Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What's up, everybody?
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: It's your good friend, Lukie, and I am on with my guy, Adam.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Adam, I always get your last name flipped,
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: and it's partially because I'm dyslexic a little bit,
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: and I don't want to do that because I feel like that happens to you too much.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: So can you noble the 4C or 4C the noble for me?
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: No, I specifically have this habit of putting B-side fighters in front
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: of A-side fighters and flipping things.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Like I read things and then reverse it.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: How are you?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: I'm very good.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So talk to me about Alysses Iglesias.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited about this.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: It's a very, very good fight.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: He's one of my favorites.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: You're there live.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: You're wearing a cool jacket.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm here.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: I'm in my hotel room in Quebec City.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Second time in Quebec City, so a really cool place.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Doesn't feel like I'm in North America, actually.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Feels like Europe here.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: In Quebec City.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: But anyway, yeah,
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Iglesias,
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: everyone who's here,
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: who's watching Iglesias all the time,
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: the commentators and people like that are saying maybe the best they've ever seen.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: And they've all seen the best.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: So yeah, yeah, he's real special.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: I think they're struggling to get the right.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: The right opponents for him, because I don't think Zarin's going to offer much.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't say it's a great fight.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: I think they're just trying to get anyone down the rankings of the IBF.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: I think they've just got to work their way down,
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: because so many people have turned that fight down with Iglesias, the list.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: The list goes on.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: I won't,
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: I won't mention any names,
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: but yeah, he looks, he looks, he's quite big as well for super middleweight.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: So he'll probably do something in a super middleweight and then probably move up
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: and do something a light heavyweight, but he's still quite young.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: He's still in his, in his, in his late twenties.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Really excited to see him tonight.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: What's your expectation?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Like seeing a fighter like this, like what, and how familiar are you with him?
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Very familiar,
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: because he was actually in Germany,
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: and he was actually fighting on Polish shows randomly.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: So everyone knew how good he was.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: And then Eye of the Tiger snapped him up, and they put together a really, really cool stable.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: And he's sort of helping spearhead it, I'd say, with M Billy.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: But I'd say he's their best fighter, and they've got an incredible stable.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: I think they've got one of the best stables in the sport right now.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Well, I wrote a story that came out on The Good Fight today,
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: and it was basically singing the praises of Iglesias.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: But one of the key topics of it,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: not to promote my own story,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: which I don't need to do, is that he basically came out of thin air.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: So I'm curious to get the German perspective of what Iglesias was before he came
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: in March 2024 to Canada, because that's when he appeared on my radar.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: What was the perspective of him before then?
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Well, I did,
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: I did an interview with him on,
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: I think on 5SATW and it talks about, so he defected from Cuba to Germany.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: So he was at the Cologne box cup as an amateur and he was in his hotel room.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: And as the,
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: as he said in the interview,
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: he was just sort of having a,
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: you know, going to the toilet and thought, right, I'm not going back.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And he had an uncle who was already in, already in Germany.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: So he's like a decent amateur, everyone knew who he was, boxed for Cuba.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And then, yeah, he just left the hotel, jumped on a train and stayed in Germany.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: And then he just started going to the gym.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: I think that's quite a difficult immigration.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: And then he linked up with George Bramowski.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: He's one of the most famous trainers in Germany.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: And yeah,
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: and then he started with him,
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: and then he did that bit in Germany and Poland, and then Ai the Tiger came in.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: So that's the story in a nutshell.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: When did you first see him on your radar?
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: When he was fighting in Poland a few years ago.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: You know, when you're looking on BoxRec, and you're saying, oh, who's this guy?
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: What's he doing there?
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: But yeah, a few years ago.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: And is this his first fight with Mark Ramsey?
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: So I didn't know that until I got here.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: So yeah, first fight with Mark Ramsey.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Apparently,
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: him and his German trainer didn't agree on some things,
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: but I have no idea what the story is.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: But I only found that out when I got here a couple of days ago.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: So yeah, interesting.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: I think that's more of an indicator of how good Ramsey is at the moment
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: and how revered he is as a trainer.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: Because they all seem to be ending up being trained by him.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And he's sort of like on an exclusive thing with either Tigers.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: So I think the fighters have got that as an option.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: There's a big chance they're going to try him out as a trainer.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: He's also a boxing genius.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Probably one of the smartest people in all of boxing.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's one or two, isn't he?
