- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the rain descended, and the floods came,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and
- 0:09Speaker 1: it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Matthew 7.25 Father, there are many types of disasters. There
- 0:20Speaker 1: are natural disasters like hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes, but there
- 0:25Speaker 1: are also the storms of affliction and persecution that beats
- 0:29Speaker 1: down the soul. When I am most comfortable, suddenly, out
- 0:33Speaker 1: of nowhere, calamity strikes. In a moment, health, friends, comforts
- 0:40Speaker 1: may be gone. That is the time when I need
- 0:43Speaker 1: an anchor in the storm, a rock of security, something
- 0:49Speaker 1: that can't be taken away. The promises, confidence, and hope
- 0:54Speaker 1: of heaven are only found in Jesus Christ. All earthly
- 1:00Speaker 1: calamities cannot touch these eternal comforts. When my faith is
- 1:05Speaker 1: founded on the rock of my salvation, which is Jesus Christ,
- 1:09Speaker 1: all disastrous events shall not defeat my faith. The gates
- 1:15Speaker 1: of hell shall not prevail against me, and I shall
- 1:18Speaker 1: not be beaten down and carried away in despair. I
- 1:22Speaker 1: will call upon the name of my God, and He
- 1:26Speaker 1: will lift me up. I may be shaken, but I
- 1:30Speaker 1: will not be removed from the steadfastness of my faith.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Life is not fair and never will be. Christ is
- 1:39Speaker 1: the one who mediates justice in all things and makes
- 1:43Speaker 1: right what we have suffered. Thank you, Jesus, for knowing
- 1:47Speaker 1: my heart and turning what the enemy means for evil
- 1:51Speaker 1: to my good and your glory. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with us today. Continue your time
- 2:02Speaker 1: with God by listening to today's Bible story. Brought to
- 2:06Speaker 1: you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Noah and the Ark Before this story, we were told
- 2:20Speaker 2: the story of humanity's first bloodshed, Cain and Abel. Cain's
- 2:26Speaker 2: hatred for God and jealousy of his brother led to
- 2:29Speaker 2: the brutal murder of Abel. But evil did not stop
- 2:33Speaker 2: with Cain. Evil continued its reign over the hearts of man. God,
- 2:39Speaker 2: for the good of humanity, now has a plan for
- 2:42Speaker 2: purification and redemption. Inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:52Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. As we begin today's story,
- 2:56Speaker 3: we find that since Cain was cursed to wander the earth,
- 2:59Speaker 3: humankind has multiplied, spreading out across the earth as God
- 3:03Speaker 3: had intended. But something else is also growing— evil. It is
- 3:09Speaker 3: a theme that's repeated throughout the Old Testament. Evil is
- 3:13Speaker 3: reigning in the hearts of man, and that is not
- 3:16Speaker 3: at all what God wants. Each new generation is growing
- 3:19Speaker 3: more and more evil. Sin is spreading like wildfire until
- 3:23Speaker 3: finally God has had enough. He cannot ignore the depravity
- 3:27Speaker 3: any longer. God is grieved at what has become of humanity.
- 3:32Speaker 3: He is ready to wipe mankind off the face of
- 3:35Speaker 3: the earth. With a great flood, he's going to wash
- 3:37Speaker 3: the earth clean of evil humanity. But there is one
- 3:41Speaker 3: man who is different. Noah, we're told, was righteous in
- 3:45Speaker 3: God's eyes. It must have been extremely challenging for Noah
- 3:49Speaker 3: to live a righteous life in the midst of such
- 3:52Speaker 3: rampant evil. Like Noah, you may often feel surrounded by
- 3:56Speaker 3: evil in our world today, and like Noah, you must
- 3:59Speaker 3: stand apart from those living to satisfy their own desires.
- 4:04Speaker 3: As you listen today, think about how Noah and his
- 4:06Speaker 3: family must have felt building this giant ark. They'd never
- 4:10Speaker 3: before even seen rain or experienced a flood. Think about
- 4:14Speaker 3: the immense amount of faith that's required. Imagine the fear
- 4:18Speaker 3: in their hearts as they enter the ark and watch
- 4:20Speaker 3: God close the door. But then watch as God carries
- 4:24Speaker 3: them through the flood, protecting them from all harm and
- 4:27Speaker 3: providing for them every step of the way. Let's listen
- 4:31Speaker 3: now to the story about a man, an ark, a
- 4:34Speaker 3: great flood, and God's plan of redemption for a world
- 4:38Speaker 3: filled with evil.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Mankind multiplied. With more people filling the earth, more opportunities
- 4:50Speaker 2: for evil abounded. Sons and daughters of Cain established corrupt kingdoms.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Men treated women as property, and the twisted hearts of
- 5:00Speaker 2: people cast the world into darkness. Even the lives of
- 5:04Speaker 2: people began to shorten, and humans were dying earlier and earlier.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Mighty men of old would steal away women, rape them.
