- 0:17Hello, and welcome to another episode of Breaking Mayberry the podcast. It's just
- 0:21as good as you, damn it, just as good as you, even
- 0:24though pod disowned me, even though we never said who I was just as
- 0:29good. Just like you gotta right to this name. We gotta right to
- 0:34the name Breaking Mayberry, and I have the right to the name. Marty
- 0:37Schneider. I'm one of your hosts. I'm your bastard son, Dan Ludwig.
- 0:44That's right. I've come to get what's mine and with us today is
- 0:50the cute brainy one who will be written out of the show eight episodes in
- 0:55Adam Terris. Hey, gentlemen, thanks for having me. If one of
- 1:00you is Heath, the bastard Sun and Marty, who would you be?
- 1:04I guess If if Dan's Heath, then I'm Nick? Are you Nick?
- 1:08Hold on? This is too? Does that mean that I'm Jared? I
- 1:15mean, you guys can tell these people about Can I just put this into
- 1:19play? And we haven't even talked about the show that we're talking about,
- 1:21but I imagine that the title of this episode would indicate this. Can I
- 1:25just put into this the suggestion box? I would like to be Victoria,
- 1:30all right? We would all like to be Victoria. It's an aspiration,
- 1:34silver Fox. I was into it. I know Audre is there for the
- 1:41gays, and I don't mean like the plural, but you know, the
- 1:45patriarchal ze gays, but also a little bit there for the gays. Actually,
- 1:49you know what, Audre, I hope all of them a little bit
- 1:52for the camp gies. Yeah, but Victoria was I'm getting ahead of myself.
- 1:56Thank you very much for letting me be on the show again. Um,
- 2:00multiple times I've been on the show. It is my distinct privilege,
- 2:02and I have felt like every single time I've walked away from a recording session
- 2:06with both of you, I've made you want to end the show or consider
- 2:10not putting out what we recorded. So I'm happy to be here on my
- 2:15best behavior and to watch a show that my dad likes. Adam, every
- 2:17time I'm with you, I feel like not putting out all right, party,
- 2:23straining against your pure chaos energy to try to keep us within three tangents.
- 2:30Everybody knows that I am known as the nicest joker, for example,
- 2:37to bring home to mom for example, assholes, it's been two minutes,
- 2:43like two or three minutes and if you're still listening, let me explain to
- 2:45you what's going on. We are in the middle of one of our miniseries,
- 2:50one of the two mini series we have going on. This is another
- 2:52episode of Parental Control, a show where we bring people on and ask them
- 2:57to tell us about a show that there was their parents' favorite when their parents
- 3:01were young, was their parents' favorite when they were young, or is their
- 3:06parents' favorite show now? And So Adam Terris, who I think is our
- 3:09first and maybe only three time guest, whoa, I'm the Steve Martin of
- 3:15this podcast. Yeah, you're you're you're only three peete here ye, Adam
- 3:21has brought us The Big Valley. The Big Valley a Western drama series from
- 3:27that aired from nineteen sixty five to nineteen sixty nine on ABC. Uh.
- 3:31Sort of seems like it was the precursor to Dynasty and Dallas and I think
- 3:38probably ran alongside gun Smoke, but kind of like all of those like western
- 3:44dramas and I guess now Yellowstone, Yeah, all of those like family western
- 3:47dramas, This was kind of the precursor, the first one of those bad
- 3:52boys. So, Adam, why did you bring us The Big Valley.
- 3:57Well, for the record, this was not my first pick. My first
- 4:00pick was, uh, the Osbournes. You know, my dad loved that
- 4:03growing up. Um My dad is Benjamin Button, and he watched a lot
- 4:09of The Osbourne's, the reality TV with Ozzie and Sharon Um and the other
- 4:16two. And Uh, I really wanted to watch the Osbournes. I thought
- 4:20it might mess with your timeline of like old shows because parents are old.
- 4:26This isn't So I didn't. I didn't. I didn't go with that one.
- 4:29I mean much more within our wheelhouse, the Osbourne's Son, because we
- 4:36did just do episodes on Supernatural and Stargate SG one, So that okay,
- 4:42well that fit well. So my next my second pick, actually my fallback
- 4:46would have been Man versus Beast my you know, my mom loved that growing
- 4:50up. I think that came out in two thousand and seven, and that
- 4:54was the one where the professional eater Kobe Ashi had a hot dog eating content
- 5:00against a bear bear. What the fuck are you talking about? Adam,
- 5:03Adam, Adam, what are you doing? You would, Adam? You
- 5:06and I talked about this episode for weeks. Weeks. We had multiple comments
- 5:13and at no point in time. Did you bring either of these to my
- 5:15attention? What the fuck? Adam? Well? Who hold on? Who
- 5:18have I been emailing about Man Versus Beasts? Adam? Is each episode Kobyashi
- 5:25trying to have an eating contest against a different animal, know you, fool?
- 5:30Okay, it's the same animal every time. It's always it's always him
- 5:33versus the bear. They just change out the food. He really lost that
- 5:40raw salmon contest. Let me tell you he lost that. Man of the
- 5:44episodes was a navy a Navy seal in an obstacle course against a chimpanzee.
- 5:48One of an episode was kobi Ashi versus a bear in an eating competition.
- 5:55And I know I remember one of them was someone raised a draft, but
- 5:58I don't. I'm sure you know a very fast person tried to raise a
- 6:00draff. And I know there were other episodes. And I'm telling you my
- 6:04mom and dad, they grew up with it. They talk about it all
- 6:06the time. Their best years are behind them. Because Man Versus Beast is
- 6:12off the air, and Man Versus Beast came out in two thousand and three,
- 6:16Jesus Christ. So I'm going to imagine, based off of the premise,
- 6:20the animals probably had a one win ratio, right, I am almost
- 6:26certain, and don't quote me here that in every episode at the end off
- 6:30camera every human being was killed by it. And don't again, don't quote
- 6:38me here. R I p Kobiashibi must win the eating contest or he has
- 6:44to fight the bear. Can I just part the veil? All of this
- 6:46is bs, of course, but I'm looking at the Man versus Beast Wikipedia
- 6:51entry and all of the competitions one, two, three, four, five,
- 6:56five competitions are listed in the wiki. I'm not sure if this is
- 7:00aprehensive or just a piece. And all of the people are named, athletes
- 7:06are named, except for and I quote a group of forty four dwarves lost
- 7:12a race against an Asian elephant and a sumo wrestler lost a tug of that.
- 7:17You know, the sumo wrestler has a name, and it bothers me
- 7:19that he's not named in the wiki. And whoever is listening to this episode
- 7:25and worked on Man Versus Beast and I know you're out there, I need
- 7:30you to edit the wiki. Why would you ever assume that forty four dwarves
- 7:35could beat the elephant? Yeah, everything, everything elsean horse scenario. Did
- 7:40they have like did they have like like a Volkswagen they were shriving? It
- 7:45says here in parentheses, Um, it was a trojan horse. So yeah,
- 7:49it turns out, if anything, I would place the little people at
- 7:55a massive disadvantage in this. Why why are there forty four of that?
- 8:00What difference does that make? Are they all operating a giant mechanical elephant and
- 8:03like three of them were in the legs and like for them? Yeah?
- 8:07Am serious of levers and pulleys that they were working on? Well, it
- 8:11says a group of forty four dwarfs lost a race against an Asian elephant.
- 8:16Why would they win? Would even think they would win? This? Will?
- 8:20This explains a lot, but it says in parentheses, the forty four
- 8:22dwarfs were formed like Vultron. They had a mecha Godzilla situation going. So,
- 8:28I mean I think that kind of explains everything everything else. Yeah,
- 8:33okay, su Sumo wrestler wins it. You know, tug of war against
- 8:35a gorilla? All right, sure, I can see why you would think
- 8:37that's a challenge everything. Hell, what what the hell? It was?
- 8:43It was an orangutang who was also not named, And I think this sucks.
- 8:48I'm I am upset and I need the wiki to be edited. Ud.
- 8:54I mean this episode is because it ended with a fatality. Right.
- 9:01There was one thing where like, oh, this guy's going to going to
- 9:03raise a cheetah in the hurdle contest, and then the cheetah just ripped his
- 9:07face off. It was a zebra, you fool. Yeah, he's someone
- 9:13did race a zebra. That was Sean Crawford, world class sprinter one hundred
- 9:18meter race against a draft, and he won, but he lost to the
- 9:22zebra, which is surprising. Zebras are kind of tubby. Anyway, thanks
- 9:26for having me on the show. The show that I chose that my dad
- 9:31truly genuinely actually grew up with and loves is the show The Big Valley.
- 9:39And to explain why I chose that show, I have a vivid memory,
- 9:43or maybe a series of vivid memories of my dad having the time of his
- 9:48life watching Big Valley episodes on our very small kitchen TV. And every time
- 9:56he's having a great time, and every time he puts on Big Valley,
- 9:58my mom simply won't have it, can't be in the room with it.
- 10:01It's clear that she has endured many hours, and I do mean hours,
- 10:07because Big Valley turns out that's prestige TV in nineteen sixty five. There's so
- 10:13long, hour long episodes. They go on forever. So my mom absolutely
- 10:16could not be in the room while Big Valley was on. I can't share
- 10:20that interest with my dad. But my dad loves Big Valley. And in
- 10:26spite of that dynamic and my mom having that big reaction and my dad having
- 10:31so much fun watching the show, I have never not once sat with my
- 10:35dad to watch the show. And in truth, Marty Papa, I'm feeling
- 10:39a little guilty about that, and I thought, what a terrific opportunity to
- 10:46correct my errors, my arrogance. I think I probably turned him down at
- 10:50least once. Instead of watching a Big Valley, I probably watched Man Versus
- 10:54Beast? So is your dad gonna listen to this episode? A thousand percent?
- 11:01And I will say, okay, I just want to say personally to
- 11:05you, my father, everything I said in the beginning was a joke.
- 11:09I didn't mean any of it. I don't think you've ever seen or heard
- 11:11of the Osburns and I pulled that out of my hat. It wasn't that
- 11:16funny. So I did choose me, so you switch. You flip that
- 11:18on us, Yeah, you flip that on us. As I have said
- 11:24many times to you, Adam, sometimes sometimes it's hard to tell when you're
- 11:28doing a bit. You're you're so deadpan. Sometimes it's hard to tell when
- 11:31you're doing a bit or when you're telling me something actually, and it makes
- 11:35it hard to be your friend. I am known as the funny joker,
- 11:39is what they referred to me. As you could have a funny chaos.
