- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his Word, and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James chapter 1 and we are in verses 22 through
- 0:2125. James, 122 through 25.
- 0:24And in this portion of Scripture, the pastor of the
- 0:28church at Jerusalem, he's writing to people that were once
- 0:31a part of his congregation. Now they're scattered all across
- 0:33the Roman Empire. And he has a very important
- 0:37truth that he wants them to recognize and to know in their
- 0:41lives. And it's something that we
- 0:43desperately need to. I think I'm probably going to
- 0:47call this episode like, don't be a don't be a flabby Christian.
- 0:54Don't be flabby Christian. Now today's talk is not on, you
- 0:59know, weight loss, weight gain. I I know in my life that's
- 1:03something that I consistently have to work towards and I'm
- 1:07sure some of you have that as well.
- 1:09I've got some friends that their metabolism just goes and goes
- 1:12and goes and so they're actually always trying to, you know, put
- 1:15on a little bit of weight. That is not the particular
- 1:18affliction that God has given to me.
- 1:20But way, I won't say, well, yeah, I guess it is way more
- 1:25important than even our physical health is our spiritual health.
- 1:30And I've heard it said many times that often, especially
- 1:34here in America, we as Christians can have a problem of
- 1:40eating and eating and consuming more and more spiritual things.
- 1:45We hear sermons, we hear podcasts.
- 1:48We have the, you know, physical word of God that's with us and
- 1:53we can, you know, go to conferences and, and we can just
- 1:57ingest so much spiritual truth. And yet we never exercise
- 2:03spiritually. We never do anything with the
- 2:07knowledge that we have. So we hear about forgiveness.
- 2:10We hear about sharing our faith. We hear about, you know,
- 2:16sacrificing and surrendering for Jesus, and yet we just live our
- 2:20lives exactly like all of the people around us.
- 2:26If you were to look at, you know, perhaps our our checkbook
- 2:29or our pocketbook or our credit card statements, they would look
- 2:33the exact same as our neighbors. You could look at our, you know,
- 2:37calendar and apart from, you know, one hour or two hours a
- 2:41week, it would look exactly the same as everyone else's.
- 2:46But God calls us to not just listen, not just learn, but to
- 2:51put into practice the spiritual truths that we are given.
- 2:56And so that's what we're going to be talking about today.
- 2:58I'm going to read through the verses and we're going to spot a
- 3:00couple of things that James wants us to look at in regards
- 3:04to Don't be a spiritually flabby Christian, he says, but be doers
- 3:11of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
- 3:16Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is
- 3:21like someone looking at his own face in a mirror, for he looks
- 3:25at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of
- 3:29person he was. But the one who looks intently
- 3:33into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it and is not
- 3:37a forgetful hearer, but a doer who works this person will be
- 3:42blessed in what he does. All right, so we're going to
- 3:47look at these. It's just 4 verses.
- 3:49And so I know this is a passage that consistently in my life,
- 3:55especially as a pastor, man, I've got to come back to again
- 4:00and again and again. Because if all I do is if you
- 4:06will read and teach the Bible, that's not enough.
- 4:11That's not enough for a pastor. A pastor actually has to live
- 4:15out what he is preaching and reading from the word of God.
- 4:21And that's true for every Christian.
- 4:23But as a pastor, if I'm saying to other people like, hey,
- 4:28forgive, confess your sins, share your faith, and in my
- 4:32life, I'm not doing those things, man.
- 4:35I'm not going to help anyone out, at least of all myself.
- 4:38This would be, you know, what Paul would say in his life.
- 4:42I he would say in First Corinthians, it's either 8 or 9
- 4:46the very end of it, he says, but I discipline my body and keep it
- 4:50under subjection so that when I've preached to others, I
- 4:54myself would not be a castaway. And so that's that's my prayer
- 4:58and I hope that even as we dive into these verses, this is your
- 5:02prayer as well. Not just that we would know
- 5:05things about the Bible or know things about Jesus, but that we
- 5:08would actually experience it and live it out.
- 5:11OK verse 22 be doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving
- 5:18yourselves a doer. This is just a person that they
- 5:23actually accomplish. They produce something, they
- 5:26make something. They act on what is prescribed
- 5:30that, if you will, if the doctor said, OK, you've got this, you
- 5:34know, infection, you've got this parasite, you've got this thing,
- 5:38and you really need to, you really need to take this every
- 5:43single day or you will die. Well, the foolish thing to do
- 5:47would be to say, well, I have read this prescription from the
- 5:51doctor over and over and over again.
- 5:54I know it by heart. I can recite it all to you.
- 5:58Yeah, I know exactly what the prescription says.
- 6:00You would say that is not enough.
- 6:02You actually have to take the prescription.
- 6:05You have to eat that, otherwise, you know, that parasite is going
- 6:07to eat you. Here James tells us don't just
- 6:11be hearers of the word, be doers of the Word.
