Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / Banana Fish Ep.5- From Death to Morning
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person thing, Michelle. I guess here again
- 0:06Speaker 1: and you're still here? Wow? Why? Thank you though, thanks
- 0:10Speaker 1: for coming back. We're gonna talk about Banana Fish episode
- 0:14Speaker 1: five today because that's what we're doing, so I hope
- 0:19Speaker 1: you're ready. I have all sorts of knowledge about things
- 0:22Speaker 1: that I need to drop on you this episode, so
- 0:25Speaker 1: be prepared to learn things that you don't really want
- 0:28Speaker 1: to know. Yay, So let's just get right into it
- 0:32Speaker 1: because I feel like this is gonna be long. Episode
- 0:34Speaker 1: five is called from Death to Mourning, and by morning
- 0:38Speaker 1: I mean like the time of day, not like mourning
- 0:41Speaker 1: the loss of someone. And that is also the name
- 0:44Speaker 1: of a collection of short stories by Thomas Wolfe. I
- 0:47Speaker 1: don't really know any more than that. And now I
- 0:50Speaker 1: am like one hundred percent sure that they're just picking
- 0:52Speaker 1: cool titles and not like trying to relate what happens
- 0:56Speaker 1: in the stories to what's happening in the anime, which
- 1:00Speaker 1: is totally fine. I still think they're really cool, so
- 1:03Speaker 1: I'll continue to tell you what they're from, but I
- 1:05Speaker 1: don't think there's any more to it than that. Before
- 1:08Speaker 1: we start, I just wanted to note that if you
- 1:12Speaker 1: have been watching banana fish in Japanese with the official
- 1:15Speaker 1: translation that I guess you would get on like Amazon
- 1:18Speaker 1: Prime or something, you are really gonna notice differences in
- 1:22Speaker 1: what I'm saying versus that translation in this episode. I
- 1:26Speaker 1: know in the past I've said that I don't really
- 1:29Speaker 1: like the translation, especially when it just puts slurs in
- 1:33Speaker 1: that don't belong there and stuff like that. But in
- 1:36Speaker 1: this particular episode, I felt like a lot of the
- 1:39Speaker 1: wording was like really clunky or slightly confusing. So I
- 1:44Speaker 1: was going back and forth between watching the anime and
- 1:47Speaker 1: writing notes and like stopping and going like, let me
- 1:49Speaker 1: check the manga and see if there's a better way
- 1:51Speaker 1: to say that, because the manga's just on my table. Yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 1: so in some cases this is gonna sound a little
- 1:58Speaker 1: bit more like the manga than it does the end anime.
- 2:00Speaker 1: But I am confident that the Japanese in both is
- 2:04Speaker 1: the same because every time I have checked between them,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and I have a bunch of times, it's been the same.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So yeah, just in case you were like, hun, that
- 2:14Speaker 1: doesn't sound like I remembered, it's the same thing. I'm
- 2:17Speaker 1: just westernizing it a little bit more. Whatever. I don't know,
- 2:21Speaker 1: something like that, and that'll probably go for a lot
- 2:25Speaker 1: of the coming episodes as well, maybe at least. So, yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 1: let's just get started and see how hard it is
- 2:35Speaker 1: for me to get through this one. Yeah. So we
- 2:38Speaker 1: start the episode with George, you know that lawyer, Max,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and Ash sitting at a table in that visitation room
- 2:46Speaker 1: in the jail, and George says, here's your bell grant,
- 2:50Speaker 1: but if you flee or commit a crime, it'll be withdrawn.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Got it? Ash says yeah, and he signs it and
- 2:57Speaker 1: he slides it back to George and George is like, Okay,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you're now conditionally free. Max has been kind of pouting
- 3:05Speaker 1: this whole time. He does not look impressed, and George
- 3:09Speaker 1: and Ash stand and they shake hands and George says congratulations,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and Ash thanks him, calls him mister Scott, so now
- 3:17Speaker 1: we know his last name. Two And then we cut
- 3:19Speaker 1: to Age, who is on a couch really really excited,
- 3:23Speaker 1: and he says, really, Ash is getting out of jail.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He's really cute. Shunichi is sitting on a chair next
- 3:30Speaker 1: to him and he says, yeah, Captain Jenkins helped him.
- 3:34Speaker 1: But this all ends here for us. After we take
- 3:38Speaker 1: Ash to the Captain we're heading straight to the airport.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Age looks away really disenfranchised, and he says okay. Then
- 3:48Speaker 1: we go to Dino, who is on the phone and
- 3:50Speaker 1: he says, I see well, it can't be helped, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: he hangs up and one of the guys is like,
- 3:58Speaker 1: what is it, Papa Dino. So the Lynx is out
- 4:01Speaker 1: of the cage that punk, and then we go to
- 4:04Speaker 1: the opening theme. Yes back from the opening, we get
- 4:10Speaker 1: a shot of the jail exterior and we hear a
- 4:14Speaker 1: voice that's definitely Max say you all packed up? And
- 4:18Speaker 1: we see Ash and Max in the cell and Ash says,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I've got nothing to pack. He's sitting on the bottom
- 4:25Speaker 1: bunk and he's just kind of staring at the ground
- 4:27Speaker 1: and Max thinks, why is he so down today? And
- 4:31Speaker 1: he starts to think about what happened right after Ash
- 4:35Speaker 1: left the visitation room and he was still with George,
- 4:38Speaker 1: and in the flashback, George says he seems like a
- 4:41Speaker 1: nice young man. The judge and jury may go easy
- 4:43Speaker 1: on him, and Max says, that's just what he wants
- 4:46Speaker 1: you to think. He tricked me to it first, and
- 4:49Speaker 1: now look and he points to the bandage on his
- 4:51Speaker 1: head and whoa, whoa, let's just stop there. Ash being
- 4:57Speaker 1: nice to George is trying to trick him. I'm sorry,
- 5:01Speaker 1: have you not heard of code switching? Max? Like, what
- 5:05Speaker 1: do you want him to do? Like threaten him or
- 5:08Speaker 1: spit on him? Like, obviously he's gonna be nice to
- 5:12Speaker 1: a lawyer that's trying to help him get out of jail, Like,
- 5:16Speaker 1: what's wrong with you anyway? Back to the anime? George
- 5:24Speaker 1: is like, since when did you become so cynical? He's
- 5:27Speaker 1: just a seventeen year old boy who's framed for murder.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And back to now. Max is staring at a very
- 5:33Speaker 1: sad looking Ash and he thinks, maybe I am overthinking
- 5:37Speaker 1: at all. Griff's death must have really gotten to him,
- 5:40Speaker 1: and then out loud, he says, cheer up, Ash. Once
- 5:43Speaker 1: I'm out of here, I'm gonna go after Banana Fish again.