- 11:43I feel like you could deliver the news that my family was dead and just
- 11:48maintained the exact same tone throughout the whole thing. Hey, Dan, bad
- 11:52news. Your family entered into a competition against an orangutang. It was a
- 11:58tug of war petition, which, by the way, is dangerous. Don't
- 12:01look it up. Don't don't don't try to authenticate this claim. Don't look
- 12:05at up this dangerous anyway. Both of your parents are were ripped off simultaneously
- 12:11with one big tug. Yeah. They were helping forty four dwarfs form Bolt
- 12:16Run and it didn't work out. For strangely, only your parents all forty
- 12:20four dwarfs just fine and it's probably something to do with the fact that they
- 12:22were protected by a mex suit. Yes, okay, So so what is
- 12:28the show about. Your dad loves this show, Tell your mom your mom
- 12:33hates this show. I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you what The Big Valley is
- 12:35about. The Big Valley is about a rich, wealthy ranching family in Stockton
- 12:43in the eighteen hundreds, eighteen forty four or eighteen eighty four to eighteen eighty
- 12:48eight. Uh. It's about these three or four brothers, depending on how
- 12:54you look at things. Uh. Their names are Jared, Jared and Nick
- 13:01are the main characters. There's one like law man brother. He's he wears
- 13:05a suit and he's a lawyer, reasonable man. He's the reasonable, straightforward
- 13:11one who goes who wants things for law. And then there's Nick and Nick
- 13:13is the root and tooting, shooting cowboy guy. Yeah. And they're joined
- 13:18by a third man, Heath, played by six million dollar man Lee Majors.
- 13:24Yeah. Lee Majors, that's right. Yeah. And Heath might be
- 13:28their fathers, their late father's bastard son. That's what the first episode is
- 13:33about. That's right. They're introduced to Heath, who comes to work for
- 13:37the ranch and then reveals I'm the I might be your bastard son. Uh.
- 13:43And they also have They also have a sister who, as far as
- 13:46I can tell, is there to be hot. Well hold on, let's
- 13:48just say Audre. Audre is this sister, and she is hot. And
- 13:54Audre kicks Heath's butt, you know, sees Heath crouching by their father's tombstone
- 14:01Thomas Barkley rip and um and really just whips the shit out of him.
- 14:05And I was surprised by her vigor beating a man she had not. I
- 14:13thought they were going to have a twist where it's like, oh you and
- 14:16they're tussling around and having fun being flirty, and it wasn't that. She
- 14:20she really truly was just whooping them. Yeah, and they are. This
- 14:24family is led by their matriarch, Barbara Stanwick, who we've talked about before
- 14:31on this show, as as Victoria Barkley. So Barbara. The last time
- 14:37we saw her, she was also tending over a group of young men in
- 14:43the Charlie's Angels episode Tony's Boys. That's right, Actually, can we get
- 14:48a show called Tony's Boys? Oh no, no, you can't. You
- 14:54can't. We we've gone over the myriad reasons why you can't. This is
- 14:56a previous episode. So we did. We did two episodes. We watched
- 15:03the first episode that ever existed, and then we kind of we literally Adam
- 15:07and I rolled the dice on this one. We went to tell him why,
- 15:11tell the audience why. We went to like the list of worst episodes
- 15:16of The Big Valley, which is just according to IMDb ratings, so it's
- 15:20not like particularly why. But Adam Good got out a D twenty a die
- 15:28and he rolled it and he said, whatever, this land's on, We're
- 15:31gonna do that episode. And so I sat next to him and we rolled
- 15:35it and it got like a seven. He goes, okay, let's look
- 15:37at the list of number seven. And the list of number seven was all
- 15:39women are lying horse, Okay, Like it centered around like a false rape
- 15:46accusation. Yes, And we said roll the dice again, yeah, and
- 15:52so we did and we got uh season three, episode twenty six, which
- 15:58is called the Challenge, and we'll get to that in a second, but
- 16:00let's go ahead and talk about season one, episode one, the premiere of
- 16:04The Big Valley, which is called what is it? Palms? Of gold
- 16:07or something like that, with open palms or something, Palms of glory.
- 16:12I was close with Palms of glory. Then I have no idea what the
- 16:15hell that means, but it's funny. I thought it was supposed to be
- 16:18Psalms of glory. Shut. It's not that I would have made sense.
- 16:26Palms of Glory Originally air September fifteenth, nineteen sixty five, written by Christopher
- 16:30Nooff, directed by Willem Graham, and here's your one centen summary from Wikipedia.
- 16:36As the railroad brings in gunmen to force the ranchers and farmers off of
- 16:41their land, the Barkley family leads a fight against the railroad comma, while
- 16:45a mysterious and angry young man arrives Comma, claiming to be the son of
- 16:49the late Tom Barkley. This could have been a two centen summary, Wikipedia
- 16:53editor. We're getting real up on these Wikipedia editors in this episode, leading
- 16:59to get their shit together there. But yeah, it's a sixty minute show,
- 17:02so they need to fill time. So there it is. There's your
- 17:03two plots. Uh, there's you know, we're talking about land rights forever.
- 17:10Uh. And then also a guy shows up and he's pissed off and
- 17:12he's mad. You you're this rich family and he's your bastard, your bastard
- 17:18relative. Yes, yes, let's talk about let's talk about this first episode,
- 17:22Palms of glory. I gotta say, the way that this episode opens
- 17:26rules, Yes, it does rule. Yeah, I'm so glad that you
- 17:30said that. It's This episode is very uneven. It's very up and down.
- 17:34How interested in it I am? But this this intro kicks ass.
- 17:40Yeah. So I mean, without without divulging full details, will divulge.
- 17:45I Well, I'll just say, you know, my my summary of my
- 17:48experience from watching both episodes. I wasn't sure what to expect. I expected,
- 17:52I suppose that I would be bored from the show. I just expected
- 17:57that to be the case. I mostly was not board. But the opening
- 18:02scene of the pilot, the opening scene of the first episode, where both
- 18:07men who at this point we do not know the names of, enter opposite
- 18:11sides of a narrow bridge, have a conversation about their respective ponies and how
- 18:18their horses cannot back up, their great horses, but they can't back up,
- 18:22and then they were going to have a shootout, and while reaching for
- 18:26their their pistols. The bridge collapse. I didn't see that coming, gents,
- 18:33Yeah, I didn't see that coming. The bridge does collapse. You
- 18:34could hear the bridge creaking through the entire scene. That's correct. Yeah,
- 18:38And I wondered, is this just how it went in the sixties where you
- 18:44gotta you take the footage you can get, and maybe it just happens to
- 18:47be creaky. That's really loud creaky. But neither of the actors, neither
- 18:52character acknowledges the creaking, which is why it caught me off guard that it
- 18:56does collapse in a wide shot, and both of the horses and their fellas
- 19:03plunge into a river and then they swim to their respective sides. It was
- 19:07nutty and I just didn't I didn't know what to do at that point.
- 19:11There was no editing, trickery or like a special effects wizardry. They put
- 19:18two horses on a bridge and two guys on those horses, and then they
- 19:22pulled a board away that caused that bridge to collapse into a river. The
- 19:26two horses fell into a river with two guys on them, and I am
- 19:30not confident in the safety procedures that were taken. It looks like that could
- 19:34have gone pretty bad because those horses were not happy about that development. I
- 19:40mean that became Lee Major's thing, right, Like Lee Majors was definitely like
- 19:44a like a falling off of bridges while we're or riding on a horse.
- 19:48Yeah, you gotta love this. I had to work it in that he
- 19:52falls into a bridge on a horse. So we got three hundred episodes in
- 19:56which Steve Austin is on a horse on a bridge. That's interesting stuff.
- 20:03Funny thing. They spent seven million dollars on the horse. WHOA, Now
- 20:07that's a man versus beast. I would like to see no Lee Majors with
- 20:15a stunt guy like he would go and he'd do the he do the Tom
- 20:18Cruise thing of putting himself in dangerous situation for no reason. Um, except
- 20:22back then they didn't really have seven forty seven. They just had horses.
- 20:29They had seven seven horses. Okay, I'm sitting by that. You wanted
- 20:33to do a stunt back then, you had to do something related to a
- 20:37horse, especially mid air. If you wanted to be in a plane,
- 20:41it had to be a horse had to be a horse. Don't know how
- 20:42that works, but it had to be again horses vultron together. That's how
- 20:47you made a plane back again from again. From the Tony's Boys episode,
- 20:52we've learned that one horse and a rope can beat the ship out of a
- 20:55plane. I know how that man versus versus beast ends. I really want
- 20:59to that Tony's voice. Um. So yeah, that's the beginning of the
- 21:03episode. And then we're introduced to this show and I'm by at this point
- 21:07and the and the big Valley like theme plays and I don't remember how it
- 21:11goes. I'm just going to do the magnificent seventh theme bump bump bump,
- 21:14bump, bump bump bump bum bomb, And I'm like, I'm so on
- 21:17board right now. I'm very on board. And then the next scene is
- 21:22like a very long discussion of land rights and legal battle on a train,
- 21:26and I'm like, I am not on board right now. And then it's
- 21:29like we're gonna do a train versus a horse, and I'm like, I'm
- 21:32on board right now, and then more talking about land rights and so land
- 21:37rights discussion is so boring just because it is so simple, but these dipshits
- 21:42have to explain it to each other in detail, where it's like, so
- 21:47the trained company is going to use a legal bullshit to steal a bunch of
- 21:51farmers land. Can they do that legally? Yes? But how like?
- 21:56And then they just explain law and land to each other. But then at
- 22:02the end somebody's like, oh, hell yeah, and then everybody rushes to
- 22:04the window like like schoolboys to see a guy trying to raise a train on
- 22:10a horse. I did like that because I liked seeing Jared and the other
- 22:15fella adding their wagers over time and saying, I bet you one hundred dollars
- 22:21he's gonna beat this train. No, I'll bet you one hundred and fifty.
- 22:25And you have to imagine that the person who is betting against the horse
- 22:30being able to cross the train was betting money on everyone being showered in the
- 22:34blood of a cowboy and a horse. And that's grim when you think about
- 22:40it. They were excitedly standing where they would have been the first to be
- 22:44hit with the big horse heart and the parts of the man, and he
- 22:49was saying, I'm gonna collect me a payday while wiping the gore from his
- 22:55face, And I was just thinking, what a strange outcome you're hoping for?
- 22:59Sir, I'll bet you one hundred dollars. We're about to see a
- 23:00horse get absolutely powdered by a train. My god, dared, I can't
- 23:06wait to taste the blood of this horse. And man, oh, it's
- 23:11gonna taste like your money, Jared gets gonna taste like your money. Blood
- 23:18is gonna be uh, not quite as red as the blood we've shed fighting
- 23:22for our land. The Barcleys deserve this plot of like it was a It's
- 23:26a very dense conversation about things that aren't compelling, and then a man raises
- 23:30a horse, and I feel like that's kind of um the summary of the
- 23:33whole show, right, They're they're not compelling steaks, but also a man
- 23:37raises a horse, And in both episodes we watched, there is a protracted
- 23:41fight scene amongst a lot of not much um, and I feel like that's
- 23:48the energy the show is packing. This is a question I have. Are
- 23:51the Barclays at risk of losing their land? It kind of seems like the
- 23:53Barkleys are fine. It's just other people around them are gonna lose their land
- 23:59because seems like the Barkleys are Barkleys are doing fucking great they's guy. Barkeleys
- 24:04are flush with cash, and it made me kind of sit there and go,
- 24:07I don't give a shit if you lose your land or not. Man,
- 24:08But it's like it's like all the people around them are losing shit.
