- 0:00Listen, is it awkward to have you ever thought of like kicking people out
- 0:04of the band. So interviews, there weren't so many of you guys.
- 0:07We already did that one guy. Yeah, what's gone was the answers.
- 0:13So listen, I've been in an interview with y' all. I know that
- 0:17is bullshit. I got to start by Obviously, we keep up with what
- 0:23you guys are up to with the bar and with your music. But every
- 0:27now and again I will google an artists right before I'm gonna talk to him.
- 0:30Case like, something spicy popped up, and as I type Old Dominion,
- 0:35obviously I get the trucking line first. But you know, one of
- 0:38the most googled Old Dominion things is Matthew Ramsey's height. Wow, he's actually
- 0:47it's nuts. It's funny. Actually, people don't realize he's he's actually about
- 0:53three five. Yeah, you got you put him on your lap. You're
- 0:56like, I want to start. We were lucky enough to hear the song
- 1:02early, but I want to rewind a week here. How was CMA Beest
- 1:07for you guys? It was great? Yeah, yeah, it was awesome.
- 1:11Yeah. It's always good to be part of is it knowing that like
- 1:15in the planning of things, because obviously you are on the road pretty NonStop,
- 1:21especially this time of year. Is CMA best something that you plan for
- 1:23as you're laying out the year, It usually is, so you know,
- 1:27we sort of look at the calendar and as they're planning the whole thing,
- 1:32and we always know it's around that time, so we try not to,
- 1:36you know, step on that. Sometimes tours get in the way, but
- 1:38yeah, we try to account for it well. And speaking of tours,
- 1:42we caught up with you guys. I think it was probably close to two
- 1:47years ago and you were on Kenny's tour and you guys were were on his
- 1:52tour so much that I think he got to claim you as dependence on taxas
- 1:57what when Kenny had an announced the tour and you guys weren't on it,
- 2:01is that like did he give you a buffer? Like, hey, just
- 2:05the heads up? Yeah, we knew, okay, I just wanted to
- 2:08make sure that there wasn't like a post on social media. You're like,
- 2:10uh, the hell no, I think it's funny. You know, we
- 2:14have such a good relationship obviously with him and the whole team, and it
- 2:17was we were luckily part of that discussion, you know, because we're working
- 2:23on our own stuff, and you know, it's it's such a like complicated
- 2:28equation to put together tours and there's radius, clauses and all that stuff you
- 2:31got to look out for. So we were a part of the conversation with
- 2:36them and as to whether or not we were going to be a part of
- 2:38it. So yeah, they didn't just surprise, you're not invited anymore like
- 2:44we didn't like Kenny anyway. Yeah, kept making kept going on last year.
- 2:51When it comes to the Nashville bar scene, it's exploded, especially post
- 2:55COVID. I mean, Lady Wilson took over the spot over here, mirandas
- 3:00Is behind us were sitting in Jason's Bar. Why did you guys pick the
- 3:04spot where you're at because for anybody listening, you're in Nashville, but you're
- 3:09in more like a local focused part of Nashville. Yeah, it's right near
- 3:15Music Row, you know, it's it's really the spot in Nashville that we
- 3:19spent a lot of time not only playing music but also hanging out. So
- 3:23it's a it's a really cool spot. It's not too far from Broadway,
- 3:27but it's it's a little bit away from the madness, and it's and it's
- 3:30near such a historic spot. You know, we started as songwriters and so
- 3:34it's it's right at the end of music row. I think actually the first
- 3:37conversation we had about it was after like a sound check I think at CMA
- 3:42Fest last year. Yeah, at least two. It might have been.
