- 0:28performance limits are in the mind or if performance setbacks
- 0:32are mental? Well, fortunately for all
- 0:35athletes and coaches, blood don't lie.
- 0:38Hi, this is Shannon Grady, sports physiologist, CEO and
- 0:42founder of the Mybaya app and author of The Lactate
- 0:45Revolution. Let me start today's episode
- 0:48with a short story from about 10 years ago.
- 0:51I had the parents of a very talented high school junior
- 0:55reached out to me concerned that their son was struggling with
- 0:57performances for the last 18 months.
- 1:01He was running about mid four 30s for the mile when he had
- 1:05already run 415 as a freshman. Now 430 doesn't seem that bad,
- 1:11but he had run 415 two years earlier.
- 1:15The athlete who worked hard, hammered tons of tempos and
- 1:19threshold training, never shield away from hard work, pretty much
- 1:23lived and breathed running, was being told that his subpar
- 1:26performances were quote a mental weakness.
- 1:32When his parents told me this, I had asked if they had any
- 1:35physiological data to prove if his performances were mental or
- 1:39physical because blood don't lie.
- 1:43They looked at me perplexed. This is when I explained that my
- 1:47physiological profile test protocol and analysis, which
- 1:50offers an in depth insights into an athlete's physiological and
- 1:55bioenergetic statics, has a direct correlation with the
- 1:58ability to perform at certain levels.
- 2:01I explained if we just did this simple test right on the track,
- 2:05we can rule out whether his performances declines were
- 2:10mental or physical. So a few days later I performed
- 2:13this athlete's first physiological profile test,
- 2:16which happened to be March of his junior year.
- 2:20His testing shockingly indicated that no matter how hard he tried
- 2:25or had, or how or no matter how hard he pushed himself or how
- 2:31strong mentally he was, he was never going to be able to run a
- 2:35sub 430 mile. This is just simply given his
- 2:38current physiological and bioenergetic status, he
- 2:43essentially only had 50% of the necessary energy he needed to
- 2:48run his previous times. So his parents were like, well,
- 2:53what do we do from here? So I created a training plan for
- 2:57this athlete based on his current physiological profile
- 3:00test and within six weeks, without doing anything else, we
- 3:04didn't do any mental training, we didn't adjust his sleep, we
- 3:07didn't adjust his diet. We simply adjusted his training
- 3:10to match his Physiology and within six weeks he was able to
- 3:15drop right back down to a 415 mile and by the end of the next
- 3:19indoor season, he ended up running a 409, setting a new
- 3:23Pennsylvania State record for the indoor season.
- 3:26And he literally went from struggling to break 4:30 to
- 3:30easily running a sub 410. This simple test was literally a
- 3:35game changer. By simply A showing and
- 3:38understanding how to apply lactate data can easily turn
- 3:42frustration into progress. Further details on this specific
- 3:47athlete's journey can be found in my book The Lactate
- 3:50Revolution Chapter 10 called Diagnostic Performance
- 3:54Monitoring. Think it's mental?
- 3:55Fortunately, blood don't lie. Now you may be thinking, how can
- 4:01you tell all of this from lactate data?
- 4:04Because most of the general population, even sports
- 4:09scientists and coaches and athletes, just assume lactate is
- 4:13something that builds up and makes your muscles burn, or
- 4:17they're just simply looking for their lactate threshold and
- 4:20trying to improve upon that. But after this simple lactate
- 4:25test, which again I termed the physiological profile test, I
- 4:29pointed out that lactate was not the enemy.
- 4:33All he lacked was the ability to produce enough lactate across a
- 4:37wide enough range to run faster and achieve his performance
- 4:41goals. As I mentioned in my previous
- 4:44episode, lactate's a unit of energy, and in order to produce
- 4:49energy fast enough to run certain times, you're going to
- 4:53need lactate across a wide enough spectrum in order to even
- 4:57have a chance to run as fast as you're trying to.
- 5:01This athlete was training primarily to focus on improving
- 5:05his lactate threshold, but pushing that as much as he
- 5:09could, when in fact that approach lowered his ability to
- 5:14run fast. And when I shifted his training,
- 5:18we actually intentionally reduced his quote UN quote
- 5:22lactate threshold in order to give him a chance to run fast.
- 5:28The spectrum of lactate is, is really important and it's
- 5:33something I have termed the physiological range, which is
- 5:36simply the difference between your Max maximum lactate and
- 5:40your minimum lactate. And your physiological range
- 5:43needs to be at a certain point for performance, for optimizing
- 5:48performance in any event. And as I said, this athlete was
- 5:52had a physiological range that was range that was 50% of what
- 5:56he needed in order to run a 430 mile.
- 6:01Again, lactate's not the enemy. It's an athlete's best chance of
- 6:04success if trained properly. Lactate's simply the human
- 6:08energy currency and the ability to produce a certain range of
- 6:12lactate. Your physiological range is
- 6:14necessary not only for optimizing performance, but also
- 6:18maintaining homeostasis, improving metabolism, and
- 6:22keeping your hormones balanced. So let me review the basics.
- 6:26Lactate isn't a villain, it's often made out to be.
