- 6:30Speaker 1: the Rangers, have been part of the coaching staff since
- 6:33Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. Connor McDavid is staying with the Edmonton Oilers,
- 6:42Speaker 1: signed a two year contract extension averaging twelve and a

- 6:59Speaker 1: with an hour. He was set to become an unrestricted
- 7:03Speaker 1: free agent after the season. He's been eleven years. Good gosh,
- 7:09Speaker 1: that's hard to believe. He signed an eight year, one
- 7:12Speaker 1: hundred million dollar deal in July of twenty seventeen. McDavid
- 7:19Speaker 1: has three hundred and sixty one goals in seven hundred
- 7:23Speaker 1: and twelve games, has won five scoring titles, three Heart Trophies,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and became the second skater ever to win the Con

- 7:37Speaker 4: A losing effort.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Two years in a row the Oilers have lost in
- 7:44Speaker 1: the finals. There were all kinds of stories about what
- 7:48Speaker 1: would it cost to get Connor McDavid away from the Oilers.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It's not to say he's still untradable, but for now

- 15:02Speaker 1: top right now. Yes, I'm miss.
- 15:07Speaker 11: I don't remember why I missed, but aready done it?
- 15:11Speaker 1: At? This is a this is a lesson to all
- 15:13Speaker 1: our listeners outam. You can't miss a week. You've got
- 15:16Speaker 1: to do it every week. But hey, you are ten
- 15:19Speaker 1: and oh this week, which beat me.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Like a by like six picks. I was horrible.
- 15:24Speaker 1: But Adam, that's neither here nor there. I have two
- 15:28Speaker 1: tickets to the Renaissance Festival for you.
- 15:32Speaker 24: Uh.
- 15:33Speaker 1: And these aren't just any tickets. These are given to
- 15:36Speaker 1: me by the King of Renfest and by Ali. And
- 15:40Speaker 1: these tickets can be used either weekend day between this

- 17:21Speaker 1: but a lot of work. I'm tired already. Okay, let's
- 17:26Speaker 1: hear from coach elco So every Monday at one thirty
- 17:29Speaker 1: f game week, Coach ell Coo meets with the media
- 17:32Speaker 1: answers our questions.
- 17:33Speaker 4: He did today.
- 17:34Speaker 1: We're gonna play part of what he had to say,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and time permitting, we'll play the other part a.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Little later this week.
- 17:42Speaker 22: I just want to start by recognizing a big event
- 17:44Speaker 22: Wednesday night. We got the top ten women's volleyball game
- 17:47Speaker 22: going on over in Rid Arena. Congratulations to coach Morrison
- 17:51Speaker 22: and the start that the girls have gotten off to
- 17:53Speaker 22: and anybody who can get out and support them. They
- 17:56Speaker 22: got Kentucky coming into town. That'll be a great game
- 17:58Speaker 22: for them, and so we'll be watching we always do
- 18:01Speaker 22: with the radio show. It's kind of a radio show
- 18:02Speaker 22: ritual to watch the A and M women's volleyball game
- 18:04Speaker 22: on TV. But please get out to read it and
- 18:07Speaker 22: give them they give them some support. I want to
- 18:10Speaker 22: recognize the nineteen seventy five team. This is a throwback
- 18:13Speaker 22: jersey game for us, and we'll be recognizing the nineteen
- 18:17Speaker 22: seventy five team. They were the Southwest Conference champions. They
- 18:21Speaker 22: reached as high as number two in the polls that
- 18:23Speaker 22: year and produce ten NFL draft picks, which is still
- 18:27Speaker 22: the largest number in any given year.
- 18:29Speaker 7: For Texas A and M football.
- 18:31Speaker 22: And so it'd be great to get all of those
- 18:33Speaker 22: guys back, or as many of those guys as we
- 18:35Speaker 22: can back on campus. It's always great when we get
- 18:37Speaker 22: former teams back on campus as we kind of continue
- 18:41Speaker 22: to try to build this Aggi football family to be
- 18:44Speaker 22: an all inclusive thing. Looking back at the game the
- 18:47Speaker 22: other night, starting with our players of the game from
- 18:51Speaker 22: a scout team perspective this week, Offensively it was Josh Moses,
- 18:55Speaker 22: Defensively it was Dejon Peedaway, and on special teams it
- 18:58Speaker 22: was Johnny Ryder.
- 19:00Speaker 7: Our defensive Lineman of the week was cash As Hall.
- 19:03Speaker 22: He had three sacks and so again another very disruptive,
- 19:07Speaker 22: productive night for him getting after the quarterback.
- 19:11Speaker 7: Our offensive player of the week was Ruben Owens.
