- 0:00Speaker 1: Sermon thirty two, upon Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount
- 0:05Speaker 1: Discourse twelve. The text is Matthew seven, verses fifteen to twenty.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing,
- 0:19Speaker 1: but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Ye shall know them by
- 0:23Speaker 1: their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns or figs
- 0:29Speaker 1: of thistles? Even so, every good tree bringeth forth good fruit,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good
- 0:40Speaker 1: tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt
- 0:44Speaker 1: tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not
- 0:49Speaker 1: forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. It is
- 1:02Speaker 1: scarce possible to express or conceive what multitudes of souls
- 1:07Speaker 1: run on to destruction, because they would not be persuaded
- 1:11Speaker 1: to walk in a narrow way, even though it were
- 1:15Speaker 1: the way to everlasting salvation, And the same thing we
- 1:20Speaker 1: may still observe daily. Such is the folly and madness
- 1:25Speaker 1: of mankind, that thousands of men still rush on in
- 1:29Speaker 1: the way.
- 1:30Speaker 2: To hell only because it is a broad way.
- 1:35Speaker 1: They walk in it themselves because others do, because so
- 1:40Speaker 1: many perish, they will add to the number. Such is
- 1:44Speaker 1: the amazing influence of example over the weak, miserable children
- 1:49Speaker 1: of men. It continually peoples the regions of death and
- 1:55Speaker 1: drowns numberless souls in everlasting perdition. To warn mankind of this,
- 2:04Speaker 1: to guard as many as possible against this spreading contagion,
- 2:09Speaker 1: God has commanded his watchmen to cry aloud and to
- 2:13Speaker 1: show the people the danger they are in. For this end,
- 2:17Speaker 1: he has sent his servants, the prophets in their succeeding generations,
- 2:23Speaker 1: to point out the narrow path and exhort all men
- 2:27Speaker 1: not to be conformed to this world.
- 2:30Speaker 2: But what if the.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Watchmens themselves fall into the snare against which they should
- 2:36Speaker 1: warn others?
- 2:38Speaker 2: What if the.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Prophets prophesied deceits, if they cause the people to err
- 2:45Speaker 1: from the way. What shall be done if they point
- 2:48Speaker 1: out as the way to eternal life, what is in
- 2:52Speaker 1: truth the way to eternal death? And exhort others to
- 2:55Speaker 1: walk as they do themselves in the broad Not the
- 2:59Speaker 1: narrow way? Is this and unheard of? Is it an
- 3:04Speaker 1: uncommon thing? Nay, God knoweth it is not. The instances
- 3:10Speaker 1: of it are almost innumerable.
- 3:13Speaker 2: We may find them in every age and nation.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But how terrible is this when the ambassadors of God
- 3:20Speaker 1: turn agents for the devil, When they who are commissioned
- 3:24Speaker 1: to teach men the way to Heaven do in fact
- 3:27Speaker 1: teach them the way to hell. These are like the
- 3:31Speaker 1: locusts of Egypt, which eat up the residue that had escaped,
- 3:37Speaker 1: that had remained after the hail. They devour even the
- 3:41Speaker 1: residue of men that had escaped that were not destroyed
- 3:44Speaker 1: by ill example. It is not therefore without cause that
- 3:49Speaker 1: are wise and gracious Master so solemnly cautions us against them.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Beware, saith, he of false prophets.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they
- 4:03Speaker 1: are ravening wolves. A caution this of the utmost importance,
- 4:10Speaker 1: that it may be the more effectually sink into our hearts.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Let us inquire first who these false prophets are, secondly
- 4:21Speaker 1: what appearance they put on, and thirdly how we may
- 4:25Speaker 1: know what they really are.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Notwithstanding their fair appearance.
- 4:33Speaker 1: We are first to inquire who these false prophets are.
- 4:38Speaker 1: And this it is needful to do the more diligently,
- 4:42Speaker 1: because these very men have so labored to rest this
- 4:45Speaker 1: scripture to their.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Own, though not only their own destruction.
