- 0:05Thing if you want. Variety 2 Days of Compassion
- 0:43Radiothon presented by the good folks at the High V and we are
- 0:47here and the phone lines are open.
- 0:50We'd love to hear from It's a. It's a great 'cause it really
- 0:52is. I looked it up.
- 0:54Read about what this organization does here for
- 0:57central Iowans and they don't miss.
- 0:59They really don't. They've helped over 100,000
- 1:03families over the course of a year, over the course of a year
- 1:07not in their history. And 100,000 individual children
- 1:12have been helped each and every year by the good folks here at
- 1:14Variety. And during our show as Trent and
- 1:17I are on until 2 Merchants Bonding Company is going to
- 1:21match every single donation that comes through during our two
- 1:25hour shift. And if you are so inclined, if
- 1:28the spirit moves you to do so, here's the phone number where
- 1:31you can call and make those phone lines ring.
- 1:33It's 515-276-6669. 515-276-6669, online variety, iowa.com.
- 1:44Back slash compassion and there's a Venmo, Trent, and I'll
- 1:48turn over to you for that. So Venmo, it's very simple.
- 1:51Okay. It's it's very simple and
- 1:54anybody that has Venmo knows that.
- 1:55But the one caveat you put in there, so you go to Variety
- 1:58Iowa, that's the site on Venmo where you put in your donation,
- 2:02but you have to put in a phone number.
- 2:04The last four digits are 8097. So if you go to Venmo at Variety
- 2:08Iowa and the last four digits 8097.
- 2:11Or you can call the station as as Connor's back there and I
- 2:14think there's probably others back there and they will relay
- 2:16the phone number to you. It's 515-276-6669, 515-276-6669.
- 2:24All donations during our program will be matched by merchants
- 2:28bonding company. So a really good effort out of
- 2:30merchants and we thank them for the So Trent, let's get into
- 2:33sports. We will get back to the variety
- 2:36children's cherry, which is why we're here both today and
- 2:39tomorrow. But a lot to get to as Seihawk.
- 2:42Now the women they played last night.
- 2:44The men will take the floor tonight, the Hilton Coliseum and
- 2:48it would be banged out again tonight as it was last night.
- 2:51And last night, you know, in the third quarter, I thought, oh,
- 2:53gosh, I was, I was mouthing off that this got chance to be a
- 2:56pretty good basketball game and Iowa State starts to pull away.
- 3:003 at the end of the third quarter was huge, huge.
- 3:03It was a three at the end of the first half that I thought was
- 3:05really big for Iowa as well. But it became a really close
- 3:08basketball game in the 4th. It really did.
- 3:11Iowa State prevails for, what did you say, the second time in
- 3:14the last now 10 years, Yes, that Iowa State has found the win
- 3:17column in the SEI Hawk battle, but a really entertaining night
- 3:20of women's hoops. It really was, you know, that
- 3:22first quarter, it was the pace I think that I would needed to
- 3:24play with. And Iowa State did a really good
- 3:26job of slowing things down in the 2nd and into that third
- 3:29quarter when they started to get a little bit of distance picked
- 3:32up in the fourth quarter. But I think that's kind of the
- 3:35one caveat for the Iowa side is the way those second and third
- 3:37quarters went and they just weren't able to keep the pace
- 3:40up. You have to give credit to Iowa
- 3:41State. I think Jada Williams was
- 3:43tremendous. It's not just the assist
- 3:44numbers, but controlling that pace, getting things slowed
- 3:47down, getting the game more comfortable for them because
- 3:51they weren't going to go win a game.
- 3:52I don't think in the 90s against Iowa, they had to have it the
- 3:55way that it was played there unless they were hitting a ton
- 3:57of three pointers and crooks went off like 45.
- 4:00You know, that's the that's kind of the path there.
- 4:02I thought they did a really good job of that, and Jada Williams
- 4:04was a big part of that. You know, one thing my big take
- 4:07away from this game on both sides is the upside of both of
- 4:12these teams. I agree with you wholeheartedly.
- 4:14Is really, we watched a lot more college basketball here these
- 4:17last couple years and you've watched just recently.
- 4:20I've been watching for longer but regardless of that.
- 4:22Women's college basketball, Yeah.
- 4:23We know that you have to have athletes to compete at the
- 4:27highest level. Unless you have a once in a
- 4:29generation talent, you have to have superior athletes to make
- 4:33that run, to get to a Sweet 16, to get to a Lead 8 and
- 4:36eventually get to a Final Four. You have to have high level
- 4:39athletes. And both these teams have those
- 4:41type of players, have the kind of people that can compete, that
- 4:44can go up against the behemoths of the sport, the Uconns, the
- 4:47South Carolinas, the UCLA, those kind of teams.
- 4:51These teams now are there where you remember Mega Gustans, and I
- 4:55think that was kind of your first, dipping your toe into the
- 4:57women's game. Greatest women's basketball
- 4:59player for a year. And you saw, though, when they
- 5:03ran into Baylor in that Elite Eight, it was just it was
- 5:06varsity against. You it was.
- 5:08It was varsity against 6th graders.
- 5:09I mean, it just that gap was so significant and we know how
- 5:12significant that gap is when the highest ends a basketball.
- 5:16And it's not that I'm anticipating that either.
- 5:18These teams are going to be Final Four teams, but they can
- 5:21get there. Get to a second weekend.