- 19:14Speaker 22: It was great to see him really kind of hit
- 19:16Speaker 22: his stride twenty one carries for one hundred and forty
- 19:19Speaker 22: two yards, really did a nice job consistently running the
- 19:23Speaker 22: football the way we would like to see him do it,
- 19:26Speaker 22: and obviously he has home run ability and so really
- 19:29Speaker 22: big night for him. The defensive Player of the Week
- 19:33Speaker 22: goes to Damian Sanford. Damien at nine tackles, two TFLs,
- 19:37Speaker 22: one sack, and one interception, and so when you talk
- 19:39Speaker 22: about filling a stat book, that's kind of what that
- 19:42Speaker 22: feels like. Damien was the co SEC Defensive Player of
- 19:46Speaker 22: the Week this week. Cassius was the SEC defensive lineman
- 19:49Speaker 22: in the Week of the Week this week, and so
- 19:51Speaker 22: it's nice to see our defensive kids get some recognition.
- 19:54Speaker 22: And then our Special Teams Player of the Week was
- 19:56Speaker 22: Casey Concepcion for continuing to do a really good job
- 20:00Speaker 22: back there returning punts and I think as we looked
- 20:02Speaker 22: at the game again, you know the iPads make it
- 20:05Speaker 22: a little bit easier because you have a little bit
- 20:06Speaker 22: clearer view when.
- 20:07Speaker 7: You come in after the game of what actually happened.
- 20:10Speaker 22: But you know, again, I think defensively, we played really
- 20:14Speaker 22: well start to finish, you know, I think we gave
- 20:16Speaker 22: them one drive early. I think outside of that, we
- 20:19Speaker 22: really did a good job of executing what we were
- 20:22Speaker 22: trying to get accomplished. Holding them to a field goal
- 20:25Speaker 22: on the one drive I thought was big. Also, that's
- 20:28Speaker 22: one of the things that we really emphasize when we
- 20:30Speaker 22: play those teams is trying to make sure that when
- 20:32Speaker 22: they do move the ball that you can limit them
- 20:34Speaker 22: to field goals. Our drive efficiency was ten out of twelve,
- 20:38Speaker 22: which is really obviously good.
- 20:40Speaker 7: For the evening.
- 20:41Speaker 22: Offensively, you know, it was interesting because we were efficient
- 20:45Speaker 22: driving the football nine out of twelve times. I think
- 20:48Speaker 22: the game changes a little bit because we don't convert
- 20:52Speaker 22: the fourth and one, which we come away from zero points,
- 20:54Speaker 22: and then we throw the interception in the first half
- 20:57Speaker 22: and we come away with zero points. I think those
- 20:59Speaker 22: two drives coming away empty obviously we're huge killers for
- 21:04Speaker 22: us in terms of trying to build some early momentum
- 21:07Speaker 22: from early points. I thought we came out in the
- 21:09Speaker 22: second half, got into a much better rhythm. We're able
- 21:12Speaker 22: to finish drives, finish drives with touchdowns, three straight drives
- 21:17Speaker 22: through the end of the third quarter into the fourth
- 21:18Speaker 22: where we're able to score, and that gave us a
- 21:21Speaker 22: chance to pull away and win that one, kind of
- 21:24Speaker 22: going away, and so it was a good night. It
- 21:26Speaker 22: was a good night for us taking the next step forward.
- 21:28Speaker 22: And now, obviously we have an enormous challenge this week
- 21:32Speaker 22: with Florida coming in. I think Florida's by far and
- 21:34Speaker 22: away the most talented team that we've played this year.
- 21:37Speaker 22: They've got an excellent group of players, They've played a
- 21:40Speaker 22: very competitive schedule, They've played in two top ten road
- 21:43Speaker 22: environments already, so they're going to be well versed in
- 21:46Speaker 22: what this is like and what it's going to be
- 21:48Speaker 22: like coming into Kyle Field coming off of a huge
- 21:50Speaker 22: top ten win last weekend, and so they'll be full
- 21:53Speaker 22: of confidence and certainly very excited to come in here
- 21:56Speaker 22: and give us their best shot. And so we're looking
- 21:58Speaker 22: forward to the challenge and we'll be excited to back
- 22:00Speaker 22: under the lights in Kyle Field, and so from there
- 22:02Speaker 22: we'll open it up the questions, we're going to go.
- 22:04Speaker 25: There, right, David, Mike not asking for too many coaching
- 22:08Speaker 25: secrets here when I asked this, But you guys have
- 22:10Speaker 25: shown the ability to win a shootout, the grind out
- 22:13Speaker 25: game physicality. How much of that is like the in
- 22:17Speaker 25: game chess piece or is it some of the stuff
- 22:19Speaker 25: leading into the week for the game prep.
- 22:22Speaker 7: Yeah, probably a little bit of both.
- 22:24Speaker 22: I think obviously, when you go into a game, you
- 22:27Speaker 22: kind of have a feeling for where the advantages are,
- 22:31Speaker 22: what the game is going to look like, you know
- 22:34Speaker 22: what success potentially is going to look like. You know,
- 22:37Speaker 22: sometimes you know success is going to look like you know,
- 22:40Speaker 22: we're gonna have to make an awful lot of stops
- 22:42Speaker 22: on defense because you know their defense is really good
- 22:45Speaker 22: and we have an advantage with our defense.
