- 0:00Any questions we're. Back This is the Jabba and the
- 0:04Mouth show. As I walk through the valley of
- 0:16the shadow of death, I take a look at my life and realize I'm

- 0:41You heard him. Executive producer Mr. Aaron
- 0:44Fish, Fishman at the back end or maybe in the back rear.
- 0:48You know what I'm talking about. Mr. Nith himself.
- 0:51Nith, our PR manager. And Jabba is, you know,
- 0:55obviously hanging out with the fam.
- 0:57This is a holiday, a holiday week for him.
- 1:00His son's going back to college. So maybe job will sneak right in
- 1:04for for a couple of segments. I don't know.
- 1:06He did reach out to me early today that he's going to be
- 1:09hanging out with the fam. But shout out to the Jobster as
- 1:13he's not hanging out and and downloading any Napster music
- 1:16because they're no longer around.
- 1:18Anyways, I tried to be funny there.
- 1:19He was a little lost. I don't want to.
- 1:21I don't want to get us in trouble on any point on this
- 1:24show. 316-7231 O 8 is the number to call.

- 1:42website at www.worldwidesportsradio.com.
- 1:48We are waiting for our guest. I don't know what's going on,
- 1:51but whenever Daniel Winkler joins us, we will have them on.
- 1:56It's, it's been a crazy one. And by the way, I, I'm reading
- 2:01all the different posts on YouTube and I, you know what's
- 2:05funny about Jeff and Jeff, you obviously, you come in, you come
- 2:10out, you disappear, you, you show up after six or seven
- 2:14months and you show your ugly face and you know what?
- 2:18I think you're so funny is as soon as I give my take on
- 2:22Fernando Mendoza and he doesn't like it, he disappears.
- 2:24And I got to give Jeff a little bit of credit because if there's
- 2:28anybody that knows about college football, it's Jeff.
- 2:31But to say that Fernando Mendoza is not going to be anything in
- 2:35the NFL or he's to me or to him, he thinks he's he shouldn't have
- 2:39won the Heisman. I could say about.
- 2:41I could say the same thing about Travis Hunter, who, by the way,
- 2:44Jeff said should have won the Heisman Trophy last year, which
- 2:48he did. And where is Travis Hunter right
- 2:51now? Oh, that's right.
- 2:52He barely had a season, was not any good this year and look like
- 2:57crap. So I'm not saying Jeff's always
- 3:00right. And there were other people,
- 3:01other linebackers in the league I can mention in Arizona.
- 3:06One of them, I don't know if he's still there, who he thought
- 3:08was. Going to be so special.
- 3:09The next big thing? Zavin Collins.
- 3:10Yeah, how good is Zavin Collins in the NFL?
- 3:13Average of best. OK.
- 3:14And I remember when he said Zavin Collins was a first round
- 3:17talent. Was he a first round talent?
- 3:19Now when you look at them, the answer would be no.
- 3:21You're not always right, Jeff. Nobody's always right.
- 3:24And we don't know what these guys are going to turn out to
- 3:26be. Go ask.
- 3:28I don't know, over 200 draft, you know, 202 hundred teams.
- 3:33Go ask 30 teams with two almost 200 picks or 145 picks when Tom
- 3:38Brady was drafted. Or go back in time, Russell
- 3:41Wilson, who was drafted in the third round and look out.
- 3:44Look how he turned out to be. I mean, there are our
- 3:46quarterbacks and there are players that have been drafted
- 3:49over the years, drafted in the later rounds that become
- 3:51something. So I don't know, I I don't know
- 3:55why he thinks Mendoza isn't going to be good.
- 3:57And maybe he's right. Maybe Mendoza isn't doesn't turn
- 4:00out to be good. And maybe as a Jeff fan, I don't
- 4:02want to see or take a chance to see if he fails here in New
- 4:06York. But when I saw at at the Heisman
- 4:11Trophy dinner and and my interview with him and my
- 4:14conversations with him and his teammates, I think he's special.
- 4:18I think he's going to fit here in New York like a glove, either
- 4:21with the Giants or The Jets, maybe even Vegas.
- 4:24If Vegas somehow gets the number one pick or if they're, they
- 4:28fall out of the top three right now and fall, If they beat the
- 4:32Giants and fall out and fall to seven or eight, wherever they
- 4:35fall behind the New York Jets and they want to move up to jump
- 4:39to one with the the Giants. I, I, I could see him do very
- 4:43well with Vegas as well. I think the opportunity and the
- 4:46possibilities that this kid has as a young superstar quarterback
- 4:51is very high. And I, I, I just like his
- 4:54personality. It fits.
- 4:55If he goes to a city that doesn't have a good fan base, I
- 4:59think he'll be better, but has a big fan base like New York.
- 5:02I think he'll fit very, very well here because he's got the
- 5:05personality like an Eli Manning. I think he's very quiet.
- 5:09He's very strategic on how he attacks the questions and he
- 5:12understands what the media will, how the media would judge him if
- 5:17he uses the wrong presentation or the wrong answers to the
- 5:23questions. I think he's very good at that.
- 5:25I think he fits here in New York, no question.
- 5:28You have mentioned that you mentioned the leadership when
- 5:30you were talking to me on the phone when we were at the
- 5:32Heisman Trophy and I think it probably fits the mindset of.
- 5:35But they're like I said, I, I got to give Jeff a little bit of
- 5:38credit because he has been right sometimes on players and, and if
- 5:42they, and I always go to Jeff when it comes to college players
- 5:45because he bets on them. So he knows the inside sources
- 5:50of these players and and and he also also worked in, I think,
- 5:55insurance. Insurance for insurance for
- 5:58college athletes. I think Tennessee was his first
- 6:00stop and then he roved around the SEC.
- 6:02So he knows, he knows college football.