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Definitely.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and his record speaks for itself.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: All the fighters he's worked with.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it just continues on.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: Like the fighters at the moment.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: And Billy and Iglesias.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: Specifically, it does worry me because I'd like to see them fight each other.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: And the promoter,
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: Camille Estefan,
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: has said once they've got some belts, he'll put them in against each other.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: So they're struggling to find opponents, especially Iglesias.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: I know Billy's finally got the Canelo fight, but Billy was struggling to get opponents as well.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it'd be nice to see.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: It'd be nice to see that.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: But yeah, obviously, M'Billy's got to fight Canelo, which I think he might win.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: I think he's got a good unedging M'Billy in that one.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I think he's peaking at the moment.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and from what I've heard in the gym, he's not really had any injury.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Sorry, go on.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: The rumblings?
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, from all accounts, he's He's a great trainer.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: He's always working on it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: What do you think of Canelo and Billy?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: The thing is, you can't fall in love with these fighters from 2016 anymore.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: We keep seeing that story like Errol Spence coming back.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: He's done.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Terence Crawford retires.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: I can't think of another guy.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Keith Thurman comes back, 2016 fighter.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: He's basically done.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: He keeps coming back.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: He keeps coming back, but it's like he's basically done, right?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: So there's a part of me that's like, okay,
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Canelo's in that era of the 2016 guys who we fell in love with,
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: but they're probably not top guys anymore.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And I definitely think that Canelo's mentally not in the sport anymore.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: He's mentally retired, but he's doing this because he likes money.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I think that he likes having a purpose with training, but there's definitely...
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: He's not going to push the same way he was pushing in 2018, 2019.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: I don't think he pushes the same way.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: I think he's older.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: He's richer.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: But that being said,
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I think that there is a world where Canelo can have one last great fight
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: because Mbili's going to be right there for him.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: So I think it comes down to...
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: How much Mbili has,
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: how much volume he has,
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: how Canelo responds to it, and really also the counterpunching of Canelo.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Because at some point, I think Canelo's going to land.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And I'm curious to see how those shots land on Mbili and how Mbili takes it.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think the counterpunching thing, I think that's waned.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: A little bit for Canelo recently because he used to be so good at that.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the Eye of the Tiger card.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: What are the fights on this card that you're most excited about seeing?
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Asanu, Dimitri Asanu versus Luis Santana.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: I'm more excited about Asanu.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: I think he's really good.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: I commentated a couple of his fights in Germany and no one really knew who he was.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: And he was sort of just tucked on the undercard.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Not really.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: They weren't really making much of a big deal about him.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: But, yeah,
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: he was one of the easily head and shoulders above all
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: the other fighters I was watching in Germany at the time.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: So, Luka Plantic was actually on that card as well.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: But he hasn't really taken off as much.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: He sort of struggled.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: I know he's had a couple of good fights.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: He fought Martinez, didn't he?
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think he's one of those guys who went from prospect to contender.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: He didn't really take the fight to get to contender.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: He just went good prospect and then jumped to like title eliminator type bout,
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: which is always kind of a hard thing to do.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: He doesn't necessarily live the life.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: As you have to sort of reach that elite level.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: But yeah, yeah, Sanu.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's really good.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: And he spent a year inactive.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And then Eye of the Tiger picked him up.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: A bit like an Iglesias situation.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Sort of just not really doing anything in the doldrums of German boxing.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: And he had a year inactivity.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: But I think it's two years in...
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: A few months since they signed him, and now he's number four with WBC and IBF.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: And then he's fighting a fellow Eye of the Tiger fighter, Luis Santana, who comes to fight.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: He's been knocked down in, I think, two of his last four fights.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, that could be interesting.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: But, yeah, I think it could produce a spectacular performance from a Sanu.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I think it could be quite crazy, you know?