- 22:46Speaker 7: You know.
- 22:47Speaker 22: Sometimes it's the other way, you know, where we're gonna
- 22:49Speaker 22: have to score a lot of points because the matchup
- 22:52Speaker 22: with their offense and our defense maybe isn't ideal. And
- 22:56Speaker 22: then I think sometimes you go into a game and
- 22:58Speaker 22: it starts going a certain way and you have to adjust,
- 23:01Speaker 22: And I think that's one of the things we try
- 23:03Speaker 22: to do really well. Like you get these analytics books
- 23:08Speaker 22: off of a certain score projection, but the game doesn't
- 23:12Speaker 22: always go that way, and so I chuckle sometimes when
- 23:15Speaker 22: people stick to the books, because sometimes in game the
- 23:19Speaker 22: actual percentages and the probabilities are not the same as
- 23:23Speaker 22: what maybe you thought they would be going into it,
- 23:25Speaker 22: and so we try to adjust as best we count
- 23:27Speaker 22: the fly to kind of marry game flow and what's happening.
- 23:31Speaker 7: With the choices and decisions we make.
- 23:33Speaker 18: To the left second row, Aaron, Hey, coach, just wondering
- 23:37Speaker 18: what assesssance you have over Dj Lagway so far?
- 23:40Speaker 22: Yeah, I think Dj is obviously a kid that we've known,
- 23:43Speaker 22: tried very hard to get him here, an extremely talented quarterback.
- 23:48Speaker 22: I think again, media narratives to me are so funny.
- 23:51Speaker 22: I think he's playing so much better. I think he's
- 23:53Speaker 22: made a lot of growth and taking a lot of strides.
- 23:55Speaker 22: You see him very very comfortable back there, and so yeah,
- 23:59Speaker 22: I think he's playing at a really, really high level.
- 24:01Speaker 7: Is a really talented kid.
- 24:03Speaker 18: Front road to the right, Travis, what spends the maybe
- 24:08Speaker 18: key to some of the success in the red zone
- 24:10Speaker 18: and how much of that maybe goes back to that
- 24:12Speaker 18: kind of finished Montreal have had this year.
- 24:13Speaker 22: Yeah, you're talking about our offensive success. Yeah, yeah, I
- 24:17Speaker 22: think I think finish for sure. I think that's a
- 24:20Speaker 22: big part of it. Our ability to run the ball
- 24:22Speaker 22: I think helps you know that that makes it easier.
- 24:25Speaker 22: Our ability then to create some separation in the one
- 24:28Speaker 22: on one matchups that you get because.
- 24:30Speaker 7: You can run the ball. And then I just think,
- 24:33Speaker 7: you know, again, you.
- 24:35Speaker 22: Emphasize things, and you get some and you don't get some,
- 24:38Speaker 22: but we do put such a tremendous emphasis in it.
- 24:41Speaker 7: I don't think there's a.
- 24:42Speaker 22: Lot of teams that go out on Monday and spend
- 24:45Speaker 22: you know, ten minutes working third downs inside the ten
- 24:48Speaker 22: yard line, Like, I don't know that that's normal, and
- 24:50Speaker 22: we do, and that's just because of the premium of
- 24:54Speaker 22: those plays. You know, we throw the touchdown to Casey
- 24:57Speaker 22: on a third and goal. You know, the difference between
- 24:59Speaker 22: that touchdown in a fourteen to three lead and that
- 25:03Speaker 22: becoming a field goal drive and a ten to three
- 25:05Speaker 22: lead is so enormous in terms of.
- 25:07Speaker 7: How the game plays out. And so, you know, we
- 25:10Speaker 7: try to really focus on that area of the field
- 25:13Speaker 7: and it's been good to us so far this year.
- 25:15Speaker 23: So the last second route Alex Arcel made us first
- 25:18Speaker 23: start against Florida last year, you know, and had a
- 25:21Speaker 23: pretty successful game. Just how does how do you think
- 25:24Speaker 23: maybe getting off on the right foot and having a
- 25:26Speaker 23: game like that.
- 25:27Speaker 26: Did for his kind of confidence and mental fortitude.
- 25:31Speaker 22: Yeah, you know, listen, that wasn't an easy situation, and
- 25:34Speaker 22: I think you know not a lot of people wanted
- 25:38Speaker 22: to give us a ton of credit for that win
- 25:40Speaker 22: last year, but that was a big win and that
- 25:42Speaker 22: turned out to be a really good Florida team that
- 25:45Speaker 22: is not an easy place to play. I think you've
- 25:47Speaker 22: seen results since that game speak to how hard it
- 25:51Speaker 22: is to go play in the swamp, and so from
- 25:54Speaker 22: ourselves to go in there as a first time starter play.
- 25:58Speaker 7: The way he did, win in the game the way
- 26:01Speaker 7: we did.
- 26:02Speaker 22: Yeah, I think that brought a lot of confidence into
- 26:04Speaker 22: him and then to endo us as a.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Team in terms of what we can do.
- 26:07Speaker 21: Now.