- 6:04So whenever I'm trying to get information about a certain
- 6:08college football player, I'm going to Jeff, but the the
- 6:12attacks that and I would say he attacked Fernando Mendoza, but
- 6:15he tells me Fernando Mendoza and I see that we have our guest in.
- 6:18So don't worry about it guys. I'm going to introduce them in
- 6:21just a second. I want to finish my take care.
- 6:23I I think Fernando Mendoza has an opportunity to become a star
- 6:29player in this league because of his personality.
- 6:32He's got the ability to step into the pocket.
- 6:34He has the ability to throw outside of the hashes, and he
- 6:37can do things on the run that other quarterbacks can't do in
- 6:41the NFL right now. And he's very accurate.
- 6:43He's one of the more accurate quarterbacks in college football
- 6:46today. So to say that he can't succeed
- 6:50or become an elite quarterback in this league, I think that's
- 6:53crazy. Again, only time will tell.
- 6:56Anyways, he's in, ladies and gentlemen, for the first time on
- 7:00Jabba to Mouth. Jabba is not with us as of right
- 7:02now, but we are now talking to former Braves and Cubs pitcher
- 7:06Daniel Winkler. Daniel, what's up, buddy?
- 7:12What's up guys? Sorry about my my tardiness,
- 7:15that's all. Right.
- 7:16Home for the holidays so trying to figure all this out.
- 7:19I hear the background. First of all, who you hanging
- 7:21out with? What part of the family are you
- 7:24are, you know, celebrating the holidays with?
- 7:29Yeah, my mom and dad. So I live in Nashville, just
- 7:32outside Nashville. I grew up in Illinois, so my
- 7:36wife and I are from this area. So we came, came, came back to
- 7:39Illinois for the weekend. About to go head back tomorrow
- 7:42to warmer weather. Where's that Florida?
- 7:49I wish. Where?
- 7:50Arizona? Nashville, Yeah, a Nashville?
- 7:52No, but. Oh, so you're going back to
- 7:54Nashville after after tonight? Yeah, that's, yeah, that's where
- 7:59we live. All right.
- 8:00I thought you were in Nashville hanging out with the fam.
- 8:02That's where you I. But I got you.
- 8:04I got what you're saying. I wish I was.
- 8:07Yeah, yeah, I wish. Just in BFE, Illinois.
- 8:11All right, so he's in Illinois, he's enjoying the the holidays
- 8:15with his fam and we are talking to former Braves and Cubs
- 8:19pitcher Daniel Winkler. Dan, before we get into the
- 8:22Braves offseason and the Cubs offseason, I, I, do you see
- 8:26yourself coming back to the majors?
- 8:28Do you see yourself playing again in the MLB?
- 8:30And what have you been doing since your 2021 season with the
- 8:36Cubs? Yeah, I would love to, but I I
- 8:40don't think I got too many Gray hairs now.
- 8:42I don't think they want old guys anymore.
- 8:45So how old are you? What?
- 8:46Do you mean old guys? Yeah, I'm, I'll be 36 in a
- 8:51couple months. So I always thought I'd play
- 8:54till 40. I played with Jason Greeley, who
- 8:57played, I think he was 42 when he retired.
- 9:00So I always thought that was going to be me, but wasn't in
- 9:03the cards. I mean, sometime maybe if
- 9:05there's coaching or something, I'd like to get back.
- 9:07I got three small kids, so I like spending time.
- 9:11I've spent 12 years, you know, running all over the country.
- 9:15So it's it's nice to be home and take the kids to school and pick
- 9:18them up from school every now and.
- 9:19Then All right, so why don't we go into the offseason first with
- 9:23the Braves and the Braves obviously signed their shortstop
- 9:28and and he he looked pretty good in the second-half of the
- 9:30season. A pretty good defender can hit
- 9:32for average. The Braves, I would have
- 9:35thought, and they have a great farm system.
- 9:37They always have a great farm system.
- 9:39They always find a great pitcher in their farm system.
- 9:43And we see what a Cunha has turned out to be when healthy,
- 9:46he's one of the more dominant to dual dual threats in the major
- 9:50leagues. Why do you think the Braves
- 9:53haven't put or spent the money that a lot of other teams have
- 9:58spent over the last couple of years?
- 10:01That's a good question and and one that I've never really
- 10:06thought of because I think it lined up being a bigger market.
- 10:10They probably have the money and the funds to do so.
- 10:13You know, and it feels like when was the last time they spent
- 10:15money maybe for their first baseman when they traded Freddie
- 10:20away. Yeah.
- 10:21So, yeah, yeah. You know, I don't know.
- 10:24I don't know if it has something to do with their ownership.
- 10:26You know, their ownership is public.
- 10:28So that has the bottom line has something to do with that.
- 10:32You know, I also think that like you, you mentioned earlier, they
- 10:35are so good with their farm system.
- 10:37I played with all those guys, Riley, Acuna, Ozzy, all those
- 10:42guys when they came up and they were, you know, nobody's then
- 10:45really. So they're they're really good
- 10:47at that. Maybe they feel like that's a
- 10:49good spot for them and a good place to be and they, you know,
- 10:52don't have don't want to put the resources towards somebody else.
- 10:56I want to ask from the the pitching injury standpoint,
- 10:58something that's affected the Braves, it's affected a lot of
- 11:00different teams. There was a report last year
- 11:02about like all the different factors to why these pitchers
- 11:04are getting much more elbow injuries, more Tommy John
- 11:07surgeries in general. Like obviously you playing with
- 11:09a lot of those pitchers there that have dealt with it.
- 11:11Like what do you think is the biggest factors between either
- 11:13development or training that it hurts these pitchers?
