- 0:00Speaker 1: All right. Here he is Sean Means.
- 0:02Speaker 2: He is a reporter and editor at the Salt Lake Tribune.
- 0:07Speaker 2: You can read things that he does there and not
- 0:10Speaker 2: see his invisible hand. As an editor at sltrib dot com,
- 0:15Speaker 2: you can read his movie reviews. He's a movie reviewer
- 0:18Speaker 2: at movie cricket dot net, and he's here to tell
- 0:21Speaker 2: us about movies that are opening this weekend.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Hello, what's up. Well, we got three movies opening this week.
- 0:27Speaker 3: I've seen two of them.
- 0:29Speaker 4: They did not screen Den of Thieves to Pantera.
- 0:33Speaker 1: What a surprise.
- 0:34Speaker 3: They didn't screen the first Den of Thieves back in
- 0:37Speaker 3: like twenty eighteen or whatever, and if they did, I
- 0:40Speaker 3: never saw it. This is a for the first one
- 0:42Speaker 3: was a heist movie with Gerard Butler and Oh Jackson Junior,
- 0:46Speaker 3: that's Ice Cube's son, and this one brings them back
- 0:49Speaker 3: together again for more heistaning or whatever.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Or says Big Nick is back. Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 3: If you think you might like a Gerard Butler action
- 0:57Speaker 3: movie that opens in January, then you have been listening
- 1:00Speaker 3: to a thing I've said. And there's really nothing I
- 1:03Speaker 3: can do for you. There's no help, no for you.
- 1:07Speaker 3: We will move on to the last Showgirl I've heard
- 1:10Speaker 3: about that family Anderson. This is a drama directed by
- 1:13Speaker 3: Gia Coppola, who is Francis Coppo's granddaughter, Sophia his niece.
- 1:17Speaker 3: It's said in Las Vegas a showgirl review that's been
- 1:20Speaker 3: going on for thirty years or more. The news hits
- 1:25Speaker 3: the news is that they're about to close two weeks
- 1:27Speaker 3: and they're done. And this especially hits one of the
- 1:30Speaker 3: showgirls very hard.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Shelley. She's been doing she's been there for most of
- 1:34Speaker 4: the thirty years.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Wow, this could be a true story.
- 1:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 3: She's played by Pamela Anderson, who is deservedly getting some
- 1:41Speaker 3: good reviews for this performance. She got a sag Award
- 1:43Speaker 3: nomination the other day. The other day, she's trying to
- 1:48Speaker 3: weigh her options. She thinks about auditioning for one of
- 1:51Speaker 3: the smuttier showgirl shows in Vegas. She thinks about becoming
- 1:55Speaker 3: a cocktail waitress like her friend Annette played by Jamie
- 1:58Speaker 3: the Curtis. She's also considering her relationship with Eddie, this
- 2:02Speaker 3: show stage manager who's played by Dave Batista, and she's
- 2:06Speaker 3: trying to figure out her relationship with her daughter who's
- 2:08Speaker 3: in college. And there's there's some very estranged circumstances going
- 2:13Speaker 3: on there.
- 2:13Speaker 4: She's played by Billy Lord.
- 2:16Speaker 3: And a couple of the younger show girls who are
- 2:18Speaker 3: with her played by Brenda Song and Karen and Schipka.
- 2:20Speaker 3: So this is a very This really captures the sort
- 2:24Speaker 3: of ragged beauty of Los Angeles very well. A lot
- 2:27Speaker 3: of it's a lot of the of Vegas, Vegas Angels
- 2:33Speaker 3: of Las Vegas. There's a lot shot like right after
- 2:35Speaker 3: sun the sunriser, right before sunset, and so like the
- 2:38Speaker 3: light is coming in at just the right angle. And
- 2:41Speaker 3: it is a really strong vehicle for Pamela Anderson. You
- 2:45Speaker 3: can argue she doesn't have the most you know, breadth
- 2:48Speaker 3: as an actress range. You wouldn't necessarily want to see
- 2:51Speaker 3: her do Lady Macbeth or something. But here she's this
- 2:55Speaker 3: This role is very narrowly tailored and it's really perfect
- 2:58Speaker 3: for her, and and she the reason to.
- 3:00Speaker 4: See it, all right.
- 3:01Speaker 1: House Dave Batista in it. He's fine, he looks very different.