- 26:08Speaker 7: Having said all of that, none of that helps us
- 26:11Speaker 7: this year.
- 26:12Speaker 22: If we don't focus and do the work in preparation
- 26:14Speaker 22: we need to get ready to go this year, none
- 26:18Speaker 22: of that will matter.
- 26:19Speaker 23: And then you touched on Lagway, But I'm just curious
- 26:21Speaker 23: as you started to dive into Florida and their offense.
- 26:25Speaker 23: Just what really stood out to you about the most
- 26:27Speaker 23: the most about them and the way they were of
- 26:28Speaker 23: a pass the ball this last weekend against Texas.
- 26:32Speaker 22: Yeah, I don't really know that I looked at it
- 26:33Speaker 22: like that. I didn't just watch one game, so I
- 26:36Speaker 22: don't know that I have a great feel for that question.
- 26:39Speaker 22: I think they're really physical. I think they have really
- 26:41Speaker 22: talented pieces on the outside. I think they create a
- 26:44Speaker 22: lot of stress on you in terms of how you
- 26:47Speaker 22: commit numbers to the run versus commit numbers to coverage,
- 26:50Speaker 22: and they're able to kind of take advantage of you
- 26:53Speaker 22: in a lot of different ways. And so I would
- 26:56Speaker 22: say they just present a lot of challenges to you
- 26:59Speaker 22: in terms of defending line.
- 27:00Speaker 4: That's Coachelko.
- 27:01Speaker 1: You heard him lost some of you heard it live
- 27:05Speaker 1: here on the Zone at one thirty this afternoon. I
- 27:08Speaker 1: just I found it very interesting that he called this
- 27:11Speaker 1: Florida team, by far and away the most talented team
- 27:17Speaker 1: we've seen is Notre Dame, Chop Liver. I mean, I
- 27:21Speaker 1: think Notre Dame is pretty talented both sides of the ball.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Still think that, and I was having this conversation today.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I still think Notre Dame is going to be in
- 27:32Speaker 1: the playoffs. I think they're going to run the table.
- 27:35Speaker 1: It's gonna be very controversial, you know, because they lost
- 27:38Speaker 1: two games, but hey, the more A and m wins
- 27:42Speaker 1: and who they lose to in the first game, Miami, Okay,
- 27:45Speaker 1: they've lost their two losses are the two top five teams.
- 27:48Speaker 4: Okay.
- 27:49Speaker 1: If it stays that way, they're gonna have an argument.
- 27:55Speaker 1: And look, I if you know anything about me, you know,
- 28:00Speaker 1: oh I am not a Notre Dame guy. Okay, but
- 28:05Speaker 1: if you know anything about me, you also know.
- 28:09Speaker 21: That I.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Tell you the truth, and the truth is Notre Dame
- 28:16Speaker 1: is going to be there if they run the table,
- 28:18Speaker 1: and I don't see anybody beating them. So but back
- 28:23Speaker 1: to the original, far and away the most talented now
- 28:27Speaker 1: coach Elko has a little Lou Holtz in him. We've
- 28:30Speaker 1: seen that before, you know, building up the directional schools
- 28:34Speaker 1: they played this year. But I mean everybody from the
- 28:42Speaker 1: outside had Florida rated pretty highly when the season started.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Obviously it hadn't turned out that way.
- 28:52Speaker 4: And they beat A.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Do we want to call Texas average? Like out of
- 29:00Speaker 1: an average team? I mean, yeah, so we've got more
- 29:06Speaker 1: to see. So it's weird and we'll talk to the
- 29:10Speaker 1: I'll talk to the writers about this every week. It's like, oh,
- 29:13Speaker 1: this is the best team that's coming in. So at
- 29:16Speaker 1: the time we thought Auburn was the best of those
- 29:18Speaker 1: three straight games, right, and then after we saw Auburn,
- 29:21Speaker 1: we go and Missippi stated taken Tennessee to ot their
- 29:25Speaker 1: four and one. You're going, okay, okay, Well, this is
- 29:28Speaker 1: the best team of the three coming in. Now Florida's
- 29:30Speaker 1: coming off the winover Texas, and we're going, okay, okay, okay,
- 29:34Speaker 1: this is the best of the three teams coming in.
- 29:39Speaker 4: We'll see how all that plays out. All right, We're
- 29:42Speaker 4: going to take a break.
- 29:43Speaker 1: As I mentioned earlier, we've got a special guest coming
- 29:48Speaker 1: into the studio. Doesn't always happen, but I'm excited about that.
- 29:55Speaker 1: We've got the writers coming up in the second hour,
- 29:58Speaker 1: Rusting and Cease, We'll be with us. It is overreaction Monday,
- 30:03Speaker 1: and we take that very seriously around here. Sep Check

- 36:14Speaker 4: you sell during the course of.
- 36:15Speaker 20: The See if I read it at one point that
- 36:18Speaker 20: we went through almost ninety thousand.
