- 0:41Speaker 1: Jim Moser wrote this case from the series that drew
- 0:44Speaker 1: its stories from official police files with technical advice from
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Police Department. And now, we return to
- 0:52Speaker 1: the original broadcast.

- 1:32Speaker 3: They're armed. They've boasted they won't be taken alive. Your job?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Get them.
- 1:40Speaker 4: In Fatima, the difference is quality. Yes, in Fatima, the
- 1:45Speaker 4: difference is quality. Prove it yourself today. Compare Fatima with
- 1:50Speaker 4: any other king-size cigarette.
- 1:52Speaker 5: One.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Fatima's length filters the smoke 85 millimeters for your protection. Two,

- 2:10Speaker 4: and soothing smoke, plus the added protection of Fatima quality.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Definitely the best quality in its class, but the same
- 2:18Speaker 4: price as the cigarette you're now smoking. by Fatima in
- 2:22Speaker 4: the bright, sunny yellow pack. Best of all, king-size cigarettes. Dragnet,
- 2:34Speaker 4: the documented drama of an actual crime. For the next
- 2:37Speaker 4: 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:41Speaker 4: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 2:43Speaker 4: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 2:47Speaker 4: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 2:51Speaker 4: the story of your police force in action.
- 2:58Speaker 6: It was Wednesday, October 6th. It was cloudy in Los Angeles.
- 3:01Speaker 5: We were working the day watch out of robbery detail.
- 3:03Speaker 5: My partner's Ed Jacobs. The boss is Captain Didion. My
- 3:06Speaker 5: name's Friday. We were on the way out from the
- 3:08Speaker 5: office and it was 2.40 p.m. when we got to
- 3:10Speaker 5: Kesterson Boulevard. Number 1256.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Sounds like she's having a party, huh? Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 6: Try it again, huh? Maybe they can't hear it.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yes?
- 3:23Speaker 6: Police officers, ma'am. You Ruth Thompson?
- 3:24Speaker 7: Yes, that's right.
- 3:25Speaker 8: What is it?
- 3:25Speaker 5: My name's Friday. This is my partner, Sergeant Jacobs. Central robbery.
- 3:28Speaker 5: We'd like to talk to you a few minutes if
- 3:29Speaker 5: we could.
- 3:29Speaker 7: Well, I have a party going on right now. A
- 3:31Speaker 7: few of my friends are over. What'd you want, Sergeant?
- 3:33Speaker 3: It's about an Andy Powell, Miss Thompson. I understand you
- 3:35Speaker 3: know him?
- 3:36Speaker 7: I did know him, yes. I haven't seen him for
- 3:37Speaker 7: a long time. Three or four years anyway.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Mind if we ask a few questions about him? It
- 3:41Speaker 3: won't take long.
- 3:42Speaker 7: All right. Come in, please.
- 3:43Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 3:45Speaker 5: We're sorry to disturb you, ma'am. It's pretty important or
- 3:48Speaker 5: we wouldn't hold you up.
- 3:49Speaker 7: It's all right. Down the hall here.
- 3:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:51Speaker 7: We can talk in the kitchen if you don't mind.
- 3:53Speaker 7: It's my girlfriend's birthday today, so I'd be nice to
- 3:55Speaker 7: have a little party for her.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Oh, I see.
- 4:00Speaker 7: Chair there, if you like. Oh, here, let me wipe
- 4:01Speaker 7: it off. He spilled a drink on her. Probably Danny.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I suppose you know about Andy Powell, Miss Thompson, what
- 4:07Speaker 3: happened this morning?
- 4:08Speaker 7: What's that?
- 4:08Speaker 3: About Andy Powell. You heard what happened this morning?
- 4:10Speaker 7: Just what I read in the morning paper. They said
- 4:12Speaker 7: he broke out of San Quentin, another man with him. True, then?
- 4:16Speaker 7: He did break out?
- 4:17Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am. That's the information we have. There's an all-points
- 4:19Speaker 6: bulletin out on him.
- 4:20Speaker 7: Well, I don't want to get involved in it. It's
- 4:21Speaker 7: none of my business, and he doesn't mean anything to me.
- 4:23Speaker 6: Well, at the time he was set up, you were
- 4:25Speaker 6: engaged to Powell.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 4:27Speaker 7: Yes, but that was before he got into trouble, before
- 4:29Speaker 7: he went to San Quentin. I saw him after the trial.
- 4:31Speaker 7: I told him how I felt about it. I told
- 4:33Speaker 7: him it wasn't any use.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And you called it off, that is?
- 4:35Speaker 7: Wasn't much else to do. It was robbery, five years
- 4:37Speaker 7: to life. It wasn't the first time, either. Andy knew
- 4:40Speaker 7: it'd be a long time, so die. Really, I had
- 4:42Speaker 7: to tell him. I had to call it off.
- 4:44Speaker 5: We understand you were on Powell's correspondence list while he
- 4:46Speaker 5: was up at Quentin.
- 4:47Speaker 3: You wrote to him, did you?
- 4:48Speaker 7: Yes, the first couple of months. We haven't written lately, though.
- 4:50Speaker 7: There wasn't any point to it. No point at all.
- 4:53Speaker 6: Well, when was the last time you heard from Powell,
- 4:54Speaker 6: Miss Thompson? The last time you wrote to him?
- 4:56Speaker 7: Oh, eight or ten months. At least that. As I say,
- 4:59Speaker 7: there wasn't much sense in going on. Andy knew he
- 5:01Speaker 7: was in there for a long time. He couldn't expect
- 5:04Speaker 7: me to wait all that time. Matter of fact, he
- 5:06Speaker 7: said he didn't expect it. He told me that.
