- An execution began and did not end. That is the news this morning out of Nashville. And it is the question a Christian has to carry into the day: what does justice look like when the machinery of justice falters in public? This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. Christa Gail Pike was scheduled to die last night at a maximum security prison in Nashville. She is fifty years old. She was convicted of a brutal nineteen ninety-five murder she committed at eighteen — the killing of her classmate Colleen Slemmer at a Knoxville job training center. Pike has never denied doing it. What happened next is hard to describe cleanly. A federal appeals court first halted the execution to review whether Pike's history of severe childhood sexual abuse was properly weighed at sentencing. The Supreme Court lifted that stay. Three justices dissented. The execution went forward. Then, according to Pike's lawyers, it didn't work. They told the Tennessee Supreme Court she was given two syringes of pentobarbital at eight twenty-six p.m. and was still alive and snoring. They called it cruel and unusual. She would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in at least two hundred years. Her boyfriend, seventeen at the time, who carved a pentagram into the victim's body, received life in prison. Pike alone got death. Colleen Slemmer's mother wanted this execution. She traveled from Florida. She has waited more than thirty years. Her grief is not abstract. Christians disagree about capital punishment, in good faith, from the same Bible. What Scripture does not permit is cruelty, or indifference to either the victim or the condemned. Both bear the image of God. Genesis nine, verse six, grounds the gravity of human life. Romans twelve, verse nineteen, reminds us vengeance belongs to the Lord. Hold those together and you'll feel the tension the courts felt last night. Keep Romans twelve open in Bible Copilot if you want to follow along today. While the courts worked through the night, another story surfaced in South Dakota. Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has filed for divorce from her husband Bryon after thirty-four years of marriage. The filing was made in April and posted online Monday. The complaint cites irreconcilable differences. They have three children. Noem was ousted from the Trump cabinet in March, a day after members of Congress questioned her about an alleged affair with a top adviser — allegations she denied as, quote, tabloid garbage. Three decades of covenant do not come apart in a press release. There are children carrying this today. Proverbs five warns against the ways marriages quietly erode long before anyone files paperwork. The warning is not about scandal. It's about tending the thing while it's still yours to tend. A thread runs under both stories: public lives, private wreckage, and the slow exposure of what was already true. Luke twelve, verse two — nothing is covered up that will not be revealed. That is not a threat. It is a mercy. It invites repentance before exposure forces it. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. And one concrete practice: examine one hidden corner of your own life before God. Not to spiral. To confess. This episode is presented by Bible Copilot. Open Bible Copilot and study today's Verse of the Day first. A guided study walks you through what the passage says, what it means, what it teaches about God, and how to apply it. Hebrews four, verse thirteen: no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Every courtroom. Every marriage. Every hidden thing. God sees it all with perfect justice and perfect mercy — and in Christ, those two things finally meet. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. The headlines are heavy today, but the Judge of all the earth will do right. Carry that into your day. I'll see you tomorrow.
