- 0:00Speaker 1: This podcast is recorded on Gadigal land. Always was, always
- 0:04Speaker 1: will be Aboriginal land.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Hey chicks, I'm Sal.
- 0:12Speaker 3: And I'm Al.
- 0:13Speaker 4: And this is Two Broke Chicks, the show that shares
- 0:15Speaker 4: life lessons that do itself make you rich in life.
- 0:18Speaker 4: And welcome back to another monthly favourites episode. Woo!
- 0:23Speaker 2: It's August, baby. Let's go. Let's go! It's almost spring.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:29Speaker 4: By the time this episode jumps out, it's almost spring.
- 0:36Speaker 2: But yeah, very excited.
- 0:37Speaker 4: If you're new to these episodes, we basically share what
- 0:39Speaker 4: we've been living this month, what we've been watching, buying, enjoying.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Would you like to kick us off? I would love
- 0:47Speaker 2: to kick us off.
- 0:49Speaker 1: My first August favorite, drumroll please, is Sterling Point.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Okay.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Okay. So Sterling Point is this new teen drama, if
- 1:01Speaker 1: you will, rom-com drama, whatever, that's just dropped on Prime.
- 1:06Speaker 3: And I literally am so obsessed with it.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I saw a post and.
- 1:12Speaker 1: It was like, this is the new off-campus, blah, blah, blah,
- 1:14Speaker 1: you're going to be just as obsessed.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I watched the first episode and I was like.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Don't know.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I don't know if that's the correct take. And then
- 1:24Speaker 1: I watched a second and a third episode. I'm in.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Oh, really? I was locked in. I was so locked in.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Essentially, this show feels like The O.C.
- 1:33Speaker 2: And Outer Banks had.
- 1:35Speaker 3: A baby in the woods.
- 1:36Speaker 2: What a combo. Right? It's set in this.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Beautiful forest woodland by the lake area called Stirling Point.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And it focuses on the main character... Annie, who her
- 1:52Speaker 1: grandfather passes away, who she wasn't close with, but her
- 1:55Speaker 1: father's been keeping these letters from him her entire life
- 1:58Speaker 1: a secret.
- 1:59Speaker 2: And she realizes that her grandfather owned.
- 2:01Speaker 1: This island, Stirling Point, and he leaves her and her
- 2:06Speaker 1: twin brother the island. Her and her twin brother are adopted, though.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So her parents, her dad.
- 2:14Speaker 3: And her mom couldn't have babies.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:16Speaker 3: But her mom has died.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Sorry. That was very like, was your life traumatic? What's
- 2:23Speaker 2: your favorite color? Pink. Me too. Was your life traumatic?
- 2:30Speaker 1: But yeah, so that's essentially the first like 10 minutes
- 2:33Speaker 1: of the show.
- 2:34Speaker 2: So in secret, she goes to Sterling Point. She doesn't
- 2:37Speaker 2: tell her dad.
- 2:39Speaker 3: She goes to Sterling Point to kind of figure out
- 2:41Speaker 3: what's going on.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Cause she's like, why have I Why has he been
- 2:43Speaker 1: hiding all of these letters for all these years?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and why has he inherited this to me.
- 2:47Speaker 1: When I'm that close with him?
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, like I didn't even know that this place existed.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And so she goes to the island and she kind
- 2:55Speaker 1: of starts meeting a couple little characters here and there.
- 2:57Speaker 1: We meet like all of the side characters in like
- 2:59Speaker 1: the span of maybe like 10 minutes, which is great.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Love that. Pepper in the characters for me. We're going
- 3:04Speaker 1: to see more of them later. And then she goes
- 3:07Speaker 1: and stays at her grandfather's cabin because she's inherited it. Mm-hmm.
- 3:11Speaker 1: She goes back late at night and there's someone in
- 3:13Speaker 1: the house. It's her grandfather's other granddaughter.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Ooh. So they go, she's like, who are you? So
- 3:23Speaker 2: her cousin? No, her sister. Whoa. Secret sister.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Whoa. Yeah.
- 3:30Speaker 2: And so I'm going to leave it there. But basically
- 3:33Speaker 2: there's like also, you know, there's romance in it. There's
- 3:36Speaker 2: love triangles. But the main actress in it. Oh my God.
- 3:42Speaker 2: She is so fucking talented.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And this is the thing that I'm like, I feel
- 3:47Speaker 1: like I've been ranting on is like new talent, new talent.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I have not seen her in anything else before, but
- 3:54Speaker 1: it was so all of these people, I've never seen
- 3:56Speaker 1: them in any shows before. It's just so refreshing watching
- 3:59Speaker 1: a show with new characters and new people and new talent.
- 4:04Speaker 2: It's also an original show.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Like it's an original story and it is just so good.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And the other thing that I, what I think just
- 4:12Speaker 1: makes this show work so well is it's set in
- 4:15Speaker 1: a modern day and there's not a single fucking TikTok
- 4:18Speaker 1: dance in it.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Oh really? There is, it is a cell phones free show.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Do they reference phones at all?
- 4:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Like they text each other and they call each other.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Like they use their phones as we would, but it's
- 4:29Speaker 1: not trying to shove 2026 down your throat yeah thank
- 4:34Speaker 1: god and that's why it works i literally watched this
- 4:36Speaker 1: and i was like that's it i'm moving to a
- 4:38Speaker 1: forest yeah it's so so.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Good okay would i like it yes okay how long
- 4:44Speaker 4: are the episodes so the episodes are about 40 minutes
- 4:47Speaker 4: 50 minutes and how many episodes are there eight episodes
- 4:50Speaker 4: that's good for these days yes i would love if
- 4:53Speaker 4: it was 22 but it's just not the same But yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 4: I love it.