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that's a great fight.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I'm going to say the controversial take here.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Asanu looks like a potential world champion.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Luis Santana has been lucky to win a few fights, in my opinion.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: And he hasn't looked great.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: And this is a step your game up fight for Luis Santana.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: And this is for Asanu.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: If you are who we think you are, you're probably going to look pretty good tonight.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: That's the way I see it.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I spoke to him not yesterday, the day before.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, Thursday, Friday, it's messing up my equilibrium.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: But, yeah, on Tuesday, he seemed on it.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: He seemed well up for it.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, that's really interesting.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Ten rounds, WBC and IBF regional titles on there, continental thingies.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, that really – but, yeah, he's putting a lot – I'm expecting Asano to come up.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: I call that the trade of a real guy where it's like you're taking on guys
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: that are contenders and good fighters and like you're not trying to hold
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: the position.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: You're fine.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Like, okay, this guy's got a good record.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: It's an easy fight to make.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: Whereas like,
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: maybe the guys that we have questions about seem to find themselves
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: in strategically matched fights.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: But that seems to be a thing with Eye of the Tiger Stable.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Apparently Santana snapped out the chance to fire Santana as well.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: So well up for it.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Well up for the, you know, willing to test themselves.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: They're both undefeated.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: 13-0 versus 16-0.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: Really, really good fight.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: And Santana's from Montreal as well.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: So he's fighting in front of, you know, his own people.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's a quality fight.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: And that's like the start of the card, basically.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: There's a couple of prelim fights there, but yeah.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then you've got Katayev against Padraig McCrory.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Is that a one alligator, two alligator fight?
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: You can count alligators before the fight's over?
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: I think it'll be good to see where Ketelle is because he must be feeling
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: a bit unlucky because he should be a world champion at the moment
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: after what happened with Morel.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And then it's kind of gone a bit.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: He's had a couple of fights since,
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: but on You know, not sort of main events or anything like that.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: You would have expected him to, yeah, kind of missed his shot there.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: But yeah, he'll, yeah, I think McCrory will offer something.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: I think this is the thing with him, and let's let Lukie get on the soapbox.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: He was by far and away the most entertaining 2020 Olympian.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Ben Whitaker beats him, but Ben acted like he won the gold medal when he beat him.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: And then he hits the pros,
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: kind of underachieves, and he's had fights where they've been way too close.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: I want to say the majority or a split decision.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: He got dropped in one of...
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like he hasn't differentiated the way you want to see.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: And I think part of that is he's trying to knock everybody out.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: He got dropped in possibly his last fight to Diallo.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was two fights ago.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Kind of things blend together currently.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: And like you said, he has the morale performance.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: But I think the other thing to me is for a fighter of his background,
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: high amateur, it's a little surprising he's as up and down as he is.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: I would expect a more consistent career.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I'd agree with you.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he is inconsistent,
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: but yeah, that's what kind of makes this an okay fight, you know, against McCrory.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: So it depends which Ketelle.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Ketelle's last fight was a bit weird.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: He kind of got dropped, and then the other guy just kind of randomly quit.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: I don't really know the reason for that.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Well, the way he got dropped… Sorry.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I was going to say the way he got dropped is he loaded up and the guy caught him
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: with like a jab.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: So he used his power against him and then it just,
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: he got off the canvas and was like, now I got to beat you up.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: So it was like one of those weird optics things.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: But yeah, we'll see tonight.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: We'll see tonight where he is.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, that,
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: that by all accounts,
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: his management team are, you know, looking at another world title show for him.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: In the next couple of fights.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: So I think he's still pretty well ranked across a few of them.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: So that will be good.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: And then I'll tell you what's a really good fight.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Mateo against Shishkin as well.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: That's a real step up for Wilkins.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: He's still really young.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: So for him to fight Shishkin is another really good fight.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Too big of a jump.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: He looked pretty good against Falcao, but he didn't look great in the early rounds.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: He didn't look terribly good.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it would be fair play for him for jumping up this quickly.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: But, yeah, he's only 21.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: I had to Google that.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: But he's only 21.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that could be difficult.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: That was the one where maybe they're banking on Shishkin having a lot of damage
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: from Iglesias,
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: hard fight with Skull,
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: but it does feel like he's jumping into that contender spot rather quickly for
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: a young guy.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he wants to get stuck in.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, fair play.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: At least 16-0.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Where else?
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: How many more North American-level
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: title fights can he have?
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, that could be...
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know who's going to win that one.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: That could go either way.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: That's going to be a really tough fight.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Shishkin is still a really good fighter, I think.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: He's got...
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Some pretty decent people behind him in boxing.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Is it Sugarhill?
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Is his trainer?