- 24:11Barkeleys are kind of like the Batman of the Big Valley. Well, and
- 24:15and so and so the and so this is how we're our characters are introduced,
- 24:21right, Uh, Heath, Heath is the like guy. Heath is
- 24:25not on the train. Yet we don't need Heath. I think he was
- 24:27the guy racing the train. R right, he races the train. So
- 24:30but so. Heath is introduced to Nick where they have a dick measuring contest
- 24:36on the bridge that doesn't work out for any of them. Heath is introduced
- 24:38to Jared when Jared sees him racing a train that Jared is on, and
- 24:45Heath is introduced to Audre when Audre kicks the shit out of him. Yeah,
- 24:48and I like that. Heath shows up and he's like, man,
- 24:53I've had such a hard time getting here. I fell into a goddamn river
- 24:56then I had to ride it. Like, He's not like who I rode
- 25:00in front of a train today? He was like I had to ride in
- 25:03front of a train. Like he's talking about merging onto the highway. He's
- 25:07like a fucking like there was an accident on seventy six. Yeah. Yeah,
- 25:14this is cowboy time dance, So merging like racing a train, is
- 25:18basically putting a cover on your TPS report. This is just tough stuff for
- 25:22a cowboy like him. Um or maybe not tough stuff. I can't tell,
- 25:26but yeah, he does have an interesting disposition he I found him sweet
- 25:30and affectionate and curious and also a weird guy. I couldn't get a beat
- 25:37on him by the end of the first episode, and I liked him a
- 25:40lot. In the next episode we watched, which by the way, was
- 25:44season three episode twenty six. Oh yeah, the very last episode, also
- 25:48the last episode of season three. Goodness. So he eventually makes his way
- 25:53to the ranch. We eventually make our way to the ranch. I have
- 25:56to point this out, Um Nick Nick reunite with Jared and they go back
- 26:00to the ranch together. But on the way there, look, guys,
- 26:04I know that this is our thing, right, I know that stuff from
- 26:08the sixties doesn't just don't say it though. Oh I'm gonna I'm gonna have
- 26:15to say it because this dude, this dude, I know that stuff doesn't
- 26:18really age well. But he walks onto the train, sees like a Chinese
- 26:22railow worker and goes something like, ming you ugly Oriental and I go you
- 26:30ugly mandering, and I go, Jesus, yours was worse. Yeah,
- 26:33geez that, I go Jesus. But then here's the thing. Nick does
- 26:37this like two or three more times. He has like three scenes in a
- 26:41row where he walks into an area, sees a friendly minority, insults them
- 26:47to their face. He's like he does this and this scene. The next
- 26:48scene he's like, why you ugly Mexican, And then he sees their their
- 26:52major Domo who is a former slave, and you can tell he's going,
- 26:56Benson, you ugly, and you can sell that like maybe he got the
- 27:00end, like maybe he like his mouth was forming it and someone was like,
- 27:03Nope, can't do that one, No, No, it's it's his
- 27:07Did I do that? It's so weird because it comes in rapid succession.
- 27:12It sucks. I mean the bottom the bottom line is it sucks. And
- 27:17I know this is kind of the thing that the two of you navigate time
- 27:21and time again watching these shows and seeing these things so casually entertaining. That
- 27:26sucks and it bums me out a lot. The characterization, I am sure
- 27:33is we are seeing that Nick is the rough, the vulgar guy, the
- 27:38rowdy, reckless one, and sure, job done, I guess, but
- 27:45I'm it's sure everybody feels the same way as Nick, whether or not they
- 27:48say it out loud, which is so weird because there's no other reason for
- 27:52that the Chinese character or the Mexican character to be in the scene, like
- 27:57they basically add nothing. The Chinese worker doesn't even have a line, so
- 28:02they're basically just there for that to happen. It's so weird and so like
- 28:07off Pudding, and I just it sucks. It sucks a lot, especially
- 28:11because like I'm sitting there, like I want to like these guys and I
- 28:14want to like this show, but man, oh that hurts that one.
- 28:18Victoria never said one foul word, yeah, and we protect her, So
- 28:25I do have to say that. The character Silas is the name of the
- 28:30Barclays major Domo, the They're butler who works in several episodes. This is
- 28:34according to the Wikipedia. In several episodes, his character showed the trauma of
- 28:38slavery life for blacks after the Civil War and meaning in his own work for
- 28:44the family. So that character's whole deal is, man, slavery was bad.
- 28:48It's it's really good that I'm not a slave anymore. Instead, I'm
- 28:51just your servant and your butler. This is so much better. And I've
- 28:53got a feeling that that's not handled well. I'm not going to touch those
- 28:57episodes. The name is Napoleon Whiting, possibly Witting, and I don't know
- 29:04if either of you have seen the movie Giant, but I've I've seen the
- 29:08movie Giant, and he's in that as well with Rock, husband of Rock
- 29:12Hudson, James Dean. Okay, yeah, I anticipate at least one scene
- 29:18of him going like, listen, you guys, can't beat yourself up about
- 29:22this. You weren't there, give you let yourself off the hook. So
- 29:27so there it is. We got that unpleasantry out of the way. We
- 29:30had to address it. But man, it's just it's so weird how it
- 29:33happens one right after the other. It's so bizarre. Uh, it's bad,
- 29:37it's not. But honestly, and after that though, for the most
- 29:41part, not much, not that bad, uh jed, bearing in mind,
- 29:45of course, that we did need to reroll the Dice because there were
- 29:48many episodes that looked pretty rough. So, you know, I want to
- 29:53give a lot of credit to Big Value because I enjoyed watching it. But
- 29:57I bet if we had watched some of the these other episodes, like the
- 30:02episode titled The Emperor of Rice, I don't know if we would be espousing
- 30:07their um their courtesy. Yeah, well you know, so here we are.
- 30:14So we got that out of the way. The rest of the episode
- 30:17is it's basically set up right. I don't even really think we need to
- 30:19run scene by scene for this. He shows up, he starts working at
- 30:23the at the ranch for like ten minutes, and the others are immediately suspicious,
- 30:30particularly Nick. They have a big fight in the like bunk house,
- 30:34in the barn. Yeah, in the barn. They have a big fight
- 30:37about it. Um, they have a big fight that goes all over the
- 30:41property. Yeah yeah, yeah, it's a real they live say. Yeah,
- 30:47they're just trading single punches for like twelve minutes. It's a pretty good
- 30:52fight for a TV fight. Yeah, for a TV I mean, there
- 30:55they are flipping backwards over stuff. They're crashing through things. It really looked
- 31:00like they tussled, and you know, I'm not saying that it was well
- 31:04choreographed, but not a lot of cuts. They're just swinging and that's pretty
- 31:10interesting to watch. You know. It's the kind of TV fight I like
- 31:14where both guys mostly just use the same arm and take turns punching each other.
- 31:19Watch just left hook, left hook, left hook, left hook.
- 31:23I'll say this between this fight and the late the shootout that happens later that
- 31:30Adam talked about a little bit. One thing I like about the action on
- 31:33the Big Valley is it's very raw. It's not polished. The big shootout
- 31:38that they have really looks like what I would imagine an actual West shootout to
- 31:42look like, because it's just like a bunch of guys and horses just kind
- 31:47of shuffling around trying not to get shot. Nothing's fancy, No one's blowing
- 31:51anybody's head off, like there's no cool things happening. It's just chaos and
- 31:53everyone's just kind of looking around wildly, just shooting there there there. I
- 32:00like Nanny. It is a gunpowder hoot. Nanny is a band that I
- 32:06would love to listen to what what what was the name of their hit song?
- 32:10Uh, their hit song was, um Cracker I was gonna say,
- 32:19I was gonna say Cracker Barrel, Jack Daniels at the Cracker Barrel. Yeah,
- 32:23Jack Daniels at the Cracker bar Yeah. I don't remember Jack Daniels at
- 32:28the Cracker Barrel by um that gunpowder, dude, gunpowder. Hoot Nanny is
- 32:34probably like one of those punk folk bands like Devil Makes Three. That is
- 32:39that's like really interesting the first time, and then you're like, all right,
- 32:45I'm sick of this stick like the Black Angels. I like the Black
- 32:47Angels for three minutes, and then after that it's like, Okay, this
- 32:52is this it I've seen. I've seen the Devil Makes Three in concert three
- 32:54times because oh hell, you should see the Devil Makes Four go on one
- 32:59more time. That gunfight I do love, and it includes my most favorite
- 33:04trope in any Western which is man falling off of roof. You cannot have
- 33:09a gunfight in the Wild West if you don't have a guy tumble off the
- 33:13roof. I don't know how he got up there. I don't know what
- 33:15he thought The plan was. Like he wasn't taking cover at any point in
- 33:19time, But he really did tumble off the roof, didn't he does.
- 33:22There's always like every guy that does this where he's like, I'm gonna climb
- 33:25up on this balcony with a pistol and this is gonna go great for me.
- 33:30I see no potential issues. Question. Does guy falling out of barn
- 33:36count yes? Okay, yeah, it has to be like a high location.
- 33:42Yeah, just gonna be a high location, you know, because they
- 33:44hired the actor to get that shot and he got it and I love his
- 33:50job. We're gonna I want to rank these really fast, because the best
- 33:53version of it is guy goes through railing after being shot thousand percent. Second
- 33:59one guy goes over railing after being shot. Okay, yeah sure, Then
- 34:05it's guy falls off roof and then guy falls out of bar. I think,
- 34:09where do we place? Where do we place? Guy falls from height
- 34:15and lands on top of a car, Because that's a that's one too.
- 34:20I'll tell you what's higher than dumpster? Right? Yes? Yeah, yeah,
- 34:23yeah, yeah, car higher than dumpster, but not as high as
- 34:29onto a moving bus or train. You survive if you do that? Sure
- 34:35to go back to Wild West. What about guy falls off and lands in
- 34:38water barrel? Oh class who boots boots in the sky? Yeah yeah,
- 34:45okay, going going down a floor from second floor to first floor window,
- 34:51out the window? Where do we count the classic? Right, Yeah,
- 34:53that's gonna be. That's gonna be Number one is this shot? Guy goes
- 34:58through a window or guy gets thrown out, guy gets defense trated. I
- 35:00think I gets thrown out of window. Also, yeah, someone used this
- 35:04is one of those rare times when guy gets thrown is better than guy gets
- 35:07shot, because if he's if he is properly defenistrated and tossed through the window,
- 35:12you can't beat that. If he is tossed through a window from a
- 35:15height and lands on an Accura, Now that's what I'm looking for. That's
- 35:19what I'm looking for. Guy falls off balcony, through guardrail, goes through
- 35:23window, lands in water barrel, water barrel, rolls onto and moving Accura.
