- 1:49three. So now that whole block is complete. This episode originally aired on
- 1:53May the nineteenth of nineteen fifty three, and the program that was before it,
- 1:59the Rochester Theft Matter, aired on March, was one WE broadcast on
- 2:06March the ninth of twenty twelve, so this would have appeared probably about March
- 2:09sixteenth. Anyway, to reiterate the bar a cast date here from May the
- 2:15nineteenth of nineteen fifty three is the Emily Braddock Matter. The wbbm Are Theater,

- 4:06Healthful, refreshing, delicious expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dawler to the
- 4:27Baltimore Liability and Trust Corporation, four eighteen Virginia Boulevard, Baltimore, Maryland.
- 4:31The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Emily Braddock matter.
- 4:42Expense account Item one one hundred and fifty eight dollars and sixteen cents Plain
- 4:46Fair and Incidentals, Hartford to Santa Barbara. My mid morning arrival was timed
- 4:50for the sun and the sea to show off a sizable and pleasantly crowded harbor,
- 4:55some sprawling hotels, to lush, green golf courses, acres and acres
- 5:00of snug expensive homes. At the police station, my contact, the Sergeant
- 5:05Lopez, was out, so I went over to the Harbor Inn and met
- 5:09the victimized hotel operator, Glenn Sheridan, Tall, gray haired, slacks,
- 5:14sports shirts, sun tan, and sandals. On the face of it,
- 5:17you'd think I'd been in the hotel business twenty minutes instead of twenty years.
- 5:20The way that woman took me, well, she's done the same thing in
- 5:24several other nice hotels up and down the coast. If that's any comfort,
- 5:28well it isn't. I suppose the thing that bothers me most is that if
- 5:31she walked through that door right now and told me none of it was true,
- 5:34I'd probably believe her. She was that good, mister Dollar. She
- 5:40was the best. She pranced in her as big as life, and I
- 5:44probably didn't have a nickel in her purse once more. For the whole four
- 5:47days she was here, she didn't break her stride once. What do you
- 5:49mean, well, only the best of everything. Well, she gave you
- 5:55a check for eight hundred and thirteen dollars a rightfully right, and I took
- 6:01it no questions. Every night in the dining room she'd order champagne, special
- 6:08dishes. I've seen my share of grifters and bad check artists, but she
- 6:12chopped them all. Perfume, clothes, luggage, conversation and a very pretty
- 6:17woman. Dollar beautiful. In fact, she checked in alone, registered as
- 6:20missus Robert Payne, Beverly Hills. Right. The strike you is odd that
- 6:26a woman would check into a place like this, a resort hotel, alone.
- 6:30No, she wasn't alone long. She met other people, became friends
- 6:34of at least half a dozen guests in the place. Uh huh, the
- 6:39way she was throwing my money around. Why not she picked up all the
- 6:42tabs. Well, ordinarily I'd have been suspicious under those circumstances, mister dollar,
- 6:46but she threw me off right from the very start. How's that missus
- 6:50Shadow? Well, she showed up about midnight, came in a cab that
- 6:55was just loaded down with expensive luggage while they wrote a bad check for that
- 6:59someplace. Yeah. Probably. She came swinging in the lobby with a cabby
- 7:01following her and told the night clerk she wanted to see me. When I
- 7:05came down to the desk, she yelled, Sherry ran up and kissed me
- 7:09and asked how my wife was. Can you beat that? Nope? She
- 7:13acted as though we knew each other, and one of those tricks your mind
- 7:16plays on you in this business. I actually thought I remembered her from some
- 7:19place. I see she registered is missus Robert Payne said she was on her
- 7:25way back from Lake Tahoe, wanted to rest up something about just getting a
- 7:29divorce and being awarded three thousand a month alimally. That impressed me. Well,
- 7:33I didn't impress anyone, Missus Sheridan, and I did make a check.