- 5:08Speaker 3: You been up to visit Powell recently, Miss Thompson?
- 5:10Speaker 7: No, no, I haven't.
- 5:11Speaker 6: Well, then you haven't seen him since he went up
- 5:12Speaker 6: to Quentin. You'll swear to that?
- 5:14Speaker 7: Why do I have to swear to it? I already
- 5:15Speaker 7: told you, Andy doesn't mean anything to me. It didn't
- 5:17Speaker 7: make sense.
- 5:18Speaker 6: It's all over.
- 5:19Speaker 7: I'm not even a relative. Why do I have to
- 5:21Speaker 7: swear to anything?
- 5:21Speaker 3: You haven't seen Powell since he went up to Quentin,
- 5:23Speaker 3: is that right?
- 5:25Speaker 6: Miss Thompson, is that right?
- 5:27Speaker 7: What if I saw him or if I didn't see him?
- 5:28Speaker 7: What difference does it make? It's none of my business.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Well, did you see him, Miss Thompson?
- 5:31Speaker 7: What difference does it make? I don't have anything to
- 5:34Speaker 7: do with him. He doesn't mean anything to me. I
- 5:35Speaker 7: told you.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Did you see him?
- 5:39Speaker 7: This morning.
- 5:39Speaker 3: When?
- 5:40Speaker 7: Late this morning, about 10.30.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Was he alone?
- 5:42Speaker 7: No, another man was with him.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Who was the other man? You recognize him?
- 5:45Speaker 7: Bert Selby. That's the way he introduced him. He didn't
- 5:47Speaker 7: try to hide it. Some fellow he broke out of
- 5:49Speaker 7: jail with.
- 5:49Speaker 6: What'd they want? Why were they here?
- 5:51Speaker 7: Clothes, money. Looked like the devil. Both of them terrible.
- 5:54Speaker 6: What'd you give them?
- 5:55Speaker 7: They asked for him, not that silly. He didn't trust
- 5:58Speaker 7: me anymore and they trust you. And he had a knife.
- 6:00Speaker 7: I tried to tell him I didn't have any money.
- 6:02Speaker 7: He didn't believe me. He came at me with that knife.
- 6:04Speaker 7: I gave him the money.
- 6:05Speaker 3: How much?
- 6:06Speaker 7: About $ 17, $ 18, some loose change. They emptied my purse.
- 6:09Speaker 7: They took it all.
- 6:10Speaker 6: Anything else?
- 6:11Speaker 7: Clothes, a couple of suits of my father's. He died
- 6:13Speaker 7: last year. They took his gun, too. I never thought
- 6:16Speaker 7: Andy would be that way. It was terrible.
- 6:17Speaker 3: What kind of a gun was it, Ms. Thompson?
- 6:19Speaker 7: Colt revolver, 38, I think. They took that and the
- 6:22Speaker 7: clothes and the money. It was about 10.30 this morning.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Malcolm, you didn't report that. You say you knew about
- 6:26Speaker 5: the escape. You knew they were wanted, didn't you?
- 6:28Speaker 8: Why should I?
- 6:29Speaker 7: They warned me about it. They threatened me. They said
- 6:31Speaker 7: they'd come back and get me if I told the police. Look,
- 6:34Speaker 7: I don't want to get mixed up in this. I'm
- 6:36Speaker 7: engaged to a nice fella now. We want to get married.
- 6:38Speaker 7: I don't want to get mixed up in this. Andy
- 6:40Speaker 7: Powell's nothing to me.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Did you watch the two men when they left the
- 6:42Speaker 3: house here? You notice if they drove off in a car?
- 6:44Speaker 7: No, I didn't. I just shut the door and prayed
- 6:46Speaker 7: I was rid of them. Took my money, food, my
- 6:48Speaker 7: dad's clothes. Don't make it any tougher, huh?
- 6:51Speaker 5: Please. Well, it's not a question of that, ma'am. We
- 6:52Speaker 5: have to find him. We're going to need all the
- 6:54Speaker 5: cooperation we can get.
- 6:55Speaker 7: I told you everything I could, honestly. I said they'd
- 6:58Speaker 7: come back and kill me if I even talked to you.
- 7:00Speaker 7: I can't do any more. I sure hope you don't
- 7:02Speaker 7: find him.
- 7:03Speaker 3: How's that?
- 7:04Speaker 7: When Andy went out the door, it's the last thing
- 7:06Speaker 7: he said. He said if the cops ever found him,
- 7:07Speaker 7: there was going to be a fight. Terrible look on
- 7:09Speaker 7: his face. He said he'd never take him alive.
- 7:17Speaker 6: The APB had come in a few minutes before 8
- 7:19Speaker 6: o'clock that morning. It was from the warden's office, San Quentin.
- 7:23Speaker 5: The two suspects had been assigned to an early morning
- 7:25Speaker 5: work detail at the penitentiary, and they were first reported
- 7:28Speaker 5: missing at the 7 a.m.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Count.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Number one suspect was Andrew A.
