- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, if you don't know me by now, I'm Burton
- 0:02Speaker 1: Cebell Dry long vocal martyr and currently a solo artist.
- 0:09Speaker 1: I've been part of Fear Factory. I've been part of
- 0:11Speaker 1: j z R. I've been part of City of Fire,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I've been part of Ministry and many other many other
- 0:20Speaker 1: cameos and other bands projects over the years. I'm like
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Troy McClure of heavy metal. Roll Night.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You certainly keep meself busy. Brother, Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:31Speaker 1: My pleasure. Thank you for having me.
- 0:34Speaker 2: My pleasure as well. So we're here for the big
- 0:37Speaker 2: news that you have just announced the run of intimate
- 0:39Speaker 2: Australian shows in June, studying during the eleventh in Brisbane,
- 0:43Speaker 2: then stopping at Newcastle and Sydney over consecutive days and
- 0:46Speaker 2: finishing in Melbourne on during the fourteenth. I know the
- 0:49Speaker 2: news has made a lot of people happy on this
- 0:51Speaker 2: side of the world.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Brother, Well, I certainly hope so doing this tour is
- 0:56Speaker 1: making me very happy. This is something I've been pretty
- 0:59Speaker 1: much striving for for quite some time, and this is
- 1:03Speaker 1: the first actual tour that's going to launch pretty much
- 1:06Speaker 1: launch my next chapter of my career. And I hope
- 1:10Speaker 1: people are happy. I hope people are gonna come and
- 1:14Speaker 1: see it. I'm doing intimate shows on purpose so it
- 1:19Speaker 1: looks good and people come and enjoy it, because this
- 1:23Speaker 1: is you know, the first time I came to Australia
- 1:26Speaker 1: was intimate shows to begin with. So let's go back
- 1:28Speaker 1: to the beginning.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So I wouldn't say intimate shows. It doesn't mean you're
- 1:32Speaker 2: gonna be sitting there and instead of pajamas reading fairy styles,
- 1:35Speaker 2: does it.
- 1:37Speaker 1: No, I'm I'm over the age of ten, so I
- 1:39Speaker 1: did not wear pajamas in public. So no, it's intimate
- 1:44Speaker 1: meaning it's a small venue and I'll be up close
- 1:48Speaker 1: and personal in your face.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I'm very nice. Now, if my research is correct, this
- 1:53Speaker 2: is going to be your first time obe here since
- 1:55Speaker 2: I run a DJ shows in twenty twenty one. So
- 1:58Speaker 2: what's changed in your life since?
- 1:59Speaker 1: I mean just what's changed is that I've been working
- 2:06Speaker 1: on new music. I was in Australia for DJ gig
- 2:11Speaker 1: because my wife was down there working on a film.
- 2:15Speaker 1: So I got to go down like during the pandemic
- 2:18Speaker 1: and spent a few months down there. And while I
- 2:21Speaker 1: was down there, I got to you know, I've already
- 2:24Speaker 1: was comfortable with the people of Frankie's Old Frankies, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: so they made it happen. But ever since then, I've
- 2:31Speaker 1: been just working on new music and as I keep saying,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but the next chapter of my career, and I just
- 2:38Speaker 1: got a new band. I'm very happy about them, and
- 2:42Speaker 1: that's changed and we've put out some new music. By
- 2:46Speaker 1: the time I get to Australia in June, I'll have
- 2:49Speaker 1: released two new singles for people to hear and hopefully
- 2:53Speaker 1: get excited to come see live at the shows in Brisbane, Newcastle,
- 2:58Speaker 1: Sydney and Melbourne.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And speaking of Frankie's, I actually did an interview with
- 3:02Speaker 2: Jordan only a couple of nights ago. He's finally got
- 3:05Speaker 2: himself a new music venture happening in Sydney.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that does not surprise me that as one adventurous man,
- 3:12Speaker 1: and uh I look up to that dude. He's fucking awesome.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Excuse my language, but.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I swear as much as you like, especially when when
- 3:18Speaker 2: describing him, because he is fucking awesome.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Jordan is fucking awesome, and uh, you know, I I
- 3:24Speaker 1: look forward to seeing him again as well as you, my.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Friend sweet as my friend. So what exactly can we
- 3:29Speaker 2: expect from these shows, mate, Like, are you going to
- 3:31Speaker 2: focus on certain periods of your musical history or are
- 3:34Speaker 2: you going to do a widespread.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Well as you know, I have a thirty thirty plus
- 3:40Speaker 1: year career of music, Huh you know, not just Fear Factory,
- 3:46Speaker 1: but other bands. Uh you know, like I said before,
- 3:49Speaker 1: Fear Factory, City of Fire essentially the Watchers, Uh Ministry
- 3:55Speaker 1: geez r. So I am planning what I've been in
- 4:00Speaker 1: the past shows. I've done three shows in the past
- 4:02Speaker 1: few months, and I just I just pick the songs
- 4:06Speaker 1: that fit my narrative of what I'm trying to achieve,
- 4:09Speaker 1: which is heavy, groovy, dark and moody. And so songs
- 4:13Speaker 1: from Fear Factory, song from jeez Are, songs from Essential
- 4:16Speaker 1: to Watchers, songs from City of Fire, and new songs
- 4:20Speaker 1: that I want to present to people. So it's a
- 4:24Speaker 1: whole array of my entire career. It's not just one band.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Speaking of new songs, may like, in the last twelve months,
- 4:31Speaker 2: you've released two solo singles with Anti Droid and Technical Exorcism,
- 4:36Speaker 2: So how would I receive by fans? Why did they
- 4:38Speaker 2: go over as you hoped?
