- 0:01Nobody is waiting for your review.
- 0:03They're waiting for your recommendation.
- 0:06There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:09Chad #1176 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:13yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:16you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:18This message is dedicated to Karen O Barbonell, a really good
- 0:20recommender. You can get a free copy of my
- 0:23book, The Most Powerful Story in the World by going to from
- 0:26chad.gumroad.com. Why is it free?
- 0:30If you haven't figured it out already, I'm a super nice guy.
- 0:33But the other reason is I want to help people think better, and
- 0:35it's a tool that does just that. The transcript of this message
- 0:39and hundreds of others are always available at
- 0:40www.fromchat.com. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:45You may think you have nothing new to give anybody, but
- 0:47upgraded thinking knows the best thing you've already found is
- 0:50the best thing you have to hand off.
- 0:52Here's the story. On Monday, Wendell Berry died at
- 0:57his home in Port Royal, KY. He was 92.
- 1:00Novelist, poet, essayist, farmer.
- 1:03I did a message on him a while back.
- 1:05It's #675 today I'm doing one more, because the best way I
- 1:09know to honor a writer is to recommend him.
- 1:13In the summer of 2011, I finished a novel called Hannah
- 1:15Coulter, inserted the next one. On the same day, I wrote a
- 1:19little post called on a Wendell Berry kick.
- 1:22I said I was hooked, and I've been hooked for 15 years.
- 1:25If you've never read the Port William novels, I'm recommending
- 1:29them again today. Barry built a small cabin above
- 1:32the Kentucky River in 1963 out of reclaimed family timber.
- 1:36No plumbing, no electricity. He wrote more than 50 books at a
- 1:40work table in that cabin, facing the woods and the river with a
- 1:44pencil. He didn't have to live that way.
- 1:47He had early success, a Guggenheim year in Europe, a
- 1:50teaching job at NYU. In the mid 60s.
- 1:53He walked away from all of it, went home to Henry County,
- 1:55Kentucky, bought a farm with his wife, Tanya, and worked it with
- 1:59horses. His New York colleagues called
- 2:01it intellectual suicide. He said he was born for with an
- 2:05aptitude for a way of life that was already doomed.
- 2:08Then he spent 60 years telling the story of 1 Little town.
- 2:13Port William doesn't exist, but Berry's stories about it run
- 2:17from 1864 all the way to 2025, a span of 160 years.
- 2:23One small community, farming, family loss, and the people who
- 2:29stayed. He called them the membership.
- 2:32When Dorothy Wicken visited him for The New Yorker a few years
- 2:35ago, she asked about hope. Here's what he said.
- 2:38Do write things today. Don't speculate about tomorrow.
- 2:42Wickeden wrote that from that sliver of vanishing America,
- 2:45Barry cultivated the unfashionable virtues of
- 2:48neighborliness and compassion. That's what a recommendation is,
- 2:52a small neighborly act you can do today.
- 2:55Barry didn't fix American agriculture.
- 2:58He wrote about one county. He didn't save every farm.
- 3:03He worked one. And that one farm and that one
- 3:07made-up town have been handed from one reader to the next for
- 3:10half a century. Somebody handed a book to
- 3:13Michael Poland, Somebody handed one to Alice Waters, Somebody
- 3:17handed one to me, and now I'm handing it to you.
- 3:21Here's what a recommendation says.
- 3:23I found this. It was good for me.
- 3:25I think it'll be good for you. That's it.
- 3:28You don't have to be an expert. You don't have to be a person
- 3:31who found something and didn't keep it to yourself.
- 3:33You already have one, a book, a song, a person.
- 3:38Somebody near you needs it and doesn't know it exists.
- 3:42You are the whole supply chain. The better story to tell
- 3:47yourself is somebody needs what I've already found.
- 3:50Don't wait until you find something better.
- 3:53Hand off the thing you've got. Go recommend something today
- 3:57like I'm doing with Barry. Tell me a story of the best
- 4:00recommendation anyone ever gave you at from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 4:06Send someone a text and tell them you need to read this.
- 4:09Here's why and then tell them why.
