- 0:59Time Arm Radio Superman Show, a Lacernsword dot com, as well as The
- 1:03War The War dot Great Detectives dot net. Well, it's been two weeks
- 1:10and we're going to go ahead and wrap up the Phantom Chase matter. So
- 1:14here is part eight in part nine from Hollywood, It's time now for Johnny
- 1:23Dollar Boy genius. Oh look, Johnny, don't blame yourself. We come
- 1:26here to Lagos Island to pick up Tom Chase. So what happens? He
- 1:30circles around behind us, grabs a boat and takes off. How could you
- 1:34help it? I should have figured what he was up to. He was
- 1:36all alone here on the island, no way to get off, so we
- 1:38obligingly show up in a boat. He pins us down on the end of
- 1:41brush with a few wild shots while he works his way around to the boat.
- 1:45Well, one thing I got to admit, Lola, your husband's no
- 1:47dummy. Please, Johnny, I just soon not be reminded of Tom's cleverness,
- 1:53bezzlement, murder, escape. If that's cleverness, I don't want any
- 1:56part of it. I hope you're going to turn himself in. That chance
- 2:00of that, maybe if he goes back to Barbados, we can find in
- 2:02there overlooking one small detail alone. You and I are now in the same
- 2:07spot, Tom Chase. Wise, we're alone on this island, and there's
- 2:09no way off. Tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey in the transcribed
- 2:21Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous freelance insurance
- 2:25Investigator Ours Truly Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location, Largos
- 2:45Island, three hours by boat from Barbados and the British West Indies to the
- 2:49Home Office Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut assignment the Phantom Chase matter expense
- 2:53account continued. I was getting nowhere. I've been on the trail of Tom
- 3:04Chase ever since he'dn' bazzle one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from his New York
- 3:07investment firm and jump Baale first to New Orleans. There, a man named
- 3:10Freddy Quintenna had offered to deliver Chase for a price, but Quintana had wound
- 3:15up dead in an alley. Obviously, Tom Chase didn't want to be delivered.
- 3:21I'd finally tracked him to Barbados and found a fisherman who told me he'd
- 3:23brought Chase here to Lagos Island. Chase's wife, Lola had flown to Barbados
- 3:28and insisted on coming with me to the island, hoping she could convince her
- 3:30husband to turn himself in. But instead, Chase had maneuvered us away from
- 3:35the boat I'd rented and had taken off in it. And now Lola and
- 3:38I were out in the middle of nowhere, but really nowhere. What are
- 3:43we going to do? Johnny, you know that's a good question. Moller,
- 3:46police inspector Whitsid back at Barbados told me that nobody comes near Lagos Island
- 3:51anymore, not even fishermen. We may be here quite a while. We
- 3:55don't even have any food. Well, let'd abandoned house across the island my
- 4:00husband was hiding. Could be this food in it that he brought? Would
- 4:03you do me a favor, Johnny? What is it? I just assume
- 4:08you didn't keep calling Tom my husband. Yes? Isn't he legally Yes?
- 4:13When I found out he wasn't traveling alone, that it was a woman who
- 4:16arranged his hiding place in New Orleans, I guess I just quit thinking of
- 4:20him as my husband. Oh, how do you think of him now?
- 4:24Is a confused animal on the run. He doesn't seem very confused to me.
- 4:29One thing I don't get, though, what's that? Well that night
- 4:31in Barbados before you arrived, when Chase slug me over the head in that
- 4:34waterfront warehouse, why didn't he finish me off? Then he had a chance
- 4:39to take me off his trail for keeps. And today here on the island,
- 4:42those shots of his were plenty. While Johnny, I keep telling you
- 4:45Tom is no killer. I know he's an embezzler running away from the law,
- 4:48But I can't believe he killed that man. Couldn't Tanna, New Orleans.
- 4:51I can't believe, or won't believe. I won't believe I guess,
- 4:57yeah, and I'm going to build a fire here on the beach. It's
- 5:01just possible about my pass near enough to the island to see it. It's
- 5:05funny the way things work out. Oh, timing is always so bad.