- 7:32Speaker 5: Powell, WMA, 29 years, 5'9, 175 pounds, brown hair, blue eyes,
- 7:37Speaker 5: tan complexion. Suspect number two, Bertram O. Selby, WMA, 31 years, 5'11,
- 7:42Speaker 5: 160 pounds, blonde hair, gray eyes, tan complexion. Both of
- 7:48Speaker 5: them had long criminal records. Both of them had been
- 7:50Speaker 5: serving time for armed robbery. They'd used guns before. We
- 7:54Speaker 5: figured if they had to, they'd use them again. Before
- 7:57Speaker 5: we left Powell's ex-girlfriend, Ruth Thompson, we called the office
- 8:00Speaker 5: and arranged for a 24-hour stakeout on her home in
- 8:03Speaker 5: case the escaped prisoners returned. We also made arrangements for
- 8:06Speaker 5: a stakeout at the downtown restaurant where she was employed
- 8:08Speaker 5: as cashier. We passed along the information which the Thompson
- 8:12Speaker 5: girl had given us, and a broadcast and an APB
- 8:14Speaker 5: was gotten out on the suspects. 4.05 p.m. Ed and
- 8:18Speaker 5: I continued making the rounds of all unknown friends and
- 8:20Speaker 5: associates of the escaped prisoners. We failed to come up
- 8:23Speaker 5: with any more leads. 5.50 p.m. We went back to
- 8:25Speaker 5: the city hall.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Clouding up again, huh? Over there in the east?
- 8:30Speaker 6: Yeah, the paper says rain tonight and tomorrow. We can
- 8:32Speaker 6: sure use it.
- 8:33Speaker 3: No, I can't.
- 8:34Speaker 6: What's the matter?
- 8:34Speaker 3: I haven't had a chance to get the shoemakers yet.
- 8:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Look at that. Hole in my shoe. Been meaning to
- 8:41Speaker 3: get them half sold. I keep forgetting.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Yeah. Don't tell me that's the only pair of shoes
- 8:45Speaker 6: you got.
- 8:45Speaker 3: No, I got another pair at home. They're not comfortable, though.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Not broken in. It's trouble with this job.
- 8:50Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 8:50Speaker 3: Shoes. You get a new pair, start wearing them around.
- 8:52Speaker 3: It happens every time. Well. No sooner get the tops
- 8:55Speaker 3: broken in than the soles wear out. It's a vicious circle.
- 8:57Speaker 6: Yeah. Hi.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Nice to work.
- 9:01Speaker 6: No, hi, Jess. Anything in the book for us you don't?
- 9:03Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't think so. I'll check it.
- 9:05Speaker 3: All right. How'd you two make out? Any luck?
- 9:08Speaker 5: Oh, not too bad, Jess. We know Powell and Selby
- 9:10Speaker 5: were in town this morning. Good chance they're still here.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Any kickback on that last all points we got out?
- 9:15Speaker 3: Nothing so far.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Gaffney and Ricketts are running down a couple of possibles
- 9:18Speaker 1: right now.
- 9:18Speaker 3: One of them might pan out. Nothing on the book, Joe.
- 9:21Speaker 3: We're clear.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Just saying, Ed, on this Powell and Selby thing, got
- 9:24Speaker 1: a couple of possibles we're checking on. Both calls came
- 9:26Speaker 1: in the last hour. One was a holdup, Olympic near Vermont.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Pawn shop there. Two men pulled it off, slugged the owner,
- 9:32Speaker 1: took clothes, money.
- 9:33Speaker 3: 12-gauge shotgun.
- 9:34Speaker 6: How about descriptions on them, Ed?
- 9:36Speaker 3: Well, they seem to be fairly close. When I got
- 9:37Speaker 3: over the phone, Gaffney.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And Ricketts are out talking to the victim. They took
- 9:40Speaker 1: mugs of Powell and Selby along, waiting for their call
- 9:43Speaker 1: back now.
- 9:43Speaker 3: You said you had two calls. What was the other one?
- 9:46Speaker 1: 211 and Slugging out on Hollywood Boulevard, just above Western.
- 9:48Speaker 1: A couple of thieves knocked over a dry goods store.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Some take. Clothes and money. Descriptions are pretty close there, too.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Hollywood division's covering. Waiting for their call back.
- 9:58Speaker 8: Do you want a smoke?
- 9:59Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks. Thanks.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Thompson girl's the only one who had anything, huh? None
- 10:11Speaker 1: of the others could help you out? Yeah, that's about
- 10:12Speaker 1: the size of it. Apparently Powell doesn't have too many
- 10:15Speaker 1: connections in town. Selby has even less. No more than
- 10:18Speaker 1: a dozen names on that list, were there, Joe?
- 10:19Speaker 3: Friends, relatives?
- 10:20Speaker 6: An even dozen. A couple of bars Powell was known
- 10:22Speaker 6: to hang out when he was in town. Checked them out, too.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Nothing.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Well, they sure made a beeline here after they broke Quentin.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It's a good 500-mile stretch. They don't have the connections
- 10:31Speaker 1: here to help them, then what's the big attraction?
- 10:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 3: They could have some help lined up we don't know about.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Somebody to hide them out, keep them in groceries for
- 10:37Speaker 3: a while.
- 10:38Speaker 5: It's possible they're making a run for one of the
- 10:40Speaker 5: border towns, Tijuana, Mexicali. Maybe Powell figured on more help
- 10:43Speaker 5: from the Thompson girl.
- 10:44Speaker 6: Clothes and money. Enough to get him and Selby over
- 10:46Speaker 6: into Mexico, huh?
- 10:47Speaker 3: She said all they got was $ 17. Had to cut
- 10:49Speaker 3: corners to make it on that. Robbery, Gonzalez. Oh, yeah, Jack. Mm-hmm.
- 10:58Speaker 3: You sure? Sure. Okay, fine. Thanks.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Bye.
- 11:02Speaker 3: You got it. Jack Ricketts.
- 11:03Speaker 1: He and Gaffney just finished talking to the owner of
- 11:05Speaker 1: the pawn shop that was held up, the one on Olympic.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 1: They gave him a handful of mug shots to check.
- 11:10Speaker 1: He tabbed two of them, Powell and Selby.