- 3:05Speaker 4: He's he's I find him to be a very interesting actor.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Actually, I mean for somebody that you used to be
- 3:10Speaker 3: a big bruising wrestler.
- 3:12Speaker 4: He's great at comedy.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Look at the Guardian films and but you look at
- 3:16Speaker 3: Cabin in the Woods.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, he made that movie.
- 3:18Speaker 1: He scared the hell out of you.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Ory, knock at the door, knock at the door,
- 3:21Speaker 4: knock at the door.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Sorry, it was a cabin. It was in a cabin
- 3:25Speaker 4: in the woods. That's what. Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Now three stars, three stars for less, show Girl, now
- 3:29Speaker 3: better Man.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:32Speaker 1: To my point, I was saying, we we here, don't
- 3:35Speaker 1: know who Robbie Williams is. He's in America.
- 3:38Speaker 4: We in America.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Robbie Williams like Kylie Minogue. He's he's like, he's like soccer.
- 3:42Speaker 3: He's really popular everywhere in the world except America.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a big thing. No, he's gonna go see
- 3:47Speaker 1: this movie.
- 3:47Speaker 3: He's He was a British singer. Started in a boy
- 3:51Speaker 3: band called Take That when he was fifteen. Uh. Uh
- 3:56Speaker 3: did that for a while and then went solo and
- 3:58Speaker 3: and uh became sort of a all around entertainer type.
- 4:04Speaker 4: He does a lot of covers. The only song of
- 4:07Speaker 4: his I.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Remembered off hand was he sang the old song Beyond
- 4:13Speaker 3: the Sea on.
- 4:15Speaker 4: The closing credits of Finding Nemo.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it. Yeah, Bobby, that the old Bobby Darrel
- 4:20Speaker 1: Bobby Darren song.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Right.
- 4:23Speaker 3: So in this in this movie, this is a very
- 4:25Speaker 3: straightforward musical biopic in that it like shows you his
- 4:29Speaker 3: life and how you know, fame and and sex and
- 4:33Speaker 3: drugs and rock and roll and all that, especially the drugs.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Lots of drugs, and there's a lot of energy and
- 4:39Speaker 3: there's some strong musical numbers to sort of depict the
- 4:41Speaker 3: rapid rise of the boy band take that in the nineties.
- 4:46Speaker 3: If you actually know any of the songs, and I
- 4:48Speaker 3: didn't and I still don't, you'll really love those parts.
- 4:52Speaker 3: It reminded me more of Rocketman, the the Elton John
- 4:55Speaker 3: kind of like that style, that kind of style from
- 4:57Speaker 3: a couple years ago, where it would break into song,
- 5:00Speaker 3: break into musical numbers in the middle things. Not so
- 5:02Speaker 3: much like Bohemian Rhapsody, which I felt was just very
- 5:05Speaker 3: just straightforward and boring is all get out.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 3: The the the big conceit here is how the movie
- 5:12Speaker 3: depicts Robbie himself.
- 5:14Speaker 4: You might you've probably seen this in the ads. Robbie is.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Robbie is depicted the way and they describe it as
- 5:19Speaker 3: this is the way he sees himself. And he is
- 5:22Speaker 3: a computer animated chimpanzee in human clothing. What Yeah, I
- 5:28Speaker 3: did not stutter. He is a computer animated chimpanzee in
- 5:31Speaker 3: human clothing.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Ye, who does drugs?
- 5:34Speaker 4: Who does drugs?
- 5:35Speaker 1: Who?
- 5:35Speaker 4: Who does drugs? Who dances with with hot women? The
- 5:38Speaker 4: whole all of it.
- 5:40Speaker 3: There's a there's a performance capture actor named John o'davies.
- 5:44Speaker 3: He shares the role with Robbie himself. Robbie does the
- 5:47Speaker 3: voice or his for himself. I think it's a really
- 5:51Speaker 3: smart idea because it really it is a great it's
- 5:54Speaker 3: great symbolism for one thing, but it also keeps the
- 5:56Speaker 3: viewer from thinking too much about the performer who's playing
- 5:59Speaker 3: the star. You don't have that whole how well? How
- 6:03Speaker 3: well does Timothy shallow may sing like Dylan question? You
- 6:06Speaker 3: know you don't have you don't have that in this
- 6:10Speaker 3: I think I think it's it's it's it's got problems.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I mean, it is still just a biopic and every
- 6:15Speaker 3: every every cliche that walk hard punctured is here.
