- 0:00This is Retro Sports Radio. Visit RetroSeasons.com for more sports history.
- 0:07The Boston Red Sox faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for opening day on Sunday, April 12, 1959.
- 0:16Boston was managed by Pinky Higgins and had been an average team for several years.
- 0:21With no real star talent behind legend Ted Williams, the Bo Sox languished between 3rd and 6th place throughout the 1950s.
- 0:28The Yankees entered the 1959 season as world champions, having defeated the Braves in 7 games in 1958.
- 0:36Casey Stengel was entering his 11th season as manager, which included 7 championships in the previous 10 years.
- 0:42This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Delaney, Red Barber, Phil Rizzuto, and Mel Allen.
- 0:50It's Yankee baseball time again. The Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox from Yankee Stadium brought to you by P. Valentine & Sons,
- 0:59brewers of famous 3-ring Valentine beer, the Crisp Refresher, and the Atlantic Refining Company and your friendly Atlantic dealer,
- 1:07who offers you Atlantic Imperial gasoline, the gasoline to keep your car on the go.
- 1:13Your host for the first half of the game, the Atlantic Refining Company and your Atlantic dealer,
- 1:18the man who keeps your car on the go.
- 1:23This is Bob Delaney speaking to you from Yankee Stadium in New York where at long last we might say, opening day is at hand.
- 1:30After two days of rain, the weatherman has cooperated to the extent that it is not raining, but the temperature is no higher than 42 or 43 degrees,
- 1:41a slate gray overhead with a distinct thread of rain, although the weatherman says that won't be a factor until later this afternoon.
- 1:48And the Yankees, very anxious to get opening day into the books, are playing ball today against the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:55For the last 25 minutes, we have been entertained by the ceremonies that are always attendant to opening day at any baseball park,
- 2:04whether it be at Yankee Stadium or in the most remote minor league operation.
- 2:09The raising of the flag and of course here at the stadium, also the ceremony of raising the American League Championship pennant,
- 2:17which flies very proudly just under Old Glory in straightaway center field.
- 2:22Yankee Stadium as we look out over it is in excellent shape.
- 2:25It has been graced by a brand new scoreboard which has taken the place of the familiar one in the same area.
- 2:32This gigantic scoreboard that I think outdoes any scoreboard in the major leagues,
- 2:36with just about every bit of information on it that you could possibly want to know.
- 2:40At home plate, the four umpires are going through the ritual with the two managers, Casey Stengel of the Yankees
- 2:47and Mike Higgins of the Boston Red Sox, going over the ground rules, and they'll be going over thoroughly today,
- 2:53of course, as they are at the beginning of each season, pointing out all the various aspects that go into the ground rules here at the stadium.
- 3:02The pitchers today will be as advertised Friday and again on Saturday.
- 3:06Bullet Bob Turley will go for the Yankees and he'll be opposed by Tom Brewer of the Boston Red Sox.
- 3:14The umpires have broken now from their conference and have moved to their position,
- 3:20so let's check the starting lineups for today's game.
- 3:25For the Red Sox, it'll be Don Budden leading off, playing shortstop.
- 3:29Pete Reynolds at second base, batting third, Gene Stevens in center field.
- 3:34At first base, a newcomer to the Red Sox, but a familiar hand in the American League, Vic Wirtz, playing first base.
- 3:41Jackie Jensen will be in right field.
- 3:44Frank Malzone at third base.
- 3:48Sammy White will catch and Tommy Brewer will pitch.
- 3:52Brewer has been a better than average American League pitcher,
- 3:55but his success against the Yankees has been on the rather meager side.
- 3:59However, this is another year and Brewer is hopeful to shake that Yankee jinx.
- 4:04While the world champion New York Yankees, Hank Bauer leads off, playing in right field.
- 4:09Seaburn in left field.
- 4:11Mickey Madeline center as the Yankees take the field.
- 4:16Batting fourth, Yogi Berra the catcher.
- 4:20Gil McDougall at second base.
- 4:23Carl Throneberry will play first base.
- 4:26Andy Carey at third base.
- 4:29Bobby Richardson will be the shortstop and pitching for the Yankees.
- 4:34The gentleman who received just prior to the start of the game the Cy Young Award for the outstanding pitcher in the American League, Bob Turley,
- 4:43a monument of strength to the Yankees last year, not only in the regular season but also very prominently in the World Series.
- 4:53All the Yankees have positioned themselves and were just a moment or two away from the start of the ball game.
- 5:06If the Yankees not been able to get today's ball game in, they would have had to wait until the 25th of this month for their opening game
- 5:14as the Yankees now will go on the road for two weeks, not returning until a week from yesterday.
- 5:19And they'll play a quick three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at the stadium, a Saturday game which will be ladies' day and a doubleheader on Sunday.
- 5:27And then the Yankees make their first trip west.
- 5:31The Yankees had that additional reason to want the weatherman to let them play today, and he just barely has let them play.
- 5:39The weather might be much more favorable for football today.
- 5:43And as a matter of fact, the championship game played here between the Baltimore Colts and the New York football Giants was in weather much more befitting baseball than today's.
- 5:53However, there will be much better weather en route later.
- 5:57It seems that opening days are quite often played in weather just like this.
- 6:02Bob Turley has come in from Wright Field where he's been warming up in the Yankee bullpen and is now taking his warm-up pitches with Yogi Berra, checking out on the scoreboard.
- 6:14And it is a mighty scoreboard, something to see when you come here.
- 6:19In the American League, Cleveland is playing in Kansas City. We'll have nothing on that game for a while.
- 6:24Baltimore and Washington have already been postponed. I understand it was postponed because of snow.
- 6:31Chicago and Detroit are underway. In the first inning, there is no score.
- 6:36In the National League, Cincinnati and Philadelphia are playing a doubleheader. The first game has gone two innings.
- 6:41There is no score. Los Angeles playing in Chicago. We have nothing on that yet.
- 6:45The weather at Pittsburgh was unfavorable for baseball, and as a result, the Milwaukee-Pittsburgh game was postponed.
- 6:53And San Francisco will play at St. Louis, and they'll be getting underway at approximately 20 minutes.
- 7:00Now the throw has been made down to second base.
- 7:07And Don Button is announced as the leadoff hitter for the Boston Red Sox.
- 7:11And so it's play ball as the Atlantic Refining Company and your neighborhood Atlantic dealer are set to bring you Yankee baseball as they will throughout the 1959 season.
- 7:23Bob Turley looking in to pick up his sign from Yogi Berra. Don Button squares away in the batter's box.
- 7:31And here's the first pitch of the ball game. In for a called strike.
- 7:37Brand new infield of 7,200 square feet of Marion Blue.
- 7:42Right field is the only area that they didn't have time to re-sod, and the re-sodding of that will begin tomorrow.
- 7:49Turley's second pitch is a change up on the inside for ball one.
- 7:56One ball, one strike.
- 8:00Jack Burns coaching it third. Del Baker coaching it first for the Red Sox.
- 8:04And this is the first batter of the first game. Kerr Blue outside.
- 8:08Berra short hops it out of his ball too.
- 8:11Two balls, one strike. Turley had a very sound spring pitching.
- 8:16He's in wonderful shape. He won about all the awards a fellow could win in the offseason.
- 8:26I feel around to what left on Button. Right hand hitting shortstop. Fastball is low inside and it is ball three. And Turley's behind three and one.
- 8:34Well the Yankees in the singles opening day defensive array. Turley pitching. Berra catching. Throneberry at first base.
- 8:42In fact Throneberry has quite a dry sense of humor. Saw him in the dugout.
- 8:47Let's see the pitches in for strike three too.
- 8:50Before the ball game started he said, well he said this would be a real mild day wouldn't it for Alaska.
- 8:58McDougall at second playing a very deep second base. He's back on the right center field grass.
- 9:04Richardson's opening in short. Kerr at third. The pitch is swung on foul by three too.
- 9:11Steven out in left field and he's wearing glasses. Now he wears them all the time under his doctor's instructions.
- 9:15If he's going to use them you might as well use them consistently.
- 9:19Mantle is in his familiar spot in center and Bauer in his equally familiar area out in right.
- 9:31Turley ready for his three two pitch. Again delivers low inside ball four and he walks the first man.
- 9:40He's on balls and the first man up is on. Actually have no score.
- 9:52Now we have Pete Reynolds who lost out at the very end of it last year to his teammate Ted Williams for the batting championship.
- 10:00It was decided the last day of the season. The thumper just kept on thumping.
- 10:07Rundle's crowd shooter left hand batter. Infield is up ready for a body. That's Higgins play.
- 10:14Turley delivers. It's a ball that sinks too low under the knee. Ball one.
- 10:20Very happy to tell you on opening day we have no change at our radio control.
- 10:24Taffy Deakin with us at spring training camp is sitting right here.
- 10:30We do have a new opening day statistician Pete Callison and we welcome him to the family.
- 10:41Pitch is a fastball outside ball two. Two balls and now strikes.
- 10:50Turley always does a lot of labor when he pitches because he throws a great number of pitches.
- 10:55It doesn't bother him to throw 120, 130, 140. That's his type of pitching.
- 11:02He's walked his first batter. This is opening day. It was supposed to have been Friday and it was supposed to have been yesterday and now it's today.
- 11:13Turley checks his runner with a head bob. Pitches. Fastball over. First strike. Two balls. One strike.
- 11:23Reynolds had his best season last year. Hit 322. Right up to the last day fighting for the batting championship.