- 4:51Speaker 1: In order therefore to cut off all dispute, I shall
- 4:55Speaker 1: raise no dust, as the manner of some is. Neither
- 4:59Speaker 1: you use any loose rhetorical exclamations to deceive the hearts
- 5:04Speaker 1: of the simple, but speak rough plain truths such as
- 5:09Speaker 1: none can deny who has either understanding or modesty left,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and such truths as have the closest connection with the
- 5:18Speaker 1: whole tenor of the preceding discourse. Whereas too many have
- 5:23Speaker 1: interpreted these words without any regard to all that went before,
- 5:28Speaker 1: as if they bore no manner of relation to the
- 5:31Speaker 1: sermon in the close of which they stand. By Prophets
- 5:36Speaker 1: here as in many other passages of Scripture, particularly in
- 5:41Speaker 1: the New Testament, are meant not those who foretell things
- 5:45Speaker 1: to come, but those who speak in the name of God,
- 5:49Speaker 1: those men who profess to be sent of God to
- 5:52Speaker 1: teach others the way to heaven. Those are false prophets
- 5:58Speaker 1: who teach a false way to have a way which
- 6:01Speaker 1: does not lead thither, or which comes in the end
- 6:05Speaker 1: to the same point, who do not teach the true.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Every broad way is infallibly a false one. Therefore this
- 6:15Speaker 1: is one plain sure rule. They who teach men to
- 6:19Speaker 1: walk in a broad way, a way that many walk in,
- 6:24Speaker 1: are false prophets. Again, the true way to heaven is
- 6:30Speaker 1: a narrow way. Therefore this is another plain sure rule.
- 6:34Speaker 1: They who do not teach men to walk in a
- 6:37Speaker 1: narrow way, to be singular, are false prophets. To be
- 6:43Speaker 1: more particular, the only true way to heaven is that
- 6:47Speaker 1: pointed out in the preceding sermon. Therefore, they are false
- 6:52Speaker 1: prophets who do not teach men to walk in this way. Now,
- 6:58Speaker 1: the way to heaven pointed out in the preceding sermon
- 7:01Speaker 1: is the way of lowliness, mourning, meekness, and.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Holy desire, love of God and of our.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Neighbor, doing good and suffering evil for Christ's sake. They
- 7:17Speaker 1: are therefore false prophets who teach as the way to
- 7:21Speaker 1: heaven any other way than this. It matters not what
- 7:26Speaker 1: they call that other way. They may call it faith
- 7:30Speaker 1: or good works, or faith and works, or repentance or repentance,
- 7:35Speaker 1: faith and new obedience.
- 7:36Speaker 2: All these are good words.
- 7:39Speaker 1: But if under these or any other terms, whatever they
- 7:43Speaker 1: teach men any way distinct from this, they are properly
- 7:47Speaker 1: false prophets. How much more do they fall under that
- 7:52Speaker 1: condemnation who speak evil of this good way. But above
- 7:57Speaker 1: all they who teach the directly opposite way, the way
- 8:00Speaker 1: of pride, of levity, of passion, of worldly desires, of
- 8:05Speaker 1: loving pleasure more than God, of unkindness to our neighbor,
- 8:10Speaker 1: of unconcern for good works, and suffering no evil, no
- 8:15Speaker 1: persecution for righteousness sake.
- 8:19Speaker 2: If it be asked, why.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Whoever did teach this, or who does teach it as
- 8:25Speaker 1: the way to heaven? I answer ten thousand, wise and
- 8:29Speaker 1: honorable men, even all those of whatever denomination, who encourage
- 8:34Speaker 1: the proud, the trifler, the passionate, the lover of the world,
- 8:39Speaker 1: the man of pleasure, the unjust or unkind, the easy, careless, harmless,
- 8:45Speaker 1: useless creature, the man who suffers no reproach for righteousness sake,
- 8:49Speaker 1: to imagine he is in the way to heaven. These
- 8:54Speaker 1: are false prophets in the highest sense of the word.
- 8:58Speaker 2: These are traitors both to God and man.
- 9:02Speaker 1: These are no other than the first born of Satan,
- 9:06Speaker 1: the eldest sons of Apollyon, the destroyer.