- 35:30And what I've learned is if you go through all of those steps,
- 35:31it takes you to a new stage in moral comb. Do you guys know
- 35:36about the time that Charles Barkley threw a guy out a window? No,
- 35:39hold on, there's a fourth Barkley brother, Charles Barkley, whoa good one,
- 35:47yeah, Charles, Sir Charles, Charles Barkley, No, this this
- 35:51is a true story. Charles Barkley threw a guy out a club window and
- 35:55I think Atlanta. Um, yeah, he was in the club and there
- 36:00was this dude who was by the way, I'm gonna tell you right now,
- 36:02you're gonna be on Charles's side in this one. Okay. There was
- 36:06a dude at the club who was like harassing and groping women, and the
- 36:12security crew wasn't doing anything about it. So Charles quite literally took matters into
- 36:16his own hands and grabs the guy by the neck and throws him out the
- 36:20window. And at and at his arrangement hearing and I swear this is true.
- 36:29The judge asks Sir Charles if he has any regrets, and Sir Charles,
- 36:32in his Charles Barkley voice, goes, I regret that we were on
- 36:37the first floor. I'm glad that he said it in his Charles Barkley voice.
- 36:42And that is Mickey Mouse. Yeah. I wait until we find out
- 36:46what Charles Barkley's gonna do to Nick. When he learns what Nick said to
- 36:50silas for Christ's sakes, up, I'd love to see this. I would
- 36:54love to see him throw Nick from the second floor through a window, crashed
- 37:00through. What were the other things? Were said? Through a fence,
- 37:04water barrel, accurate moving for windows, stained glass windows window always good?
- 37:10Wow? Oh skylight window, Oh, skylights always good. Always more glass
- 37:22the better. And there's a car with a moon roof parked in the greenhouse.
- 37:25So he goes shatters through the roof. Are we are we? John
- 37:30wooing? It? Is there a bunch of doves? Like how many birds
- 37:34are disturbed by? Yeah? The doves were inside of the car and they
- 37:37were all killed. They were on their way to the wedding. When a
- 37:40guy gets shot in the hip, falls off a roof and then goes into
- 37:44a roof Goldberg machine And at the very end it makes breakfast for pee Wee
- 37:52Herman, the aristic. Every morning pee Wee Herman wakes up shoots a cowboy
- 38:04off a room. It's cowboy, Curtis. I that does make sense,
- 38:12and I want to agree with you because that makes sense, but I simply
- 38:15will not have it. You can't you can't shoot Colbert. Don't make people
- 38:17imagine cowboy Curtis getting shot. Surely, No, what the fuck are we
- 38:24doing here? We just skipped to the next episode. We can honestly,
- 38:29I think we can't because we've we've covered all the highlights here right this this
- 38:32is episode is just set up. Now. You know the deal, you
- 38:36know who the Barclays are, you know Heath whole deal, you know.
- 38:38Oh wait, hang on, There's one scene I got to talk about,
- 38:42and that is the scene where Audra tries to have sex with her brother.
- 38:50Yeah. Oh yeah, No. I wasn't sure if you were talking about
- 38:53how like not flirty their relationship was, And I was like, did I
- 38:57grossly misinterpret that scene? There? There is a scene where Audra rides her
- 39:01way into town. Uh, and she is and like some drunk guys going
- 39:07to uh, some drunk guys go to grow They go to assault her and
- 39:10then uh, Heath Barkley question Mark pulls a Charles Barkley acclamation point and kicks
- 39:19their ass and drag and they go back to his hotel room where he's staying
- 39:23and she comes on to him real hard. Yeah. And I didn't like
- 39:30how the law men appeared and said to Audra, I'm not going to hear
- 39:35your side of the story. You are going to tell your family and then
- 39:37I will hear it from your family. I didn't care for that. Um
- 39:40that was that was not good. Didn't like that. Shut I'm I wish
- 39:45he was thrown through a second floor window, smashed through a fence and it
- 39:51was the electric fence that holds the t Rex and the t from Jurassic Park,
- 39:57and the fence was not on, so he's not electrocuted, and guys,
- 40:00stop me. I fell asleep at the end of the episode. When
- 40:04I was watching the episode is quite late at night, and this is very
- 40:07much the preamble for the entire series. It is a little confusing because I
- 40:12know the pilot needs to sell people on the concept, and I guess they
- 40:15didn't need to sell much. They just you know, they had this show
- 40:20has an impressive budget, so like the money was just gonna do what the
- 40:24money do. And uh, while I was watching the episode, I fell
- 40:29asleep right through this. Okay, Audra does try to seduce Heath to be
- 40:35like well, to test him. Basically, He's like, She's like,
- 40:37well, if we're brother and sister, would we do this? And it's
- 40:44it's it's it's got a it's got a very like Riley read like, oh,
- 40:46we can't do this. I hear my stepfather kind of do it is
- 40:51Riley read one of the Barclays. I thought it was a weird casting choice.
- 40:57Can you imagine a porn hub video? And the title is my bastard
- 41:00brother just appeared in town and he was desecrating our father's grave. That is
- 41:07plus come shot my bastard brother has written, has come to town disguised as
- 41:15a ranch handed. Ohh, I'm trapped in the dryer. I kicked the
- 41:21ship out of my brother before I got to know who he was. The
- 41:25thing. I like it. So the entire thrust of the episode is them
- 41:29going like, uh, like, all the farmers are like, we need
- 41:30to use violence to protect our land, and the Barkley's being like, you
- 41:36can't do that, no, no one Barkley, Jared Barkley, you can't
- 41:42do that. It's against the law and it won't go well. And then
- 41:45the end is just all the farmers going like, we resisted with violence and
- 41:50it was awesome, ruled and worked so good. Yeah. Yeah, eventually
- 41:55they do resist with violence. Even Jared goes along with it. Jared get
- 41:59shot. Yeah. And by the way, there is another Barkley brother whose
- 42:04name is Eugene. There's like a third Barkley brother. He's like he's like
- 42:08the young kid, and he's the intellectual and he's like a poet and he
- 42:13really thinks about stuff. And eight episodes into the series, they said Eugene
- 42:16joined the army and never talked about him again. Who oh they that brother
- 42:22would have been the prototype for them. Have you seen the movie Power of
- 42:25the Dog. Yeah, he would have been that. Yeah, he would
- 42:29have been the power I know what point you're making this film. So they
- 42:34do this so that guy you don't need to worry about him. He basically
- 42:37just doesn't do I forgot he existed in this episode. And he's also yeah,
- 42:42and so they cut him out because you've already got too many guys.
- 42:45And we haven't really talked about Victoria. And I think we'll talk about Victoria
- 42:50more in this next episode next, So let's talk about this next episode,
- 42:52which is mostly Victoria. In fact, in fact, Adra isn't in this
- 42:58episode at all? Is she No? Okay, so we'll we'll forget about
- 43:00Audre. So now it's the army. Yeah, it's weird. It's see
- 43:07they just say that she's in New York for this episode, so oh yeah,
- 43:10that's right. They do area Season three, episode twenty six, The
- 43:15Challenge airs March eighteenth, nineteen sixty eight. Written by Virgil W. Vogel,
- 43:22Great name, directed by Mark no I hang, sorry, I'm sorry,
- 43:25directed by Virgil Vogel. Yeah, it was written by a woman,
- 43:29written by a woman, written by Margaret Arman. That's right, And here
- 43:34is your one sentence summary from Wikipedia. A senator comes to Stockton to campaign
- 43:39for reelection, but finds himself the target of a smear campaign that pulls Victoria
- 43:45in as well. All right, so let's do consensus on this episode.
- 43:50It's pretty good. I loved it, loved it. First episode. I
- 43:54was up and down on first episode. I was like, I know,
- 43:58But by the end I was like, I get the premise of this and
- 44:00I'm interested in what this, so I'll stick around for a little bit.
- 44:02This episode is like they're they're running pretty well on this. It's still it's
- 44:07still too much talking. It still should not be an hour long. Are
- 44:10you are you fellas looking at the IMDb? By chance? I am,
- 44:15um, do you want to drop a bomb about a secret cast member in
- 44:20this episode for the for this exact episode, no go for it, ye
- 44:23re just fill it. Yeah. He plays a nameless reporter that, by
- 44:30the way, is one of the things that the Big Valley, I guess
- 44:34was known for. One of the things in the Like Wikipedia is they've got
- 44:38an entire section of guest stars and it is one, two, three,
- 44:42four, five, six, seven eight columns long. And I recognize some
- 44:47of these names from from the Andy Griffith Show, like RG Armstrong. I
- 44:52recognize and Ron Howard and but also other names on here, like like Maco
- 44:58appears Maco Here's in here. Richard Dreyfus is on here, Bruce Dern,
- 45:04John Carradine of course, Leslie Nielsen, uh Wow, Rija Philbin is on
- 45:09this list, Carl Swenson is on here, Adam west is in is on
- 45:14this list. Charles Barkley Charles Barkley appears, uh so pretty much, and
- 45:20Yafat Kdo is in this is on this list. Diane Mark Lopoon from uh
- 45:25this from the Jedi, from the Star Wars, low Pan, Superman,
- 45:30every single Power Ranger, uh O Man as one guy. Okay, that's
- 45:39fair anyway, this episode is great. I thought it was a great episode,
- 45:45and even when I thought it was going one way, actually the entire
- 45:49time I thought it was going one way, and the episode managed to surprise
- 45:52me. So I can honestly say I did not know what was going to
- 45:57happen at any point in time, and I was bought in the entire time.
- 46:00In the ending, for me was a bit of a thinker. I
- 46:05don't know if this was on purpose or not, but it felt like it
- 46:07was truly making a statement about the the character of both sides when it comes
- 46:13to a political for sure. Yeah. But before we go into that again,
- 46:16say one more name from this list, Uh, Robert Loja? Yeah,
- 46:22which means the second time that Robert Loja and Barbara Stanwick appeared on a
- 46:27show together that we covered. So again back to is Robert also in Tony's
- 46:32Boys. You gotta watch Tony's Boys in the In the in the third column,
- 46:38it says Takiro Kobayashi, um professional eater. He came on to do
- 46:44an eating contest against a bear. Again, this is a very weird b
- 46:49plot against Senator BANNERD. That's weird. I guess that's how they elected people
- 46:53back then. So so this episode, Uh, a senator comes to town.
- 47:00He's already a senator and he is he a US senator or like California
- 47:04state senator. It doesn't really matter, but I want I think California State.