- 4:57Speaker 2: There's kissing, there's plot twists, there's betrayal. All the things
- 5:03Speaker 2: we love. Okay.
- 5:05Speaker 4: All right.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I'll add it to the list.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 2: And wait, sorry, where'd you say you can watch it? Prime.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Prime.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Nice.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Okay.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Nice.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Nice.
- 5:11Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:13Speaker 4: My first August favorite. So last week we were invited
- 5:19Speaker 4: to the Chemist Warehouse Showcase down in Melbourne, which is
- 5:24Speaker 4: Really fun.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Sephora does a similar one as well.
- 5:26Speaker 4: But for anyone who isn't across it, basically like lots
- 5:29Speaker 4: of different brands that are stocked at Chemist Warehouse showcase
- 5:33Speaker 4: their new arrivals or their hero products or upcoming launches.
- 5:39Speaker 4: And we are lucky enough to get invited and we
- 5:41Speaker 4: get to go and get like a little sneak peek
- 5:43Speaker 4: and play with the products and whatnot. And so from that,
- 5:47Speaker 4: my August favorite is a bunch of drugstore beauty items
- 5:52Speaker 4: under $ 30 that I'm.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Loving at the moment.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yeah, so I will say we were invited, but this
- 5:58Speaker 4: isn't like a sponsored segment or anything. They're all just
- 6:00Speaker 4: products that I genuinely thought were cool and I thought
- 6:03Speaker 4: that you chicks would be interested in as well. So
- 6:06Speaker 4: my first one is the new Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky
- 6:10Speaker 4: High Tubing Mascara.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Say that five times fast. I know.
- 6:14Speaker 4: So the Sky High Mascara is like one of their
- 6:17Speaker 4: cult products, like probably one of their most popular products
- 6:21Speaker 4: of all time. And the mascara has gone through a
- 6:23Speaker 4: few different iterations. Like I think maybe last year they
- 6:26Speaker 4: brought out the blue and the burgundy one as well.
- 6:29Speaker 4: And it's really popular and it is a really good mascara.
- 6:32Speaker 4: And it's $ 29, so it sits in that range. pretty
- 6:35Speaker 4: affordable range, especially because it's always on sale. But they've
- 6:40Speaker 4: just launched a tubing version, which if you get panned
- 6:43Speaker 4: eyes or, you know, you get your mascara transferring or
- 6:47Speaker 4: going flaky, which I absolutely do, definitely try this.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And tubing mascara is really easy to take off, isn't it?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Is that the whole thing?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So basically it's like the mascara.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Forms like a waterproof, almost like casing around your eyelashes
- 7:05Speaker 4: so then when you're taking your mascara off it pretty
- 7:07Speaker 4: much just like pulls off like a little tube hence
- 7:11Speaker 4: the tubing of mascara so I have tried some in
- 7:15Speaker 4: the past that I found were quite waxy and they
- 7:17Speaker 4: almost like I felt like they really stuck to my
- 7:21Speaker 4: eyelashes I think because they have that like waterproof element
- 7:24Speaker 4: so I found them pretty hard to take off but
- 7:27Speaker 4: this one is good and it comes off easy and
- 7:30Speaker 4: I found that like yeah it didn't transfer throughout the
- 7:32Speaker 4: day and I have used other ones like the hourglass
- 7:35Speaker 4: one um the hourglass tubing mascara which I really like
- 7:38Speaker 4: but obviously that's quite expensive so I feel like this
- 7:42Speaker 4: is a more affordable option which is great and also
- 7:46Speaker 4: it's just good to see like a tubing version in
- 7:48Speaker 4: that iconic mascara the next The next launch that I
- 7:53Speaker 4: was excited about is the Rimmel Slipstick.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Yes, I loved these.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 4: So this is around $ 27, but it's basically a lip
- 8:01Speaker 4: oil cross lipstick.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Is it $ 27?
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah. That's kind of spinny.
- 8:07Speaker 4: All of these things that I've seen, though, because I
- 8:10Speaker 4: was looking on Chemist Warehouse, they were all on sale.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Yeah, true.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I think sometimes drugstore brands and affordable brands, I know
- 8:19Speaker 1: we don't say drugstore in Australia, it's just the easiest
- 8:21Speaker 1: way to- clarify where you get them from yeah um
- 8:25Speaker 1: like an affordable beauty brands i think they put the
- 8:28Speaker 1: rrp the like retail price high so that they can
- 8:35Speaker 1: discount it as like a strategy yeah yeah because if
- 8:39Speaker 1: you're like it's half.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Off yeah i'm gonna get that now but it's half
- 8:43Speaker 2: off for like.
- 8:44Speaker 1: The whole year i feel like that's like a technique
- 8:47Speaker 1: because i'm like 27 bucks i'm like that's kind of expensive.
- 8:50Speaker 2: For lipstick yeah yeah but yeah when like drugstore lipsticks
- 8:56Speaker 2: yeah yeah but.
