  here. Last time, we learned how King Saul stopped

  trusting and obeying God. It was a sad story,

  because Saul began so well, but his choices led

  him away from God's plan. But here's the good

  news, even when people fail, God's plan never

  fails. Today's story shows how God began preparing

  a new leader, a young shepherd boy named David.

  He didn't look like a king, but God saw something

  very special in his heart. Let's find out how

  God chose David. One day, God spoke to his prophet

  Samuel. He told Samuel to go to Bethlehem as

  he had chosen one of Jess's sons to be the new

  king. But Samuel felt afraid. King Saul was still

  ruling Israel, and Saul could be very jealous

  and angry. If he found out Samuel was going to
• 1:24
  anoint a new king, he might try to stop him,

  or even hurt him. So God gave Samuel wise instructions.

  He told Samuel to take a young cow with him and

  say that he had come to offer a sacrifice to

  the Lord. He was also to invite Jesse to the

  sacrifice, and God would show him what to do.

  When Samuel arrived in Bethlehem, the town leaders

  came out to meet him. But they looked worried.

  They asked. Do you come in peace? You see, in

  those days, prophets didn't visit towns just

  to chat. When a prophet arrived, it often meant

  God had something serious to say, sometimes a

  warning or correction. The people respected Samuel

  tending the sheep. They sent for him, and he

  came in from the fields where he had been watching

  the sheep. Samuel wondered if this was the one

  God had chosen. Then God told Samuel that this

  was the one he had chosen. Samuel took a horn

  filled with oil and poured it gently on David's
• 3:56
  head. The oil ran down, marking David as God's

  chosen one. From that day on, God's Spirit came

  upon David in a special way. Even though David

  was still just a young shepherd, God had already
• 4:14
  chosen him to be Israel's next king. Isn't that

  amazing? Everyone else saw a shepherd boy, but

  God saw a king. David's story reminds us that

  God doesn't just see what's on the outside. He

  sees our hearts. He knows when we love him, even
