- 0:00Speaker 1: Huge challenge for us, you know, go on the road
- 0:02Speaker 1: play another power conference team in Duke who's two and
- 0:06Speaker 1: oh coming off of a really good win at Northwestern
- 0:09Speaker 1: on Friday night. Got a chance to watch a little
- 0:12Speaker 1: bit of it on TV. Not much we were focused
- 0:15Speaker 1: in on Merrimack, but got a chance to obviously watch
- 0:17Speaker 1: all their film the last couple of days. Really good team,
- 0:20Speaker 1: played really good defense. As we know. You know, Manny's
- 0:25Speaker 1: a defensive coach. You can see his imprint on this team.
- 0:28Speaker 1: They play hard, they play fast if they play physical offensively.
- 0:31Speaker 1: New quarterback Elite from Texas. Well, transfer from Texas. But
- 0:35Speaker 1: he's a kid from Sarah High School, which is a
- 0:37Speaker 1: high school I knew very very well at UCLA. Recruited
- 0:40Speaker 1: a lot of kids out at school. It's one of
- 0:41Speaker 1: the best programs on the West Coach Coast. Kids been
- 0:45Speaker 1: coached up, great competitor. It was actually my youngest son's
- 0:49Speaker 1: favorite school. He always wanted to go to Sarah. We
- 0:51Speaker 1: used to go over there and and work out on
- 0:53Speaker 1: the weekends. Actually, so I know, I know the lineage,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I know, I know I know where this kid's from.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Man and he's a he's a good player. So we
- 1:03Speaker 1: got our hands full, and our intent is just to
- 1:07Speaker 1: remain focused on what we can control and have a
- 1:10Speaker 1: great week of practice and go out there on Saturday
- 1:13Speaker 1: night in a tough environment and cut it loose and
- 1:15Speaker 1: and try to play great football and uh and work
- 1:18Speaker 1: as hard as we can to beat a really good team.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's it's it's very simple. It's not easy, but it's
- 1:29Speaker 2: very simple.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And want to see us do our job on a
- 1:33Speaker 1: more consistent basis and not just do our own thing,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you know. And that's kind of a natural reaction during
- 1:38Speaker 1: a game as a guy thinks he can make a play,
- 1:40Speaker 1: so he kind of he kind of goes off script
- 1:42Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 1:43Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Defense in football is the ultimate team environment in my opinion.
- 1:49Speaker 1: You know, all eleven have to be on the same
- 1:51Speaker 1: page every play. It's not like on offense, one guy
- 1:54Speaker 1: can just go make a great play, or in hockey
- 1:56Speaker 1: a guy can just get a breakaway, you know and
- 1:58Speaker 1: score on the goal. Here and base baseball it's you know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: pitcher versus hitter at times. You know, basketball, it's just
- 2:06Speaker 1: it's just different. And so we had too many breakdowns
- 2:09Speaker 1: in terms of just getting off off script a little bit.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And then our ability to enter the play correctly when
- 2:16Speaker 1: the ball is declared somewhere and keep the right leverage
- 2:19Speaker 1: just means to keep the ball on the right shoulder
- 2:21Speaker 1: and not get you know, get on the wrong side
- 2:24Speaker 1: of a guy. So we have too many hats on
- 2:25Speaker 1: one side and not enough on the other.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Needs to improve. And then are tackling.
- 2:29Speaker 1: You know, we're not tackling well right now in space particularly,
- 2:33Speaker 1: We're not bringing our chests, we're not wrapping our arms,
- 2:35Speaker 1: we're not grabbing cloth, we're not rolling our hips, we're
- 2:37Speaker 1: not driving our feet. Too many times, we're going with
- 2:40Speaker 1: the shoulder tackle, which to me is not a tackle.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Diving at knees.