- 8:57Speaker 4: I have seen that it has been on sale which
- 9:00Speaker 4: is good well that's good yeah but yeah so it's
- 9:02Speaker 4: like a lip oil cross lipstick and it's quite buildable
- 9:06Speaker 4: so it's that it has like a really beautiful sheen
- 9:08Speaker 4: to it um and if you want to use it
- 9:10Speaker 4: like on top of another lipstick or if you want
- 9:12Speaker 4: something that's a little bit more subtle you can do
- 9:14Speaker 4: that or you can build it up for it to
- 9:16Speaker 4: be like a more opaque, full coverage.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Kind of lipstick.
- 9:20Speaker 4: But they also had so many beautiful shades in it.
- 9:24Speaker 4: My favorite was Cappuccino, I think, which was like one
- 9:27Speaker 4: of the classic nude shades.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Was it Cappuccino Light? Yeah, Cappuccino Light. And then I
- 9:32Speaker 2: had Cappuccino. Yeah, and they were really beautiful. But there
- 9:35Speaker 2: was also like a really beautiful red that I want
- 9:38Speaker 2: to get. Oh, yeah. That looked really nice. Who would
- 9:40Speaker 2: look great in that? Maddie McRae.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 2: What wouldn't she look great in? Seriously.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Hate her.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Moving on to my next monthly favorite, Maddie McRae. Yeah.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Literal beautiful angel princess. That's a year-round favorite.
- 9:52Speaker 4: But yeah, so definitely recommend that. And also because it's very,
- 9:57Speaker 4: very hydrating, which a lot of lip, like lipstick, products
- 10:00Speaker 4: can be quite.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And you don't really know you don't normally go for
- 10:04Speaker 1: like a um oh no you do i'm lying i'm
- 10:09Speaker 1: still in our friendship of 10 years ago where you
- 10:11Speaker 1: would only wear like a matte lip but you wear
- 10:13Speaker 1: more of a because like In my brain, your character
- 10:17Speaker 1: wears matte lip all the time. Yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 2: But you've started wearing more of a glossy lip, right? Yes.
- 10:23Speaker 1: No.
- 10:23Speaker 4: No, you're right because I always overline my lips and
- 10:27Speaker 4: whenever I apply lipstick, I'm always applying it over my
- 10:30Speaker 4: natural lip line. So I don't typically wear something that is, yeah,
- 10:35Speaker 4: like a glossy, like a really glossy light lipstick because
- 10:39Speaker 4: then I feel like you can see my natural lip
- 10:41Speaker 4: under it.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Um, but because you can build this up and like
- 10:45Speaker 2: you can do multiple sort of.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So if you want like a sheer kind of look,
- 10:49Speaker 1: you can do that. If you want a more full
- 10:51Speaker 1: coverage look, you can do that. Yeah.
- 10:52Speaker 2: And is it also, and how does it go if
- 10:55Speaker 2: you rub your lips a lot? Honestly, I, I.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Have yet to find a lipstick that can withhold my
- 11:05Speaker 4: lip rubbing.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Like there are so.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Many lipsticks that people are like, this lasts me forever.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Like I can eat, I can drink, I can kiss.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And I'm fine. I can eat, I can drink, I
- 11:14Speaker 2: can kiss. Like so many people talk about that and
- 11:17Speaker 2: I'm like, great.
- 11:18Speaker 4: And then I try it and after two seconds, it's
- 11:21Speaker 4: like a little anxious habit that I have.
- 11:23Speaker 2: I think I rub my lips together all the time.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Unfortunately, the jury's still out on that one. So it
- 11:30Speaker 2: just needs a little bit of reapplication. For me, I
- 11:33Speaker 2: think for your average person, it would be perfect. But
- 11:36Speaker 2: for me, I am cycle. No, don't say that.
- 11:39Speaker 4: And then my last one is a skincare product, but
- 11:43Speaker 4: it's the... I don't know if it'll be the same one.
- 11:47Speaker 2: We'll see. It's the Sookin Awakening Face Gel. Holy cow. Shit.
- 11:52Speaker 4: So this is $ 25. I really enjoy Suken. I like
- 11:56Speaker 4: their like body range. I've used their skincare before.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Very affordable.
- 12:00Speaker 4: I feel like it's kind of like back to the basics,
- 12:03Speaker 4: good skincare. But I'd never seen this before. I'm pretty
- 12:07Speaker 4: sure it is a new product, but I was like,
- 12:09Speaker 4: holy fucking shit.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Like I was so excited to get my hands on it.
- 12:13Speaker 4: So it's essentially a face gel. That you use in
- 12:16Speaker 4: the morning. And it's got coffee seed to reduce puffiness,
- 12:19Speaker 4: guarana to boost circulation and radiance, and caffeine to brighten
- 12:23Speaker 4: and revitalize. But the best part is that it comes
- 12:27Speaker 4: in this tube with an applicator that has like four
- 12:30Speaker 4: silver balls in it. And then the gel comes out
- 12:33Speaker 4: like around those silver balls.
- 12:35Speaker 2: And then you rub that on your face.
- 12:37Speaker 3: It's like a massager.
- 12:38Speaker 2: It's like a cleaning gel. massage applicator. Oh, it's the best.
- 12:41Speaker 3: It's the beast.
- 12:42Speaker 4: And for a morning when you're feeling puffy because I
- 12:46Speaker 4: think a lot of people use like those like different
- 12:49Speaker 4: massaging tools in the morning to de-puff and also just
- 12:52Speaker 4: to wake them up.
- 12:54Speaker 2: And I'm like this is a two-in-one. A two-in-one. And
- 12:57Speaker 2: also I'm like imagine if you put it in the fridge.