- 5:46Speaker 1: You gave me a good lead. Ash is just silent,
- 5:49Speaker 1: still looking at the floor. Max continues, do you know
- 5:53Speaker 1: Golzan's as great of a bad guy as you could
- 5:55Speaker 1: hope for? I agree, and Ash says, I know, old
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know better than anyone, and he looks at Max,
- 6:02Speaker 1: You're out of your depth. A worried expression comes over
- 6:05Speaker 1: Max's face and he says you. And then we hear
- 6:10Speaker 1: a guard I guess somewhere say hey, they're here for you,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and Ash stands and his devious smirk returns to his
- 6:19Speaker 1: face and he says, see old man, and confidently struts
- 6:23Speaker 1: out of the cell, and on his way out, he
- 6:26Speaker 1: passes a bunch of guys who heckle him, of course,
- 6:28Speaker 1: because that is how it has to go. Banana fish.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Now we cut to Age, who is sitting on a
- 6:36Speaker 1: bench and he says, Ash, I'm so happy you're out.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And he gets up and walks over to him and
- 6:42Speaker 1: Ashes like, thanks for everything. Ag Ag smiles and maybe
- 6:46Speaker 1: blushes a little. And Charlie, who is there, says there
- 6:50Speaker 1: are a lot of things I need to ask you.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Ash just kind of shrugs. Then we cut to George
- 6:55Speaker 1: who was just talking to a guard like laughing with
- 6:58Speaker 1: him somewhere in the jail, and we Max say George
- 7:01Speaker 1: and he runs up to him and he's like hey,
- 7:03Speaker 1: he's like bent over catching his breath. Where's Ash? And
- 7:08Speaker 1: George was like he just left. Max is like, damn it,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I forgot I told him Gino killed his brother. He's
- 7:14Speaker 1: going to get revenge, and George is like, what did
- 7:17Speaker 1: you say? And then we cut back to Charlie, Ash
- 7:20Speaker 1: Ag and Shunci walking out of the jail. Ash says, hey, Charlie,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I've never told you this, but I actually have a
- 7:28Speaker 1: big brother. Charlie's eyes like widen and he's like trying
- 7:33Speaker 1: not to look at Ash and he says, really, I
- 7:38Speaker 1: never knew, geez. See, this is what happens when you
- 7:41Speaker 1: lie to people. Ash says, he must be so worried.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I want to go see him before we go see
- 7:47Speaker 1: the captain, and Charlie grimaces and he like puts his
- 7:52Speaker 1: hand on his head and he says, Ash, listen, I
- 7:56Speaker 1: can't keep it from you any longer. Ash stares at
- 7:59Speaker 1: him in astonishment, and Charlie says, I need you to
- 8:03Speaker 1: stay calm. We cut to George, who is running down
- 8:06Speaker 1: the hall, exhausted, and he's like calling someone on the
- 8:09Speaker 1: phone and he like bumps into a guard and he
- 8:11Speaker 1: says sorry, and he finally gets outside and he asks
- 8:15Speaker 1: one of the guards, like, where's Detective Dickinson And the
- 8:18Speaker 1: guard is like, he just left. George collapses to his
- 8:21Speaker 1: knees and groans, and we hear from his phone. Someone say, well, Jenkins,
- 8:27Speaker 1: say this is Jenkins. So George quickly puts it to
- 8:30Speaker 1: his ear and he's like Captain. Then we cut to
- 8:33Speaker 1: Ash and everybody in the car and Ash is sitting
- 8:36Speaker 1: in the front passenger seat. Obviously Charlie's driving because it's
- 8:39Speaker 1: his car, and Ash is like really hunched over and
- 8:42Speaker 1: he looks sad. Obviously, ag who is in the back seat,
- 8:47Speaker 1: says I'm sorry, Ash, it's my fall for being followed.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Charlie looks over and says you okay. Ash says, I
- 8:57Speaker 1: feel sick. Can you stop the car? I think you
- 9:02Speaker 1: should keep going. But whatever, Charlie pulls over and very
- 9:06Speaker 1: nicely goes around the car to help Ash out of
- 9:09Speaker 1: the passenger seat, and he you know, puts out his
- 9:13Speaker 1: hand and he says, here, grab my hand. And just
- 9:17Speaker 1: when he's about to help Ash out, his phone buzzes
- 9:20Speaker 1: and he is distracted and he reaches into his pocket
- 9:23Speaker 1: for it, and Ash grabs his gun and points it
- 9:25Speaker 1: at him. Charlie jumps back and says what are you doing?
- 9:30Speaker 1: Ash is like, sorry, you too, I need you to
- 9:33Speaker 1: get out. Shoonichi and Age you look at each other
- 9:35Speaker 1: and then they start to get out the car, and
- 9:38Speaker 1: Charlie says, don't be stupid. What do you think this
- 9:41Speaker 1: is gonna accomplish? So Ash says, ask your chatty friend.
- 9:44Speaker 1: He knows, and Charlie's like, Max, that idiot, calm down,
- 9:49Speaker 1: we know the shooters with Arthur. Ash possibly removes the
- 9:53Speaker 1: safety from the gun and says, I don't care. Charlie
- 9:56Speaker 1: gasps because the gun is still pointing at him, and
- 9:59Speaker 1: Ash continues, this is my problem and I'm going to
- 10:02Speaker 1: settle it myself now. Step aside, Shunichi is watching this
- 10:06Speaker 1: and he's clearly thinking about something, and then suddenly he's like,
- 10:10Speaker 1: watch out, it's Arthur, and Ash gasps and looks over,
- 10:13Speaker 1: and Charlie takes that opportunity to grab him and try
- 10:16Speaker 1: to wrestle the gun away from him and pull him
- 10:18Speaker 1: out of the passenger seat. Ash of course is like,
- 10:20Speaker 1: let go of me, and Shounichi goes to help Charlie
- 10:24Speaker 1: and Agi just staring like super concerned and confused, and
- 10:30Speaker 1: Charlie says, eBay, drag him out, and then Agi looks
- 10:33Speaker 1: kind of resolved, and he gets in the driver's seats
- 10:37Speaker 1: and he puts the car in drive and he takes
- 10:40Speaker 1: a deep breath and then he floors it. Charlie and
- 10:43Speaker 1: Shunichi are still hanging on to Ash as the car
- 10:46Speaker 1: starts to move, and Agi says sorry ebasan, and he
- 10:51Speaker 1: speeds up a little bit more, and Charlie and Shoonnci
- 10:54Speaker 1: are tossed to the ground and Shunichi hits a trash
- 10:57Speaker 1: can and like lands on his head, and then they're gone.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Now we cut to Ag who's driving, and Ash has
- 11:03Speaker 1: his feet up on the dash and they pass exits
- 11:08Speaker 1: thirteen for East seventy fourth Street, heading towards East seventy
- 11:11Speaker 1: third Street Queensboro Bridge East twenty five, which actually paused
- 11:16Speaker 1: here or so that I could tell you that, and
- 11:18Speaker 1: then I got super curious as to what that means.
- 11:20Speaker 1: So they are heading southbound on FDR Drive, which is
- 11:25Speaker 1: fucking perfect because if they are really coming from Riker's Islands,
- 11:29Speaker 1: they probably would have taken two seventy eights to FDR Drive.
- 11:33Speaker 1: If they're heading to, you know, the Lower east Side,
- 11:37Speaker 1: makes perfect sense to me. I was super excited when
- 11:40Speaker 1: I figured this out, and I told like my mom
- 11:42Speaker 1: and one of my friends, and they didn't care. So
- 11:46Speaker 1: now I have told other people, namely you and you
- 11:49Speaker 1: also may not care. Maybe you do care, but regardless,
- 11:53Speaker 1: you know I forced this knowledge on you. Yeah, so anyway,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Age says I bet based On is furious and Ash
- 12:02Speaker 1: says stop the car. AG. He's like what, but he
- 12:06Speaker 1: pulls over. Ash says, get out. AG. He's like, no,
- 12:10Speaker 1: this is my problem too, and he puts his head
- 12:13Speaker 1: down on the steering wheel and he's like, your brother
- 12:16Speaker 1: was shot right in front of my eyes, all because
- 12:18Speaker 1: I was followed after you told me to be careful.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Ash's like, Japanese people must be masochists. You feel responsible
- 12:25Speaker 1: for everything. He says, have it your way, cheez. Ag
- 12:31Speaker 1: sits up and he's like, really, so I can stay
- 12:33Speaker 1: with you? Huh? And Ash is like, but you better
- 12:38Speaker 1: look after your own ass and don't get in my way.