- 2:44Speaker 1: All things that are fixable, all things that we're working
- 2:46Speaker 1: hard on, all things that we emphasize, all things that
- 2:49Speaker 1: just need to start happening, like like right now. And
- 2:52Speaker 1: judging from today's practice, the players really understand it. They've
- 2:57Speaker 1: accepted that they're taking responsibility for it, and they're going
- 3:00Speaker 1: to get it fixed a little bit as good in
- 3:08Speaker 1: particular areas, yes, and in particular areas no. I mean,
- 3:11Speaker 1: we all saw the explosive abilities of some of these
- 3:14Speaker 1: new players that we've got, and then some of the
- 3:16Speaker 1: guys that are returning, you know, guys like Cam and Victor. Obviously,
- 3:20Speaker 1: Joe played superb The receivers made plays, the backs made plays.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I think we were really good up front. I was
- 3:26Speaker 1: disappointed in our two minute drive at the end of
- 3:29Speaker 1: the half. You know, we came out through the ball
- 3:30Speaker 1: behind a receiver. Then on second down, UH, there was
- 3:34Speaker 1: a little bit of a leak in our protection and
- 3:36Speaker 1: Joe was forced to get rid of it, and then
- 3:38Speaker 1: we decided to run on third down and go in.
- 3:40Speaker 2: UH.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I didn't think that we maintained intensity in the second
- 3:44Speaker 1: half on offense, even when our our second guys go in,
- 3:47Speaker 1: our backups go in. There's a certain standard that we
- 3:50Speaker 1: expect them to play to, UH, and we didn't do that. Defensively.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I didn't like the fact that we gave up big plays.
- 3:56Speaker 1: You know, we gave up We defined a big play
- 3:59Speaker 1: as a certain number or certain distance on a run,
- 4:02Speaker 1: a certain distance on a pass, and we gave up
- 4:04Speaker 1: seven big plays for two hundred and sixteen yards. We
- 4:07Speaker 1: only gave up two hundred and seventy nine yards total,
- 4:09Speaker 1: So on seven plays, you know, or two hundred and
- 4:12Speaker 1: sixteen yards, that's not acceptable, and that goes back to
- 4:14Speaker 1: the leverage, the play entry, the tackling, and the doing
- 4:18Speaker 1: your job. So but yeah, there were some really good
- 4:20Speaker 1: things as well. I thought we played violent on defense.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I thought we used our hands well. I thought we
- 4:24Speaker 1: ran to the ball well. We just have to do
- 4:25Speaker 1: a better job when we get to the ball offensively.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Like I said, we ran the ball well, and we
- 4:30Speaker 1: made plays in space. And you know, when you can
- 4:32Speaker 1: get a quick drive like that and get a big play,
- 4:34Speaker 1: it's certainly gonna it's certainly going to help you, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: as an offense in terms of productivity.
- 4:39Speaker 3: You've already returned You've already returned ten pumps this year.
- 4:43Speaker 2: You had eleven all year last year.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Is there more of a focus on trying to get
- 4:47Speaker 3: return yards this year, especially with weapons like Chfield.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I mean, no, no more emphasis. There's always an emphasis.
- 4:54Speaker 1: He's a very good punt returner who has really good
- 4:57Speaker 1: judgment back there.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I think we've done.
- 4:59Speaker 1: You know, one of the things is we were able
- 5:01Speaker 1: to force a lot of punts, you know, so that
- 5:02Speaker 1: gives you more opportunities. I think he plays with a
- 5:05Speaker 1: lot of confidence back there because he's experienced. There's always
- 5:08Speaker 1: going to be an emphasis on number one. Secure in
- 5:11Speaker 1: the football. That's the number one thing. It's the first
- 5:13Speaker 1: offensive play and then give what you can get. But
- 5:15Speaker 1: I certainly like him back there. I feel very confident
- 5:18Speaker 1: when he's back there that he's going to make the
- 5:19Speaker 1: right decision and and he he just needs to.