- 11:12Speaker 6: 6.30 p.m.
- 11:18Speaker 5: A supplementary broadcast and an APB was gotten out on
- 11:20Speaker 5: the two suspects, and the record bureau's photocopy room turned
- 11:23Speaker 5: out 2,000 copies of Powell's and Selby's mug shot for distribution.
- 11:28Speaker 5: At 9 p.m., a theater on Western Avenue was robbed
- 11:31Speaker 5: of $ 192. Powell and Selby were again identified as the
- 11:35Speaker 5: holdup men. The robbery victim, the manager of the theater,
- 11:38Speaker 5: said that both men were armed, one with a. 38 revolver,
- 11:41Speaker 5: the other with a sawed-off shotgun. Neither the manager nor
- 11:44Speaker 5: the two witnesses were able to tell us how the
- 11:46Speaker 5: thieves got away from the scene of the crime, if
- 11:48Speaker 5: they were on foot or if they had a car.
- 11:50Speaker 7: 11.20 p.m.
- 11:53Speaker 5: A hot shot call came through on a holdup at
- 11:54Speaker 5: a liquor store in Delicatessen down on South Central Avenue.
- 11:58Speaker 5: For the third time that night, Powell and Selby were
- 12:00Speaker 5: identified from their mug shots as the holdup men. They'd
- 12:03Speaker 5: used the same weapons, the revolver that they'd taken from
- 12:06Speaker 5: the Thompson girls' home, and the shotgun that they picked
- 12:08Speaker 5: up in the robbery of the Olympic Boulevard pawn shop. Again,
- 12:12Speaker 5: the victims were unable to tell us how the suspects
- 12:14Speaker 5: got away, whether on foot or by car. Midnight, 1 a.m.,
- 12:19Speaker 5: there were still no replies to supplementary broadcasts and bulletins
- 12:21Speaker 5: which had been gotten out. 1.25 a.m., another hotshot call
- 12:26Speaker 5: came through, this time on a holdup in a slugging
- 12:28Speaker 5: at the 2050 room, a small nightclub on West 9th Street.
- 12:32Speaker 6: Ed and I handled the call.
- 12:34Speaker 5: For the fourth time, the bandits were identified as Powell
- 12:36Speaker 5: and Selby, and for the fourth time, they'd made good
- 12:38Speaker 5: their escape. We interviewed the manager of the 2050 room,
- 12:41Speaker 5: a Herman Saunders.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Quite a few people in here at the time of
- 12:45Speaker 3: the holdup, Mr.
- 12:46Speaker 8: Saunders?
- 12:47Speaker 1: Yeah, good for Thursday night. 30 or 40 anyway. They
- 12:49Speaker 1: sure left in a hurry. This is the second time
- 12:51Speaker 1: this year we've been knocked over. Insurance company isn't going
- 12:53Speaker 1: to like it too much.
- 12:54Speaker 6: How much money did they take altogether, do you know?
- 12:56Speaker 1: A little less than 600 from the cash register. Mostly currency.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Some rolls, a dime, some quarters. Got another hundred and
- 13:01Speaker 1: a half from my wallet. That's about it. They didn't
- 13:03Speaker 1: take anything from the customers.
- 13:04Speaker 6: You're sure about that identification, are you? There's no chance
- 13:06Speaker 6: of a mistake there?
- 13:07Speaker 8: I'm positive.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I'd know Andy Paul anywhere. I should know him. Like
- 13:09Speaker 1: I told you, he worked for me a year and
- 13:11Speaker 1: a half.
- 13:11Speaker 3: I was here at 2050? Yeah, he worked behind the bar.
- 13:14Speaker 8: Good man, too.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I don't get it at all.
- 13:15Speaker 6: You mean why it went bad?
- 13:17Speaker 8: Well, yeah, that too.
- 13:18Speaker 1: What I mean is if you're going to hold up
- 13:19Speaker 1: a place, you don't pick a joint where everybody knows you.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I spotted Andy as soon as I saw him at
- 13:23Speaker 1: the bar. Sawed a couple of the waiters. He wasn't
- 13:24Speaker 1: wearing any kind of a mask. He didn't make any
- 13:26Speaker 1: attempt to disguise himself?
- 13:27Speaker 3: No.
- 13:28Speaker 8: Stood there big as life, him and this other fella.
- 13:30Speaker 8: Didn't waste any time either.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I pulled the guns, lined up everybody in the place
- 13:33Speaker 1: and stood him against that wall over there. Real Wild
- 13:35Speaker 1: West style. Took over the whole place. Acted real wild,
- 13:38Speaker 1: Andy and.
- 13:39Speaker 8: This other fella. Must be crazy.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Nobody was hurt? Didn't slug anyone?
- 13:42Speaker 1: I slapped a few of the customers around. I thought
- 13:44Speaker 1: for a while they were really going to get rough.
- 13:45Speaker 1: They had us lined up against the wall. Andy was
- 13:47Speaker 1: acting tough. Had this knife with him, good four-inch blade.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Went right down the line jabbing people with it, threatening them.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Must be out of his mind. You say he didn't
- 13:55Speaker 1: take any money from the customers. Yeah, that's right. They
- 13:57Speaker 1: worked it pretty fast. Emptied the cash register, then my wallet,
- 14:00Speaker 1: then they beat it. Never so glad to see anybody.
- 14:01Speaker 8: Go in my life.
