Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today.
- 0:17We are in Isaiah chapter 3 and tentatively we'll do verses one
- 0:23through 15 today. The book of Isaiah is prophecy
- 0:28from about hundred 150 years before the exile to Babylon for
- 0:36God's people from Israel. And Isaiah was a prophet during
- 0:41the reign of a couple good kings and a couple bad kings.
- 0:45And he had some definitively sharp words to say to people
- 0:52that were very religious, but who were totally unlike God in
- 0:57their words and in their actions.
- 1:00And so we're going to we're going to read through some of
- 1:02that today in chapter 3. So just letting you know on the
- 1:08front end of this, like this is serious.
- 1:11This is well, let's just read through and you'll see what I'm
- 1:15saying. Isaiah chapter 3, verse number
- 1:19one. Note this Yahweh Adonai of
- 1:23heaven's armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and from
- 1:28Judah every kind of security. So here, here's what's going to
- 1:34happen. Southern Kingdom of Judah and
- 1:36from your capital city, God is going to take away everything
- 1:40that you are counting on to protect you, to keep you safe,
- 1:44to make you great. God is the one who's actually
- 1:48your safety, but you guys don't recognize that.
- 1:51And so I'm going to take away all of your safety Nets.
- 1:54Then he goes on describing through like verse #4 or so all
- 2:00of the things that he's taking away.
- 2:02So this is helpful for us. What kinds of things can we
- 2:06trust in instead of trusting God?
- 2:08This warns us what some of those things can be.
- 2:11He says the entire supply of bread and water.
- 2:15We can trust our literal like storehouses.
- 2:19We can trust our doomsday bunker in our backyard, He says I'm
- 2:24taking away the entire supply of bread and water.
- 2:27Heroes and warriors, the great defenders of your people.
- 2:33If you wanted to maybe make it a little bit more similar to what
- 2:36we have today, I'm taking away your nukes.
- 2:40I'm taking away, you know, your F20 twos or your B52 bombers.
- 2:46I think I have the the right generation of bomber in my head.
- 2:50I'm taking away your Navy like these people that you count on
- 2:55that will physically keep you safe and physically keep the
- 2:58enemy away. I'm going to take those away
- 2:59because you're trusting in them, not in God, he says.
- 3:03Judges and prophets, these people that help kind of corral
- 3:09evil within your society. The judges, those that would say
- 3:13all right, you have to do this in compensation for this other
- 3:19person, The judges are going to be taken away.
- 3:21The prophets, those ones that warn Israel when they are going
- 3:26to go into divine danger, or as is likely hear from what I'm
- 3:33seeing down in verse #3 it could also include the false prophets,
- 3:38those that would be prophets of Baal or one of the other false
- 3:42gods of the nations around Israel that they were putting
- 3:46their trust in. What is this guy say instead of
- 3:49what has the Lord said? And you can read about that over
- 3:53and over again in first and second Kings especially.
- 3:56So he says I'm taking away the entire supply of supply of bread
- 4:00and water. I'm taking away the heroes and
- 4:02warriors. I'm taking away the judges and
- 4:04prophets, he says. I'm taking away the fortune
- 4:06tellers and elders, commanders of 50 and dignitaries.
- 4:12I'm going to stop there real quick before I mention a few
- 4:14more. So here these people that are
- 4:16pretending to tell you the future, I'm taking all of them
- 4:19away. He says.
- 4:20The elders, the people that have been around for a while and they
- 4:22know kind of the way that the world works.
- 4:25He says. I'm going to take those away so
- 4:27that you can't even rely on the wisdom of experience or old age
- 4:34in order for you to figure out what you should do in your life.
- 4:37You're not going to have them anymore, he says.
- 4:39I'm going to take away the commanders of 50 and
- 4:42dignitaries, these people that were over smaller portions of
- 4:46Israel. So, you know, think City Council
- 4:49members, I'm going to take away your mayor, those types of
- 4:53things. He says, I'm going to take away
- 4:56your counselors, your cunning magicians and your necromancers.
- 5:00So all of these people that you would consult or you would talk
- 5:06to so that they would talk to some spiritual being on your
- 5:10behalf in order to get you answers.
- 5:12He's God says Nope, I'm taking all of them out of the way too.
- 5:15You can't rely on how strong someone is.
- 5:18You can't rely on physical resources like bread and water.
- 5:22You can't rely on the, you know, smart people making decisions.
- 5:26You can't rely on spiritual beings.
- 5:29You can't rely on even, like, low level people who are only in
- 5:34charge of 50 people in your nation, he says.
- 5:36I'm taking all of this away and I think for my life and for
- 5:40yours, how often do we put our trust in things other than God?
- 5:44Like if America's going to be safe.