- 3:47Yeah, we were in we were in a car. We all crammed and
- 3:52Trevor's carr and got on a conference call to to talk about it. So
- 3:54it's been in the works for quite a while. And why I mean,
- 3:59I get it took we saw you at the iHeart Country Festival. And don't
- 4:02judge my intelligence after I say this, but it took me saying the name
- 4:08of the bar you to realize ODIs Yeah, well that's perfect. That's what
- 4:13we wanted. We didn't want it to be like Old Dominion. We didn't
- 4:16want our name to be you know, it's not a tourist attraction necessarily,
- 4:20it's not a museum or shrine to us. We wanted to make a cool
- 4:24bar, but we wanted to like inject our vibe and our feelings into it
- 4:29and nod a little to us. So that was a way to sort of
- 4:32hide our name in the name, so and all due respect to the legend
- 4:39that was Toby Keith with his bar, it almost became like he put his
- 4:43name on it and they kind of ran with what they wanted to do.
- 4:46How hands on were you with not only the design but how things were going
- 4:50to look and feel inside. We're very hands on. The guy that we're
- 4:55doing it with, Ty Howder, he's done a lot of bars, some
- 4:58of which we've played in, and so he has a lot of experience making
- 5:01them. But from day one we kind of all said, like, we
- 5:04don't want this is to be something we license our name to. We want
- 5:08to be you know, he wanted our input from the ground up, so
- 5:11we've we're still in that in that process. But yeah, we're very hands
- 5:14on. And I heard that if you drop a band member's name at the
- 5:18bar, there's like a running tab where like your first no, don't,
- 5:27I'm getting to the music in a second. One more thing about the bar
- 5:29is you're probably gonna stay involved. Right, It's not like okay, it's
- 5:34up, it's running back to the music and you know, we'll just let
- 5:39the mailbox money pop in like this is going to be a part of you
- 5:41guys, right, absolutely, yeah. I mean we're already talking about and
- 5:46making moves about what's next. So we have plans beyond what this this first
- 5:53phase is, So it's going to be an ongoing thing for us. Dang.
- 5:57So there's a second bar coming soon to Chicago with I'm just making up
- 6:02rumors to touch on. We got to hear this new song early coming home.
- 6:09You guys do a phenomenal job. And I say this every time I
- 6:12had the chance to catch up with you. You are great at putting out
- 6:15an Old Dominion song that doesn't sound like the last Old Dominion song, if
- 6:17that makes sense, right? Yeah, how did you know and what was
- 6:21the creation process behind this song? How did you know that this would kind
- 6:25of fit what what Old Dominion is known for. I don't know we thought
- 6:29about I don't think we ever think about what I mean, you know,
- 6:33we don't think too far ahead. We literally wrote that song in the studio,
- 6:38uh, and we kind of actually rushed through the end of it because
- 6:42we had to record it. So we were like, all right, we
- 6:44got to finish the lyrics in like the next forty five minutes. So you
- 6:48know, we worked real hard on it, and it just I think it
- 6:50just comes out because we're we have so many different influences that you know,
- 6:56we can kind of for like a chameleon, the old Dominion chameleon. You
- 7:00know. So you said you wrote it in the studio. Is this the
- 7:04fastest song that you guys have been able to put together that kind of fell
- 7:08into place? Well, we've had a little bit of a history of that,
- 7:11you know, make it sweet. We wrote in the studio and recorded
- 7:14that day, and then you know, in our fourth album, every day,
- 7:17every song was a song that we wrote in the morning and then recorded
- 7:21that night. So we do have a history of being able to do that,
- 7:25and it adds a freshness to it when you just it's fresh off the
- 7:30press writing it and you walk right into the studio, it's just every aspect
- 7:34of the song is fresh in your mind. You guys have worked together for
- 7:39so long that you probably kind of know where each other are going mentally when
- 7:42it comes to writing, right, But let's say you're in the studio and
- 7:46an idea pops up and you create it like that. For a lack of
- 7:48a better phrase, what's a song that fell together that way that you literally
- 7:53got in the car to drive home and thought, holy shit, yeah,
- 7:58I mean, I think make it swee. Actually we would probably be the
- 8:01one for me that we kind of it was our first, like Trevor was
- 8:05saying, it was our first really attempt at just writing and recording in the
- 8:09same day. And it felt so good. You know. Even in the
- 8:15writing of it, we were just like, yeah, go keep going,
- 8:16let's keep going. It was like pushing each other to go. And then
- 8:20you know, you're listening in the control room at the end of the day
- 8:22going did we just really do this? We just really write our next single?
