Latest / Loud & Lifted / Quick Lift: The PIE Formula: Why Performance Alone Won’t Get You Promoted
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Loud and Lifted. I'm your host, Betsy
- 0:02Hamm. In this quick lift, we revisit my conversation
- 0:05with Linda Strange, my former business coach,
- 0:07to unpack how to master your pie. Performance,
- 0:11image, and exposure. Three ingredients that determine
- 0:14your career success. And I'm willing to bet you
- 0:16aren't as intentional about them as you should
- 0:19be. So let's dig in. Number one, performance
- 0:30is your foundation. You have to be great at what
- 0:33you do. It's the foundation before anything else
- 0:35matters that we're going to talk about. But here's
- 0:38the trap. Performance alone won't get you to
- 0:40the next level. Many women think if I just keep
- 0:42delivering, I'll get noticed. And that's not
- 0:45true. I've seen this happen time and time again
- 0:47with women in my career, especially younger women.
- 0:49They come into an organization and they put their
- 0:52head down and they grind it out and they're working
- 0:54crazy hours and accomplishing a lot, but nobody
- 0:58knows what they're doing. So performance is important.
- 1:01And like I said, that's really the foundation.
- 1:03It's table stakes. Nothing else matters if you're
- 1:05not good at what you do, but There's more to
- 1:08the pie that we have to dig into. So action item
- 1:10here, though, is to evaluate your performance.
- 1:13I'm sure many of you receive performance reviews
- 1:15on the regular or feedback from your manager.
- 1:17But if not, ask for feedback. Ask for feedback
- 1:20on your strengths and improvement areas. Don't
- 1:22guess and then identify one skill gap that you
- 1:25can close in the next 90 days. Number two. Image
- 1:29is your brand. It's how others perceive you.
- 1:32Now, what's included in image? It's your appearance,
- 1:35of course, but it's also your communication style,
- 1:38your professionalism, and your presence. This
- 1:41affects more opportunities than you think. And
- 1:44here's the truth, your image is already being
- 1:46crafted in people's minds. If you're not shaping
- 1:49it intentionally, Someone else's this really
- 1:52ties into what we talked about with Jill to with
- 1:54executive presence. It's how you show up It's
- 1:56how you're in the room. It's what people say
- 1:59about you when you leave the room How do people
- 2:02describe you are you described as somebody who
- 2:04is? Collaborative and optimistic and a problem
- 2:07solver and a team player or do you leave the
- 2:11room and people are like, oh, thank you Goodness,
- 2:12she is such a pain in the ass. She's so negative.
- 2:15She's not collaborative. She's defensive. When
- 2:17you give feedback, you have to know what people
- 2:20are thinking and or saying about you when you're
- 2:23not in the room. And you need to be really thinking
- 2:26about this in different areas of how you're showing
- 2:29up on an online meeting. Do you have your camera
- 2:32on? Are you present? Are you engaged? As well
- 2:35as if you're in a conference room or you're in
- 2:37a team meeting, how are you showing up and what
- 2:39is your image that you're portraying when you're
- 2:41are in those situations. Action item here is
- 2:44ask people that you trust at work who you know
- 2:48will give you honest and real feedback. Don't
- 2:51ask somebody who's just going to say things to
- 2:52be nice, but ask your peers, your coworkers,
- 2:55maybe even your boss five words to describe you
- 2:58and then compare those words that they said to
- 3:01what you want to use. Linda gave a very good
- 3:04example of someone who did this, who had very
- 3:06positive words and it was things like being kind
- 3:09and nice and collaborative. Great words, right?
- 3:12We want people to say that about us, but the
- 3:14words that weren't used were words that she was
- 3:17striving to be because she wanted to be a leader
- 3:19or a manager and have people report to her. So
- 3:22that gave her really a path to focus on some
- 3:25of those other words that weren't showing up
- 3:27on her list. Now you may do this exercise and
- 3:30words that you don't want on your list. are there
- 3:32and then that's something that needs to be addressed.
- 3:35So sometimes they may be aspirational words that
- 3:37you want added to your list and sometimes you
- 3:40may get feedback of words that you don't want
- 3:41on your list and then you can work towards that.
