- 0:22Thanks for listening. This morning scripture comes
- 0:27from the book of Acts chapter 5, starting in verse one.
- 0:33Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira,
- 0:37also sold a piece of property with his wife's full knowledge.
- 0:41He kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the
- 0:45rest and put it at the apostles feet.
- 0:48Then Peter said, Ananias, is it that Satan has so filled your
- 0:54heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for
- 0:58yourself some of the money you received for the land?
- 1:01Didn't it belong to you before it was sold?
- 1:05And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal?
- 1:09What made you think of doing such a thing?
- 1:12You have not lied just to a human beings but to God.
- 1:16When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died, and great fear
- 1:20seized all who heard what had happened.
- 1:23Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body and
- 1:27carried him out and buried him after three hours.
- 1:31About 3 hours later his wife came in not knowing what had
- 1:35happened. Peter asked her, Tell me, is
- 1:38this the price you and Ananias got for the land?
- 1:42Yes, she said. That is the price, Peter said to
- 1:46her. How could you conspire to test
- 1:48the spirit of the Lord? Listen, the feet of the men who
- 1:52buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you
- 1:56out also. At that moment she fell down at
- 1:59his feet and died. Then the young men came in, and
- 2:03finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her
- 2:06husband. Great fear seized the whole
- 2:09church and all who heard about these events.
- 2:13This is the word of God for the people of God.
- 2:15Thanks be to God. I wanted to start off this
- 2:19morning with a question, so raise your hand if this is you.
- 2:24Was there anyone here this morning who was afraid that God
- 2:28was going to strike them dead when they placed their gift in
- 2:31the offering plate this morning? Anyone.
- 2:35No one. OK, I didn't think so.
- 2:37I didn't think so. It's pretty wild, isn't it, to
- 2:41think that God would ever strike someone down after they'd just
- 2:46given an offering to the church. But isn't that what we just read
- 2:52about in the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts chapter 5?
- 2:58On the surface, right? If we just go with a a plain
- 3:02reading of the text, that seems to be the case, right?
- 3:06And This is why I always insist that we can't just go with a
- 3:09plain reading of scripture. We need a close reading of
- 3:14scripture, right? To learn what it said to the
- 3:17original audience and what it means for us today.
- 3:20So this morning I want to take a look at that story of Ananias
- 3:24and Sapphira, A close look and their sudden demise.
- 3:30But to really understand what's happening, we have to back up a
- 3:34bit in the story of scripture. We need to get some context for
- 3:38this story, and that context is found in the previous chapter at
- 3:41the end of Acts chapter 4. In Acts 4 we read some pretty
- 3:46incredible stories about the opposition that Jesus followers
- 3:51began to experience after Jesus resurrection and ascension.
- 3:55Peter and John had healed someone outside of the temple.
- 3:59Can you imagine? They healed somebody and they
- 4:02got arrested for it. They got arrested for it by the
- 4:05Jewish leaders, and they gave their testimony.
- 4:09They declared that they weren't going to do anything other than
- 4:12what Jesus was leading them to do.
- 4:14And so their arrests, coupled with that determination to
- 4:18continue to follow God's leading, it began to fortify the
- 4:22young church so that they began to pray that God would do even
- 4:27more, that God would move in even more miraculous ways, that
- 4:30people would be able to see the power that was in the name of
- 4:35Jesus, despite the reaction that they knew it was going to
- 4:38receive from the Jewish leaders. And then we get a brief synopsis
- 4:44of the character that began to develop within this earliest
- 4:49form of the church. And so we read in Acts chapter
- 4:534, verses 32 to 36, it says all the believers were one in heart
- 4:59and mind. No one claimed that any of their
- 5:02possessions were their own, but they shared everything they had
- 5:06with great power. The apostles continued to
- 5:08testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God's grace
- 5:13was so powerfully at work in them all that there was no needy
- 5:17persons among them. For from time to time those who
- 5:21own land or houses sold them, brought the money from the
- 5:24sales, and put it at the apostles feet, and it was
- 5:26distributed to anyone who had need.