- 11:39Low outside ball three.
- 11:51Turley in a hole. Three and one. Gee the big new scoreboard's a beauty.
- 11:59Oh you don't need any glasses to help you read that.
- 12:04We have no score. Turley pitching deliberately. Walked his first batter behind three. One on the second.
- 12:10Pitches and Reynolds hits the ground ball a second. Like Dougaloff with all the riches. One heart to throw to first. Double play.
- 12:19So Reynolds going after the three one pitch. Hit it about three quarter speed down the second and it was Mike Dougal to Richardson.
- 12:29And on over to Thornberry at first to the DP. Two men out.
- 12:35And we have Gene Stevens. He jammed his thumb at the base. His right thumb. About a dozen days ago.
- 12:46The hand is not right but with Williams not here. Stevens is in there.
- 12:53He's a big tall range of fellow. He's about six four six five. Left hand hitter. Turley throws him a change of speed.
- 13:00Pitch high outside. Let him see it. Ball one.
- 13:06Outfield pulled around to the right.
- 13:12Curve ball is low outside ball two.
- 13:18Two balls no strikes.
- 13:27Eddie Rommel working balls and strikes. At first a long career of the pitch outside ball three.
- 13:36Long career as a pitcher. Pitch for County Max Athletics.
- 13:47Been around this league a long time.
- 13:51Ball strike. That's a three one pitch over.
- 14:00Rommel is the second better number in the league. Bill Summers starting his league in 33.
- 14:06That's a ground ball hit to the right side. Mike Dougal is up with it. Over to first in time for the out.
- 14:11And it's one two three. Rommel started in this league in 38.
- 14:16Two.
- 14:19Nothing across. And the score at the end of the first half of the opening inning of opening day.
- 14:28Red Sox nothing and the Yankees getting ready to hit.
- 14:33You know the nicest thing about spring is longer daylight to make going places and saying things in your car so much easier.
- 14:40So make the most of spring daylight driving. Fill her up with Atlantic imperial gasoline.
- 14:46That's the gasoline that keeps your car lively with all the pep and power your engine can deliver.
- 14:52You like the smooth hum that gives your motor. That's music to a motorist's ear.
- 14:57Drive in at your Atlantic dealer. He's the man who keeps your car on the go.
- 15:02Just say Atlantic imperial and get the gasoline that's better to start with.
- 15:07Better to say with and economical in the long run.
- 15:12Bob Turley's control off just a trifle in the first inning.
- 15:15But nonetheless he was able to get the big pitch into Pete Reynolds on the three one pitch and get Pete to bang into a quick double play.
- 15:23And then three and one on Gene Stevens got Stevens hit an identical ball to second base.
- 15:29Pattern of Turley over the past two years has been if he has trouble it usually comes in the first inning.
- 15:39If he gets off the hook in the first two innings or so Bob's control usually comes back to him and he pitches the strong ball game that we're associated with that he's associated with.
- 15:50The Yankees now on offense will set up Hank Bauer and Norm Seaborn and Mickey Mantle in the bottom of the first inning.
- 15:57The wind today is blowing from left to right rather briskly.
- 16:03The flag being spread out at right angles as we look out the straightaway center field.
- 16:09Tommy Brewer blowing on his pitching hand picking up the sign from Sammy White and set to deliver the first pitch.
- 16:19Now here's red.
- 16:21Bauer right hand hitter. Brewer right hand pitcher delivers a fastball just outside waste half of all one.
- 16:28No score.
- 16:31If you just joined us Turley walked his first batter.
- 16:34Got the next one to bang into a double play and the third one to roll out.
- 16:38McDougall starting both of those plays.
- 16:40Second base.
- 16:42The ball one pitch is low outside a curve ball two.
- 16:47Two and 0.
- 16:52The Red Sox had just ideal spring training weather down at Arizona.
- 16:57Understand they had 45 days not a cloud.
- 17:00I might say it wasn't exactly that way in Florida.
- 17:03But then on their way home Bauer broke out on the squad.
- 17:07About half of them have been quite sick.
- 17:09Pitchers in there for a strike two and one.
- 17:13We told you earlier pitcher Bauer's field catches Sullivan and outfield a runner.
- 17:20Have been put on the train today and sent up to Boston.
- 17:26The two one pitch to Bauer is swung on and missed.
- 17:28There was a slider and Hank went for it.
- 17:32Two balls two strikes.
- 17:38We have a pretty strong wind that is blowing in from left field and going toward right.
- 17:43It's a cross wind across the top of the stand judging by the flag.
- 17:48The two two pitch swung on and missed.
- 17:51He broke it over there it was sinking and Bauer cut on it didn't get it.
- 17:55One up one down.
- 17:56Strike out for Tom Brewer.
- 18:01Now we have Marv Steven who hit a flat 300 last year without glasses.
- 18:06Well if he if he could see the man without glasses for 300 I have better hopes that with glasses he can see him better this year.
- 18:15Steven left hand hitter had a very steady a fine spring out to around toward right.
- 18:21Brewer delivers a fastball flipping the inside corner for a strike just under the hand.
- 18:26Rommel back of the plate Stevens at first and after second Rice at third.
- 18:34Novakash cold afternoon leading skies up above curve low inside all one one and one.
- 18:42The spinners are coming down the ballpark and standing around and not being able to get the season underway.
- 18:46I think got on everybody's nerves the last couple of days.
- 18:50I had a notion they were going to play this one today no matter what.
- 18:55But I had to.
- 18:59And considering everything I think we have a excellent crowd.
- 19:03The pitch curve low inside to the shin ball to good one.
- 19:12Steven has become an increasingly good judge of a pit ball and they are the quiet fast.
- 19:23Quiet range the rob on top of a fellow.
- 19:29Is half blown on foul off tried to check too late on the Tinker.
- 19:36Two and two two balls to strike.
- 19:44Steven out of the box gets in.
- 19:49Touches spikes.
- 19:51Brewer doesn't waste much time.
- 19:53Slender.
- 19:54Trim.
- 19:55Neat working pitcher takes a sign promptly pumps pumps again delivers and as a ball hits sharply through the second base in the right field and Steven is on.
- 20:07He got that one throw it in the hole between first and second run escape all the guy that's love for the ball but the ball bounced up over the glove and went out of the right field.
- 20:18And it is the first hit of the year at Yankee Stadium.
- 20:25Steven single the right and he's on and upset Mickey Mantle.
- 20:32Mantle hit three or four last year.
- 20:36The only batter in the American League to get 100 walks.
- 20:39He got one hundred and twenty nine.
- 20:41We have no score.
- 20:42I feel deep right on Mickey was hitting left handed against the Boston right hander.
- 20:48Change up his high outside for a ball.
- 20:56Works holding first base against Steven who's the first runner here in the first inning.
- 21:03Brewer in position.
- 21:05Beals.
- 21:19Just the start of the ballgame and just the start of the season as far as the stadium is concerned as far as these two ball clubs are concerned.
- 21:32One set Texas on pitches.
- 21:36Mantle swings and hits a high foul back out of five.
- 21:46Looking around the big news scoreboard.
- 21:51Milwaukee at Pittsburgh in the National League has been postponed.
- 21:56Baltimore at Washington in the American League has been postponed.
- 22:00Chicago's at Detroit.
- 22:03They're playing with Chicago leading three nothing into two innings.
- 22:07Since that is it's Philadelphia in the National League and those scored the end of two there and that gets you up to date.
- 22:11Los Angeles is going to start at Chicago and San Francisco at St. Louis.
- 22:15Pitches numbers are up.
- 22:18We run it all down for at the end of the inning.
- 22:22Brewer pitches one and two. Mantle swings as a ball driven straight out to center fielder Stevens who makes the catch.
- 22:30He just had to back up two steps.
- 22:31Never having to take his eye off the ball.
- 22:33So it's a line drive shot right at the center fielder and we have two out.
- 22:38And to the dollar bill Mr. Barrow.
- 22:42Hit 260 last year.
- 22:47We've got so many records that if we start to read them off we've missed a lot of play by players.
- 22:57He's truly one of baseball's all time great catchers.
- 23:03They play him in the right field of course and drastically.
- 23:06Steven leads our first two out. No score.
- 23:11Curveball is in for a strike.
- 23:15And one make no mistake about it.
- 23:18Brewer has a very good curve.
- 23:25Ian Charlie.
- 23:27I've been the opening day pitches now for three days.
- 23:31Fastball swing on hit out to center field.
- 23:33Stevens comes on can't get it to base hit.
- 23:35Steven around second has to hold on.
- 23:38He took a long turn and had to dive back.
- 23:40So Barrow hits a single in the straight away center field.
- 23:44He's got a good first and second.
- 23:48Well you know you want a long time down at spring training camp where he got his first hit.
- 23:52But he takes care of matters once the barrel rings his first time up.
- 23:59We have no score to outmen at first and second and the hitter is Gil McDougal.
- 24:05Hit three hundred.
- 24:17Three hundred in the World Series and he played second base especially in those real tough five six and seven games like a real professional.
- 24:25He takes the curve over for a strike.
- 24:39McDougal right hand batter overly close stance.
- 24:42He's the man of many stances.
- 24:46Curveball is in strike two.
- 24:51Nothing into.
- 24:58Is that a hoping he can have a little traffic around that third base corner.
- 25:06McDougal asked for time steps out at the batter's rousing bag.
- 25:20Gil hit 250 in the regular season and then woke up in the World Series which is typical of him.