- 11:16Yeah. So, you know, the last year I
- 11:18spent working at a place called Drive on baseball drivelines,
- 11:22you know, pretty big and the weighted ball scene and, you
- 11:25know, performance. What I'll say is I think it's
- 11:30it's kind of the culture it is, you know, like your jobs on the
- 11:34line. There's there's such a small
- 11:36margin to throw harder. And that's kind of those are the
- 11:39guys who get contracts right, the guys who throw harder, the
- 11:42guys who have the best stuff. So you're always going to try
- 11:45every offseason to throw harder, be better, be stronger, and
- 11:48that's just kind of the the environment that they set up.
- 11:52So I think those arm injuries are just a condition of what the
- 11:58game is. And, and I'm not sure it's a bad
- 12:01thing in a way. It's just kind of, you know, as
- 12:03a player, you just kind of accept it.
- 12:04It's just how it is. You have Tommy John, you're out
- 12:08of year to come back and hopefully you don't have to do
- 12:10it again. As everybody knows, we are
- 12:12talking to former Braves and Cubs pitcher Daniel Winkler.
- 12:15He pitched for the Braves from 2015 to the 2019 and he pitched
- 12:21for the Cubs from 2020 to 2021. Daniel, the fact the fact is I,
- 12:28I don't get it. Chris Sales, he he has one of
- 12:32these all time great seasons. He's a great pitcher and then he
- 12:36gets hurt. I mean, obviously the way he
- 12:38throws the ball, a lot of people question the way his release
- 12:40point and a lot of people say he puts a lot of torque on his his
- 12:44arm and his elbow. But when this guy is on point,
- 12:47this guy is one of the best pitchers in baseball.
- 12:50The Boston Red Sox decided to part ways with him because he
- 12:53couldn't stay healthy. The Braves bring him in to fill
- 12:56in with some of the to give him some depth after, you know, Max
- 13:01Freed went to the New York Yankees.
- 13:03Why do you think Chris Sale just turned into the superstar
- 13:07pitcher he once was when he came when he went to the Boston Red
- 13:11Sox? Yeah, I think change of scenery
- 13:14always, you know, I think sometimes as fans maybe forget
- 13:18that they're humans, that, you know, sometimes changing
- 13:22sceneries can be good for guys. And I think Chris Sale grew up
- 13:26in Florida or in the South, So I think Atlanta was kind of a
- 13:31hometown team and Atlanta's good for that.
- 13:33I mean, the Braves fans are amazing.
- 13:36They're very welcoming. And the the dude is nasty.
- 13:39You know, I think the problem wasn't him on the field.
- 13:43It was just keeping him on the field, right?
- 13:45Coming to Atlanta just was a a really good thing for him.
- 13:50And and, you know, I think that probably helped him, you know,
- 13:56pitch better. Like I said, the guy is
- 13:58disgusting. I remember watching him.
- 14:01I was used to try to hang out in the dugout as much as possible.
- 14:04And watching him like first hand, he's just disgusting.
- 14:08He's not just good stuff, but he's deceptive.
- 14:11And you know, there's lots of guys out there that have just
- 14:14nasty stuff. But if you can also make it look
- 14:18just, you know, like not like everyone else makes really good.
- 14:22And that's why he's he's as good as he is.
- 14:24Now you say deceptive. What?
- 14:25What as a pitcher now everybody asks, well, what makes a pitcher
- 14:29so deceptive? When you watch Chris Sale now
- 14:32obviously it's release point. What makes his pitching style so
- 14:35deceptive? Yeah, I think he hides the ball
- 14:39really well. You don't see the ball until,
- 14:41you know, almost that release point.
- 14:43A lot of hitters will say, you know, I remember when I was
- 14:46teammates with Chris Bryant when he would talk about, you know,
- 14:49how he would look into a window and if it was coming out of the
- 14:53window, he knew whether to swing at it or if it was going to be a
- 14:56ball. And Chris Sale is the guy that
- 14:58you can't really, you know, look out of a window.
- 15:00It's kind of more you got to adjust.
- 15:03There's no other left-handed pitchers that throw like him.
- 15:06So these hitters are so used to seeing certain guys that are at
- 15:10a certain arm angle that throw different stuff.
- 15:13And he's not like those guys. And then he's throwing, you
- 15:15know, 100 from that angle with a wipeout slider.
- 15:18The deception comes from hiding. And then also he's unlike
- 15:22anybody else that's, you know, in baseball, uniqueness and
- 15:24something, he said. Another nasty pitcher over there
- 15:27with the the Braves is Spencer Strider.
- 15:30And this guy is for everybody, somebody's fantasy team.
- 15:34When healthy, this guy is as dominant as any pitcher we've
- 15:37seen. And, and when he's at the top of
- 15:40his game and he's healthy, you can compare him to some of the
- 15:43best pitchers, the screwball, the school bowls and all the
- 15:47other guys that we we mentioned. What makes Spencer Strider so
- 15:51good and why can't this kid stay healthy for a full season?
- 15:55It's been 2 years, why can't this kid stay healthy?
- 15:58That's a great question. The quads probably make him so
- 16:01good and the quads are probably the reason why I can't stay
- 16:03healthy. Not you know, I, I think we
- 16:08talked about earlier how you put so much stress on the arm and
- 16:12his stuff is so nasty throws so hard.
- 16:15He's so strong from what I hear, you know, the guy can squat the
- 16:18house. So I think he's just putting so
- 16:21much torque and so much pressure on his arm and his whole body.
- 16:27You know, I think he, the other thing from what I've heard is he
- 16:31is pretty religious about stretching, being mobile, those
- 16:34kind of things. So I would expect him to be
- 16:40healthier than he is. And you know, the Tommy John,
- 16:42those kind of things, they seem like freak things more than more
- 16:47than they should be. So hopefully in the future stay
- 16:51healthy and you know, be maybe 3-4 five years down the road and
- 16:56lead them to a couple World Series.
- 16:58So Ronald Lacuna on and off the field.
