Latest / Foul Territory / Which General Managers/PBOs should actually be on the HOT seat?
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's have an open discussion about GM slash president of
- 0:08Speaker 1: baseball ops under the hot seat. Some of this kicked
- 0:11Speaker 1: off by our conversation about managers on the hot seat.
- 0:14Speaker 1: We did a separate segment and video on that. So
- 0:16Speaker 1: if you want to check it out, go for it,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but let's talk. And let me lay out a couple
- 0:19Speaker 1: of names that we're going to get to Nick crawl,
- 0:23Speaker 1: David Stearns, Mike Elias, but KP, I'm going to kick
- 0:26Speaker 1: it to you first to add a couple more to
- 0:29Speaker 1: the table and we'll get thoughts from the crowd here.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Who do you want me to add? I was talking
- 0:35Speaker 2: about Chris Young or Ross, whoever you would put in
- 0:39Speaker 2: the position, Texas Rangers. And then I threw David Stearns
- 0:42Speaker 2: into that conversation too.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Okay.
- 0:45Speaker 2: I guess my criteria would be with the Texas Rangers. Yes,
- 0:51Speaker 2: you're always going to be remembered for what you did
- 0:53Speaker 2: and you brought the first World Series to Texas, right? Right.
- 0:57Speaker 2: But how long do you get to pass after that?
- 0:59Speaker 2: This team hasn't been back to the postseason since. They
- 1:02Speaker 2: go out and win a World Series. They haven't been
- 1:03Speaker 2: back since. They have the roster in place to do it.
- 1:06Speaker 2: They brought in Bruce Bochy. He wins them a World Series,
- 1:09Speaker 2: and then they get rid of Bruce Bochy, and they
- 1:11Speaker 2: hire Skip Schumacher, and everything's great. It was probably time
- 1:14Speaker 2: to get a new manager there too. But if they
- 1:17Speaker 2: don't miss the postseason, who's to blame? Do you blame
- 1:20Speaker 2: the manager? Do you blame the players? Do you blame
- 1:22Speaker 2: the roster? Someone has to be blamed for it, right?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Because I'm just wondering how long do you get a pass?
- 1:29Speaker 2: You win a World Series, and how long does that
- 1:31Speaker 2: pass last? Is it a lifetime pass? Is it two
- 1:34Speaker 2: or three years that you're allowed to miss the postseason after?
- 1:36Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm asking you guys.
- 1:40Speaker 4: First of all, KP, let me say this. You love
- 1:41Speaker 4: the Rangers, okay? I want everyone to know that you
- 1:45Speaker 4: absolutely love the Rangers, okay?
- 1:46Speaker 2: I do. I do. Okay, good.
- 1:48Speaker 4: I just want to make that clear because we want
- 1:51Speaker 4: everyone to know that you love the Rangers. Chris Young
- 1:53Speaker 4: at least gets a couple more years. I think they
- 1:56Speaker 4: won in 23. It's only been three years since they've won.
- 2:00Speaker 3: They're in the playoff race.
- 2:02Speaker 4: They've had injuries. That's the excuse every team is going
- 2:04Speaker 4: to use. They lost their TV deal. They weren't able
- 2:06Speaker 4: to make that money. So I think he's going to
- 2:09Speaker 4: get at least another two years. And I don't think
- 2:11Speaker 4: Chris Young is in danger this year of losing his
- 2:13Speaker 4: job at all. I think he's safe. They've made some
- 2:16Speaker 4: good moves. They're in the playoff race. Now can the
- 2:19Speaker 4: players perform? That's what it's going to come down to
- 2:21Speaker 4: for me.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and I agree with you too. I guess my
- 2:24Speaker 2: criteria is, you know, they did go out and they
- 2:26Speaker 2: made a great move in getting Brandon Nimmo, right? So like,
- 2:29Speaker 2: it's not, I'm a big believer, and we're going to
- 2:32Speaker 2: get to the next guy, David Stearns, because I do
- 2:34Speaker 2: believe roster construction is really important. And what have you
- 2:39Speaker 2: done for me recently? Did you go out and help
- 2:40Speaker 2: our team? Did you go out and improve our team?