- 12:59Speaker 3: And how much is it?
- 13:00Speaker 2: $ 25.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And I feel like that is such a good price
- 13:05Speaker 1: for the size of the product and also like the applicator. Yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 1: There are some bougie brands that would be charging like
- 13:11Speaker 1: a fuck ton just because of that applicator.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It's so, so good. And they also have an eye
- 13:20Speaker 1: version of it, right?
- 13:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it's a smaller but still metal applicator,
- 13:26Speaker 2: which I love. I've used some other.
- 13:28Speaker 4: products like that. Like the Paula's Choice one has that
- 13:31Speaker 4: metal applicator as well. And again, it's just so incredibly
- 13:34Speaker 4: cooling to apply. And especially if you get puffy eyes,
- 13:37Speaker 4: which I do.
- 13:38Speaker 2: In the morning, it's so good.
- 13:39Speaker 3: Sorry, I'm not getting that.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I was more just like, no, no, no. I was
- 13:43Speaker 2: just sorry. But I'm like, God, I'm really glad we've
- 13:48Speaker 2: got it now.
- 13:48Speaker 4: But can you imagine the amount of diabolical hangovers that
- 13:52Speaker 4: would have got us through? Yeah.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Take me back. Like the one today. If I could
- 13:56Speaker 2: turn back time, yeah.
- 13:57Speaker 1: You know?
- 13:58Speaker 2: Exactly. But yeah, that's it. Those are my faves. Oh,
- 14:01Speaker 2: great picks. Okay, what's your next fave?
- 14:09Speaker 1: Okay, my next fave is a little hack that I've seen.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But before I tell you the hack, I have some
- 14:15Speaker 1: questions for you.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Oh, pop quiz. Pop quiz. How many times... This week,
- 14:22Speaker 2: have you opened or used Pinterest? Maybe like four times. Wow,
- 14:32Speaker 2: four times. That's good.
- 14:33Speaker 3: I reckon I use it probably about four to six
- 14:36Speaker 3: times a week.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yeah. And what were you looking at? I was looking
- 14:40Speaker 2: at mainly stuff for work. So I was looking for
- 14:43Speaker 2: like funny reaction pics. And then I think I was
- 14:46Speaker 2: looking for an outfit inspiration for a concert I'm going
- 14:48Speaker 2: to tomorrow. Love that. What is your main gripe when
- 14:52Speaker 2: you're using Pinterest? The ads. Yes.
- 14:55Speaker 1: So Pinterest closed out Q2 2026 with $ 1. 18 billion in revenue,
- 15:02Speaker 1: up 18% year over year. Wow. They also hit a
- 15:05Speaker 1: record 640 million monthly users and have revealed Gen Z
- 15:09Speaker 1: now makes up over half of the platform, which that
- 15:13Speaker 1: all checks out.
- 15:15Speaker 2: However, what was very interesting.
- 15:17Speaker 1: to me is how much of the comments of this
- 15:21Speaker 1: post was Pinterest is ads only.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I need Pinterest to remove their ads. Pinterest is literally
- 15:27Speaker 2: AI and ads. And yeah, literally so many comments about
- 15:32Speaker 2: how Pinterest is just ads, ads, ads, AI, AI, AI, AI.
- 15:35Speaker 2: So I have a hack to get rid of the ads.
- 15:39Speaker 1: On Pinterest and it's not the one I've told you already.
- 15:42Speaker 1: So a couple of little hacks. One, if you hide
- 15:46Speaker 1: and you press three dots, on the images and you
- 15:49Speaker 1: go hide image, hide image, and you hide five or
- 15:52Speaker 1: more ads and then you refresh the page, all the
- 15:55Speaker 1: ads disappear.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 15:57Speaker 1: And you can get rid of all the ads on Pinterest.
- 16:00Speaker 1: But if you put a swear word in your.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Search, no ads come up. I saw this on TikTok
- 16:08Speaker 2: and I was like– That makes sense. If you search
- 16:13Speaker 2: leopard print dress bitch– No ad.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Really?
- 16:18Speaker 4: Try it.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Try it right now. What are the search results like?
- 16:22Speaker 1: Maybe I don't think they were affected on my endeavors.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Okay. If anything, they come off a little bit sassier. Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Let's do leather jacket.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Outfit.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Outfit. Fuck. No ads. No ads. Told you. Oh, my God.
- 16:47Speaker 1: How good.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I'm scrolling to see if.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Yeah. And, like, all of the results are just as, like,
- 16:54Speaker 4: chic and Pinterest-y.
- 16:55Speaker 2: As I would want. Oh, my God.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I know.
- 17:00Speaker 2: That is amazing. Honestly, hats off to the person who
- 17:06Speaker 2: shared that. So good.
- 17:07Speaker 1: I saw it on Tikitoki. I can't remember the username.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I'll try to find it so I can make sure
- 17:11Speaker 1: I credit them in the show notes.
- 17:12Speaker 2: But I was like.
- 17:14Speaker 3: What's it like being the best?
- 17:16Speaker 2: Yeah, honestly doing God's work. Doing God's work. Thank you
- 17:18Speaker 2: so much.
- 17:19Speaker 1: And then also in settings, you can turn off AI mode.
- 17:24Speaker 1: So that way you're getting more things. Cause also with
- 17:27Speaker 1: like book stuff, like I'll try to find things for
- 17:30Speaker 1: overlays for like book art.