- 5:11What do you mean, Oh, you and me here under other circumstances.
- 5:16I don't really think i'd mind being here with you at all, Johnny.
- 5:21I uh, I think i'd better start building that fire. We collected a
- 5:30pile of driftwood and brush and touched a match to it. Then we went
- 5:34across the island to the house where Chase had been hiding out. It was
- 5:38a pretty wickedy affair, but he left some food after we didn't, and
- 5:42we went back and built the fire higher. Then we waited. I was
- 5:46dragged by and I was sure Chase was getting farther and farther from me all
- 5:49the time, but there was nothing I could do about it. Finally,
- 5:56I guess I dozed, doctor, Johnny, What what is what? Look
- 6:03coming around the point out there? A boat. Come on, let's get
- 6:09out where they can see. What's the matter. That could be the fisherman
- 6:12who brought Chase here. If he's working with Chase, maybe he's coming here
- 6:15to try and finish us off. Johnny, do you hey, wait,
- 6:17that's a police boat. Yeah, it's inspecta whitson, Thank heaven, Come
- 6:21on hi, Inspector, yes, Inspector yes, yeah. Aside from getting
- 6:34shot at a couple of times, A bit of a girl, eh,
- 6:38pretty one side ago, Oh, inspect you of the most beautiful sight we've
- 6:43seen all day? Oh well, thanks man. And I couldn't raise your
- 6:46bar radio and decided to come and have a look. See where's trace?
- 6:48Who knows? He pinned us down on the underbrush with a few shots while
- 6:51he circled around behind us and took off on the boat. I see,
- 6:56I wonder why? About halfway here, I saw a boat in the distance,
- 6:59was two away for me to see who was in it? Which way
- 7:00was it? Heading back towards Barbados? And let's get this boat cranked up,
- 7:03Inspector. Maybe we've got a chance after all. I imagine Barbados looks
- 7:15pretty good again, do you too, It certainly does, Inspector. Yeah.
- 7:18And you came along and looked like we were going to turn out to
- 7:21be Longos Islands alders citizens. Oh yeah. Incidentally, mister dollar, do
- 7:28you know a trap named George Jefferson. Yeah. Sure. He's the senior
- 7:30partner of the firm chasing bezel of money from in New York. He's an
- 7:33old friend. Inspector Why. Well, he dropped in on me just before
- 7:38I shoved off. Huh, said he'd wait for you at George Hotel,
- 7:41George here and Barbados. Well, I found him earlier and he said he
- 7:43was going to catch the first plane he caught and come down here. Why
- 7:46mainly to take you back to New York. Now, Johnny, we've been
- 7:49all over there, yes, and I still think you ought to. Hey,
- 7:53hold it, what's the matter That boat on the other side of the
- 7:56pier tied up there? It's the boat we went to the island in.
- 7:59Yeah. Sure, so Chase did come back to Barbados. Good. I'll
- 8:03have the airlines and steamships watched, and I'll get word to the fishing and
- 8:07charter. But Chase is there. I think we can keep him bottled up,
- 8:15Inspector Whitz. That took off to cover all the bases, and I
- 8:18took Lola back to her hotel. When I got to mind, George Everson
- 8:20was waiting for me. I took him to my room. Any luck on
- 8:26Lagos Island, mister Dollar, Oh yeah, Oliver Bead, you were sure
- 8:31it's really Chase. You've been trailing all the way. Freddy Quintana, New
- 8:35Orleans stole a letter from him, one that he'd started to Lola. It
- 8:37matched the sample of Chase's writing. You gave me New York. And when
- 8:41he grabbed our boat on Lagos Island, Lola got a look at him and
- 8:43recognized him. How's Lola holding up on her all this? Oh? I
- 8:48don't know. She says she's all over being hurt that once she found out
- 8:52there was another woman involved, that killed her feeling for Chase. I'm not
- 8:54so sure that, mister Dollar, neither mine. Lola was completely devoted to
- 8:58Tom. She was bad hurt by his embezzlement, and I think she's still
- 9:01being hurt. Well, in any case, i'd feel a lot better if
- 9:03she'd clear out. Well, as you know, I came down here to
- 9:07take her back, but on the way I started thinking about it. Oh,
- 9:11as long as she is here, perhaps she could be a big help
- 9:13to us. Well. I still think Tom Chase would listen to Lola,
- 9:16even if he wouldn't listen to anyone else. Nobody could change that much.