- 12:40Speaker 1: You're older than me, right. Ag looks a little embarrassed,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and he says, yeah, where to now? Back to Shinichi,
- 12:49Speaker 1: who is sitting at a booth in a restaurant looking
- 12:51Speaker 1: really worried, which makes sense because his sweet little Chon
- 12:56Speaker 1: has just committed grand theft auto, which is a pretty
- 13:00Speaker 1: big deal, especially since he took a detective's car. So yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 1: I would be worried. Too. Charlie sighs and sits down,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and he says he's mad as hell. I think I'm
- 13:14Speaker 1: gonna get demoated. Shonci says, I'm sorry. I never thought
- 13:19Speaker 1: he would have done such a thing. He's usually gentle
- 13:22Speaker 1: and shy. Ah, I still think he is. Charlie shrugs,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and he's like, it's okay, but what do we do now?
- 13:31Speaker 1: It's not really okay. Shoonci says, I know where they
- 13:35Speaker 1: might go. Then we cut to Arthur and Arthur says, Chinatown.
- 13:40Speaker 1: That's exactly where I thought. And we see that he
- 13:42Speaker 1: is with some guys and Dino in Dino's greenhouse and
- 13:46Speaker 1: Dino is like leaning over doing some stuff with his orchids,
- 13:50Speaker 1: and Arthur says he knows you can't do much in
- 13:52Speaker 1: that area. Shorter is there too, so what are we
- 13:55Speaker 1: gonna do? Dino is holding like a little scissor and
- 13:59Speaker 1: trimming the place and he says nothing. I got the
- 14:02Speaker 1: drug back. He is nothing now. No friends, he snips
- 14:06Speaker 1: the plant, No territories he snips again. No brothers he stands.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Who knew he had a brother, So that's what he
- 14:14Speaker 1: needed money for. Yeah, there's a bunch of cut lines
- 14:18Speaker 1: over here that we'll talk about in a couple of
- 14:20Speaker 1: episodes because they would be spoilers. But Arthur says, so
- 14:25Speaker 1: tell me of Poppatino. You two were on such good terms.
- 14:29Speaker 1: What got between you? What do he do that four
- 14:32Speaker 1: ey'd midget, the one called banana Fish? Why are you
- 14:34Speaker 1: looking after him like a virgin daughter? And then one
- 14:37Speaker 1: of the guy says, hey, watch what you're saying, and
- 14:40Speaker 1: Dino waves him off and says let him be. That
- 14:42Speaker 1: reaction was not supposed to be for those lines. Again,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I will tell you about this later, Dino says, why
- 14:48Speaker 1: are you so interested? Arthur's like, I told you I'm
- 14:53Speaker 1: a guy you could count on. I've got something Ash doesn't.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Dino says, ambition, You and Ash like fire and ice.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Arthur says, like they say in the movies, this town's
- 15:05Speaker 1: not big enough for the two of us. Diino says, fine,
- 15:08Speaker 1: I'll tell you, and the guy's like gasp, and Diino says,
- 15:13Speaker 1: Banana Fish is not a person. It's the name of
- 15:15Speaker 1: a drug. Obviously, Like did any of you get that immediately?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Because obviously it's got a really stupid name, and a
- 15:23Speaker 1: lot of drugs have really dumb street names, so I
- 15:25Speaker 1: like immediately it was like, well, obviously it's a drug.
- 15:28Speaker 1: It's the drug that we've been seeing, but now we
- 15:30Speaker 1: haven't confirmed, so that's great. Anyway. Arthur says what and
- 15:35Speaker 1: Diino says, it's something that'll change the world. That's all
- 15:38Speaker 1: I can tell you for now. Arthur says, interesting, and
- 15:42Speaker 1: we cut to China Town. Ash and ag are walking
- 15:45Speaker 1: down the street and it's really crowded because it's Chinatown,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and Age says a bit shorter, can't wait to see you.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Ash is only like half listening. He's scanning the area,
- 15:54Speaker 1: and he says, keep walking, don't look back. They walk
- 15:58Speaker 1: into an alley that told he doesn't really exist, and
- 16:02Speaker 1: some dude with a hoodie and like some brown hair
- 16:05Speaker 1: over his eyes notices that they've turned and he runs
- 16:08Speaker 1: to catch up with them. He turns the corner to
- 16:11Speaker 1: the alley and Ash is staring at him. He gulps.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Ash says, what do he wants? The guy looks like
- 16:17Speaker 1: he's about to try something, but Ash grabs him by
- 16:19Speaker 1: the front of his hoodie and he like knees him
- 16:22Speaker 1: in the stomach and the guy collapses. Ash grabs his
- 16:26Speaker 1: arm and he's holding it behind his back and he
- 16:29Speaker 1: lifts his head by his bangs and he says, who
- 16:31Speaker 1: sent you, Arthur? When a Goalsian's guy's and Agy is
- 16:35Speaker 1: just watching, like super concerned, and the guy says, I
- 16:38Speaker 1: don't know anything, and we hear a voice say we'll
- 16:41Speaker 1: take it from here. It's Shorter and some other thugs,
- 16:45Speaker 1: and Shorter says, I see you haven't lost your touch.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Great to have you back, Ash, huh. And two of
- 16:53Speaker 1: the guys that Shorter is with like lift up, the
- 16:55Speaker 1: guy with the hoodie, and the guy's like, please don't
- 16:58Speaker 1: kill me, and Ash to Shorter let him go after
- 17:01Speaker 1: he talks. Shorter's like, still acting like a saint, huh,
- 17:05Speaker 1: when will you? And Ash cuts him off and says,
- 17:07Speaker 1: I'm not saying he isn't worth killing, but it would
- 17:09Speaker 1: just be more trouble. Shorter says, why not, though, Let's
- 17:14Speaker 1: settle this once and for all. And we see the
- 17:17Speaker 1: gang leading that guy off, and Shorter says, Arthur thinks
- 17:20Speaker 1: he's some kind of big shot. We got to stop him.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Ash says, do you know what happened to Griffin's body?
- 17:27Speaker 1: Shorter and Agy look at each other, and Shorter frowns
- 17:30Speaker 1: and shrugs, and Ag says, no one came to pick
- 17:33Speaker 1: it up, so it's still at the corner. And Ash
- 17:36Speaker 1: is like, now that I'm on the run, he'll be
- 17:39Speaker 1: thrown into a public grave. Huh. AG looks down. So
- 17:43Speaker 1: I looked that up real quick for you guys, because
- 17:45Speaker 1: I know that that's true, but I wanted to see
- 17:48Speaker 1: what the timeline is. So I know, at least before
- 17:51Speaker 1: the pandemic, you had fifteen days to claim a body,
- 17:54Speaker 1: so that's not very long. And if the body isn't
- 17:58Speaker 1: claimed or there's no next of kim or it's unidentified,
- 18:04Speaker 1: it is taken to a small island like right outside
- 18:07Speaker 1: the Bronx called Heart's Island, which has a public cemetery
- 18:11Speaker 1: on it, and that's where he would be buried in
- 18:14Speaker 1: an unmarked grave, which is I mean a little bit sad.