- 8:28This is crazy how fast that happened. If you think about it too
- 8:31much, it can be a little scary when a song falls together that quick.
- 8:35How do you determine Because music is consumed faster than ever. I mean,
- 8:41as soon as someone's in love with something, you better have two more
- 8:43songs ready to go, right, So when a song like that comes out,
- 8:46like obviously coming Home, we know it's a song we're getting. We
- 8:48know it's a song country radio, it's gonna turn up all summer. But
- 8:54what's the plan after that? Is this? Was this just a one off
- 8:58or is the plan to put it with with grouping of songs, EP or
- 9:01album. There is a plan. I'm not so sure how much we're allowed
- 9:05to talk about it, but there is more coming for sure, and we're
- 9:07continually working on even what's next after that. So it's kind of a twofold
- 9:15thing that we got going on. Speaking of what's next, is there any
- 9:20bar owner inspired songs coming? Oh, you know, it's been a it's
- 9:26been such a slow process and it's the really the unromantic part of it right
- 9:31now. So probably not because it's like unless you want to talk about,
- 9:33you know, digging up new sewer lines in the city of Nashville, and
- 9:37it's you know, it's really nothing aroundthroom code code violations. You know,
- 9:46it's not a great rock You could write a song about fighting in your bar
- 9:50and call it take it to Tin Roof. When when it comes to the
- 9:58music and and the touring and obviously the bar the bar portion of your guys
- 10:03career, Now, what are the most surprising aspects like that you sit back
- 10:07and go, dude, we were just writing songs one day. I mean,
- 10:13the bar definitely was one of those I feel like it's just it's almost
- 10:16like the whole time, it's felt a little bit too good to be true.
- 10:18Like Tie was such a great dude, and and it's just been so
- 10:22easy working with him. And you know, he's really kind of as much
- 10:26as we're in putting it, you know, into the feel of it.
- 10:30You know, he's definitely sort of he's he's driving the carriage or horse bus,
- 10:39driving the bush. And it's just been so great every time. And
- 10:43yeah, and it's it's just I never would have thought that that we that
- 10:48we'd be looking at a you know, almost built building in Midtown that's going
- 10:52to have our name on it. Yeah, it's like kind of that and
- 10:54everything. It's you know, playing c Mayfest in the stadium, and it's
- 10:58like it is kind of like one of the things you look up and go
- 11:01if a bar or headline in this and you know, and uh, it's
- 11:05just one of you know, it makes you stop and go, Wow,
- 11:09we've really done it. Because with the bar is across the street from a
- 11:11bar that's no longer there that we used to play for free. We would
- 11:15ask the guy if we could sound, we could play just so we could
- 11:18rehearse. So it's we've come a long way. And that bar merg looks
- 11:22awesome. I put this hat on real quick. Oh wait, they're available
- 11:33listen and you'all got bills of pace, so let me know. Last thing
- 11:37I want to ask is you have the opportunity to celebrate your music all the
- 11:41time. You meet fans, you do these radio interviews, and it's all
- 11:43like, this song is great, you guys are great, you did this.
- 11:46I'm gonna ask you to call yourselves out at one point. There has
- 11:50to be a line in a song that you're like, I can't believe we
- 11:52put this in here and it worked, and it's a line that you still
- 11:56are not a fan of, but it's it's there now. I don't know
- 12:00if it's not a fan of. But I can't believe we put drunkens and
- 12:03skunking lunch with a crosside bear. I can't believe that that made it into
- 12:07a song. And like, that's an insane, stupid line that we put
- 12:13in there and made ourselves laugh with and I absolutely love it. But it's
- 12:18pretty crazy that that's us. That's an actual song lyric. Hey, we
- 12:24are excited for you guys for the new song whatever is after that song,
- 12:26and we will be in line for the grand opening of the spot in Midtown.
- 12:30Man, I'm excited for you. Yeah, thank you, Take care,
- 12:33We'll see all later.