- 5:22Absolutely. And they with the right path,
- 5:25with the right match up, there is a real possibility.
- 5:28Let's be frank, outside of Caitlin Clark, that wasn't
- 5:31happening for the last 25 years in Iowa.
- 5:33Outside of no, not outside. Bill Finley's team has never had
- 5:37a team that has this kind of upside.
- 5:38No. It's it's it's I think they're
- 5:40looking for a Sweet 16 run before Finley calls it a career,
- 5:44which, you know, the way he's going.
- 5:45Who knows when's that gonna happen?
- 5:46Well, I kind of have an idea with Addie Brown and Addie
- 5:49Crooks. This is their junior year.
- 5:51Well, that that let's we're way ahead of ourselves on that one.
- 5:54But phenomenal game last night. Really enjoyed.
- 5:56I thought two things and one maybe in particular, more so, I
- 5:59thought Harris Block was just phenomenal, right?
- 6:02She got McCabe 2 1/2 minutes or so left in the basketball game.
- 6:06I thought that was critical. And Jackson for I would say
- 6:09chitchat, right, was unbelievable.
- 6:10She LED all scorers in the first half of that game.
- 6:14And then Jackson kind of took over and she, I don't want to
- 6:17say shut her down, but limited her as opposed to what 'cause
- 6:22she was getting whatever she wanted in the 1st house.
- 6:24She was it got. She's act of a player, she
- 6:26really is. Did you imagine if she was 5
- 6:28foot 8? No would.
- 6:29Not be something, yeah. She's not shy about shooting,
- 6:31no. She's not shy about anything.
- 6:33No, absolutely. She is a different kind of point
- 6:35guard than I was used to, but she is fun to watch.
- 6:37We talked about Jane Williams and that kind of coupled with
- 6:40what I mentioned earlier when he got those type of point guards,
- 6:43difference makers at that spot, just how good that team is.
- 6:46And you mentioned the defense for Iowa State and the way they
- 6:49ratcheted that up and they did it in a myriad of different
- 6:51ways. I thought you saw so many good
- 6:53things. And one thing, watching Audie
- 6:55Crooks for the first time for a full 40 minutes, watching her
- 6:58the full way through, Boy, she has added even more to her game.
- 7:01It's her footwork, I think. Yes, absolutely.
- 7:03I think it is. Boy, when she hit her head, I
- 7:06thought, oh, boy. Yeah.
- 7:08But stayed in the game and then thankfully, no, no, no issue
- 7:12there. Yeah, Fairbach was good.
- 7:15I mean, I I was thoroughly impressed with both of these
- 7:17teams. Yesterday, you know, Fairbach,
- 7:19she's a little bit limited offensively and she's not a
- 7:22great shooter. She's an OK shooter.
- 7:23She's a good on ball defender. Yeah, you do wonder, and
- 7:27certainly when Iowa gets Emily Rodgers.
- 7:28I think she's a smart player. Oh, absolutely, yeah.
- 7:31I mean, she's been around for six years.
- 7:32So yeah, you'd hope you got a little bit of that when you get
- 7:36Emily Rodriguez back. She is the kind of player now
- 7:39she plays out of control. I mentioned that tournament down
- 7:42in Florida. They're getting ready to put
- 7:44that game away against Baylor and two different times she's
- 7:46doing double spin moves and throwing the ball away and just
- 7:49out of control. She needs to learn how to play
- 7:52now on a good team because that wasn't the case.
- 7:54She could kind of do whatever she wanted at UCF last year.
- 7:56Now she's dealing with her injury at this point.
- 7:59But when they get her there, because she's another player, I
- 8:02think that can add to this team because there aren't a ton of
- 8:05players that can get their own. Chitchat can get her own.
- 8:08Who else on this team, though that can do that?
- 8:10McCabe's not that player. Fear Box, not that player.
- 8:13Obviously you got to get it inside to get the ball to hide.
- 8:15And so she's not that type of player.
- 8:17Stolke's the same way. I mean, they don't have those
- 8:20offensive parts that can go and get their own.
- 8:22Ebly Rodriguez can do that. I want to talk about the upside.
- 8:25I think that's another piece. There's still a lot of work to
- 8:27be done, a lot of bad habits that she needs to break when she
- 8:30gets healthy. Journey, Houston, she's got a
- 8:33spot with this team. She's a rotational piece and I
- 8:35think her upside too are coupled with what we've seen.
- 8:38It's really good. Iowa State is great for I would
- 8:41have come back though I think said a lot about them too, to
- 8:44come back down 17, everything going again.
- 8:46Did they get inside three? I don't think they did.
- 8:48They had opportunities, had opportunities.
- 8:51They got the ball back twice. Twice and opportunities couldn't
- 8:55get to fall to get that game within one or to tie it on a
- 8:58three. But they couldn't do it.
- 9:00Look, Iowa State, if they could make their free throws down the
- 9:02stretch this game, probably not as close as it turned out to be.
- 9:06They missed a bunch of free throws.
- 9:07Neither team shot the ball well. Neither team.
- 9:09You're 1000% right. What fun game now on?
- 9:14Williams missing those two. She was what, 20?
- 9:16Was it 26 out of 27? 6 out of 27, yes.
- 9:19I mean, I think I'm thinking, why would you say that, Ryan?
- 9:22How do you say his name? Rococo.
- 9:23Rococo. You know who's coming?