- 9:20I wouldn't count on that, mister Everson. Yeah, still is worth a
- 9:24try. If it could only work out so that Lola could talk to Tom,
- 9:28or better yet, if Lola and I both could talk to him,
- 9:30or what would you say to him? I don't know what Lola would say,
- 9:33but for me, I'd put it to him that his only hope of
- 9:35straightening himself out is to turn himself in and turn over whatever the embezzled money
- 9:39is left all. Look, I'd even go so far as to guarantee the
- 9:41eventual restitution to our investors of whatever amount he's already spent. I know,
- 9:46to take time. Well that's pretty generous of you, mister Everson, but
- 9:50I'm afraid you're a little too late. Why in the first place, Tom
- 9:54Chase obviously is not going to turn himself in. He's had plenty of chances
- 9:56to up to now, and he hasn't exactly jumped at them. But if
- 9:58I I think it's well, I think he's got a good reason for not
- 10:01turning himself in. It's better than an even chance. He's the one who
- 10:05knocked off Freddy Contana, New Orleans, the man who offered to turn Tom
- 10:07over to you for a price. That's the one. Oh no, mister
- 10:11Everson. At this point, it looks like there's only one way for me
- 10:13to get Tom Chase, and that's to track him down and drag him in
- 10:22expense account out of twenty seven a dollar twenty American cab fare from my hotel
- 10:26to Colonial Police headquarters. Check with Inspector Whitstt, who, fortunately for me,
- 10:30he was being most cooperative. Chase hasn't contacted any of the airlines or
- 10:33steamship lines. We're in touch with the charter and fishing boats. He hasn't
- 10:37approached any of them so far as we know. In other words, the
- 10:39chances are good that he's still here in Barbado. That's the right question,
- 10:43is where right? Again, take a look at this map and you will
- 10:48see our problem. One hundred and seven to square miles more or less.
- 10:52Yeah, he could be here in the city around the stick, somewhere over
- 10:56here in the mirsl beach out Yet I somehow dot that. Well, it's
- 11:01pretty fashionable spot, and I imagine Chase that try to be as inconspicuous as
- 11:05possible. Yeah, so he's probably hiding out in the city here, well,
- 11:09there are scores of hotels and rooming. Hid it, I don't have
- 11:11enough men to no, excuse me? What's that here? Yes? Oh,
- 11:18what's the address? Thanks her boy? Yeah, things are looking up,
- 11:24mister dolla, there's a man answering Chase's general description. Just checked in
- 11:28at a hotel out in the north part of the city. It's the room
- 11:39at the end of the hall, mister donna. Okay, let's not be
- 11:41polite inspecting. Let's use the pass key the clerk gave us and bargeering in
- 11:46right. Ah. Empty. How about that closet nothing, windows open,
- 11:58and there's a fire escape. Yeah, if you lived in the is he
- 12:01there? There's clothes on the chair. Yeah. That jacket it looks like
- 12:03the one he was wearing when he swiped my boat on Longest Island. Did
- 12:05he We just miss him, inspector. I've been just missing him for the
- 12:09last ten days, and believe me, I'm getting tired of it. Probably
- 12:11only by a few minutes too, Sure, just a few minutes, but
- 12:15it might as well be a year. I went back to my hotel,
- 12:22I was beat Being always one jump behind Tom Chase was getting on my nerves.
- 12:28Sure, he was still in Barbados, but where that the rate I
- 12:31was going catching him was turning into a full time career, A career was
- 12:35getting fed up with. Then as I ended my room, I had a
- 12:39slight movement behind him. I realized all of a sudden that I wasn't alone.