- 47:07He's a California State senator and he's campaigning and he comes to Stockton.
- 47:10Uh, and it's revealed that he and Victoria, the matriarch of the show,
- 47:16they were they're flirty. They used to have a thing. He used
- 47:20to have a thing before before she got married. Uh. And they're still
- 47:24like kind of into each other. It's pretty clear to literally everybody within a
- 47:30five mile radius, like, oh they these two want to bone They they
- 47:34sit down to dinner, and the senator, who's in a heated reelection race,
- 47:39rapidly it reveals himself to be a fucking psychopath and a wily He's just
- 47:45kind of like, well, I'm just a humble country psychopath. I have
- 47:52trouble controlling my violent impulses. If if this was made today, you would
- 47:58not know like what the psychopath the senator is until like forty five minutes in.
- 48:02He would just be very charming, very personal. He'd be like oh
- 48:07no, and then like the last forty five minutes, he'd just be like,
- 48:09oh man, that's terrible. Snap someone's neck. Yeah, that's how
- 48:15would go to In this episode, he's just like, hello, here's my
- 48:17deal. People like me, but also I'm fucking nuts. He has a
- 48:23he has a bit of Gary Busey energy where he is. And this is
- 48:29interesting to me in something that I did enjoy, which is he seems to
- 48:34be aware of his psychopathy and yet still indulges in it. I think during
- 48:40his dinner with Victoria he claims that he has gotten his anger in check,
- 48:45and moments after that, maybe a full minute, kicks the shit out of
- 48:51a drunk man. And I just, I mean, I found it comedic
- 48:55that both of these things, that the line of dialogue where he's like,
- 49:00hey, look I got my anger in check, and then he really unleashes
- 49:04on a guy. You know, those things happening back to back. I
- 49:07was convinced the episode was building him up to be untrustworthy, uncouth. Obviously
- 49:13this was not a reference then, but to my eyes, Trumpian indulging,
- 49:19indulgent and angry and flying off the handle, where the other candidate, Judge
- 49:25Daggett, seemed to be the intellectual guy, even though he had a lot
- 49:30of strange stances as well. Are we supposed to in the show's view,
- 49:37Am I supposed to like the senator? This is my question as well.
- 49:43Yeah, I totally. It feels like it's pretty on the Senator's side,
- 49:49and the Senator has like a really weird way of framing his because all of
- 49:52his faults he comes out and he tells you like, but it's always like,
- 49:57well, you know me, I have my I have my one fault,
- 50:00fault, I have anchor issues, and it's like, you know me,
- 50:02I have my one fault. I'm very impulsive in make rash decisions.
- 50:07Are you know me? I have my one fault. I'm very stubborner you
- 50:10know me? I like to commit manslaughter a lot. That's right, Yeah,
- 50:15he does. He very much does threaten to murder and then invite to
- 50:20murder his opposing candidate. And it seems to me like the actions, the
- 50:25dialogue, the blocking of this episode is leading me to think that I don't
- 50:30like bannered the Senator Banner. However, Victoria likes him, and the Barclays
- 50:37like him, and the Barclays frequently reference that they are not in the same
- 50:43party with Judge Daggett, which leads me to think, well, I mean,
- 50:46I mean, but we like the Barkleys, so we have to be
- 50:50with the Barcley. It's the same question that we have with Andy Griffith all
- 50:53the time, which is whose side am I supposed to be on with this
- 50:57show? You know? And Adam makes a good point like, well,
- 51:00the protagonists are on this side, so I guess the show wants me to
- 51:05be on there, so maybe, yeah, I think I have the definitive
- 51:07answer to this, and I think it's all just one scene where they show
- 51:14a prolonged scene of him being nice to a horse, and I'm pretty sure
- 51:17that this is this show's go to whenever they like want to give a thumbs
- 51:22up to a guy, where they're just like, oh, oh hey,
- 51:24they're shadow, oh you you're such a big, strong horse here, let
- 51:28me give you an apple, and it's like thumbs up. This guy's great.
- 51:31Yeah, that's a good point, Dan, Although when he's speaking sweetly
- 51:36to his horse, he then hops on his horse and he's like, let's
- 51:38go murder Judge Daggett, And so that's confusing too, because he is being
- 51:43a real sweetie to his his pony, but then they ride together like the
- 51:47wind to kill meditated slot. All right, hang on, let's let's let's
- 51:54give them reference here. So there's so much plot to this episode. This
- 51:58episode is actually this episode, actually would you mind? Can I swing at
- 52:02this? Yeah? Go for it? Okay. So Senator Bannard arrives in
- 52:07town. He is warmly received by the Barclays, but he's getting the cold
- 52:10shoulder from his opposing candidate, Judge Daggett, who seems to be a kind
- 52:15of a skinny, kind of untrustworthy intellectual type who cares a lot about money.
- 52:20And you could read into that if you want to. Senator Bannard used
- 52:23to have a relationship with Victoria. This is a Victoria vehicle. This entire
- 52:28episode seems to be about Victoria, her past, how awesome she looks in
- 52:32leather And we're going to get back to the leather jack in a second.
- 52:37On that jack leather jacket. And we see that Bannard's talking about his past,
- 52:42how things are good, he's happily married, he's doing well, he's
- 52:45figured out how to be a successful politician, and yet he still falls into
- 52:50the tramp of being indulgent in his habits, his bad habits, including when
- 52:54a drunk man wanders through a restaurant and accidentally spills something or other in Victoria's
- 53:00lap and Bannard's response is to punch him really hard several times, and Victoria
- 53:07calms him down, and then he says, oh, gosh, my bad,
- 53:09I'm so sorry. I have one flaw and it's that I do extreme
- 53:14violence. And then during the nighttime, Victoria gets a knock on the door.
- 53:20I guess they live in a hotel. What's this is the ship's creek.
- 53:23She's staying in the hotel, like she came into town to see him,
- 53:27and then she's like, okay, well I might as well crash at
- 53:30the hotel. Yeah. She gets a rap at the door, and some
- 53:35nameless man says, here's a note, and we don't know the contents of
- 53:38the note, but it leads her to go to Senator Bannard's room, and
- 53:42we learned that the note was forged and it was to set up this situation
- 53:45where both of them were in the same hotel room at three am and surprise,
- 53:50they get TMZD and someone takes a Daguero type from a ladder in a
- 53:54window and then he has defenestrated through the window through fourteen panes of glass,
- 54:00falls through the second floor moon roof of an Acura and um, it's clear
- 54:06that there is a plot against bannerd And what is obvious at this point is
- 54:10it must be Judge Daggett pause, clearly dislikes Bannard. Pause. We've gotten
- 54:19through, Like now we're at the first commercial break. Can I just say
- 54:22how fucking funny it is for someone to be surprise attacked with a photograph in
- 54:29the eighteen hundreds, like surprise proof and like like dust appear that like it
- 54:36was like, god, damn, I can't see. It's one of those
- 54:37cameras where he's like surprised and he's supposed to catch them in the act,
- 54:42but because of the camera, they have to stay there for fourteen minutes.
- 54:45It's like someone was surprised and then painted him. It's so weird because because
- 54:52like they have a very long conversation, uh, where Victoria comes to the
- 54:58room and it's like, hey, I got your note, Is everything okay?
- 55:00And Dagg it's like I didn't write you a note And that should have
- 55:02been the end of the Bannard Bannard says, I didn't write the bannerd says,
- 55:06I didn't write a note, and that should have been the end of
- 55:08the conversation. But they have to sit there and talk for a couple of
- 55:10minutes like, oh, that's weird. Oh, but we should probably get
- 55:14out for you safety. Well, I'm gonna be fine, And they have
- 55:15to do that because somewhere in the doorframe a guy is liked, this easel
- 55:20won't this leg won't come out of the thatch hold on. Okay, let
- 55:24me focus this in and okay, I'm ready surprised. He's climbing. He's
- 55:30climbing a ladder outside of the window with all of his gear, and if
- 55:34he fucks this up, he's going to fall down that ladder and smash all
- 55:37of his gear, which I'm sure it costs a lot of money. That's
- 55:40his whole livelihood, and this whole plan falls to shit, and all that
- 55:45scene would just be Victoria consoling Senator Bannard and from out of the room,
- 55:51fuck and that would have been the whole thing. And that's not what happened.
- 55:58But they do get a photo taken of them. He also exactly he
- 56:00has to wait for like the the only moment where they make physical contact,
- 56:06which is what like he's just kind of like helping her up, Like she's
- 56:09like, all right, help me out of bed, and she he like
- 56:12grabs her arm and then he's like ha you you're touching ha ha click the
- 56:16bannered. Bannered receives of the photo with beautiful handwriting and it says, withdraw
- 56:24from the race. Yeah, so they send they send him a threat.
- 56:28It's a it's a threatening letter, and it's like, guess what we're gonna
- 56:30reveal this this thing? Yeah, the handwritten note says do you like me?
- 56:36And then it says why we're in? Yeah? That was cute.
- 56:40So that's where we are. I guess that's about the halfway points. And
- 56:44so that's the mark. Uh, that's the setup, right, and so
- 56:47Victoria has to wonder how to do this now. So Victoria and Banning and
- 56:54the boys Heath and Jared and Nick Tony's voice, Yeah yeah, the boys,
- 57:00Ethan, Jared and Nick. They got to sit there and be like,
- 57:02what are what are we gonna do? Jared doesn't do much in this
- 57:07episode, except where a lot of eyeliner I notice, Yeah, he's very
- 57:13clearly wearing eyeliner, right, is his whole role in the show to just
- 57:16be like Lesson, let's sit and wait and see how this whole thing sorts
- 57:21out? Is he just like the breaks of the show of like everybody's got
- 57:25a calm down. I was thinking about these characters, the Barclay Brothers in
- 57:31archetypes from comic books, and to me, Jared felt like a very neutral
- 57:39observer, you know, someone who just wanted to let the law work in
- 57:44the way that it needs to. He's not particularly heroic, but he is
- 57:47very smart. I was trying to think of who he is, Foggy Nelson.
- 57:52Maybe he's a Foggy Nelse like Wattu Like I was about to say,
- 57:57Adam. Is there any sort of compooky character that passively watches events and has
- 58:01some sort of doctrine against interference? Oh, the man thing, that's right.
- 58:07So Jared Barkley is the maccab a man thing, and he believes in
- 58:12law and order. Yeah, so at this point, But the reason why
- 58:15I brought this up is Nick really flies off the handle and he feels a
- 58:19little more rowdy, like a Hawkeye type or maybe an iron Man, a
- 58:22Tony Stark, whereas Heath to me, felt very Captain America. I like
- 58:27the dynamic. I really enjoy the dynamic between Heath and Nick when Nick says
- 58:31he's gonna get on his horse and dig up the photos and in Judge Daggett's
- 58:37office, and I think Nick's line was, you know, why don't you
- 58:43just stay here? And Heath says, what makes you think I was gonna
- 58:46go with you? And Nick's responds, because you don't trust me, That's
- 58:50why. And then they's like, god, dang it, you got me,
- 58:52Let's ride. And I just love that. I thought that was great.