- 9:26It's the old announcer Jinx. But for her to miss them both
- 9:29after she started. But you've been 96.4 percent, 26
- 9:33out of 27 and then missed them both.
- 9:35You just didn't see that coming. And those are two big free
- 9:38throws. At least it felt like that at
- 9:39the time. But hell of an entertaining
- 9:41basketball game last night really was.
- 9:43The A-Team was in town to call the game big.
- 9:46ESPN had the game. I guess a lot.
- 9:48I'm guessing a lot of people saw that game last night.
- 9:51You would think so. I mean, there wasn't a whole lot
- 9:52up against it. No, there really wasn't.
- 9:54No, some some Big 10 games that turned into blowouts.
- 9:57Yeah, and how about Nebraska, by the way?
- 10:00What happened? I didn't see it.
- 10:01They. Throttled, Throttled Wisconsin.
- 10:03That was they. Did, yeah.
- 10:06It was 20. 5.30 Who had that big 10 network?
- 10:10I think so, yeah. I didn't realize so hybrids got
- 10:13a squad. I don't know, it was a home win.
- 10:16Well, look, Greg McDermott was, I heard his post game press
- 10:20conference when Nebraska beat Creighton over the weekend.
- 10:23You know, the first player he mentioned and I don't think it's
- 10:25because he's known him all of his life, well all of Sam's
- 10:27life. He mentioned Sam Hoybrick and
- 10:29just what how important he is to this Huskers outfit.
- 10:32We'll see as well. Good to good to know, but I did
- 10:35not see that last. Night What are the few
- 10:36undefeateds left in college? Basketball that. 90 to 60, the
- 10:40final over Buck. 90 to 6090 to 60 and we both thought Wisconsin
- 10:44was the middle of the pack Big 10 team team with the Jazz.
- 10:47NCAA Tournament team, yes, and it's not a game where Nebraska
- 10:50just shot lights out. They shot 11 and 30 from the
- 10:53three-point line, but absolutely put it to them.
- 10:56So 10 and O now for Hoiberg's group.
- 10:59Can they win their first ever NCAA Tournament?
- 11:01Game. Well, it'll be nice.
- 11:02We'll we'll see. Let's let's talk about the men's
- 11:05game tonight. The numbers 10 1/2 eleven as
- 11:08what? That was the point spread where
- 11:10it landed when we went on the air.
- 11:12I haven't checked it in the last 10 minutes, but I'm sure that
- 11:14hasn't changed that much. And if you were looking for that
- 11:16number, you can still get it somewhere.
- 11:18What do you anticipate tonight? I mean, as we said before the
- 11:21Michigan State game, and we're going to probably say this a lot
- 11:23before Iowa games, if your limit starts, right?
- 11:27If your limit starts, I was not able to do what they like to do.
- 11:31We know that Iowa State's going to play some defense.
- 11:33They're going to look if if you and I know what the game plans
- 11:36going to be, I've got a pretty good idea.
- 11:38TJ and his staff are loaded for bear.
- 11:40What do you anticipate tonight? It's difficult to envision,
- 11:44after what we saw in East Lansing, anything much different
- 11:47than that. I mean, we need some kind of
- 11:49proof of concept against a team like this on the road that
- 11:52they're going to be able to do it.
- 11:54Nobody else stepped up and starts at that early three.
- 11:56He was bad for his standards. He was bad against Michigan
- 11:59State and nobody else could help him out.
- 12:01And we know that this team lacks secondary scoring.
- 12:05Cooper Koch. He can knock down an open.
- 12:06Three, he needs to. Fool Garris.
- 12:08He's kind of hit the skids here the last.
- 12:10Three games or so. You know who is better against
- 12:12Maryland? I thought Tate Sage had a decent
- 12:14game. He's athletic.
- 12:15Isn't he? Yes, he is.
- 12:16He's got some. I noticed him, maybe for the
- 12:18first time, as a hawk. Yeah, against.
- 12:20Maryland, they like what he does on the defensive end.
- 12:23I still go back. If there was ever a time right
- 12:26in Hassan, you remember the game.
- 12:27What are we waiting? For this, he was injured during
- 12:30the summer. All right, late getting healthy.
- 12:33Maybe he's got a couple extra L BS that he needed to lose and
- 12:36get into playing shape. All right, The middle of
- 12:39December. Yep.
- 12:39I mean, the time is now. And after the performance he had
- 12:42a year ago in Hilton, they went to against Michigan State and he
- 12:46played well, you're right. And that game in Hilton?
- 12:48Yeah, he really was. In that game, yeah, he's done it
- 12:51in this building. He's a veteran.
- 12:53You need scoring. You're going to have to put
- 12:55points up here. I don't think you think you can
- 12:57grind out certainly the way this Iowa State team's shooting the
- 12:59ball, you can't grind out a 61 to 50 a win.
- 13:02You're going to have to get points up there.
- 13:04And because of that, I think that this needs to be the time.
- 13:07And if it doesn't happen, look, he didn't play against Maryland.
- 13:09That's weird. And I heard somebody mention
- 13:13might have been Tom Cacard on his podcast that overheard him
- 13:18saying to his girlfriend after the game, it's first time since
- 13:21middle school I didn't play in. A game no.
- 13:23I'm think about it. Yeah, yeah, you're in the Big 12
- 13:27now. You're in the Big 10.