- 17:00Obviously on off on the field, he's been fantastic when he has
- 17:02been healthy, deal with a bunch of major leg injuries
- 17:05unfortunately in recent years. But off the field he's sometimes
- 17:08spawned some controversy too with we've seen with Tatis,
- 17:10we've seen a lot of the other guys that have been flair.
- 17:12There was a tension with his manager this year of Ryan
- 17:15Snicker, who is kind of more of an old school guy and benched
- 17:18him for a few games because of that.
- 17:19Like what type of personality was a Cunha and do you have any
- 17:22good stories of him? Yeah, Ronnie's the best, a
- 17:25really good teammate. Really.
- 17:27He loves baseball. You know, I think that's one
- 17:30thing I always remember. Ronnie just loved to come in and
- 17:35just be at the baseball field and talk baseball.
- 17:39You know, the only good story that I have, like I said, when I
- 17:41was 2015, I came over, I actually had Tommy John.
- 17:45All those guys were in the GCL, so they were in rookie ball.
- 17:48And I remember watching Ronald hit BP and they were talking,
- 17:52you know, this guy signed for $10,000 and it just sounded
- 17:56different off his bat. The guy was just hitting nukes,
- 17:59like 500 foot homers. And you know, I was like,
- 18:03everyone was saying this kids going to be something someday.
- 18:06And it wasn't, you know, a year or two he was #1 prospect top
- 18:11100, those kind of things. So I think everybody knew once
- 18:15they laid out Ronnie that he was going to be something special.
- 18:18And yeah, I think he that's why him and Snit, kind of like you
- 18:22said, Snit's old school. He came from Bobby, you know, I
- 18:26I butted heads with him a little bit too, you know, I he's so old
- 18:29school and and Ronnie does too. He just wants to play the game.
- 18:32He wants to have fun and enjoy his time.
- 18:35And it's hard. Like 162 games, you're the face
- 18:38of the franchise, those kind of things.
- 18:40So, you know, when, when that happened, I I wasn't as
- 18:43surprised because they are personalities do flash a little
- 18:45bit. But I think Snit and Ronald, you
- 18:48know, behind the scenes have such a good relationship.
- 18:50I think it's just kind of in the media, those kind of things.
- 18:53He he needs to kind of, I don't want to say teach him a lesson,
- 18:56but he had to do something about it.
- 18:59We are talking to former Braves and Cubs pitcher Daniel Winkler.
- 19:03Pitch from 2015 to 2019 with the Braves, in 2020 to 2021 with the
- 19:10Cubs. We look at the catchers in the
- 19:14league and there's a lot of great or good catchers, but
- 19:19there's only like 3 elite ones and you've had you've, you've
- 19:25thrown to a couple of good ones over there with the Atlanta
- 19:28Braves. Is there a particular catcher
- 19:30now? Because I there was a catcher
- 19:32that was just traded to the Boston Red Sox, Pretty good one.
- 19:38Is there a specific catcher that you like to throw to and why did
- 19:43you like to throw to to throw to him at any point of your career?
- 19:48Yeah, you know, to come to mind the new Angels manager, Kurt
- 19:55Suzuki. I love throwing to Zook.
- 19:58I think Zook and I had a really good relationship.
- 20:02I don't know what it was about him.
- 20:03Maybe it's kind of the smaller target.
- 20:06You know, when I would throw the flow, he was such a big target
- 20:09back there like that aim small, Miss small kind of thing.
- 20:12And then Willie guy you mentioned, and I love throwing
- 20:15to Willie. Willie was so good because he
- 20:21again, maybe it might might be that aim small, miss small.
- 20:23But he he tell you how it is, you know if like.
- 20:26Hey, this is what we're going to do.
- 20:28This is why we're going to do it.
- 20:29You're going to go execute and then you'd go back and when we
- 20:32do it and I and I love that kind of kind of, you know, style from
- 20:36my catcher, like he knows what we're going to do.
- 20:38He's been in the game so long. So I really like to to throw to
- 20:42Wilson and great guy. I hope you know he does some
- 20:45special things over in Boston. See, I threw a curveball at you
- 20:48because I knew you threw to Wilson Catreras.
- 20:51And we have some Boston fans that are big Boston Red Sox
- 20:54fans. What type of player is Wilson
- 20:58Catreras? What type of player?
- 21:01Well, like I said, he's very, I want to say Stern, but he knows
- 21:10how to play the game. He knows what he wants to do and
- 21:16and he's one of those guys that also loves to play the game.
- 21:19You know, a lot of the Dominican guys, Venezuelan guys, like
- 21:23those guys love playing baseball.
- 21:24I just saw a video of LA De La Cruz playing pick up baseball
- 21:28and, you know, just wherever. So those guys love playing
- 21:31baseball. And that's what I love about,
- 21:34you know, Willie and Ronald and those guys.
- 21:37Javi was another guy that comes to mind.
- 21:39So I think of of Wilson like that and always smiling, always
- 21:43like welcoming. And you know, he was, I remember
- 21:47when I came over, everyone was saying he was not that good with
- 21:49the the pitching staff when, but when I came over, he was, he was
- 21:53great. He asked a ton of good
- 21:54questions. He was always into the scouting
- 22:00reports, those kind of things. He was very welcoming.
- 22:03So I think he's probably been to a few teams now that he kind of
- 22:07is that veteran status. He knows what he needs to do.
- 22:10He's going to pick up where he needs to, you know, kind of be
- 22:13and I think he always knows his bat is what's going to keep him
- 22:18in the lineup as well and, and on the field.
- 22:20So he's he's good for that too. So you actually were managed by
- 22:25another catcher too, and David Ross when you were at the Cub.
- 22:27See, it was his first two years and then he was fired a couple
- 22:30years ago after they decided to spend a lot on Craig Council,
- 22:33which maybe that was, we'll see. But I always thought Ross was a
- 22:36smart guy. He was loved by that Cubs World
- 22:38Series team as the first string catcher in 2016.