- 5:23Speaker 2: You know, we draw it up right.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You drop a play and you tell him where the
- 5:26Speaker 1: ball is supposed to go, where the return is supposed
- 5:28Speaker 1: to hit. But with a guy like TJ, at the
- 5:30Speaker 1: end of the day, you tell him, okay, that's all
- 5:32Speaker 1: well and good, and let's get on paper, not trust
- 5:34Speaker 1: your instincts. And if he trusts instincts, he'll make plays.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But feel good about him being back there. It's a
- 5:43Speaker 1: little early to tell. I'll meet with the doctors today
- 5:47Speaker 1: and tomorrow. You know, my hope is that, you know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: a guy like Malik can find his way back. You know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: it's only been ten days since his surgery, so you
- 5:56Speaker 1: know that's pushing it. But if he gets cleared, then
- 5:59Speaker 1: he'll be ready to play. He was out at practice
- 6:01Speaker 1: today with a jersey on, nonpadded and he was getting
- 6:04Speaker 1: work behind the first defense, you know, kind of shadowing.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So he's getting good mental reps. You'd hope that Price
- 6:11Speaker 1: can get back this week. It's been a while for
- 6:13Speaker 1: him now, but once again, you know, with a head injury,
- 6:16Speaker 1: we've got to make sure that we do the right
- 6:18Speaker 1: thing for the young man. Nick Nick was, you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: working today at at a higher pace than he was
- 6:24Speaker 1: last week. So feel that there's a chance that he'll
- 6:26Speaker 1: come back. Victor will be out this week. He's having
- 6:31Speaker 1: surgery on this I think I told I tell you
- 6:33Speaker 1: guys this after the game. I think I told you
- 6:34Speaker 1: I thought I told you after the game. Victor broke
- 6:37Speaker 1: his finger last week in practice. They wanted him to
- 6:40Speaker 1: have surgery on Friday. He decided to have to put
- 6:43Speaker 1: it off so he could play the game, which I
- 6:45Speaker 1: commend him for. He wasn't really at risk for further injury.
- 6:49Speaker 1: It was padded up, it was secured against his ring finger,
- 6:53Speaker 1: it was protected. But he has to have surgery tomorrow
- 6:58Speaker 1: and he'll miss this game. Should be back for the
- 7:00Speaker 1: next game. I don't think there's anyone else that I'm missing.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Josiah went out during the game. Uh, he's making really
- 7:10Speaker 1: good progress. I think that he'll be back on the
- 7:12Speaker 1: field tomorrow in a non contact situation. Hopefully ready to
- 7:15Speaker 1: play on Saturday. He's a kid from North Carolina. I
- 7:18Speaker 1: know it's really important for him to play this week.
- 7:22Speaker 3: Lame mentioned that you'd already talked to them about winning.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Your road game against a major opponent. I mean, how
- 7:31Speaker 2: difficult does that happen?
- 7:32Speaker 3: Is there a way you go about that just to
- 7:35Speaker 3: prepare them for a big road game?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Okay, we try to be consistent in our preparation because
- 7:44Speaker 1: I just try to avoid an up and down mentality
- 7:47Speaker 1: about where we're playing and who we're playing, because those
- 7:50Speaker 1: are things we don't control. But when you're playing a
- 7:53Speaker 1: power conference team, I just think it's kind of human
- 7:56Speaker 1: nature right that you just there's just a little bit
- 7:59Speaker 1: more excitement. And there's excitement for every game, don't get
- 8:03Speaker 1: me wrong, but just you know, there's something there. There's
- 8:05Speaker 1: a little bit more of a challenge when you're a
- 8:06Speaker 1: group of five teams that's presented to and if you're
- 8:09Speaker 1: a competitor, it's natural to kind of rise up to that.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And uh, it's all about mindset, and then it's you know,
- 8:15Speaker 1: during the week, the preparation, creating the right mindset, the
- 8:18Speaker 1: right mentality. It's about the preparation every week. We hope
- 8:22Speaker 1: we're consistent in that. And then it's it's being able
- 8:25Speaker 1: to go on the field and handle a different environment
- 8:28Speaker 1: on the road against usually you know, a pretty big, fast, physical,
- 8:31Speaker 1: you know, talented team and and play your best down
- 8:36Speaker 1: in and down out and and fight them, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 1: fight them, not give in to them, not give into
- 8:40Speaker 1: the environment, not give into the pressure. Uh, not be
- 8:44Speaker 1: affected by the aura of playing a power conference team
- 8:48Speaker 1: and just going out and trusting your preparation, trusting your teammates, Uh,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you know, trusting your abilities, having confidence to just to
- 8:56Speaker 1: cut it loose and uh, you know, that's that's what
- 8:59Speaker 1: we'll try to do, recognizing that it's a it's a
- 9:02Speaker 1: it's a heck of a challenge. But you know what
- 9:05Speaker 1: would this all be if we weren't challenged every week?
- 9:08Speaker 1: I mean that's why that's why these guys play these games.
- 9:10Speaker 1: They love it, They love the challenge going.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Into a challenge with this.