- 13:29You're probably even the best player on your team, on every
- 13:32team you've been on or one of them, certainly till you got to
- 13:35this level. And for him not to see the
- 13:37flats, that is a rare. He's not a plus defender.
- 13:39I I get that. But but he's a shooter.
- 13:41Did he look out of sorts, though, against Michigan State?
- 13:44Did he look like, Oh yeah, you can see that's the black hole?
- 13:46Defensive over there, No. He worked I It's befuddling.
- 13:50It's one of the more confusing components because probably
- 13:54after Sturtz and fool Garris who also isn't starting, we had
- 13:59Brendan Hassan getting minimum of 2010.
- 14:02And McCullum went out of his way to to praise him after the game
- 14:05against Maryland when he didn't play.
- 14:07So we'll see. He's I, I wouldn't just, well, I
- 14:11would have thought he would have played against Maryland.
- 14:12So, So what? What do we know?
- 14:15It's going to be a fun game, fun atmosphere. 7:00 tip, You can
- 14:19listen to the Hot Guy broadcast on News Radio 1040, WHO if you
- 14:22can't be in front of your TV or likewise with the Iowa State
- 14:25broadcast 100.3, the bus on the Cyclone Radio Network.
- 14:30John and Eric will have the call of that one.
- 14:32So Jimmy Rogers comes out at halftime tonight.
- 14:36Yes, absolutely, don't you think?
- 14:37Oh yeah, I think. Has that been announced?
- 14:39No, I don't think it's just. Yeah, I would anticipate
- 14:42because. I've heard that from a bunch of.
- 14:43Different have you? And and he could absolutely blow
- 14:47the roof off Hilton if he does one, if it goes one step further
- 14:51right where he where Jimmy Rogers after he greets the
- 14:53crowns, gets them all fired up, blah, blah, blah.
- 14:56Let me introduce you to our starting quarterback.
- 14:59Oh. Right.
- 15:01You saw Rod Michael last night. Apparently he was mobbed by and
- 15:06then not. Not mobbed in a bad way, sure,
- 15:08but Cyclone fans were, you know, give me a picture.
- 15:10Everybody's got a phone on their camera type of thing.
- 15:12And, and Bramer was there and Bacon was there and Rocco was
- 15:15there. But I'm not saying that would
- 15:19heal the wound, but that would go a long way.
- 15:22So I want to take you back to two years ago.
- 15:25You remember Curtin Signetti? Yeah.
- 15:27And when he was introduced at the end of the game?
- 15:30Yep. And he's called out Ohio State,
- 15:33called out Michigan. And I think we said it.
- 15:36What is this idiot doing? You know it's.
- 15:38What else What he's doing. It's one thing to call him.
- 15:40It's one thing to call out Purdue.
- 15:41It's. Another thing to back him up.
- 15:43That's a great point. And he didn't he he called out
- 15:45the heavy heads. Is Jimmy Rogers got something
- 15:47like that? We'll see.
- 15:49Does he? It's not just it's a cyclone
- 15:51state. Get the applause.
- 15:54Is there going to be a little something extra for whoever's
- 15:58covering the game in the media? Make sure you got your camera
- 16:00out, because I'm going to guess the TV broadcast.
- 16:03Well, maybe just Oh. Sure, Yeah, they'll be.
- 16:05They'll be whoever's anchoring the studio at halftime for that.
- 16:07Go live. Let's let's see that thing.
- 16:09I want to see the whole thing and see if there's a little bit
- 16:12extra because Signeti got a little run and maybe it's not
- 16:15going to be the same because it's one thing calling out Iowa,
- 16:18right? But compared to calling out
- 16:20Michigan and Ohio State when you're in Indiana, the losingest
- 16:22program at FBS at the time. Didn't take long.
- 16:24We did it. Speaking of Big 10 teams, this
- 16:27Sharon Moore story, just unbelievable, right?
- 16:29It truly is the layers of this story and how many of them
- 16:33potentially that there are. And this he snapped, Trent, he
- 16:37snapped. He went off the deep end and
- 16:39went off the deep end quickly as his world was crumbling around
- 16:42him to nobody's fault but his own, right?
- 16:45Let's make that very clear. But you know, this was rumoured
- 16:50on. Somebody had this like a
- 16:51Thanksgiving that this is coming.
- 16:55Josh Pate apparently put something out that there's, I
- 16:58mean, he was kind of he didn't, he didn't mention Michigan, but
- 17:01there were people. Was it Deadspin maybe or one of
- 17:04those that actually said that this is happening, Sharon Moore
- 17:08is having an affair with one of his staff members and he's going
- 17:13to be fired because of it. And then 9 days late, 10 days
- 17:17later, boom, here we are. And my God for him to get.
- 17:21So the staff gets called into a meeting with the athletic
- 17:23department, his whole staff except him.
- 17:26He gets wind of this and realized that his writing is on
- 17:30the wall. And he then, I guess, went over
- 17:32to his mistress's apartment and it just went downhill from
- 17:36there. Absolutely.
- 17:38One of the more wild, crazy 3-4 hours it goes from Tromor's
- 17:42fired sounds like indiscretion. And then he's in jail and the
- 17:48stories that were coming out about that.
- 17:50And how much of this is reporting?
- 17:52How much is this real? Who knows, But this comes from
- 17:55ROM Reinhardt. The details of it.