- 6:16And he even says when you only hear the word of God and you
- 6:20don't do what it says, he says you are deceiving yourselves,
- 6:26you are deluding, you are tricking yourself.
- 6:30This would be another way that you would use this phrase would
- 6:34be this is to reckon fraudulently.
- 6:37It is to defraud. You are, if you will.
- 6:40We would all hate it in business if we thought, you know, we had
- 6:47fair dealings with whatever this other person was selling us and
- 6:52actually they were only selling us half of the amount of
- 6:55whatever item we were buying. We'd be like, man, I, I've been
- 6:59defrauded. You know, this person committed
- 7:02a, a business crime. I was owed this and I didn't get
- 7:05all of it. Here James says that we are
- 7:09deceiving ourselves, We are defrauding ourselves when we
- 7:14don't do what God's Word says and we just read it.
- 7:18Verse 23 says because if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not
- 7:23a doer, he is like someone looking at his own face in a
- 7:27mirror, for he looks at himself, goes away and immediately
- 7:32forgets what kind of person he was here James says this.
- 7:37When you look in the mirror, you're looking for a specific
- 7:41reason. You know, mirrors are invented
- 7:44so that you can see, OK, I've got a hair out of place.
- 7:48You know, I've got, you know, some gunk in my teeth.
- 7:51I've got, you know, a giant pimple or something on my face.
- 7:56And I need to adjust this. It might be, oh, I need to, you
- 8:00know, for me comb my beard or whatever it is.
- 8:04You're looking for a reason. And if you look at the mirror,
- 8:08you notice the problem with your face or with your hair or with
- 8:12your teeth, and then you leave and you don't do anything as a
- 8:17result of having looked in the mirror.
- 8:19It's pointless. It doesn't benefit you at all.
- 8:22And here he says, dear, dear Christians, realize that you
- 8:29have the word of God and it is of incredible value and worth to
- 8:35you. How amazing to hold in our hands
- 8:39of the word of God, even as he's writing this to them, that they
- 8:42would receive the word of God in, you know, letter or scroll
- 8:46form. What an incredible gift that is.
- 8:50But if you do nothing as a result of hearing from God
- 8:54Himself, it benefits you not one iota.
- 9:00There is no there's no supernatural power in you just
- 9:06opening up to a page of Scripture, reading through it,
- 9:10and not making any adjustments to your life as a result.
- 9:14Now, sometimes that adjustment might be in your mind.
- 9:16It might be that you think a different way about God or you
- 9:19think a different way about salvation.
- 9:21That would be a very meaningful change, a doing of the word as a
- 9:27result of reading. But so many of us are used to
- 9:34just reading the Bible and anticipating a change in
- 9:38emotion. We think I will be happier as a
- 9:42result of reading the Bible. I will experience peace, I will
- 9:44experience joy as a result of reading Scripture when that is
- 9:51not at its core what God is looking to accomplish through
- 9:56Scripture. Now, does He want to give you
- 9:57joy and peace and patience and and kindness?
- 10:01Does He want to give you all of those things?
- 10:03Absolutely. But He is also looking to
- 10:06transform you into the image of Christ.
- 10:10That from the very beginning of humanity's creation, we were
- 10:14created to be the image of God. That we would be a picture of
- 10:18what God is like in His words and His actions, His creativity,
- 10:22His intellect, His love. We are called to show other
- 10:26people and all of creation what God is like through how we talk
- 10:31and think and act. And if we simply go to God's
- 10:35word to say I want to feel something different as a result
- 10:39of my reading, we are missing out.
- 10:43God wants to transform all of you right now.
- 10:46You think things that are untrue, that are ungodly, that
- 10:51are unkind, that are not right. And God wants to change that
- 10:55through how you live in the Word that you come to this book that
- 11:01is a mirror that shows you who you really are and that you
- 11:05would change your thoughts as a result of in encountering the
- 11:09word of God right now. You say things and some of the
- 11:13things are vulgar. Some of the things are assuming
- 11:18the worst of other people and you deride and you degrade them.
- 11:24Some of your words are some of your words are just not at all
- 11:31tempered with grace. They're they're idle words,
- 11:35they're vain words, they're useless words.
- 11:37And God wants to change it so that your speech begins to be a
- 11:42fountain of life for other people.
- 11:46That is, they hear you speak to them or about others or about
- 11:50topics. They go man.
- 11:53It's like interacting with the Bible that we would be so
- 11:57infused with the words of God that they would make their way
- 12:01into our heart and our mind that we would start just talking
- 12:05about them. That we would be able to, if you
- 12:08will, have proverbs on the mind so that when we're giving advice
- 12:12to people, it's not just your thoughts, it's the thoughts of
- 12:16God. It's when people are asking us
- 12:20or when people are gossiping to us that we would be able to say,
- 12:24well, have you talked with them about this yet?
- 12:28No, not really. Well, here I have their phone
- 12:31number. Let's call them up.
