donald Trump and
41:54
when you look at Joe Biden, neither of them are fit to run this
41:59
country at this point. And so that's I hope that, And I really
42:04
do appreciate the TEXTU. I'm sorry that I offended them and they opted not
42:08
to follow me. But it's you know, you're you're you know how social
42:12
media works. You know, you just set down Ryan. I'm trying to
42:15
avoid saying sitting on the toilet. Maybe I shouldn't say that you're sitting down
42:19
at your desk when you probably should be working and you just scroll. And
42:22
those are the things that have a tendency to pop up. And yeah,
42:25
I commented on a few of them. I certainly did when it came to
42:30
Biden. I guess because I just get bothered by people who won't state the
42:36
obvious when it comes to Joe Biden, that it is time for Joe Biden
42:43
to step down, uh and to end this. And I don't think Donald
42:49
Trump should have been there to begin with. So that's just me texta saying
42:58
we know what it needs. That I said, I'm so glad that by
43:00
confirming that you won't vote for Trump or Biden, you have confirmed your support
43:04
for Jill Stein and the Green Party. No, probably not, probably not
43:09
all right? Uh, Texas, Trump is a liberal loser. He's ruining
43:15
the GOP platform. Biden is also a liberal loser. They suck the party,
43:21
suck as a tester. Let's see. Let's go to a phone call.
43:25
Let's see what we got here. Good morning, you're on the air.
43:29
Good morning. How are you today? I am fine? How are
43:30
you, sir? What can I do for you? Well? You know,
43:34
I wanted to point out when we're discussing the Biden and Trump thing,
43:38
I see a problem with all of the media because there's a there's an insane
43:44
amount of focus on Biden's performance during the debate. You know, basically everyone
43:49
knows he has a speech impediment. He's had a stutter his whole life.
43:52
He does have word finding issues. But all these are you know, it's
43:57
what would be termed communication disorders. It's a it's not a problem with his
44:00
cognitive ability. It has a whole lot more to do with his language skills.
44:06
But I don't hear anything whatsoever about Trump's performance during during the debate,
44:14
and the fact that just about every fact checking either side of the fence has
44:19
agreed that during his debate he engaged in at least thirty different lives, everything
44:23
from taxes to wars. You know, anybody who's interested in google Trump debate
44:30
thirty lives and you'll see that. So why is the media focusing on Biden's
44:35
speech IMPEDIMNT so much and completely ignoring the fact that the other candidate has an
44:40
honesty problem. I think Dan if I could jump in here. I think
44:45
when you said that Trump told thirty to thirty five lives, I think you're
44:46
being conservative. I think it was more like sixty or seventy. Well,
44:50
absolutely, but the thirty thirty is a rock solid number that I looked at
44:54
the you know, at the evidence, and there's no question as he lied
44:59
repeat talking about the level of taxes and so on. You know, so
45:02
many people just don't recognize he claims he cut taxes, but you know,
45:06
the tax cuts for the folks like me and you are expiring in twenty twenty
45:10
five, that's coming up fast, six or eight months away. Those will
45:15
expire, and it's all whip service. Of course, his big tax cuts
45:19
for the corporate and the wealthy folks those are those are permanent. No problem
45:22
there. So why don't we get more focused though, on Trump's lives,
45:28
especially if we're going to talk about the debate and Biden's performance. You know,
45:31
for me, when there's two candidates, one of them has trouble finding
45:35
the right word, the other one lies its butt off, you know,
45:38
I mean, there's no real choice there. I'm not going to go with
45:43
the dishonesty. I'm going to go with the guy that's willing to tell the
45:45
truth, no matter how inconvenient or how uncomfortable it makes it. But I
45:49
understand, Tim, I understand exactly what you're saying. However, can't two
45:52
things be right at the same time? I mean, can you honestly you
45:55
know, I don't want to be argumentative, but can you honestly forget about
45:58
Trump? Can can you honestly look at Joe Biden and say, this is
46:04
just he had a cold, This is just he has speech issues, which
46:07
he's had since childhood. I understand that. Can you you honestly think that's
46:10
all it is to him now? To be honest, Well, no,
46:13
he's eighty years old or whatever. I mean. Of course, he's not
46:16
thinking as fast, There's no question about that. But you know, I
46:21
do evidence based decisions, and I look at the evidence of the past four
46:24
years. I think he's doing great. Right now. The stock market is
46:29
hitting record numbers. You know. I listen every day to the market market
46:34
guy you have on their headstick, and every day I hear a new records.
46:38
We're doing great. Unemployment is at some of the lowest levels. It
46:43
ticked up just this light a little bit here recently, but it's at some
46:45
of the lowest levels in forty to fifty years. I look at the infrastructure,
46:50
he got the infrastructure bill passed from Ember when Trump was going to do
46:52
it, yeah, two weeks ago. You know, healthcare, same thing.
46:58
You know, I see so many of my friends in May able to
47:00
afford healthcare. Now, you know, Donald Trump has never released a healthcare
47:05
plan for me. It's as clear as the world. I'm sorry that you
47:09
know that Biden is not as offensive when he speaks publicly. I'm sorry that
47:14
he's not willing to lie and tell people what they want to hear. But
47:19
I think that media needs to do a better job of comparing them head to
47:22
head and instead of talking about Biden's speech impediment. They need to spend about
47:27
equal time on Trump's honesty deficit. All right, Jim, we got to
47:31
leave it there. I'm overdue for break. I appreciate you call it man.