- 12:43Don't turn around on why hold it very still? Okay, Look,
- 12:48I can save you some time. It's my gun you're looking for. It's
- 12:52in the should to host a lot side. You know, I just had
- 12:58a real wild idea. I said to turn around, keep your hands in
- 13:00sight. Okay. My wild idea is that you're a Tom Chase. Yeah.
- 13:09If I ask you a couple of questions, why not? Why did
- 13:13you do it the embezzlement? Was it because of a woman? It was?
- 13:22It turned sour? It doesn't matter anymore. And where's the money?
- 13:26That doesn't matter either. You won't get it. I see next question?
- 13:33Why did you come here to my rum, Chase. I've tried every trick
- 13:37I know to shake you dollar. None of them's worked. You've kept on
- 13:41coming. I can't stand it anymore. I'm sick of running. Give yourself
- 13:46up, Chase. It's too late for that. No, there's another way.
- 13:52I've got to take you off my trail once and for all. I
- 13:54love, sorry, but that's the way it has to be. Dyla.
- 13:58This is the end of the line for you, Johnny Dollar. It's Lola
- 14:20Chase. Johnny, hang up Dollar, Johnny are you there? Yeah?
- 14:24Yeah, I'm here. But right now I can think of a lot of
- 14:26places i'd rather be, said, Johnny, there's someone there with you.
- 14:31Tom. It is Tom, isn't it. I'm coming over. No,
- 14:33don't do it. I'm coming out away, Lola. He has a gun
- 14:37and he means business. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Barbados, British
- 14:48West Indies to the Home Office Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut. Assignment
- 14:54the Phantom Chase matter expense account continued Item twenty eight. Well a long about
- 15:05then. I figured this item would be around two hundred bucks burial expenses for
- 15:09me. Tom Chase was desperate, tired of running, and ready to take
- 15:11me off his trail for keeps. But Lola Chase's phone called me seemed to
- 15:16have a strange effect on him. That was my wife was yeah, that
- 15:20was all. Why'd you drag her into this? Dollar? I didn't Chase.
- 15:22She insisted on coming here to Barbados herself. Why couldn't she stay out
- 15:26of it? I suppose because she's your wife. That's all over. Yeah,
- 15:31I figured that when I found out it was a woman who arranged your
- 15:35height out of New Orleans. That's all over too. Turn sour, real
- 15:41sour. There's nothing left for me, I love, Chase. There's only
- 15:46one thing for you to do. Turn yourself in, turn over what's left
- 15:48of the money, and you'll wait for that dollar. There's only one thing
- 15:52left. Wait a minute. Killing me is not going to do any good,
- 15:56Chase. Somebody else will take over and keep after you until they get
- 15:58you. And they will get you sooner or later. You can count on
- 16:02it. I know they'll keep coming after me. I can't run any more.
- 16:07Dollar. I won't take it any more from you or anybody. I
- 16:11just won't take it all. I never thought i'd be glad to get hit
- 16:18on the head, but just before I blacked out, I remember being very
- 16:22happy that it wasn't the bullet in the back I'd been expecting it. I
- 16:26don't know how long I was out, but when I came to Lola,
- 16:30Chase and George Everson, were bending over right? Are you all right?
- 16:33Johnny? Oh? Yeah, I guess so. Brother. In my head
- 16:40feels like I was on a pogo stick. What happened? Mister dollar?
- 16:44Chase was waiting for me here in my hotel room with a gun. Why
- 16:47did he come here for a very good reason to take me off his trail?
- 16:49For keeps? Oh? Yes, But when you phoned Lolla, it
- 16:53seemed a time of a notch to learn that you were here in Barbados.
- 16:57He started talking wildly, mister dollar. Lola and I'd still like to try
- 17:02the plan I mentioned to you, are not hear me out? We could
- 17:04just be wasting your breath, Everson, Tom Chase is not about to turn
- 17:08himself in now or ever. I still don't get it, though, Get
- 17:12what why he didn't kill me just now? And why he didn't kill me
- 17:18before in the waterfront warehouse or on Lagos Island. He had plenty of chances.