- 9:14Speaker 1: To use.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Those football as.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Example, we don't it doesn't matter at us, Like that
- 9:21Speaker 1: stuff doesn't matter, Like it doesn't it just doesn't matter.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I mean it's fun to see, Like, yeah, I mean, listen,
- 9:25Speaker 1: it was fun to you know, listen I'm my whole life.
- 9:28Speaker 1: When I was a little boy, I used to watch
- 9:29Speaker 1: Notre Dame football every Sunday morning. You guys are probably
- 9:31Speaker 1: too young to remember that game, so you know, I'm
- 9:33Speaker 1: but it was fun to watch that upset and the
- 9:35Speaker 1: excitement you know that's generated. But we don't ever bring
- 9:38Speaker 1: that up with our team because it doesn't matter to us.
- 9:41Speaker 1: We got to take care of what we can take
- 9:42Speaker 1: care of it, and that's the guys in the room.
- 9:45Speaker 1: I think if you start talking about that stuff, it's
- 9:47Speaker 1: a distraction, you know, So yeah, we just focus on
- 9:50Speaker 1: us the.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Guy that can chat, right, you guy.
- 9:59Speaker 1: What I really appreciated about Cam was the improvement he
- 10:03Speaker 1: made from week one to week two. Okay, he was
- 10:06Speaker 1: one of the players of the game for us, you know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: this week, and he made some errors in game week
- 10:12Speaker 1: in week one that he corrected in week two. He
- 10:14Speaker 1: was more physical in game in game two. You could
- 10:17Speaker 1: tell that the the the experience of playing at a
- 10:20Speaker 1: place like Maryland in that environment helped him grow up.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And now he's gonna have to take another step up
- 10:25Speaker 1: this week going on the road at Duke. But I
- 10:28Speaker 1: was really impressed with Cam. Say that again, Like during
- 10:40Speaker 1: a game rotation. You mean, yeah, there has been. You know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: there's a little bit more consistency with him and Jordan
- 10:45Speaker 1: being out there. Primarily we're in the past we did
- 10:48Speaker 1: rotate corners through.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Uh.
- 10:50Speaker 1: You know, part of the problem right now is, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: we've had some pretty devastating injuries in the secondary. We
- 10:55Speaker 1: don't have quite the depth that we've had in the past.
- 10:58Speaker 1: So it's it's because of their performing must number one,
- 11:00Speaker 1: and then it's necessity number two. Now they they those
- 11:03Speaker 1: two guys have played the most plays of anyone on
- 11:05Speaker 1: our team, so we have to be very conscious of that.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I know you didn't have many short yard of situations
- 11:11Speaker 3: last week, but is this the week Jilani against.
- 11:13Speaker 2: A George character.
- 11:15Speaker 1: We haven't got the short yardage planning yet. That's a
- 11:18Speaker 1: we We plan short yardage typically on a on a
- 11:21Speaker 1: Tuesday night or a Wednesday morning, so we we haven't
- 11:23Speaker 1: even we've looked at their shortyards. But when you game plan,
- 11:26Speaker 1: you game plan and segments. We haven't game planned short
- 11:28Speaker 1: yards and goal on yet.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Offensive this year.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Well, first of all, it's good to see him healthy
- 11:38Speaker 1: and wanted to keep you know, stay healthy. Uh, he's
- 11:43Speaker 1: a big, massive, guy in there. He plays with a
- 11:45Speaker 1: lot of confidence. He knows what he's doing. For a
- 11:48Speaker 1: guy that's three hundred and thirty pounds and almost sixty seven,
- 11:51Speaker 1: he's gotten unbelievable athleticism, really great feet. I think I've
- 11:54Speaker 1: told you guys before when they go play pick up
- 11:57Speaker 1: basketball in the offseason, he's.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Like the point guard, right.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You think he'd be like the powerful loward, but he's
- 12:02Speaker 1: the point guard, right, drilling between his legs and Doncan
- 12:04Speaker 1: and all that. So he's got that athleticism that you
- 12:07Speaker 1: really like, especially in our scheme. And he's a smart kid.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You know, he just doesn't make mental errors. He just
- 12:12Speaker 1: needs more experience, and he just needs snaps. With more
- 12:15Speaker 1: and more snaps, you're going to see his ability to
- 12:19Speaker 1: be consistent really really improves. He's going to be a
- 12:22Speaker 1: really good player here.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Here.