- 17:31Speaker 2: And I really, really try to prioritize like.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Non AI artwork.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Yeah. Um, But fuck me, sometimes I just can't tell.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's really hard to tell. It's really hard to tell sometimes.
- 17:41Speaker 4: So, like, that tool, being able to turn it off
- 17:43Speaker 4: is so helpful because I'm like, oh, thank goodness. Yeah,
- 17:45Speaker 4: and I think we've talked about this before, but, like,
- 17:47Speaker 4: finding inspiration to take to the hairdressers because you'll show
- 17:51Speaker 4: up and be like, I really want to achieve this color.
- 17:53Speaker 2: And they're like, mama, that's AI. Like, mama. You didn't
- 17:59Speaker 2: even need me for the joke. No, I didn't.
- 18:01Speaker 4: But yeah, it's like, and you can turn it off
- 18:04Speaker 4: by categories as well, I believe. Yeah.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Which is helpful. But yeah, that's my favorite thing. That
- 18:10Speaker 2: is a solid favorite. I like that. Okay. Next. Next.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Okay. My next August favorite is a couple of posts
- 18:19Speaker 4: that I've seen around how long it takes to become friends.
- 18:24Speaker 1: I know. I know.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So apparently to be. Like are we friends? Well, we'll
- 18:30Speaker 2: find out.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Shit.
- 18:32Speaker 4: So how long does it take to become friends? A
- 18:36Speaker 4: casual friend, 50 hours.
- 18:37Speaker 2: A friend. 50.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 2: 50. Yeah.
- 18:42Speaker 1: 50.
- 18:42Speaker 2: I know.
- 18:44Speaker 1: What?
- 18:44Speaker 2: Do we even know each other? I don't know. How
- 18:46Speaker 2: many days? That's two days, Alex. You're like, how many
- 18:55Speaker 2: years is that?
- 18:59Speaker 1: Okay, so a casual friend, 50 hours.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Yeah. Then a friend, 90 hours. A close friend is
- 19:07Speaker 4: 200 plus hours. So the 200 hour plus mark is
- 19:14Speaker 4: where data showed people stopped describing someone as a friend
- 19:17Speaker 4: and started calling them a close friend.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, and interestingly... We're like really, really, really, really,
- 19:24Speaker 2: really close. Yeah, we are as close as close can be.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I wonder how many hours we have been friends. Spent together.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Fucking a lot.
- 19:32Speaker 1: A lot.
- 19:33Speaker 2: The only thing that does not exist.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Literally, you were getting out of my car this week
- 19:36Speaker 1: and we were saying bye and I was like, well,
- 19:38Speaker 1: see you tomorrow.
- 19:39Speaker 2: I'll see you in eight hours. See you again. Yeah, literally.
- 19:44Speaker 4: But yeah, what was also really interesting is that just
- 19:47Speaker 4: as important as the amount of time spent together.
- 19:49Speaker 2: was the type of interaction. Huh?
- 19:52Speaker 4: And they were saying that repeated unstructured time together was
- 19:57Speaker 4: the key to solid friendships.
- 19:58Speaker 3: So like just hanging.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Just hanging. Just hanging. Just hanging. Just hanging. It's the
- 20:04Speaker 2: key to a good friendship. I agree.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Yeah. So in this 2018 study- they found that more
- 20:10Speaker 4: time hanging out together with no agenda predicted higher closeness,
- 20:14Speaker 4: while more time forced together, like at work or in class,
- 20:18Speaker 4: predicted lower closeness.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Wow.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, that makes sense because when you're hanging out,
- 20:25Speaker 1: it's a choice versus when you're at work or you're
- 20:27Speaker 1: at school or whatever.
- 20:28Speaker 3: It's like, well, both of you might as well be friends.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:33Speaker 4: But I thought that was interesting in conjunction with, that
- 20:36Speaker 4: data around how many hours you'd spend together because maybe
- 20:39Speaker 4: you'd be like, oh, well, you know, we go and
- 20:41Speaker 4: do this gym.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Class together every week. So, like, that's enough for our friendship.
- 20:44Speaker 2: But I was like, ooh.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Because I also saw this post from Ashy Branding and
- 20:49Speaker 4: she was saying that spontaneity is the new status symbol.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Ooh.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Do you know what?
- 20:55Speaker 3: Love that.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Honestly. Love that. Love that. Throwback to our chic episode.
- 20:59Speaker 3: I think that spontaneity is incredibly chic.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:04Speaker 4: And she quoted anthropologist Robin Dunbar said that the strongest
- 21:08Speaker 4: predictor of close friendships and community isn't how much you
- 21:10Speaker 4: like someone, but how much you saw them spontaneously, which
- 21:13Speaker 4: I think supports the research that we saw.
- 21:16Speaker 1: The best hangouts, the best nights, the best moments. vibes
- 21:23Speaker 1: are the ones that were never planned yes the best
- 21:27Speaker 1: stories of being like do you remember that night we
- 21:30Speaker 1: tackled a crocodile in the sewer and met a drag
- 21:32Speaker 1: queen and worked behind a bar for an evening i
- 21:34Speaker 1: don't know i have transatlantic accent but like those are
- 21:37Speaker 1: the best.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Nights yeah and you can't plan them you can't schedule
- 21:42Speaker 4: them in and i think that is part of the
- 21:44Speaker 4: magic of like those really funny bond forming moments that
- 21:49Speaker 4: you have with friends and we need that more and
- 21:52Speaker 4: I think it was interesting in this post when she
- 21:54Speaker 4: was talking about spontaneity being the new luxury because so
- 21:57Speaker 4: many of us are really time poor now and also
- 22:00Speaker 4: like being spontaneous can sometimes come at a higher cost.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Yeah and I also think like we.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Being spontaneous can also be a bit intimidating and it
- 22:11Speaker 1: can feel like a bit of work. Like, should we go, like,
- 22:14Speaker 1: for example, the other week and I went down and
- 22:16Speaker 1: saw my friend in Melbourne and we're.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Like, should we go to a show tonight?