- 5:47And again, I'm in America and so this is just what I know I
- 5:53cannot place my trust in. OK, well, I have, you know,
- 5:58President Trump is at the helm and so I'm safe or, oh, I have,
- 6:03you know, the world's greatest Air Force and also the world's
- 6:08fourth greatest Air Force because I don't know if you guys
- 6:10have seen that before. But it's like our Air Force is
- 6:13the biggest or has the most capable, you know, fighter
- 6:18planes or whatever. And the fourth most, the fourth
- 6:21biggest Air Force in the world is the, you know, Navy's Air
- 6:25Force or whatever. Like that is not the thing that
- 6:30keeps us safe. What keeps us safe is not a
- 6:34enormous military or are, you know, extravagant riches here in
- 6:40America. None of that is what actually
- 6:43protects us or keeps us safe. And so it doesn't in one sense,
- 6:47it doesn't matter what the day-to-day is in our country
- 6:52that we want to, as we read in previous chapters, we want to
- 6:55pursue righteousness and justice and doing right by God and doing
- 6:59right in the sight of God and doing right by man.
- 7:02We want to do all of that. So in that sense, it matters.
- 7:07But it doesn't matter who is voted into the White House or
- 7:11who is in Congress or who is, you know, in our state
- 7:14legislator who's voted on to our City Council.
- 7:17What ultimately matters is our faith and trust in God because
- 7:21he is the one that sets up rulers and tears down rulers,
- 7:25that sets up nations and tears them down the one that gives
- 7:28victory to armies or dismantles armies.
- 7:31Like God is the one who is in charge of all of that.
- 7:34So yes, we can seek to be good God, honoring citizens who
- 7:39utilize our votes in line with our Christian conscience and
- 7:43what we believe the word of God to teach us.
- 7:46But at the end of the day, our salvation as a nation, our
- 7:51health, our prosperity, it doesn't ultimately come from any
- 7:55human person. It comes from God.
- 7:57So let's not make the same mistake that Israel made in
- 8:00thinking all of these other persons or locations, leadership
- 8:06positions are what actually keep us safe.
- 8:08It's God, not man. Verse #4 I will make youths
- 8:13their leaders and unstable rulers will govern them.
- 8:19I got to be honest with you guys.
- 8:20You know, I'm 20. I'm 29 years old now.
- 8:24I don't, I don't know if that's an indictment against anyone
- 8:30that I'm here, you know, pastoring and leaving a church.
- 8:32I, I would hope even knowing, you know, the stories of Charles
- 8:35Spurgeon got saved at about 17. I think it was 17 or 18 years
- 8:40old and by 19 or 20 he was pastoring a very large church in
- 8:47London. And it was because it was
- 8:50obvious, you know, the Holy Spirit is on him.
- 8:52And I, I don't want to claim anything for myself.
- 8:55My hope would be that I'm sensitive to the Holy Spirit and
- 8:58that I am led by him and, and what I do in teaching or
- 9:02preaching. And so I hope that I'm not one
- 9:05of these where it's a punishment on a nation to have
- 9:09inexperienced people placed into leadership because there is
- 9:13nobody else that can fill in the role.
- 9:17It is an indictment against a nation when there's not able to
- 9:21be some wisdom that is there. Verse #5 the people will oppress
- 9:27one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor.
- 9:30The young will act arrogantly against the old and the
- 9:34worthless will act arrogantly toward the honorable.
- 9:38When there is interpersonal fighting, that is a sign of a
- 9:43deteriorating world. Though I am young, I want to
- 9:46have respect for those that have come before me.
- 9:49I want to have respect for my elders.
- 9:52And so I want to encourage you towards that, that if you're a
- 9:56young person, I understand that not every old person says things
- 10:02the way that you would say things.
- 10:03Not every person has the same even set of values that you do.
- 10:07But have a concern to not act in arrogance and pride towards
- 10:14those that are older than you like realize that they have
- 10:17lived through life and circumstances that you haven't.
- 10:22And so there is wisdom there from them towards you.
- 10:26Verse number six, a man will even seize his brother in his
- 10:30father's house saying you have a cloak.
- 10:32You be our leader. This heap of rubble will be
- 10:35under your control here as God just dismantles all of the
- 10:40safety Nets for Israel or for the southern Kingdom of Judah
- 10:44and for Jerusalem. A person that has a jacket is
- 10:48going to be viewed as man. This is a guy who has his life
- 10:52together. We're going to put him in charge
- 10:54because we have no one to be in charge.
- 10:56A lack of leadership is a very, very bad sign for anyone, for
- 11:01any church, for any nation, for any region of man.
- 11:07Leadership and authority is good and valuable and to be followed.