- 7:36She gave her home address as Beverly Hills, and there was Robert Pain
- 7:41listed there. Later on I found out he's in Europe with his wife and
- 7:45children. But his name was in the book, and that was enough for
- 7:47me. She had a wonderful four days here, I'll say that for her.
- 7:51Getting back to that part about her looking familiar, there's nothing in that
- 7:56dollar. I did think I had seen her before, and of course she
- 7:58helped me think it, but I was too embarrassed to press the matter with
- 8:01her. I guess if you have a copy of her hotel account, I'd
- 8:05like to look it over. Now, Hey, police have the check she
- 8:11gave me. It was drawn on a bank in Beverly Hills. Was it
- 8:15personalized? No, maybe I should have thought something of that. Eh,
- 8:20well, here's this much. I can't stand and look it over. It
- 8:22makes me kind of sick. Eight hundred and thirteen dollars. I spent another
- 8:33hour with mister Sheridan as he distastefully covered the items on the bills she'd paid
- 8:37with a bad check. Later that afternoon, I met with Sergeant Lopez,
- 8:41who reported a woman answering the same description had passed bad checks in Burlingame.
- 8:46Santa Maria and OHI Expense account Item two one hundred and fourteen dollars eighty five
- 8:58cents transportation to my Ray and Santa Cruz, where I interviewed the other two
- 9:03clients who had filed claims. Their stories were much the same as Sheridan's.
- 9:13Expencer count item three four dollars fifteen cents long distance phone call at you,
- 9:18Johnny, Yeah, Frank. All the claims are pretty solid. The police
- 9:22have no line on this. Come home, Oh hop down a Malibu beach,
- 9:26she's done it again, and a place go for sea side in.
- 9:28The guy who runs it found out it was bad fifteen minutes after she left.
- 9:31That was this morning. I don't expect any miracles, but if you
- 9:35get down there right away, maybe you can get on her trail. Well,
- 9:37we'll try it. Expenser count item four thirty eight dollars even transportation Santa
- 9:48Barbara to Malibu. I didn't even bother to listen to it as grundled hotel
- 9:52proprietor repeat a story I knew so well, but went directly to the Sheriff's
- 9:56station and Sergeant Pell's well, that's about the picture. She was at the
- 10:00inn for four days and checked out this morning. She used the name Bradley,
- 10:03Ellen, Bradley. She can't be too far ahead of you now,
- 10:07Now there might be a break on this one too. While she was at
- 10:09the end, she took up with one of our local residents, a man
- 10:13by the name of Garland, lives over in the colony. He drove her
- 10:16into town this morning. Have you talked to him? I can't find him
- 10:18anywhere. He has a house over in the colony. Colony, Yeah,
- 10:22that's down the road, apiece. They call it that because a lot of
- 10:24movie stars both beach homes there a long time ago, movie colony. Oh
- 10:26yeah, this Garland an actor. Yeah, when he gets work, which
- 10:33isn't very often, I guess mainly he keeps sun tanned. And we're trying
- 10:37to look at him now. As soon as we do it, I'm sure
- 10:39the sergeant pells, yeah right away, Garland's home. Now. I went
- 10:52with Sergeant Pearls to talk with Garland, who was in trunks and sunglasses in
- 10:56front of his house. A healthy, muscular, handsome man in his mid
- 11:01thirties. He was a little stunned by the news we brought him Ellen and
- 11:05phoning sergeant, are you sure about this, Well, you can ask the
- 11:09man at the Seaside and he got the check, and mister Dolla here has
- 11:13been looking all over the state for her. Well, come, well,
- 11:18let's cope into the house. All right. I thought I knew her pretty
- 11:22well. Did you meet her out here? That you know her? Before?
- 11:26I met her at the Seaside Inn the first night she was here?
- 11:31All right, thank you? I said, oh, like something to drink?
- 11:37I know, thank you? Not now? Thanks? I understand you
- 11:39drove her into Los Angeles, that's right. I took her in this morning.