- 12:26Speaker 1: For a reason.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Is he exceeded maybe in any way what you were hoping.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Or expecting from I'm going to tell you on the field, No,
- 12:35Speaker 1: this is what we thought he was capable of. The
- 12:38Speaker 1: thing that's been the most impressive to me about Skylar
- 12:41Speaker 1: Bell is his professionalism, all right, his maturity, his work ethic,
- 12:46Speaker 1: his attitude, the way that he cares about the team
- 12:51Speaker 1: like Dom you know, and I've said this a million
- 12:53Speaker 1: times in this era with the portal, you worry when
- 12:56Speaker 1: you bring guys in, right, what they're gonna what's their motivation?
- 13:00Speaker 1: She's going to be And Skyler is he's a pro
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, TJ. He's a pro as a riah like
- 13:06Speaker 1: these guys are, like they handle themselves like pros, like
- 13:09Speaker 1: guys I'm used to being around. And that's I don't
- 13:13Speaker 1: want to say it's surprising, but it's like it's encouraging.
- 13:17Speaker 2: You'd love to see that, you know, even in.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Maryland where he had a hell of a game but
- 13:21Speaker 1: we lost, you know, he he he was not at all,
- 13:26Speaker 1: you know, like, hey, look at me. I did well,
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, but he just it was it was all
- 13:31Speaker 1: about the team, you know, and I love that. That's
- 13:34Speaker 1: what we have to have, you know, I have to
- 13:36Speaker 1: the game.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Last week, he'd said The Times wants to prove he's
- 13:40Speaker 3: one of the best proceivers in the country. How does
- 13:43Speaker 3: it make you feels like someone here thinking along those
- 13:47Speaker 3: months like can.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You do that more? Christian? I appreciate that, And so
- 13:53Speaker 1: far he's backing it up with his work ethic and
- 13:55Speaker 1: his attitude right, and his production has been really good.
- 13:59Speaker 1: He just got to keep doing it, and I'm confident
- 14:02Speaker 1: that he will, you know, and I really like the kid,
- 14:05Speaker 1: you know, I mean he My favorite play is so
- 14:08Speaker 1: far this season, by far, was Cam Edwards catching run
- 14:12Speaker 1: down the sideline. If you watch that play and you
- 14:15Speaker 1: watch it late, he blocks this guy not once, but
- 14:17Speaker 1: he blocks his guy twice and Cam gets in the
- 14:19Speaker 1: end zone, and so you know, sometimes receivers aren't going
- 14:21Speaker 1: to make that commitment. Here's a guy that's a darn
- 14:24Speaker 1: good downfield threat. He's a darn good guy with the
- 14:26Speaker 1: ball in his hands and getting yards after catch, and
- 14:28Speaker 1: then he commits to blocking down the field.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Like he does.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I mean, that's you know, those guys aren't easy to find,
- 14:34Speaker 1: so you really appreciate it.
- 14:36Speaker 3: You're working with the offense just kind of fall in
- 14:38Speaker 3: this game. I measurement, we must have been pretty positive
- 14:42Speaker 3: kind of going over that. What do you think that
- 14:43Speaker 3: means for the guys in that room to have a
- 14:46Speaker 3: chance to kind of review a performance where.
- 14:48Speaker 1: They do so well well, It does give you confidence.
- 14:53Speaker 1: You also have to look at it through a very
- 14:55Speaker 1: very very critical lens, you know, and you can never
- 14:59Speaker 1: gloss over them stakes that you made sure you celebrate
- 15:02Speaker 1: the great plays and you reinforce why it was a
- 15:04Speaker 1: good play, but you know it wasn't It wasn't good
- 15:08Speaker 1: enough yet, and we have to keep pushing for perfection.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And I felt that attitude really throughout the whole.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Team, you know.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I mean, that was fun to win. I mean, it's
- 15:18Speaker 1: fun to win, like that's that's what we work for.
- 15:20Speaker 1: But the last thing you ever want is to feel satisfied.
- 15:25Speaker 1: And I don't think our guys feel satisfied at all.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And I think, you know, having a challenge like Duke
- 15:30Speaker 1: coming right at us, you know that that gets you
- 15:33Speaker 1: right back in the right frame of mind.
- 15:35Speaker 2: And I felt that today.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I thought today was one of the better practices we've
- 15:38Speaker 1: had shoot in a long long time.