- 22:20Speaker 1: Should we go?
- 22:21Speaker 2: And it's like, oh, do they have tickets? Like, normally
- 22:25Speaker 2: it'd be like, oh, like, do we got to buy
- 22:26Speaker 2: the tickets? Where would we go for dinner?
- 22:28Speaker 3: And like, you just start being an old boring bitch.
- 22:31Speaker 2: But it was like, yeah, let's go.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And it was just so fun because it's like, it
- 22:34Speaker 1: wasn't like it was planned six months in advance that
- 22:37Speaker 1: we'll go, I'll fly down to Melbourne.
- 22:39Speaker 2: We'll go see Sixth Musical, blah, blah, blah.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I think I booked tickets that week on the Wednesday,
- 22:44Speaker 1: literally went down, saw a musical.
- 22:46Speaker 2: We just hung out and it was so fun. Yeah.
- 22:49Speaker 2: And we need to do more of it.
- 22:51Speaker 4: And researchers found that Gen Z are impulsively socializing less
- 22:55Speaker 4: than previous generations. Mm-hmm. Because for them, spontaneity is financially
- 23:01Speaker 4: and socially expensive.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Like the idea of somebody, like a friend, like knocking
- 23:06Speaker 4: on your door and being like, hey, like I was
- 23:07Speaker 4: in the neighborhood.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Can I come in? Like, let's, you know, I brought
- 23:11Speaker 2: your coffee. That's what I'm saying. You would hate that.
- 23:15Speaker 2: I would hate that personally.
- 23:16Speaker 3: You would hate that.
- 23:17Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 23:17Speaker 3: If I knocked on your door, I know exactly what
- 23:20Speaker 3: your face would look like.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You'd be like. But that's what I mean. I'm like,
- 23:24Speaker 2: maybe that's a problem.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Like maybe we need to break against that feeling of
- 23:28Speaker 4: being uncomfortable and, or even just like the idea of
- 23:32Speaker 4: somebody messaging me being like, Hey, do you want to.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Go out tonight?
- 23:35Speaker 1: I would be like, Oh my God, I haven't had
- 23:38Speaker 1: five to seven business days.
- 23:40Speaker 4: To process this. But also it's like, what's the worst
- 23:43Speaker 4: that could happen for me personally, if I do that?
- 23:46Speaker 2: That's why I feel.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Like we're good for each other because I feel like
- 23:49Speaker 1: you're a planned person, which I need, and I'm quite like,
- 23:54Speaker 1: fuck it.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Let's do this.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Why don't we go do that?
- 23:57Speaker 1: Let's fly to Antarctica tomorrow. But I think that's also
- 24:03Speaker 1: good in friendships to have that balance. Not everything can
- 24:06Speaker 1: be spontaneous as well. All good things come in moderation.
- 24:09Speaker 4: Wow.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Wow.
- 24:11Speaker 2: So wise.
- 24:11Speaker 3: I'm an old man.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I'm so old. Wow.
- 24:14Speaker 4: No, but I think that that is definitely a good point.
- 24:16Speaker 4: But yeah, not enough of us embrace or accept spontaneity.
- 24:21Speaker 4: And especially in friendships, then it becomes so dependent on
- 24:25Speaker 4: scheduled contact and calendars and booking things in.
- 24:29Speaker 2: And that can be really hard to do.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:32Speaker 4: It's like you're constantly trying to find the time to
- 24:35Speaker 4: fit in your friends instead of like maybe the reverse.
- 24:38Speaker 2: And even just being like, hey, I'm free now. What
- 24:39Speaker 2: are you doing?
- 24:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I think both have like a good strong place.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Yeah, good strong place.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Good strong place.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Well, speaking of spontaneity, that kind of is on a
- 24:58Speaker 1: similar van to My Last Favourite.
- 25:01Speaker 2: And it is to do a book crawl.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Ooh.
- 25:06Speaker 2: So you could do this with anything.
- 25:08Speaker 1: But the other week, I'd had just a bit of
- 25:12Speaker 1: a week, and I'd just been a bit of a
- 25:13Speaker 1: mopey bitch. And my boyfriend, literally the epitome of if
- 25:20Speaker 1: you wanted to, he would, planned a secondhand book crawl
- 25:25Speaker 1: for me.
- 25:26Speaker 2: And we basically... planned.
- 25:29Speaker 1: All these little spots that had all these shops and
- 25:32Speaker 1: a walk that were all these secondhand bookstores to go
- 25:36Speaker 1: to like the markets two secondhand bookstores then we went
- 25:39Speaker 1: to a different suburb got lunch and then went to
- 25:41Speaker 1: two more secondhand bookstores yeah and it was just the
- 25:44Speaker 1: best day ever but we ended up making like a
- 25:48Speaker 1: book crawl challenge oh what was the challenge so You
- 25:52Speaker 1: had to find certain types of books and you got points.
- 25:56Speaker 2: Fun. But you had to still like the books.