- 11:43Where did you take it? Beverly Glen Hotel? Did she check you
- 11:46in there? No? She just dumped all her luggage. She told me
- 11:50she didn't know whether or not she'd have to go to Chicago tonight, something
- 11:52about a house she owned there that had to be rented us solely. Did
- 11:56you leave her there? No? She made a phone call, said she
- 11:58had to meet a lawyer. She saved. Where. Yeah, a bar
- 12:01in Hollywood, top her on Conger. So I drove her over there and
- 12:07left her. When was this, oh, three hours ago? About one
- 12:11o'clock. I guess how is she dressed? A black strapless job? Did
- 12:18she mention any names, tell you anything about herself. Yeah, she told
- 12:22me that six months ago her little two year old boy was killed in an
- 12:26anomobile accident. She said that was the thing that broke up her marriage to
- 12:30this Bradley guy. Uh huh, said she needed to believe in something again,
- 12:35that she needed someone to believe in her. Well, I figured her
- 12:39for a pretty nice person, just having a little fling, even with what
- 12:43you've told me. I believe that, bottom Why because she told me,
- 12:46and she cried little when she was telling me. Oh, I don't care
- 12:50how you look at me. I don't think anyone could invent a story that
- 12:54tragic without some sort of basis. Well maybe you've got a point, Golan,
- 12:58But a good liar can see a story in a newspaper adapted to his
- 13:01own needs and maybe even cry a little about it. All. I still
- 13:05believe it, you know, mister Donne, You ought to try believing that
- 13:09people tell you sometime. Yeah, I'll try it next time. I have
- 13:13two weeks off in my business. They call that a vacation. Well,
- 13:28well, pay Gent's police. I'm like to talk to the man who was
- 13:31on Judy here at one o'clock this afternoon. Oh that's me, sergeant.
- 13:35My name's Lenny Pollard. Anything wrong now, just routine? Well can I
- 13:37get you something now? Thank you. We're trying to locate a woman who's
- 13:41been using the name Ellen Bradley. We were told she was in here around
- 13:45one o'clock today. I don't recognize that name. About five or five,
- 13:50dark brown hair, brown eyes, or a black strapless summer dress when last
- 13:54scene thirty year under it. No, No one like that one o'clock.
- 14:00It's a pretty quiet time. In fact, all afternoon's been quiet. No
- 14:03woman like that's been in hum at all. Have you been here all the
- 14:05time? Yeah, on duty since eleven o'clock that's when we open. Are
- 14:09you sure this is the right place? The top it? Sorry, wish
- 14:13I could help you. When we got to the Beverly Glen Hotel, a
- 14:22worried clerk was still wondering what to do with the fourteen pieces of luggage Ellen
- 14:26Bradley had left there earlier. No, she hadn't phoned in and given them
- 14:31any instructions. No, she was not registered at the hotel. Sergeant Pell's
- 14:35made arrangements for a man to cover the lobby in case she showed up to
- 14:37claim her things. By eight the next morning, the Central Identification Bureau and
- 14:46Sacramento made a positive identification on a thumbprint taken from her room at the Seaside
- 14:50Hotel. She was identified as Emily Miles Braddock. Her nearest living relative was
- 14:56a sister, Elaine address twelve East Orange Avenue, Los Angeles. You you're
- 15:05on there? Yes? Who are you looking for? Elaine Braddock? Are
- 15:11you miss Braddock? What do you want? I'd like to talk to you
- 15:15for a minute. I'm not selling anything. I'm an insurance investigator. You
- 15:20sure you have the right party, Elaine Braddock? Come on, I miss
- 15:26it. Just open the door and come on. Kimani and Kimanian want to
- 15:43see me here? I am What do you want to see me about?
- 15:48The gray haired woman who had cackled at me from the second story, who
- 15:50was sitting in a wheelchair by the window. My name is Johnny Dollar.