- 25:28Looking for the third out which sometimes can be elusive.
- 25:33But you fastball inside.
- 25:36McDougal said well hey didn't that pick me on the sleigh or my elbow.
- 25:40And Roberts says no not quite.
- 25:45One ball two strikes.
- 25:52Two men are out. Yankees have two on Saban and Barrett.
- 25:58Each with a single.
- 26:04Roll with a pitching advantage one and two delivers the curve swung on as a ball hit out but right field and it is in for a base hit.
- 26:12And Saban is coming in to score the first run and around to third goes Farah.
- 26:17Jensen had to come fix the ball on the short half and he had no play.
- 26:21And it is one or nothing in favor of the world champion.
- 26:27McDougal hit it right off the end of his bat.
- 26:29Got a half dunked it in the short right field.
- 26:33So Yankees now have one in the bank.
- 26:38Runners at first and third are still two out here in the first inning opening day.
- 26:46Weatherman saw to it that we didn't have opening day until today.
- 26:52Bob Thornberry getting the nod at first base today.
- 26:56Scarned with a bad back takes a curve in for a strike left hand hitter.
- 27:01He's a dangerous batter if he gets his pitch because he hits his power.
- 27:07And he had an excellent spring.
- 27:10He just hit that ball all over Florida.
- 27:16When it wasn't raining down there.
- 27:19That field toward right.
- 27:21Pass ball swung on and there's a line driving to right center for a base hit.
- 27:24Farah is scoring and McDougal is on his way to third base.
- 27:27Jensen's throw is cut off at short to hold the bat at the first base.
- 27:31That's two nothing New York.
- 27:37Bob Thornberry was hitting down south.
- 27:41So he's getting his chance today.
- 27:44Probably drilled a solid base hit in.
- 27:49So four singles, two runs accounted.
- 27:52It is still two out.
- 27:54And Andy Kerry the seventh Yankee to come out from the first inning.
- 28:05That's the first baseball game at Yankee Stadium since the World Series.
- 28:11Brewer delivers a curve swung on and grounded foul outside third base.
- 28:28Ramo does self home play.
- 28:32Two nothing.
- 28:33They were the Yankees.
- 28:40Ball in position deals change up on the inside.
- 28:44Ball one.
- 28:46One and one.
- 28:50Thornberry is the runner at first.
- 28:52McDougal is the runner at third.
- 29:08The fastball that ticks the bat for an accidental foul.
- 29:14Kerry was falling back from a high inside fastball that went off the bat.
- 29:18The runners of course broke and each went 90 feet.
- 29:21But the foul ball called with strike two.
- 29:24Makes it a dead ball and the runners have to return.
- 29:26McDougal the third.
- 29:28Thornberry the first.
- 29:30So Kerry.
- 29:33He's got out of the way of what would have been ball two and have a count of two and one.
- 29:38As the accidental foul and he now gets back at the bat with the actual card being ball one strike two.
- 29:51Brohams under right handed delivers a curve swung on and missed strike three.
- 29:55So he finally gets out of it.
- 29:57Not before the Yankees count two runs on four hits.
- 30:01And at the end of the first inning.
- 30:04New York two runs four hits and no errors.
- 30:06And Boston no runs no hits and no errors.
- 30:09And Big Charlie who won 21 in the league last year and then picked up two more against Milwaukee goes out to the mound.
- 30:16A rich man this early in the ball game.
- 30:18Well we promised you other scores and let's take care of that.
- 30:22Cleveland and Kansas City postponed because of rain.
- 30:26Baltimore to Washington postponed because of rain.
- 30:29At the end of three innings Chicago at Detroit Donovan going for the White Sox and Larry going for Detroit.
- 30:35It is three to Chicago cash at a home run in the first inning with one man on for the White Sox.
- 30:43Certainly they're getting home runs this early part of the season.
- 30:46I know Lopez hopes it can continue.
- 30:48Cincinnati is at Philadelphia at the end of two innings with no score.
- 30:52Lawrence for Cincinnati.
- 30:53Gomez for Philadelphia. Time has been called because of rain.
- 31:00Los Angeles at Chicago.
- 31:02Colfax for the Dodgers and Phillips for the Little Bears.
- 31:06No score in with the first inning.
- 31:08A walk at Pittsburgh postponed because of snow.
- 31:11San Francisco at St. Louis McCormick to San Francisco and Marzal to St. Louis.
- 31:16The game has not begun.
- 31:18Rather interesting that San Francisco recently got Sam Jones from St. Louis.
- 31:24And if I read the papers correctly Mr. Jones sort of stirred up a little controversy by pitching and winning easily against his ball.
- 31:32Clever traded him away last night.
- 31:40Well Vic Wirtz is coming up for his first official at bat as a member of the Red Sox.
- 31:44They count on him to increase their power and to give them this sort of a power list.
- 31:50Runnels, Williams, Wirtz and Jensen.
- 31:57Of course Williams is not here.
- 32:02The ball game has been televised on back to Boston and I imagine Sid or has got both eyes a-winking up there.
- 32:11Moving into the second inning it is 2-0 for the New York.
- 32:16We're delighted that Armed Forces Radio is carrying the play-by-play today to our service personnel all over the world.
- 32:28Curly's first pitch to Wirtz is ball one.
- 32:33Fastball is in for a called strike, one and one.
- 32:38Wirtz is a dangerous batting.
- 32:42He's a very courageous fella. He had a folio a couple of years ago.
- 32:46I think they got over it. Takes strike two. Curly let up, had it on the outside.
- 32:51Wirtz came down, took a hit from the swing and decided he wouldn't swing and Rommel says it's a strike anyhow.
- 33:01One ball, two strikes.
- 33:03Wirtz swinging from the end, left hand hitter.
- 33:07Strike three. Curly took a little curve, had him and Wirtz walks away.
- 33:15I don't think he felt too complimentary toward umpire Rommel.
- 33:24But that is understandable when you've had a third strike called on you.
- 33:30Now we have the player voted the most valuable in the league last year, Jackie Jensen.
- 33:39Right hand hitter.
- 33:43Takes a fastball inside.
- 33:49Jensen knocked in 122 counters last season.
- 33:59Curve ball high inside, drives him back and down, ball two.
- 34:08Two and oh.
- 34:15Went out, the whitey on, second inning.
- 34:22Big strapping right hand to Curly, no wind up, pitches a fastball low outside, ball three. So he's quick in a hole.
- 34:38This is opening day on it for the Yankees until Saturday, April 25.
- 34:45Fastball is laid in for a strike.
- 34:47That'll be ladies day girls. Orioles will be here Saturday, April 25, ladies day and then a double header Sunday, April 26.
- 34:59Fastball fouled off.
- 35:02Break two.
- 35:05Then the next business here at the stadium will be Washington Saturday, May 9. That'll also be ladies day.
- 35:22Pitches in, call strike three. He got a fastball on the inside and Charlie has picked up two call strikeout victims here in the second inning.
- 35:40Actually the real work here at the stadium gets underway on Saturday, the 9th of May, Washington comes in and a double header the next day. Then the Western Club starts coming through.
- 35:53That's the beginning of the first real home stand. Curve ball is in to Malzahn for a call strike.
- 35:59That's a big curve, Malzahn fell back proper and then the pitch still got the inside.
- 36:06Starting on May 9, the Yankees are going to be home practically all that month.
- 36:12What it is this year is that the curve inside falls through.
- 36:19Is that the Yankees will not get going so early in the season but will finish it home.
- 36:24Last year they pretty much finished on the road in September.
- 36:28That's where it is often in years.
- 36:30Two-nothing New York, Charlie's pitch, curve's thrown on ground and wide at third base. Kerry scoops it, fires over to Thornberry and time by three steps and Malzahn is out.
- 36:40And it is one, two, three in the top of the second and the score at the end of an inning and a half of opening day.
- 36:46The Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 36:50You know I've gotten in the habit of writing notes to myself of things that I ought to do.
- 36:54I notice here that I made a note to take my car to my Atlantic dealer for a safety surface lubrication.
- 37:00With the spring driving season at hand, that's a smart thing for you to do too.
- 37:04You see, your Atlantic dealer gives your car expert lubrication following the specifications that have been set down by the manufacturer.
- 37:12And then at no extra cost he checks many safety areas that if neglected could cause you trouble.
- 37:17Like windshield wipers, battery, tires, radiator, the fan belt, muffler, the tailpipe.
- 37:23Then you've got a written record of the work done and the condition of your car.
- 37:27Pretty good idea, don't you think?
- 37:29So make a note now to get an Atlantic safety surface lubrication soon from your Atlantic dealer.
- 37:35The man who keeps your car on the go.
- 37:41Moving into the bottom of the second inning for the Yankees, it'll be Richardson, Turley and Bauer.
- 37:46The Yankees got two runs in the bottom of the first inning on four singles.
- 37:51Seaburn singles with one out, then after Mantle lined the center, Barrow singles Seaburn to second,
- 37:56and then McDougal dropped a single into right field, a bloop job that brought home Seaburn,
- 38:02and then Throneberry rifled a single into center for the other run.
- 38:05So it's two-nothing as Richardson steps in and waits the first pitch.
- 38:10Okay, Red.
- 38:11And RBI, right hand hitter.
- 38:14Brewer, right hander, fires a fastball over, sidearm for a call strike.