- 2:42Speaker 2: And bringing in a guy like Brandon Nimmo has definitely
- 2:45Speaker 2: helped their team. When you're sitting up there in your
- 2:48Speaker 2: ivory tower, there's only so much you can do in
- 2:50Speaker 2: order to get your guys to perform. At the end
- 2:53Speaker 2: of the day, it's on the players. It's on their
- 2:56Speaker 2: shoulders if you don't go out and win games. So
- 2:57Speaker 2: I do agree with you there, but that was kind
- 3:00Speaker 2: of the bigger thing. It's not because I dislike the franchise,
- 3:03Speaker 2: that I'm not a CY fan. I live here in Texas.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I root for them. I want them to do well.
- 3:08Speaker 2: If it's between them and the Blue Jays, I choose
- 3:09Speaker 2: the Blue Jays, but there's no hard feelings. My question
- 3:12Speaker 2: was more about how long do you get a pass
- 3:15Speaker 2: after winning a World Series and and not even getting
- 3:17Speaker 2: back to the postseason.
- 3:18Speaker 5: I think as we go through this, I'm going to
- 3:21Speaker 5: say my opinion about Texas, and maybe you agree, maybe
- 3:24Speaker 5: you don't. I don't think the team has gotten worse
- 3:28Speaker 5: in the sense of, like, this is concerning, and these
- 3:32Speaker 5: are decisions that are being made by the general manager,
- 3:35Speaker 5: by the president of baseball operations. But, you know, you
- 3:39Speaker 5: watch the team more. To me, it looks like they
- 3:41Speaker 5: tried to address the issue of can't hit four-seam fastballs.
- 3:45Speaker 5: They brought in Kyle Higashioka to be a backup catcher,
- 3:48Speaker 5: Jock Peterson, Jake Berger. You know what? They had kind
- 3:53Speaker 5: of an albatross of a contract in Marcus Simeon. They
- 3:56Speaker 5: brought in Nimmo for that, like you had mentioned. Do
- 3:59Speaker 5: you feel like they have addressed issues and then the
- 4:02Speaker 5: players just haven't won on the field?
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, they tried everything even last year when
- 4:08Speaker 2: I was here. I mean, they didn't like the way
- 4:11Speaker 2: you know, Donnie Eckler was running the hitting meetings or
- 4:15Speaker 2: the philosophy they had. So they got rid of them
- 4:17Speaker 2: and then they hired within. They brought in different hitting coaches.
- 4:20Speaker 2: They went out and they've definitely brought in players. It's
- 4:24Speaker 2: not a lack of being able to go out and
- 4:27Speaker 2: improve your roster. You mentioned all those guys. They go
- 4:29Speaker 2: out and get Mackenzie Gore this year to, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 2: add to their already really good rotation with Jacob deGrom
- 4:36Speaker 2: and Nathan Evaldi and Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker. Like,
- 4:40Speaker 2: they went out and made the moves, you know? So yeah,
- 4:42Speaker 2: at the end of the day, my bigger question was
- 4:46Speaker 2: just how long did you get that pass for? Whether
- 4:47Speaker 2: it's this year, next year, two years from now, it
- 4:51Speaker 2: felt worthy at least bringing up. And it's not because
- 4:54Speaker 2: I dislike the organization. It's just, it was more curious
- 4:57Speaker 2: because yes, he's done a good job in going out
- 5:01Speaker 2: and making moves to bring in a Mackenzie Gore and
- 5:03Speaker 2: a Brandon Nimmo. And like you said, addressing a certain
- 5:07Speaker 2: area of, a weakness that they had in hitting four-seam
- 5:10Speaker 2: fastballs and going out and getting the guys that you mentioned. So, yeah,
- 5:15Speaker 2: it was more just a question I had to you guys.