- 5:30Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus whom the apostles called
- 5:34Barnabas, which means son of encouragement, sold a field he
- 5:38owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles feet.
- 5:43Right. This is the context for the
- 5:46story of Ananias and Sapphira. 4 things I see happening in this
- 5:51short passage. There was a unity between the
- 5:55believers. They were of 1 heart and one
- 5:58mind misled them to stop seeing their possessions as something
- 6:04which existed only for their own benefit.
- 6:08So they began to share with those who were in need anyone
- 6:12who was in need. And the apostles continued to
- 6:14point to the resurrection of Jesus.
- 6:17They didn't allow Peter and John's arrest to deter them.
- 6:21And finally, we see God's grace. The transforming power of God's
- 6:26presence. Was that work among them All
- 6:30right? This is how the earliest church
- 6:33began to be described. This is who God was shaping them
- 6:36to be as a community of faith. They were committed to the good
- 6:41news of Jesus. They were experiencing God's
- 6:44grace. This led to a supernatural unity
- 6:47among them, which was practically demonstrated in the
- 6:51way they used what God had given them to bless the entire
- 6:55community. And did you notice at the end
- 7:00that little blurb of a story about a man named Joseph who was
- 7:05also called Barnabas? If you keep reading in Acts,
- 7:08you'll find that he becomes a key figure alongside the apostle
- 7:13Paul. But, but Luke tells us here that
- 7:15Barnabas sold a field he owned and he gave the proceeds of that
- 7:20sale to the apostles to use in whatever way the church might
- 7:24need. That's the context for the story
- 7:29of Ananias and Sapphira. So with that in mind, now we can
- 7:34look at their story, right? So we have Ananias and Sapphira.
- 7:39Remember, this is a different Ananias than we spoke about
- 7:43couple months ago when we were talking about Paul and Damascus.
- 7:45But Ananias and, and Sapphira, they're a married couple who see
- 7:50what's going on around them in the church, right?
- 7:54They're, they're believers. They're part of the community
- 7:56and they see what's happening. They decide they're going to be
- 8:00a part of what's going on, except they decide that they
- 8:05want to appear generous toward the church and those in need,
- 8:10and they want to benefit themselves.
- 8:14So they sell some land that they own.
- 8:16They bring some of the money to the apostles, having agreed
- 8:20between the two of them to tell everyone that they sold the land
- 8:24for the amount that they were donating, rather than being
- 8:26honest about how much they were giving.
- 8:30Right. If if Ananias and Sapphire had
- 8:32sold the land and come to the apostles saying we sold the land
- 8:37for $4000 and we're bringing $3000 to support those in need,
- 8:44I don't think there'd be a story about them in the Bible.
- 8:47I don't think they would have ended that day 6 feet
- 8:51underground and I don't think anyone in the early church would
- 8:57have cared, Right. You see, the real issue in the
- 9:02story of Ananias and Sapphira wasn't the the percentage of
- 9:06money that they gave to the church, or even that they held
- 9:10some back because that they lied about it, right?
- 9:14They lied to the church and they lied to God and friends, God
- 9:21cares more about our integrity than he does about the amount of
- 9:27money that we can give him, right?
- 9:31Does God take what we offer him and bless it and use it?
- 9:35Absolutely. But he's also the God who can
- 9:39make some coins appear in the mouth of a fish so that Peter
- 9:42could go and pay the temple tax for him and Jesus, right?
- 9:46He's not primarily worried about how much money we can give him.
- 9:51He cares about our hearts in the giving.
- 9:55And in the church, we sometimes talk about a concept called
- 9:59tithing, although I don't think I have since I've been here.
- 10:03I'm sure at some point you've heard sermon on tithing.
- 10:07It was a Jewish concept that meant giving back to God, right,
- 10:12and to the religious establishment.