- 38:19Richardson began at shortstop, a position he hadn't played in quite a few years, rather erratically,
- 38:24and then soon set it down, played out there at the end of spring training like he owed it,
- 38:30pitches low for a ball, one-on-one.
- 38:35The Yankees are two-up going into the last of the second inning.
- 38:46And he delivers, pitch inside, off the catcher, White-Smith, ball two.
- 38:52Two balls, one strike.
- 38:57One of the familiar figures of an opening day at the stadium has been sincerely missed,
- 39:06the veteran writer of the World Telegram, the son Dan Daniels.
- 39:13Pitches, Marnadette and Miss, strike two.
- 39:18Dan was operated on two days ago at University Hospital in Manhattan,
- 39:25and all reports of the convalescing very satisfactorily and resting comfortably.
- 39:31But two-two pitch swung on as a ground ball down too short.
- 39:37Up with it is buttoned, throws to first, in time, and rips himself.
- 39:42I want to say that for Daniel, he's resting as comfortably as he could not to be here at Yankee Stadium today.
- 39:52And also our congratulations to our associate Mel Allen,
- 39:58who received the 52th Association Award last evening that has done us the world of a story of,
- 40:04for his long service and work as a good serviceman.
- 40:11Well, here's the big pitcher, Bob Turley.
- 40:16Two-nothing ball game for the Yankees.
- 40:18Brewer delivers a fastball low inside.
- 40:21Turley bluffing a bond, finally had to skip rope, ball one.
- 40:34End of the first inning, Los Angeles at Chicago, no score.
- 40:40Pitch over for a called strike.
- 40:45Well, Cincinnati at Philadelphia, which got two innings in, has been postponed because of raves.
- 40:58Pitch swung on as a high fly ball that thrusts that button is under and takes it for the up.
- 41:06Felt you up two down, Hank Bauer, who was struck out by Brewer.
- 41:12Now comes up to try and make a man.
- 41:21Bauer's philosophy is you may strike me out, but not often.
- 41:27Overly close stance, outfield shades him into left.
- 41:32Two down, nobody on.
- 41:36Brewer working rapidly as is his custom, delivers a curve high inside for ball one.
- 41:42Friends, when you get out to state of you, you are certainly going to be pleased with the new scoreboard.
- 41:47Oh, it's a wonder.
- 41:52And not only got the stuff up there, but you can see it.
- 41:59Inside ball two.
- 42:02In the center of the scoreboard is movable tight.
- 42:05In other words, they can print messages up there.
- 42:07For example, the opening message was welcome to the 1958 World Champion Yankees in their opening day.
- 42:13Right now it says this is Charlie's first opening game start as a Yankee.
- 42:17Bauer hits a high foul back.
- 42:24So they can put any sort of information up there.
- 42:29News bulletin, anything else?
- 42:39If there's anything to be done to make this ball park better, the Yankees haven't heard about it yet.
- 42:49Brewer pitches, the fastball swung on, grounded down to third base half-three. Malzahn picks it up, barehanded throws.
- 42:55Not in time and Bauer beats it out for a base hit.
- 43:00Slow rolling ball up to third base, so Bauer gets his first hit of the year.
- 43:07With a single in the first inning and then scored the first run, steps it.
- 43:16Big range of left hand hitting left fielder.
- 43:25That wonderful spring.
- 43:32Malzahn takes a look at him, delivers a curve in there for a strike.
- 43:52Malzahn had 24 hits in spring training. Swings at the high foul out of play.
- 44:04Speaking about this wonderful new $300,000 scoreboard here at the stadium that you'll see when you come out,
- 44:11the master control control has almost 5,000 push buttons. Gives you an idea of what they can do with it.
- 44:25Two strikes to Stephen, two out, Bauer at first. Yankees leading two-nothing.
- 44:37Broadchucks first pitches, high inside for ball, ball one. Catcher fight returns, one and two.
- 44:54Arm is ready. Right handed deals and Stephen takes a curve low inside, ball two, two and two.
- 45:18Ball, two strikes.
- 45:27Bauer ready to go on anything with two out, pitches lead off first.
- 45:34The pitch is hung on, there's a ball hit out toward left field and it is dropping in for a base hit.
- 45:39Bauer's on his way to third base. To left field, a picture of Giger, throws the third and Bauer's out.
- 45:45Giger two miles on, Bauer trying to take the extra base on a dunk single into left is out at third.
- 45:52So it gives Stephen a single to left field to give him two for two for the year.
- 45:57Bauer is out stretching the left fielder to the third baseman.
- 46:01And Moran two hits, one left. And the score at the end are two innings, the Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 46:13Well this time of the year some people complain about spring fever. They do when we have spring weather anyway.
- 46:18Today you wouldn't likely have spring fever. I don't know about cures for people but I can tell you how to cure spring fever in that car of yours.
- 46:27Give it a tonic of Atlantic Imperial gasoline. Believe me that's the gasoline to give your car plenty of pep and power.
- 46:34Even makes older cars feel young again. You'll get maximum miles per gallon, you'll get real economy.
- 46:41So stop in at the Atlantic dealers and fill up with Atlantic Imperial.
- 46:45The gasoline that's better to start with, better to stay with all the way.
- 46:53Now let's pause for station identification. This is the home of Champions Baseball Network.
- 46:58At 1460 on the radio dial WOKO in Albany, New York.
- 47:02WOKO time 21 minutes before 3 o'clock. Current temperature is 42 degrees.
- 47:10Gary Geiger, the left fielder, will lead off while the Red Sox to be followed by Tom Brewer and then Don Button.
- 47:20It's 2-0 as we start the third inning. Bob Turley with a two run lead for the Yankees, set the pitch to Geiger.
- 47:29Central Post Office. The box is the same number as our year, 1959. New York 51, New York.
- 47:40Now we have Gary Geiger first up for the Red Sox, left hand hitting out fielder.
- 47:47And Turley gives them a low curve, ball one. Bob comes back with a curve low inside, ball two.
- 47:54Geiger and Wirtz came from the Cleveland club for a pierce hole.
- 48:03Geiger started out as a pitcher in the minor leagues, one year, one-twenty.
- 48:07Then switched over to outfielding and infielding and is now outfielding.
- 48:11Takes a call strike.
- 48:13Although last year at Cleveland, he twice was used for short rolls in the infield and pitched one two inning stint for the Yankees.
- 48:23Ground ball hit to the right side. Second baseman, Dougal, up with it over to Thornberry first and Geiger is out.
- 48:34Went up, went away. Turley has committed only one man to get on, his first batter, he walked him.
- 48:39Next man hit for a double fly and he's gotten everybody out.
- 48:43Sammy White hit 259, regular season last year. Rated one of the top receivers in the trade.
- 48:53Two-nothing, play for the Yankees.
- 49:05Turley right hand, the curve ball high outside, ball one.
- 49:10Bob has the fast ball, which of course the hitters are aware of and have to be on the alert for.
- 49:15But he's developed changes, speed pitches, breaking stuff.
- 49:23Delivers the fast ball in there for the strike. One and one, one ball, one strike.
- 49:39Turley using a no windup delivery, deals, fast ball low outside, ball two.
- 49:47Two and one, Turley pitching, Barrett catching, Thornberry at first, McDoogle at second, Richardson at short, Garriott third.
- 49:57Call, strike two over the outside above the knees. White doesn't think so, Rommel says, yes sir, it's two and two.
- 50:07Steven with two four two as in left, Madeline center, Bauer in right.
- 50:19One out and nobody on the third inning if you just got in with us, opening day here at the stadium.
- 50:25Curve swung on and lined, a short stop Richardson for the out.
- 50:30Two down and the Red Sox starting pitcher Tommy Breua is now coming out of his dugout.
- 50:37This dugout is on the third base side of home plate.
- 50:47Cleveland Kansas City has been postponed because of the weather.
- 50:55So let's see, four games postponed today.
- 51:01The ball club is giving up hard on Sundays so you can't get them back.
- 51:04Breua hits it the first pitch, a high pop fly that's crossed out Richardson, backs under on the grass in left field, makes the grab and that's it.
- 51:14So, Turley to get his first nine out has pitched to but nine men.
- 51:22Score at the end of two and a half, the Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 51:30Here's good news for everybody concerned with his family car.
- 51:33It's Atlantic premium motor oil, sealed for your protection in both one and five four cams.

- 52:16Atlantic premium for quick starts, less engine wear.
- 52:20Remember Atlantic keeps your car on the go.
- 52:32Mickey Mantle leading off of the Yankees in the bottom of the third inning.
- 52:39I feel deep, Brown put right, Brewer delivers and Mantle takes a fastball high outside, ball one.
- 52:47For the Red Sox it is Brewer dealing them, white receiving, Wirtz playing his first game for them at first base,
- 52:54Brown goes into the second, shortstop is Budden and the third baseman is Malzow.
- 52:59Ball one pitch, a little off the fastball, it's sank, good for a call strike.
- 53:07Gary Guygum played about 40 odd ball games in and out for the Indians last year's and left, Stephenson center.
- 53:15Right fielder is Jensen, Williams is up in Boston you know.
- 53:20Mantle bunt, throw off the mound, up with it, throws to first, in time and got him by Ahuska.
- 53:26Close, Mantle puts the ball a little close back to the mound.
- 53:34So he's out, he's bunt bit for a base hit.
- 53:38Pitcher to the first baseman covering.
- 53:43Yogi Baran, a single to center field, a line single in the first inning.
- 53:59Now the swings at the high fly ball, the straightaway center, Stevens is unwritten.