- 22:40I always thought he was going to be a manager at some point.
- 22:42It just made a lot of sense. But what was he like?
- 22:45And obviously you compare him with Snicker, who he said was
- 22:47very old school and Stern was like personalities with ex
- 22:50player being a manager. How is that different?
- 22:52Yeah, you know, I love both of those guys, you know, but like
- 22:56you said, totally different the way they managed.
- 23:00When Rossi came over, he had his locker room right next to the to
- 23:05the clubhouse and snit was more of like see not heard kind of
- 23:10style. And Rossi was, you know, he he
- 23:13had your back and that was for me out.
- 23:15That's just kind of player I was like, I wanted to know that you
- 23:19had my back and Rossi was really good about putting you in in
- 23:22situations where you can succeed.
- 23:25And I just, if you didn't succeed, you know, he came over,
- 23:30he told you why he did this kind of stuff.
- 23:32So I think Rossi will be a manager again someday.
- 23:36I was hoping it'd be with the Braves.
- 23:39I think they're in, you know, the Braves are in good hands
- 23:41with Walt. You know, another player's coach
- 23:44as well. I had, I had Walt as a bench
- 23:46coach when I was with the Braves.
- 23:48So I think Rossi will be successful wherever he goes.
- 23:52I was kind of bummed when the Cubs let him go.
- 23:55I think he did a really good job.
- 23:56I think he he's more of a leader of people.
- 23:59And so I, I'd be excited to see where he lands in the future and
- 24:04you know what, what that plays, how that plays out, I guess.
- 24:07All right, so I want to, I do want to get into the Cubs, but I
- 24:11I want to go into the league. And what is it about people and
- 24:16fans and even players attacking managers?
- 24:20Now there's one over here in New York and Aaron Boone.
- 24:23A lot of fans don't like Aaron Boone.
- 24:25I don't know why. I mean, the guy wins.
- 24:27He hasn't won a World Series and it's not very easy to win a
- 24:30World Series. The Yankees haven't won a World
- 24:32Series since 2009. Go watch a Rods documentary.
- 24:35It's not easy and usually the Yankees and I don't know if you
- 24:39can remember a, you can pick a team right now that's had
- 24:43winning season after winning season after winning season.
- 24:46Then the Yankees. The Yankees have won 35 winning
- 24:49season. I think it's 35 or 34 winning
- 24:51seasons. I they haven't had a losing
- 24:53season since 93 and has a lot to do with management.
- 24:57It has a lot to do with ownership.
- 24:59Do you could you tell me why fans have their own thoughts
- 25:04about managers now? They're not in the dugout.
- 25:06They don't know how they manage you or they don't know how they
- 25:09call a game. But for some reason, if they
- 25:11don't like the manager or they don't like how he calls a game
- 25:14or they don't like that he follows analytics.
- 25:17Why is it that fans or even some players don't like the
- 25:22analytically sound manager that is going in and is going to
- 25:27reach out to the booth and and they're going to give you the
- 25:30analytic answer to every single equation?
- 25:33Yeah. You know, I think the fear of
- 25:35when you hear like the analytics is that that they're kind of a
- 25:38puppet, you know, from the player's standpoint, you know,
- 25:42is, is the GM or who who's calling the shots, actually.
- 25:46And I think there's a nostalgia or whatever you want to call it
- 25:51of kind of that old school baseball, like you want the
- 25:54manager to call the game, those kind of things.
- 25:57But there's so much behind the scenes that you don't see what's
- 25:59going on on, you know, when you're in between the lines is
- 26:02what we'd call it. You see what happens there and
- 26:06you don't know all the planning, all the, the, you know, these
- 26:10guys like Rossi was a great example when we were in the
- 26:14bullpen, we would have blocks of, hey, you know, if we get to
- 26:17this block of hitters, you know, 345 and it's going to be the 6th
- 26:22or 7th inning, you're going to pitch in this inning.
- 26:25And and so like that planning and all that kind of stuff.
- 26:27Those guys, man, they, they'd stay till 1/2 A 2:00 AM in the
- 26:31morning and they'd be there at 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning the
- 26:34next day. So like, you know, I think it's,
- 26:37it's hard to ever as somebody who's played to ever like be
- 26:42hard on a, on a manager, because I know how much goes into it.
- 26:46Those guys don't want to suck. They don't want to go only win
- 26:4960 games or everyone's trying to do their best.
- 26:53But you know, I don't know why fans are.
- 26:55I think it's just because, you know, you see what goes on on
- 26:58the field. And then there's also
- 27:01perception. I I think the world is
- 27:02perception. Baseball's one of those is like,
- 27:05how are you perceived? So managers are probably like,
- 27:08you know, this is how I see this guy and this is, but that may
- 27:15not be what's going on. So yeah, I don't know if that
- 27:18answers the question, but that's kind of my thought.
- 27:20No. And it's interesting to me
- 27:22because as a fan, and if you don't realize, I'm a Yankee fan
- 27:27and my perception of my team is, is, is not to attack the manager
- 27:33or the GM is the tech, the players.
- 27:35The players got to go out on the field and do their job.
- 27:37And if they're not doing their job, the first person that's
- 27:39going to be pointed to is the manager.
- 27:41It just so happens even if you're not batting, you're not
- 27:44hitting. Who's getting fired?
- 27:46The hitting coach. That's what happens.
- 27:48It might not be the hitting coaches problem or it's not his
- 27:51fault, but if they're not hitting, they got to point their
- 27:53finger at somebody. They can't point their finger at
- 27:55the player that's got a five year, 200, $50 million contract.
- 27:59So to me, that's the way I'm going to attack it.
- 28:02And, and if I'm running an organization as AGM, that's the
- 28:06only way I can attack it unless I'm going to trade that player
- 28:08and who's going to want him if he's not hitting, You know what
- 28:11I mean? Like Anthony Volpe.