- 17:58During an argument with his wife, Moore threatened to kill
- 18:00himself. He then drove to and broke into
- 18:03the home of his assistant, where he held a knife to his own
- 18:06throat and threatened to kill both himself and the staffer.
- 18:09He was then intercepted at a local church after his wife
- 18:12provided his phone's location to the authorities.
- 18:15He's now in protective custody. That is from Rob Reinhart.
- 18:19I you run out of ways to describe just how wild we think.
- 18:24You'll never coach again. No.
- 18:27He'll never coach again. No should he?
- 18:28He was the no. He was the head coach of
- 18:30Michigan. You want this person in front of
- 18:32young people. No, absolutely not.
- 18:34You want this person after that, no around people.
- 18:38He had the job of his life. And if he saved that $12 million
- 18:41he made these last two years? Yeah, true.
- 18:44Unbelievable. Well, that's where it's at and
- 18:46we'll follow that for more details.
- 18:50Let's get to I believe Cindy Culbertson is with us.
- 18:53Cindy, can you hear us? My name is Ken Miller.
- 18:55My partner is Trent Condon. Cindy, can you hear us?
- 18:59I can thank you. Good to talk to you.
- 19:02Appreciate you calling in. Obviously, you're calling in on
- 19:04behalf of your granddaughter Lakeland, who has been a better
- 19:09factor, your whole family been a better factor of the good folks
- 19:12here at Variety Children's Charity.
- 19:15So I guess let's start with, you know, how your granddaughter,
- 19:18how Lakeland's doing, if you don't mind sharing that
- 19:20information. And then we'd like to get into
- 19:22just how Variety Club has impacted your family and how
- 19:25they impact so many families throughout Central Iowa.
- 19:30Absolutely. Yes.
- 19:31My granddaughter, Lakeland, she's actually going to be a
- 19:34year tomorrow. Tomorrow is her birthday.
- 19:37Lakeland was diagnosed. Thank you.
- 19:40Lakeland was diagnosed with a ultra rare terminal condition
- 19:45with a life expectancy of one to five years.
- 19:49It's called RCDP and it's a terminal form of dwarfism.
- 19:55And they're they only have less than 100 documented cases in the
- 20:00entire world ever. They think she's roughly about
- 20:0471, like the 71 case ever. Lakeland will never walk, she'll
- 20:10never talk. She's blind, she's deaf with
- 20:14seizures. She's constantly in and out of
- 20:17the hospital. She just had a permanent feeding
- 20:20tube inserted into her belly at the University of Iowa where she
- 20:24gets all her care and but right now she's doing well.
- 20:30I don't want to jinx it, but like I said, her birthday is
- 20:32tomorrow like expectancy of one to five years and she she's
- 20:37doing well. I'd love to hear that, Cindy, no
- 20:41doubt about it. We're here with variety and one
- 20:43of the things I absolutely love about this organization is the
- 20:46Compassion Fund, what they do for families, and most
- 20:50importantly, that direct but immediate support.
- 20:54There's so many times we talk to people.
- 20:56Red tape. Yes, absolutely.
- 20:57Trying to get those funds and do it while families are really
- 21:00struggling. Cindy, you can tell us just how
- 21:02quickly that came together and how important that was for your
- 21:05family. I sent an e-mail because I
- 21:09wasn't sure how the process worked, and I sent an e-mail and
- 21:14within two days, the variety dropped off the gift card for my
- 21:19daughter. The gift card was given to
- 21:23Sierra, My daughter, she's a single mom.
- 21:25She had to, for the first three months, she had to resign from
- 21:30her job to care for Lakeland and the NICU.
- 21:33And like you'd mentioned, the best thing about it, it was
- 21:36quick. There was no red tape.
- 21:37My daughter, I got the card to my daughter.
- 21:39She used it for gas. She lives in Altoona and food
- 21:44and supplies for Lakeland that say the insurance doesn't cover
- 21:48and it was quick, it was painless.
- 21:51And I do have to say from my perspective, there's not a lot
- 21:55of organizations that are direct and quick like the variety.
- 21:59That's why I always want to give back, give my time and and and
- 22:03hopefully raise as much money. And the other thing I want to
- 22:06say, I never thought this would happen to me.
- 22:09It happens to other people, happens to your neighbors, your
- 22:12coworkers. I have healthy grandkids.
- 22:15If this was just an ultra rare condition and I never thought I
- 22:20would have a terminal child with our granddaughter with dwarfism.
- 22:24So you don't think it's ever going to happen to you, but it
- 22:27did to me and my family and my daughter.
- 22:29Again, she's single, single mom taking care of three kids.
- 22:33And this gift card was a huge help to her and, and she's just
- 22:39so thankful for Variety for reaching out so quickly to her.
- 22:45Cindy, we appreciate you sharing your story, very personal story
- 22:49of what your family is going through.
- 22:51As you said, you never think it's going to happen to you,
- 22:54right? It happens to some other people,
- 22:56but then it does and it's grateful that you were able to
- 22:59get in touch with Variety and they responded as quickly as
- 23:02they do local of the helping over 100,000 children each and
- 23:08every year. Cindy, on behalf of us here at
- 23:11Variety and of course the I heart stations WHO and KX and O
- 23:16happy 1st birthday to Lakeland. Cindy.
- 23:18Happy holidays to you and your family and we're certainly
- 23:21hoping for all of the best. All right.
- 23:23Thank you, Cindy for coming on and sharing your story.