- 36:20Speaker 1: On some Wow, there's a lot of turkey that aren't
- 36:23Speaker 1: able to walk after Renfest.
- 36:25Speaker 5: Oh I hadn't. I hadn't really thought about that. Well,
- 36:31Speaker 5: I suppose we can use their breasts at Thanksgiving.
- 36:36Speaker 4: That's a good point.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I don't how do you explain to people, and there
- 36:41Speaker 1: are people new to the community every year, how do
- 36:43Speaker 1: you explain to people what Renfest is when they're going
- 36:48Speaker 1: to come out for the first time.
- 36:49Speaker 4: What should they expect?
- 36:50Speaker 20: Well, what they should do is they expect should expect
- 36:53Speaker 20: to throw off all their troubles and travails from the
- 36:56Speaker 20: work week. They should expect to come to our beautifully
- 37:00Speaker 20: sixteenth century recreated village and once you walk through the gates,
- 37:05Speaker 20: you are transported to a land of fantasy and magic.
- 37:09Speaker 5: It's absolutely glorious.
- 37:11Speaker 20: People in costumes, music around every corner. Stage is filled
- 37:17Speaker 20: with entertainment, and over four hundred artists, artisans and craftsmen
- 37:23Speaker 20: there making unique special items in every medium you can imagine.
- 37:30Speaker 20: It's just a wonderful experience. And every one of these
- 37:33Speaker 20: artisans as a private business owner.
- 37:36Speaker 5: The text Renaissance doesn't own all the goose. They're all
- 37:39Speaker 5: privately owned by our artists and artisans.
- 37:42Speaker 20: So you're going out there, not only are you supporting
- 37:45Speaker 20: the Texas Renaissance Festival, you're supporting small business, and you're
- 37:49Speaker 20: keeping artists alive because many of them have this has
- 37:53Speaker 20: been their livelihood for over fifty years. Out there, one
- 37:56Speaker 20: of our favorites is a queen of the Empanadas, Lady Giles.
- 38:01Speaker 5: She's been out there forty nine.
- 38:03Speaker 4: Oh my gosh. Indeed, now I know I've been here
- 38:06Speaker 4: a while, so I know you've been here a while.
- 38:08Speaker 20: Oh indeed, indeed I've spent well my youth forty years
- 38:13Speaker 20: out there, and of course the last twenty seven I
- 38:15Speaker 20: have when I took over as king. It's just been
- 38:18Speaker 20: an amazing time going all over the Brass Valley with
- 38:22Speaker 20: my queen telling everyone about the pistole.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Has anyone during that time tried to usurp the throne?
- 38:28Speaker 1: That's what I want to know.
- 38:30Speaker 5: No, it seems to be a throne that people don't
- 38:33Speaker 5: really watch.
- 38:34Speaker 1: It's just too much fun, too much fun.
- 38:44Speaker 5: Indeed, as they say, it's good to be king, and
- 38:48Speaker 5: as I often respond, it does not suck.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Hey, we're at Texas, So all of these weekends in
- 38:54Speaker 1: October through November, at some point your costume is going
- 39:01Speaker 1: to be really warm, and at some point it probably
- 39:05Speaker 1: won't be nearly warm enough.
- 39:08Speaker 4: Yeah, on some of those barbarian all of the different
- 39:11Speaker 4: flavors of the weather of Texas stone.
- 39:13Speaker 5: Absolutely, and we're open rain or shine. We have plenty
- 39:18Speaker 5: of places for people to go throughout the day.
- 39:21Speaker 20: And it's a great experience that first cool winter breeze
- 39:27Speaker 20: that blows down everybody.
- 39:29Speaker 5: You know, everybody gets very excited. Yes, a little extra chipper,
- 39:33Speaker 5: and no doubt.
- 39:34Speaker 20: Even when it's hot, it's just a good excuse to
- 39:37Speaker 20: enjoy a fine libation and cool off in the shade,
- 39:41Speaker 20: sitting on one of our little tree garters and just
- 39:44Speaker 20: taking in the site over sixty five acres. Perhaps they
- 39:48Speaker 20: take a little wild fire magic garden.

- 41:59Speaker 29: and Nico k Allins and Jalen Noel each caught touchdowns
- 42:02Speaker 29: as well. Nick Chubb rushed for sixty one yards and
- 42:04Speaker 29: a score, while the Texans defense picked off Cooper Rush

- 44:41Speaker 1: But right now, we got to go out and listen
- 44:44Speaker 1: to part of the Steve Sarkesian News conference today.
- 44:53Speaker 4: WHOA, WHOA, What what happened was?