- 54:05He has it and we have two outs.
- 54:09The Yankees lead 2-0 here at the end of four innings at Detroit, the White Sox are one up, 3-2.
- 54:17We have the other two games in the league postponed, Cleveland, Kansas City, Baltimore to Washington.
- 54:23End of two innings in the National League, Los Angeles at Chicago, no score.
- 54:28San Francisco is getting ready to go out St. Louis, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Kansas.
- 54:35Rain, rain in Philadelphia and snow at Pittsburgh.
- 54:40Here's the McDougal, takes a curve low outside, ball one.
- 54:44Gill hit a single off the end of his bat in the right field, first inning, which got in the first drawn and made possible the scoring of the second.
- 54:54Kept it alive. Rowe works, fastball swung on, grounded foul by a yard outside third base.
- 55:03One and one.
- 55:17McDougal has his forward foot closer to the plate than his rear one, closed his stance, fouls off a curve, strike two.
- 55:28Gill keeps moving around up there. When he first came to the Yankees, he had an open stance, that forward foot was almost pointed at the third baseman.
- 55:35Right now it's about pointed at the second baseman.
- 55:39He's got a reason for it.
- 55:42Pitchers keep changing on him and he keeps changing on them.
- 55:47One, two, pitch. Fastball is right over.
- 55:49And Gill, who had seen two curves, suddenly looked at the fastball and had it.
- 55:54So, in the three innings, two runs, six hits and no errors for New York. No runs, no hits, and no errors for the Red Sox.
- 56:03Now we've got a young man coming over here.
- 56:08Let's see, this is going to be your third opening day at this microphone, isn't it Mr. Duzal?
- 56:12Right Red.
- 56:13How many openings for you down there on the playing field with that finger glove?
- 56:17I had 13 with the Yankees, Red.
- 56:19Oh, wonderful openings. A lot of butterflies, just like today back here.
- 56:24Well, happy number 16.
- 56:26Okay Red.
- 56:27Good to be with you at Melville.
- 56:28Certainly my pleasure too, Red.
- 56:31And there's always a lot of excitement in opening day ceremonies and the first game of the ball, regular season for the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
- 56:46Because there's a lot of worry.
- 56:49I know when I was playing, the thing that worried me the most was when I would get that first base hit.
- 56:56Bobby Brown, the Yankee shortstop and third baseman, who became quite a doctor.
- 57:04We both worried until we got that first base hit because there is a possibility of going through a full season without getting that hit.
- 57:10And since you get number one, you really worry.
- 57:14Here's a leadoff hitter, Don Budden, who walked in the first inning, takes a curve high inside ball one.
- 57:22Budden is the only man to reach first base against Bob Charlie, and that was on a base on balls after working the count to 3-2.
- 57:33Charlie delivers a fastball at top foul and out of play in the upper deck and back of home plate.
- 57:38One-on-one the count.
- 57:40Yankees leading 2-0 here in the top of the fourth.
- 57:45On a cold, windy day here at Yankee Stadium.
- 57:53You know it's cold.
- 57:56Happy Durkin and I both have gloves, top coats, hats.
- 58:03One-one pitch is planted down the first baseline, but it goes foul.
- 58:07Picked up by Marv Throneberry, who's playing first for the Yankees today.
- 58:15One ball, two strikes.
- 58:17The count on Don Budden.
- 58:19Shortstop for the Boston Red Sox.
- 58:21On deck, Pete Runnels.
- 58:29The wind is whipping out towards right field here at Yankee Stadium.
- 58:41Charlie sets on the mound with his no wind-up delivery.
- 58:43The slow curve is hit slowly out towards first.
- 58:45Throneberry over, up with it.
- 58:47Flips to Charlie, covering in time to get Budden.
- 58:51One away.
- 58:53That time Budden was fooled on a change-up curve ball and hit it off the end of his bat.
- 58:58A little twisting roller down the first baseline.
- 59:01That Throneberry flip to Charlie, 40 out.
- 59:03One away here's Pete Runnels, who bounced into a double play in the first inning.
- 59:10Runnels, who is the runner-up to Ted Williams for the batting crown.
- 59:15Last year's tight American League race.
- 59:20Left-hand hitter with a closed stance.
- 59:22Chokes up a little bit on the bat.
- 59:23Crouches at the plate.
- 59:26Carey moves in at third base.
- 59:29Charlie delivers a slow curve in the dirt ball one.
- 59:35Jack Burns coaching at third and Del Baker down at first for the Red Sox.
- 59:40Eddie Rommel calling balls and strikes.
- 59:46Charlie's next pitch is a curve that catches the outside corner.
- 59:49Strike one called. One more on the count.
- 1:00:01Yankee outfield plays Runnels straight away.
- 1:00:03There's a curve way outside and high ball two, two and one.
- 1:00:08Runnels can hit to all fields.
- 1:00:12Line drive tight, better. Not too much power.
- 1:00:16On deck, Gene Stevens.
- 1:00:26Charlie ready to two-one pitches foul to the right of home plate.
- 1:00:31Count even at two and two.
- 1:00:38It's certainly not a day for baseball in any sense of the word, either to play it or to watch it.
- 1:00:47But after being rained out for two straight days, the Yankees and the Red Sox are very happy to be able to play a game, regardless of the weather.
- 1:00:54And if you think it's bad here, they had 27 degree weather in Kansas City yesterday and played a game.
- 1:01:01The two-two pitch is hit on the ground, a shortstop. Richardson in, up with it.
- 1:01:05Throw to Throneberry in time to get Runnels and it's two away.
- 1:01:11Too hot and here's Gene Stevens who bounced to second base in the first inning.
- 1:01:19On deck, Vic Wirtz.
- 1:01:26Yankees came up with two runs in the first inning.
- 1:01:30Norm Stevens getting the first Yankee base hit of the year, scoring the first Yankee run after Burrows singles.
- 1:01:37And McDougal looped a single to right field. Then Throneberry single to drive in Burrows.
- 1:01:43Stevens, a left-hand hitter, takes a curve right down the middle, strike one call.
- 1:01:55Outfield shifted around towards right, slightly on Stevens. He takes a fastball below the knees, ball one, one-on-one.
- 1:02:05This is a rough day on ballplayers in particular because it's very cold outside of the pitcher and the catcher who do most of the work consistently and they keep pretty warm.
- 1:02:18A batter, if he should catch one on his fist, really feels it. You get one near the thumb and it'll swell right up.
- 1:02:26Outfielders catch a line drive or the infielders and their hands will be stinging for a week.
- 1:02:31There's a fastball hit deep to right center field. Mantle digging back to his left under it now and makes the catch just in front of the auxiliary scoreboard on the running track and deep right center field.
- 1:02:43The longest hit ball of the game thus far for the Red Sox and the top of the fourth, no runs, no hits, no Yankee errors, no one left.
- 1:02:51Score at the end of three and a half innings of play. The Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:02:57You know, it takes an expert to spot potential trouble in your car and one of the best in the business is your Atlantic dealer.
- 1:03:04Now that the spring driving season is here, why not let him get your car in top shape with an Atlantic Safety Service lubrication.
- 1:03:11In addition to a thorough going lubrication following the specifications set down by the manufacturer of your car,
- 1:03:18you get at no extra cost a complete checkup of the many safety areas that if neglected could cause you trouble.
- 1:03:24Tires, battery, windshield wipers, radiator, fan belt, muffler, and even the tailpipe.
- 1:03:30And you also get a written report covering the work done and showing you the condition of your car.
- 1:03:36Get a Safety Service lubrication today from your Atlantic dealer. The man who keeps your car on the go.
- 1:03:43Mr. Turley has pitched himself rather keen for innings.
- 1:03:49The Red Sox has had one base runner that was Don Budden who let off with a base on balls.
- 1:03:55He was quickly doubled up and since then Turley's been mowing them down.
- 1:04:01Brewer had a rough first inning, gave up four hits, a settle down since then.
- 1:04:06Marv Thornberry leading off and Brewer's first pitch is swung on.
- 1:04:13It's ground ball to second base, runnled up with a ball, quick throw to first in time and there's one out.
- 1:04:19One down as Andy Carey comes to the play.
- 1:04:27Okay, Phil. One away, here's Andy Carey who struck out swinging in the first inning.
- 1:04:35On deck, Bobby Richardson. Frank Crissetti coaching down at third and Ralph Hauke over at first.
- 1:04:42Yankees wouldn't seem the same without the old crow down there in the coaching box at third base.
- 1:04:49First pitch to Carey is a curve over strike one call.
- 1:04:56John Stevens umpiring at first, Larry Knapp at second and John Rice over at third.
- 1:05:07The right handed Brewer delivers a fast ball just low outside ball one, one and one.
- 1:05:18One ball, one strike, one out, no one on.
- 1:05:21Here in the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees leading two to nothing.
- 1:05:25One on one pitch is hit. Foul alongside of third. Malzone moving over near the coaches box.
- 1:05:31Crissetti now moves and Malzone almost dropped that ball.
- 1:05:35As a matter of fact, he thought he had dropped it.
- 1:05:37The wind that we told you was blowing towards right blew the ball towards third.
- 1:05:41It was in foul territory. Malzone caught the ball.
- 1:05:44It rolled up to the very tips of the fingers of his glove where there's no feeling.
- 1:05:49And Frank looked on the ground thinking he had dropped the ball but it just hung there.
- 1:05:53He's got a lot of white.