- 9:10Speaker 2: These are far.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Above the rank of ordinary cutthroats, for they murder the
- 9:14Speaker 1: souls of men, they are continually peopling the realms of Knight,
- 9:20Speaker 1: And whenever they follow the poor souls whom they have destroyed,
- 9:24Speaker 1: Hell shall be moved from beneath to meet them at
- 9:27Speaker 1: their coming. But do they come now in their own
- 9:33Speaker 1: shape by no means. If it were so, they could
- 9:38Speaker 1: not destroy. You would take the alarm and flee for
- 9:41Speaker 1: your life. Therefore they put on a quite contrary appearance,
- 9:47Speaker 1: which was the second thing to be considered. They come
- 9:50Speaker 1: to you in sheep's clothing. Although inwardly they are ravening wolves.
- 9:58Speaker 1: They come to you in sheep's clothing, that is, with
- 10:01Speaker 1: an appearance of harmlessness. They come in the most mild,
- 10:07Speaker 1: inoffensive manner, without any mark or token of enmity. Who
- 10:13Speaker 1: can imagine that these quiet creatures would do any hurt
- 10:16Speaker 1: to anyone. Perhaps they may not be so zealous and
- 10:20Speaker 1: active in doing good as one would wish they were. However,
- 10:24Speaker 1: you see no reason to suspect that they have even
- 10:28Speaker 1: the desire.
- 10:29Speaker 2: To do any harm. But this is not all.
- 10:34Speaker 1: They come secondly with an appearance of usefulness. Indeed, to this,
- 10:40Speaker 1: to do good they are particularly called. They are set
- 10:44Speaker 1: apart for this very thing. They are particularly commissioned to
- 10:48Speaker 1: watch over your soul and to train you up to
- 10:51Speaker 1: eternal life. It is their whole business to go about
- 10:55Speaker 1: doing good and healing those that are oppressed of the devil.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You have been always accustomed to look upon them in
- 11:03Speaker 1: this light, as messengers of God sent to bring you
- 11:07Speaker 1: a blessing. They come Thirdly, with an appearance of religion.
- 11:14Speaker 2: All they do is for conscience sake, they assure you.
- 11:18Speaker 1: It is out of mere zeal for God that they
- 11:21Speaker 1: are making God a liar. It is out of pure
- 11:24Speaker 1: concern for religion that they would destroy it root and branch.
- 11:29Speaker 1: All they speak is only from a love of truth
- 11:33Speaker 1: and a fear lest it should suffer. And it may
- 11:36Speaker 1: be from a regard for the Church and a desire
- 11:39Speaker 1: to defend her from all her enemies. Above all, they
- 11:45Speaker 1: come with an appearance of love. They take all these
- 11:49Speaker 1: pains only for your good. They should not trouble themselves
- 11:54Speaker 1: about you, but that they have a kindness for you.
- 11:57Speaker 2: They will make large professions.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Of their good will, of their concern for the danger
- 12:02Speaker 1: you are in, and of their earnest desire to preserve
- 12:05Speaker 1: you from error, from being entangled in new and mischievous doctrines.
- 12:10Speaker 1: They should be very sorry to see one who means
- 12:13Speaker 1: so well hurried into any extreme, perplexed with strange and
- 12:19Speaker 1: unintelligible notions, were deluded into enthusiasm. Therefore, it is that
- 12:25Speaker 1: they advise you to keep still in the plain middleway,
- 12:29Speaker 1: and to beware of being righteous over much, lest you
- 12:33Speaker 1: should destroy yourself. But how may we know what they
- 12:40Speaker 1: really are? Notwithstanding their fair appearance? This was the third
- 12:46Speaker 1: thing into which it was proposed to inquire. Our blessed
- 12:51Speaker 1: lords saw how needful it was for all men to
- 12:54Speaker 1: know false prophets, however disguised. He saw likewise how unable
- 13:00Speaker 1: most men word to deduce a truth through a long
- 13:04Speaker 1: train of consequences. He therefore gives us a short and
- 13:08Speaker 1: plain rule, easy to be understood by men of the
- 13:11Speaker 1: meanest capacities, and easy to be applied upon all occasions.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Ye shall know them by their fruits. Upon all occasions
- 13:22Speaker 1: you may easily apply this rule in order to know
- 13:26Speaker 1: whether any who speak in the name of.
- 13:28Speaker 2: God are false or true prophets.