- 15:58I'm here about your sister, Oh, Emily, huh, Yes, we're
- 16:03trying to find her. Has she been around here? We know she's in
- 16:08the Los Angeles area. Emily was here a little bit yesterday afternoon. Where
- 16:14she's gone now, I don't know, have no idea. How long was
- 16:17she here? Oh? She stayed maybe two or three hours. I hope
- 16:21I don't ever see her again. She's no good. Well how did she
- 16:23get here? By car cab? I don't know, just standing at the
- 16:29door yesterday, the same as you all of a sudden. Well how did
- 16:33she leave? Walked? Tried to borrow some money from me, but I
- 16:37wouldn't give her nothing, so she had to walk. Did she make any
- 16:38phone calls or see anybody else while she was here? She made a call?
- 16:44Any idea who it was? No? Did you happen to hear anything
- 16:48she said on the phone? No? Showing up here just like that,
- 16:52after not writing and letting me hear from her all the time, she was
- 16:55away getting herself in trouble with the police, being in jail ten years ago,
- 17:00when I got hurt, she promised she'd take care of me. Look
- 17:03how she's done it. I have to live on the county. You know
- 17:07that. I got to live on the county and nobody cares about me.
- 17:11Is she in bad trouble? I'm afraid so. Well. How bad is
- 17:17it? Mister? Oh? Ten years? Maybe ten years? Ten years
- 17:25two was bad enough, but ten what'd you say your name was Dollar,
- 17:33mister Dollar, I hope you don't catch her. Even if she kills someone,
- 17:38I hope you don't catch her. And I hear you're only young a
- 17:45little while and that's all you got ten years in prison, and she'd she'd
- 17:52come up worse off than I am. Friends, wherever you are, whatever

- 18:56Healthful refreshing, delicious, and now with our star John Lung, we bring
- 19:08you the second act of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar. That afternoon of
- 19:26follow up came on Emily Miles Braddock. The completed folder included a mugshot that
- 19:32showed a woman of thirty years with dark brown hair, wide set eyes,
- 19:36a well formed nose and mouth. I took it with me when I went
- 19:38back to see Tom Garland. Oh, hi, hi, mind if I
- 19:47come in? What now your friend? What about her? I've been thinking
- 19:51about what you told me about her yesterday. That's nice. Here, take
- 19:56a look at this. That's her, isn't it? Yo? Yeah,
- 20:00that's sir. Can we talk now? Okay, come on. Her name's
- 20:11Emily Braddock, not Ellen Bradley hop. Until two months ago, she was
- 20:15in the State Correction Home for Women, serving a two year term for grand
- 20:19theft. Yeah. Take your picture of that. I'm not pushing my weight
- 20:22showing it to your Garland. But you're a little stubborn about what you want
- 20:26to believe about her. She lost a baby, as she told you,
- 20:29she was in prison when it happened. I thought I'd better prove this live,
- 20:33all right, So you proved you mind if I sit down. Thanks,
- 20:40Well, do you have anything else to tell me? Oh? I
- 20:42suppose I do, since you don't want to seem to You just don't seem
- 20:45to want to tell me anything. I've been on this case almost a week
- 20:48now, and that time I've talked to eight different men who have met Emily
- 20:52Braddock and one woman who knew her by her real name and for what she
- 20:56really is, Garland. Every one of those people came out on the short
- 21:02end of things with her just a minute time. I've looked at this mugshot.
- 21:04I've heard these men describe her, and I think I can understand why.
- 21:08It's not hard to imagine this face set off with a nice hairdoo,
- 21:11some ear rings, makeup, and the works. This sister of hers I
- 21:17met this morning lives in a very crummy neighborhood, a family home. She's
- 21:22all Emily has left. Oh vice versa. Emily walked out on her.
- 21:26Well, it's as bad as you say it is. Why shouldn't she?
- 21:29For one reason, her sister is a hopeless cripple, But even she would
- 21:33protect Emily. You're my only hope what this woman can get away from us
- 21:38right now? She's smart and clever. She can go right on doing the
- 21:42same things she's been doing all along. Oh, she'll get caught eventually.