- 28:13Now when you see a guy like Anthony Volpe that sometimes
- 28:17watching him, he got you kind of shake your head.
- 28:20How does a Gold Glove winner 2 years ago throw the ball over
- 28:24the first baseman? And how does a Gold Glove type
- 28:28of player do the stupid things that he has done on the foot on
- 28:31a on a baseball field? And you kind of wonder why he is
- 28:34doing this. And maybe he's mentally confused
- 28:37or maybe it's just mental. When they say baseball is, is,
- 28:41is 50% mental? What is what is it?
- 28:44What do they mean by that 50% mental?
- 28:47Why are they mentally drawn? Why do they forget how to throw
- 28:50the ball to first base or second base or third base or to the
- 28:54catcher? Because Chuck Noblock had me
- 28:57shaking my head every single time I watched him play for the
- 29:01New York Yankees. This guy wins Gold Gloves over
- 29:04there with the Twins. He comes to the Yankees and all
- 29:07aboard. He throws.
- 29:08He launches the ball out and where the fans are sitting.
- 29:12I I mean that doesn't or throw to the dugout.
- 29:14It made no sense to me. Now watchman's mom exactly or
- 29:18and watching Anthony Volpe do that, he kind of gets me
- 29:20wondering. Why did they say it's 50%
- 29:23mental? Why is he confused how to throw
- 29:25the ball to first base? Yeah, I think market matters.
- 29:29Like that's a a big pressure market, right, Yankees, all eyes
- 29:34on you all the time, no matter what.
- 29:37You're, you know, you're talking about that, but you know,
- 29:40there's such a small margin like I, I think I mentioned it
- 29:43earlier between these guys and you know, if you can get it
- 29:48here, you can succeed. If you lose it a little bit up
- 29:52here, the hell breaks loose. But Dan, I don't get that.
- 29:55How do you lose it? How do you lose it up there?
- 29:58How does how do you go from a guy that wins?
- 30:02It doesn't make sense. I don't get it.
- 30:04How do you lose it all of a sudden just forgot, hey, you
- 30:06know what? I can't throw to first base.
- 30:08I lost it. I don't get it.
- 30:09It's afraid to fail. You know, that one time you
- 30:12failed. I think I always I'm a big book
- 30:15guy, but there's a book about golfers.
- 30:21You know, when Justin Thomas and Jordan speed and these guys are
- 30:24coming up and they're fearless going for it and somebody looks
- 30:28to to tiger and they're like just give them time.
- 30:31They'll fail, you know, and and they're they'll experience that
- 30:34fear. I think that's kind of what I
- 30:36see when I watch both is kind of like he's got it there.
- 30:40It's kind of like that fear of failure.
- 30:41Oh, I've thrown it away. I've I've heard this before.
- 30:44It's kind of like, well, I don't want to mess up again.
- 30:46You know, I don't want to be that guy that lets the team down
- 30:49and it's too much into his head and he thinks about it too much.
- 30:52You know, I've, I've lived that my my last year with the Cubs, I
- 30:55gave up twelve runs and only got one out in my last week with it
- 30:58in the big leagues. And it was more of like, hey,
- 31:00we're not in the hunt anymore. Like, how can I'm just worried
- 31:04about not giving up runs, just trying to get to the kind of
- 31:07limp into the offseason. And that's kind of what I see
- 31:09with with Volpe is like instead of hey, I'm going to go get
- 31:12this, it's more of like, oh man, I don't want to F up and.
- 31:15And you got the fans booing in his ear and the fans, I have so
- 31:19many fans that are that used to be Volpe fans.
- 31:22This guy at one point some people thought was the future of
- 31:26the New York Yankees with Aaron Judge.
- 31:28And the there's got to be somebody that's going to, when
- 31:31Judge retires, there's got to be somebody that's going to take
- 31:34over for Aaron Judge. And everybody thought it was
- 31:35Anthony Volpe. They loved him in in in in the
- 31:39farm system in Trenton. And then he comes up and now the
- 31:42fans are already already willing to part ways with the kid.
- 31:46Oh, he's done. He give up on him.
- 31:48He's 2324 years old because he had a bad season.
- 31:51He couldn't throw to first base. He couldn't double play.
- 31:53He can throw a double play. He couldn't hit.
- 31:56He was batting 190 at some points of the season, even
- 31:59though the average player in major in the major leagues right
- 32:01now is batting 225. I mean, there's nothing that
- 32:05tells me that you got to give up on this kid.
- 32:06But every Yankee fan and every single person that I know and
- 32:10I've spoken to says fall paste on get rid of him.
- 32:12He's garbage. Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't say
- 32:15that. I think, you know, the the and
- 32:17I'm sure the Yankees don't feel that way either.
- 32:19You know, I think patience in in in sports, you know, is, is a
- 32:23good thing. You know, at a certain time, you
- 32:25know, you get so many, you know, I think what it's kind of that.
- 32:28What have you done for me lately?
- 32:30Culture, right. But I don't know.
- 32:33I mean, I don't know, won't be that that well, I I played with
- 32:37a few guys that or on the Yankees.
- 32:39I have to ask him, you know, what kind of you know, maybe
- 32:43he's going to show up to spring training this this year with
- 32:46like, you know, chip on the shoulder.
- 32:48You know, that's what I'm saying.
- 32:49Like the Yankees can, you know, if they they piss you off and
- 32:52you're like, Hey, I'm going to prove all you guys wrong.
- 32:55That's one thing. And that's it's kind of the
- 32:57personality. Clay Holmes is a good friend.
- 32:59He came in to New York. He was like, I'm going to prove
- 33:02everybody right. You know, the, the Pirates did
- 33:04me, did me wrong. Like the Yankees thought good of
- 33:07me. And like, I'm going to, I'm
- 33:09going to, I'm going to show people.