- 4:40Speaker 1: Yeah, don't forget I did a version of Duhast as
- 4:43Speaker 1: well that I did a version of which came out
- 4:46Speaker 1: pretty fucking awesome. Yeah, I've had a great response the
- 4:51Speaker 1: fans live. The fans really like it live. They really
- 4:56Speaker 1: translate live very well. The and that I have gathered,
- 5:01Speaker 1: or should I say curate, because it took me a
- 5:03Speaker 1: couple of years to curate this band and grab these
- 5:05Speaker 1: guys together. I've known for a few years, but finally
- 5:09Speaker 1: I got this band together, and the music that we
- 5:12Speaker 1: play is really translating into a new group that's really
- 5:18Speaker 1: translating these songs in the heavy, groovy, dark and moody ways.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Just it's amazing. So what you hear is going to
- 5:25Speaker 1: be heavier live Wired.
- 5:29Speaker 2: We're around the time of your release of first song,
- 5:31Speaker 2: Antie Droid. You said in an interview that you're only
- 5:33Speaker 2: working on one single at a time with a view
- 5:36Speaker 2: to eventually release in the full album. Are you still
- 5:38Speaker 2: sticking to that.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I am, but I've been recording a lot more new songs,
- 5:44Speaker 1: so releasing one thing at a time, but I am
- 5:47Speaker 1: gonna I do plan to have an actual physical release,
- 5:52Speaker 1: hopefully in the coming year. So we got band and
- 5:56Speaker 1: I we have a few more songs that we're working
- 5:58Speaker 1: on that we're gonna just start working on new stuff. Well,
- 6:02Speaker 1: we're already working on new stuff. But the two new songs,
- 6:07Speaker 1: the first song that you guys going to hear and
- 6:09Speaker 1: probably in another month or so play another month is
- 6:11Speaker 1: a fucking banger. Dude crushes, right, and that one after
- 6:20Speaker 1: that crushes as well. And we're just going to continue
- 6:23Speaker 1: with that mode, just crushing.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, I don't see singles released so far, are
- 6:30Speaker 2: they good sonny representation of what do you expect from
- 6:32Speaker 2: the whole album? Or scratch your surface?
- 6:36Speaker 1: I would say that come to see us live and
- 6:39Speaker 1: that will be a great representation of what you'll expect
- 6:43Speaker 1: from the album, because, like I said, what we do
- 6:47Speaker 1: live is we translate these songs to what we are
- 6:49Speaker 1: doing now, to our version. So even fear factory songs
- 6:54Speaker 1: and GGR songs, they are much more full than when
- 6:59Speaker 1: you come live. It's becoming more of an organic kind
- 7:03Speaker 1: of feeling. It's just heavy. I have you know, it's
- 7:08Speaker 1: me obviously. And then I have two guitar players. They
- 7:12Speaker 1: both trade off doing uh, they both trade off doing
- 7:16Speaker 1: rhythm and lead bass player and drums, and so the
- 7:19Speaker 1: bass player and drummers are just like the to the kitchen,
- 7:22Speaker 1: the whole ling it down. So if you want to
- 7:28Speaker 1: if you want to hear what the album is going
- 7:30Speaker 1: to be like, come see what we do live and
- 7:32Speaker 1: you'll understand and you will not be disappointed.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Now, you touched on this before, but you've been writing
- 7:39Speaker 2: and performing music for more than thirty six years now, mate,
- 7:42Speaker 2: So how do you how do you keep how do
- 7:45Speaker 2: you keep things fresh and exciting for yourself?