- 14:02Speaker 6: Well, how'd they get away? Do you have any idea
- 14:04Speaker 6: on that?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Old guy who sells papers down the corner, he says
- 14:06Speaker 1: he thinks he saw a car pull away right after
- 14:08Speaker 1: the stick-up. Said it was a blue sedan. Don't know
- 14:11Speaker 1: how much stock you can put in it. The old
- 14:12Speaker 1: man's eyes aren't what they used to be.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Do you know Paul pretty well when he was working here, Mr. Saunders?
- 14:16Speaker 3: I mean, do you know any of his friends, people
- 14:18Speaker 3: he used to run with?
- 14:18Speaker 8: No, I didn't know him that well. He worked for me,
- 14:20Speaker 8: that's all.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I still have his old address, the place he was
- 14:23Speaker 1: living when he worked for me.
- 14:24Speaker 8: I can get it if you want.
- 14:25Speaker 6: Yeah, if you would, please.
- 14:26Speaker 8: Sure, no trouble. I just don't get it. Don't get
- 14:29Speaker 8: it at all.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Of all the joints in town he could have held up,
- 14:32Speaker 1: he had to pick mine, the one place he'd be recognized.
- 14:34Speaker 8: You think he'd have better sense.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Wouldn't you? You'd think so, yeah.
- 14:37Speaker 1: How'd he ever hire a guy as dumb as that
- 14:38Speaker 1: Paul holding up the place he worked for?
- 14:40Speaker 8: Biggest mistake he ever made.
- 14:41Speaker 6: No, he made a bigger one yesterday.
- 14:43Speaker 8: Yeah, what was that?
- 14:44Speaker 6: When he broke prison.
- 14:44Speaker 1: 2.05 a.m.
- 14:50Speaker 5: Further investigation at the scene of the latest holdup failed
- 14:52Speaker 5: to turn up any new leads. While Ed and I
- 14:54Speaker 5: checked on Powell's former address, which we'd gotten from the
- 14:57Speaker 5: owner of the 2050 room, Gonzalez, Ricketts, and Gaffney continued
- 15:01Speaker 5: checking the immediate neighborhood. In addition, a special detail from
- 15:04Speaker 5: Metro Division was sent in to cover the entire area.
- 15:07Speaker 5: The suspect's former address turned out to be a rooming
- 15:10Speaker 5: house up on West Temple Street. The landlady remembered Andy Powell,
- 15:13Speaker 5: but she had no forwarding address on him, and she
- 15:15Speaker 5: could tell us nothing about his former friends and associates.
- 15:18Speaker 5: We checked back with Gonzales, Ricketts, and Gaffney, and they
- 15:21Speaker 5: told us that besides the old newspaper vendor, the counterman
- 15:24Speaker 5: at the coffee shop near the 2050 room had also
- 15:27Speaker 5: spotted a blue sedan leaving the vicinity of the nightclub
- 15:30Speaker 5: shortly after the holdup.
- 15:31Speaker 6: He was able to give them the make, the model,
- 15:33Speaker 6: and a partial license number.
- 15:36Speaker 5: A supplementary all points had been gotten out on it immediately,
- 15:38Speaker 5: and the information relayed to DMV in auto theft detail.
- 15:41Speaker 6: 3.10 a.m.
- 15:43Speaker 5: Ed and I completed our assignment in the investigation and
- 15:46Speaker 5: went back to the office to check for instructions from
- 15:48Speaker 5: Captain Didion.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Can't see how we'd be much use out on the
- 15:51Speaker 3: street the way things stand now, can you?
- 15:53Speaker 6: No, I don't.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Everything's covered, I can think of. Supplementary oil points is out.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Detail from Metro's working in the neighborhood.
- 15:58Speaker 6: It's funny, isn't it?
- 15:59Speaker 3: What's that?
- 16:00Speaker 5: Ellis Andy Powell going back to that place he used
- 16:02Speaker 5: to work and holding it up. That doesn't make any
- 16:04Speaker 5: sense at all, does it?
- 16:05Speaker 3: That's for sure. Must have known somebody was going to
- 16:07Speaker 3: recognize him. Couldn't have been a coincidence.
- 16:08Speaker 5: There's only one way I can figure it. They don't care,
- 16:10Speaker 5: either one of them. They got their money now, a car.
- 16:12Speaker 5: They both got guns. They're out to go as far
- 16:14Speaker 5: as they can.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Oh, hi, Jess.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Hi.
- 16:16Speaker 3: You just get back in? Yeah.
- 16:18Speaker 8: Hi, Joe.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Hi.
- 16:19Speaker 6: You as tired as you sound? Worse.
- 16:21Speaker 8: Fair piece of news, though.
- 16:23Speaker 6: Yeah, what's that?
- 16:23Speaker 1: Powell and Selby, they just found their hideout.
- 16:30Speaker 5: After three hours of canvassing the general downtown area, particularly
- 16:33Speaker 5: in the vicinity of the last holdup, a team of
- 16:35Speaker 5: men working with a special detail from Metropolitan Division interviewed
- 16:38Speaker 5: a desk clerk in a small hotel on South Broadway
- 16:41Speaker 5: who recognized the suspect's mugshots. The two of them had
- 16:45Speaker 5: registered early the morning before under the names J.E. Dennis
- 16:48Speaker 5: and Harold Thompson, both from Fresno, California. The hotel room
- 16:52Speaker 5: was searched and two San Quentin inmate uniforms were found
- 16:55Speaker 5: stuffed under the mattress of the bed. After the room
- 16:58Speaker 5: was processed for fingerprints, there was no doubt that the
- 17:01Speaker 5: recent occupants were Powell and Selby. The clerk had no
- 17:04Speaker 5: idea when they were supposed to return. The hotel was
- 17:07Speaker 5: staked out immediately, and the citywide search for the escaped
- 17:10Speaker 5: prisoners went on. The following day, Thursday, October 7th, 11.30 a.m.,
- 17:15Speaker 5: still no sign of the suspects, no further reports or
- 17:17Speaker 5: leads as to their whereabouts. The search went on. Ed
- 17:21Speaker 5: and I signed back in at the office. Ten minutes later,
- 17:23Speaker 5: a long-distance phone call came in for us.