- 33:10And so I think a personality when they come, especially in
- 33:13New York, like you got to have that certain type of personality
- 33:17to play in in that city. Very interesting.
- 33:22I'm, I'm rooting for the kid. I, I want the Yankees to keep
- 33:26the kid. I want them to hold on to the
- 33:28kid. And I think he has the
- 33:30opportunity to really succeed this year.
- 33:33I just, I, I, I saw the, what do they call those bats?
- 33:36They changed the bats torpedo the torpedo bats.
- 33:39And, and he started hitting the beginning of the season and then
- 33:42he couldn't hit a lick and he couldn't hit for average.
- 33:44And Yankee fans were like, you could change a bat, but you
- 33:47can't change a bat speed. And I, I just, I, I hate when
- 33:51the Yankee fans just turn on players.
- 33:54I watched, I watched the documentary on Alex Rodriguez
- 33:56and we're going to talk about that next week where I just, I
- 34:00gave my take on it. Watching that documentary, it
- 34:02gives me an understanding of who Alex Rodriguez was.
- 34:05He just wanted to please the, the, the fans more than he
- 34:08wanted to please himself. And it really bothered me
- 34:11because the, the Yankee fans didn't really give him an, an
- 34:15opportunity to succeed as a Yankee player because they were
- 34:17all about Derek Jeter. They were all about the other
- 34:19guys and saying that Alex was not a real Yankee, which didn't
- 34:22make any sense because he, and I don't think people understand
- 34:27that Alex, when he was coming up on that contract, it wasn't him.
- 34:31It was somebody else. And we know who it was that was
- 34:34trying to renegotiate a deal for, for more money.
- 34:37And Alex was the guy that was kind of questioning this is not
- 34:41the proper time during the World Series to spin the wheel and
- 34:45make the deal in and, and drop this during the World Series.
- 34:48And it was just, to me, I, I think it was other people that
- 34:51really hurt Alex because Alex just didn't know how to speak
- 34:56for himself. And the fans got in the way of
- 34:58that too, because the fans just didn't like him because, oh, he
- 35:02cheated or he did steroids. So did everybody else.
- 35:05And that goes to my final question with you.
- 35:07This is a good question. You're a former player.
- 35:10You understand the game, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Rodger
- 35:18Clemens, and there are guys right now in the Hall of Fame
- 35:22that did steroids. I don't care what anybody says,
- 35:24they were they were doing steroids too.
- 35:27Do you believe that these guys being caught being prosecuted by
- 35:34the writers? Do you believe as a player in
- 35:38the new age of baseball, do you believe they should be in the
- 35:40Hall of Fame? Yes or no?
- 35:44I I do, I, I do think they should be.
- 35:48You know, I think Barry Bonds is a great example.
- 35:51Have you ever, have you looked at his numbers like his numbers
- 35:56are the stupidest thing that like they're so ridiculous.
- 36:01You know, his slugging percentage a few years were, was
- 36:05a good OPS, like an elite OPS. He had like 900 slug steroids
- 36:10didn't do that for him. You know, I think a lot of
- 36:13people will say the same thing, like a lot of people were doing
- 36:16it then it wasn't technically banned.
- 36:18You know, it was, but they weren't weren't testing for it.
- 36:25So yes, I do believe that they should be an Alex Rodriguez.
- 36:28Like the guy's a baller. I mean, he's legit.
- 36:32Yeah. Look at these stats off some of
- 36:36these he was intentionally walked like 5 * 1 year with base
- 36:39loaded or something ridiculous like that.
- 36:41It's ridiculous numbers. He's ridiculous.
- 36:43And and by the way, you might not like Barry Bonds and I know
- 36:46the writers hated him, just like Albert Bell.
- 36:49Albert Bell, If you go and look at Albert Bells numbers for a 7
- 36:53year span, I, I, there's very few people that can be compared
- 36:58to Albert Bell. That man should be in the Hall
- 37:00of Fame. Don Mattingly should be in the
- 37:01Hall of Fame. Keith Hernandez should be in the
- 37:04Hall of Fame. And those guys I just mentioned
- 37:07didn't. We're not accused for steroids,
- 37:09but Mike Piazza, even though he was never accused and there were
- 37:14a lot of people that questioned Jeff Bagwell, another guy with
- 37:17big forearms, just completely shrunk after his career.
- 37:21He's in the Hall of Fame. I mean, I could go on and on and
- 37:25on of guys that are in the Hall of Fame right now that shouldn't
- 37:28be there and because they were not finger pointed because I
- 37:32don't know. But Seeley didn't like Alex
- 37:34Rodriguez, was not too fond of him as a player.
- 37:37He would never allow him to go to the Hall of Fame.
- 37:39I think it's just a joke. And I think obviously the
- 37:42commissioners, you know, baseball and I'm not going to
- 37:45say anything because I say enough on this show, but I I
- 37:48tell the truth. I think the fact here is when
- 37:51you watch baseball and if you love the game of baseball, you
- 37:54have to understand greatness and greatness.
- 37:57I don't think we'll ever see an Alex Rodriguez again.
- 37:59I don't think we'll ever see a Barry Bonds again.
- 38:02I don't think we'll ever see Roger Clemens again.
- 38:04So how are they not in the Hall of Fame?
- 38:07It makes no sense. You need Andy Pettitte did human
- 38:11growth hormones to stay on the field, and he will never be
- 38:14inducted into the Hall of Fame. He's one of the greatest playoff
- 38:16pitchers we've ever seen. OK, It's pathetic.
- 38:19And I just think baseball, Bud Selig allowed it, and he's in
- 38:23the Hall of Fame. Why aren't these guys in the
- 38:25Hall of Fame? And he allowed it, and he knew
- 38:27what was going on. So that's just my opinion.
- 38:30But touché, Mr. Winkler, we love you, man.