- 13:30Speaker 1: It is easy to observe first what are the fruits
- 13:35Speaker 1: of their doctrine as to themselves? What effect has it
- 13:40Speaker 1: had upon their lives. Are they holy and unblameable in
- 13:44Speaker 1: all things? What effect has it had upon their hearts?
- 13:49Speaker 1: Does it appear by the general tenor of their conversation
- 13:53Speaker 1: that their tempers are holy, heavenly divine, that the mind
- 13:59Speaker 1: is in them and which was in Christ Jesus, that
- 14:02Speaker 1: they are meek, lowly, patient, lovers of God, and man
- 14:07Speaker 1: zealous of good works, you may easily observe. Secondly, what
- 14:13Speaker 1: are the fruits of their doctrine? As to those that
- 14:16Speaker 1: hear them? In many at least, though not in all,
- 14:21Speaker 1: For the apostles themselves did not convert all they heard them?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Have these the mind that was in Christ? And do
- 14:30Speaker 1: they walk as He also walked? And was it by
- 14:33Speaker 1: hearing these men that they began to do?
- 14:36Speaker 2: So?
- 14:37Speaker 1: Were they inwardly and outwardly wicked till they heard them?
- 14:41Speaker 1: If so, it is a manifest proof that those are
- 14:45Speaker 1: true prophets teachers sent of God. But if it is
- 14:50Speaker 1: not so, if they do not effectually teach either themselves
- 14:54Speaker 1: or others to love and serve God, it is a
- 14:57Speaker 1: manifest proof that they are false prophets, that God hath
- 15:02Speaker 1: not sent them. A hard saying this, how few can
- 15:08Speaker 1: bear it this our Lord was sensible of, and therefore
- 15:12Speaker 1: condescends to prove it at large by several clear and
- 15:16Speaker 1: convincing arguments. Do men says he gather grapes of thorns
- 15:22Speaker 1: or figs of thistles Matthew seven sixteen. Do you expect
- 15:27Speaker 1: that these evil men should bring forth good fruit?
- 15:31Speaker 2: As well?
- 15:31Speaker 1: Might you expect that thorns should bring forth grapes, or
- 15:35Speaker 1: that figs should.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Grow upon thistles.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Every good tree bringeth forth good fruit, but a corrupt
- 15:42Speaker 1: tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Matthew five seventeen.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Every true prophet, every teacher whom I have sent, bringeth
- 15:51Speaker 1: forth a good fruit of holiness. But a false prophet
- 15:55Speaker 1: a teacher whom I have not sent, brings forth only
- 15:59Speaker 1: sin and wickedness. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. A
- 16:08Speaker 1: true prophet, a teacher sent from God, does not bring
- 16:11Speaker 1: forth good fruit, sometimes only, but always not accidentally, but
- 16:17Speaker 1: by a kind of necessity in like manner. A false prophet,
- 16:22Speaker 1: one whom God hath not sent, does not bring forth
- 16:26Speaker 1: evil fruit accidentally or sometimes only, but always and of necessity.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn
- 16:38Speaker 1: down and cast into the fire Verse nineteen. Such infallibly
- 16:44Speaker 1: will be the lot of those prophets who bring not
- 16:48Speaker 1: forth good fruit, who do not save souls from sin,
- 16:52Speaker 1: who do not bring.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Sinners to repentance.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Wherefore, let this stand as an eternal rule. By their fruits,
- 17:01Speaker 1: ye shall know them Matthew seven twenty. They who in
- 17:06Speaker 1: fact bring the proud, passionate, unmerciful lovers of the world
- 17:10Speaker 1: to be lowly, gentle lovers of God and man.
- 17:14Speaker 2: They are true prophets.
- 17:16Speaker 1: They are sent from God, who therefore confirms their word.
- 17:20Speaker 1: On the other hand, they whose hearers, if unrighteous before,
- 17:25Speaker 1: remain unrighteous still, or at least void of any righteousness
- 17:30Speaker 1: which exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees.