- 21:45But because I know her and she passed a few bad checks doesn't mean that
- 21:48I'm responsible in anyway. You know that you're right, It doesn't. But
- 21:52you're involved just the same. You're different from a hotel man who's been tilted.
- 21:59You're a boyfriend, true, just a four day boyfriend. But a
- 22:03woman like that can do a lot of damage in four days time. Why
- 22:04you're here, dollar, what do you want? I'm here to disillusion your
- 22:07garland because I don't think you're disillusioned enough right now. No, wait a
- 22:11minute. I you're a perfect stranger to me. I don't know you from
- 22:14a grand rapid's chair, but I'm doing you a favor telling you that Emily
- 22:18Braddock is a crook and a thief and a forger, and that everything she
- 22:21ever told you was a lie. Now and then, a woman walks into
- 22:25a man's life that he'd sell his soul for. But don't ever do any
- 22:27business along those lines with this baby, because all she'll do is give you
- 22:30a bad check for it. She's troubled in a great big way, Garland,
- 22:33and you know it as well as I do. What do you want
- 22:36me to do apologize for meeting her? I'll be satisfied if you tell me
- 22:40why you lied, Garland. Emily Braddock never went to that bar you were
- 22:45talking about earlier. You didn't drop her off there. No one there had
- 22:48even seen her. And she's the kind who could walk into the World Series
- 22:52with fifty thousand other people around and still be noticed. Where is she now?
- 22:57I don't know. I won't buy that not from you. Now,
- 23:03let's try once more. Where is she? What did you do with her
- 23:07after you dropped the luggage off at the Beverly Glenn Hotel? Where did you
- 23:10take her? She phoned you from her sister's house yesterday afternoon, didn't she?
- 23:15Right after I'd been here with Sergeant Pals Garland. You should see that
- 23:19sister Ellen's in Cinta, Monica where at a little hotel called el Tonquees.
- 23:27She's registered. There's Evelyn Brady. Where's your phone? It's over there Operator
- 23:41Sheriff's office. Please thank you? Dollar? Yeah, dollar could have been
- 23:48fixed so that she wouldn't know that. I told you could be all of
- 23:52us beats me. I don't understand it. What oh, what you've told
- 23:56me is true. I know. Ago she called me up and said,
- 24:00Tom, I love you. That sounded true too. I told her I
- 24:06loved her. Now I'm turning her in. Kind of a crazy world do
- 24:10we live in? Twenty minutes later, Sergeant Pells and I were in the
- 24:18rick of the elevator and the El Tanqui Hotel. A place is dingy and
- 24:22old is the Spanish name. It born a little different from the swank hotels
- 24:27where our suspect had lived. So Gaily Pells was thinking of it too,
- 24:36some joint this is yeah, what was it? Five eighteen? Yeah,
- 24:40it's down this way. I think this one kind of harpoons you a little.
- 24:48Eh, Yeah, I suppose. So. There are a lot worse
- 24:52things than passing bad checks and telling lies. The way she handled it.
- 24:57No one even raised an eyebrow. Yeah, I hear it is yes,
- 25:14Emily Braddock. Beg your pardon, I said, it's your name, Emily
- 25:18Braddock. You must have the wrong room. My name is Evelyn Brady.
- 25:21Sorry, miss, you're the one we want. I'll have to change into
- 25:25address. I'll check the room. Excuse me, what's this all about?
- 25:30I think you already know. I have no idea. What is it all
- 25:33about? Bad checks? There must be some mistake, all right, miss,
- 25:40go ahead and change. We'll wait out here. Thank you. I'm
- 25:45sorry. We'll have to keep this open a little bit. Oh you can
- 25:48dress behind it if you want. If that doesn't suit you, way,
- 25:51we'll take you down like you are. Thanks again. I had two windows
- 25:57on the outside, no ledge, fire ladders across the court, and he
- 26:00lugged a little makeup kit Tella. Yeah, now that you've seen him,
- 26:14what do you think? Well, I'm only a human. Too bad,
- 26:19she's a crook. Emily Braddock was held at the Sheriff's office in Malibu.