- 6:29Lactate is a human energy currency currency.
- 6:32And lactate doesn't cause fatigue.
- 6:34It's actually a fuel source that's recycled.
- 6:38And if you train it properly, you are going to achieve maximum
- 6:43performance benefits if you understand how to train lactate
- 6:47across the entire spectrum and all the aspects of lactate dye
- 6:50damage dynamics which include lactate clearance, lactate
- 6:54tolerance, lactate shuttling and lactate production.
- 6:57Again, the body needs contribution in pretty much
- 7:02every sport and every event across the entire spectrum,
- 7:06which again ranges from 0.7 millimoles to 37.
- 7:10I mean to sorry, 0.7 millimoles to 32 millimoles per liter in
- 7:15order to, to maximize training and performance.
- 7:20More detailed on details, sorry, more details on the
- 7:25physiological profile tests can be found in chapter 4 of my book
- 7:29and also on my website and my Instagram page as I actually
- 7:32explain and demonstrate how to perform a simple physiological
- 7:36profile test on the track for most track athletes.
- 7:41Depending on how fast you are, you're going to either do 400
- 7:44meter repeats or 800 meter repeats right on the track.
- 7:48And you're going to do a minimum of force 4 stages and a maximum
- 7:52of eight stages. And in between each stage,
- 7:54you're going to take your heart rate, your lactate, and the
- 7:58actual time you ran. And this is going to create a
- 8:03lactate profile. You'll start the test pretty
- 8:05easy and you'll continue to get faster until you can't go any
- 8:08faster. Your lactate profile is simply
- 8:11going to show what energy you have available and at what level
- 8:14it's operating. I break the lactate spectrum
- 8:17into 8 systems from low end energy to Max high end energy
- 8:21and these eight systems will all contribute to total work output.
- 8:26If any part is missing or operating too too low of a
- 8:30level, training can be adjusted to specifically target different
- 8:35lactate systems. The the lactate profile, the
- 8:38physiological profile test will identify specifically which
- 8:42parts of the body which parts of the Physiology need focus for
- 8:46training. It's just like taking your car
- 8:48to the shop and looking under the hood and see which parts are
- 8:52broken in order to fix the fix the car.
- 8:55Same thing. The human body is like a
- 8:57machine. And if we have, we have 8
- 9:01possible parts that are going to contribute to our work output in
- 9:06any event. And if we're only training a
- 9:09couple of those parts, our total work output is not going to be
- 9:13as efficient as if we're maximizing all the parts that
- 9:17are needed to contribute to performance.
- 9:22I need to mention this because for 99% of the population,
- 9:26including sports scientists and coaches, the extent of their
- 9:29lactate knowledge is to improve quote UN quote lactate threshold
- 9:33or what textbooks generally say is 4 millimoles.
- 9:39The other kind of understanding of lactate is to target LT1 and
- 9:42LT2. Again, all of the emphasis in
- 9:46the general population is, is pretty much training lactate
- 9:50between 1:00 and 4:00 millimoles and anything they consider
- 9:55anything above 4 millimoles to be quote UN quote anaerobic or
- 9:59hard. Well, these are simply just not
- 10:01true. These antiquated concepts
- 10:04actually take no consideration of the entire lactate spectrum
- 10:08or its contribution to performance in all events and
- 10:12all sports. Quite frankly, most of the use
- 10:16of the application of lactate data to improve lactate
- 10:19threshold. Again, one, there's not a single
- 10:22lactate threshold. Each lactate system has a
- 10:26threshold or what I like to actually more aptly term,
- 10:29capacity to do work. Two, spot checking during random
- 10:34workouts does not correlate to lactate values on a continuous
- 10:37test or like a profile test. When you're when you're spot
- 10:41checking, it's pretty much an indication that you're failing
- 10:46to take into consideration all aspects of lactate dynamics.
- 10:49When you take a random finger finger stick of lactate, you
- 10:53need to understand that in order to use that data point, you're
- 10:58going to have to conduct that same exact workout over 100
- 11:03times and collect the data at the same exact time in order to
- 11:07start to make sense of that data point.
- 11:10So, for example, A4, if you're, if you're doing a workout and
- 11:14you're, for instance, doing, let's say 6 by 5 minutes with a
- 11:20minute rest and you randomly collect your lactate and it says
- 11:244. But then you come back a couple
- 11:26days later or even later that afternoon and you're doing,
- 11:29let's say 16 by 400 with a minute rest and you collect your
- 11:34lactate and it says four. Well, unfortunately, those two
- 11:40samples of four minimals are not the same thing.
- 11:43And I'll get into that further in, in a different discussion as
- 11:47we, as we get deeper into lactate dynamics.
- 11:49But understanding that the, the, the, the number that comes out
- 11:55is has to do with the work interval, the rest interval and
- 12:00the total amount of work you've done and understanding which
- 12:03parts of lactate dynamics are coming into play.
- 12:06When you get that reading, which is actually a net, a net
- 12:09reading. It's not, it's not lactate
- 12:11production. It takes all the factors of
- 12:13lactate dynamics and comes out with a net number.