- 44:56Speaker 26: When you look at it, it was just not a
- 44:58Speaker 26: very good start to the ballgame four. You know, I
- 45:01Speaker 26: think I think Florida scored in the first three of
- 45:03Speaker 26: the four drives they had. Of the three scoring drives,
- 45:07Speaker 26: I think all three drives were ten plus plays in
- 45:10Speaker 26: those drives, so they really controlled the ball. They got
- 45:13Speaker 26: themselves in very manageable third downs. I think there were
- 45:15Speaker 26: five for six on third down in those drives, and
- 45:18Speaker 26: so they possessed the ball. And on the flip side, offensively,
- 45:21Speaker 26: we were not very good on third down in the
- 45:23Speaker 26: first half, and the majority of those third downs were
- 45:26Speaker 26: third and eleven plus. I think six of our eleven
- 45:29Speaker 26: third downs were third. We're third or nine plus, which
- 45:33Speaker 26: is not a winning form in the first success. That
- 45:35Speaker 26: goes back to line of scrimmage. I did not think
- 45:37Speaker 26: that we played well on either side of the ball
- 45:39Speaker 26: the line of scrimmage in the game. We are more
- 45:43Speaker 26: than capable to perform better than that, and we're gonna
- 45:45Speaker 26: need to in this conference, regardless of the opponent, to
- 45:48Speaker 26: be better, to be better at the line of scrimmage
- 45:50Speaker 26: that way. You know, a couple of things that were
- 45:52Speaker 26: to me a little uncharacteristic that that we're kind of frustrating, was,
- 45:58Speaker 26: you know, coming out in the first half of the game,
- 46:00Speaker 26: I thought we managed the crowd noise really well, and
- 46:03Speaker 26: then in the second half I think we have five
- 46:05Speaker 26: pre snap penalties that that that that you know, can
- 46:08Speaker 26: mount on you, especially when you get them in back
- 46:10Speaker 26: to back scenario.
- 46:11Speaker 4: So we've got it.
- 46:12Speaker 26: We've got to minimize the self inflicted wounds from an
- 46:15Speaker 26: offensive perspective, and then defensively, you know, giving up explosive
- 46:19Speaker 26: plays and that is something that we've really prided ourselves on,
- 46:22Speaker 26: and we did not do a great job of that.
- 46:24Speaker 26: We gave up, you know, two explosive pass plays. I
- 46:26Speaker 26: think we gave up five runs that were explosive runs.
- 46:29Speaker 21: Uh.
- 46:30Speaker 26: And so when you allow people to get yards in chunks,
- 46:33Speaker 26: you know that they can they can move down the
- 46:34Speaker 26: field quickly. So we've got to get back to playing
- 46:36Speaker 26: to that standard as well. You know, obviously, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 26: getting a pump blocked is not ideal. We're probably fortunate
- 46:43Speaker 26: that that wasn't a touchdown, that it was only a safety.
- 46:46Speaker 26: Uh And credit to the defense of holding them after that.
- 46:49Speaker 26: But but again I thought on special teams we were
- 46:51Speaker 26: close to having some some really momentum changing plays and
- 46:54Speaker 26: controlling the vertical field position.
- 46:56Speaker 7: You know, three.
- 46:57Speaker 26: Times we have an opportunity to pin them in so
- 47:00Speaker 26: the ten, if not inside the five, you know, twice
- 47:03Speaker 26: we we don't down the ball inside the five, and
- 47:05Speaker 26: the other one we kind of get a bad hop
- 47:07Speaker 26: by Jack. You know, it ends up being a sixty
- 47:09Speaker 26: two yard punt that goes into the end zone for
- 47:11Speaker 26: a touchback. So you know, we're trying to play the
- 47:13Speaker 26: vertical field position game and pin them deep.
- 47:15Speaker 7: We are inability to do that.
- 47:17Speaker 26: That was sixty yards, right That essentially you give up
- 47:20Speaker 26: in touchbacks right there. That that we've got to improve upon.
- 47:22Speaker 26: But to me, one of the biggest storyline of the
- 47:25Speaker 26: game is a lot of scrimmage. You know, six sacks
- 47:27Speaker 26: to none. Their ability to run the ball. Our inability
- 47:30Speaker 26: to run the ball I think created all of the
- 47:33Speaker 26: other opportunities in the game. Created their explosive plays in
- 47:36Speaker 26: the past game allowed them to rush the rush the
- 47:39Speaker 26: quarterback on our end. But as I said Saturday, you know,
- 47:43Speaker 26: I really want to commend our players for their fight.
- 47:45Speaker 26: I thought in the second half our ability defensively, I
- 47:49Speaker 26: think the final four drives were three punts in interception.
- 47:52Speaker 20: Uh.