- 5:17Speaker 2: How long do you get a pass after winning a
- 5:18Speaker 2: World Series? And some of these other guys on this
- 5:22Speaker 2: list don't have that, you know, they don't have a
- 5:26Speaker 2: World Series championship that is keeping them employed for maybe
- 5:30Speaker 2: a longer period than they probably deserve.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Eric Kratz.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You're smart. You were a catcher in Major League Baseball
- 5:37Speaker 1: for a long time. You need to be smart to
- 5:39Speaker 1: be a catcher. And you also need to be smart
- 5:42Speaker 1: to get the best possible wireless plan that you can get.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Don't fall for the gimmicks or certain types of sign-up bonuses.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Just give me the cheap rate and the premium wireless.
- 5:55Speaker 5: That's what Mint Mobile gives us. And you don't pay
- 5:58Speaker 5: a lot and you get a lot. Seems like a no-brainer,
- 6:02Speaker 5: even for what you said, a smart guy.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Yep, be smart. Get your new wireless plan for just
- 6:07Speaker 1: $ 15 a month. Go to mintmobile.com slash territory. Cut your
- 6:10Speaker 1: wireless bill to $ 15 a month at mintmobile.com slash territory.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Upfront payment of $ 45 for three months, $ 90 for six months,
- 6:17Speaker 1: or $ 180 for 12 months plan required. $ 15 per month equivalent.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only. Greater than
- 6:25Speaker 1: 50 gigabytes may slow when network is busy. Includes up
- 6:28Speaker 1: to 20 gigabyte hotspot. Capable device required. Availability, speed, and
- 6:32Speaker 1: coverage varies. See mintmobile.com. All right, let's talk David Stearns.
- 6:38Speaker 1: That was the next name that you brought up, so
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'll let you state the case there while I tell
- 6:43Speaker 1: everyone the likelihood that he is back is probably in
- 6:48Speaker 1: the 80% to 90% range. I mean, I know sometimes
- 6:53Speaker 1: when someone comes out and says something, it's the dreaded
- 6:56Speaker 1: vote of confidence, but it did appear genuine that owner
- 7:00Speaker 1: Steve Cohen said, hey, he's going to get another year
- 7:04Speaker 1: here to write out the contract and do whatever the
- 7:07Speaker 1: contract was, what five-year plan, do his thing.
- 7:11Speaker 2: No, I mean, I agree with you. He's probably not
- 7:13Speaker 2: going to, but in terms of people that you can
- 7:16Speaker 2: make an argument and it would be maybe justified that
- 7:19Speaker 2: maybe they, they do get fired. To me, it really
- 7:22Speaker 2: comes down to roster construction. You just put too many
- 7:25Speaker 2: guys in positions that they've never really played before. And you,
- 7:28Speaker 2: and then you'll talk about run prevention and you're talking
- 7:31Speaker 2: about having a first baseman who's never played first base,
- 7:34Speaker 2: you're moving Boba Shett, a shortstop who had to learn
- 7:37Speaker 2: second base due to an injury during the post season.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Now putting them at third base, it just seemed odd to, um,
- 7:44Speaker 2: you know, talk about roster construction and then go out
- 7:48Speaker 2: and do something like that. And then the idea that
- 7:51Speaker 2: you have Steve Cohen and, and potentially there's blank check
- 7:54Speaker 2: to go out and go out and get the best
- 7:56Speaker 2: players in the world and not bring a guy like
- 7:59Speaker 2: Pete Alonzo back, um, for whatever reason, a guy who's
- 8:03Speaker 2: beloved there, who has performed in New York. And that's
- 8:07Speaker 2: also another thing that's not maybe factored in a lot
- 8:10Speaker 2: for some of these other players. If you've never played
- 8:13Speaker 2: in New York, it's just a different beast. And when
- 8:15Speaker 2: you have a guy like Pete Alonzo, who's only ever
- 8:18Speaker 2: performed under those bright lights of New York City, and
- 8:22Speaker 2: you let him walk out the door, you can make
- 8:24Speaker 2: an argument for his job. And I know Crassius probably
- 8:27Speaker 2: has a difference of opinion because He has history with
- 8:30Speaker 2: him and trusts his plan. But it just feels like
- 8:33Speaker 2: when you try to implement sort of this small market
- 8:37Speaker 2: idea that maybe worked in a small market and you
- 8:39Speaker 2: take it to a big market like New York City
- 8:42Speaker 2: and it doesn't work out, someone's got to be to blame.