- 5:15Speaker 2: These things God would not ignore. The actions of people
- 5:19Speaker 2: at this time reflected a broken and corrupt heart. God
- 5:24Speaker 2: saw this wickedness and regretted greatly the state of humanity.
- 5:29Speaker 2: In sorrow he said, I will blot out man whom
- 5:33Speaker 2: I have created from the face of the land. Yet
- 5:37Speaker 2: out of this twisted generation there was one man named Noah,
- 5:42Speaker 2: who was righteous in God's eyes. God said to Noah,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I have determined to make an end of all flesh,
- 5:51Speaker 2: for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I will destroy them with the earth. The wrath of
- 5:59Speaker 2: God would descend in the form of rain, and water
- 6:03Speaker 2: from beneath the earth would come after. This was God's punishment.
- 6:08Speaker 2: The flood was coming. God instructed Noah and his sons
- 6:13Speaker 2: to build an ark, a mighty vessel that would preserve him,
- 6:18Speaker 2: his wife, his sons, and their wives from the coming storm.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, built
- 6:28Speaker 2: the ark exactly as God had instructed. He also instructed
- 6:33Speaker 2: Noah that he should bring every animal with them in
- 6:36Speaker 2: pairs and keep them alive in the ark. Even now
- 6:40Speaker 2: God was making promises to redeem the world. Noah fearfully
- 6:45Speaker 2: and obediently followed every instruction that God gave him. When
- 6:50Speaker 2: the time had come for the flood to begin, God
- 6:53Speaker 2: told Noah, Go into the ark and take your family
- 6:56Speaker 2: with you. The rain will fall for forty days and
- 7:00Speaker 2: forty nights. It will destroy the land and all those who.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Live on it.
- 7:05Speaker 2: But your family... and all the animals that come to
- 7:09Speaker 2: you will be saved. When Noah's family and all the
- 7:14Speaker 2: animals were secured in the ark, God shut the door.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Seven days later, the rain began to fall, and the
- 7:22Speaker 2: cleansing power of God opened. Water fell from the skies,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and the springs of the earth burst open violently. The
- 7:31Speaker 2: water rose, covering the mountains. and washing away all the
- 7:36Speaker 2: corrupt and evil kingdoms built by the wickedness of mankind.
- 7:42Speaker 2: God once breathed life into mankind, and now he took
- 7:46Speaker 2: their breath away. All was destroyed, all but those on
- 7:52Speaker 2: the ark. After forty days had passed, the raining ceased,
- 7:57Speaker 2: and the earth was still underwater for a hundred and
- 8:00Speaker 2: fifty days. At the end of the hundred and fifty days,
- 8:04Speaker 2: The water had receded enough for the ark to land
- 8:07Speaker 2: on the side of a mountain. After four months had passed,
- 8:11Speaker 2: Noah opened a window and sent out a raven to
- 8:14Speaker 2: find dry land, but the raven never returned. Noah then
- 8:19Speaker 2: sent out a dove to seek out dry land, and
- 8:22Speaker 2: it returned because there was no dry land for it
- 8:25Speaker 2: to perch on. Seven days later he sent the dove
- 8:29Speaker 2: out again, and it came back with an olive leaf.
- 8:33Speaker 2: meaning that the dove had found dry land and came back.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Noah waited another seven days and sent the dove out again,
- 8:41Speaker 2: hopeful that it would not return, meaning the land was
- 8:44Speaker 2: ready to live on. This time it didn't return, so
- 8:49Speaker 2: Noah knew that the water was not covering the earth anymore.
- 8:53Speaker 2: After a month had passed, Noah opened the door and
- 8:56Speaker 2: saw that the land was dry. God beckoned Noah to
- 9:01Speaker 2: come out of the ark, So Noah brought his family
- 9:04Speaker 2: and the animals out of the ark and offered a
- 9:07Speaker 2: sacrifice to the Lord, just as Abel did before them.
- 9:11Speaker 2: God was pleased to receive their offering and vowed to
- 9:15Speaker 2: never flood the earth again. So God gave Noah permission
- 9:20Speaker 2: to eat animals and plants so they might multiply the
- 9:23Speaker 2: earth again. With the newness of life, God put a
- 9:27Speaker 2: rainbow in the sky as a symbol of His promises.
- 9:31Speaker 2: The story of evil does not end here, but the
- 9:34Speaker 2: story of God and his passion to preserve and protect
- 9:38Speaker 2: those he loves is still unfolding. Evil abounds, but the
- 9:43Speaker 2: promises of God prevail still.
