Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn Malay with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely! I've been craving some hawker food. Can we learn how to order noodles today? Lucas: Great idea. Noodles are a big deal in Malaysia. Let's start with a phrase you'll use a lot: 'Saya mahu mee goreng.' Luna: Saya mahu mee goreng. That means 'I want fried noodles' right? Lucas: Exactly! 'Mee' refers to yellow noodles, and 'goreng' means fried. So you're asking for fried yellow noodles. Luna: Saya mahu mee goreng. I love that. What if I want rice vermicelli instead? Lucas: Then you say 'Saya mahu bihun goreng.' Bihun is the thin rice noodles. Luna: Saya mahu bihun goreng. So bihun is rice vermicelli. Got it. Lucas: Perfect. Now if you want the thick, chewy kind of noodle, that's 'mie'. So 'Saya mahu mie goreng.' Luna: Saya mahu mie goreng. So we have mee, bihun, and mie. Three different noodles. Lucas: You've got it. Sometimes you might ask if they have it: 'Ada mee goreng?' Luna: Ada mee goreng? That's 'Is there fried noodles?' or 'Do you have fried noodles?' Lucas: Right. And if you want a soup version, you can say 'Saya mahu bihun sup.' That's rice vermicelli in soup. Luna: Saya mahu bihun sup. Oh, that sounds comforting. Lucas: Let's practice a mini scene. Imagine we're at a hawker stall. You walk up and say 'Ada mee goreng?' Luna: Ada mee goreng? Lucas: The seller says 'Ada.' Then you say 'Saya mahu mee goreng.' Luna: Saya mahu mee goreng. Lucas: Perfect. If they ask what else, you could add 'Saya mahu bihun sup.' Luna: Saya mahu bihun sup. Lucas, I'm actually hungry now. Lucas: Me too. You know, I've been thinking — if Fexingo has been helping you learn these phrases, and you find it useful, consider supporting the show. It keeps us ad-free. Luna: Yeah, it does take effort to make these episodes. Every little bit helps us keep teaching. Lucas: Exactly. If you'd like to support, you can at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. No pressure, but it's appreciated. Luna: Okay, back to noodles. So I have 'Saya mahu mee goreng' and 'Saya mahu bihun goreng' down. Let's try a conversation. Lucas: Sure. I'll be the seller. You come up and say 'Ada mee goreng?' Luna: Ada mee goreng? Lucas: Ada. Nak berapa? Luna: Saya mahu mee goreng satu. Lucas: Okay, that works. 'Satu' means one. So 'Saya mahu mee goreng satu' — I want one fried noodles. Luna: Saya mahu mee goreng satu. What about 'Saya mahu bihun sup satu'? Lucas: Perfect. You're ready for the hawker. Let's review all five phrases one more time. Luna: Okay. Saya mahu mee goreng. Lucas: Good. Luna: Saya mahu bihun goreng. Lucas: Yes. Luna: Saya mahu mie goreng. Lucas: Right. Luna: Ada mee goreng?