- 12:20And my third main point about training lactate is that doing
- 12:25too much work in any system, including threshold, will be
- 12:29detrimental to Physiology and performances.
- 12:32So one of the biggest things in coaching and training is to know
- 12:37how much of what types of workouts are going to yield the
- 12:40best responses. So sometimes that means doing
- 12:43easy running, sometimes that means doing longer, slower
- 12:47intervals, sometimes that means doing shorter, faster intervals,
- 12:52and sometimes it means doing all out speed work.
- 12:57And there's no right or wrong answer.
- 13:00The answer is yes. All of those types of trainings,
- 13:02all of those types of workouts are are in fact beneficial to
- 13:06some athlete at some point. But knowing when the stimulus or
- 13:11the workout is going to create a positive physiological change or
- 13:16positive adaptation is the key. So there's no right or wrong
- 13:20workout. It's just a matter of using
- 13:23physiological data, lactate data, in order to understand and
- 13:28make better choices as to which types of workouts are going to
- 13:31create a positive adaptation in that athlete, which will
- 13:35ultimately yield better performances for high school,
- 13:40college and pro track athletes. We actually aim to perform a
- 13:44profile test every 10 to 12 weeks pretty much before each
- 13:48season. So we'll perform a profile test
- 13:50before cross country season, right before indoor track, right
- 13:54before outdoor track. And then at, at the end of the
- 13:57track season, athletes usually take a two week break.
- 14:01They run for a week easy. And then they'll, they'll take a
- 14:03lactate test in order to set up their summer training.
- 14:06But each time they take a profile test, their training
- 14:09targets are updated. Their, their system, their
- 14:12lactate system training is, is updated.
- 14:16And pretty much it takes the guesswork out of planning the
- 14:21daily training load, whether it's the workout type, intensity
- 14:23type, and it individualizes the the training for each athlete.
- 14:30Even though you might have a A-Team, a cross country team
- 14:33working on the same system or the same workouts, but each
- 14:37athlete is going to have their individual pace targets down to
- 14:40the second in order to ensure that they're targeting that
- 14:45lactate, lactate system for them.
- 14:49Another great feature of using physiological profile data to to
- 14:55steer your training is that it's truly a dynamic periodization
- 14:59model, which is which is going to be the key to maximize
- 15:04performance in any event. For example, you could have, we
- 15:09have the high school cross country season is just kicking
- 15:11up and many high school and college teams are doing their
- 15:14beginning of the season profile testing.
- 15:16Each athlete is racing the same event, but depending on their
- 15:19profile, testing results, their path or or which systems they're
- 15:24going to target from the beginning of the season to the
- 15:27end of the season may be different from their teammates,
- 15:30but that's OK. They're all raising the 5K, but
- 15:33some may need to focus on different systems or different
- 15:37types of workouts in order to get to peak performance even in
- 15:40the same event. The important information each
- 15:45athlete and coach receives from a physiological profile test
- 15:48analysis includes individual heart rate zones, individualized
- 15:52training paces, and an individualized system and facing
- 15:55plan. Some useful tips for high school
- 15:59coaches. At a minimum, it's really good
- 16:02to use lactate profile testing to get individualized heart rate
- 16:06zones and target training paces. Use those zones and paces at a
- 16:11minimum to ensure that your athletes are recovering properly
- 16:15and developing at their own rate.
- 16:17More often than not, I see many high school kids because they're
- 16:21young, they can recover faster. They're not running a ton of
- 16:24miles. They often you have, you know,
- 16:28your middle of the pack kids who are always trying to keep up
- 16:31with the front of the pack kids who may not be quite as
- 16:34developed or genetically as talented are.
- 16:39They can keep up in the workouts, but it doesn't mean
- 16:42they should. So often when we test these kids
- 16:44who are pushing themselves to keep up with the, with the front
- 16:48of the pack, they can do it. But you'll often see that their,
- 16:51their Physiology is not as developed and they're missing a
- 16:55lot of parts because they're, they're constantly overworking
- 16:59on a day-to-day basis. So they're missing developing.
- 17:03And so they're always perplexed when they say, well, I can keep
- 17:06up with so and so on our runs and I can keep up with so and so
- 17:09in the workouts. But when it comes to race day,
- 17:12you know they're beating me by a minute or more.
- 17:15And that's simply because the the athlete that's that's in the
- 17:20front of the pack is using a lower end energy system to
- 17:24perform those workouts than the athlete who's always overworking
- 17:28to try to keep up. So the, the physiological
- 17:34profile tests can make sure one, we're not missing the mark,
- 17:39especially for youth development, especially in that,
- 17:42in that high school setting where we've got, we've got a
- 17:45wide range of talent. And it's there's a lot of
- 17:48guesswork and in order, especially for those kids trying
- 17:53to keep up with those, those kids who are maybe more
- 17:56developed or more talented, we want them to develop at their
- 17:59own rate so they can get to the next level.
- 18:04In summary, embracing lactate basics empowers athletes of all
- 18:09levels to train smarter, not harder.
- 18:12It's the foundation of my system based training approach, which
- 18:16has helped Olympians and world champs in numerous sports, but