- 8:46Speaker 5: And obviously it's going to fall on Stern's shoulder. Unless,
- 8:50Speaker 5: is there a way he can salvage it this offseason,
- 8:54Speaker 5: in your opinion?
- 8:57Speaker 2: I mean, are we playing this season? I mean, are
- 9:00Speaker 2: we acting under the assumption that, you know, normal free
- 9:04Speaker 2: agency and stuff? I mean, you got to go build
- 9:06Speaker 2: a rotation. You got to maybe go even go overspend
- 9:09Speaker 2: or trade, dip into that prospect pool that you may
- 9:14Speaker 2: have and go out and get some starting pitching, no
- 9:16Speaker 2: matter what the cost is.
- 9:17Speaker 5: So no. So then the answer is no, because he
- 9:20Speaker 5: has not ever dipped into free agent pitching. He is not,
- 9:23Speaker 5: he doesn't like... He doesn't allow that five, I mean,
- 9:27Speaker 5: not even five or three plus year deals to happen.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Well, then if he's not willing to do that, then
- 9:35Speaker 2: probably not. I mean, I think that's the only way
- 9:37Speaker 2: he could do it. And potentially does he, I think
- 9:40Speaker 2: there's a way he can operate sort of under this
- 9:43Speaker 2: idea of, hey, I came from a small market and
- 9:45Speaker 2: I was very successful and this is the way that
- 9:47Speaker 2: we did it. And we're going to continue to do
- 9:49Speaker 2: a lot of those things. We're going to build within,
- 9:51Speaker 2: we're going to, You know, spend a lot of time
- 9:54Speaker 2: and money and resources in developing our players at the
- 9:57Speaker 2: lower levels of the minor leagues up through the minor leagues.
- 10:00Speaker 2: but also act like you're in New York city and
- 10:03Speaker 2: you have an owner that's wanting to desperately bring a
- 10:06Speaker 2: world series back to the city of New York for
- 10:08Speaker 2: the Mets. Can he blend those two? I don't know.
- 10:11Speaker 2: You know him better than I do. Yeah.
- 10:15Speaker 3: KP. I love it, but I think there's a 0% chance.
- 10:21Speaker 4: That David Stearns gets fired this offseason because he's going
- 10:24Speaker 4: to use the same excuse that all GMs use. First
- 10:26Speaker 4: of all, it was his first year really in charge, right?
- 10:30Speaker 4: So he's going to say, okay, we made some mistakes,
- 10:32Speaker 4: but I'm going to learn from him and I'm going
- 10:34Speaker 4: to get better. And, you know, so-and-so saying that didn't
- 10:37Speaker 4: work out. He wasn't my signing or whatever the excuses
- 10:41Speaker 4: that they're going to use.