- 25:59Speaker 1: And want to read the books because otherwise you're just
- 26:00Speaker 1: buying books for the sake of buying books.
- 26:02Speaker 2: And they'll just sit on a fucking shelf. Yeah.
- 26:04Speaker 1: So for five points, a book that you already wanted
- 26:07Speaker 1: to read, a book you think the other person would like.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Ten points was a special edition or it had a
- 26:13Speaker 1: library stamp in it or a school stamp in it.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Cute.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Then for 20 points, it was annotated. For 25 points,
- 26:23Speaker 1: it was signed by the author within the last 10 years.
- 26:29Speaker 1: But then for 50 points, it was signed by the
- 26:31Speaker 1: author in over 10 years.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Oh, cool.
- 26:33Speaker 1: And then Rob found a fucking book that was from
- 26:36Speaker 1: 1938 and it was signed by the author.
- 26:38Speaker 2: And I was like, no way. But it was so cool. Oh,
- 26:42Speaker 2: and the other one was like first editions. But you
- 26:44Speaker 2: can basically make it up to be whatever you want.
- 26:47Speaker 1: But if you're in Sydney, it was like, So easy
- 26:50Speaker 1: doing it. We did it around Glebe and then Newtown
- 26:53Speaker 1: and I can put like a list of the shops
- 26:55Speaker 1: that we went to if you're in Sydney.
- 26:56Speaker 2: But you could very easily do it wherever you live.
- 27:00Speaker 1: And it was just the funnest Saturday I've had in
- 27:03Speaker 1: like such a long time because it was just such
- 27:07Speaker 1: a different thing to do and it was very being a.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Tourist in my own city.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:12Speaker 2: It very much felt like that and it was such a.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Intentional day of fun.
- 27:18Speaker 1: And that's why it's my favorite of the month that
- 27:20Speaker 1: I know that like, yeah, sure. Maybe not everyone wants
- 27:23Speaker 1: to go do a secondhand book crawl, but it was
- 27:26Speaker 1: about planning some intentional day on your Saturday and that
- 27:30Speaker 1: is just for.
- 27:31Speaker 3: A fun activity.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Yeah. And, you know, that wasn't around going into the pub,
- 27:36Speaker 1: which love that too.
- 27:38Speaker 2: You can finish there if you want.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Start there, finish there, pub crawl.
- 27:42Speaker 1: But it was just such a fun day and we
- 27:44Speaker 1: just ended up with all these books. We saw a
- 27:47Speaker 1: cat in one.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Of the bookstores. Was that in Urchin's bookstore? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:53Speaker 1: And, yeah, it was just such a nice intentional day that,
- 27:56Speaker 1: Like we need to do that with our weekends a
- 27:58Speaker 1: little bit more because as well, we end up fucking
- 28:02Speaker 1: breaking our back Monday to Friday. That's Saturday and Sunday.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, yeah, I just want to lay down.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Close the blinds.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I want to lay down, which fair and has its
- 28:11Speaker 3: time and place.
- 28:13Speaker 2: But.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just the best and I had such
- 28:15Speaker 1: a nice day and it was such a nice thing
- 28:18Speaker 1: to do like with him as well.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so cute.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Like what a wholesome activity, also relatively low cost.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Shopping at secondhand bookstores. Seriously, all the books were
- 28:28Speaker 2: like $ 4. Yeah. It was so cheap, so affordable. Yeah. No,
- 28:32Speaker 2: I love that.
- 28:33Speaker 4: Also, secondhand bookstores are the best for really beautiful coffee
- 28:37Speaker 4: table books.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Like coffee table books are so fucking expensive, but we
- 28:42Speaker 4: love them.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Well, I know I do. And so I often try
- 28:45Speaker 2: and get mine from secondhand ones.
- 28:47Speaker 3: But yeah, it was so cool.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Aw, I loved that. Very cutie.
- 28:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 28:53Speaker 2: My last favorite. Hit me. Hit me. My last favorite
- 28:57Speaker 2: is a new documentary.
- 28:59Speaker 4: And it's the Travis Barker Louder Than Fear documentary that
- 29:03Speaker 4: just dropped on Disney +.
- 29:04Speaker 2: Have you seen this?
- 29:05Speaker 1: Nope. So.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yeah, dropped like last week.
- 29:09Speaker 4: But for anybody who doesn't know, Travis Barker is the
- 29:11Speaker 4: drummer from Blink-182. He's also married to Kourtney Kardashian. And,
- 29:17Speaker 4: you know, like he's a very famous individual. He's been
- 29:20Speaker 4: in like pop culture for.
- 29:21Speaker 2: The last 30 years or something.
- 29:24Speaker 4: I think a lot of people know him, but he
- 29:26Speaker 4: does have a lot of mystery around him.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Does he?
- 29:28Speaker 4: Yeah, he's not like the loudest person in the room.
- 29:31Speaker 4: If you go to a Blink-182 show, it's like Mark
- 29:33Speaker 4: and Tom talking absolute shit the whole show, which is
- 29:36Speaker 4: the best.
- 29:37Speaker 2: But then Travis does not say a word basically at
- 29:40Speaker 2: all during the show. But he has a really interesting story.
- 29:45Speaker 4: And what I enjoyed about the documentary, I am a
- 29:47Speaker 4: fan of the band, so I do think that I have.
- 29:49Speaker 2: A bias there.