- 17:26Speaker 3: When was that, Morton?
- 17:27Speaker 7: Mm-hmm.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 17:28Speaker 3: What's that? Yeah, close enough, right? We'll let you know, yeah.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Bye.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Mark Geer, down to San Diego.
- 17:35Speaker 6: Yeah, what do you want?
- 17:36Speaker 3: One of the traffic officers was checking a car about
- 17:37Speaker 3: 8 o'clock this morning, 586 parking. Mm-hmm. Blue sedan, fits
- 17:41Speaker 3: close to the description of the escape car.
- 17:43Speaker 6: Well, it's a pretty common model, isn't it? Did he
- 17:44Speaker 6: say anything else?
- 17:45Speaker 3: Traffic man checked the inside of the car, glove compartment,
- 17:48Speaker 3: found half a dozen rolls of dimes and quarters, same
- 17:50Speaker 3: name stamped on all of them. Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 5: 2050 room.

- 19:37Speaker 3: Fatima.
- 19:39Speaker 5: October 7th, Thursday, 1 p.m. After we got the report
- 19:42Speaker 5: from Lieutenant Mort Gere that the escape car, along with
- 19:44Speaker 5: a few dollars of the stolen money, had been located
- 19:46Speaker 5: in San Diego that morning, Ed and I had a
- 19:49Speaker 5: meeting with Captain didion it was beginning to look like
- 19:51Speaker 5: our first hunch was right powell and selby's 24-hour campaign
- 19:55Speaker 5: of holdups in the los angeles area had netted them
- 19:58Speaker 5: a fresh change of clothes and more than enough money
- 20:00Speaker 5: to live on for a while With the locating of
- 20:02Speaker 5: the escape car in San Diego, it looked like the
- 20:04Speaker 5: suspects were apparently taking the next logical step. A fast
- 20:08Speaker 5: move over the international border into Mexico. A distance of
- 20:12Speaker 5: less than 20 miles from San Diego. Probably, they figured
- 20:15Speaker 5: once over the line, they had a good chance of
- 20:17Speaker 5: losing themselves. 1.40 p.m. On Captain Didion's orders, Jess Gonzalez, Ed,
- 20:22Speaker 5: and I got in the car and headed south for
- 20:24Speaker 5: San Diego with a supply of mug shots of the
- 20:26Speaker 5: escaped prisoners. We got there a few minutes after 4 p.m.
- 20:30Speaker 5: We went directly to the San Diego PD where we
- 20:32Speaker 5: contacted Sergeant Tony McGuire, robbery detail.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Tough week, huh?
- 20:35Speaker 6: I hear they've been driving you crazy up there.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Just about, Tony. Four robberies in 24 hours, giving us
- 20:40Speaker 3: a run. How about Mort Gere?
- 20:41Speaker 1: You around?
- 20:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he just went down the hall, Jess.
- 20:43Speaker 6: Ought to be back in a minute.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Why don't you fellas sit down?
- 20:46Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks very much. What's the latest, Tony? Anything since
- 20:49Speaker 6: you picked up that blue sedan? No, not much.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Got the car in the impound.
- 20:53Speaker 6: Had it dusted for prints.
- 20:54Speaker 8: We made them all right, both sets.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Powell and Selby. No sign of them around town?
- 20:58Speaker 8: No, got it pretty well covered, too.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Not a trace.
- 21:00Speaker 6: Well, we're in a good spot to make it over
- 21:01Speaker 6: into Mexico. Hate to disappoint you. What do you mean?
- 21:04Speaker 3: We think they already made it.
- 21:09Speaker 5: At six o'clock that night, Gonzales, Ed, and I, together
- 21:11Speaker 5: with Lieutenant Gere, Tony McGuire, and Sergeants Gaten and Schultz,
- 21:15Speaker 5: drove south from San Diego to the International Line. We
- 21:18Speaker 5: left mug shots of Powell and Selby with the immigration
- 21:21Speaker 5: officers at the entry gate. Then we drove into the
- 21:23Speaker 5: town of Tijuana, contacted the local commandant of police, and
- 21:27Speaker 5: he promised us full cooperation. He assigned a special detail
- 21:31Speaker 5: of his men to work with us in covering the town.
- 21:34Speaker 5: At 8 p.m., the block-by-block canvas of the city began.
- 21:37Speaker 5: Every back alley, every bar, every restaurant, every hotel, they
- 21:40Speaker 5: were all checked. The tourist attractions, the souvenir stands, the nightclubs,
- 21:44Speaker 5: the highlight pavilion. We went straight through on it, 8
- 21:47Speaker 5: o'clock that night until 5 o'clock the next morning. All
- 21:49Speaker 5: it got us was sore feet and a mediocre lead
- 21:52Speaker 5: from a native taxi driver. After being shown the mug shots,
- 21:55Speaker 5: he told one of the Mexican officers in the detail
- 21:58Speaker 5: that about noon that day, he'd picked up two Americans
- 22:01Speaker 5: resembling Powell and Selby and driven them to the town
- 22:03Speaker 5: of Tecate, another Mexican tourist spot about 25 miles to
- 22:06Speaker 5: the east.
- 22:06Speaker 6: 10.30 a.m.
