- 0:00Aloha. Saturday morning in Hawaiʻi. I'm Mele with what's happening today — and what's coming early next week that you need to know about.
- 2:04Today and tomorrow stay breezy with steady trade winds and scattered showers hitting windward areas overnight and early morning. South-facing beaches will see elevated surf through Sunday morning. East-facing shores are rougher right now due to strong winds and swell from Hurricane Fausto approaching from the south. If you're planning beach time this weekend, the calmer spots are on the leeward side, but swell and wind chop are part of the picture.
- 2:27Surf-wise: Oʻahu's south and north shores are running moderate at around 5 feet — comfortable for experienced swimmers, but watch for shore break and rip currents. Maui's running small at 3.8 feet, which is fine for most people. The Big Island is calm at 1.6 feet. Kauaʻi is the outlier at nearly 7 feet — that's expert-only territory this weekend.
- 2:44Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several trail and bridge closures in effect — the Lava Tube Bridge is under replacement, Kīpukapuaulu Trail is closed due to hazardous trees, and the Kahuku Unit roads are closed. Kīlauea remains in eruption, so watch for volcanic ash in the summit area. The park is open, but check conditions before you head out.
- 3:02If you're thinking about a fall trip to Hawaiʻi, our new airfare guide covers the sweet spot after Labor Day when prices drop and stay reasonable through mid-November. The booking window makes a real difference — and there's a cliff to watch out for around Thanksgiving. Full piece is on the site if you're planning ahead.
- 3:18Here's what matters most: Hurricane Fausto is expected to pass near the Big Island on Tuesday and Kauaʻi by Wednesday as a tropical storm. Heavy rain, winds around 40 miles per hour with higher gusts, and dangerous high surf on east-facing shores are the main risks. By Thursday, the system moves away and conditions improve.