- 10:15And it was an amount fixed at 110th of whatever you earned or
- 10:20farmed or so on. It was a principle that goes
- 10:24back all the way to the story of of Abraham, right?
- 10:30Where one time after a battle, a mysterious king named
- 10:36Melchizedek, who's also described as a priest of the
- 10:39Most High God, he comes out and meets Abraham as he's returning
- 10:43from battle. And Melchizedek blesses him, and
- 10:47Abraham decides he's going to give Melchizedek 110th of the
- 10:52plunder from the battle in in response to the blessing that
- 10:56God has given him. And then through the Mosaic Law,
- 10:59it became the way that the Levites and the priests and the
- 11:02temple and all of that were supported in their ministry by
- 11:06people giving a 10th of what they grew, the animals they
- 11:10raised, what they earned doing carpentry or masonry or
- 11:14whatever. Now, some in the church want to
- 11:20make tithing the standard of giving for Christians today,
- 11:25right? Every Christian.
- 11:27If you're really serious, you should give 10% of what you get.
- 11:32They argue that Jesus never rescinded the command to tithe,
- 11:37right? And so it must still be in
- 11:40effect. And listen, I'm not against
- 11:44tithing. I'm not against supporting the
- 11:47work of God or anything like that.
- 11:49I just think that in light of the teaching that we see from
- 11:52Jesus and the rest of the New Testament in regard to money,
- 11:57tithing doesn't go far enough. All right?
- 12:00I think for Christians, tithing is a good starting point, but it
- 12:04was never intended to be the final goal of our giving.
- 12:09Jesus was far more concerned about the orientation and the
- 12:12generosity of people's hearts than he was about the actual
- 12:16amount they gave, right? We follow, we serve.
- 12:21We have a God who is extremely, ultimately generous, and he
- 12:29wants to shape us as a people into a people who reflect his
- 12:33character. He wants us to be generous.
- 12:39Remember the story from the gospel of of the widow that
- 12:44Jesus praised because she came to the temple and she dropped in
- 12:48her last two pennies? Remember that story, some of
- 12:52you, I see some heads nodding, I see some eyes glazing over.
- 12:55Sorry. She gave those last two pennies
- 13:00and Jesus said she gave more than all of the rich people who
- 13:05had given their tithe because they gave out of their
- 13:09abundance. But she gave all that she had to
- 13:14live on. The amount of money she had
- 13:19wasn't the limiting factor. It reminds me of what Paul wrote
- 13:24to the church in Corinth in in second Corinthians and and
- 13:28rather than telling you what he wrote, let me just read it for
- 13:30you. Paul wrote in second Corinthians
- 13:32Chapter 9. He says, remember this, whoever
- 13:37sews sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows
- 13:42generously will also reap generously.
- 13:45Each of you should give what you've decided in your heart to
- 13:49give, not reluctantly or under compulsion.
- 13:52For God loves a cheerful giver, and God is able to bless you
- 13:57abundantly, so that in all things, at all times, having all
- 14:03that you need, you will abound in every good work.
- 14:06As it is written, they have freely scattered their gifts to
- 14:10the poor. Their righteousness endures
- 14:11forever. Now he who supplies seed to the
- 14:15sower and bred for food, will also supply and increase your
- 14:20store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your
- 14:23righteousness. You will be enriched in every
- 14:25way so that you can be generous on every occasion and through US
- 14:30your generosity will result in Thanksgiving to God.
- 14:34This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of
- 14:37the Lord's people, but is also overflowing in many expressions
- 14:41of thanks to God because of the service by which you have proved
- 14:45yourselves. Others will praise God for the
- 14:48obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of
- 14:51Christ and for your generosity and sharing with them and with
- 14:55everyone else. And in their prayers for you,
- 14:57their hearts will go out to you because of the surpassing
- 14:59blessing grace God has given you.
- 15:01Thanks be to God for this indescribable gift.
- 15:09Paul says that we should give whatever is in our heart to
- 15:14give, whatever we've decided in our hearts to give.