- 18:18Speaker 1: It's very sad. What am I saying? This is horribly sad,
- 18:23Speaker 1: even for me as someone who doesn't believe in anything
- 18:26Speaker 1: after death and thinks it's just the body. Something like,
- 18:29Speaker 1: really sad about not being able to take care of
- 18:31Speaker 1: your loved ones and have them end up somewhere completely anonymous.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So yeah, yeah, I don't know anyway, Ash says, back
- 18:41Speaker 1: out now, Shorter, I'll settle this myself. Shorter is like,
- 18:44Speaker 1: what the hell I will? You can't do anything alone.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Ash says, this is my problem. It doesn't concern you.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Shorter is like seething now, and he's like, dumb ass,
- 18:54Speaker 1: it's my problem too. Arthur's killed enough of my guys already.
- 18:58Speaker 1: You go alone and you'll just get killed two. You'll
- 19:00Speaker 1: die for nothing. Ash kind of looks down, kind of concerned,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and Shorter continues, you won't get any revenge for the
- 19:08Speaker 1: guy's or skip. Ash looks back up and says fine.
- 19:12Speaker 1: He holds out his hand. Let's do this together, and
- 19:15Speaker 1: they do some really cool secret handshake and Ag is
- 19:17Speaker 1: like really impressed anyway. Shorter Shorter shorter than chuckles and
- 19:23Speaker 1: he says, that's the spirit. I've got to get my
- 19:26Speaker 1: bit of action. We need some more quiet to figure
- 19:28Speaker 1: out a plan. Cops are lounging around my place. AG
- 19:32Speaker 1: looks confused, and Shorter continues, so is eBay, I heard
- 19:37Speaker 1: what you did, Ag. My sister told me all about it,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and Ag says sis, and he remembers the short haired
- 19:43Speaker 1: woman that works at Chong Day, who I think I
- 19:46Speaker 1: told you her name was Nadia. I think it's Madia
- 19:48Speaker 1: with an M if I'm correct, and Ag says she's
- 19:53Speaker 1: your big sister, and Shorter says, yeah, so what, You're
- 19:56Speaker 1: the one who started all this, and that's all you
- 19:58Speaker 1: gotta say. Now we go to chang Dai, where Madia
- 20:02Speaker 1: is pouring Charlie some tea. It's really strange because in
- 20:05Speaker 1: the manga this conversation is with Jenkins and Madia. But whatever.
- 20:09Speaker 1: So Charlie says, it must be tough having such a
- 20:12Speaker 1: troublesome brother, and Madia says, he hasn't come home for
- 20:16Speaker 1: a while. Now. I'm pretty sure Shorta just said that
- 20:19Speaker 1: you told him a bunch of things. But all right,
- 20:22Speaker 1: some bad men are after him, and Charlie says, Arthur huh.
- 20:27Speaker 1: And Madia is like, but the cops don't do anything.
- 20:30Speaker 1: You just let the street kids kill each other. Charlie's like,
- 20:34Speaker 1: it's not that we don't want to do anything, because
- 20:37Speaker 1: we do want to, but we don't have any proof.
- 20:39Speaker 1: We're frustrated too, cops. Then we go to a place
- 20:44Speaker 1: that looks kind of Japanese, but I guess it's supposed
- 20:47Speaker 1: to be Chinese. So yeah, Shorter Ash and Age are
- 20:51Speaker 1: sitting in a room and Ash says, AG go back
- 20:55Speaker 1: to eBay. He's worried, and AG's like, I'll probably worry him,
- 20:59Speaker 1: even I can't do anything and I might get in
- 21:02Speaker 1: your way, but if I leave now, I'll never forgive myself.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Shorter looks kind of confused, and Ag says, I used
- 21:09Speaker 1: to be a pole vaulter pack in Japan, and Short's like,
- 21:12Speaker 1: for real, who's a thought? And Ash says, I saw him.
- 21:16Speaker 1: He saved my life and he's smiling and AG's like,
- 21:20Speaker 1: but I can't jump anymore. Ash says, of course you can.
- 21:25Speaker 1: You did, we saw you and Age's like, not like that,
- 21:29Speaker 1: I mean as an athlete. And then we get a
- 21:31Speaker 1: flashback of Age dropping his pole and he's on the
- 21:33Speaker 1: ground holding his ankle, and a voice says, are you okay, Ag,
- 21:38Speaker 1: And then we see him in a cast and then
- 21:40Speaker 1: back on the field and he takes a deep breath,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and Shunichi is there and he's getting his camera ready
- 21:47Speaker 1: and he starts to take pictures as Ag runs towards
- 21:50Speaker 1: the you know thing that you vault over, whatever that's called,
- 21:56Speaker 1: And just as Ag is getting the point where he
- 21:58Speaker 1: would need to vault. I guess he just stops. And
- 22:03Speaker 1: then we cut to him a little bit later, sitting
- 22:06Speaker 1: with his head down near the fields, and we have
- 22:09Speaker 1: a voiceover that says he Basson saw how depressed I
- 22:13Speaker 1: was and brought me here with him, And then we
- 22:15Speaker 1: cut back to now and Ag says, so, I don't
- 22:18Speaker 1: want to quit anymore. I want to see this through
- 22:20Speaker 1: with my own eyes. That's I wish you would just
- 22:24Speaker 1: pull vault to not get involved with criminals. But sure,
- 22:29Speaker 1: Shorter says, so we've all got our reasons. It's all
- 22:33Speaker 1: up to you, Ash. Now we cut to morning. I
- 22:36Speaker 1: guess Age is sleeping on a bed of some sort
- 22:40Speaker 1: and Ash says, AG, wake up. AG. AG turns over,
- 22:46Speaker 1: but he doesn't open his eyes, and he just says
- 22:47Speaker 1: a few more minutes. So Ash taps him on the
- 22:50Speaker 1: cheek with a gun and Ag opens his eyes, shoots
- 22:54Speaker 1: up and like screams. He like doesn't know what's happening
- 22:57Speaker 1: for a second, and then he realizes it's Ash and
- 23:00Speaker 1: he says, don't do that. You scared me. Also, like
- 23:03Speaker 1: gun safety one oh one, you're supposed to treat all
- 23:05Speaker 1: guns like they're loaded, even if they're not loaded, and
- 23:08Speaker 1: I think that means not putting one in your friend's face.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Ash so not pleased with that, but he is a
- 23:17Speaker 1: criminal child, so whatever. So anyway, Ash holds out the
- 23:22Speaker 1: gun and says, this is yours. It's automatic, so it's easy. Technically,
- 23:27Speaker 1: it's semi automatic. That's like a standard kind of pistol,
- 23:33Speaker 1: like maybe like a nine millimeter or something. So those
- 23:36Speaker 1: are semi automatic. It means when you pull the trigger,
- 23:39Speaker 1: a bullet comes out of the gun. That's all that means.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Automatic would mean that you just pull the trigger and
- 23:46Speaker 1: bullets would just come out constantly. I think, I don't know, guys.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I felt like I was really confident about that, and
- 23:51Speaker 1: now I'm confused. I think I'm right. Anyway, then he
- 23:55Speaker 1: is like giving him a demonstration, and he's like, this
- 23:57Speaker 1: is the safety you loaded. Here, it's the fighting starts.