- 1:05:56Carey fouls out to Frank Malzone.
- 1:05:59Two away, here's Bobby Richardson who bounced the short in the second inning.
- 1:06:14First pitch to Richardson is a curve, strike one call on the inside corner.
- 1:06:19Red Sox have Gary Geiger in left, Gene Stephenson in center, Jackie Jensen in right.
- 1:06:24Frank Malzone at third, Don Budden at short, Pete Reynolds at second, Vic Wirtz at first, Sammy White catching.
- 1:06:30And Tom Brewer ready to deliver.
- 1:06:32The fastball is hit on the ground to first up with it on two hops.
- 1:06:35Vic Wirtz races to the bag for the unassisted put out.
- 1:06:40So for the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth, no runs, no hits, no Red Sox.
- 1:06:44There is no one left.
- 1:06:45They score at the end of four full innings, the Yankees two, and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:06:52And right now I'd like to mention that the second half of this game is being brought to you by the crisp refresher, Ballantine Beer.
- 1:06:59You know, Ballantine's a crisp kind of light with true lager flavor.
- 1:07:03That's what makes it the crisp refresher.
- 1:07:06No wonder Ballantine's the largest selling beer in the East.
- 1:07:11A quick look at the scoreboard in the American League, Cleveland playing at Kansas City is postponed because of rain.
- 1:07:18A double header, Baltimore at Washington also postponed because of rain.
- 1:07:24Chicago at Detroit at the end of five innings, that ballgame all tied up three and three.
- 1:07:30Dick Donovan going against Frank Larry.
- 1:07:33Cash homed in the first with one on for the White Sox.
- 1:07:36And Eddie Yost homed in the fifth with nobody on.
- 1:07:40Both their first of the year, three-three deadlock.
- 1:07:45And the National League, Cincinnati nothing, Philadelphia nothing at the end of two, Lawrence against Gomez.
- 1:07:52The Dodgers nothing and the Cubs nothing at the end of two and a half, Colfax against Phillips.
- 1:07:56Milwaukee at Pittsburgh postponed because of snow.
- 1:07:59And the Cardinals lead the Giants three to nothing at the end of one, McCormick against Mizell.
- 1:08:07Dick Wirtz fouls the first pitch back against the screen, strike one, as we open the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:08:12Wirtz was called out on strikes in the second inning.
- 1:08:18Big left-hand power header, quiet from the Cleveland Indians in an offseason deal.
- 1:08:28Fairley's next pitch is outside ball one, one on one.
- 1:08:31The Yankees lead two to nothing here in the top of the fifth inning on a perfect day for football.
- 1:08:42Even then it'd be a little cold watching a football game.
- 1:08:47The half-wall sails outside, ball two, two and one.
- 1:09:03Jackie Jensen is on deck with Frank Malzone to follow.
- 1:09:06This is the meat of the Red Sox batting order.
- 1:09:11Their power.
- 1:09:14The pitch is hit on the ground, back to the box, Fairley is up with it on two hops over to Throneberry and it's one away.
- 1:09:27One away, and the batter Jackie Jensen, who also was called out on strikes in the second inning.
- 1:09:37Fairley has allowed one man to reach first base, and that was the leadoff header, Don Budden,
- 1:09:41who walked in the first inning leading off the ball game.
- 1:09:44He was erased at the front end of a double play, and since then no one has reached first base.
- 1:09:53Jensen takes a fastball high, ball one.
- 1:10:00One ball, no strikes, one out, nobody on.
- 1:10:03Fairley ready where there's no wind-up delivery.
- 1:10:06The pitch to Jensen is a curve high inside, ball two, and we pause now for station identification.
- 1:10:17This is WOKO 1460 on the dial, Albany, New York.
- 1:10:21WOKO time three o'clock, current temperature 42 degrees.
- 1:10:27The next pitch to Jackie Jensen is low outside, ball three, a three-nothing count to Jensen.
- 1:10:38Fairley has been behind on quite a few batters, but has been able to come in with the ball when he needed it.
- 1:10:46Three-nothing pitch is right down the middle, strike one, call three and one.
- 1:10:50Jackie Jensen, the most valuable player in the American League last year.
- 1:10:56Right-hand batter, lots of power, swings and pops the pitch to short right field.
- 1:11:02Hank Bauer moving in under it and makes the catch for out number two.
- 1:11:12Two away and that'll bring up Frank Malzone, who bounced up there in the second inning.
- 1:11:25On deck, Gary Geiger.
- 1:11:37Bob Fairley takes that deep breath on the mound to relax.
- 1:11:42First pitch is a curve that's just below the knees, ball one.
- 1:11:49This year on the home of champions network, a real pro replacing another real pro.
- 1:11:56Bob Delaney taking over for Jeff Davis.
- 1:11:59Jeff unable to be with us this year.
- 1:12:02There's a curve that catches the outside corner, strike one, one of mine.
- 1:12:09Bob Delaney, who did such a wonderful job with Russ Hodges on the giant ball games
- 1:12:14before the Giants deserted us and moved out to San Francisco.
- 1:12:21One-one pitch curve high inside and Malzone has to hit the deck to get out of the way of that one.
- 1:12:26It was a slow curve, two balls and one strike.
- 1:12:43Fairly ready.
- 1:12:45Two-one pitch just outside ball three, three and one.
- 1:12:50Yankees lead two to nothing.
- 1:12:52We're in the top of the fifth inning with two out, no one on.
- 1:13:04Pitch is popped in the air and back of the plate, Yogi throws the mask away.
- 1:13:08Plenty of room under it and makes the catch for out number three.
- 1:13:15And for the Red Sox, in the top of the fifth, no runs, no hits, no Yankees, there is no one left.
- 1:13:22The score at the end of four and a half innings of play, the Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:13:28Say here's a song that'll make you snap to attention.
- 1:13:35To be crisp, a beer must be icily is light.
- 1:13:42With true lager flavor, crisp icily is right.
- 1:13:50Vividly golden, crisply clear, the crisp free pressure.
- 1:13:59Valentine, Valentine beer, hey get your cold beer.
- 1:14:06Hey get your Valentine, hey get your cold, cold beer.
- 1:14:11Get your ice cold Valentine beer.
- 1:14:17Valentine beer is a crisp kind of light with true lager flavor.
- 1:14:21No wonder it's the largest selling beer in the East.
- 1:14:24Enjoy the crisp refresher.
- 1:14:31And here's a fellow who, making the Yankee fans enjoy the game.
- 1:14:36Bob Curley, who is leading off for the Yankees here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:14:41Bob pops a short stop in the second inning.
- 1:14:47Fits a real strong game thus far.
- 1:14:49Tom Brewer out on the mound after a shaky first inning has settled down, shut the Yankees out.
- 1:14:53Here's a fastball in there, strike one call.
- 1:14:56Frank Crisetti runs out and picks up a couple of pieces of paper that are blowing around the infield.
- 1:15:03The Crow is still in real good shape, looks like he could go out there and play nine fast innings.
- 1:15:10Brewer's next pitch is a curve low, ball one, one on one.
- 1:15:15Big beautiful new scoreboard out in right center field.
- 1:15:27One-one pitch is hit on the ground, slowly the third, Malzone comes in up with it on the short hop,
- 1:15:31fires the first and Wirtz has to come off the bag, makes a nice play tagging Curley.
- 1:15:37On a slow hopper that Malzone had a chance, he threw a little wilder first.
- 1:15:42Wirtz leaped off the bag, made the catch and tagged Curley as he ran by.
- 1:15:47Five to three of you scoring, one away.
- 1:15:49Here's Hank Fowler who struck out and then beat out an infield single.
- 1:15:54One for two for Hank.
- 1:16:04Fowler swings a ground ball of third, Malzone is up with it.
- 1:16:07Over to first and it's two away.
- 1:16:14Hank Fowler who needs one more home to achieve the 150 mark, just bounces out third to first.
- 1:16:25With two out here's Norm Seabrook who has had a perfect day leading the American League in batting with an average of 1,000, two for two.
- 1:16:35He's at least tied for the league, can't hit any higher than that.
- 1:16:39Single to right, score to run and single to left.
- 1:16:43Left hand batter who had another fine spring, takes a change of pace outside and low ball one.
- 1:16:55The Yankees who have lost only two home opener since 1947 while winning ten.
- 1:17:04The pitch is fouled and back of the plate, out of play, strike one, one, one.
- 1:17:09The Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing, we're playing the bottom of the fifth, two out, nobody on.
- 1:17:29Mickey Madeline on deck, one on one count on Norm Seabrook, already kicked the pitch, hit slowly down the first base line.
- 1:17:36Vic Wirth picks it up with his foot on first base for out number three.
- 1:17:42And for the Yankees in the bottom of the fifth, no runs, no hits, no Red Sox errors, no one left to score at the end of five full innings.
- 1:17:51The Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:17:58Well, we're finally getting in this opening game after two miserable days of rain and cold weather.
- 1:18:05And after this single game, the Yankees will be touring the East the next two weeks.
- 1:18:09They return to the Yankee Stadium for a brief weekend set with the Baltimore Orioles on April 25th and 26th.
- 1:18:16Those will be the only days you'll have a chance to see your world champion Yankees in action until the first long home stand of the season starting Saturday, May the 9th.
- 1:18:25So plan now to be on hand to see the Yankees against the Orioles here on Saturday afternoon, April the 25th, the season's first ladies day and again on Sunday afternoon, April the 26th.