- 58:55Did anyone else half expect Nick to get machine gunned to death at a
- 59:00toll booth like in The Godfather? Was he was given me? Real?
- 59:06Like that? My boy? They yeah, real, they massacred my boy.
- 59:12Well. Part part of the reason why it felt like that is that,
- 59:15like's, let's get back to that fucking bitch and leather jacket that Barbara
- 59:20Stanwick's wearing. She looks cool as fucking it, but also does she looks
- 59:23very much like she went to a Western store in nineteen sixty four. Yes,
- 59:29she's wearing the same jacket as Olivia Newton John at the end of grease,
- 59:34like, Yeah, everybody in here just looks like they went to a
- 59:37country Western store. They all looked like they came from a cracker barrel.
- 59:39That they came from a cracker barrel. Hoot nanny. The costume design on
- 59:44this is I'm being real nitpicky about the production here, but the costume design
- 59:49is very like it's it's it's annoying. It takes me out of it because
- 59:53I sit there and go, you are very clearly wearing nineteen sixties gear like
- 59:59this is ridicu. I had to sit there for a second. Sarah walked
- 1:00:01in and asked me, what year is this? Like? When does this
- 1:00:05take place? If a sixty year old woman went outside in that leather cowboy
- 1:00:09suit in Texas, she would be mummified instantly. That isity. That is
- 1:00:19very funny. But I'm gonna call agism. Victoria's timeless and I think she
- 1:00:24was born wearing that outfit quite frankly also, and I'm I'm loving all of
- 1:00:29her activities and this this episode was very interesting because I kept waiting for the
- 1:00:35other shoe to drop, and I thought, what was going to be the
- 1:00:38case. Is this was my expectation. I thought we would learn that a
- 1:00:43banner was actually behind all of this and was basically trying to frame Daggett by
- 1:00:47making it look like Daggett was playing dirty or something. I just was convinced
- 1:00:52that that was the case, and ultimately we learned that both of these guys
- 1:00:55are real d holes, and that's listen, I'm gonna kind of I'm going
- 1:01:02to do a defense of dagg It here. Okay, Daggett is behind the
- 1:01:07whole scheme, which is kind of it's the one weakness of the whole thing,
- 1:01:12where yeah, dagget they're like, it's yeah, it's very on the
- 1:01:15nose, but whatever. So Daggett commissioned these illicit photographs to discredit his opponent
- 1:01:22because the Senator's probably going to win. The senator's fucking lunatic, as he's
- 1:01:29proven over the course of this episode. And also the Senator is pushing for
- 1:01:35an irrigation system that he maintains is not very well thought out and will go
- 1:01:39over budget and bankrupt the state, which, like I would have to read
- 1:01:44the text of the bill, but based off of this guy's behavior, I
- 1:01:49am going to guess that he is not the best number cruncher so I would
- 1:01:54be a little dodgy about his accounting. So Daggett does what he has to
- 1:02:00do, which is play sketchy politics. Yeah, get this guy out of
- 1:02:04the race. You have to take him out of the race because he's too
- 1:02:06much of a risk for this this wonderful town. He's he's a fucking lunatic
- 1:02:10who has managed to cowboy charm his way into a Senate seat. Or undoubtedly
- 1:02:15he's going in and being like like just going into the state Senate, be
- 1:02:20like we should go to war with France. Let's do it. They gave
- 1:02:23us a dirty look. Let's fuck him up. Remember, just just let's
- 1:02:34all appreciate that the day this candidate arrived in town, the very same day,
- 1:02:39he kicked the ship out of a drunk I shouldn't say that out of
- 1:02:45a man struggling, a man who is a little intoxicated. Yeah, not
- 1:02:50even like a drunk, very apologetic man who was like he was grabbing,
- 1:02:55he was grabbing the lady's arm inappropriately. He was like, I'm so sorry.
- 1:03:00Let me let me make it up to you. I'm so sorry.
- 1:03:02And the senator was like, you past the ship and then clocked him.
- 1:03:07He was doing that great. Yeah, he really went hell razor on him,
- 1:03:09which was weird. He flayed his skin off, and I was like,
- 1:03:12whoa a lot. I want to get to something about this. I'm
- 1:03:15gonna skip ahead to the part where, no, we're trying to do this
- 1:03:20in sequence slowly. Yeah, there's a lot of talking. There's so much
- 1:03:23talking. There's a lot of talking. There's a lot of well, I'm
- 1:03:27gonna skip ahead to the part where the action kind of kicks back in,
- 1:03:30and that is where Banning goes and confronts dagg It Bannard. Bannard goes and
- 1:03:36kind of confronts dagg It and basically says, look, motherfucker, I know
- 1:03:39that you were behind this. I don't know how I'm gonna prove it,
- 1:03:45but I'm gonna. I don't care. I'm gonna kill you now. Like
- 1:03:46he just goes and straight up and says like, hey man, I'm gonna
- 1:03:51kill you. That's not a figure of speech. I'm going to kill you.
- 1:03:54We're gonna have a sick asshole, Judge Daggett, you want compromising photo
- 1:04:00of me than subscribe to my only fans like everybody else. Like he comes
- 1:04:03in and it says like we're gonna have a duel, and Dagget's like,
- 1:04:06nah, dude, come on, I'm not gonna fucking duel you. And
- 1:04:09he's like, all right, you can duel me or I can drag your
- 1:04:12ass out in the street and murder you. And Dagget's like, oh okay,
- 1:04:16And I'm at home going I don't think this man should be a senator.
- 1:04:20Yeah, And that's just it. Daggett is repeatedly saying, you want
- 1:04:28to solve everything with violence, and I was assuming the show was condemning that
- 1:04:34notion is I'm assuming that they're using Daggett as a vehicle to say we need
- 1:04:40to be more civilized than this, and I was astounded to learn that Daggett
- 1:04:45was playing dirty, which I guess, you know, neither here nor there.
- 1:04:47It's politics. You've got to do what you've got to do. But
- 1:04:50the show is clearly condemning Daggett for his behavior, and Daggett is ultimately thrown
- 1:04:56from a carriage and killed, and then Bannard says, well, we don't
- 1:05:00need to let the authorities get into this again being egregious, and everything works
- 1:05:05out in favor for Bannard and the Barclays, and so to me, I
- 1:05:10don't know if this was intentional or not, but it left me with a
- 1:05:13feeling of this show was very high intellect suddenly, where it say you you
- 1:05:18don't have favorites when it comes to the two party system. There it's both
- 1:05:23bad my friend and it really just comes down to who you have any social
- 1:05:27ties too. It's also it's also very succession like it feels like a precursor
- 1:05:30something like Succession, where it's just like, hey, just because they the
- 1:05:34protagonist, don't make him the good guys. Yeah, our Game of Thrones,
- 1:05:39right, this gray morality, which is something you skipped a couple of
- 1:05:43steps there at them. So I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna walk us
- 1:05:45through this. And Dan, I feel like you got something here, but
- 1:05:47I'm gonna walk us through what happened is there? So, uh, dagg
- 1:05:50It and Bannard do like meet up at the edge of town or out in
- 1:05:57the woods, but they don't have a duel. Dagget's just like, you
- 1:06:00know what, fuck this, I'm gone, You're never getting these these pictures
- 1:06:04from me. And they have a fight, and they have a fight on
- 1:06:06top of a carriage, Daggett is thrown from the carriage. Victoria is there.
- 1:06:13Victoria witnesses the whole thing. I think, yeah, look and find
- 1:06:16this hell in that jacket. And she witnesses it. I think she came
- 1:06:19out to try to stop it, but she witnesses it, and she sees
- 1:06:26that Daggett, after being thrown from the carriage, is dead. And for
- 1:06:30some reason, Banning is like, oh man, it's really bad that this
- 1:06:32guy that I was going to murder is dead. I'm very confused at his
- 1:06:39response here, like what was he gonna do because his plan was to kill
- 1:06:42this guy, But when the guy is actually dead, he's like, oh
- 1:06:45no, and he's like okay. So the way it's it's solved is basically,
- 1:06:51if we can prove that Daggett was blackmailing you, it's justified. Then
- 1:06:57they'll believe her testimony that this was accidental and everything's fine, yea, And
- 1:07:03to which I would say, under the even under the best of circumstances,
- 1:07:08this was premeditated assault followed by I followed by involuntary manslaughter. So like,
- 1:07:16and let's let's remember here, Jared is a lawyer, Like, they can't
- 1:07:20they say it very often. Jared is a lawyer, all right. They
- 1:07:25go back and report all of these events to Jared, and his head twists
- 1:07:28around. She degrees like the Exorcist. And you would think at this point
- 1:07:32you would call the fucking lawyer that is your son. But no, Jared
- 1:07:35doesn't do dick. Jared doesn't show up until the last scene. Like look
- 1:07:41at this point, Jared's just like you motherfuckers aren't gonna listen to me anyway,
- 1:07:45That's true. So I'm just gonna go get drunk like fuck all you
- 1:07:48guys have fun solving it with with cowboy nohow, I'll be over here knowing
- 1:07:55the fucking laws. So I mean, let's let's break let's break down the
- 1:07:58case here, which is okay, so you went, you met your opponent
- 1:08:05out in the woods alone at the edge of town, like by yourself.
- 1:08:10Why why were you there in the first place? Okay? Now why was
- 1:08:14he in the carriage? Okay? Now why was he standing up in the
- 1:08:17carriage? Okay, Now what I'm gonna I'm gonna have it. Let me
- 1:08:21interject this is going to sound like a joke, but but cowboy law right,
- 1:08:27like cowboy cowboy rules, and you know this. This is a cowboy
- 1:08:31show. We do cowboy things. So I feel like it's just not it
- 1:08:35doesn't carry the weight where this stakes, but that it would in an I
- 1:08:41feel like I feel like the whole thing. They feel like the whole reason
- 1:08:44for this show, the whole like reason you have Jared as a character is
- 1:08:48because it's it's the man who shot Liberty Valance, right, It's the death
- 1:08:53of the Old West. It's those ways are going away and now there's a
- 1:08:57more civilized time. The West is becoming tame. So that's that's where the
- 1:09:00conflict arises between Nick and Jared his brothers, and that's like the main theme
- 1:09:03of this So you have to figure there is some sense of law semblance of
- 1:09:09law in here. Sure. But then in this episode, the dying Old
- 1:09:14West rises from the grave and a Camaro and it's like, I'll never die
- 1:09:20Cowboy justice forever. Whoa right? And then we have one loose thread and
- 1:09:26Victoria rides to a different town to beat up a photographer and honestly, I
- 1:09:32mean power to her, this man. You know, I took a photograph
- 1:09:36of her without her consent and she looks Feinn and it's great. I love
- 1:09:42I want to be clear here. She beats the shit out of this guy,
- 1:09:47really does, scratches his face up to where he's bleeding all the way
- 1:09:50down. She throws uh like photo developer fluid in his face, in his
- 1:09:57eyes, does she she? In her defense, he is trying to strangle
- 1:10:02her to death with a length of rope the entire time just doing a beat
- 1:10:08down. It is a gnarly fight. Like no. She basically comes in
- 1:10:13and it's like, hey, you confess to the conspiracy that you have been
- 1:10:16in on it, and he goes no, and he tries to run away,
- 1:10:20and then they have a very long fight and she do you, guys
- 1:10:25ever watch professional wrestling? Did you ever watch watch she went in. She
- 1:10:30went in there and climbed a turnbuckle and set up and did a swanton.