- 15:18Imagine if Ananias and Sapphira had the chance to hear that
- 15:22instruction, that letter to the church in Corinth, that there
- 15:26shouldn't be a compulsion to give a certain amount, an amount
- 15:31or or a certain percentage of what we've been given.
- 15:36We should give freely and generously with thanks to God.
- 15:40But, but there's also a principle here that Paul derives
- 15:45from sowing, right? Which is when a farmer goes out
- 15:48and he's scattering the seed on the field, right?
- 15:52The seed that will grow into the the crop that he will harvest.
- 15:56And if you're stingy in your sowing, guess what?
- 16:01Your harvest is going to be scarce too.
- 16:05But when you sow generously and you sow freely, that is when the
- 16:12harvest will be abundant. And it's true in our giving as
- 16:16well. God is able to bless us
- 16:19abundantly, but He blesses us so that we too can be a blessing.
- 16:26And while we don't give generously so that God will
- 16:30bless us generously, I think it's also true that God rarely
- 16:34blesses those who are stingy in their generosity.
- 16:40In fact, Paul goes on to say that the freedom with which we
- 16:44give to God and to those in need is actually the proof of what we
- 16:51say we believe. It's how we live out our
- 16:55gratitude for what God has done for us.
- 17:00It's the way we serve others because of our love for them,
- 17:04which God has given us. Similarly, when Paul was writing
- 17:10to Timothy, his son in the faith, the one he had kind of
- 17:14taken under his wing and trained up and mentored and sent out
- 17:17into ministry, he reminds Timothy that our character, the
- 17:22godliness that God wants to form in us, it's not a means for for
- 17:28gaining riches, right? Kids, if you want to get rich,
- 17:32don't go into ministry. But our character, the godliness
- 17:41that God wants to form in US, it's it's actually more
- 17:45important to pursue than riches. Paul says in first Timothy 6,
- 17:51beginning in verse 6, he says, But godliness with contentment
- 17:55is a great game. For we brought nothing into the
- 17:58world and we can take nothing out of it.
- 18:04No U-Haul hitch on the hearse, right?
- 18:06But if we have food and clothing, we will be content
- 18:10with that. Those who want to get rich fall
- 18:13into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful
- 18:17desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
- 18:20For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
- 18:26Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and
- 18:29pierced themselves with many griefs.
- 18:33All right. No matter how much money we
- 18:37accumulate, no matter how many possessions we're able to gather
- 18:41in our lives, we can't take it with us as a number of people in
- 18:49the older generations are are finding.
- 18:53Your kids and grandkids don't really want it either.
- 18:58You can't take it with you. It's not of eternal
- 19:03significance. The things that we can
- 19:07accumulate, a desire to get rich can actually become a temptation
- 19:12that leads us away from Jesus right when we think that we're
- 19:17self-sufficient and we can provide for ourselves.
- 19:19It's, it's not that money is evil in and of itself, but the
- 19:23love of money. It's the source of all kinds of
- 19:27evil, greed, manipulation, pride, selfishness, on and on
- 19:34and on, right. This is an echo.
- 19:37Paul's echoing here what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount
- 19:40when he was talking about money, which if you read through the
- 19:44Gospels, Jesus talks about money more than he talks about heaven
- 19:47and hell. It's important, but Jesus said
- 19:51in Matthew chapter 6, he said do not store up for yourselves
- 19:55treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, where
- 19:58thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves
- 20:02treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, where
- 20:06thieves do not break in and steal.
- 20:10Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
- 20:20We shouldn't store up treasures here on earth because we can't
- 20:24take it with us in in the end, it's going to rust or decay or
- 20:28fall apart and disappear. And then just Jesus gives us
- 20:33that famous one liner. And while it relates definitely
- 20:37to our our speaking about money and our relationship with money,
- 20:41it can be applied to far more than just money, right?
- 20:47Jesus says where your treasure is, there your heart will be
- 20:52also. What you treasure reveals what's
- 20:58actually in your heart. And as people who are called to
- 21:05deny ourselves, to follow the way of Jesus, it matters.