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: I believe so.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: He was here, so he must
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: be, yeah.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: I think Salih is still his promoter,
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: so there must be something left if they're still bothering with him.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, really cool fight.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Really cool fight.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Really cool show.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: I can't wait.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Now let's jump ahead.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Let's do speculative.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure if you want to do any Floyd Schofield, Lucas body.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: I'm excited for that fight, but I feel like nobody in the world cares.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: I feel like it's a really good fight,
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: but it's like two kind of mild-mandered, under-the-radar fighters.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: I forgot what was happening, to be honest.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Genuine consensus.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: It feels like that one's flying under the radar.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: So I wanted to jump into this Fandora fight because I feel like you're going
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: to totally know a lot about Ermal.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: I can't pronounce his last name.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Tell me you know about this guy that's fighting Fandora.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: I know that you knew about him.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: You haven't prompted me on this.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I've commentated a couple of his fights.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: He fought in...
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: I commentated on a fight in Albania.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: In November.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: And I commentated a fight of his on that WBC convention in Hamburg.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: I think he had a fight in between.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it just scoops up all the rounds.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: But no power.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Like zero power.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: Like nothing.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: Like really, really poor power.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Like Tricky Southpaw.
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Well, he's got eight knockouts in 23 wins.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, terrible fight.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: It's a really
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: bad fight.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I was hearing big things in Vegas about Bakari Samak.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: I believe that's how you say his name?
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Samak Day?
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, apparently he's playing good.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: But he beat him.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: But in Germany, yeah,
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: I haven't actually watched that fight, but I do know the people who were there.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: They said there was some...
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: It was a close fight.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: It could have gone either way in politically correct terms.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but... Yeah, I heard it was a little more extreme than what you're saying.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: But yeah, apparently...
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: So yeah, he might have got lucky with that one, but...
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's not great.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: So this isn't a good fight?
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: We can't talk ourselves into this one?
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: No, no.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: It might show how... Because I don't think Fondora is the greatest thing in the world.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Do you?
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: I'm looking at his record now.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: There's just a lot of Tim Tzu and one of Thurman's comebacks.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, this is a really bad fight.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: Well, I think that for me with Fundora,
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: the issue is that he's getting better based on the eye test,
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: but he's fighting fighters outside of Timzu the first time where you favor him.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: So he's improving, but it's like he's fighting guys that you feel like he has advantages over.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Keith Thurman was an interesting fight in theory, but Keith's older.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: He tried to box him.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: I guess for me, I think Fendora could be really good.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: He poses a really big physical frame,
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: but it also feels like we lack that fight against one of those guys.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: The Virgil Ortiz is the drawn boots in as hell.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: I'd take a Josh Kelly at this point.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Just someone that presents something a little bit more and comes with a lot
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: of enthusiasm and belief that they can do something.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And I think the other thing with Fendora is That Brian Mendoza knockout wasn't that long ago.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: So when a guy gets knocked out like that,
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I think in the back of your mind,
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: you're going, has he changed or are these styles more suited to him?
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: And is that still possible?
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: I thought he got lucky against Tazou in the first fight.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: I think it was with the, there was some, there was some head cuts, weren't there?
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Um, uh, and he won the, he won the split decision.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: Um, But yeah, it's a bit similar to how they did it with Deontay Wilder.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: He didn't really fight anyone with the WBC title.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: It was kind of okay-ish names, but there was a lot of crap.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: And then when he finally met someone,
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: finally started fighting people, you know, the results speak for themselves.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think...
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: I think this is where it leads to for Sebastian Vendor as soon as he gets in there
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: with the real elite.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: So if we put him in with any of those names you just mentioned,
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: I don't think it goes very well for him.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Do you?
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: I think there's a world where he's maybe even the best guy,
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: but you got to make those fights soon because I don't think that you can have
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: a guy like this wait a couple of years.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: Like if he were that guy, it has to happen right now.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but yeah, this is such a weird fight.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this guy is Euro level at best.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: So it's going to be a weird main event, basically.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: It's like Fandora is going to come out to some heavy metal and he's just going
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: to walk this guy down and this guy's not going to be able to keep him off.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 24:10SPEAKER_01: Well, he's a bit tricky.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: He's a bit tricky, so he might be able to survive a bit.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: But there's just, there's no substance really to it.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: He's got the Samake fight, but
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: yeah, it's just, it's not a great world title fight, that.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's not very good.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: And then your guy, the Charlo bro, he's out of his fight too.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: He fell off the card.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: What's going on with PBC in general?