- 1:10:35Yeah, she just demolished. She she she pads off and throws him into
- 1:10:40the audience. She didn't. She looked right at the camera and did the
- 1:10:43people's eyebrow. She gave him a stunner, She gave him the pedigree,
- 1:10:47She did the Rakishi move, she did all of the fish was a little
- 1:10:54yeah, she did. She did suck it. If you ain't down with
- 1:10:57that she said, my name is the R, to the O, to
- 1:10:59the A, to the D D, to the to the double G,
- 1:11:00the road Dog Jesse James. She identified herself as a different person. It
- 1:11:05was confusing and she was It was pure bloodlust and I liked watching her beat
- 1:11:10that guy down. And I also liked this stylization of the fight when they
- 1:11:15were in the development develops. Yeah. Yeah, at one point in time
- 1:11:20they break from the technicolor world they go into the developing room, so there's
- 1:11:24like a red cellophane film over everything, which made the fight look even more
- 1:11:29brutal. Uh. Yeah, it was. This episode fucking rocks, like
- 1:11:33the fight from kill Bill where it goes through different cinematic styles, but it's
- 1:11:39just one old lady beating the shit out of a tubby guy. Yeah.
- 1:11:43Um, this episode rocks. And I have to say it's strange to me
- 1:11:47that I chose this randomly from a list of the worst purported episodes of Big
- 1:11:54Valley, because if this is one of the worst, I mean, bring
- 1:11:58it on. And to be clear, like the worst here Jess means it
- 1:12:01has one of the lower IMDb ratings, And even then it's like, okay,
- 1:12:05that's the metric. Yeah, that's that's the metrics that that particular site
- 1:12:08uses that we were on. No, okay, I'm going to estimate.
- 1:12:13I mean, I guess that the reason it's ranked the lowest is probably why
- 1:12:17we like it, because I feel like the people that are ranking these things
- 1:12:20are like more land discussions. I want to see the deed. You're not
- 1:12:28talking about railroads enough? Okay, Yeah, the most the most popular episode
- 1:12:32of Big Valley is just a ZBA meeting. Yeah. I'm looking at the
- 1:12:38list of the worst episodes of Big Valley and tell me you don't want to
- 1:12:42see season three episode fourteen, titled Journey into Violence. Hell, yes,
- 1:12:51especially because I know that this show fucking means it. Yeah, this show.
- 1:12:57Tell me you don't want to watch season three episode twenty for Devil's Masquerade,
- 1:13:01or season two episode nine, or I'm sorry, season four episode sixteen,
- 1:13:06the twenty five Graves of Midas fuck that could come. Alright, alright,
- 1:13:13alright, alright, So this is a good opportunity for us to turn
- 1:13:15this. Adam, your dad loves this show. Your mom hates this show
- 1:13:20on a scale of mister Teterris to missus Teterris. Yeah, where are you
- 1:13:25falling on this. Oh, it's a mister Tetterris out of ten Buster.
- 1:13:30I've found myself really enjoying my time. I was excited that my fiance was
- 1:13:34going to come home and walk in on me watching a cowboy drama from the
- 1:13:40sixties. I've always dreamt of being my dad, and it's happening in reality,
- 1:13:45and I look, I think, I really do have a regret that
- 1:13:51I didn't access this show with my dad earlier, because maybe I just wasn't
- 1:13:57mature enough or wouldn't appreciate it enough. But I spend a lot of time
- 1:14:01during the past couple of years in Quarantine, rewatching every single Godzilla movie from
- 1:14:08nineteen fifty four to present, the last live action film coming out in twenty
- 1:14:13sixteen. I spent a lot of time in the sixties and seventies, specifically
- 1:14:16watching my favorite era of Godzilla movies. Hey say, and I think it
- 1:14:21has turned my palette into such a way that I can appreciate things from a
- 1:14:31certain era. Now. Of course those are Japanese Tokosatsu film, so it's
- 1:14:34it's totally different. But I don't know, I don't know. Maybe I
- 1:14:38wasn't ready for a big valley before, but I'm ready now, I'm here.
- 1:14:45I want to be a Barkley. I want to be a Bastard son.
- 1:14:49I want Thomas Barkley to be my dad. I'm gonna give I'm gonna
- 1:14:54cut child Adam some slack because this is very much a show for people who
- 1:14:59are over there. Yea. That's like if you showed this to me as
- 1:15:02a child, it would be like showing across to a vampire. It is
- 1:15:08also a middle finger to like millennials. And because this is not a be
- 1:15:13on your phone show, this is a sin and fucking watch and pay attention
- 1:15:16to what's going on show. Uh yeah, So, Adam, why do
- 1:15:20you think your dad likes this so much? And why do you think your
- 1:15:24mom doesn't like it? My dad loves westerns. My my dad really loves
- 1:15:31John Wayne. And it seems obvious to me that John Wayne's whole thing,
- 1:15:39the whole ufra, the man, the concept, the mood. This is
- 1:15:45the show of that. This is the serialized version of of good cowboys versus
- 1:15:50bad cowboys. And to me, this is more morally complex than I expected
- 1:15:56it to be. I think, you know, my dad was born ring
- 1:16:00a time when cowboys were just a really big concept in media, and it's
- 1:16:04just obvious, like, you know, how why was I into Power Rangers?
- 1:16:08I don't know. I got sat in front of it and it just
- 1:16:11rocks. Man. So I think it's probably the same reasons, but perhaps
- 1:16:15my father has nostalgia tied to it, and uh, I think it's totally
- 1:16:19understandable, by a counterpoint, why my mom can't deal because it's a lot
- 1:16:25of conversations about land laws and if you're not looking for the fun, you
- 1:16:30know, he's talking to his horse sweetly and I'm here for that, then
- 1:16:34you're getting nothing from this except for maybe fashion from Victoria. So it's you
- 1:16:41know, it's it's a it's a guy's drama. And I don't know what
- 1:16:45else there is to say about it, but it's clearly not made for Mi
- 1:16:48Madre. But I get it. I totally understand where my dad isn't,
- 1:16:51you know. It's it's also funny to me, like this is when I
- 1:16:55talked to my dad about TV shows and I was like, what what you
- 1:16:58what were you into? What did you want? The kid? And like
- 1:17:00why'd you like sporns? My dad? My dad actually did like the Osbornes.
- 1:17:03But because also my Dad's like an old metal head. Uh okay um
- 1:17:11and uh but you know, I asked my dad about it and he said,
- 1:17:15you know, what did I watch as a kid? Whatever was fucking
- 1:17:17on? We didn't have choices, you know, the shows you watched?
- 1:17:21What was there? You know? So uh that was part of that conversation.
- 1:17:28Thanks Dad, real helpful. Now he was actually really good about it.
- 1:17:30Hey Dad, what did you like to watch? Marty Riley read Jesus
- 1:17:39Christ? Marty? Have you have you heard of this porn up thing?
- 1:17:42I gotta tell you it's a real hoop. Have you ever seen the porn
- 1:17:45genre? Man desecrates Tombstone as sex with sister plus come shot, Marty.
- 1:17:55It just like, Marty, need to tap to you urgently. Give me
- 1:18:00a call, all right? Another question, who's your favorite Barkley bro?
- 1:18:09I'm a I'm a Heath stand personally, you see that for me? I
- 1:18:14really like Nick, but I find I find Nick simple. His his reckless
- 1:18:17whims are simple, and I think I could get tired of him being a
- 1:18:20dummy. And I also found that Jared was too removed off situation. Now.
- 1:18:27In the first episode that we watched Palms of Glory, I don't know
- 1:18:30enough about Heath to understand, and I said I couldn't get a beat on
- 1:18:33him. And in the second episode he appeared just infrequently enough for me to
- 1:18:39like the dynamic but not get tired. So I feel like the mystique stays
- 1:18:45and I want to know more about Heath. I like like the Lee Majors
- 1:18:51is what never in in the credits, even into the third season, are
- 1:19:00like Richard Long as Jared Barkley, Peter Breck as Nick Barkley, Lee Majors
- 1:19:05as Heath. They very specifically do not give him the Barkley name, like,
- 1:19:15well, let's be his last name is Cliff. Yes, his name
- 1:19:18is Heath Cliff. He terrorizes the neighborhood and uh sometimes he wears a helmet
- 1:19:27that says ham on it and U Marty's Comics Corner. So Heath Cliff has
- 1:19:32turned into a donna Is Nightmare, is instantly going toe to toe with what
- 1:19:40is it? Garbage ape garbage ape. Yes, Heath Cliff is so strange
- 1:19:44and I love it. I love it. Sorry, Dan, I was
- 1:19:46gonna do a Wodering Heights joke, but it's so far back. It's do
- 1:19:53I look for the best episodes of Big Valley and Uh. Season three episode
- 1:19:58eleven is named explode Osian two. Yes, that ship is a Metallica song
- 1:20:06in inferring that there is an explosion one at least sorry. Season three episode
- 1:20:13eight, The Disappearance Metallica song. Season three episode twenty two, rim Fire,
- 1:20:18This shit rocks. Uh. I like the show. I'm sorry.
- 1:20:24Season one, episode twelve, Night of the Wolf, don't mind if I
- 1:20:28do. I'm gonna watch more Big Valley. That's gonna be my thing.
- 1:20:32Now. I'm gonna see if I can find episodes in a better quality,
- 1:20:35because right I we're just watching them my pretty rough. I wanted to say
- 1:20:39something that I discovered is that in twenty ten there was a plan to do
- 1:20:44a cinematic reboot of The Big Value starring Susan Sarandon as Victoria. But that
- 1:20:53film, yeah, I can see it now, and I think now she's
- 1:20:56got a very similar like monarch of a Dynasty role. Actually, wait,
- 1:21:00no, isn't like her new TV show literally called Monarch something like that.
- 1:21:04I can't keep track of shows. How there's like Nashville Monarch, Matriarch Kingdom.
