Prime Minister Anthony Albanese uses his holiday address to stress unity and social cohesion, tying it to a fresh crackdown on domestic extremism and hate speech... He highlights new security and online-moderation measures, arguing they protect multicultural communities without silencing debate... Opposition Leader Peter Dutton focuses on cost-of-living pain, saying families feel “left behind” by Canberra and need immediate relief on power, fuel and groceries... For voters, these warm holiday messages are also a reminder... the political contest in 2026 is already underway. — — [serious] In Sydney... the Bondi community is formally honoured months after that horrific stabbing rampage at Westfield Bondi Junction... The Prime Minister announces bravery awards for security guards, police, and everyday shoppers who stepped in to shield strangers during the attack... Families of victims say the recognition can’t undo their loss, but it helps ensure their loved ones’ stories are remembered for courage, not just tragedy... For many Australians, the ceremony adds emotional weight to ongoing debates about public safety, mental health support, and how quickly authorities respond in crowded spaces. — — [serious] To Melbourne... where concerns over youth crime and public safety surge after a Norwegian tourist is viciously assaulted at St Kilda Pier... Police say a group of youths falsely accuse the visitor of filming them, then attack... leaving him badly injured... The incident follows a string of violent episodes across the city, including a machete attack in Pakenham where Good Samaritans step in to help the victim... Victoria Police promise a stronger presence in key hotspots, while community leaders warn tougher policing alone won’t fix deeper issues of disadvantage, online-fuelled bravado, and gang-style group behaviour. — — [serious] Staying in Victoria... there’s fresh alarm over threats to political leaders... A man faces court accused of making kidnap threats against the Prime Minister... Security agencies insist there’s no broader plot, but acknowledge a rise in online abuse and targeted intimidation of politicians, journalists and public servants... Experts say the mix of conspiracy theories, polarised politics and easy access to officials on social media is creating a more dangerous environment... For Australians, it raises a difficult question... how to keep leaders accessible and accountable... without putting them in harm’s way. — — [curious] Now to our region... where storm seasons and extreme weather continue to expose fragile infrastructure... Across parts of eastern Australia and the Pacific, intense thunderstorms and heavy rain cause power outages, flight disruptions and flash flooding... Energy providers defend their preparations but admit ageing poles and wires, plus rapid growth on city fringes, make the grid vulnerable... Climate scientists say this is the new normal... more frequent, sharper bursts of wild weather... For households and small businesses, it means higher insurance costs, more days lost to outages, and renewed pressure on governments to harden essential services. — — [urgent] Overseas in Europe... security services are on high alert after authorities in the UK say they foil a major terror plot... Counter‑terror police arrest several suspects and seize materials allegedly linked to plans for an attack on busy public locations during the festive period... While details remain limited, officials say there is no immediate threat to Australians abroad but urge travellers to stay aware in crowded places and follow local advice... The case underscores how extremist networks adapt quickly... and why intelligence sharing between Australia, Britain and other partners remains central to preventing attacks before they happen. — — [warm] That’s NewsCard Daily.