- 24:00Speaker 1: I can't protect you. You have to protect yourself. AG
- 24:04Speaker 1: looks worried, and he kind of looks down and he
- 24:06Speaker 1: says okay, and Ash is like, don't look so worried,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and he stands breakfast is in five minutes. It Shorter's
- 24:13Speaker 1: special Chinese breakfast. Come on down, and then he leaves.
- 24:17Speaker 1: AG is still sitting on the bed and he's looking
- 24:19Speaker 1: at the gun. He picks it up and aims it,
- 24:21Speaker 1: and he says, bang ag. Now we cut to a
- 24:26Speaker 1: gun in a case, and a voice says Smith and
- 24:29Speaker 1: Wesson three fifty seven magnum three and a half inch barrel,
- 24:33Speaker 1: just the way you like it. Ash and Shorter are
- 24:35Speaker 1: in an opulent looking office type room with this dude
- 24:39Speaker 1: at a desk and plenty of security. And Ash picks
- 24:42Speaker 1: up the gun and he says, how'd you know? And
- 24:45Speaker 1: the guy at the desk says, Shorter talks about you
- 24:47Speaker 1: all the time. Huh, you seem rather young to be
- 24:51Speaker 1: a gang boss. Ash is still checking out the gun
- 24:54Speaker 1: and he says, look, who's talking. You sure don't look
- 24:57Speaker 1: like a banker either. Mister Lee smiles and says, I see.
- 25:03Speaker 1: I probably shouldn't treat you like a child. Do you
- 25:05Speaker 1: need anything else? And Ash says, first of all, thanks
- 25:09Speaker 1: for the hideout. He stands and walks over to mister Lee.
- 25:13Speaker 1: But let me tell you one thing. I have no
- 25:15Speaker 1: interest whatsoever in your affairs concerning Goalsine, if that's what
- 25:19Speaker 1: you're after, I'm out. And mister Lee says, we've come
- 25:23Speaker 1: this far without the help of any other races, but
- 25:26Speaker 1: recently Dino Golesine's been going a bit too far, So
- 25:30Speaker 1: if anyone's going to go up against him, we just
- 25:32Speaker 1: want to wish them luck. Ash says, understandable. I'll need
- 25:37Speaker 1: a truck then, huh. Then we cut to an exterior
- 25:41Speaker 1: shot of some kind of fancy I guess Chinese style
- 25:43Speaker 1: house that's clearly in New York City because you can
- 25:45Speaker 1: see buildings behind it, and they're on like this balcony
- 25:49Speaker 1: or deck over some water and it's night And by
- 25:52Speaker 1: them I mean ash Agy and Shorter, and they are
- 25:56Speaker 1: clearly having a discussion that we are coming in the middle,
- 26:01Speaker 1: and it is a big deal. So pay attention. Not
- 26:04Speaker 1: that you're not. Ag says club Cod and Ashes like
- 26:09Speaker 1: a seafood restaurant. Shorter says, Gullsine goes out for seafood,
- 26:15Speaker 1: and Ashes like. They don't just serve seafood, they sell
- 26:18Speaker 1: other living beings to humans. Great Age is looking appropriately concerned,
- 26:26Speaker 1: and he says humans, and Ash continues, the place is
- 26:30Speaker 1: run by Dino. It's a secret club that combines his
- 26:33Speaker 1: favorite pastime with business. The merchandise is kids, and we
- 26:38Speaker 1: get this black and white like still photograph type shot
- 26:41Speaker 1: of some dude with a suit and he is taking
- 26:44Speaker 1: a kid somewhere, like to a car, and the image
- 26:47Speaker 1: is drawn on like it's part of like evidence on
- 26:51Speaker 1: like a wall that like police are trying to figure
- 26:54Speaker 1: out or something. And anyway, the dude is circled in
- 26:57Speaker 1: red and there's like an arrow to it and it's
- 27:00Speaker 1: number six ninety seven. Senator William scott Age forty eight,
- 27:04Speaker 1: hair color blonde, eye color gray began to frequent the
- 27:08Speaker 1: club three years ago. This is his forty eighth time. Shit,
- 27:11Speaker 1: that's a lot of times. And then like part of
- 27:14Speaker 1: this is out of the frame, so it says something
- 27:16Speaker 1: like he prefers young boys the age of ten with
- 27:22Speaker 1: something eyes and blonde hair, So that's not good. That's
- 27:29Speaker 1: a senator anyway, Ash continues, most customers are big shots,
- 27:33Speaker 1: so it's top secret that way. Dino has control over
- 27:36Speaker 1: these people in shorders like sickening. We see a billboard
- 27:40Speaker 1: now of lots of missing kids that are all boys,
- 27:45Speaker 1: and Ash continues, he catches runaway kids like me to
- 27:48Speaker 1: sell off his merchandise. They keep him strung out all
- 27:51Speaker 1: the time so they can't run away. Most of them
- 27:53Speaker 1: only live a few years. That's how they keep it
- 27:55Speaker 1: a secret. And Agy says that's terrible. I agree, that's
- 28:00Speaker 1: really terrible. And also Ash just said, like me, So
- 28:05Speaker 1: what does that mean? Does that mean that he was
- 28:08Speaker 1: a runaway? Obviously, it means he was a runaway? So
- 28:11Speaker 1: does like me just mean runaway kids like me? Or
- 28:15Speaker 1: does it mean that he was involved in this? It
- 28:19Speaker 1: kind of sounds like it means he was involved in
- 28:21Speaker 1: this because we do know that he was taken off
- 28:25Speaker 1: the streets by Dino when he was eleven, so kind
- 28:29Speaker 1: of thinking that this is his experience. But then why
- 28:34Speaker 1: is he still alive and why is he out here
- 28:36Speaker 1: roaming around shooting people instead of you know? So I
- 28:40Speaker 1: guess we're gonna find out anyway, Continuing right along, Shorter says,
- 28:46Speaker 1: so he'll be there, and Ashes like every fifteenth of
- 28:50Speaker 1: the month. Again, he knows way too much about this.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Now we go to Shunichi, who is on a couch
- 28:56Speaker 1: drinking some sort of hot beverage and I guess this
- 28:59Speaker 1: is Charlie's a part. And Charlie is like, Okay, I'll
- 29:02Speaker 1: be there soon, and he hangs up the phone. I
- 29:04Speaker 1: guess he was on the phone, and she needs. He
- 29:06Speaker 1: says something up. Charlie's like, Max is out of prison,
- 29:09Speaker 1: but he disappeared and she needs. She's like what, yeah,
- 29:12Speaker 1: she need. He's not having fun and Charlie's like, poor
- 29:15Speaker 1: mister Scott, he's laid up in bed because of all this.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I'm going back to the station and she needs. She's like, okay, Charlie,
- 29:22Speaker 1: who's like opening the door to leave now, says I
- 29:25Speaker 1: know you're worried about your little agy, but try and
- 29:28Speaker 1: get some sleep. Your eyes are bloodshot. And he leaves
- 29:31Speaker 1: and she needs. He's like, leave me alone, geez, and
- 29:34Speaker 1: he SIPs some like coffee or whatever it is. Then
- 29:37Speaker 1: there's a knock on the door and she needs. He's
- 29:39Speaker 1: like what forgot something? And the door opens. She Needi's
- 29:43Speaker 1: like Max and Max covers Shoonichi's mouth with his hand
- 29:48Speaker 1: and he says we're leaving now, and she she's like
- 29:51Speaker 1: what where too? And Max says Goldie's gonna show up
- 29:55Speaker 1: at a police call a club cod Ash'll definitely go
- 29:57Speaker 1: there and she needs. She's like, then, each I'll be
- 30:00Speaker 1: there too, are you positive? And Max says, I'm a journalist.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Remember I know about Golzene. Trust me. He gives like
- 30:07Speaker 1: a thumbs up and winks. And now they're walking into
- 30:09Speaker 1: the hallway and he says, let's go. We have to
- 30:12Speaker 1: be there before the cops catch on. Now they are driving,
- 30:15Speaker 1: and Max is thinking, that crazy little boy trying to
- 30:18Speaker 1: take on a mafia don all by himself. That's why
- 30:21Speaker 1: I can't leave him alone. This is my fight too.