- 47:52Speaker 26: The offense is ability to continue to fight down to
- 47:55Speaker 26: the final whistle. So that will never be questioned about
- 47:58Speaker 26: our team. We just need to play, but we need
- 48:00Speaker 26: to play better when we start the ball game, and
- 48:02Speaker 26: we will. And at credit to our guys, they got
- 48:05Speaker 26: back to work today with the right mentality, the right
- 48:07Speaker 26: right attitude that they need to have. We got week
- 48:10Speaker 26: two in the SEC and it happens to be the
- 48:12Speaker 26: All State Red River rovaliy against a very good Oklahoma team,
- 48:16Speaker 26: fantastic defensive team. Coach Venables. You can see, you know
- 48:20Speaker 26: his his you know his footprint, his handprint all over
- 48:23Speaker 26: this defense. Now in year three, he's recruited the players
- 48:26Speaker 26: that fit his style, the very active upfront, very athletic group,
- 48:30Speaker 26: multitude of pressures, multitude of coverages. I think they lead
- 48:34Speaker 26: the SEC and about everything first in scoring defense first,
- 48:37Speaker 26: and passing yards allowed first, in total first down defense first,
- 48:41Speaker 26: and passion pass efficiency defense first, in net punt second,
- 48:45Speaker 26: and rushing defense fifth, and passing offense. So you can
- 48:48Speaker 26: go down the line about how great they're playing on
- 48:50Speaker 26: defense right now. So we've got our work cut out
- 48:53Speaker 26: for us. And then obviously offensively, you know, they've got
- 48:56Speaker 26: a dynamic play caller who stresses you with formations, with tempo.
- 49:01Speaker 26: The quarterback is a tremendous player, and they got two
- 49:03Speaker 26: really good wideouts and so it's gonna be a heck
- 49:05Speaker 26: of a challenge for us. The goals to get to
- 49:08Speaker 26: one to know this week, you know, we got to
- 49:09Speaker 26: get back to one and one in conference play, and
- 49:11Speaker 26: it happens to be a heck of a challenge and
- 49:13Speaker 26: in my opinion, the best game in college football in
- 49:15Speaker 26: the regular season. This is a great rivalry to be
- 49:17Speaker 26: part of. Humbled and honored to be part of this game.
- 49:20Speaker 26: And then looking forward to the opportunity Saturday afternoon.
- 49:24Speaker 19: If you have a question, Chip on the far right, Steve,
- 49:29Speaker 19: the offensive line, obviously it was a struggle. Do you
- 49:32Speaker 19: make any other changes on the line personnel wise this week?
- 49:38Speaker 19: And you know what, what else can be done? I
- 49:41Speaker 19: guess gotta play better, got to coach better, gotta play better.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Steve, with with with the information that you have now,
- 49:52Speaker 3: do you think you and your staff made the right
- 49:54Speaker 3: decision not to pursue an offensive lineman in the portal
- 49:57Speaker 3: this offseason?
- 49:58Speaker 26: You know, I think inevitably you can play the hypothetical
- 50:02Speaker 26: and the what ifs. You know, it's what's available and
- 50:04Speaker 26: then what do you have? And you know, I think
- 50:06Speaker 26: our guys that we have are more than capable. Like
- 50:09Speaker 26: I said, we got to coach better and we got
- 50:10Speaker 26: to play better.
- 50:13Speaker 17: Another O line question when it comes to determining who
- 50:16Speaker 17: goes out there at left guard, You've put a few
- 50:17Speaker 17: different guys there, how do you throughout the week determines
- 50:20Speaker 17: who gets that opportunity or the most opportunities And then
- 50:23Speaker 17: kind of with the penalties thing, y'all kept going with
- 50:25Speaker 17: the clap count. Do y'all have the silent count in
- 50:28Speaker 17: y'all's repertoire and how often y'all feel like you need
- 50:30Speaker 17: to use it this year?
- 50:31Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 50:32Speaker 26: So, you know, obviously practice determines a lot of who plays,
- 50:37Speaker 26: you know, who do we feel is ready to perform?
- 50:40Speaker 4: And then the flow of the game.
- 50:42Speaker 26: You know that I didn't think Nick Brooks was going
- 50:45Speaker 26: to go out there and play a perfect games first
- 50:46Speaker 26: time he's ever played in a real game at left guard.
- 50:49Speaker 26: But I think there's there's there's traits in there, and
- 50:52Speaker 26: there's ability in there, and the growth and practice in
- 50:54Speaker 26: there that I think he's got a very bright future
- 50:56Speaker 26: for us. There was gonna be growing pains, and we
- 50:59Speaker 26: all lived through some of those Saturday, but I do
- 51:02Speaker 26: think he's got a bright future. We definitely have the
- 51:04Speaker 26: silent count. We did not think it was needed at all.
- 51:09Speaker 26: Like I said, we clapped all first half long, and
- 51:11Speaker 26: we were fine. I thought we got a little antsy
- 51:14Speaker 26: with them making some calls to shift their defensive line
- 51:19Speaker 26: that right before we were snapping the ball. That that
- 51:22Speaker 26: caused us to be a little bit jittery. So we
- 51:24Speaker 26: got to have a little bit more poison composure at
- 51:25Speaker 26: the line of scrimmage.
- 51:28Speaker 31: Coach, you said you commended the players for their fight
- 51:30Speaker 31: in the second half. Why do you think it wasn't
- 51:32Speaker 31: there in the first half after two weeks together.
- 51:35Speaker 26: Yeah, you know, it's it's that's that's always the age
- 51:38Speaker 26: old you know, challenge as a coach. You know, you
- 51:41Speaker 26: think you push all the right buttons all week. Nothing
- 51:45Speaker 26: indicated to me that that we weren't gonna come out
- 51:47Speaker 26: and play really good. From the first play, we have
- 51:51Speaker 26: an opportunity to seize all the momentum in the game.