- 10:43Speaker 3: And I think that.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Also when you talk about David Stearns, You talk about
- 10:49Speaker 4: Steve Cohen. If he says, oh, well, Steve Cohen didn't work,
- 10:52Speaker 4: then that's admitting a mistake. And you know these guys,
- 10:54Speaker 4: they don't like to admit they're wrong very often. And
- 10:57Speaker 4: when you say small market to a big market, well,
- 10:59Speaker 4: Andrew Friedman went from Tampa to Los Angeles. The difference
- 11:05Speaker 4: is Andrew Friedman adapted quickly, right? David Stearns is still
- 11:09Speaker 4: using the same mentality. Andrew Friedman said, man, I've got
- 11:13Speaker 4: all these resources. I'm going to use them, right? I'm
- 11:15Speaker 4: going to go make these big deals. I'm going to
- 11:17Speaker 4: go sign long-term contracts. I'm going to go get superstars.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Where David Stearns thinks that the Milwaukee philosophy, well, as
- 11:24Speaker 4: great as it is, and Matt Arnold's carried it over,
- 11:27Speaker 4: might not work in New York. Because one thing about
- 11:29Speaker 4: New York, and you played there and you know this,
- 11:32Speaker 4: New York wants stars. They want stars. They want stars
- 11:35Speaker 4: on their team. And with Soto and Lindor, they have
- 11:37Speaker 4: two stars, but they need a star on the pitching mound.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Whether that's Nolan McClain he becomes at, Or if they
- 11:42Speaker 4: have to go out and pay for it, it's a
- 11:43Speaker 4: Tarek school or something like that.
- 11:45Speaker 3: At some point, you have to go get stars.
- 11:48Speaker 2: No, I couldn't agree with you more. And I do
- 11:50Speaker 2: agree with you. I just felt like it was worth
- 11:52Speaker 2: discussing his name because, you know, anything that happens in
- 11:56Speaker 2: New York is much bigger. And, yeah, I don't think
- 12:00Speaker 2: he gets fired. I think year one, for a lot
- 12:03Speaker 2: of those reasons you said, too, it's the owner admitting, hey,
- 12:06Speaker 2: I made a mistake in hiring this guy in. Rightfully so.
- 12:09Speaker 2: He probably does deserve more than, you know, really this
- 12:13Speaker 2: is his first year kind of being in charge. And
- 12:15Speaker 2: I know a lot of the guys will say, hey,
- 12:17Speaker 2: some of these guys I didn't even sign. They're not
- 12:19Speaker 2: my guys. Allow me some time to do what I'm
- 12:22Speaker 2: supposed to do. My concern is if he doesn't adapt
- 12:25Speaker 2: quickly enough to the point you made about Andrew Friedman.
- 12:29Speaker 2: You know, how long does he last in New York
- 12:31Speaker 2: if he's trying to operate a big city like a
- 12:34Speaker 2: small market? Because once again, New York City wants its stars.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Let's go down to one of the teams you played
- 12:43Speaker 5: against in the Baltimore Orioles, Mike Elias. Mike Elias has
- 12:46Speaker 5: said all these things all these years. We can't get
- 12:49Speaker 5: rid of these prospects. Wow, what a system we have.
- 12:54Speaker 5: That system is now separated in the big leagues, and
- 13:00Speaker 5: it's not been happening, and he has not made the
- 13:02Speaker 5: moves yet. that possibly should or could keep his job?
- 13:08Speaker 5: Should he be brought or should he be kept on
- 13:12Speaker 5: to continue? I don't even know what it would be called.
- 13:14Speaker 5: It's not another rebuild. It's just another run it back
- 13:17Speaker 5: type of situation.
- 13:20Speaker 2: No, and I think they're far away from a rebuild
- 13:22Speaker 2: because they're a team that's not finishing at the bottom.
- 13:25Speaker 2: They're just missing the postseason, which is probably the worst
- 13:28Speaker 2: place to be. But is he worthy of keeping his job?
- 13:32Speaker 2: I think that's debatable. I think maybe he missed the
- 13:37Speaker 2: window of opportunity a couple years ago when they had
- 13:41Speaker 2: the best prospects in baseball and they were kind of
- 13:44Speaker 2: pushing that envelope of winning the division, getting into the postseason,
- 13:49Speaker 2: going on this long postseason run, really maybe overvaluing some
- 13:53Speaker 2: of these prospects that they had. And I do think
- 13:56Speaker 2: some of these same prospects that they were unwilling to
- 13:58Speaker 2: trade a couple years ago are now finally performing at
- 14:03Speaker 2: a level that maybe they thought they would get to
- 14:05Speaker 2: three or four years later. And then the Adley-Rushman trade
- 14:09Speaker 2: is a little bit interesting to me, too. You know,
- 14:11Speaker 2: you had this opportunity to go out and trade some
- 14:14Speaker 2: of these prospects to improve your roster, to give yourself
- 14:18Speaker 2: the best opportunity to win a World Series. Because at
- 14:21Speaker 2: the end of the day, that's what we're trying to do.