- 30:24Speaker 1: His enemies are my enemies. Then we see someone looking
- 30:27Speaker 1: through what I thought was a telescope. It is actually
- 30:29Speaker 1: binoculars at Club Cot, which is just a looking place
- 30:33Speaker 1: restaurant thing. It's Ash and he says it looks like
- 30:37Speaker 1: a plain old restaurant so it doesn't arouse suspicions. He
- 30:40Speaker 1: only brings a few of his men with him so
- 30:41Speaker 1: he doesn't scare off the customers, and AG says, so
- 30:44Speaker 1: that's why you shows today. Ash continues, I wish I
- 30:48Speaker 1: didn't have to ask Lee for help though, and she's like,
- 30:51Speaker 1: but he didn't like goalsin, so he's on our side, right,
- 30:54Speaker 1: And Ash says, he's not that naive. He's just interested
- 30:58Speaker 1: in what came between me and the old man. And
- 31:00Speaker 1: then we see there on a roof, which makes sense okay.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Ash continues, he knows all about what went on. Short
- 31:06Speaker 1: is like, yeah, his men are the ones who found
- 31:08Speaker 1: out that you'd broken loose, and Age's like, I can't
- 31:10Speaker 1: trust anyone now, and Ash says, no, it's not that bad.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Then they are inside somewhere which I think is a garage,
- 31:17Speaker 1: and Ashes loading a gun and he says, let's go.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Shorter drives up in this big tractor trailer type truck
- 31:24Speaker 1: and he nods to Ag who's in the passenger seat,
- 31:28Speaker 1: and they drive off. Now, a car pulls up to
- 31:30Speaker 1: Club Cod and Dino gets out and he's walking towards
- 31:33Speaker 1: the entrance with three of his men, and then they
- 31:36Speaker 1: hear like a crash and a scream, and they look
- 31:38Speaker 1: over and a truck. The truck is barreling through these
- 31:41Speaker 1: like outside tables and like headed straight for them, and
- 31:45Speaker 1: two of the guys get in front of Dino and
- 31:47Speaker 1: are about to shoot, but before they can do anything,
- 31:49Speaker 1: they are shot down, and Dino looks up and sees
- 31:52Speaker 1: that standing on top of the truck is Ash. And
- 31:55Speaker 1: we get this really nice shot of Ash as the
- 31:59Speaker 1: truck is out of like a shadowed area into the sunlight.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Just looks really cool, and Dino's like, Ash, you want
- 32:06Speaker 1: me out of the picture that much. I mean yeah,
- 32:10Speaker 1: And Ash is like Dino and he is about to shoot,
- 32:14Speaker 1: but as he is going to he gets shot in
- 32:17Speaker 1: the right shoulder and he still shoots the gun, but
- 32:21Speaker 1: it knocks his aim off and he hits Dino, but
- 32:24Speaker 1: only in the shoulder as well. Ash tumbles onto the
- 32:27Speaker 1: roof and as he falls over, he catches sight of
- 32:31Speaker 1: Arthur and his crew in a window nearby, and he's like, Arthur,
- 32:34Speaker 1: you bastard. And now the truck is getting shot out
- 32:37Speaker 1: and they are running through like tables and shit and
- 32:41Speaker 1: like losing control. And then they hid into something that
- 32:44Speaker 1: I don't know what it is, maybe like a closed
- 32:46Speaker 1: concession stand or something, and Ash is thrown from the roof.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Now I'm gonna just say this. In the manga, the
- 32:53Speaker 1: reason that Shorter lost control of the truck is because
- 32:56Speaker 1: he had blood in his eyes. But whatever, we'll just
- 32:59Speaker 1: leave that part out. So we cut back to Dino
- 33:02Speaker 1: and like one of the guys is like holding him,
- 33:04Speaker 1: and Dino is like ripping his shoulder and he says,
- 33:07Speaker 1: get him, catch him alive and drag him to me,
- 33:10Speaker 1: And we cut back to the truck that is crashed
- 33:13Speaker 1: and stopped, and Ag is kind of I guess he'd
- 33:18Speaker 1: kind of fallen over and he's coming to his senses
- 33:20Speaker 1: and he says Shorter, and we see Shorter whose head
- 33:23Speaker 1: is bleeding in a couple of places, and he's like,
- 33:25Speaker 1: it's just a scratch. And then someone opens the passenger
- 33:28Speaker 1: side door and Ag like aims the gun and Shorter's
- 33:30Speaker 1: like AG and we see that it's this dude with
- 33:33Speaker 1: a knife and Ag is just staring like panicked and
- 33:36Speaker 1: not doing anything like frozen, and Shorter, you know, grabs
- 33:40Speaker 1: the gun as Age is also holding it and shoots
- 33:43Speaker 1: the guy, and Max and Shoonici arrive. Then great, guys,
- 33:46Speaker 1: you're late again, and Max stops the car and he's like,
- 33:50Speaker 1: damn it, they've already started. Yeah. Shonici gets out and
- 33:52Speaker 1: he's like a Chohan and Max says, hey, stay put,
- 33:56Speaker 1: but he doesn't, and Max also gets out and they
- 33:59Speaker 1: run over and Shunichi is like, chan, are you okay?
- 34:03Speaker 1: And Ash, who is hiding behind something but we don't
- 34:06Speaker 1: really see yet, notices something and he shoots some guy down,
- 34:10Speaker 1: and Max looks around for where the shot came from,
- 34:12Speaker 1: and he sees Ash behind some of the tables that
- 34:16Speaker 1: they hit into and they're all broken now, and Max says,
- 34:19Speaker 1: Ash the river no. Ash gasps and Shorter grabs AG's
- 34:24Speaker 1: arm and he's like run, Agy, and they and Shunichi
- 34:27Speaker 1: and Max take off, and a bunch of guys are
- 34:30Speaker 1: starting to like run their way and they're shooting at them.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Shorter and Ag and Max jump into the river, which
- 34:36Speaker 1: by the way, is the East River, and Ash kind
- 34:40Speaker 1: of is still hanging back behind those tables. He waits
- 34:43Speaker 1: a second, then he's like shooting at some of the guys,
- 34:45Speaker 1: and then he makes a run for it and he
- 34:47Speaker 1: jumps really beautifully, good job animators into the East River.
- 34:53Speaker 1: The guys run up to I guess the end of
- 34:56Speaker 1: the pier, and they're not super happy, and one of
- 34:59Speaker 1: the guys is like, damn, and he aimed at the water.