- 9:48Speaker 3: As the story of Noah begins, we get a picture
- 9:50Speaker 3: of just how bad things can and do get when
- 9:53Speaker 3: mankind follows only their own heart. Just four chapters removed
- 9:59Speaker 3: from when everything was perfect in the Garden of Eden,
- 10:01Speaker 3: the world is in disarray, death, violence, abuse. God simply cannot,
- 10:08Speaker 3: will not allow evil to go unchecked. He will not
- 10:12Speaker 3: stand idly by and watch the world he created be
- 10:16Speaker 3: destroyed by sinful men. There had to be a reckoning.
- 10:20Speaker 3: a judgment, and we see here in today's story what
- 10:23Speaker 3: God's righteous, holy anger can do. The truth is, we're
- 10:28Speaker 3: all deserving of such a flood of judgment for the
- 10:31Speaker 3: evil and sin in our own hearts. But God is
- 10:34Speaker 3: full of mercy and compassion. And here in the story
- 10:38Speaker 3: of Noah, we see that he is making a way
- 10:41Speaker 3: for his ultimate plan of redemption to be carried out.
- 10:45Speaker 3: We are not told much about Noah other than the
- 10:48Speaker 3: most important thing. that he was walking in a right
- 10:51Speaker 3: relationship with God. He was not perfect. He was also
- 10:55Speaker 3: touched by the sin nature passed down from Adam, but
- 10:58Speaker 3: he was righteous in the sight of God, righteous in
- 11:02Speaker 3: God's eyes. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament
- 11:06Speaker 3: tells us that it was Noah's faith in God that
- 11:08Speaker 3: made him righteous. He took God at his word even
- 11:12Speaker 3: when he had never seen what God told him was coming.
- 11:15Speaker 3: Look at how God delivers the news to Noah. First
- 11:18Speaker 3: the bad, then the good. Genesis 6 verses 17 through 19.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Now behold, I myself am bringing the flood of water
- 11:28Speaker 3: upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which there
- 11:31Speaker 3: is the breath of life from under heaven. Everything that
- 11:33Speaker 3: is on the earth shall perish, but I will establish
- 11:37Speaker 3: my covenant with you and you shall enter the ark, you,
- 11:41Speaker 3: your sons, your wife, and your son's wives with you.
- 11:46Speaker 3: And of every living thing of all flesh, You shall
- 11:49Speaker 3: bring two of every kind into the ark to keep
- 11:52Speaker 3: them alive with you. God made a covenant, a promise
- 11:57Speaker 3: with Noah. He and his family would be safe along
- 12:00Speaker 3: with the animals that were on the ark. And through
- 12:03Speaker 3: Noah's family, God was going to save a remnant of
- 12:06Speaker 3: humanity to start afresh and even the animal world as well.
- 12:11Speaker 3: But first came the flood. For 40 days it rained.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Waters rose and destroyed every person not on the ark,
- 12:19Speaker 3: just as God had said. But it wasn't over. Noah
- 12:23Speaker 3: and his family stayed on the ark for a full year.
- 12:27Speaker 3: God provided rescue for Noah and his family during the
- 12:30Speaker 3: flood and provision far after the flood. Isn't that the
- 12:34Speaker 3: way we see it in our lives as well? God
- 12:37Speaker 3: is with us during the storm and through the storm.
- 12:40Speaker 3: He stays with us, providing for our every need through
- 12:43Speaker 3: the aftermath of the storm. When it was finally safe
- 12:47Speaker 3: to step outside, what did Noah do? He offered a
- 12:50Speaker 3: sacrifice to God, worshiping him, thanking him for his protection,
- 12:55Speaker 3: his presence, his provision, and his mercy and grace. And
- 13:00Speaker 3: God gave Noah a beautiful sign of his covenant, a
- 13:04Speaker 3: rainbow in the sky. The story of Noah is a
- 13:07Speaker 3: powerful reminder that God, even in his anger, loves his children,
- 13:12Speaker 3: and offers salvation and new life to those who put
- 13:15Speaker 3: their faith and trust in him. This was a fresh start,
- 13:19Speaker 3: but sadly not the end of sin and evil. That
- 13:23Speaker 3: would take a much bigger act, a sacrifice only God
- 13:26Speaker 3: himself can offer. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this
- 13:31Speaker 3: story that shows the consuming power of your righteousness and
- 13:34Speaker 3: justice for sin. Thank you also for what it shows
- 13:38Speaker 3: us about your loving heart to save those who trust
- 13:41Speaker 3: in you. Help us as Noah did to have faith
- 13:45Speaker 3: in you through Jesus Christ and follow you wherever you lead. Amen.