- 15:42Speaker 2: So that's a good thing. But it's got to carry
- 15:44Speaker 2: over to the game.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Speed being one of his main attributes, makes him such
- 15:51Speaker 3: a good skill play well.
- 15:54Speaker 1: His consistency catching the ball. You know, he doesn't drop
- 15:56Speaker 1: a lot of passes, and when he does, he can recover.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I think his ability to kind of move from play
- 16:02Speaker 1: to play, and the example would be the first play
- 16:04Speaker 1: of the game he catches that quick little slant, he
- 16:06Speaker 1: gets pretty good yardage. They call us for holding, We
- 16:09Speaker 1: bring it back, you know, and then he got right
- 16:12Speaker 1: to the next play, which was a big play down
- 16:13Speaker 1: the sidelines, you know, so not getting caught looking backwards,
- 16:17Speaker 1: you're looking forward to, staying in the moment. And then
- 16:19Speaker 1: I think that there's an element of toughness to him,
- 16:22Speaker 1: both mental and physical, that you know, you only really
- 16:26Speaker 1: get to see if you get to watch him practice
- 16:28Speaker 1: every day, or watch him in meetings every day, or
- 16:30Speaker 1: look at the look on his face every day, or
- 16:32Speaker 1: the way he takes notes every day, you know, or
- 16:34Speaker 1: the way you hear him talk to his teammates every day.
- 16:36Speaker 1: You know, he's just got Like I said, I go
- 16:38Speaker 1: back to what I told Dom is, there's there's a
- 16:40Speaker 1: level of professionalism and maturity there that lends itself to
- 16:44Speaker 1: the type of production that he's having. You know, when
- 16:46Speaker 1: you combine his skill with his work ethic was with
- 16:48Speaker 1: his maturity and professionalism, you're going to get a good player.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Sure, I know there's obviously a difference between the first
- 16:55Speaker 3: half and is versus the second half, But if you
- 17:00Speaker 3: learned anything about two quarterbacks from what do you see.
- 17:03Speaker 1: The changing the.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Well.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I feel like they're both comfortable doing the things that
- 17:08Speaker 1: we asked them to do. You know, I feel like
- 17:10Speaker 1: they both have a really good grasp of our system.
- 17:14Speaker 1: And you know, they're both a little bit different as
- 17:16Speaker 1: we know. Right Joe's a little bit more of a
- 17:18Speaker 1: pocket passer, although we saw that he can run. Nick,
- 17:22Speaker 1: you know, is a less experienced guy. He's got a
- 17:25Speaker 1: real high ceiling. He's good out of the pocket. You know,
- 17:29Speaker 1: obviously he doesn't have as many snaps and it was
- 17:31Speaker 1: unfortunately got hurt. But I like the fact that they
- 17:34Speaker 1: both understand they're fit in this system, and you know,
- 17:39Speaker 1: every snap they take, whether it's practice or game, they're
- 17:41Speaker 1: going to get a better feel for that. So you know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you come out of two games and you feel good
- 17:48Speaker 1: about two quarterbacks.
- 17:49Speaker 2: You know, that's a good thing.
- 17:50Speaker 1: You know, often they say, if you have two quarterbacks,
- 17:52Speaker 1: you don't have any Well I don't. I don't think
- 17:54Speaker 1: that's the case here right now. So that's a good
- 17:57Speaker 1: thing for us, especially the.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Interior together and has the line before.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Wes is.
- 18:11Speaker 1: He's very smart and he's he's very calm, and you
- 18:15Speaker 1: need that at your center. You need a calm presence.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You know, he's he's setting the protection calls. He's making
- 18:20Speaker 1: a lot of the calls up front in the run game. Uh.
- 18:23Speaker 1: He's an athletic guy who plays with with good pad level,
- 18:27Speaker 1: and in our run scheme, that's what you need. A
- 18:29Speaker 1: guy that can move his feet quickly, move latterly quickly,
- 18:32Speaker 1: get up to the second level, you know, get his
- 18:34Speaker 1: body on people. He's just kind of fit right into
- 18:37Speaker 1: what we're doing.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Uh.
- 18:40Speaker 1: And I wouldn't say they're performing better than I thought
- 18:43Speaker 1: they would. I have a lot of confidence in Gordie
- 18:47Speaker 1: as a coach. Uh. He has confidence uh in in
- 18:51Speaker 1: those guys. I have confidence in those guys. They have
- 18:54Speaker 1: confidence each other. You know, they're really a tight knit group.