- 23:27Thank you so much. Good to talk to you.
- 23:30Thank you very much. Wow.
- 23:31Bye, bye, that tugs that you're right, Jesus.
- 23:35Unthinkable. It's unfathomable, It truly is.
- 23:38And you can help out these families, these people with
- 23:41variety. I'll give them a call right now
- 23:43as the phone lines are open 515-276-6669, 276-6669.
- 23:51You can also donate online Variety iowa.com/compassion or
- 23:55on Venmo at Variety Iowa. There make sure you hit the last

- 24:03merchants bonding company is matching all the donations
- 24:07during Miller and Condon. So the time is now to jump
- 24:09aboard one more time. The phone number 515-276-6669.
- 24:15All right, we are live on the lower level at Jordan Creek Mall
- 24:18where it's center court will be here until 2.
- 24:21The boys come off the bench at that time until 6:00 as we move
- 24:25on and continue here with Variety 2 Days of Compassion
- 24:28Radiothon presented by the good folks at the Hyvee.
- 24:31All the local programs today and tomorrow will be at Jordan
- 24:35Creek. We'll come back.
- 24:36We'll get back into into the sports world.
- 24:39Bill Bender covers college football, will get his take on
- 24:42Sharon Moore as well as the College Football Playoff.
- 24:45Miller and Condon live at Jordan Creek Mall at the Variety 2 Days
- 24:49of Compassion Radiothon. You're listening to the Iowa
- 24:51Sports Radio Network. Hi Millory cod and welcome back.
- 25:08We broadcast live from the Jordan Creek Town Center.
- 25:11It is the variety children's charity, the variety 2 gay days
- 25:15of compassion Radiothon presented by Hy Vee.
- 25:18Let's get to Bill Bendry covers college football amongst other
- 25:21things. sportingnews.com sportingnews.com for Bill Bill
- 25:26Trenton Kent. Thank you for coming on.
- 25:27Appreciate there'll be a little bit of a delay as we are on
- 25:30location here the this afternoon.
- 25:33I thought we'd come on and talk about the College Football
- 25:35Playoff. I'm assuming we'll get there at
- 25:37some point, but boy, oh boy, the news about, so just before 5:00
- 25:42yesterday, the Michigan news, Sharon Moore, that hit like a
- 25:46ton of bricks. Bill Bender, how are you?
- 25:49Busy. Yeah, definitely been busy the
- 25:51last couple days and with with good reason.
- 25:54You know, we we've got to the playoffs and go right into a
- 25:57playoff into a major scandal that, you know, they're going to
- 26:00shake up Michigan and the Big 10.
- 26:02And no, I'm not going to speculate on the Sharon Moore
- 26:05detainment and where that leads. I mean, it's obviously not a fun
- 26:09story for that family. But as far as the football
- 26:12program goes, it just turns into they better fire, better hire
- 26:17and find the right guy for the next.
- 26:19You know, because we saw what happened when they let go of
- 26:22Lloyd Carr. Yeah, give us a couple of names,
- 26:26Bill. Any names that come to the top
- 26:28of mind for you? Man, two home run swings to me
- 26:31are Caitlin de Boer and Brian Kelly.
- 26:35Brian Kelly, you know, people make fun of him all they want,
- 26:38but he's run two major programs. He's won a lot of football
- 26:40games. He'd be an ideal candidate here.
- 26:43It'd be kind of funny to see a, you know, how Notre Dame fans
- 26:46would react to that. And then Caitlin de Boer, if
- 26:49they can get him, I think that's the best fit, the best hire, the
- 26:51best move. They should have hired him two
- 26:53years ago after the championship game.
- 26:56And you know, that would have been an easy one.
- 26:57Then you get into not one of those guys it, it could be Jed
- 27:02Fish, Dan Mullen, PJ Fleck, you know, that kind of tier of
- 27:06candidate, honestly. And the guy that would have been
- 27:09perfect just got hired by Penn State.
- 27:12You. Know and that was one that we
- 27:15always heard here in the state of Iowa that Matt Campbell, one
- 27:18of the jobs that he certainly would be entertaining, certainly
- 27:21would be that Michigan job. Taking that a step further, is
- 27:25there anything else from the mission Michigan perspective
- 27:28that's going to come out of this?
- 27:29Obviously the tumult of Conor Stallions and what happened
- 27:31there. Now you got this part of that.
- 27:33I mean, you talk about lack of institutional control.
- 27:36Boy, it feels like there's a whole lot of lack of things and,
- 27:38and maybe that goes hand in hand with Ward Manuel, the athletic
- 27:40director. Yeah, I think he's going to.
- 27:43I don't think you can penalize an NCA program for having a
- 27:47inappropriate relationship. I don't think, I don't know.
- 27:50Maybe there is something in the bylaws.
- 27:52I don't know. But I mean, it's obviously just
- 27:55another black eye for the program's reputation.
- 27:57And then whoever they hire is going to face that challenge,
- 28:02restoring A reputation. I mean, the three of us grew up
- 28:05with that program and, you know, they had that reputation of
- 28:08being above board and leaders invest and all that stuff.
- 28:11And, you know, now it just looks like they sold their soul for a
- 28:14national championship. And that's something they're
- 28:15going to have to contend with probably for the foreseeable
- 28:19future. Let's go back to last Sunday.
- 28:22Bill Bennett from the Sporting News is joining us.