- 17:34Speaker 2: They are false prophets. They are not sent of God.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Therefore their word falls to the ground, and without a
- 17:42Speaker 1: miracle of grace, they and their hearers together will fall
- 17:47Speaker 1: into the bottomless pit. Oh, beware of these false prophets,
- 17:53Speaker 1: for though they come in sheep's clothing, yet inwardly they
- 17:56Speaker 1: are ravening wolves. They only destroy devour the flock. They
- 18:02Speaker 1: tear them in pieces. If there is none to help them.
- 18:05Speaker 1: They will not cannot lead you in the way to heaven.
- 18:10Speaker 1: How should they when they know it not themselves. Oh beware,
- 18:14Speaker 1: they do not turn you out of the way and
- 18:16Speaker 1: cause you to lose what you have wrought. But perhaps
- 18:22Speaker 1: you will ask if there is such danger in hearing them?
- 18:26Speaker 2: Ought I to hear them at all?
- 18:28Speaker 1: It is a weighty question such as deserves the deepest consideration,
- 18:33Speaker 1: and ought not to be answered, but upon the calmest thought,
- 18:38Speaker 1: the most deliberate reflection. For many years I have been
- 18:43Speaker 1: almost afraid to speak at all concerning it, being unable
- 18:47Speaker 1: to determine one way or the other, or to give
- 18:51Speaker 1: any judgment upon it. Many reasons there are which readily
- 18:55Speaker 1: occur and incline me to say, hear them not.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And yet what our Lord.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Speaks concerning the false prophets of his own times seems
- 19:06Speaker 1: to imply the contrary. Then spake Jesus unto the multitude
- 19:12Speaker 1: and to his disciples, saying, the scribes and the Pharisees
- 19:16Speaker 1: sit in Moses seat, are the ordinary stated teachers in
- 19:21Speaker 1: your church. All Therefore, whatsoever they bid you observe, that
- 19:26Speaker 1: observe and do, but do not y after their works.
- 19:31Speaker 2: For they say and do not.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Now that these were false prophets in the highest sense,
- 19:38Speaker 1: our Lord has shown during the whole course of his ministry,
- 19:42Speaker 1: as indeed he does in those very.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Words they say and do not.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Therefore, by their fruits, his disciples could not but know them,
- 19:52Speaker 1: seeing they were open to the view of all men.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Accordingly he warns them again and again to be of
- 20:00Speaker 1: these false prophets.
- 20:03Speaker 2: And yet he does not forbid them to hear even these.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Nay, he in effect commands them so to do in
- 20:11Speaker 1: those words all Therefore, whatsoever they bid you observe, that
- 20:16Speaker 1: observe and do, for unless they heard them, they could
- 20:20Speaker 1: not know, much less observed whatsoever they bade them do. Here, then,
- 20:26Speaker 1: our Lord himself gives a plain direction both to his
- 20:30Speaker 1: apostles and the whole multitude, in some circumstances to hear
- 20:35Speaker 1: even false prophets known and acknowledged so to be. But
- 20:42Speaker 1: perhaps it will be said he only directed to hear
- 20:46Speaker 1: them when they read the scriptures to the congregation. I
- 20:51Speaker 1: answer at the same time that they thus read the scripture.
- 20:55Speaker 2: They generally expounded it too.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And here is no kind of intimation that they were
- 21:02Speaker 1: to hear the one and not the other. Also, nay,
- 21:05Speaker 1: the very terms all things, whatsoever they bid you observe,
- 21:10Speaker 1: exclude any such limitation. Again unto them, unto false prophets.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Undeniably such is frequently committed, oh grief to speak. For
- 21:24Speaker 1: surely these things ought not so to be the administration
- 21:28Speaker 1: of the sacrament. Also to direct men. Therefore, not to
- 21:32Speaker 1: hear them would be in effect to cut them off
- 21:36Speaker 1: from the ordinances of God. But this we dare not do,
- 21:41Speaker 1: considering the validity of the ordinance doth not depend upon
- 21:45Speaker 1: the goodness of Him that administers, but on the faithfulness
- 21:49Speaker 1: of Him that ordained it, who will and duth meet
- 21:52Speaker 1: us in his appointed ways. Therefore, on this account, likewise
- 21:58Speaker 1: I scruple to say here not even the false prophets,
- 22:03Speaker 1: even by these who are under a curse themselves, God
- 22:08Speaker 1: can and douff give His blessing.