- 14:23Speaker 2: We're trying to win a World Series. We're not necessarily
- 14:25Speaker 2: trying to build for the future. There's a way of
- 14:28Speaker 2: doing both, and sometimes you're going to have to sell
- 14:30Speaker 2: some of those prospects in order to make your major
- 14:32Speaker 2: league roster better. But the Adley-Rushman thing to me is
- 14:35Speaker 2: a little bit interesting. Yes, do they have a catcher
- 14:38Speaker 2: in-house that is able to seamlessly kind of take over
- 14:42Speaker 2: for Adley-Rushman, but the timing of which they decide to
- 14:47Speaker 2: get rid of Adley and to trade him within the
- 14:50Speaker 2: division to a team that you're now going to have
- 14:52Speaker 2: to see him– what was it, 13 times next year
- 14:56Speaker 2: as well, is a bit interesting to me.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Back in the day, Kratzy and I were looking for tickets.
- 15:03Speaker 6: It was so hard to find a seat or anything available.
- 15:06Speaker 6: You'd have to go online and there was nothing there.
- 15:08Speaker 6: But now with SeatGeek, they make it so much easier
- 15:12Speaker 6: for you. They have the green light special. What does
- 15:14Speaker 6: that mean? It means when the green light is on,
- 15:16Speaker 6: you can get some of the best seats available. Go
- 15:19Speaker 6: to SeatGeek. Kratzy understands how easy it is.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Yeah, I know you used to scalp your tickets, but look,
- 15:24Speaker 5: it's way, way better now because you get to just
- 15:26Speaker 5: go right on SeatGeek and find your postseason tickets. I'm
- 15:30Speaker 5: not even going to fast forward to the postseason. I'm
- 15:32Speaker 5: going to say the run to October because some teams
- 15:35Speaker 5: aren't in yet, so right now is the time to
- 15:37Speaker 5: get it, and those seats are available.
- 15:39Speaker 6: And it's playoff time, the best time for baseball. And,
- 15:42Speaker 6: of course, I have a code for you all. You
- 15:44Speaker 6: can use code TERRITORY10 for 10% off your next set
- 15:47Speaker 6: of MLB tickets at SeatGeek. That's 10% off MLB tickets
- 15:51Speaker 6: with promo code TERRITORY10. Make sure you click the link
- 15:54Speaker 6: in the description to download the app and have the
- 15:57Speaker 6: code automatically added to your account so you can use
- 16:00Speaker 6: it later.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'll throw it to AJ for a moment.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Just a quick clarification, too, in case some people were
- 16:07Speaker 1: bringing it up. We know it's three years for Stearns.
- 16:09Speaker 1: This is his third year on the job. Just going
- 16:11Speaker 1: back to him for a moment, right? So he started
- 16:13Speaker 1: October 2, 2023. But I thought he was there for.
- 16:16Speaker 3: A year or two.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Um, where he just was kind of not in charge.
- 16:23Speaker 4: He was there, but he really couldn't do anything.
- 16:25Speaker 1: No, no, he was, he was, that was time bloom.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Stearns was sorry.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I'm sick. So excuse whatever I say today.
- 16:33Speaker 2: It's, it can't be. Yeah, no, that's right.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Uh, Stearns, we all knew Stearns was going to land
- 16:38Speaker 1: that right. He had a little in between period, um,
- 16:42Speaker 1: where he stepped away and everyone was like waiting for it. But,
- 16:46Speaker 1: That's when it happened, right? Kratz, didn't he take a
- 16:50Speaker 1: year or so?
- 16:52Speaker 5: He left the Brewers when he traded, after he traded Hader.