- 1:21:14But like, the film was shelved after the director that was attached was
- 1:21:20indicted in a forty seven no sorry, four point seven million dollars tax fraud
- 1:21:26case. Uh and it was facing up to thirty two years in prison.
- 1:21:30So that's the last time that that was like, Oh man, oops,
- 1:21:34I'm I would take it. I want it. I would want a kind
- 1:21:38of I don't know what I would want from it. Um, maybe a
- 1:21:41twenty one Jump Street revival. You know what, I think. I think
- 1:21:44you got to leave this one alone because I think one of the things that
- 1:21:46makes it appealing and also one of the things that makes it rough to watch
- 1:21:50is the very sixties. Is this of it, right? Is the like
- 1:21:57it's rough, It is surprisingly violent. It is you can't do this with
- 1:22:02a modern understanding of cowboys like you. You have to be in that sort
- 1:22:08of a willful ignorance. Yeah, you have to buy into the mythology.
- 1:22:16And this would a modern remake would try probably successfully to deconstruct the mythology.
- 1:22:23But if we're being honest and I've all it would be so overdone though,
- 1:22:28it would just be like constantly and if we're being on a special episode.
- 1:22:32I've watched a lot of westerns, right, and westerns have been deconstructing themselves
- 1:22:38since about nineteen fifty eight, Like we've torn it apart from pretty much from
- 1:22:42what I thought was basically every angle and tell power of the Dog, which
- 1:22:45was just like, hey man, we haven't talked about how gay this is
- 1:22:48enough yet. I haven't talked about the gainess of all this yet. Yeah
- 1:22:53at that point, yeah, well, um, I feel like we're at
- 1:22:57a consensus. But did both of you boys enjoy why? I think I
- 1:23:00talked my way into liking the Big value over Yeah, I was. I
- 1:23:05texted Marty so, um, we had an abandoned uh one of these we
- 1:23:12uh we we were were going to do because Marty's sister selfishly got COVID God
- 1:23:16damn. Yeah. And as a result, I had to watch two episodes
- 1:23:23of Doctor Quinn Medicine Woman, which board spoilers for if we board the Living
- 1:23:29piss Out of successfully say sucks. I texted Marty during the first episode,
- 1:23:35was like, I cannot believe you made me watch another fucking Cowboys show.
- 1:23:41That's just people grumbling about land rights. Why are you doing this? And
- 1:23:45then uh, Marty was like, listen, we'll probably get something out of
- 1:23:48it, and I text the second I was like, oh wait, no,
- 1:23:50we're good. Yeah, sorry, this shit slaps Yeah. I'm sorry
- 1:23:55that first one is all set up and maybe we should have skipped it entirely
- 1:23:59because I wouldn't have known who Heath was and why he's the best. I'm
- 1:24:03glad I understand this objectively, you know, I'm on board. I like
- 1:24:08I like Big Valley. I think we both agree that like this shit slaps
- 1:24:13yeah. To circle back to the original question, though, Heath is objectively
- 1:24:16the best one and if he's not your favorite, you're a fool. Yeah,
- 1:24:20and the only only other answer could be Victoria. As far as i'm
- 1:24:25it's like if you ask what your favorite Power Ranger is and you don't say
- 1:24:28green, you're an idiots. Tommy, I'm a billy, I was.
- 1:24:34But the thing is is you had to choose by, you know, like
- 1:24:36your favorite color, and often you didn't really get to choose. You just
- 1:24:40had to pick the one that was your favorite color. And everybody like Tommy,
- 1:24:44there's too much of a crowd around Tommy. You know what I mean?
- 1:24:45So you know what you know what your crowd around Tommy for good?
- 1:24:49Hang on, Hang on a second, Hang on a second. Everybody loves
- 1:24:53Tommy. But just as I get older and I find myself understanding Cyclops a
- 1:24:59lot more, sure, I also, as I get older, find myself
- 1:25:02understanding Jason a lot more. Cyclops of the crew. Right, Tommy,
- 1:25:08he got that that wolverine energy. Everybody loves Tommy Jason. Jason is doing
- 1:25:15what he fucking has to do. He sure? Did you guys think it
- 1:25:18was weird that the Senator Bannard said that he wanted to build a reservoir in
- 1:25:24stocked in so he could play a magic dagger flute and draw a zword from
- 1:25:30that said reservoir. And I just thought it was weird that the only thing
- 1:25:33that anybody critiqued was Daggett said it would cost too much money. Like we
- 1:25:39you know, we looked at it right in the face and said it would
- 1:25:41just be too expensive. If elected, I will I will bring about ivan
- 1:25:45Ouze's return. I am making that promise to you here now. I thought
- 1:25:51there were no children in Stockton from what I could tell, so OOZ wouldn't
- 1:25:55really stand at cham Yeah, you would just be a just a purple bit.
- 1:25:59I thought it was very weird when the ghost of Thomas Barkley appeared in
- 1:26:02a giant tube and insisted that he needed four cowboy brothers with attitude. I
- 1:26:09thought that was weird. I thought it was weird that he's specified he needed
- 1:26:11them with attitude. But Adam Terris, thank you for being on the show.
- 1:26:15God damn it, Adam, Adam, thanks for showing up on the
- 1:26:16show again. Yet anything you want to plug? You want to tell everybody
- 1:26:19where to find your socials and what to do with your things. Yes,
- 1:26:23thank you very much for having me on the show. It really is a
- 1:26:26delight to be on this show. I love the show. I love that
- 1:26:29you guys are committed to this pursuit in our expanding beyond Mayberry. Congratulations to
- 1:26:34the both of you. I'll take it. Well, come on, please
- 1:26:40you move out of Mayberry. I think that's great. I think that is
- 1:26:44we are moving back. It's basically a rum springer, Okay, we can
- 1:26:50put it like that. I have a podcast. It's called Man Thing Minute.
- 1:26:55It's a comedy podcast in which I invite funny folks such as yourselves to
- 1:27:00join me in reading one single issue of Marvel's maccab Man Thing who I'm So
- 1:27:04excited is now included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He appeared as a costar
- 1:27:10in Werewolf by Night, which was delightful, by the way, And my
- 1:27:14goal was to make that character relevant and have fun and connect to that character's
- 1:27:17world to other people's worlds. And I feel like now I don't need to
- 1:27:20do that because the MCU done did it right. But the show's funny and
- 1:27:26I enjoy it a lot. And would would you guys be up for being
- 1:27:30on the show? Yeah? Always, Yeah, that'd be great, Okay,
- 1:27:36terrific, So we'll do that. You can find man Thing minute um
- 1:27:40on anchor dot FM slash man Thing minute, where you can follow me on
- 1:27:45Twitter where I post about man Thing minute. Adam teterris At Adam Teterris t
- 1:27:51E t e r U s Adam, I know what you mean about not
- 1:27:58really sure what you what to do now because the mc brought it in.
- 1:28:00I know what you mean. Uh. I was really surprised when Barney Fife
- 1:28:05was revealed to be the main villain of Black Adam in the third act.
- 1:28:09It was it was a shocker. Whoa that really changes the access of power
- 1:28:14in the DC. Hierarchy of power has shifted and Barney Fife is at the
- 1:28:21top. They found a lot of plot holes with it. I love to
- 1:28:29see that. Actually, Barney Fife and um doing the Rock Johnson, Sure,
- 1:28:33I mean the Rock is absolutely the kind of guy that would appear in
- 1:28:36like a like a Scooby Doo like reb The Rock is adolutely solved mysteries with
- 1:28:41Scooby Doo. So as don nonsence happened as long as Scooby Doo was shilling
- 1:28:46Taramana tequila than sure, absolutely, as always you can get it. Scooby
- 1:28:54is a drunk. I'm sick that people haven't said it before, but he's
- 1:28:57a drunk, right because he's not in the cartoons anymore. Yeah, do
- 1:29:02you think that it's a coincidence that he's not there. He's got a problem,
- 1:29:05he's in rehabit. No one's talking about it. They're just moving on
- 1:29:10with the show. And it's only Tarremana, which is fucked up. He
- 1:29:15mixes it with Zoa, the fastest growing energy drink, which is also owned
- 1:29:18by Dwayne Johnson, and it's just fucked up. The Scooby only hits the
- 1:29:23Zoa Taramana. The number of cartoon characters that Dwayne the Rock Johnson has corrupted
- 1:29:29and driven to alcoholism is something that we are not talking about. I didn't
- 1:29:33think it was as bad as when he got Fred Flintstone to join the XFL.
- 1:29:39I thought that was worse. Whoa is Fred Flintstone? Where the bowling
- 1:29:45helmet? That like furry bone helmet. That's bad is that every time he
- 1:29:49gets a concussion from playing football, he thinks he's a different guy. And
- 1:29:53then they trade him to another team and the bad and they think he's an
- 1:30:00art thief. He hits hits again, he thinks he's a race car driver.
- 1:30:03I mean, I would watch him. How do you think that the
- 1:30:08Dolphins are gonna get a first round pick for Tua? That's their whole plan.
- 1:30:12That's their whole plan. They're gonna just make him think he's a different
- 1:30:15guy. And like, guess what your name is, Gardner Minshew, you
- 1:30:17are the second spring quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. Goodbye. I like the
- 1:30:23idea that Fred Flintstone was never a Neander tall at all. He was just
- 1:30:27suffering from CTE. As always, keep it keep this show running, Keep
- 1:30:33the show running. It's gonna take him like twelve hours to edit this because
- 1:30:39there's so much cross talk. They call me the Forrest Gump of Joker.
- 1:30:44Yo, you get you guys excited for the Indian Forest gumpany make there?
- 1:30:50All right? Take now we need to take this off the pot. There
- 1:30:54there is there is an Indian Indian there's an Indian Bollywood remake of Forrest Gump
- 1:30:59that is in cinemas right now. It starts the Guy from Three Idiots,
- 1:31:03which is a great movie. Uh well, now I'm excited. I am.
- 1:31:06I am so psyched to see that. It looks bizarre as hell.
- 1:31:11H The idea that you are taking Forrest Gump, a movie that's like very
- 1:31:15clearly is about America in a very specific time period and taking it making it
- 1:31:20not America and not that time period looks great, looks fantastic. All right,
- 1:31:27I'm into The Bollywood version of Bruce Almighty was absolutely awesome because his whole
- 1:31:31thing was he was like, I'm God, Now you know what, God,
- 1:31:34you didn't fight nearly enough crime? Is that a real thing? Basically
- 1:31:38becomes yeah, yeah, theater when it came out and he uses his godpowers
- 1:31:44to do martial arts and stop bank robber here. That actually sounds really sick.
- 1:31:46And now I don't know if we can put in request. But I
- 1:31:48would like to see a Bollywood don't mess with the Zohan if we could get
- 1:31:54that happening. As always, you can get it us on the internet.