- 51:54Speaker 26: You know, it's a great hit by Grace and Littleton,
- 51:56Speaker 26: the balls on the ground, and I'm not saying that
- 51:59Speaker 26: would have changed the whole outcome of the game, but man,
- 52:01Speaker 26: we recover a fumble right there on the you know whatever,
- 52:04Speaker 26: it is thirty or so yard line going in maybe
- 52:07Speaker 26: a different game. So you have to seize moments in games,
- 52:09Speaker 26: you have to seize opportunities. And I thought we had
- 52:12Speaker 26: some and we had opportunities to to seize some some moments,
- 52:16Speaker 26: and we didn't capitalize. You know, we we we we
- 52:19Speaker 26: have a we have a shot played am at Moseley.
- 52:21Speaker 26: We we just miss. You know, protection is a little leaky.
- 52:23Speaker 26: We have a double pass we just miss. You know,
- 52:25Speaker 26: we have a fumble on the ground we don't recover.
- 52:27Speaker 26: And so, you know, and really good teams play on
- 52:30Speaker 26: the road. You've got to capitalize on opportunities when we're there,
- 52:34Speaker 26: and we just didn't. But but again, like I said,
- 52:37Speaker 26: the line of scrimmage was probably the more frustrating thing.
- 52:40Speaker 26: And I take responsibility for that because again I felt
- 52:44Speaker 26: really good about it going into the game.
- 52:46Speaker 7: It just didn't.
- 52:47Speaker 26: It just didn't come to fruition the way I had
- 52:49Speaker 26: envisioned it. And so we've got to get back to
- 52:51Speaker 26: the drawing board to make sure we're ready to go, right, Eric.
- 52:55Speaker 31: Steve, from your vantage point, some of the areas where
- 52:57Speaker 31: the offensive struggle, whether it be penalties or in a
- 53:00Speaker 31: lead to convert in later downs, how much do you
- 53:02Speaker 31: attribute that to inexperience on offense versus maybe preparation during
- 53:06Speaker 31: the week to go out and execute.
- 53:07Speaker 26: Well, I think it's it's probably a combination of things.
- 53:13Speaker 26: You know, we've we've had moments. You know, I heard
- 53:15Speaker 26: about for the first two or three weeks was about
- 53:17Speaker 26: the passing game, and we kind of gotten that somewhat
- 53:20Speaker 26: fixed and gotten guys healthy, and guys have found a rhythm,
- 53:23Speaker 26: and now we're onto the run game, and now we're
- 53:25Speaker 26: talking about pass protection and so again, you know, I
- 53:28Speaker 26: think ultimately you try to find the best rhythm in
- 53:31Speaker 26: an offense. And you know, when you focus on put
- 53:35Speaker 26: so much attention on one thing and then you neglect another,
- 53:37Speaker 26: then that can become an issue too.
- 53:39Speaker 4: And so we've got to focus on all of it.
- 53:41Speaker 26: Whether it's a player who hasn't played too much, whether
- 53:44Speaker 26: it's the scheme of what we're calling, whether it's about
- 53:47Speaker 26: the player's preparation and getting themselves prepared to play maybe
- 53:51Speaker 26: and maybe it's a veteran player that's trying to do
- 53:53Speaker 26: too much rather than just doing his job. And so
- 53:56Speaker 26: there's a variety of things that can play a part
- 53:58Speaker 26: into that. But I think first and foremost, for us.
- 54:00Speaker 26: It's it's it's executing on first and second down, regardless
- 54:04Speaker 26: of what we're calling, whether it's a run game, pass game, RPO,
- 54:07Speaker 26: whatever that looks like. Because we've got to put ourselves
- 54:10Speaker 26: in more manageable third downs. And you know, it doesn't
- 54:14Speaker 26: matter what league you're in, from from Little league to
- 54:16Speaker 26: the NFL, when when you play third and nine plus football,
- 54:20Speaker 26: the percentages over time tell you your odds of converting
- 54:24Speaker 26: a first down go down dramatically. And so we've got
- 54:27Speaker 26: to do a better job of putting ourselves in manageable
- 54:30Speaker 26: third down situations. And so everybody plays a part in that, myself,
- 54:35Speaker 26: the our coaches, the play calling, to our execution on
- 54:39Speaker 26: first and second down, to minimizing eliminating some of the
- 54:43Speaker 26: self inflicted wounds and penalties. So all of that adds
- 54:46Speaker 26: up to we have got to we've got to get
- 54:48Speaker 26: ourselves into more third and two to third and six
- 54:50Speaker 26: type third downs, and those they're just the nutty percentages
- 54:53Speaker 26: go up that you're gonna convert.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Makes it difficult when you can't run the football and
- 55:02Speaker 1: you can't pass block for the quarterback to throw the football.
- 55:06Speaker 4: That makes offensive football.
- 55:09Speaker 3: Tough.