- 18:57Speaker 1: When you've got two veteran tackles like we do in
- 18:59Speaker 1: Chase and Val, that's certainly helpful, you know. And then
- 19:04Speaker 1: to see guys like you know, uh Ben MORAUSEI come
- 19:07Speaker 1: along and another guy, you know, Brady Weyburn is really
- 19:11Speaker 1: coming along well. Uh, Jayden Bass is coming along. We've
- 19:14Speaker 1: got some younger guys that you know, getting We're able
- 19:18Speaker 1: to get them some plays and and watch them develop.
- 19:21Speaker 1: So uh, you know, when you lose three guys inside. Yeah,
- 19:25Speaker 1: you worry a little bit, but uh, you know I expected,
- 19:28Speaker 1: you know, based upon you know, kind of Gordy's evaluation
- 19:31Speaker 1: that that we'd be okay, and you know, so far
- 19:33Speaker 1: we are. We got to we got to keep getting
- 19:35Speaker 1: better though.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Along those lines, two games, no sacks, a lot of them.
- 19:39Speaker 2: To rework offensive line. What specifically are they doing well
- 19:43Speaker 2: in pass protection? Well? Working well together?
- 19:48Speaker 1: You know they all five and the back and the
- 19:50Speaker 1: tight end because they're all you know, involved in protection,
- 19:53Speaker 1: as are the receivers running good routes and the quarterback
- 19:55Speaker 1: getting rid of the ball on time. It's so much
- 19:58Speaker 1: more than just the offensive line, but specific the offensive line,
- 20:00Speaker 1: they're working well together. You know, there's not miscommunication. They're
- 20:04Speaker 1: doing a good job of id in you know, the
- 20:06Speaker 1: front and the potential blitz and getting the communication made
- 20:09Speaker 1: that needs to get made. And this is going to
- 20:12Speaker 1: be really difficult this week. These guys come after you. You know,
- 20:15Speaker 1: they're a pressure defense. They bring a lot of heat.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Uh and they bring some exotic heat. So uh, you know,
- 20:21Speaker 1: you get these guys in in third and or they
- 20:24Speaker 1: get you in third and shorter, third and four, third
- 20:26Speaker 1: and five, third, and six. I mean they're upwards of
- 20:28Speaker 1: eighty percent pressure. So there's a it's a real it's
- 20:32Speaker 1: a real challenge.
- 20:33Speaker 2: We'll see how we do.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Cloud's sake, because there's a vision. But if Nick is
- 20:40Speaker 3: cleared and he gets enough working this week.
- 20:42Speaker 1: As he's still start, if he has a good week,
- 20:46Speaker 1: if he has a good week, yes, I'm not gonna
- 20:49Speaker 1: play choy with that. My philosophy has always been, you
- 20:52Speaker 1: pick a quarterback and you go with him and uh
- 20:55Speaker 1: until you don't, right, And I said that before you know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you support the hell out of him and tell until
- 20:59Speaker 1: it's time to make could change. And look, we all
- 21:01Speaker 1: appreciate the job that Joe did. I mean, it was unbelievable.
- 21:04Speaker 1: And yet we you know, over the course of four
- 21:08Speaker 1: week camp, we decided Nick was our quarterback. And I
- 21:11Speaker 1: know that if if Nick's called upon, he'll be ready.
- 21:16Speaker 1: And he has to prove that to us this week
- 21:17Speaker 1: that he's ready. And I know that if Joe's called upon,
- 21:21Speaker 1: we've seen that he'll be ready, you know. And I
- 21:23Speaker 1: can't say enough about Joe and the way he handled
- 21:26Speaker 1: the disappointment of not being named the starter, got himself
- 21:29Speaker 1: prepared and then when he had that chance. He came
- 21:31Speaker 1: out and he's performed, you know, really for sixth court
- 21:34Speaker 1: where you know, I don't think he played much in
- 21:36Speaker 1: the he playing in the fourth quarter. I don't know
- 21:37Speaker 1: if he played in the fourth quarter, but every quarter
- 21:39Speaker 1: he's played, he's had some production.
- 21:41Speaker 2: All right, Thanks everyone, Appreciate you guys.