- 35:01Speaker 1: They're like under the water, we cannot see them. But
- 35:04Speaker 1: then another guy is like, stop, we need to catch
- 35:07Speaker 1: him alive. And Arthur, who is there now too, says
- 35:10Speaker 1: they can't be far search the eastwharf, so they jumped
- 35:13Speaker 1: into the East River. I want to clear up kind
- 35:16Speaker 1: of where a lot of this is happening. First of all,
- 35:19Speaker 1: so in the manga, this was happening right outside of
- 35:23Speaker 1: the Fulton Fish Market, which is kind of important because
- 35:26Speaker 1: the fish market until about two thousand and one was
- 35:29Speaker 1: basically just controlled by the mob. So it actually works
- 35:34Speaker 1: really well that Club Cod would be right near the
- 35:38Speaker 1: fish market since it's probably in this universe controlled by
- 35:42Speaker 1: the Corsican mafia. But that is not in the anime,
- 35:46Speaker 1: which honestly is not a bad thing, because the Fulton
- 35:50Speaker 1: Fish Market closed in two thousand and five in that
- 35:53Speaker 1: location and they moved to the Bronx, So if you
- 35:56Speaker 1: put any of that information in there now, it would
- 35:58Speaker 1: have been weird and confusing, But based on where they're
- 36:02Speaker 1: supposed to be, which is around Peer sixteen, they absolutely
- 36:06Speaker 1: jumped into the East River. Now, the East River used
- 36:10Speaker 1: to be super, super gross, and in the eighties it
- 36:12Speaker 1: was gross, Like I'd be worried that them jumping in
- 36:15Speaker 1: there with wounds would mean serious bacterial infections. But actually
- 36:21Speaker 1: the East River isn't as gross as it used to be,
- 36:23Speaker 1: so unless they just had a big storm and all
- 36:26Speaker 1: of the sewage and stuff poured into the river or something,
- 36:29Speaker 1: it might actually not totally kill them. So yay, I guess,
- 36:34Speaker 1: And now you know, anyway, we cut to Shorter shaking
- 36:38Speaker 1: himself off, and he's like, ew, it stinks. And we
- 36:42Speaker 1: see that everyone is out of the water, kind of
- 36:44Speaker 1: on the ground, and Shunichi's like, where are we and
- 36:49Speaker 1: Ash says one of the inlets. They can't see us
- 36:52Speaker 1: because we're behind the warehouses, and Shorter is like, agy's
- 36:55Speaker 1: passed out. He is by the way, which isn't great.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Max is also like still just trying to catch his
- 37:01Speaker 1: breath and she says, hey, Sean, wake up. Max is like,
- 37:06Speaker 1: we have to get out of here. Ash stands and
- 37:11Speaker 1: he starts to just walk off, and Max is like, hey,
- 37:14Speaker 1: where are you going? Are you crazy? Ash stops with
- 37:18Speaker 1: his back to him, and he says, shut up, and
- 37:20Speaker 1: he turns and he says this is none of your
- 37:23Speaker 1: and Max just punches him in the face and he
- 37:27Speaker 1: is just down and out cold. Geez. Max just kind
- 37:32Speaker 1: of lifts him over his shoulder and he's like, you've
- 37:34Speaker 1: caused enough trouble for today, you little punk Shorts like
- 37:38Speaker 1: old man sure is rough, and then we hear some
- 37:42Speaker 1: sirens in the distance kind of as we're fading out
- 37:44Speaker 1: of the scene, and we hear a cop dispatch saying
- 37:47Speaker 1: shots fired at Fulton Street by the Pure District, so
- 37:50Speaker 1: we know that it is still supposed to be in
- 37:51Speaker 1: the same location that it was in the manga. There's
- 37:56Speaker 1: just no fish market anymore. Now we see Dino, who's
- 37:59Speaker 1: all bandaged up and like sitting in bed, and there
- 38:03Speaker 1: are a bunch of guys standing around him, and these
- 38:05Speaker 1: two dudes are bowing before him. And as soon as
- 38:08Speaker 1: I saw that, I was like in New York No,
- 38:12Speaker 1: so I just like grabbed the manga. And they're not
- 38:14Speaker 1: bowing in the manga. So that's super strange change and
- 38:17Speaker 1: doesn't make any sense. They should not be bowing anyway.
- 38:21Speaker 1: One of the guys says, forgive us, Papa, and Dino says,
- 38:25Speaker 1: so he escaped again. That'll be the last time. I
- 38:28Speaker 1: don't care what you do. Catch him alive, and Arthur's like,
- 38:32Speaker 1: why can't we just kill him and get it over with.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Dino says, shut up, I won't let anyone else have him.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Arthur looks concerned, me too. Dino looks terrifying, and he says,
- 38:45Speaker 1: tear his limbs off, scoop out his eyes. I don't care,
- 38:48Speaker 1: but bring him to me alive. He's mine. Fuck Arthur
- 38:53Speaker 1: and me look horrified now because that is a lot.
- 38:58Speaker 1: He's a little bit too possessive over Ash and also
- 39:02Speaker 1: wants to hurt him, so not feeling really good about
- 39:05Speaker 1: how this is going for our main set of characters.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Ash opens his eyes and it looks like he might
- 39:12Speaker 1: be on a couch and he's bandaged up. He sits
- 39:15Speaker 1: and he winces and grabs his shoulder, and at this point,
- 39:18Speaker 1: the ending theme starts up, so we know we're not
- 39:20Speaker 1: gonna have ending animation. Oh well, we hear Max say
- 39:24Speaker 1: you up. Ash looks over and he says this place,
- 39:29Speaker 1: and Max, who is bandaging Shorter's head and giving him stitches,
- 39:34Speaker 1: says it's my hideout and Shorter's like yo, Ash, and
- 39:39Speaker 1: Max says this is gonna sting, and Shorter makes some
- 39:41Speaker 1: sort of unhappy noise and Max continues, I wanted to
- 39:46Speaker 1: leave today as planned, and Ash says leave. Max says
- 39:51Speaker 1: to Cape Cod where you and Griff grew up. Ash
- 39:55Speaker 1: like pauses here. He doesn't say anything for a second,
- 39:58Speaker 1: but he's clearly not thrilled, but it's kind of a
- 40:02Speaker 1: super quiet reaction, and he says why and Max is like,
- 40:07Speaker 1: for whatever letters and pictures Griff left no one else
- 40:11Speaker 1: knows about this banana fish. Ash looks away and then
- 40:15Speaker 1: looks over at Agy sleeping. Max is now cleaning like
- 40:19Speaker 1: his sewing suiture stuff in the sink, and he says,
- 40:22Speaker 1: we're leaving as soon as the sunsets get some rest.
- 40:25Speaker 1: It looks like it might be getting close to sunset
- 40:28Speaker 1: there because there's like a pretty decent golden light in
- 40:31Speaker 1: the room, so I don't think that they have too long.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Ash just kind of walks off somewhere and Shunichi says
- 40:39Speaker 1: he might do something crazy again. Max is like, don't worry.
- 40:43Speaker 1: His want to learn about banana fish is too strong
- 40:45Speaker 1: and shorts like he doesn't seem to want to go home.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Max says, I guess home isn't somewhere you want to
- 40:52Speaker 1: remember if you ran away from it. Next we see
- 40:56Speaker 1: Ash sitting at the edge of like a roof and
- 40:59Speaker 1: the sun is setting and it looks super fucking gorgeous,
- 41:03Speaker 1: by the way, great job background art people. He buries
- 41:07Speaker 1: his face in his knees and we cut to the
- 41:11Speaker 1: I guess concrete below him, and we see tears start
- 41:15Speaker 1: to fall onto it, and he just sits there quietly
- 41:19Speaker 1: as tears stream down his face. And he says Griff
- 41:24Speaker 1: and then we get the title card from Death to
- 41:26Speaker 1: Morning and that's it. We did it sort of kind
- 41:31Speaker 1: of okay, closing notes, Let's see what did I need
- 41:35Speaker 1: to tell you guys about. So this is gonna be interesting, right.