- 17:22It's almost as if, yes, I'll skip it, Everson. Suppose
- 17:27you take Lola back to her hotel. I'm going to check with police inspector.
- 17:30What's it? Well, what't you tell me, mister dollar? I'd
- 17:38say, Chase is just about the breaking point. Yeah, that's why we've
- 17:42got to track him down fast before he loses his head completely. Oh,
- 17:45they're continuing our check of hotels and rooming houses. I don't think there's anything
- 17:49else he can do for the moment. Excuse me, what's it here?
- 17:56Yes, in just a moment for you and mister Donner. Oh. Thanks,
- 18:00Hello, it's Lola, Johnny. He was just here, Chase,
- 18:03swear here at my hotel cottage. Please come quickly, Johnny, I'll be
- 18:07there in ten minutes. I made it an eight. Lola was still trumpling.
- 18:12It was horrible. He was talking wild crazy. You see which way
- 18:15he went? Yes, I got to the window in time to see him
- 18:18drive off to the mountain. Johnny, we've got to find him. He's
- 18:22out of his mind. We piled into the car and took off after Chase
- 18:26up a twisting, steep mountain road. Tell me what happened? What'd he
- 18:33say? I've never seen like that before, Johnny. He's sick the things
- 18:37he said, like what? Then it was all over. There was nothing
- 18:41left for him that he just wanted to see me once more before before what
- 18:45he didn't see? But oh, Johnny, we can't take these turns any
- 18:49faster. I begged him to turn himself in. He said he wished he
- 18:53could for my sake, but then he couldn't. Look, Lola, maybe
- 18:57he just took this route across the island the way he was talking, Johnny,
- 19:02I don't think he was trying to get across the island. Look up
- 19:06ahead, that's the car he was driving. Park beside the road, next
- 19:10to a cliff. All right, Lola, you'd better stay right here in
- 19:15the car. Yes, I guess i'd rather. I walked to the edge
- 19:22of the cliff and looked down. His body was crumbled up on the rocks
- 19:26below. I climbed down. He was dead, all smashed up. It
- 19:32wasn't pretty. I climbed back to my car. Lola just looked at me
- 19:37with the big question in her eyes. All I did was not. All
- 19:42she did was slump over on the seat. I drove her back to her
- 19:47hotel and phoned inspector whits it. Then I went back to my hotel.
- 19:52Expense account had him twenty nine three dollars drinks for me. I thought about
- 19:56a lot of things. Tom Chase, who'd had everything in his favor back
- 20:02in New York, but who'd embezzled one hundred and twenty thousand, had killed
- 20:06a man in New Orleans for trying to turn him in, but who hadn't
- 20:08killed me for trying the same thing, and who ended up at the bottom
- 20:12of a cliff in Barbados. I thought about Lola would come a long way
- 20:17for nothing except the final heartache, And I thought about me, who would
- 20:21also come a long way for nothing period. The next day I dropped in
- 20:29on Inspector Wester at police head quarters. Well, Dollar, i've missed you.
- 20:33Uh, I sort of took time out for a while, Inspector,
- 20:37I don't wonder. Yeah, this is Chase, of course, identified the
- 20:41buddy. The inquest was this morning, let it suicide buryls this afternoon here
- 20:48in Barbados. At first, missus Chase wanted to take the body back to
- 20:51New York, but mister Everson felt that that would just be adding another painful
- 20:55experience to those she'd already been through. Ah yeah, well I still don't
- 21:00have the money chasing Bezel. Inspector him, no, and offend. I'd
- 21:04say, the chances are finding it, We're not too good. Did you
- 21:07find anything at all in Chase's pockets that might give me a lead. Ooh,
- 21:10just the usual loose change his wallet, cigarettes, some matches and co
- 21:15book matches. Yeah, when the water burnt bar, we'll let me see
- 21:18him, inspector. It's not much, but it's the only thing I've got
- 21:22to go on. I went down to the waterfront bar named on the match
- 21:27folder and started calling the neighborhood. I checked every hotel in roaming house.