- 22:09Speaker 5: We drove over and checked with the police at Tecate,
- 22:12Speaker 5: and they told us the two Americans had arrived in
- 22:15Speaker 5: the town that morning. He invited Jess Gonzalez to go
- 22:17Speaker 5: along with the three of his men to the hotel
- 22:19Speaker 5: where the men were supposed to be staying.
- 22:21Speaker 6: Ed and I waited in the office.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Hi. Hi, Jess.
- 22:25Speaker 6: What do you got?
- 22:26Speaker 3: Not much. Went over to the hotel. The two men
- 22:28Speaker 3: weren't there.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Desk clerk says they told him they were driving out
- 22:30Speaker 1: to a little village about a mile from here. Police
- 22:32Speaker 1: commandant asked me to come back here and wait. Said
- 22:35Speaker 1: he and his men would drive out to the village
- 22:36Speaker 1: and check the men out.
- 22:37Speaker 6: That seems a little funny.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Doesn't it?
- 22:38Speaker 1: Well, he didn't invite me to come along. It's not
- 22:40Speaker 1: a good idea to push him. I mean, after all,
- 22:42Speaker 1: it's his jurisdiction.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Yeah. We're supposed to wait here till they get back?
- 22:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 3: I'm out to him now.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Si, policia?
- 22:49Speaker 3: Uh-huh, yeah. Si, si. About half an hour, yes, sir.
- 22:54Speaker 3: All right, gracias. Goodbye, si. The commandant, he and his
- 22:58Speaker 3: men found the two Americans.
- 22:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 3: No go. They're not Powell and Selby.
- 23:05Speaker 5: Half an hour later, the police commandant of Tecate returned
- 23:08Speaker 5: to the station along with his men and the two
- 23:10Speaker 5: American tourists in question. One look at them and we
- 23:13Speaker 5: knew we'd made the trip from Tijuana for nothing. Except
- 23:15Speaker 5: for their build and the color of their hair, the
- 23:17Speaker 5: two Americans bore little or no resemblance to Powell and Selby.
- 23:20Speaker 6: 2.30 p.m.
- 23:23Speaker 5: We headed back for Tijuana and we checked in with
- 23:24Speaker 5: Mort Gere and the rest of the men. While we'd
- 23:27Speaker 5: been gone, they'd chased down half a dozen leads, but
- 23:29Speaker 5: none of them had panned out. The rest of the afternoon,
- 23:32Speaker 5: we covered the racetrack at Agua Caliente and distributed mugshots
- 23:35Speaker 5: of the suspects to all track police officers. The mutual
- 23:39Speaker 5: windows were covered and also the foreign book.
- 23:41Speaker 2: No luck.
- 23:42Speaker 5: The six of us took time out for a bite
- 23:44Speaker 5: of supper and we talked it over. Logically, the next
- 23:46Speaker 5: place in line to cover was either the fishing town
- 23:49Speaker 5: of Ensenada on the coast or the city of Mexicali
- 23:51Speaker 5: further inland.
- 23:53Speaker 6: We decided to try Ensenada first.
- 23:54Speaker 5: 7.30 that night, we checked in at the Ensenada police
- 23:58Speaker 5: station where we met with a local sub-commandant, Pedro Martinez.
- 24:02Speaker 5: Like the other commandants in Tijuana and Tecate, he offered
- 24:05Speaker 5: full cooperation and gave us a special detail of men
- 24:08Speaker 5: to aid in the search. We gave him a supply
- 24:10Speaker 5: of mug shots of the two convicts to distribute.
- 24:12Speaker 6: Among his men.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Here you are, sir. These are pictures of one of them,
- 24:15Speaker 3: Andrew Powell. This one here is the other man, Bert Selby.
- 24:19Speaker 3: All right, thank you.
- 24:20Speaker 2: What? What?
- 24:22Speaker 3: See?
- 24:23Speaker 5: See.
- 24:24Speaker 6: Okay, I see.
- 24:25Speaker 3: These pictures, Juan.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Criminals. They're for distribution to the men. One each.
- 24:28Speaker 3: Excuse me, officers. Yes, all right.
- 24:32Speaker 6: Go ahead.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Joe, what is it?
- 24:40Speaker 6: It's got me.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I don't know. See the look on his face when
- 24:43Speaker 3: the chief showed him the mug shots?
- 24:45Speaker 6: He's got something on his mind. Let's wait a minute.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Officers, I hope you'll excuse me.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 24:51Speaker 6: Anything wrong?
- 24:52Speaker 2: My assistant, Teniente Sanfilippo, he says he knows the pictures
- 24:55Speaker 2: of these men.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Oh, how's that?
- 24:57Speaker 2: He says he saw these men this morning here in Ensenada.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Yeah, he's sure about that, is he?
- 25:00Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 25:00Speaker 8: He says he's sure.
- 25:01Speaker 2: He says the two men were here last night right
- 25:03Speaker 2: here in the station.
- 25:04Speaker 6: You mean your men booked them in? They committed some
- 25:06Speaker 6: kind of crime?
- 25:06Speaker 2: Oh, no, sir. They came in to report a crime.
- 25:08Speaker 6: 8.20 p.m.
- 25:12Speaker 5: On further questioning, the assistant to the Ensenada Commandant of
- 25:15Speaker 5: Police told us that the night before, two men answering
- 25:19Speaker 5: Powell and Selby's description had come in to file a
- 25:21Speaker 5: complaint at the Central Police Station. They charged that they'd
- 25:24Speaker 5: had their pockets picked at a local bar while they.
- 25:26Speaker 6: Were under the influence of alcohol.