- 26:33The officers who questioned her reported that she steadfastly refused to admit any part of
- 26:37some sixteen counts that have been filed against her. I wasn't surprised to learn
- 26:42this, but I was surprised when she sent word that she'd like to see
- 26:45me before I left town. Hi, here, you're about ready to beat
- 26:52it. Uh huh. You're the one who talked to him, aren't you
- 26:56talk to who? Tell me? Garland? He told you where I was,
- 26:59didn't he? YEA, sure he did. I thought you wanted to
- 27:03tell me something you thought wrong, the same as all these others around here.
- 27:07I'm not going to tell you or anybody else anything. Police are like
- 27:11hotel man. You figure out their little system and then you beat it.
- 27:15If you say so, I don't have a lot of time. We could
- 27:18be pretty good friends. You and I at the saidd and come up,
- 27:19I mean a drink or something together. We did it look nice, Emily.
- 27:26You're the one who got him to tell where I was, and he
- 27:29asked you to fix it so I wouldn't know. Oh yeah, tell me
- 27:33you do that. I know. What I don't know is what you said
- 27:36to him. How did you get him to tell? Is that all you're
- 27:38interested in. It's not asking anything. I told him just what you are,
- 27:45A thief, a crook that sold him. Well, he told me
- 27:49where to find you. I guess it did. Hm. I must be
- 27:55slipping. He slept a long time ago when you walked out on that sister
- 27:59of yours, when you thought you could talk and look your way into anything
- 28:03you wanted. I didn't know I thought that. But if you say so,
- 28:06whatever I've got, it's worked, has it? Two years? The
- 28:10last time? Whatever you get. This time will be longer, no matter
- 28:14what you say or don't say. I'm not in the courtroom yet. That's
- 28:17where it happens, not in a lousy jail. We'll see about that.
- 28:18You're just as bad and just as dumb as the worst of any day.
- 28:22You believe that. Like it says in the manual, when a woman's suspect
- 28:29is to be interrogated, remember that the strongest appeal to her is in her
- 28:33family connections and moral outlook. Question her regarding these dinking cops, just stinking
- 28:41cops. You never give up to you, hardly ever. Stinking cop.

- 31:33Charles Lyon inviting you to join us again next week at the same time when
- 31:37from Hollywood, John Lund returns as yours truly, Johnny Dollar. This is
- 31:51the CBS Radio Network, Welcome back. While I always chair for finding lost
- 32:00episodes, but there is that occasional lost episode that, after listening to it,
- 32:07not so sure you're glad was found. Such is the case with the
- 32:10Emily Braddock matter. Be clear, I want the whole Johnny Dollar cannon,
- 32:15complete, good, bad and ugly, but this one was really, probably,
- 32:21to be honest, one of the worst of the pre Bailey Johnny dollars.