- 21:32Three hours later, I was about ready to give up, and then I
- 21:34found it. Yep, Chase's last hide on. I searched his room,
- 21:40but the money wasn't there. I went back to the desk and checked the
- 21:44register again, trying to find out if a woman had checked in about the
- 21:45same time Chase had no soap. But then I'd pulled out the sample of
- 21:51Chase's writing that ever since had given me a New York and I compared it
- 21:53to chase the signature on the register. A few wild ideas started chasing themselves
- 21:57around in my brain. Idea as I began to fall into a crazy pattern,
- 22:02Adam thirty twelve to sixty long distance phone called at the home office of
- 22:04Universal Adjustment in Haydford. I asked Pat McCrackan to run an air informing.
- 22:10Three hours later, we call back from New York City with the answer,
- 22:12yep, I'd come all the way to Barbados, but the case got solved
- 22:17in New York. I phoned Lola and Everson and asked them to come to
- 22:21the cemetery. Fifteen minutes later we met at the freshly turned grave. Mister
- 22:25Dollar, I must say you're not being considered the flower. I'm sure you
- 22:27realize it. Coming back to Tom's grave here is the most painful experience for
- 22:32I'm sure you had a good reason. Johnny, Yeah, yeah, I
- 22:36did. I wanted both of you to know what a jerk I've been in
- 22:41this investigation. Don't say that you've done everything that could be done, and
- 22:45I appreciate it. Well, thanks, Lola, But you see, for
- 22:49almost two weeks now, from New York to New Orleans to Barbados here,
- 22:55I've been chasing a dead man. Hi, I don't understand. I think
- 22:59you understand real Well, look here, if this is some kind of a
- 23:02joke, it's some very poor takee It's no joke. I've got a hand
- 23:04it to you both. Though you engineered the whole deal with just two people.
- 23:08What are you talking about dropped the act. Lola, the faithful grieving
- 23:12wife. You had me fool but good look, Dollar, You told me
- 23:15you took a trip alone about the time Tom was arrested. Lola, Oh
- 23:18that was true, but it wasn't to Martha's vineyard. You went down to
- 23:22New Orleans and rented a rum under the name of Tom James. You were
- 23:26the other woman I was looking for. That's a lie. You don't know
- 23:29what you're saying, Dollard. I Freddy Quintana in New Orleans showed me a
- 23:33letter Chase was supposed to have written. It matched the sample of Chase's writing
- 23:37you'd given me a New York Everson. Well, of course it did.
- 23:41That proves it proves that the sample you gave me in New York wasn't Chase's
- 23:44writing. I just checked by long distance phone. What Oh, yes,
- 23:48Freddy Quintanna played his quite real well. But what he didn't know was he
- 23:52was going to get paid off of a bullet. That was the day you
- 23:56turned up in New Orleans, Lola, to kill him. Shut his mouth,
- 24:00Dollar, let him finish. Oh, there's not much more. You
- 24:03hired the second guy to pose as your husband and lead me a merry Chase.
- 24:07That explains why he didn't kill me and why I was always able to
- 24:11pick up his trail. Again, I was supposed to. That's the way
- 24:12you were playing it. And all the time the real Tom Chase was dead.
- 24:18You probably killed him back in New York when he was supposed to have
- 24:21jumped bail and disappeared. Are you through dollar almost? Except for the money?
- 24:26You are the embezzler, Everson. It was you who juggled the accounts,
- 24:32and after I ran into a dead end down here with a fake Chase's
- 24:34death, you and Mulla could live happily ever afterward with the dog go on.
- 24:37Of course, the fellow you hired to pose his chase didn't realize he
- 24:41was going to get paid off the same way Contana was What are you talking
- 24:44about? The way you helped him over that cliff, Everson, to make
- 24:45it look like suicide. How did you know I probably wouldn't have tumbled to
- 24:48it if I hadn't checked his hand writing. Of course, you can't prove
- 24:51any of this, like to exhume the body, ship it back to New
- 24:53York and prove that it isn't the real Tom Chase. The bunny states where
- 24:56it is dollar Oh, put that gun down, and they already know most
- 25:00of the story. In New York, you're bluff And why didn't you call
- 25:03the bluff and find out. I think he's telling the truth, George.