- 11:12Now, as we've seen, you don't want just anyone to be a leader.
- 11:16Your leaders need to be those that follow and love the Lord,
- 11:20ones that draw attention to what does God say.
- 11:23And those are the kinds of leaders that we should have
- 11:26verse #7 on that day he'll cry out saying I'm not a healer.
- 11:30I, I don't even have food or clothing in my house.
- 11:33Don't make me the leader of the people.
- 11:35For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they
- 11:39have spoken and acted against Yahweh, defying his glorious
- 11:44presence. That is God had his Shekinah
- 11:47glory, his presence there in the temple in Jerusalem.
- 11:51That didn't change how the people treated one another or
- 11:56how they worshipped Him and said they did whatever they wanted to
- 11:59do, regardless of what God had said.
- 12:01Verse #9 The look on their faces testifies against them, and like
- 12:06Sodom, they flaunt their sin. They do not conceal it.
- 12:10Woe to them, for they have brought disaster on themselves.
- 12:15Part of a failing society is a boldness in sin without shame or
- 12:23regret it. That's part of some of the
- 12:28difficulty of our world today is people have forgotten to be
- 12:30ashamed for their sin, that they will talk about their failures.
- 12:37And there's not a like contrition, A repentance to say,
- 12:41man, that was wrong. I shouldn't have said that.
- 12:43Like, yeah, I, I really blew up against this other person and I
- 12:48cursed them out. And man, I feel awful for that.
- 12:51I should not have said those things.
- 12:53I should not have lost my temper.
- 12:55Instead people just do whatever they want to do and they would
- 13:01place greater blame on a person that would shame them for their
- 13:06actions. They they would view that person
- 13:09as more at fault than even themselves for doing the shame
- 13:12worthy actions. As a pastor, I want to encourage
- 13:16you like shame is a good thing to have.
- 13:19Now we want to have a godly shame that says I ain't doing
- 13:24that again. I want to be like Jesus.
- 13:26That's a godly shame. A bad shame just says, oh, I'm
- 13:29terrible, I'm awful. I guess I better just, you know,
- 13:34retreat into a corner or not go to church anymore.
- 13:37No, like have shame that says I'm not going to be that person
- 13:41anymore because this sin doesn't define me.
- 13:44Jesus defines me. And so I'm going to get rid of
- 13:46the sin and I'm going to keep on going the Jesus way.
- 13:50So shame is good. Allow shame to lead you to
- 13:52Jesus. Don't be like Jerusalem and
- 13:54Judah here that like Sodom, they just sin.
- 13:57They sin openly and it doesn't really matter what anyone else
- 14:01says about you can think of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in
- 14:06Genesis 19, that public group rape and homosexuality that was
- 14:13their abuse of, of strangers, of foreigners is what was taking
- 14:19place there. And you know, the men of the
- 14:21city are all gathering to do this great evil against those
- 14:25angels that had come to Lot's house.
- 14:27And so these men did not have shame in their actions.
- 14:31And God says, Israel, I'm going to say Israel, God's people, the
- 14:36southern Kingdom of Judah. Judah, you have not had shame
- 14:40about your evil. Verse #10 tell the righteous
- 14:43that it'll go well for them, for they will eat the fruit of their
- 14:46labor. He says not all of you in
- 14:48Jerusalem and Judah are evil. The righteous, you're going to
- 14:51be fine. He says, verse #11 woe to the
- 14:54wicked. It will go badly for them, for
- 14:57what they have done will be done to them.
- 15:00He says youths oppress my people and women rule over them.
- 15:05My people, your leaders mislead you.
- 15:09They confuse the direction of your paths here.
- 15:13He says in addition to the other evils taking place, he says
- 15:18youths, this is young people. It's kind of funny, even not
- 15:25funny. Ha, ha, it's funny.
- 15:26Ironically, even recently in the Essex area, there have been
- 15:33larger groups of teens that have gotten together and not been
- 15:38doing great things, even sometimes attacking people.
- 15:43And man, I, I see some of this societal failure that is taking
- 15:48place even within our area. I want to encourage you, if
- 15:52you're a parent, you are responsible for your child, know
- 15:55where they are at all times. Like that's, that's not asking
- 15:59too much to say they are accountable and responsible to
- 16:04you. And if they're somewhere they're
- 16:07not supposed to be if they're with someone they're not
- 16:09supposed to be with, if you will in a godly manner kind not
- 16:13cursing or insulting or yelling like bring the hammer down.
- 16:17Let there be consequence for bad actions.
- 16:20Children that are never told no are not raised to succeed in
- 16:25life. Instead, they'll be like these
- 16:26youths here in this verse says youths oppress my people and
- 16:30women rule over them. That there's such a lack of
- 16:34leadership from the men that the women are leading here and God
- 16:39says this is not a good thing that there there is an
- 16:43abdication of leadership by the men that the men are supposed to
- 16:48be leaders, but instead they are doing bad things.