- 38:33Let's get you on the show again. I'll have Nathan reach out to
- 38:37you. I'll have Speedy reach out to
- 38:39you. But you gave us some some great
- 38:41takes. And if you ever decide to come
- 38:43back to the major leagues, make sure that we're the first show
- 38:46that you interview with because you know, we got the
- 38:49personalities like Droba, as we always say.
- 38:53Droba Ass Liquor. He is.
- 38:55The Ass Liquor is not on the show tonight, but one of these
- 38:58days when you come on next, you'll get to have a
- 39:01conversation with Mr. Ass Liquor himself.
- 39:03But we love you. Keep up the good work and Merry
- 39:06Christmas. Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa.
- 39:08Whatever you celebrate, say hello to the family and we'll
- 39:11talk to you soon, buddy. Merry Christmas, Dan.
- 39:13We'll do. Appreciate y'all, thanks for
- 39:14having me. On Daniel Winkler, ladies and
- 39:17gentlemen, his take to the Hall of Fame, steroids and steroids
- 39:22players should be in the Hall of Fame.
- 39:23I absolutely agree with them. Interesting take to it.
- 39:27And this is a guy that was in the he's been in the game over
- 39:31the last five to 10 years. So he's a player that is been
- 39:35around it and understands it and has seen the situation for what
- 39:39it is. And why is David Ortiz in the
- 39:42Hall of Fame when he was on the Mitchell list?
- 39:44Why is he in the Hall of Fame? Because he was loved.
- 39:47He was beloved. Come on, guys, let let's be
- 39:50honest here. It just doesn't make any sense
- 39:52whatsoever. How, how baseball and how these
- 39:56writers make a choice or make a decision.
- 39:58Well, you know, I like him. And you heard we've had Hulk on
- 40:02the show and Hulk is going to be voting now.
- 40:04And he already said he will put Barry Bonds, Rodger Clemens,
- 40:07Alex Rodriguez all in the Hall of Fame.
- 40:09Alex Rodriguez is the top three player of all time.
- 40:12Of all time. And I loved Alex Rodriguez, I
- 40:17don't care what the fan said about him.
- 40:19I met Alex. Alex was very gracious.
- 40:21He had a great personality and he understands the game.
- 40:24He loves the game. He was.
- 40:26And Derek Jeter on that and I, we will talk more about this
- 40:29next week, but Derek Jeter said on that documentary, who was on
- 40:33that documentary? Very surprised Derek Jeter
- 40:35agreed to be on that documentary.
- 40:37Derek Jeter was there practically every episode and
- 40:40spoke very highly of Alex Rodriguez.
- 40:44There were some things that he said before and after the
- 40:47situation, the arguments and, and, and why they at one point
- 40:52we're not talking to each other. But Derek Jeter said one very
- 40:55interesting thing about Alex Rodriguez that I think fans need
- 40:58to understand. Alex was never a beloved player
- 41:04because in in New York, in the New York Yankees fans minds, he
- 41:09wasn't a Yankee. But he said what Alex Rodriguez
- 41:12did in the time that he was at the top of his game.
- 41:17I don't think you'll ever see a Yankee do that again.
- 41:20So, and that's from Derek Jeter, a person that had his UPS and
- 41:24his downs with a rod and, and, and now I guess are still
- 41:27friends with each other and they work on a fox with each other.
- 41:31And I think Alex Rodriguez is the best analyst in the in the
- 41:35game right now as far as going breaking down baseball and
- 41:39understanding the game of baseball.
- 41:41He's the guy I want to listen to on that panel.
- 41:43I don't want to hear David Ortizio.
- 41:44I I sometimes don't understand what he's saying.
- 41:46And I don't want to hear Derek Jeter because as good as Derek
- 41:48Jeter was as a player, he never explained himself like a player
- 41:54would try to explain a a specific statistic or a play on
- 42:00the field. Alex Rodriguez gives you the
- 42:02exes in the OS and he understands the game a little
- 42:04bit better. I think he'd be a great manager.
- 42:06I think he'd be a great owner. He's an owner right now with the
- 42:08Timberwolves and I think Alex Rodriguez deserves a little bit
- 42:12more credit then Yankee fans really give them.
- 42:15And that's why I wrote that story.
- 42:16Go check it out on the Worldwide Sports Radio Network.
- 42:18And I checked out Alex versus a rod.
- 42:22It's kind of sad the way Alex Rodriguez was portrayed by fans.
- 42:27And I feel bad that the way Alex Rodriguez felt about himself
- 42:32from all his trials and tribulations and all the
- 42:34problems he's had with his family and, you know, his father
- 42:38leaving him and just feeling uncomfortable being in his shoes
- 42:42as a player, I felt bad for him. It really is.
- 42:45I heard, you know, I'm sure Jabba, who knows Alex a little
- 42:48bit better than we do, has his own take to it.
- 42:51And I'm going to, I'm interested to hear what Jabba is going to
- 42:53say when we do speak about this because he was there when Alex
- 42:58Rodriguez had that run in 2009. He was a part of that team.
- 43:02And he saw the greatness of Alex Rodriguez when he came back and
- 43:05he dominated. And remember, the Yankees at
- 43:07that time, they were one of the worst teams in the American
- 43:11League when Alex Rodriguez came back from that hip surgery.
- 43:13And if it wasn't for Alex Rodriguez making that run, he
- 43:16was. The Yankees won 70% of their
- 43:19games when Alex Rodriguez came back that year in 2009.
- 43:22Just think about it, 70% when a rod came back.
- 43:26So it's it's a pretty, pretty amazing statistic when you're
- 43:30you're comparing greatness to a player and what one player in
- 43:34baseball could do to a team as we see what's going on with
- 43:37Aaron Judge. By the way, thank you to all the
- 43:39fans tuning in and listening to us.

- 44:48Vendetta, because I'm sure he has a vendetta for the New York
- 44:52Mets, I'm sure. Good movie.