- 41:38Speaker 1: We're apparently gonna go to Cape cod which is where
- 41:42Speaker 1: we just found out Ash and Griffin grew up. So
- 41:46Speaker 1: we're gonna see probably their parents, if they have parents,
- 41:50Speaker 1: and maybe we can figure out why Ash ran away
- 41:53Speaker 1: when he was super young, like eleven or something, because
- 41:57Speaker 1: I think that would give us some insight into what
- 41:59Speaker 1: the fuck is going on. And also keep Cut is
- 42:02Speaker 1: not like super close to New York City, so I
- 42:05Speaker 1: wonder why he settled there and he didn't go to
- 42:06Speaker 1: like Boston. But hey, I don't know. It should be
- 42:10Speaker 1: really interesting, And by should be, I mean I love
- 42:14Speaker 1: episode six, So I am so excited to just even
- 42:18Speaker 1: take notes on it, And of course I'm excited for
- 42:21Speaker 1: you to watch it and then meet to talk about
- 42:23Speaker 1: it with you because I have a lot of theories
- 42:26Speaker 1: and feelings that I would like to express to you.
- 42:30Speaker 1: But back to this episode, I don't think there's much
- 42:33Speaker 1: that really needs to be said, except that ag has
- 42:35Speaker 1: gotten himself in really deep shit, stealing that car, hanging
- 42:41Speaker 1: out with these criminals, being chased by the mafia. Kind
- 42:45Speaker 1: of worried about him, but I understand that he wants
- 42:49Speaker 1: to see things through now and that he likes ash probably,
- 42:54Speaker 1: so I mean, it's what he wants. So with all
- 42:59Speaker 1: this talk about human trafficking of homeless youth, I thought
- 43:02Speaker 1: it would be appropriate to read some statistics from a
- 43:05Speaker 1: survey on homeless youth in human trafficking that was conducted
- 43:10Speaker 1: by UPenn University of Pennsylvania, and they partnered with an
- 43:15Speaker 1: organization that I cannot remember the name of right now,
- 43:17Speaker 1: and I don't know if I have it saved anywhere
- 43:19Speaker 1: on my computer, so sorry guys. So this was a
- 43:22Speaker 1: study of homeless youth in Philly, DC and Phoenix. But
- 43:27Speaker 1: as far as I can tell, like doing some research,
- 43:29Speaker 1: the numbers that you're gonna hear are pretty consistent. So they,
- 43:33Speaker 1: I guess, spoke with homeless or formally homeless youth and
- 43:37Speaker 1: twenty percent of them said that they were victims of
- 43:40Speaker 1: trafficking of some sort. And you can break down trafficking
- 43:44Speaker 1: into labor trafficking and sex trafficking, So labor trafficking was
- 43:48Speaker 1: the smaller portion of that that was six percent. And
- 43:53Speaker 1: when we're talking about labor, we're basically just talking about drugs.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I think it's like ninety percent or something is specifically
- 44:01Speaker 1: drug related labor trafficking. And then the bigger percentage, of course,
- 44:07Speaker 1: the seventeen percent out of that twenty is sex trafficking. Anyway,
- 44:13Speaker 1: speaking specifically about sex trafficking because it's relevance. Out of
- 44:18Speaker 1: those homeless youth, ninety five percent of them said that
- 44:21Speaker 1: they had a history of abuse as a child or neglect,
- 44:27Speaker 1: and out of that ninety five percent, forty nine percent
- 44:31Speaker 1: said that it was sexual abuse. And according to these kids,
- 44:36Speaker 1: when they approached adults about the abuse, only thirty six
- 44:41Speaker 1: percent of them saw action taken on their behalf, which
- 44:45Speaker 1: I assume would make you not trust authority anymore if
- 44:50Speaker 1: no one is going to help you, So that's great.
- 44:53Speaker 1: I also don't know why the link with abuse is
- 44:57Speaker 1: so high to trafficking. I can only assume that a
- 45:00Speaker 1: disproportioned amount of homeless youth have just have a history
- 45:04Speaker 1: of abuse, because I mean, most people aren't on the
- 45:07Speaker 1: street because it's the most awesome place, right So I
- 45:13Speaker 1: guess that would make sense. Also, a disproportionate amount of
- 45:18Speaker 1: youth victims of sex trafficking identified as LGBTQ plus, and
- 45:24Speaker 1: that should make fucking perfect sense because approximately forty percent
- 45:29Speaker 1: of all homeless youth identify as LGBTQ plus, which compared
- 45:34Speaker 1: to the general population is only seven percent. So we've
- 45:38Speaker 1: already have a disproportionately high amount of queer people on
- 45:43Speaker 1: the street, so of course they're going to be targeted more.
- 45:48Speaker 1: And then the last thing that I thought was interesting
- 45:50Speaker 1: about this study was that fourteen percent of homeless youth,
- 45:56Speaker 1: not trafficked youth just in general, said that they engaged
- 45:59Speaker 1: in survival sex, which is probably exactly what it sounds
- 46:04Speaker 1: like to you. It is trading sex for food or
- 46:08Speaker 1: a place to sleep, that kind of thing. Oh and
- 46:11Speaker 1: forty one percent of sex trafficking survivors said that they
- 46:15Speaker 1: were approached on their very first night on the streets.
- 46:18Speaker 1: So this is I guess fast, guys. It's obviously a
- 46:24Speaker 1: very vulnerable population. You know, you have people who are
- 46:27Speaker 1: on the street, they don't have access to, you know,
- 46:29Speaker 1: basic needs and support systems sometimes, and then they have
- 46:35Speaker 1: these people who seem like they're trying to help and
- 46:40Speaker 1: being young and maybe not having as much experience. It's
- 46:45Speaker 1: understandable that someone in this position would want to trust
- 46:48Speaker 1: someone who looks like they're trying to help them, especially
- 46:51Speaker 1: you would think when they're new on the street and
- 46:53Speaker 1: they're not really sure what they're going to do. So yeah,
- 46:56Speaker 1: it's really incredibly fucked up, and it totally happens in
- 47:02Speaker 1: case for some reason you were thinking that it doesn't,
- 47:04Speaker 1: but I don't think you were, but just in case.
- 47:07Speaker 1: So I really just wanted to tell you about this
- 47:09Speaker 1: horrible shit because it's obviously relevant to the show unfortunately,
- 47:14Speaker 1: and I know some of that, you know, was absolutely
- 47:18Speaker 1: relevant to this episode. Some of it will be relevant
- 47:20Speaker 1: to maybe the next few episodes, and so just keep
- 47:24Speaker 1: an eye out for that stuff. And yeah, sorry, but
- 47:29Speaker 1: that's really all I have. So we'll just end this
- 47:32Speaker 1: on a super down note. And yeah, thanks for taking
- 47:37Speaker 1: the time to listen to this. I got to talk
- 47:40Speaker 1: to somebody about this, so I'm glad it was you,
- 47:45Speaker 1: even if you're not glad. So I am gonna go
- 47:49Speaker 1: finish planning out my stupid fucking ash links tattoo, and
- 47:54Speaker 1: I hope you have a really good whatever and you
- 47:57Speaker 1: don't think less of me from knowing that, and yeah,
- 48:03Speaker 1: flader webs