- 21:14It matters where our hearts are. It matters what we do with our
- 21:20money and our resources. Do we store up earthly treasures
- 21:25because we're trying to protect ourselves from too many rainy
- 21:29days, pretending that we can control what happens to us in
- 21:34life if our bank account is just big enough?
- 21:40Or maybe we're hesitant to give in those in need And, and we
- 21:43justify it on the assumption that that, well, they got there
- 21:47because of their own choices, or they're just going to take it
- 21:52and spend it on drugs or booze or junk.
- 21:57And, and by the way, we really need that next vacation anyway.
- 22:03Maybe we throw $20 in the offering plate so we feel like
- 22:08we're giving to God, but we just as easily dropped 50 or $100 on
- 22:12dinner last night, and we didn't really think much of either one
- 22:16anyway. Now listen, I'm not against
- 22:22savings accounts or retirement accounts or vacations or even
- 22:26nice meals. What I'm trying to get at is
- 22:32where our hearts are at. What do we treasure?
- 22:38What are we looking to for our provision?
- 22:43I'm not talking about money this morning, because I want to, I
- 22:48promise. And I'm not talking about money
- 22:51because I'm trying to get you to give more to the church.
- 22:54Contrary to worldly belief, the offering plates aren't actually
- 22:58emptied into my pockets. We're talking about money this
- 23:06morning because our giving is an issue of discipleship.
- 23:13And if Jesus isn't Lord of our debit cards or our checkbooks,
- 23:18if he doesn't have a say over where and how we use our money,
- 23:25then we have to ask the question, Is Jesus really Lord
- 23:29of my life? I'm not asking you to take a vow
- 23:33of poverty this morning, that I am inviting you to ask the
- 23:39Spirit to reveal any areas of your financial life where He's
- 23:46asking you to. Maybe to deny yourself for the
- 23:51sake of what God wants to do in the world and for the sake of
- 23:55others. Because ultimately, everything
- 23:59we have belongs to God. We don't own any of it, but He's
- 24:04entrusted it to us, to steward it, to care for it, to use it
- 24:08well and responsibly. And so, as John Wesley's sermon
- 24:12on the use of money sums it up, he says earn all you can, save
- 24:17all you can, and give all you can.
- 24:24Encouragement is to sow generously, to live simply, to
- 24:31give cheerfully and with integrity, to deny yourself, to
- 24:39be content in every circumstance, because this is
- 24:47the way of the Jesus who calls us to deny ourselves, to pick up
- 24:53our cross and follow Him. Let's pray together.
- 25:05Jesus, we are here this morning and we are grateful for the ways
- 25:12that you have blessed us, for the ways you have provided for
- 25:19us. God, we acknowledge all we have
- 25:27has come from you. You are the Father of Light's.
- 25:32Every good and perfect gift comes from you.
- 25:39You've given so freely and so generously to us, and you call
- 25:46us to be like you. You call us to share your
- 25:50character, to be generous ourselves, as a sign of our
- 25:57gratitude to you for all that you've done, but also as a sign
- 26:02of our love for others, people in the world who you love
- 26:09dearly. So, Jesus, would you teach us
- 26:15what it means to deny ourselves not, not to harm ourselves, not
- 26:23to take food out of the mouths of our children, but to be able
- 26:30to follow you well, to look to you as the one who provides all
- 26:37that we need rather than our paycheck or our bank account.
- 26:45So just in these next few moments, as we prepare to close
- 26:48the service, would you continue speaking to us?
- 26:54Would you show us anywhere in our lives?
- 26:58Or maybe we're holding on a little too tightly where you
- 27:03want to be. First, where you want to be
- 27:07Lord. Because Jesus, if you're not
- 27:11Lord of all, we've got to ask if you're Lord at all.
- 27:19So we give you ourselves this morning and pray this Jesus in
- 27:23your name, Amen.
