- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from News Talks Be follow
- 0:12Speaker 1: this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: So it looks like eden Park could be hosting more
- 0:18Speaker 2: events in the future. The government's launching a review into
- 0:21Speaker 2: eden Park's consenting rules to see if they're fit for purpose.
- 0:23Speaker 2: This follows the announcement yesterday of the seventy million dollar
- 0:26Speaker 2: boost to your major artists and sporting events to the country.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Louise Upson is the Minister for Tourists.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Halouise Afternoon, Heather, Now, why launch.
- 0:34Speaker 2: An investigation instead of just changing the rules.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Well, this is a process that's available to us now
- 0:42Speaker 3: because of the recently passed Resource Management Act. So mister
- 0:46Speaker 3: Chris Bishop will lead an investigation to look at the
- 0:48Speaker 3: rules around events at eden Park see if they are
- 0:52Speaker 3: negatively impacting on economic growth. And that's where it gives
- 0:57Speaker 3: us the opportunity to basically investigate the options. They'll be
- 1:02Speaker 3: working with the Council, There'll be consultation with the community
- 1:07Speaker 3: and then Cabinet will make decision in the new year
- 1:10Speaker 3: as changes are required.
- 1:11Speaker 2: What do you reckon is the best outcome here? Would
- 1:13Speaker 2: it be that eden Park is basically able to host
- 1:15Speaker 2: any concerts, any sporting events whenever it wants.
- 1:20Speaker 3: No. Look, the intention here is just to make sure
- 1:22Speaker 3: that there is more flexibility for Eden Park. We do
- 1:26Speaker 3: know that some of the rules that exist at the
- 1:28Speaker 3: moment just create real barriers for us being able to
- 1:32Speaker 3: attract events. So the government is investing seventy million dollars
- 1:37Speaker 3: into events and tourism and we don't want to have
- 1:39Speaker 3: additional barriers in the way for New Zealand's largest event stadium.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I mean so at the moment the rules are twelve
- 1:46Speaker 2: shows per year, twenty five nighttime sporting events per year,
- 1:49Speaker 2: only allowed to go until nine thirty, except for cricket
- 1:52Speaker 2: which can go until ten, and then conferences can't have
- 1:55Speaker 2: any more than two thousand people. Why don't just take
- 1:57Speaker 2: away all those rules and say to Edenpark, you guys
- 1:59Speaker 2: can do whatever you want, make as much money and
- 2:00Speaker 2: have as much fun as you can.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Well, I think it's important that we do this investigation.
- 2:06Speaker 3: There are a range of things that need to be
- 2:08Speaker 3: taken into account, but the end result here is that
- 2:12Speaker 3: we want more flexibility for Eden Park, so when they're
- 2:16Speaker 3: going out to attract bids internationally to then be able
- 2:21Speaker 3: to host them at eden Park, which will be fantastic
- 2:23Speaker 3: for Auckland and New Zealand. We don't want them to
- 2:26Speaker 3: fall at the last hurdle because the international coverage needs
- 2:31Speaker 3: to mean the the game starts at nine point thirty
- 2:35Speaker 3: and seven thirty at night. That's a real issue for
- 2:39Speaker 3: an event that Eden Park are considering at the moment.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Which one.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Well that that would be something for eden Park to
- 2:47Speaker 3: talk about.
- 2:48Speaker 2: No one will know.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Tell us well, if you think about some of the
- 2:53Speaker 3: codes and one of the games that we lost last
- 2:55Speaker 3: weekend something to do with league.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but anyway, hello, if you say if you say
- 3:03Speaker 2: the boys Louise, no one will love it.
- 3:06Speaker 3: They're real problems. Problems and what we want to do.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Totally agree. Listen, thank you so much.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I just want to give them. We want to give
- 3:13Speaker 3: them flexibility. So the whether they are attracting a fantastic
- 3:17Speaker 3: sports event, whether they are hosting an event and an
- 3:21Speaker 3: exhibition that is quite unlike anything we've had in New
- 3:24Speaker 3: Zealand before, whether it's an add on to a convention
- 3:28Speaker 3: that we're hosting at the ends at ICC for three
- 3:30Speaker 3: thousand people and they want to do a dinner off
- 3:33Speaker 3: site and Eden Park makes sense listen. We want to
- 3:36Speaker 3: be able to just get on and do the stuff.
- 3:39Speaker 3: We know we'll have a big, big difference to our economy.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Good stuff, Louise, thanks very much, appreciate it, Louis upson,
- 3:44Speaker 2: Tourism Minister.