- 16:56Speaker 5: And that was like, I didn't really think it was
- 16:59Speaker 5: going to reverberate. So that was kind of his like,
- 17:01Speaker 5: I'm stepping away type of thing. And then everyone's like,
- 17:04Speaker 5: probably going to the Mets.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And he did. So anyway, yeah, three years for him.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Some can call it early, some can call it late,
- 17:12Speaker 1: but also second biggest payroll. in baseball and you're sporting
- 17:15Speaker 1: a top three payroll every year, the expectation should be
- 17:18Speaker 1: pretty high that you've got to get this done in, uh,
- 17:21Speaker 1: you know, three to five year window. I mean, really
- 17:23Speaker 1: by next year, if you're not looking like a good
- 17:26Speaker 1: playoff team, somebody else should be figuring out how to
- 17:29Speaker 1: spend that kind of money. Um, but AJ, Michael, yeah,
- 17:33Speaker 1: I will pick you.
- 17:34Speaker 3: I love spending other people's money. I love spending other
- 17:37Speaker 3: people's money.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Um, when you talk about Mike Elias, I was just
- 17:41Speaker 4: in Baltimore, uh, Last week I talked to Mike. Listen,
- 17:47Speaker 4: he says all the right things. He does all the
- 17:48Speaker 4: right things. I'm going to say this about Mike Elias.
- 17:50Speaker 4: I think the new ownership group really likes Mike Elias.
- 17:53Speaker 4: And because of this run they went on at the
- 17:55Speaker 4: end of the year, I think that's why he saves
- 17:57Speaker 4: his job. Because they traded Adley. Okay, they have Basayo.
- 18:01Speaker 3: They got Narvaez. They love Narvaez. They love Basayo. But
- 18:05Speaker 3: the pitchers they got, they are going to hype up
- 18:07Speaker 3: to the end of the earth. And Mike Elias is
- 18:09Speaker 3: going to say, just wait until these guys get here.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Wait till we sign Braddish to a long term. Probably
- 18:13Speaker 3: not going to sign Trevor Rogers, but we've got these
- 18:15Speaker 3: pitchers from the Red Sox. They're in our division. Look
- 18:17Speaker 3: at what all they gave us for Adley.
- 18:19Speaker 4: When we have two other, we got another catcher from
- 18:22Speaker 4: the Red Sox and we have Messiah we've already signed.
- 18:24Speaker 4: So I think he's going to stay around because of
- 18:26Speaker 4: those reasons. And I think the ownership group really likes him.
- 18:29Speaker 4: The new ownership group. They think he's done a good
- 18:31Speaker 4: job talking to the people that I talked to.
- 18:34Speaker 2: I mean, fair too. I mean, I think he's done
- 18:37Speaker 2: a good enough job in terms of, Signing up some
- 18:41Speaker 2: of those guys. Shane Boz is another guy that they
- 18:43Speaker 2: signed up. So he was able to keep some of
- 18:46Speaker 2: these guys. And obviously the Pete Alonzo deal has really
- 18:49Speaker 2: worked out for them as well, too. But when you
- 18:52Speaker 2: think about the potential window that they had maybe a
- 18:55Speaker 2: couple years ago, and we've just kind of been waiting
- 18:57Speaker 2: for this Baltimore Orioles team to take the next step.
- 19:00Speaker 2: We've all heard about these young prospects. Then you go
- 19:03Speaker 2: out and get a guy like Pete Alonzo. You go
- 19:05Speaker 2: out and you kind of sign, go out and get
- 19:07Speaker 2: a Shane Ball. You get him to sign up there
- 19:09Speaker 2: for the long haul. Same with Kyle Braddish. He's doing
- 19:14Speaker 2: some great things there, but how much patience is the
- 19:18Speaker 2: fan base going to have?
- 19:20Speaker 1: Last one I wanted to do in the Midwest, actually,
- 19:22Speaker 1: a team that's not getting talked about for a good
- 19:25Speaker 1: chunk of the year because they just haven't been in it.
