- 0:02Happy Thursday morning, everybody.
- 0:06It's about 7:15 AM and it's already 90° in St.
- 0:12Louis, MO Hotter than a well digger's ass out here.
- 0:16There it is, the legendary. You know, it's funny, I'll call
- 0:21that a gutter. And some people are so bored,
- 0:24they go, that's not a gutter, that's a downspout.
- 0:28I'm like, simmer down. It's just funny, ain't it?
- 0:35All right, So today, children, we going to talk about race cars
- 0:43in NASCAR. Somebody on X was so nice to me.
- 0:49They wrote me this long love letter for everybody to see.
- 0:53And it said, Herman, you're getting too jacked up on Sun
- 0:57Drop about some of these fans not liking the Gen. 7 car.
- 1:05Take it easy on yourself. You're a good guy.
- 1:09I thought that was really nice, but I said no because coffee
- 1:14with Kenny, we always we always stay on the hot topics.
- 1:18We always hit the hot topics. So we're going to ride this
- 1:21horse until it breaks its foot. Y'all want to talk about how bad
- 1:26the Gen. 7 car is? Hell, I've realized.
- 1:30Let's talk about it. I just never thought.
- 1:34I just thought it was stupid. You know, every race this is a
- 1:38bad car. Go to the next race. 3 wide
- 1:42finish. It might have been a three wide
- 1:44finish, but still a bad car. Everybody and their brother says
- 1:51that Kansas was a great race. The car's still bad.
- 1:57I said OK, and it hit me like a ton of bricks.
- 2:02What I'm going to tell you right now is going to shock you all
- 2:06because it shocked me. You know, brother Rusty would
- 2:09say, Herman, you're thinking wrong and I'll be damned.
- 2:13We all have been thinking wrong. So I looked it up and I just
- 2:18went to Google, punched it in, and I said different NASCAR race
- 2:23cars. I forgot exactly what I punched
- 2:25in. So here's the history lesson.
- 2:29Did you know the reason we got here?
- 2:32I'm getting ready to tell you. When NASCAR was invented, they
- 2:38came out with a race car and it was called the Generation 1.
- 2:42So when the NASCAR first race car came out, it was Generation
- 2:46one. Well, you already know where
- 2:48this is going. You know, the Hudson Hornet, all
- 2:51those legendary old cars. And then, you know, years went
- 2:54by, you know, 20 years ago by and then it was Generation 2
- 2:58car, you know, then, then you start out, you know, with the
- 3:01Buick Regal and the Oldsmobile, you know, Buddy Baker's Grey
- 3:06Ghost, you know, and then to this day we got to the
- 3:11Generation 7. So since the invention of
- 3:15NASCAR, the cars have changed for one reason or another.
- 3:21You know, most of it was because the automakers were building new
- 3:25passenger cars on the street. So the thought was, what winds
- 3:32on Sunday sells on Monday. That was the slogan for all of
- 3:36us old people. So here's the part that's going
- 3:41to blow you away. All right, I'm going to act this
- 3:46out 'cause I lived it all, I was part of it.
- 3:49And I'm, I am a fabricator, I am a mechanic.
- 3:52I became a race car driver. Here we go.
- 3:57Hey, we're going to Daytona. Do you have your superspeedway
- 4:01car ready to go? Well, we're getting close.
- 4:07Yeah, but you know, right after Daytona we go to California.
- 4:15Do you have your intermediate car ready to go?
- 4:20Well, we're working really hard on our superspeedway car and we
- 4:25know we got to have our intermediate car ready to go
- 4:28because we leave right after Daytona and we head out to
- 4:31Fontana, CA. Yeah, but what about your short
- 4:37track car? Yeah, we're, we're getting,
- 4:42we're working hard, but you got plenty of time for your Rd.
- 4:47course car. Wow, right.
- 4:55There's the answer, everybody right in front of our face.
- 5:00So for all these years, to create a car good for that
- 5:04racetrack, we made a Daytona Talladega car, superspeedway
- 5:10car. Sleek one was sleeker than your
- 5:17car. We would go to the wind tunnel.
- 5:20Boy, this car's got good balance and no drag.
- 5:24That is our Daytona Talladega car.
- 5:27It goes through the wind and it's balanced.
- 5:31Might have a little lift on the nose, but I can still turn it.
- 5:36OK, let's put some downforce in this baby because you know,
- 5:40we're going to go to Fontana, CA, we're going to Texas.
- 5:45Now this intermediate car, we don't want it to have a whole
- 5:50lot of drag because the tracks mount have more.
- 5:56The fenders have got to be wide because when the corner comes
- 5:58up, we got to turn good. We want some downforce on this
- 6:02car. Now we're going to go to
- 6:06Martinsville. We want the wheel walls cut out
- 6:08real big. We want the chassis way
- 6:11different. We want short little A frames on
- 6:14the right front because we want quick camber game.
- 6:16We want big breaks because we don't want to burn the brakes
- 6:19off. You see where I'm going with
- 6:23this? OK, now we're going to the road
- 6:27courses and we want the chassis offset.
- 6:29We want it, we want it square or we want it a half one way or the
- 6:34other. How many how many right-handed
- 6:37turns are on this road course? How many right hand turns are on
- 6:41this road course? I just explained all the
- 6:44differences. Superspeedway car, intermediate
- 6:49car, short track car, Rd. course car.
- 6:53OK, so you know what happened. This is the part I've told you
- 6:57before. I've already told you this
- 6:59before and I haven't heard much out of it.
- 7:02The NASCAR car owners, the car owners, they went to NASCAR and
- 7:09said save us, we're going broke building all these cars.
- 7:17We got all these cars. We got a superspeedway car.
- 7:19We have an intermediate car. We've got a short track car.
- 7:23We got a road course car. Oh yeah.
- 7:25How many race cars do you guys have?
- 7:28Each team has 15 to 20 cars. What each.
- 7:35So over here, Joe Gibbs, Joey Logano, when he first started,
- 7:42he had 15 to 20 cars. Danny Hamlin had 15 to 20 cars.
- 7:48These teams had so many cars they started storing them in
- 7:51warehouses. Hey, we're getting ready for the
- 7:53road course. Bring the go, go down the road,
- 7:56go into our our our warehouse and get out the road course cars
- 8:01because we don't have enough room for our cars in our race
- 8:04shop. That's how bad it was getting.
- 8:10Therefore the races were OK. Now here's when all the bitching
- 8:14and moaning started. Remember the car when they put
- 8:17the wing on the back of it? Remember the Dale Earnhardt
- 8:21junior interview with Brian France And Dale Junior said,
- 8:26Brian, did it upset you that all the drivers talk so badly of
- 8:30your car? Brian said, yeah, it really
- 8:33pissed me off. So here's the moral of the
- 8:38story. This new, next, this, we call it
- 8:44the Gen. 7. The Gen. 7 car was created by
- 8:49all the NASCAR car owners, Rodger Penske, you know, Jack
- 8:54Roush, Richard Childress. Let's build 1 car to save
- 8:59ourselves. We need one car that we can go
- 9:04from Daytona to Martinsville with and that my friends like
- 9:10Paul Harvey would say. That's the rest of the story.
- 9:20So now I'm hearing that. You know what the rally cry
- 9:26right now is? If we just give this car a
- 9:30little more horsepower, it will run better at Martinsville.
- 9:32The comp, it will be better. Let's try some more horsepower,
- 9:38OK? Have a great day everybody.