- 25:07In that case, yes, you'd better take care of him, not we,
- 25:12Lola, not anymore. What do you mean. I think we'd better
- 25:17just dissolve the partnership. Don't try anything like that, George. This was
- 25:21our idea together, and you're in it as deep as I am. And
- 25:22that's why I'm leaving, Lola. I wish it had worked out, but
- 25:26as long as I do, can't do that. You've got the money.
- 25:30They both went for Everson at the same moment. The shot spun her around
- 25:34and crumpled her. I grabbed a gun from Everson. I'm afraid it's not
- 25:41serious. If his aim had been better, he'd have done you a favor.
- 25:45One thing I still don't get. Your husband wouldn't make any statement after
- 25:48his arrest. That means to me he knew what you were up to,
- 25:52and he loved you so much he was willing to take the rap. Tell
- 25:56me this, Lola, why did you marry the poor guy first place?
- 26:06Expenser count total seventeen and twenty three dollars. Lola and Everson were turned over
- 26:11to the authorities, and Everson gave up the key to a safe deposit box
- 26:15in New York where the embezzle money had been all the time. It also
- 26:19showed us the deserted spot on Long Island where he and Lola had hidden the
- 26:23body of the real Tom Chase remarks, Dear pat, next time you call
- 26:30me for an assignment like this one, I hope you get a busy signal.
- 26:34Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Now here's our star to tell you about
- 26:51next week's story. Next week, a body suddenly rises from the grave to
- 26:55take the spotlight from a Hollywood star. Join us, won't you? You're
- 27:00truly Johnny Dollar. Yours truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed
- 27:11in Hollywood. Written by Robert Wright, it is produced and directed by Jack
- 27:15Johnstone. Heard in our cast were Michael Ann, Barrett, Jack Edwards,
- 27:18Ben Wright, Virginia, greg Don Diamond, Boris Lewis, and Richard Crenna.
- 27:23Musical supervision by A. Marigo Marino. Be sure to join us on
- 27:27Monday night, same time and station for another exciting story of yours truly,
- 27:33Johnny Dollar, Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well, that was definitely a
- 28:25twist, almost worthy of let George do it, which kind of we were
- 28:30kind of set up with it looking like it be almost mediocre ending, but
- 28:36then we found out the truth and it's much more. I think of a
- 28:40classic hard boiled story the way that it ended as our whole understanding of the
- 28:45story and who the characters were literally changed in a moment. Though, as
- 28:49Johnny said, it was a crazy idea, but it does explain everything that
- 28:55happened in the story. Lola was the one, I think who really kept
- 29:00subtly giving it away in ways that we wouldn't understand and could perhaps only be
- 29:06picked up later. All right, Well, now on to some listener comments
- 29:10and feedback, and we start over on Facebook with this comment for Brook I
- 29:17love Johnny Dollar and I'm so sad the last of the episodes is coming up,
- 29:22And similarly a tweet from aug King of Bashian says, Adam loving the
- 29:29program, I'm not looking forward to the end of Johnny Dollar. We'll check
- 29:33out your books. Well, thanks so much, definitely appreciate you checking out
- 29:38the books. Regarding Johnny Dollar, this is not the end of Johnny Dollar.