- 19:27Speaker 1: But the Reds, and this was brought up in Robert Murray,
- 19:30Speaker 1: one of our insiders and a fan side of He
- 19:32Speaker 1: wrote after the deadline, there was plenty of criticism for
- 19:35Speaker 1: what the Reds didn't do. And remember, Jim Bowden, former
- 19:38Speaker 1: Reds GM, came on our show and was like, yeah,
- 19:39Speaker 1: they were taking sleeping pills. And in this article from
- 19:43Speaker 1: Robert Murray, he said the asking price was high and
- 19:47Speaker 1: organizations were stunned for Tyler Steele. Tyler Stevenson is about
- 19:51Speaker 1: to hit free agency. You cannot keep an asset like
- 19:55Speaker 1: that if he's going to hit that. And I mean,
- 19:58Speaker 1: maybe you're thinking you're going to extend him.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Other than that, I mean, this is not a team
- 20:04Speaker 1: that can be like, we're just going to keep him
- 20:06Speaker 1: for fun. Like they're not in it. Why would they
- 20:08Speaker 1: do that? And I'm wondering if the red should be
- 20:12Speaker 1: under the microscope a little bit here.
- 20:14Speaker 3: KP, Ellie De.
- 20:15Speaker 1: La Cruz getting close to free agency.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Right?
- 20:18Speaker 1: Yeah, like you need to sell at the deadline.
- 20:20Speaker 2: And I think it's the classic case of potentially overvaluating
- 20:24Speaker 2: either a prospect or a current guy on your roster. Obviously,
- 20:28Speaker 2: you are trying to potentially take advantage of another team
- 20:31Speaker 2: who may be desperate for the catching position or the
- 20:35Speaker 2: first base position or starting position that you have. And
- 20:38Speaker 2: this year, you know, with how many teams were in
- 20:41Speaker 2: the playoff race, it was definitely a seller's market. You
- 20:44Speaker 2: had the ability to go out and sell these players,
- 20:46Speaker 2: but to ultimately hold on to a player that could
- 20:50Speaker 2: have brought you at least some value back that more
- 20:53Speaker 2: than likely you're probably not going to be able to extend.
- 20:56Speaker 2: He's going to test the waters in free agency. I mean,
- 20:58Speaker 2: if it hasn't happened at this point, what makes you
- 21:01Speaker 2: believe that it's going to happen between now and the
- 21:03Speaker 2: end of the year? And if I'm a player like
- 21:06Speaker 2: Tyler Stevenson, who's, gone through the system, who's served his time,
- 21:10Speaker 2: and finally gets an opportunity to be a free agent,
- 21:13Speaker 2: why wouldn't he test the free agent market? So, you know,
- 21:15Speaker 2: there's probably a number of other things that we could
- 21:18Speaker 2: come up with over the last couple of years of
- 21:21Speaker 2: why Nick Kroll potentially deserves to be let go. But,
- 21:25Speaker 2: you know, you're talking recent history of maybe overvaluating a
- 21:29Speaker 2: catcher who's not necessarily having an all-star type of year,
- 21:32Speaker 2: and maybe you're asking for an all-star type of return
- 21:35Speaker 2: for him. to me is something that you would have
- 21:38Speaker 2: to look at as the president or even the owner
- 21:41Speaker 2: of the team.
- 21:42Speaker 6: Yep.
- 21:43Speaker 1: I'm with you. And I know, yeah, the receiving stats
- 21:47Speaker 1: are not perfect, but the bat's pretty good, and it's
- 21:50Speaker 1: still a big league catcher that I think could have
- 21:53Speaker 1: helped out a team. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the
- 21:55Speaker 1: Reds didn't feel like anyone was really offering them anything.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But I'm with you. I mean, the Reds, they've been
- 22:01Speaker 1: a massive disappointment this year. All right, so that's it.
- 22:04Speaker 1: kp good stuff man thanks for the extended time good
- 22:06Speaker 1: to see you dude see you guys anytime