49:58
at WV metro News dot com. Tsition has been submitted to the City of
50:01
Charleston to change the city code for simple possession of cannabis. It's called the
50:06
Sensible Marijuana Ordnance, and it would make penalties as minimal as possible for simple
50:12
possession. Pretty much taking away jail time at court fees for adults arrested in
50:16
the city for cannabis possession. Now they're talking about first time offenders. There
50:21
are two bills, as I understand it, that would help to make the
50:24
change. One would change city code relating to jail time possession, making a
50:30
first offense basically a non jailable offense. The second one with amend code making
50:37
the penalty for misdemeanor marijuana possession the lowest allowed by state law. Now,
50:43
the chairman of the committee, his councilman, Chad Robinson. He's going to
50:45
join us on the show tomorrow to talk about this and this will be taken
50:51
up at the next regular council meeting, which is next Monday. Now,
50:55
the group Charleston can't wait. You remember them, They collected a bunch of
51:01
signatures. Corey Zen, who is a supporter of the ordinance, says they
51:06
have about two thousand or so valid signatures of support. Now, city Charter
51:10
says ballot initiatives allow residents of the city to introduce to the ballot by petition
51:15
an ordinance or amendment, and they need about ten percent equal to the votes
51:21
cast in the municipal election. They got about two thousand of them according to
51:23
them, so they're well over that. So why not put it on the
51:28
ballot. Well, remember, Counselman Robinson wants to work it out through city
51:32
council on so we basically wouldn't go to ballot. It would just be worked
51:37
out as best I understand. Again, we'll talk to counsel with Robinson about
51:39
it tomorrow. It would be worked out basically through council and not go on
51:45
the ballot. And one of the reasons is money. And I can tell
51:49
you from my days in the Secretary of State's office it isn't expensive to pull
51:52
off a special election or to even add something to a regular ballot, So
51:58
it may come down to money. Again. I'll get it in to this
52:00
tomorrow talking to counsel with Robinson. And in case you are wondering if we
52:02
wrap up Aaron Parker great story posts at wv metronews dot com about it.

One hundred and seventy three arrest were made in the city of Charleston last year

52:17
I want to get back into this because it seems to me like an awful
52:20
lot of energy being spent on something that was only the seventh leading cause of

arrest in the city of Charleston last year. All Right, we'll get into