- 12:33Let's talk to them right now or oh, hey, they're just right over
- 12:36there. And another part of, you know,
- 12:38this party or this building or whatever, let's go talk to them
- 12:42and get this settled. That we would be peacemakers.
- 12:44That we would be those that speak life into people when
- 12:48people need encouragement. It's not just something shallow,
- 12:53but that we would be able to speak the eternal words of God
- 12:58in and over people and in our actions.
- 13:01That we would transform from being apathetic or lazy or cruel
- 13:08in our actions. That we would turn into the
- 13:12hands and feet of Jesus. That we would be generous with
- 13:15our finances towards others and towards the work of God.
- 13:18That we would be caring and enabling people to be able to do
- 13:25what they need to do. We would do kind actions for
- 13:28others. We would man.
- 13:32There's just a billion different ways in which we can begin to
- 13:36live out the Word of God. But that requires 2 things.
- 13:40Number one, we have to know what God's Word says so that we can
- 13:43do it, which means we have to spend time in the Word.
- 13:46And then once we've spent time in the Word, then we need to put
- 13:49it into practice. And this is what we read in
- 13:52verse #25 where we end today, he says.
- 13:54But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom
- 14:00and perseveres in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer
- 14:05who works, this person will be blessed in what he does instead
- 14:12of being the person that looks in the mirror, sees all the
- 14:14imperfection and goes away and doesn't change anything as a
- 14:18result. The person that intently looks
- 14:21into, as James here describes it, the perfect law of freedom,
- 14:27that God's commands towards us are not to burden us down to be
- 14:32a killjoy. No, no, He wants us to live life
- 14:36to the fullest. That we find our greatest
- 14:39expression not in disobeying God, but in obeying and
- 14:44following and mimicking God. Do you think that God is limited
- 14:47in any way, or do you think that he is missing out on any part of
- 14:51life? No, he is living life the way it
- 14:54was intended to be lived. When we lie, when we are are
- 14:58unkind, when we envy and covet, when we commit adultery, when we
- 15:02murder, when we hate all of these things that God commands
- 15:06us not to do in Scripture, it poisons and destroys all of our
- 15:11relationships. But when we live the way that
- 15:15God wants us to live, we are living a life of freedom.
- 15:20A life where we are not constantly shooting ourselves in
- 15:23the foot and going, oh man, I, I could have had this great
- 15:26relationship with that person. I, I wouldn't have, you know,
- 15:30betrayed or, or harmed or hurt this person in this way if I
- 15:33just followed what God says. And when we look into God's
- 15:39perfect law of freedom and we recognize the freedom found and
- 15:43following and obeying him, not in following and obeying our
- 15:46passions are the things that our sin nature wants us to do.
- 15:50And when we persevere in the law of freedom, we don't just give
- 15:53up after a time of or two of going, oh, well, I meant to do
- 15:58what God's word told me to do this morning, but I, I really
- 16:01messed up. And so I guess I'm just not
- 16:03going to try anymore. No, no, look intently into the
- 16:06perfect law of freedom. Persevere in that.
- 16:10Don't be a forgetful hero, but a doer who works and it says this
- 16:14person will be blessed in what he does.
- 16:18Do you want to find blessing in your life?
- 16:20Do you want God's favor and happiness and equipping in your
- 16:24life? Read the Word of God and do what
- 16:28it says. Don't abandon it.
- 16:31Don't give up. We are going to have difficulty
- 16:34because we are not perfect yet this side of heaven.
- 16:36But keep on looking into God's word and as you do so you will
- 16:41find the blessing of God. Don't defraud yourself.
- 16:45Don't commit a business crime against yourself that you are
- 16:49not getting all of what God wants for you through giving you
- 16:54His word. Instead realize that because of
- 16:57God's love for you, because of how much stuff is in scripture,
- 17:04you have a limitless source of freedom and joy.
- 17:09And it in the right way self help that God wants to change
- 17:15you and transform you so that you are the best version of
- 17:19yourself, the version that he created you to be, which is more
- 17:23and more and more like Jesus. That you would be conformed to
- 17:26the image of Christ. And that when people look at
- 17:28you, when they hear you talk, even in yourself, when you think
- 17:32in your mind, you are becoming more and more like your Savior.
- 17:37That people interacting with you feel as though they have
- 17:40interacted with a loving wise God.
- 17:45Because it's not coming from you.
- 17:47It's not coming from your wisdom.
- 17:48It's not coming from just how you would interact with
- 17:50situations, but that we would continually be spilling out, as
- 17:55my friend Pastor Ron Smith says, sloshing out the the Holy Spirit
- 17:59and the Word of God, that it would spill over into other
- 18:03people. Well, thanks for tuning in
- 18:05today. I hope today would be an
- 18:06encouragement to you. We're ending chapter 1 tomorrow
- 18:09with verses 26 and 27.