- 22:11Speaker 2: For the bread which they break.
- 22:13Speaker 1: We have experimentally known to be the communion of the.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Body of Christ.
- 22:19Speaker 1: And the cup which God blessed even by their unhallowed lips,
- 22:24Speaker 1: was to us the communion of the blood of Christ.
- 22:29Speaker 1: All therefore which I can say, is this in any
- 22:33Speaker 1: particular case. Wait upon God by humble and earnest prayer,
- 22:38Speaker 1: and then act according to the best light you have.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Act according to what you are persuaded upon. The whole
- 22:46Speaker 1: will be most for your spiritual advantage. Take great care
- 22:51Speaker 1: that you do not judge rashly, that you do not
- 22:54Speaker 1: lightly think any to be false prophets. And when you
- 22:59Speaker 1: have full proof, see that no anger or contempt have
- 23:03Speaker 1: any place in your heart. After this, in the presence
- 23:08Speaker 1: and in the fear of God, determine for yourself. I
- 23:12Speaker 1: can only say, if by experience you find that the
- 23:16Speaker 1: hearing them hurts your soul.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Then hear them not.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Then quietly refrain and hear those that profit you. If
- 23:26Speaker 1: on the other hand, you find it does not hurt
- 23:28Speaker 1: your soul, you may hear them still.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Only take heed how.
- 23:33Speaker 1: You hear, Beware of them and of their doctrine. Here
- 23:38Speaker 1: with fear and trembling, lest you should be deceived and
- 23:41Speaker 1: given up like them to a strong delusion, as they
- 23:46Speaker 1: continually mingle truth and lies. How easily may you take
- 23:50Speaker 1: in both together Here with fervent and continual prayer to
- 23:55Speaker 1: Him who alone teacheth man wisdom, and see that you
- 23:59Speaker 1: bring whatever you hear to the law and to the testimony.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Receive nothing untried, nothing till it is weighed in the
- 24:07Speaker 1: balance of the sanctuary. Believe nothing they say unless it
- 24:12Speaker 1: is clearly confirmed by passages of holy writ. Holy reject
- 24:16Speaker 1: whatsoever differs therefrom whatever is not confirmed thereby, and in
- 24:22Speaker 1: particular reject with the utmost abhorrence whatsoever is described as
- 24:28Speaker 1: the way of salvation that is either different from or
- 24:32Speaker 1: short of the way our Lord has marked out in
- 24:36Speaker 1: the foregoing discourse. I cannot conclude without addressing a few
- 24:41Speaker 1: plain words to those of whom we have now been speaking.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Oh ye false.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Prophets, oh ye dry bones, hear ye for once the
- 24:51Speaker 1: word of the Lord.
- 24:52Speaker 2: How long will ye lie in the name of.
- 24:55Speaker 1: God saying God hath spoken and God.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Hath not spoken by ye?
- 25:00Speaker 1: How long will ye pervert the right ways of the Lord,
- 25:04Speaker 1: putting darkness for light and light for darkness. How long
- 25:08Speaker 1: will ye teach the way of death and call it
- 25:11Speaker 1: the way of life? How long will ye deliver to
- 25:14Speaker 1: Satan the souls whom ye profess to bring unto God?
- 25:19Speaker 1: War unto you, ye blind leaders of the blind, For
- 25:23Speaker 1: ye shut the Kingdom of Heaven against men. Ye neither
- 25:26Speaker 1: go in yourselves neither suffer ye, them that are entering
- 25:31Speaker 1: to go in, Them that would strive to enter in
- 25:35Speaker 1: at the straight gate, you call back unto the broad way,
- 25:39Speaker 1: them that have scarce gone one step in the ways
- 25:42Speaker 1: of God. You devilishly caution against going too far. Them
- 25:47Speaker 1: that just begin to hunger and thirst after righteousness, you
- 25:51Speaker 1: warn not to be righteous over much. Thus you cause
- 25:56Speaker 1: them to stumble at the very threshold yea, to fall
- 26:00Speaker 1: and rise no more.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Oh, wherefore do ye this? What prophet? Is there in
- 26:05Speaker 2: their blood?