- 16:53They are sinning shamefully and they are not leading as they are
- 16:58supposed to. This isn't saying all right.
- 17:00Well, if a, you know, if a woman is leading in prayer, if a, you
- 17:05know, you have a female mayor or something, this is not saying,
- 17:09oh man, it's, it's shameful for a woman to be in control.
- 17:14No, that is not what's being said here.
- 17:16There is a role for men of God within the work of God and the
- 17:24people of God that I can't just say, well, you know, I've got
- 17:29some of my great friends here at the at the church.
- 17:32OK, well, I really don't want to deal with the, you know, prayer
- 17:37ministry of the church. And so I'm just going to have,
- 17:40you know, Kathy or I'm just going to have, you know, Dina
- 17:44take care of that and they'll, they'll do with the prayer
- 17:47stuff. And I don't really have to know
- 17:49if I'm a person of God and if I'm going to be a man of God,
- 17:53then I need to, if you will, head the charge.
- 17:57I don't have to be the only one doing it.
- 17:59Hopefully I'm not the only one doing it, but that I'm
- 18:01encouraging other people follow me.
- 18:03I'm going to do the thing, Do the thing with me.
- 18:06But I'm going to be leading the charge.
- 18:08I'm going to be the first one into the battle fray for the
- 18:11Lord. Come with me as I'm doing it.
- 18:14And that was not what was happening there in Israel, He
- 18:17says, my people, your leaders mislead you.
- 18:20They confuse the direction of your past.
- 18:22Just because you have a leader does not mean that they will
- 18:25always do or say what is right. That is true over and over and
- 18:29over again. Just because Governor Moore says
- 18:33something, if you're here in Maryland, it doesn't mean that
- 18:36it's right. It doesn't mean that it's godly.
- 18:38Just because one of our senators or one of our Congress people
- 18:41says something or espouses something doesn't mean that it's
- 18:44right or that it's in line with the word of God.
- 18:46Just because President Trump or Vice President Vance says
- 18:49something or has a policy does not mean that it's right or in
- 18:53line with the word of God. And so whatever our leaders are,
- 18:56they can mislead us. So don't just blindly follow.
- 19:01Instead, say I'm going to go back to the Word.
- 19:04I'm going to pray for my leaders.
- 19:05God commands me to do that, but then I'm going to encourage them
- 19:10to go the right path, not just the path that they've been on.
- 19:14These last verses. Here, 13 through 15, Yahweh
- 19:18rises to argue the case and stands to judge the people.
- 19:23So God is both the prosecuting attorney and the judge in this
- 19:27courtroom. Verse 14, Yahweh brings this
- 19:30charge against the elders and leaders of His people.
- 19:33You have devastated the vineyard.
- 19:35The plunder from the poor is in your houses.
- 19:39Why do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?
- 19:43This is the declaration of Yahweh at an eye of heaven's
- 19:48armies. So here in these last verses,
- 19:52God says, here's here's my specific charge against the
- 19:55people leading the nation right now is that you are taking
- 19:58advantage of the poor, like you're making life hard for poor
- 20:02people. And when you do that, it is an
- 20:04affront to God himself. He says, these are my people.
- 20:09And so because they are made in my image, they belong to me.
- 20:13And you are mistreating them, he says.
- 20:15I'm going to be both prosecuting attorney and judge against you.
- 20:21Do you have a love and a care for the poor?
- 20:24Even as it relates to so many things in in our world, there
- 20:30can often be a suspicion and a hatred of the poor.
- 20:35Some people are poor due to their own actions or works, but
- 20:38I personally known far more people that are poor as a result
- 20:44of life itself just being difficult.
- 20:47And so I want to encourage you have a heart like that of God
- 20:51that says these are people made in the image of God and so they
- 20:54are deserving of care. They do not need to be taken
- 20:57advantage of. They don't need to be as he
- 21:00says. Why do you grind the faces of
- 21:02the poor like you're just demolishing these people?
- 21:06And so let's have a care for those that are most in need.
- 21:11Let's lead. Let's lead the charge.
- 21:14Let's be the ones that are praying, that are giving, that
- 21:18are serving, that are evangelizing, that are building
- 21:21others up, that are saying kind words and encouraging others,
- 21:25that are warning others. Let's lead in these areas as the
- 21:29people of God so that our nation can be those righteous that it
- 21:33will go well with and not the wicked who will be destroyed.
- 21:38Thanks for watching this episode and looking forward to I believe
- 21:42concluding chapter 3 next episode.
- 21:45God bless.