- 1:18:37The lights have just gone on here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:18:41The lights are on the first time this year that the lights have been on for a ballgame other than a football game here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:18:56Which kind of gives you the idea of what kind of a day it is here for opening day between the Red Sox and the Yankees, a cold, dark, dreary day.
- 1:19:09But we're seeing some mighty fine baseball.
- 1:19:14Bob Turley's first pitch to Gary Geiger is low inside ball gets away from Yogi.
- 1:19:19Geiger bounced the second in the third inning.
- 1:19:28Temperature can't be any higher than 40 degrees.
- 1:19:32Forty-two, Pappy tells me. I'm wrong again.
- 1:19:35The curve is low inside. Ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:19:42Certainly my feet feel like the temperature is about zero on this cold floor up in the radio booth.
- 1:19:50Two balls, no strikes on Gary Geiger. The fastball is strike one call, catches the outside corner.
- 1:19:56Andy Carey playing in at third. Geiger can go down that line. He's a left-hand batter with lots of speed.
- 1:20:04Richardson's in a couple of steps at short. There's a ball hit back to the box and one hot Turley gloves it. Flips the Throneberry one away.
- 1:20:14One run and the batter will be turned, rather, Sammy White.
- 1:20:21Sammy White, who popped too short in the third inning.
- 1:20:27Tom Brewer is on deck.
- 1:20:37Bob Turley, who has retired 15 Red Sox hitters in a row since Budden led off with a walk.
- 1:20:43The pitch to White is hit in the air to left center field. Seabird moving over, plenty of room under this one.
- 1:20:50And makes the catch for out number two. Two away.
- 1:21:01And the batter will be Tom Brewer, who popped too short in the third inning.
- 1:21:06Don't forget, fans, the first Reindard game of this series, which was last Friday, will be replayed May the 27th.
- 1:21:13That's a Wednesday afternoon when the Yankees will meet the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:21:18The other day it has not been decided as yet. Just when it will be played.
- 1:21:23Remember, the Yankees lost the first two games of this three game series.
- 1:21:28Tom Brewer, right hand batter, chokes up on the bat just a little bit.
- 1:21:32Two away, no one on. The Yankees lead two to nothing. There's a curve ball down the middle. Strike one call.
- 1:21:38Bob Turley, who looks just as sharp as he did all last year and during the World Series against Milwaukee,
- 1:21:45sends another curve. This one is low, ball one, one on one.
- 1:21:51Don Budden on deck.
- 1:22:02Turley's next pitch is a curve that swung out a missed strike two. One ball, two strikes to count.
- 1:22:23The curve is hit.
- 1:22:25Fair down the third base line, carries up with it, throws off balance to first. Inside for the out and a beautiful play by Andy Carey.
- 1:22:33Oh man, that was a dandy on what looked like a ball that might go foul on a slow curve ball.
- 1:22:41It was hit slowly to third. Carey picked it up. Just fair and off balance.
- 1:22:46Side armed at the Throneberry who stretched and made a shoestring catch just nipping Tom Brewer for out number three.
- 1:22:56For the Red Sox, in the top of the sixth, no runs, no hits, no Yankees. There is no one left.
- 1:23:01Score at the end of five and a half. Innings of play. The Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:23:11Well here in the bottom of the sixth with the Yankees leading two to nothing, Mickey Mantle who lie in the center and was thrown out on an attempted bunt is the batter.
- 1:23:21And Mickey's next homerun will be his 250th homer, leaving him 11th among active major leaguers.
- 1:23:29Ted Williams is tops among active with a 482 at the beginning of his 59th season.
- 1:23:35Fastball catches the inside corner, strike one, one, one.
- 1:23:44Mickey Mantle batting left handed against Tom Brewer looking for his first base hit of the 59th season on deck Yogi Berra with Gil McDougal to follow.
- 1:23:52There's a curve foul back out of play.
- 1:23:56Hit into the press box, back of home plate. One ball, two strikes on Mickey.
- 1:24:09Tom Brewer out on the mound for the Red Sox.
- 1:24:13So right handed, checks the sign from Sammy White.
- 1:24:17Big hole in left center for Mickey.
- 1:24:20Jackie Jensen playing deep and right.
- 1:24:23The pitch is high inside.
- 1:24:28Brewer's fastball, which you have to wait on, and the umpire does too because it comes back and away from a left hand batter.
- 1:24:37Two and two to count on Mickey.
- 1:24:45Brewer takes time out, takes the handkerchief out and rubs his hand.
- 1:24:52Wipes his nose a little bit in this cold weather.
- 1:24:55Those noses do tend to run a little.
- 1:24:58Here's a two-two pick.
- 1:25:00Fastball hit on the ground at second base.
- 1:25:02Runnels knocks it down.
- 1:25:03Pitch it up, throws it great.
- 1:25:04Justin trying to get Mantle and it's one away.
- 1:25:07A hard hit to Hopper to Pete Runnels as that feet knocked down.
- 1:25:11It bounced in front of him and he picked it up and just did get Mantle who can go down that line, one away.
- 1:25:17Here's Yogi Berra who's single to center in the first inning.
- 1:25:21Scored a run in the second run of the ballgame and then popped to center field.
- 1:25:26One for two for Yogi.
- 1:25:29Yankees leading two to nothing.
- 1:25:37Blue already.
- 1:25:38The curveball is outside ball one as Yogi faked a bunt.
- 1:25:46It's so cold I can't get my mouth to say what I wanted to say.
- 1:25:54The pitch to Yogi is high, ball two.
- 1:26:02Tom Brewer out on the mound for the Red Sox to settle down and since Seabruns singled in the second inning,
- 1:26:07the Yankees have not had a base hit or a base runner.
- 1:26:15There's a curve outside ball three, three and nothing.
- 1:26:27New scoreboard having a little bit of trouble.
- 1:26:29There it is now three and nothing.
- 1:26:31I tell you with all those buttons out there, they're bound to have trouble.
- 1:26:39The pitch to Yogi is in there, strike one, call.
- 1:26:44They call it the new Miracle $300,000 scoreboard.
- 1:26:57Here's a three-one pitch to Yogi.
- 1:26:59Changeup is popped in the air to short right.
- 1:27:01Runnels back, Jensen coming in.
- 1:27:02Runnels slips, now he's up and makes the catch for out number two.
- 1:27:10The outfield is still a little damp and a little soft from all the rain and Runnels in going back for that high pop of Yogi Bearers,
- 1:27:20who by the way was thrown off balance as Yogi looking for the fastball had a change of pace thrown up to him.
- 1:27:26It was way out in front, popped at the short right, two-way.
- 1:27:29Here's Gil McDougal who singled the right and was called out on strike.
- 1:27:32Gil takes the fastball over, strike one, call.
- 1:27:39Beautiful exhibition of pitching by both Tom Brewer on the mound for the Red Sox and Bob Shirley for the Yankees.
- 1:27:49Brewer's next pitch is a curve that's in there, strike two, call.
- 1:27:53Talking with Kurt Gowdy, the Red Sox play-by-play announcer,
- 1:27:59wondering how the Yankees always manage to give Brewer such a rough time with the tremendous curve and fastball he had.
- 1:28:07The two-strike pitch hit on the ground a third, Malzone up with it.
- 1:28:11Over to first and that's all as Wirtz has to catch it and peg McDougal.
- 1:28:16Malzone's throw again pulling Wirtz off the bag.
- 1:28:19For the Yankees in the bottom of the sixth, no runs, no hits, no Red Sox, there is no one left.
- 1:28:25And the score at the end of sixth full inning, the Yankees two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:28:33You know a beer's got to have two things to really refresh it, lightness and flavor.
- 1:28:38Welcher Valentine beer's got them both.
- 1:28:41It's the crisp kind of light with true lager flavor.
- 1:28:45That's what makes it the crisp refresher.
- 1:28:48Enjoy your frosty glass of Valentine soon.
- 1:28:56Real quick look at the scoreboard.
- 1:28:57Cleveland at Kansas City postponed because of rain, Baltimore at Washington in the doubleheader postponed because of rain.
- 1:29:03The White Sox lead the Tigers 4-3 at the end of 6-1 half.
- 1:29:07Cash and Yosef home it in that game, Donovan against Lary.
- 1:29:11In the National League, Cincinnati at Philadelphia, a doubleheader postponed because of rain.
- 1:29:18The score was nothing, nothing at the end of two in the first game.
- 1:29:21Dodgers are trailing the Cubs 3-2 at the end of 3-1 half.
- 1:29:25And the Cardinals lead San Francisco 3-0 at the end of two.
- 1:29:29And now as we get ready to go in the top of the seventh inning, here's Mill Allen at table.
- 1:29:36Hello there everybody.
- 1:29:39First half of the seventh inning, 2-0 New York.
- 1:29:42Top of the Red Sox order, Don Button, Pete Reynolds and Gene Stevens to follow.
- 1:29:49The first pitch is high for a ball.
- 1:29:53Button drew a pass and grounded the first.
- 1:29:58Bob Turley gets his sign.
- 1:30:00Here's the pitch.
- 1:30:02Low inside for ball two.
- 1:30:04Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:30:19Turley all set to work.
- 1:30:21And the 2-0 pitch in there, strike one, two and one.
- 1:30:34Two balls, one strike on Don Button.
- 1:30:37The next delivery in there, strike two, 2-2.
- 1:30:43And despite the cold, the crowd is warming with each pitch.