- 29:50Speaker 4: But I do think it would be interesting for a
- 29:52Speaker 4: lot of people to to watch because they filmed the
- 29:54Speaker 4: documentary over like 10 years.
- 29:56Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:57Speaker 2: So there was footage from, I think they started filming
- 29:59Speaker 2: in 2017.
- 29:59Speaker 4: Wow.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Which is also fascinating because I was like, ooh, like
- 30:06Speaker 4: seeing him even like pre-Kourtney Kardashian.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Pre-Kardashian. And how much he's changed even since then.
- 30:12Speaker 1: But.
- 30:13Speaker 4: He, like, grew up in America, not very well off and,
- 30:18Speaker 4: you know, started off when he was in his 20s as, like,
- 30:21Speaker 4: a garbage man and was really, really determined to join
- 30:25Speaker 4: a band and become successful in music. And he's, like,
- 30:28Speaker 4: one of the most successful people in music today. And
- 30:31Speaker 4: so it was really interesting even just from that, like,
- 30:33Speaker 4: the Rags to Riches story is always fascinating. But he
- 30:37Speaker 4: was also in a plane crash in 2008.
- 30:40Speaker 2: Have you heard of this? Yes, I do know about this.
- 30:41Speaker 4: Yeah, and he was– he was getting in like a
- 30:45Speaker 4: private jet and yeah, they had this horrible plane crash.
- 30:51Speaker 2: And I think it was.
- 30:52Speaker 4: Four of his close friends, including like his assistant and bodyguard,
- 30:56Speaker 4: but people that he'd worked with and been friends with for,
- 30:58Speaker 4: you know, a decade or more all died. And then
- 31:02Speaker 4: him and one other person on the plane survived. And
- 31:05Speaker 4: as a result of that, he had like a lot
- 31:07Speaker 4: of post-traumatic stress from.
- 31:11Speaker 2: That and had a lot of trauma from, that whole experience.
- 31:14Speaker 4: And, you know, like he thought at one point he'd
- 31:16Speaker 4: never be able to drum again, let alone like walk
- 31:18Speaker 4: again or, and then all the, all of the survivor's
- 31:21Speaker 4: guilt that he had around that, like losing his friends.
- 31:23Speaker 4: And he's like, why am I still here? And then
- 31:26Speaker 4: he also had a lot of addiction issues.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Prior to that too.
- 31:30Speaker 4: So it's, it's an interesting story that I think a
- 31:32Speaker 4: lot of people would think that it's like sex, drugs,
- 31:34Speaker 4: rock and roll, but really it's a story about perseverance
- 31:38Speaker 4: and sobriety and and going through trauma and like he
- 31:42Speaker 4: thought that he would never get on a plane ever
- 31:43Speaker 4: again like I remember for a while there whenever Blink
- 31:47Speaker 4: would come down they like he was never there they'd
- 31:50Speaker 4: always have to have like a different touring drummer because
- 31:52Speaker 4: when he was touring to places in Europe he would
- 31:55Speaker 4: go on a 10-day cruise to get to the places
- 31:58Speaker 4: because he just like.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Wouldn't even fathom getting on a plane which like Which
- 32:02Speaker 2: is so understandable.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Yeah, and so it was interesting when he was talking
- 32:08Speaker 4: about that as well because Kourtney Kardashian is actually a
- 32:11Speaker 4: huge reason why he was able to get over that
- 32:14Speaker 4: and get on a plane again. And they even spoke
- 32:18Speaker 4: about their issues with fertility. And I didn't realize this,
- 32:23Speaker 4: but Kourtney Kardashian had had a miscarriage with him. I
- 32:27Speaker 4: think maybe six months into their relationship, they lost a baby.
- 32:31Speaker 4: which I don't know if that was, had been made
- 32:35Speaker 4: public prior to the documentary. Um, but like that was
- 32:39Speaker 4: really eyeopening as well. And like seeing how they obviously
- 32:42Speaker 4: connected even further based on like that, um, shared trauma
- 32:46Speaker 4: that they had together. And, you know, like, I think
- 32:48Speaker 4: a lot of people were really excited when they announced
- 32:51Speaker 4: that they were having a baby a few years ago,
- 32:53Speaker 4: but then learning that too, I'm like, that's just so nice.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Like that all of the, issues that they both have
- 32:59Speaker 2: and then they found each other.
- 33:00Speaker 4: I think a lot of people find them very divisive
- 33:02Speaker 4: as a couple, which I understand if, you know, PDA
- 33:05Speaker 4: isn't your cup of tea. But I think, yeah, watching
- 33:10Speaker 4: that kind of showed me that other side of their
- 33:12Speaker 4: relationship and I just thought it was really interesting. Includes
- 33:15Speaker 4: like a lot of cool interviews from obviously the other
- 33:18Speaker 4: members of Blink, but also then like a bunch of
- 33:21Speaker 4: other iconic drummers throughout history, which was really cool as well.
- 33:24Speaker 2: And it's only like 90 minutes too. Yeah, it sounds incredible. Yeah,
- 33:28Speaker 2: definitely recommend. Put on the watch list for the weekend. Yes, yes. Oh, well.
- 33:32Speaker 4: I think that's a wrap for our August favourites. As always,
- 33:36Speaker 4: let us know what you chicks have been enjoying this month.
- 33:39Speaker 2: We always love to get another wreck. And thanks for
- 33:42Speaker 2: having us in your ear holes.
- 33:43Speaker 1: We love to be here.
- 33:44Speaker 4: Bye. Bye. Bye.