- 3:44So that's your action item is get those five
- 3:46words from your co -workers. Number three exposure
- 3:50is your amplifier. It's not about shameless self
- 3:53-promotion. It's about making sure the right
- 3:55people know who you are, what you do and the
- 3:58value you bring. You can't wait for someone else
- 4:00to shine a light on you. It's too risky. I often
- 4:03say, does your boss know what you... But more
- 4:06importantly, does your boss's boss know what
- 4:08you do or somebody else above you in the organization?
- 4:12I loved Linda's example about the Broadway stage
- 4:15versus the community theater. So Broadway stage,
- 4:18her example was, you know, maybe there's a big
- 4:19corporate event. Maybe there's a town hall meeting
- 4:21where there's people who you don't typically
- 4:23run into or work with from a leadership perspective
- 4:26that you have exposure to. So take that opportunity
- 4:29to sit beside somebody new, to introduce yourself,
- 4:32to ask questions to someone that you're sitting
- 4:34beside. just set aside somebody new and then
- 4:36not engage with them. But make sure at those
- 4:38Broadway stage opportunities, you're getting
- 4:41outside your comfort zone and you're talking
- 4:43to people that would be important to help influence
- 4:46your network and your exposure. The other piece
- 4:49that she talked about was the community theater.
- 4:52And I love this because it's every day, right?
- 4:54You have the opportunity to get exposure every
- 4:57day. And it's sometimes in those smaller options.
- 4:59It could be in the lunchroom actually making
- 5:02conversation with a vice president that you don't
- 5:05really have any reason to work with, but letting
- 5:07them know who you are and that you exist. Those
- 5:10little conversations and giving yourself exposure
- 5:12to people even in a social setting really go
- 5:15a long way. The other piece of exposure is LinkedIn.
- 5:19Again, another great not only networking opportunity,
- 5:22but an opportunity to promote yourself, what
- 5:25you're working on, what's going on, or maybe
- 5:27even your company if that's more comfortable
- 5:29to start off with. There's a lot of opportunity
- 5:31for exposure. probably every day, no matter what
- 5:34your work environment is, but think about how
- 5:36you can be more intentional with your exposure.
- 5:39Action item for exposure is identify three people
- 5:43either in your organization or in your industry
- 5:46who need to know your work and then set a plan
- 5:48to connect. Again, reaching out via LinkedIn,
- 5:51reaching out via an email. I talked about when
- 5:54on Linda's episode how, you know, people within
- 5:57my company were very good sometimes about reaching
- 5:59out and it could have been sending an email about
- 6:01saying, Hey, thanks so much that the company
- 6:04is doing this or thanks for holding this event
- 6:06or whatever it is You don't have to start off
- 6:08with a big self -promotion elevator pitch Although
- 6:11you should be ready for elevator pitch that might
- 6:13have to be a conversation for another day, but
- 6:16It's being intentional about making those connections,
- 6:19networking relationships. Number four, you can
- 6:23fix your pie at any stage. If one slice is lagging,
- 6:27you can rebalance it. Now we talked about performance.
- 6:30Image, I will be honest, is probably the hardest
- 6:33slice to change dramatically if you feel like
- 6:36you're not headed in the right direction, but
- 6:38it's just taking baby steps. Maybe you need to
- 6:41address some items that need to be repaired.
- 6:43Maybe it's relationships. If it is something
- 6:45like you go, into meetings and you present and
- 6:47you get really defensive and now you have a bad
- 6:49reputation about that figure out how you can
- 6:51work on that what are those triggers sometimes
- 6:53a lot of those triggers can negatively affect
- 6:56our image so it's identifying those and again
- 6:58baby steps you're not going to be perfect every
- 7:01day breaking news none of us are so identify
- 7:04what you need to work on whether it's with your
- 7:06performance or your image and I'm sure your exposure
- 7:09needs some work and then make a plan to be intentional
- 7:13about addressing that I've said it before, and
- 7:15I'll say it again. Pi is one of the most important
- 7:18career lessons you can learn. I even talk about
- 7:21it to my own teens. They love it so much. But
- 7:24it matters everywhere. It matters at their age
- 7:26in school, and it matters in sports, and it definitely
- 7:29matters in your career. Success isn't just about
- 7:32doing excellent work. It's about making sure
- 7:34the right people see the work, know your value,
- 7:37and view you as someone worth investing in. So
- 7:40be intentional. Protect and grow your performance,
- 7:43image, and exposure. And when you do, your career
- 7:46will move in the direction you want it to go.