- 1:30:48As Brewer and Turley have locked horns in this opening day, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:31:02Turley delivers to Don Button, curve outside, ball three, 3-2.
- 1:31:08Full count.
- 1:31:19Here's the 3-2 pitch, swung on and fouled back out of play.
- 1:31:33Count remains 3-2 on Button.
- 1:31:42Jack Burns walking up and down the third base coach's box, lapping his hands together.
- 1:31:47Del Baker the same at first base.
- 1:31:50Bob Turley takes a deep breath, gets the sign.
- 1:31:53Here's the pitch, swung on, lined down the left field line, and it is a foul ball.
- 1:32:02And the count remains 3-2.
- 1:32:06Don Button teed off on a 3-2 pitch, pulled it too much down the left field line.
- 1:32:13The count remains 3-2.
- 1:32:20Mike Higgins over in the corner to the dugout, tugging at his cap.
- 1:32:27Bob Turley all set, and the 3-2 pitch again is outside for ball four.
- 1:32:34And Don Button, who drooled past to start the game, becomes the first Red Sox base runner since then.
- 1:32:43In between, Turley retired 17 men in a row, including Reynolds, who hit into a double play in the first inning.
- 1:33:00Pete, a left-hand batter, steps in.
- 1:33:02Gene Stevens on deck, 2-0, New York 7th inning.
- 1:33:05Turley to the stretch. Button with the leadoff first.
- 1:33:09And the pitch to Reynolds, inside, low, ball one.
- 1:33:13One ball, no strikes.
- 1:33:21The Runnels grounded the second in the first inning into a double play and grounded the short in the fourth inning.
- 1:33:26Hits the ball to all fields. Button leading away from first.
- 1:33:30Bob Turley to the stretch. Here's the pitch, and it's inside, ball two, 2-0.
- 1:33:36And there's some action on the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:33:42Turley, up to now, has been masterful.
- 1:33:55Two balls, no strikes on Reynolds.
- 1:34:01Bob again to the stretch, check the button.
- 1:34:05And the pitch to Pete, swung on, and Luke down the left field line, and it is in there for a base hit.
- 1:34:12And twists into the stands for a ground rule double, and that's the first hit off Turley.
- 1:34:18A slice double to left.
- 1:34:21And the Red Sox suddenly now have a tying runs and scoring position.
- 1:34:26Bob Turley, who had a potential no-hitter going, gives up a base hit to Pete Runnels here in the seventh inning,
- 1:34:35as he sliced a looping fly ball down the left field line that landed about a foot fair,
- 1:34:41and twisted into the stands for a ground rule double.
- 1:34:45And so, the pressure cooker, in which Turley found himself, no hit-wise, is gone.
- 1:34:54And the pressure cooker is still there game-wise.
- 1:35:00As Gene Stevens, a left-hand hitter, steps in, grounded to second, fly into right center.
- 1:35:06Brick works on Beck and Jackie Johnson to follow.
- 1:35:08The meter of the order up, button leading off third, Runnels off second.
- 1:35:14Nobody out.
- 1:35:15Two to nothing, New York seventh inning.
- 1:35:17The pitch, it's low outside, ball one.
- 1:35:23Bob Feller is the only pitcher ever to pitch a no-hitter on an opening day.
- 1:35:30He did that against the White Sox, April 16, 1940.
- 1:35:39One ball, no strikes.

- 2:12:59sliced the double to left for the only hit off Charlie, sending Budden who had walked
- 2:13:04to third and two runs scored on an infield out and a sacrifice fly.
- 2:13:15Dean Stevens to follow, Kerry moves in close at third, Charlie's pitch outside ball one.
- 2:13:38Next delivery is low ball two, two and nothing.
- 2:13:54Here's the pitch over strike one, two and one.
- 2:14:07Banks three, Red Sox two, ninth inning.
- 2:14:14The two one pitch high, ball three, three and one.
- 2:14:30Charlie's three one pitch, inside for ball four, Pete Ronalds walks, fourth pass issued
- 2:14:37by Charlie and out of the plate strides Dean Stevens with Rick Wurtz on deck.
- 2:14:54One on and one out.
- 2:15:16Early end of the stretch and the pitch, inside ball one.
- 2:15:43Dean blowing very briskly out the right, Ronalds leading off first.
- 2:15:51Charlie pitches and Stevens swings and lines it foul down the right field line, strike
- 2:15:56one, one and one.
- 2:15:58Think he broke his bat, he hit it off the end, goes over to get a new one.
- 2:16:15One ball one strike, Stevens gets the batter's rosin bag, Ronalds hopping up and down in
- 2:16:25first base to keep warm, a wicked wind is whipped up out here.
- 2:16:44One ball one strike, one out, one on.
- 2:16:49Charlie delivers curve ball inside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:17:13Here's the two one pitch now, Dean Stevens, swung on, hit foul down the first base line,
- 2:17:18strike two, two, two.
- 2:17:23Ronalds retreats to first.
- 2:17:29Charlie blows on his pitching hand, temperature has really dropped out here.
- 2:17:41Bob into the stretch, Ronalds leads off first and the pitch, swung on, drive in the right
- 2:17:46center field, Mantle racing hard, makes the catch.
- 2:17:49Here's a throw to first base and it's caught and dropped and Ronalds gets back safely.
- 2:17:58Mickey Mantle raced in the right center to take the line drive, it looked as if it might
- 2:18:03be in there for extra bases, fired the ball into first base, Throneberry came off the
- 2:18:09bag, Bobbled the relay and Ronalds got back safely.
- 2:18:13And so the Red Sox are still alive, fine running catch by Mantle.
- 2:18:19Two down and the batter is Vic Wirtz.
- 2:18:28Wirtz took a third strike, gets to the box and walks.
- 2:18:45Yanks three, Red Sox two, ninth inning.
- 2:18:50Charlie to the stretch and the pitch.
- 2:18:55Inside ball one.
- 2:18:57Jackie Johnson on deck.
- 2:19:04Charlie all set.
- 2:19:13Here's the pitch, swung on, there's a fly ball into short right center, Mantle racing
- 2:19:18hard, can't get it, the base hit.
- 2:19:21Ronalds rounds second, heads on into third and that brings up Jackie Johnson.
- 2:19:29Vic Wirtz gets the second hit off Charlie.
- 2:19:36And the Red Sox still alive in the ninth inning.
- 2:19:39We're going to have a runner for Wirtz.
- 2:19:50Marty Keough will run for Wirtz, or rather Jim Busby.
- 2:19:56Busby running for Wirtz.
- 2:20:05Jackie Johnson took a third strike, fly to right, hit a sacrifice fly to left.
- 2:20:11Frank Malzone on deck.
- 2:20:14Gates Ronalds on third, Jim Busby on first.
- 2:20:21Charlie to the stretch.
- 2:20:22The pitch to Johnson, low outside, ball one.
- 2:20:43A walk and a hit, the foot runner is on first and third here in the ninth inning.
- 2:20:50Charlie under his stretch.
- 2:20:53Here's the pitch, swung on, a ground ball hit out to Richardson, throws to second for
- 2:20:58the fourth out on Busby and the ball game is over.
- 2:21:02And the Yankees win it three to two as Bob Curley pitched the two hitter.
- 2:21:09And the Yankees nose out the Red Sox three to two.
- 2:21:14No runs, one hit, no errors and two men left on.
- 2:21:20And the Yanks and Red Sox after being delayed for two days finally get the opener into the
- 2:21:26record book and an exciting ball game all the way.
- 2:21:31Hope you enjoy some Valentine beer as we go off the air.
- 2:21:35The crisp for pressure.
- 2:21:38Valentine's smooth and delicious flavor is something you really enjoy.
- 2:21:43Valentine's the largest selling beer in the East.
- 2:21:47The totals, the Yankees three runs, eight hits, no errors and four men left on.
- 2:21:56The Red Sox two runs, two hits, no errors and three men left on.
- 2:22:03Bob Curley all the way to win it.
- 2:22:10Tom Brewer all the way to be charged with a loss.
- 2:22:14Curley once pitched a one hitter on April 26, 1958.
- 2:22:21Today he pitched a two hitter.
- 2:22:24He had a no hitter going into the seventh inning.
- 2:22:28For those who tuned in late, the Yankees jumped on Brewer in the first inning.
- 2:22:34Seaborn singled with one out and after Mandel had lined out the center, Barra singled.
- 2:22:44McDougal singled to score Seaborn and Throneberry singled to score Barra.
- 2:22:50And the Yankees led two to nothing until the seventh inning.
- 2:22:55Only one man had reached base on Curley, Budden, who opened the game of the walk and was erased
- 2:22:59in a double play immediately.
- 2:23:01And after having retired 17 in a row, Budden walked again on the seventh.
- 2:23:05Runnels slashed a double to the left, sending Budden to third.
- 2:23:09Budden scored on Stevens in field out.
- 2:23:12Runnels moving to third and scoring on Jensen sacrificed fly to left.
- 2:23:16And then in the eighth inning with one out, Norm Seaborn hits the first home run.
- 2:23:22AeroBots into the bleachers.
- 2:23:27Mickey Mandel almost followed suit with Jensen leaning over the barrier into the Yankee bullpen
- 2:23:32to take his drive.
- 2:23:35And then Curley stopped the Red Sox uprising in the ninth.
- 2:23:41Runnels with one out walked, went to third on Vic Wards two out singled and Busby running
- 2:23:46for Wards was forced at second, Richardson to a McDougal.