- 29:48We have coming up, just the end of the serial era. After
- 29:52next week, we will have Johnny Dollars on Fridays for about another of four
- 30:03four and a half years, and most of that with Bob Bailey, but
- 30:10then Bob Readick and Manuel Kramer taking over. We have three and a half
- 30:14years with all Bailey to listen through, and then about a year and a
- 30:18half with others. So four and a half to five years left of yours
- 30:22truly Johnny Dollar, just adding some other shows on Mondays and Wednesdays. Ouga
- 30:29also rights Adam. Is Rocky Jordan a program you have shown or one that
- 30:33might be coming up. I really enjoyed it. Thanks, I've addressed this
- 30:38before. Rocky Jordan is one we did during our preview series as a program
- 30:45we weren't going to be doing in the next year or so. But when
- 30:48we intend to do eventually, how soon eventually it comes, I don't quite
- 30:53know yet. I have very solid with my plans for most of the schedule
- 31:03outside of Tuesdays for the next couple years and on Wednesday for about the next
- 31:12four years. I'm pretty firmly set but we will. It's sometime in the
- 31:21future going to be a ways, but I hope you enjoy the shows we
- 31:23play in the meanwhile, and then Twitter user talking Donkey tweets enjoy the show.
- 31:32Thanks for all your hard work blessings well, thank you so much.
- 31:36I do appreciate that. Finally, we have an email from Michelle who says,
- 31:41Hey, Adam, my dad and I really enjoy listening to your podcast.
- 31:45We are We started listening recently in March with the Old Time Radio Superman
- 31:51show and the disappearance of Clark can't follow by the secret letter. We also
- 31:55enjoy yours truly, Johnny Dollar. We have serious XM Radio a classics Wich
- 32:00Pace Johnny Dollar, but we usually aren't in the car long enough to finish
- 32:04all five parts of the episode, or the episode has already started to Your
- 32:07podcast have been a great help. I was looking in the history of the
- 32:12show and found that Bob Bailey did an unsuccessful TV pilot of Johnny Dollar in
- 32:15nineteen fifty eight. I tried looking for it but couldn't find it. Do
- 32:21you know anything about this? Also, with the serial era of Johnny Dollar
- 32:24coming in to an end in a couple of weeks. Are you going to
- 32:27go back to the rest of the Bob Daily episodes if you already talked about
- 32:31it in a podcast we haven't gotten to yet. My apologies. Any information
- 32:35you could supply would be greatly appreciated, and we'll be definitely sending in a
- 32:38donation. Thank you so much for the show. Well, Michelle, thanks
- 32:43so much. No need to apologize because we've done twelve hundred and some episodes
- 32:50and you can't expect listeners to go back through all the shows and hear all
- 32:54the comments, So some way issues come up several times, and that's okay.
- 33:01As I mentioned before, we definitely are going to go through the Bob
- 33:05Bailey half hour episodes, and those, particularly the early ones, tend to
- 33:09be entertaining. The thing with the Johnny Dollar TV pilots, I've heard different
- 33:16things about Johnny Dollar, Bob Bailey and TV pilots. Information I've been able
- 33:22to find was that there were two Johnny Dollar TV pilots made, none of
- 33:28which featured Bob Bailey. There also is a widely circulated radio interview that was
- 33:34done with Bob Bailey's daughter in which she stated that her father has given an
- 33:39opportunity to film a TV pilot, but was turned down because he didn't look
- 33:45telligenic enough. Whether that was a TV pilot for Johnny Dollar or a TV
- 33:52pilot for Let George do It, I don't know. I did check the
- 33:57Encyclopedia of Television Pilots and it lists two separate pilots. One was made in
- 34:02nineteen sixty two and it was called Johnny Dollar and it starred Gil Gerard.
- 34:09The other was made in nineteen forty nine and it starred Charles Russell. Was
- 34:16produced for CBS back in nineteen forty nine as a very early pilot, which
- 34:22was which if they're if they're accurate in the Encyclopedia of Television Pilots is kind
- 34:30of an odd thing to do, since Johnny Dollar had barely been on the
- 34:35air in nineteen forty nine. But thanks so much for the question. And
- 34:39if I ever track down a TV pilot anywhere, I will be sure and
- 34:45let listeners know well that will do it for today. Join us back here
- 34:52tomorrow for police headquarters, and on Monday we begin the very last of the
- 34:58Johnny Dollar serials, and next Friday, Manhunt returns, before moving to Monday
- 35:04for the rest of the run of that series in the meantime. If you