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: It's not looking great for them.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Obviously,
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: I'm not over in America,
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: but yeah, it looks like they're hanging in there as a promoter.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: In terms of any promoter not named Matchroom on DAZN,
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: it doesn't feel like anyone's getting enough fight dates from the outside looking
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: in.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, that's not going to help.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: That's not going to build champions, so that's going to affect your stable.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: But yeah, not overly excited with what PBC are producing at the moment, to be honest.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: Well, what about Fabio Wardley, Daniel Dubois, too?
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: See, I just did it again.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: I just showed you what it is.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: I flipped the names because in my brain, I read it, Daniel Dubois versus Fabio Wardley.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: But when I say it, it comes out backwards.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: See, that just shows you how I do that.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: But...
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: This feels too soon to me.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: It feels like Wardley took too much power
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: with his recuperative Wolverine-like recuperative powers.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Are we going to just see Wardley,
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: who's a likable kind of Deontay Wilder-like figure that people got behind,
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: just rush back and maybe his career shortened?
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Or are we going to get a Cinderella story?
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: It's already a Cinderella.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: He's got no amateur background.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: He did white-collar stuff because he liked fighting, I think.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: So he's come up an interesting route.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: But yeah, if he can get it, he might win because he knocked down Dubois early.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: If he can get it done early...
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: It's his.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's when the fights go on a little bit longer, he struggles.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: But even then,
- 26:46SPEAKER_01: he's been losing a lot of his fights until real late and then producing
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: the equaliser.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that's a tough man.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: But yeah, I don't know.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: He took a real pasting, though, in the last one.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: That was verging on difficult to watch.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: Really surprised they let that go because the referees will stop.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Anything in the UK,
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: like any sign if you're going to drop, they're probably going to call the fight.
- 27:15SPEAKER_01: So surprised to see that one continue, to be honest.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: What's your level of excitement on the lukie scale?
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: So the lukie scale is I'm going out to a restaurant, is not excited.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: You're going to go eat at that restaurant that you've been waiting to go to, that new pop-up.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: You're going to go to the Abdullah Mason pop-up shop.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: So one is instead of watching fights, you're going to go to the Abdullah Mason pop-up shop.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: So 10 is bad, yeah?
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Ten is good.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Ten is good.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Ten is good.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Let's explain the Lukie scale even more because this will probably outweigh the question.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Ten is watching my favorite TV show, which is Ted Lasso.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Ten is really good.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: I'm excited.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm not covering it, actually.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I'm pretty excited.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: I can just watch it.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to go for a nine.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: I'm really excited about it.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: It's going to be a really good fight.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Something bad is going to happen.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: It's going to be good.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: I'm really excited.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: A number nine.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: A nine would be...
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: I'd say nine would be like I turn on the TV and Miami Vice the remake is on
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: and we're in one of the classic scenes like the hand grenade scene.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I got to stay there for that.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: So that's a really good feeling, you know?
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: I'm going to get a takeaway and everything.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: I'm going to make a bit of a night of it.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: It's going to be nice.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: So explain, we got 10 more minutes left because I don't pay for Zoom and I'm cheap.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Talk an American fight fan through why this fight's so impactful to you and why it's
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: so exciting from the violence to the implications.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: Well, Wardley and Dubois too.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: It's just good.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: It's good for British boxing.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: Another war title fight
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: against two British guys.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Both of them seem to want to fight anyone.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: You don't really hear of them turning many fights down.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: Dubois has been in there with Usyk twice.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just a good old-fashioned British heavyweight fight,
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: which is a world title fight as well.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: So that makes it even more awesome being a proud British person as well.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: So, yeah.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: There's one thing I wanna talk about, too, in the going out.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: Anthony, I can't ever say his name, what's his name?
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Kekache?
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: Anthony Kikachi, yeah.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: He's a good fighter.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: So he is a world champion,
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: but he also exists mostly in a European level where American fans might not be aware
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: of him, but he's a very good fighter.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Is this fight kind of like an attraction like that where it's
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: a championship level bout,
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: but it also has that regional interest that makes it even bigger of a fight,
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: given also that both guys have knockouts?
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well,
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: I'm not too sure because I don't know how big – I haven't really spoken
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: to any Americans about it until I spoke to you.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: So is no one really paying attention to it over there?