- 7:48Speaker 1: Well, I've always considered myself a writer, even before I
- 7:53Speaker 1: was in fear Factory, And what writers do is that
- 7:56Speaker 1: they observe the world around them and I can I
- 8:01Speaker 1: will always do that, and there is in this world,
- 8:05Speaker 1: in this day and age, there's plenty to be inspired by.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And even the new songs are inspired that way, not
- 8:13Speaker 1: just from personal experiences, but from experiences that we are
- 8:17Speaker 1: seeing and living through in the current world. And I,
- 8:22Speaker 1: you know, keeping with my aesthetic of how I write
- 8:27Speaker 1: that I've always written, I am continuing to do that
- 8:31Speaker 1: social commentary of what I see around me in the
- 8:35Speaker 1: world that's happening, and it's just there's a lot going
- 8:38Speaker 1: on and there's a lot to talk about.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Oh yeah, along those lines, my life. Do you think
- 8:44Speaker 2: it gets easier or harder to come up in new
- 8:47Speaker 2: material the longer you're in the game and the more
- 8:49Speaker 2: you write.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I guess it's always been hard trying to you know.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I don't want to be pigeonholing and writing in a
- 9:01Speaker 1: certain way, not just about always writing about robots. Again,
- 9:06Speaker 1: he's writing about It's like no, it's like it's about
- 9:09Speaker 1: it's all about social commentary. And it just gotta keep writing.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And with the with the band that I have now,
- 9:17Speaker 1: fresh ears and fresh musicians that are really eager to
- 9:21Speaker 1: write music for me. So we're all writing together, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: we're writing these songs almost we're writing these songs in
- 9:27Speaker 1: a live environment, which is one of the main focuses
- 9:31Speaker 1: I wanted to do, is create these songs live so
- 9:35Speaker 1: that they translate live. So after thirty six years, it's
- 9:41Speaker 1: just smooth anyway, it's this steady as she goes. It's
- 9:46Speaker 1: it's everything. Nothing's way change. It's just like except nothing's
- 9:51Speaker 1: way change, except I'm just older.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I'd better looking, brother, ha.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Thank you, you're trying to flatter me. It's working.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Earlier this year, you're inducted into the Metal Hall of Bame, like,
- 10:06Speaker 2: was that unexpected or did you know beforehand that you
- 10:08Speaker 2: really get it?
- 10:10Speaker 1: Well, it was unexpected, but they got informed like a
- 10:14Speaker 1: couple of weeks beforehand, so I could, you know, purchase
- 10:18Speaker 1: my travel make my travel plans. But uh, it was
- 10:23Speaker 1: I never expected anything like that. I mean, Forrest and
- 10:26Speaker 1: my rock star dreams. I always thought of some kind
- 10:29Speaker 1: of accolades like that, but never expected to happen. And whoa,
- 10:33Speaker 1: it happened and it was fucking cool, dude, it really was.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I should be getting my award, so the trophy they
- 10:43Speaker 1: had or the award they had, you know, like they
- 10:46Speaker 1: have a ward for a Grammys or for an Oscar,
- 10:49Speaker 1: so they only had one at the ceremonies that everyone
- 10:53Speaker 1: shared to hold up. But I should be getting mine
- 10:57Speaker 1: in the next couple hopefully the next week. But uh man,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I never expected that. What a great honor. And uh,
- 11:05Speaker 1: you know, I'm just grateful to everyone who considered me
- 11:09Speaker 1: and voted for me to make that happen.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And does that sort of open any doors up for
- 11:13Speaker 2: you in the future, like you get free KFC wherever
- 11:16Speaker 2: you go or anything like that, or.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Oh my god, I hope only if I'm recognized by
- 11:23Speaker 3: someone that's fucking bell mate.
- 11:32Speaker 1: If I could get some free pies out of it,
- 11:33Speaker 1: don't good.
- 11:36Speaker 2: You're not coming out here till two in mate, So
- 11:38Speaker 2: there's a few months between now and then. So what
- 11:40Speaker 2: do you got planned in the interim?
- 11:42Speaker 1: Well, I'm working on new music, writing some new words.
- 11:47Speaker 1: My bands were writing new songs as we speak, and uh,
- 11:53Speaker 1: you know, like I said, I got two singles that
- 11:55Speaker 1: are going to be released before I get to Australia,
- 11:58Speaker 1: so check the check them out once. One is called Savages,
- 12:02Speaker 1: which I did play at my last show when we
- 12:06Speaker 1: uh dore a direct support for God Forbid in Los Angeles,
- 12:09Speaker 1: but we we recorded it right after that. And then
- 12:13Speaker 1: there's another song called Cold Lazarus that's gonna be another
- 12:19Speaker 1: It's it's a heavy song. It's gonna be heavy.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Fantastic. Ben, Well, thanks very much for you might have
- 12:24Speaker 2: been an absolute pleasure Speak video. I'll definitely come along
- 12:27Speaker 2: to the Brisbane show. What's so I say?
- 12:29Speaker 1: Said?
- 12:29Speaker 2: I I'll bring you heavy.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Shed along.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Were I were large much ruddy. I'll bring you heavy,
- 12:36Speaker 2: heavy shed along and you can go home and look
- 12:37Speaker 2: in stylish as fuck and put your head on, put
- 12:40Speaker 2: your head on, look in the Mirror and take Fight.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I love and thank you Chris for this. This is
- 12:45Speaker 1: amazing and uh, like I said, I'm super excited to
- 12:48Speaker 1: get back down to Australia and performing again. And uh yeah,
- 12:53Speaker 1: I missed being on stage and I'm gonna be in
- 12:55Speaker 1: my element. I can't wait.