- 25:28Speaker 5: The two complainants, who matched Powell's and Selby's descriptions perfectly,
- 25:32Speaker 5: signed themselves J.E. Dennis and Harold Thompson, both from Fresno, California,
- 25:37Speaker 5: the same names and addresses that had been used by
- 25:39Speaker 5: the occupants of the Southside Los Angeles hotel room where
- 25:42Speaker 5: the discarded prison uniforms had been found a day and
- 25:44Speaker 5: a half before. After a brief talk with the police commandant,
- 25:49Speaker 5: he dispatched a special detail to go out and pick
- 25:51Speaker 5: up the two men registered as Dennis and Thompson at
- 25:53Speaker 5: a motel near the south end of the city.
- 25:56Speaker 6: At the commandant's request, we remained at the office. 9 p.m., 9.30.
- 26:01Speaker 5: The detail assigned to the job returned, but was only
- 26:04Speaker 5: one of the suspects with him, Andrew Powell. While resisting arrest,
- 26:07Speaker 5: the other suspect, identified as Selby, received a cut forehead
- 26:11Speaker 5: and was being taken to a local clinic for treatment.
- 26:13Speaker 6: The commandant briefed us on what had happened. The rooms
- 26:17Speaker 6: were searched, Officer Friday.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Some money was found, also two guns, a revolver and
- 26:20Speaker 2: a shotgun.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Here they are.
- 26:21Speaker 6: All right, thanks very much, sir. Well, Paul, how about it?
- 26:25Speaker 6: You ready to cop out?
- 26:26Speaker 1: What are you talking about, cop out? What did you
- 26:27Speaker 1: guys come all the way down here for anyway? You
- 26:29Speaker 1: can't touch us.
- 26:30Speaker 3: What makes you think we can't? You can't, that's all.
- 26:32Speaker 3: You know better. You can't arrest us down here. No jurisdiction.
- 26:34Speaker 3: We didn't arrest you, Paul. The Mexican officers did. Okay, fine.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Now, how do you expect to get us out of Mexico?
- 26:39Speaker 1: Guess again, copper. You know you can't do it. You
- 26:41Speaker 1: haven't got the right to.
- 26:42Speaker 6: Maybe. You want to tell us where you have the loot?
- 26:44Speaker 6: The money you took in those holdups?
- 26:45Speaker 1: Why should I? Look, why don't you admit it? We
- 26:47Speaker 1: got you beat. We got over the line. You can't
- 26:49Speaker 1: touch us down here. I don't bet on that, mister.
- 26:50Speaker 6: Commandant?
- 26:51Speaker 1: Yes, sir?
- 26:52Speaker 6: You want to tell them how it stands?
- 26:54Speaker 2: I will see that the general in charge of the
- 26:55Speaker 2: Northern District is notified in the morning of your case.
- 26:58Speaker 2: He will see that you and your partner are deported.
- 27:00Speaker 3: What are you trying to pull? You can't do that.
- 27:01Speaker 3: You know it. It's illegal. So is robbery, Powell. Come
- 27:04Speaker 3: off it. Doesn't make any difference. You can't touch us
- 27:05Speaker 3: in Mexico. It's against the law. You can't touch us.
- 27:07Speaker 3: A popular misconception, Mr. Powell.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I'm afraid you have made a mistake.
- 27:11Speaker 8: If you like, you can pass the word.
- 27:13Speaker 6: How long would it be for us to receive the
- 27:15Speaker 6: prisoners at the line, sir?
- 27:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:17Speaker 2: A long time, I think. Maybe as long as 1
- 27:19Speaker 2: o'clock tomorrow.
- 27:20Speaker 1: You know you can't do this. You'll never get away
- 27:21Speaker 1: with it. I know a lawyer in Tijuana. I'll get
- 27:23Speaker 1: him to straighten that out.
- 27:24Speaker 2: You understand, Sergeant. We can't hand this man over to
- 27:26Speaker 2: you now. But if you will be at the international
- 27:28Speaker 2: border at 1 o'clock tomorrow, I'm sure they'll be crossing over.
- 27:31Speaker 3: You can't do this. It's illegal. You know you can't.
- 27:33Speaker 6: We're going to try.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Wasting your time? Why don't you admit it? You can't
- 27:36Speaker 1: arrest us. We got over the line, we got your beat.
- 27:38Speaker 1: You can't arrest us and you know it. You know that,
- 27:39Speaker 1: don't you?
- 27:40Speaker 6: There's only one thing I know for sure, pal.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 27:42Speaker 6: San Quentin. You got out and you're going back.
- 27:51Speaker 4: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 27:54Speaker 4: were changed to protect the innocent. On December 9th, trial
- 27:58Speaker 4: was held in Superior Court, Department 87, City and County
- 28:01Speaker 4: of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 28:03Speaker 5: In a moment, the results of that trial. Now, here
- 28:05Speaker 5: is our star, Jack Webb. Thank you, George Fenneman. Friends,
- 28:08Speaker 5: try a pack of Fatimas tomorrow and compare them yourself.
- 28:11Speaker 5: We're so sure that you'll enjoy Fatima's extra mild and
- 28:14Speaker 5: soothing smoke that we'll give you your money back if
- 28:16Speaker 5: you don't enjoy Fatima more than the king-size cigarettes you've
- 28:19Speaker 5: been smoking. Now, in my opinion, nothing proves our confidence
- 28:23Speaker 5: in Fatima more than that.
- 28:25Speaker 6: So buy a pack tomorrow.
- 28:26Speaker 5: I know you'll agree with me that Fatima is the
- 28:28Speaker 5: best of all king-size cigarettes. That in Fatima, the difference
- 28:32Speaker 5: is quality.