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: I would say outside of me and some credible boxing reporters,
- 31:14SPEAKER_00: I'd say you could find very credible high-profile boxing people that are unaware
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: of this fight happening next week.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: That's how under-the-radar it is.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: I think there's a lot going on, though.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of stuff happening as well.
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's interesting.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: But do you know what?
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Funny thing about America, I don't think boxing's that big in America at the moment.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Because when I got in a taxi to go to Plant C, Pro Box HQ.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Well, not Plant C or near Plant C.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Near the HQ.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: Port Lauderdale or somewhere near there.
- 31:54SPEAKER_01: And...
- 31:55SPEAKER_01: I was talking to the taxi driver, a nice guy, and he didn't know who Oleksandr Usyk was.
- 32:03SPEAKER_01: He was the best heavyweight at the time.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: He had no idea who he was, but he said he liked his boxing.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: But he knew about all the stuff in the 80s and 90s.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: But he didn't know who he was.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: Now, when Usyk fought Dubois, Usyk was like a...
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Household name in the UK.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: He was the,
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: he was the bigger draw than Dubois at Wembley Stadium,
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: but there was big advertising boards with him everywhere.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: So yeah,
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: it's kind of,
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: I think,
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: I think boxing's just much more fashionable in the UK and Europe at
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: the moment compared to America.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: Just think that the American fighters, we don't have enough shows.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: We don't have enough dates.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: And the fighters that maybe could lift the sport up, we're just not quite seeing the fights.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: It's like an Abdullah Mason feels like a rising star.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: And it feels like he needs to get these high-profile fights and make some of those fights.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: And I think that's the excitement for me about Schofield versus Lucas Boddy is
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: the winner of this fight is probably going to do a unification bout.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: And that's really what we need to make stars, in my opinion.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but that's an interesting,
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: that fight as well,
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: no one's really talking about that one in Europe and the UK,
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: you know?
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: So yeah, there's a lot happening at the moment, I think.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: It feels like there's a lot of fights, especially at title level.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: I'd say in the U.S.,
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: people are talking more about speculative fights for
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: the analytics heads like Terrence Crawford versus Ryan Garcia.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: You don't understand how big this would be for the sport.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Floyd versus Ryan Garcia would be so big rather than being like,
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: OK, let's talk about a fight that's happening.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: That's kind of where U.S. boxing is going.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:57SPEAKER_01: But I think I was talking to the obviously, I mean, French, Quebec,
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: French-speaking Canada,
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: and they were saying they've got a good fan base here within boxing,
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: but they're still competing against some really big sports with the ice hockey and
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: the baseball and the American football and stuff, and even MLS.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: So yeah,
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: there's a lot going on in America,
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: but I think Yeah,
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of the best American fighters have been inactive as well.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: They don't fight enough once a year,
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: whereas Wardley and Dubois are going at it just a few months later.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: So everyone in the UK, there's always something going on with them.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: And even when they've been losing, all these heavyweights have been fighting each other.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Even when they've been losing, they've been able to rebound and come back and win a world title.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: Look at Filip Pergovic.
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: He lost by knockout, and now he's the world champion.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: That tricky game plan of his,
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: get beat up for a bunch of rounds, and then, you know, that was tricky.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:15SPEAKER_01: He got a little bit lucky, I think.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Just maybe a smidge.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: Any final thoughts before I let you plug all your socials?
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: I don't see any point in plugging my socials.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: No one really pays any attention.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: Final thoughts?
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just been nice to talk to you, mate, because I haven't seen your face for a while.
- 35:42SPEAKER_01: We actually were on the same platform again.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: We're reunited.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: So that's pretty cool.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're back.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: We're brothers in arms again.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: We were at odds.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: The podcast listeners don't know.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: No, we were never at odds, but it's great.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Adam, you are one of my buddies,
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: and the coolest thing about this podcast Your boxing journey is
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: the great people you work with and you're one of the great people I've worked with.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: And it's just cool to try to continue friendships over time as you move on
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: from different places.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: But we both share a mutual respect for each other.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Like if you say something about a fighter,
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: I always hold it to heart and you are the heartbeat of obscure European boxing.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: Nobody knows obscure European boxing like you.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: I was talking to Corey Erdman, the commentator.