- 32:27Elements of this story were combined with the far better John Long's story,
- 32:30the Thelma Ipsen Matter, to produce the Broaderick Matter, one of the finest
- 32:36Johnny Dollar stories ever told. And you can't help, or at least I
- 32:40can't help listening to this compare it to the emotional power and clever storytelling that
- 32:49made that such a compelling drama, and this has none of it. We
- 32:52basically have Johnny on the hunt for a con woman, which and she's Her
- 33:02simple trick is to tell people lies, and they that are concocted, and
- 33:07they believe them. It may be realistic, it's not terribly interesting, and
- 33:14there was no surprise in finding the criminal. We find Emily Braddock, a
- 33:21female sociopath, and we find she's a sociopath. And probably the thing that
- 33:27did it most for me was Johnny and his closing remarks indicating that he was
- 33:32scared of her. Oh yeah, I'm not even sure I can find words
- 33:37to describe that. With all the things that Johnny faces on the show,
- 33:42what really scares him is a seductive bad check artist good gravy. And again,
- 33:50it's just shocking that an episode like this could provide any creative input for
- 34:00an episode that was so much better in the broader matter. But at any
- 34:05rate, onto listener comments and feedback, and we turned to a comment from
- 34:10Tim regarding the Michael Meani mirage manner. It says there are different kinds of
- 34:19noise heard on today's OTR recordings, the melancholy memory Matter had the distinctive underwall
- 34:24in quality I recognized as digital sub sampling. Many of the MP three's we
- 34:30listened to on Your Show are copies of copies the original performance, added rattling
- 34:36script pages, coughs, and off stage sirens. The transcription disc cut during
- 34:42the performance may have been clean and clear daring rebroadcasts, but with age and
- 34:46repeated replane many now sound like snamp, crackle and pomp. In the seventies
- 34:52and eighties, many discs were copy to set tapes in the original disc thrown
- 34:55away, adding tape hiss to the mix. Many rare Doctor Who or Gene
- 35:00Shepherd episodes are only available today because some listeners illegally recorded them off their radios
- 35:08on to reel tape, preserving the radio static. When the music world adapted
- 35:14CDs as the standard, music producers could go back to the vaults and make
- 35:16fresh mixes from master tapes of classic albums optimized to take advantage of CD clarity.
- 35:23The OTR world was not so lucky. In the nineties, I converted
- 35:27many vinyl albums and cassettes on my underpowered three eighty six PC. The key
- 35:32operation is analog to digital conversion. Changed the signal from vibrating needle to a
- 35:39digital wave file by sampling forty four thousand times a second, then convert the
- 35:44six hundred and fifty megabyte wave file to a reasonably sized thirty megabyte MP three.
- 35:51My cheap equipment and primitive algorithms couldn't always keep up with the data flow.
- 35:55I'd get bored with the slow conversion process and open up a new window
- 36:00to read noosesnet all while downloading MP three's from Napster. The CPU and the
- 36:05file bupper couldn't keep up and would start subsampling, grabbing samples whenever it could.
- 36:10It made a wave file alright, but with an unintentional variable bitrate.
- 36:15During the MP three conversion, the algorithm looks for any frequency it can to
- 36:22fit through the reduced number of samples, and often locks onto a very low
- 36:27frequency. This leads to the rumbling, muffled underwater sound we heard on the
- 36:31Johnny Dollar episode. Most of the radio episodes from the otl R group are
- 36:37don rtight direct from transcription disc using the finest equipment, but others were done
- 36:42by amateurs like me with more enthusiasm than talent. Well, thanks so much
- 36:49for those insights, Tim, and you really do kind of see a mix
- 36:52of good and bad with the ot r R recordings. They have some very
- 36:59talent people who work on these disks and work on these sets to get the
- 37:05best sample they can and to use original transcription disc if they can. But
- 37:12in some cases original material is gone and all we have are corrupted recordings from
- 37:20one source or another. And while I prefer the higher quality sound, I'm
- 37:24of the mind that something is better than nothing. If say, all of
- 37:30the missing episodes of Johnny Dollar and Dragnet were available with the same sound quality
- 37:37as the Michael Meani mirage matter, I'd say, good deal, and we
- 37:42would obviously play them and enjoy them as best we can. Obviously I love
- 37:49the better sound quality, but when we're dealing with old time, radio is
- 37:52just not an option. And it happens because of the short sidedness of many
- 37:59people on the radio industry who never imagine that people would want to listen to
- 38:04their shows later. It's why programs such as Boston Blackie and Box thirteen tend
- 38:09to have at least decent recordings around, because they were syndicated shows in tended
- 38:14to be re aired, but programs like Johnny Dollar just weren't particularly initially,
- 38:20and a lot of these programs, as you notice, come from the Armed
- 38:22Forces, radio and television services that continue to reuse and play these programs into
- 38:30the sixties and even the seventies. Well, that will actually do it for
- 38:32today. We'll be back with one more episode from the John lond Era and
- 38:37tomorrow join us for the adventures of Philip Marlowe. In the meantime, sendra
- 38:43comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow us on Twitter at