- 26:06Speaker 1: When they go down to the pit, miserable prophet to you,
- 26:11Speaker 1: they shall perish in their iniquity, But their blood will
- 26:15Speaker 1: God require at your hands? Where are your eyes? Where
- 26:22Speaker 1: is your understanding? Have ye deceived others till you have
- 26:26Speaker 1: deceived yourselves?
- 26:28Speaker 2: Also?
- 26:29Speaker 1: Who hath required this at your hands? To teach a
- 26:32Speaker 1: way which ye never knew? Are you given up to
- 26:36Speaker 1: so strong a delusion that ye not only teach but
- 26:39Speaker 1: believe a lie? And can you possibly believe that God
- 26:44Speaker 1: hath sent you, that ye are his messengers? Nay, if
- 26:48Speaker 1: the Lord had sent you, the work of the Lord
- 26:51Speaker 1: would prosper in your hand, as the Lord liveth If
- 26:55Speaker 1: ye were messengers of God, he would confirm the word
- 26:58Speaker 1: of his messengers. But the work of the Lord doth
- 27:02Speaker 1: not prosper in your hand. You bring no sinners to repentance.
- 27:06Speaker 1: The Lord doth not confirm your word, for you save
- 27:10Speaker 1: no souls from death. How can you possibly evade the
- 27:15Speaker 1: force of our Lord's words, so full, so strong, so express?
- 27:20Speaker 1: How can ye evade knowing yourselves by your fruits, evil
- 27:25Speaker 1: fruits of evil trees? And how should it be otherwise
- 27:29Speaker 1: do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Take this to yourselves, ye, to whom it belongs, Oh,
- 27:37Speaker 1: ye bearn trees? Why cumber ye the ground? Every good
- 27:41Speaker 1: tree bringeth forth good fruit? See not that here is
- 27:45Speaker 1: no exception. Take knowledge, then ye are not good trees,
- 27:50Speaker 1: For ye do not bring forth good fruit. But a
- 27:53Speaker 1: corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. And so heav ye done.
- 27:58Speaker 1: From the beginning. Your speaking as from God has only
- 28:03Speaker 1: confirmed them that heard you in the tempers, if not
- 28:06Speaker 1: the works of the devil, Oh, take warning of him
- 28:10Speaker 1: in whose name he speak Before the sentence he hath pronounced.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Take place.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn
- 28:19Speaker 1: down and cast into the fire, My dear brethren, harden
- 28:27Speaker 1: not your hearts. You have too long shut your eyes
- 28:31Speaker 1: against the light. Open them now, before it is too late,
- 28:36Speaker 1: before you are cast into outer darkness. Let not any
- 28:41Speaker 1: temporal consideration weigh with you, For eternity is at stake.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Ye have run before ye were sent. Oh, go not farther.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Do not persist to damn yourselves and them that hear you.
- 28:57Speaker 2: You have no fruit of your labors.
- 29:00Speaker 1: And why is this even because the Lord is not
- 29:04Speaker 1: with you? But can you go this warfare at your
- 29:08Speaker 1: own cost?
- 29:09Speaker 2: It cannot be.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Then, humble yourselves before him, cry unto him out of
- 29:15Speaker 1: the dust, that he may first quicken thy soul. Give
- 29:19Speaker 1: THEE the faith that worketh by love, that is lowly
- 29:23Speaker 1: and meek, pure and merciful, zealous of good works, rejoicing
- 29:28Speaker 1: in tribulation, in reproach, in distress, in persecution for righteousness sake.
- 29:34Speaker 1: So shall the spirit of glory and of Christ rest
- 29:38Speaker 1: upon THEE, and it shall appear that God hath sent THEE.
- 29:42Speaker 1: So shalt thou indeed do the work of an evangelist,
- 29:46Speaker 1: and make full proof of thy ministry. So shall the
- 29:49Speaker 1: word of God in thy mouth be in hammer that
- 29:52Speaker 1: breaketh the rocks in pieces. It shall then be known
- 29:56Speaker 1: by thy fruits that thou art a prophet of the Lord,
- 30:00Speaker 1: even by the children whom God hath given thee. And
- 30:04Speaker 1: having turned many to righteousness, thou shalt shine as the
- 30:08Speaker 1: stars forever and ever. The end of Sermon thirty two