- 28:24Bill, obviously when Notre Dame was left off, that was probably
- 28:28the big story. What did this come down to a
- 28:31Miami Notre Dame or was this more but maybe so Alabama Notre
- 28:35Dame connection that Alabama got in did not get punished.
- 28:38BYU did for losing in their game.
- 28:42Should the arrows be pointed, maybe more so at Alabama than
- 28:44they are being at the at Miami getting in?
- 28:48That's what I think. I mean, to me, the debate was
- 28:51Alabama and Miami. Like I didn't fathom Notre Dame
- 28:55being left out. And I understand all the
- 28:57mechanics of how they can justify that.
- 28:59But it's just, I mean, you can't tell me objectively, I've been
- 29:03saying this all week that Alabama, they played better than
- 29:07Notre Dame in the last month of the season.
- 29:09If those two teams head to head, I would be picking Notre Dame to
- 29:12win that game, you know, But they took the path of let's
- 29:15protect the conference championship games.
- 29:18Something was going to be sacrificed, whether it was head
- 29:21to head conference championship game value or the idea of the
- 29:26Irish, you know, being maybe the best team of the three.
- 29:32I test all that stuff and they chose Notre Dame.
- 29:35And I just don't, you know, I'm not like mad about it.
- 29:38I just, I just don't understand why you would tease Notre Dame
- 29:41and and have them ranked ahead of Miami by that much and then
- 29:45switch it around on the following Sunday when the data
- 29:48point that actually helped Notre Dame, in my opinion, and it's a
- 29:50weird one, but Boise State won the Mountain West Conference
- 29:54championship. That was the only result that
- 29:55directly impacted those two. But we're also told the
- 30:00conference championship games don't matter unless you win
- 30:03them. It just it's on and on and on.
- 30:06It's time. I've been saying it since it
- 30:07started. The stupid TV show needs to go
- 30:09away. Is it going to go away?
- 30:10I know ESPN still has a contract, but can you do it in a
- 30:14different way? Because year after year it
- 30:16paints them into a corner. They look idiotic.
- 30:18It doesn't matter who the chair is.
- 30:19And and they had an awful one again this year.
- 30:22Is it time for this TV show, at least how it's currently set up,
- 30:25to go a different direction? No, because we won't have
- 30:28content to complain about. I mean, I, I, I, I empathize
- 30:32with them because no matter what justification they give in a
- 30:36situation like that, they're going to get roasted.
- 30:39So I, I get less and, and people say, well, they change the value
- 30:42of what they we all do that we all change our minds every week.
- 30:46I change my mind, but I, I've been pretty consistent about I'm
- 30:50the way I order it is who you play, who you beat, who you lose
- 30:53to. Some people value different
- 30:57things. Like Trent, if you and I made a
- 30:59top 25, we might have different things.
- 31:01And but why? You're right about the TV show
- 31:05portion from the standpoint of why do it for four weeks and box
- 31:08yourself in a corner when you don't have to?
- 31:10And I think that could come next.
- 31:13Yeah, I like it. I'm sure you Phil's column
- 31:15interest for you. It fills segments for Trent and
- 31:17I so selfishly, I I love it for that reason.
- 31:21Bill, is there a team outside the top five seeds that that you
- 31:25think that, you know, it might be a surprise, but they could
- 31:29win? A national champion is the one
- 31:31outside the top five, Bill. I only think 5 teams can win it.
- 31:35The only five teams I can win it are the the top five, you know,
- 31:39is probably the most exciting excited I am to see a team
- 31:43because I want to be around that team.
- 31:45And when I was around Jacob Rodriguez a little bit Monday at
- 31:48the and he is an impressive human.
- 31:51His parents are impressive people.
- 31:53And I want to see what this Texas Tech team does in the
- 31:57College Football Playoff. I mean, the potential matchup
- 32:00I'm probably most excited for should be Georgia, Ohio State,
- 32:04but I've seen that one. I want to see Oregon, Texas
- 32:06Tech. And then I think, you know, I
- 32:09think those two are capable of winning it.
- 32:11And I think Indiana, Georgia and Ohio State are playing around.
- 32:14I can leave whatever Alabama, they'll possibly get GM Miller
- 32:19back. They couldn't run the ball
- 32:20against Georgia. But very few teams.
- 32:22If you're looking for a dark horse A-Team to come a little
- 32:24bit deeper down into the bracket, Is it the Crimson Tide
- 32:27or is it somebody else that can win the four games that can do
- 32:30that? And, and when you get kind of
- 32:31through those top heavy heads, is it the Crimson Tide or
- 32:34somebody else? I think they're going to win
- 32:36their first round game. I think they're going to beat
- 32:38Oklahoma, fight us all. You know, like we'd sit here say
- 32:42you shouldn't be in. I think they're going to win an
- 32:45ugly game against Alabama and that they are the team with the
- 32:47talent that could make that run. Now, Caitlin, first question,
- 32:51he's going to take in the press conference.
- 32:52What's it going to be about? Yep, it's going to be about
- 32:54Michigan. So you know, that's something
- 32:58he's going to have to contend with.
- 32:59So but I like their chances. I also like Miami.
- 33:03I picked Texas and M, but I kind of like Miami in that matchup
- 33:06and and you know, a drama piece we could get there is Miami
- 33:10playing Texas or Georgia in the second round and then you get
- 33:13Carson back against his former team.