- 6:21Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:22Speaker 3: But if you're a fan of this kind of nineties music,
- 6:25Speaker 3: and it's a very sharp, energetic movie. The director Michael Gracie,
- 6:30Speaker 3: he did the Greatest Showman, so it's it's very much
- 6:34Speaker 3: like an old school, old school.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Musical in that way. Three.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I gave it three stars for better Man. It's playing
- 6:43Speaker 3: I've seen I've seen others give it more. I've seen
- 6:45Speaker 3: others give it less. Uh, it's playing all over the place.
- 6:48Speaker 3: But it's it's it's fascinating for what it's doing.
- 6:53Speaker 1: It's on you. You sort of appreciate it for Yeah, yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 1: I understood.
- 6:57Speaker 4: That is a different approach.
- 6:58Speaker 3: It is right, I mean, and in the end, the
- 7:01Speaker 3: way you describe it, it goes, oh, well that okay, that's
- 7:04Speaker 3: kind of interesting, but I still don't care. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:07Speaker 3: I think if you're not a Robbie Williams fan, I
- 7:10Speaker 3: can't imagine that people are going to be rushing to
- 7:13Speaker 3: see this.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Unless I think kids are like monkey.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I think this could well me well, kids don't know
- 7:20Speaker 3: the kids, No, this is rated R. It's as the
- 7:23Speaker 3: the aforementioned sex and drugs and rock and roll. Yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 3: don't do that. But it's I don't know. I think
- 7:30Speaker 3: I think, I don't know if it could make you
- 7:32Speaker 3: a Robbie Williamson or you know. I mean, the music
- 7:35Speaker 3: is good. In his later career, he's, like I said,
- 7:37Speaker 3: he's been more about, you know, doing the old school
- 7:41Speaker 3: he grew up with his father listening to Sinatra and whatnot.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And the big finale involves a performance of My Way.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Still I still think, I still think Gary Oldman doing
- 7:53Speaker 3: uh sid Vicious's version of it, and Sid and Nancy
- 7:56Speaker 3: is the is the Alzheimer for that song.
- 7:58Speaker 4: But that's just me, all right.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So there you go. It's a better Man three stars.
- 8:03Speaker 1: What do we got next week?
- 8:06Speaker 4: Next week we got a lot of the big end
- 8:08Speaker 4: of year movies are finally.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Arriving in Utah. We got September five, which was on
- 8:13Speaker 3: my top ten list. It's a it's a thriller about
- 8:15Speaker 3: set in the control room of ABC Sports during the
- 8:17Speaker 3: seventy two Munich Olympics.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and when when Spielberg already do this.
- 8:22Speaker 3: He did Munich, which was about which was started with
- 8:25Speaker 3: the Munich, with the with the terrorist attack on the
- 8:27Speaker 3: Israeli team and the Munich Olympics, but it was more
- 8:30Speaker 3: about the actions that happened after. Oh yeah, this is
- 8:34Speaker 3: this is set entirely in the news in the in
- 8:37Speaker 3: the control room where you've got this young director guiding
- 8:41Speaker 3: traffic and could go where the cameras go and everything
- 8:43Speaker 3: and his boss Ruin Ralic of of ABC Sports, having
- 8:48Speaker 3: all the fights you know, to keep to keep the
- 8:50Speaker 3: news division from taking the story over things like that.
- 8:53Speaker 3: You also got The Brutalist, which is one of the
- 8:55Speaker 3: big Awards season movies. Adrian Brody is an immigrant architect
- 8:58Speaker 3: building his dream. Sure, it's three and a half hours long,
- 9:01Speaker 3: includes an intermission, but it's amazing.
- 9:04Speaker 4: Nickel Boys.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Which also amazing Hard Truths, which is a Mike Lee
- 9:09Speaker 3: drama about two sisters in England, one of whom was
- 9:11Speaker 3: the angriest woman you've ever seen in the movie Real
- 9:14Speaker 3: And then for for people who don't want the highbrow
- 9:17Speaker 3: things are going to win awards stuff Wolfman Wolfman, a
- 9:21Speaker 3: new version of Wolfman with Chris Rabbitt and Julia Garner.
- 9:24Speaker 1: All right, all right, well, thank you very much.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Shaw means you can find all of his stuff either
- 9:29Speaker 2: sl trip dot com. Probably the best place to go
- 9:32Speaker 2: is movie cricket dot net.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you, you