- 33:15So they're. Oh, lovely.
- 33:17How fun would that be? Yeah, no.
- 33:21Hey, my last thing for you mentioned Jacob Rodriguez.
- 33:23You you saw him at the Nagurski. Were you surprised that he
- 33:27didn't get enough votes even to get a invite?
- 33:30Invite to New York in the Heisman ceremony?
- 33:32I was Bill. I think he should have been in
- 33:35the top five and and you get a defensive player there.
- 33:39It's really hard for defensive players to win the Heisman.
- 33:41Like I said, the kind of for that.
- 33:43And then, you know, I was fortunate enough to it was
- 33:47really fun to present that award.
- 33:48I can't thank you guys enough because I wouldn't have been
- 33:51able to do something like that if I'm not on the radio with
- 33:53guys like you and all over the country.
- 33:55So thank you. And I still can't tie a bow tie,
- 33:59by the way. But he was he was very deserving
- 34:04of that award. And he's cleaning up on the
- 34:06circuit. When you clean up like that,
- 34:07that is a defensive player. We're all the other awards.
- 34:10It probably says, yeah, he should have been in New York as
- 34:12a finalist. Bill Bender from The Sporting
- 34:15News sportingnews.com For all of Bill Bender's great work,
- 34:18sportingnews.com Bill, enjoy the rest of the week.
- 34:21Thank you, brother. We'll talk to you down the road.
- 34:23Many times. Kent, you guys do well.
- 34:25Talk to you soon. Thank you.
- 34:26Good to talk to you Bill Bender as we check in on in college
- 34:29football with Bill Bender. We are live Trent Condon myself,
- 34:33Ken Miller live is also our sister station News 401040 our
- 34:38News Radio rather 1040 WHO it's the variety 2 days of Compassion
- 34:42Radiothon as we broadcast live from Jordan Creek Town Center.
- 34:46We are on the lower level and center court just down by the
- 34:50escalators. And why are we here?
- 34:52Well, we'd love for you to to pick up the phone if you have an
- 34:55opportunity to do so. I'll call 515-2766, 6669 Variety
- 35:02Children's charity. They do such great work.
- 35:05Over 100,000 kids touched by Variety here in central Iowa
- 35:11over the last year alone, which in and of itself is alarming.
- 35:14It's shocking just how many people, how many kids do need,
- 35:17the families do need this type of of hope and of help.
- 35:22But Variety Club certainly checks that box.
- 35:24We'll take a time out. We'll come back.
- 35:26More on the the reason we are here, the Variety Children's
- 35:29charity. We come back Miller and Condon
- 35:31Till, 2, on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:45Hi welcome back Miller and Condon live on the Iowa Sports
- 35:48Radio network wherever you're listening grateful that you are
- 35:50the variety 2 days of compassion Radiothon continues on both
- 35:54today and tomorrow. We're broadcasting live along
- 35:57with our sister station News Radio 1040 WHO we're Jordan
- 36:02Creek Town Center. We are on the lower level at
- 36:04center core. Well Ryan Douglas joins us.
- 36:07He is the charitable giving advisor at Community Foundation
- 36:10Des Moines. So first of all, before we get
- 36:13into that, Ryan, good to meet you.
- 36:14Appreciate that. What does, what does your title
- 36:17mean? What do you do?
- 36:18Yeah, thank you for having me, Senior charitable giving
- 36:20advisor. I work with donors and really at
- 36:23the end of the day I'm looking to help connect them with causes
- 36:25they care about and do that in effective giving ways.
- 36:27Well, this is a wonderful, wonderful charity.
- 36:30We just talked to a grandmother of a little girl with terminal.
- 36:33Sadly, I mean, it's just, it's just the heartstrings, right?
- 36:36Just pulls at them. And I and I can't imagine what
- 36:38these families are going through, what she mentioned to
- 36:41us. And I think it's probably as
- 36:43critical a talking point as we have.
- 36:45There was no red tape. They reached out for help for
- 36:48their family. Within two days, they had it.
- 36:51They weren't bounced around from, you know, phone number to
- 36:53phone number, desk to desk. Two days, bang, They had the
- 36:56help and they continue to get it.
- 36:57Yeah, they great organization, statewide reach and you know,
- 37:01Wendy and her team do such a nice job and and you like you
- 37:03said those stories, that's what we're here for, right?
- 37:07I know, Ryan, when you go through and you look at variety,
- 37:10keeping it in state, you know, we hear so many of these big
- 37:13organizations and then kind of dig under the hood and you find
- 37:16out that a lot of that money that our local people are giving
- 37:19doesn't stay local. That's something that I
- 37:21absolutely love. Learning more about Variety is
- 37:24the money that is spent by Iowans is staying and helping
- 37:27out Iowans. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:28Keeping things local and you know, representing the Community
- 37:31Foundation today, that's, that's what we're about, right?
- 37:33There's a lot of giving options out there, sending money
- 37:35nationally and then like you said, may or may not see all of
- 37:38it in return. So Community Foundation, really
- 37:40we're here to educate people. And you know, I was just on a
- 37:42different show talking about helping donors think outside
- 37:45their checkbook. You know, 80% of all charitable
- 37:48giving happens via cash, check, savings, credit card, 90 plus
- 37:52percent of people's wealth, non cash, Yeah, about their house
- 37:55investments, all of that. So when we work with
