- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: It was the last episode, so if you have not listened to that one, I highly recommend going back and hearing about his experience, how he got involved, his favorite parts, all of it, his whole experience, which was so much fun.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: He's such a nice guy.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: He's genuinely just, just a cool guy.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: I just feel like I piece when I'm in his presence when I'm having a conversation with him.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, yeah, I just feel, I feel like piece.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like he'd be a good friend.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_01]: Just like a calming presence and his new album is out, which like if you need a soundtrack for your Gamma Rolls fall, this one is perfect.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a soundtrack adore in your own life.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Grandly Phillips is his name.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: And
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: And in the hour of justice, this game, this game, it's true, yeah.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: In the hour of dust, this is new album and it came out last week.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: And actually, I think this be, he's going to be here in New York when this episode airs.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm really excited for that.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's just, he's great.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: If you're interested in seeing him live, check out his tour dates because he will be on tour with his new album.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure playing some old faves as well.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was just really great.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: But we wanted to do a tandem episode because the town interpreter, of course, is such an important fixture in the Gilmour Girls world that we thought it would be a disservice to his character to not talk about him in another episode.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: In a separate episode, which we knew was going to be a lot longer than if we had put it all in the same episode, I think it would have been quite a few hours long.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_01]: It would have been a lot.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: I also, it was like, I didn't want him to feel like we had to relive every single moment that he was on something in the way that we wanted to.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like we've been wanting to talk about him like this extensively, but to be like, hey Grant, let's go scene by scene.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: song by song.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: I was like that might be overwhelming.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: I want to learn his experience and then go to the two of us with you, Besty.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: We can, we can y'all about it, the three of us.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we can't hear you yapping back, but we know you do.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_00]: We know you do.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: We know.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: But before we get into the town trip, it'll arrive at all.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: We just want to remind you guys that we'll be in Ann Arbor in two weeks.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: We're so excited.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_00]: I got to order my outfits to count down is here and we're so excited to see you guys literally two weeks from today will be in Ann Arbor together.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh, I'm so right.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm so okay.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: I will say, you just, you did scare me.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_01]: We are recording this a little bit in advance, obviously.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: But in two weeks from this episode, Airing is when we'll be there.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh my gosh, I'm not ready.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm prepared from the time that people are hearing this.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's two weeks.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, yes, yes, yes.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: We're recording this two weeks in advance.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I really, my newly order isn't gonna come in time.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, it will come in time.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_00]: We're recording this.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: way in advance.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: We will be there and oh god it's going to be so much fun.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_00]: I can't believe that it's going to be the 25th anniversary of Gamma Girls.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's coming up so quickly.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm excited there's like a birthday bash because Friday night is the birthday bash for a 25th birthday.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: Is this one I said previously the Gamma Girls could rent a car?
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I was like, I got to stop making that joke.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: I have to, oh, can I make it once?
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: At the every time of the after that, just like why you're repeating the same joke is not funny anymore.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's having a quarter life crisis, if you will.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: It is.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that makes sense.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: If you met Regalmore, she's the epitome of a little crisis sometimes.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_01]: But I will probably repeat that joke if you're in Ann Arbor.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I hope you save it in your heart for that Friday night.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: But we'll have an event that specifically go more to say on Saturday, coffee, coffee, coffee.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: There will be coffee.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: Coffee, coffee, coffee, and coffee.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: And hopefully pop-tarts.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: If there's not pop-tarts, I'm writing.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm probably cutting my own event.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, though, we've got blocks.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: And then I'm most excited.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, I'm not most excited.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'm equally excited for everything, but we've been wanting to do Gilmour Rolls trivia in person.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so bad.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: So bad.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: But there's stuff in store all day long, costume, contest, daisies, little stations to do various things.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: Other shops in town, like literary bookstore involved.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's me great time.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: The information links to tickets, et cetera, are in our show notes, so take a look
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, a huge town we've ever been to.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's so cute and it's so perfect in the fall.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: We even saw a troubadour the last time we were there.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_01]: We did.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: We did see a troubadour.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: We were the cider cells.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was great.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: We're like, really?
- 5:13[SPEAKER_01]: Is that you?
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: It was far from Grant Lee, but it's a true bidour all the same.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I love to.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: The other thing that we announced on Tuesdays are new era on Patreon, I'm very excited about the ReWatch Club.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you guys are too.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: So it's ended.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if you missed it, go back.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, if you missed the whole interview with Grant Lee Phillips, that's also very important too.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: At the beginning of that episode, we did talk about
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: the rewatch club which is our new Patreon experience because we did wrap up the series and we will be talking about a year in the life next week.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: Now that we're wrapped it all up in a little bow.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: But what would fall be?
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: What would go more girls fall be without a fall rewatch?
- 5:53[SPEAKER_00]: So the rewatch nothing.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly nothing zero.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: So the rewatch club is going to be available very soon.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think we
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: crazy.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's a big weekend.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: It's a big week because it's like we have the rewatch club starts.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be in Ann Arbor for the first day of the whole earlier that week.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's really the first day of the fall.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next week we'll be doing our anniversary episode for the 20th anniversary and then Taylor Shnoblin comes out which isn't getting more closely related but it's exciting.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then the 25th anniversary is that Sunday.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: Sunday.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: So, just crazy.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's a big week.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big week.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: A big week to be a Gummer Girls fan.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: It is, yeah.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: So, oh, speaking of, do you want to show her a new nail?
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, I love my, I'm, oh my gosh, you guys.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like a 12 year old.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so excited.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: I've never had nail art before.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_01]: I've only ever just had colors or like, I'll do like an ombre or sparkle, but I wanted to get Gummer Girls nail art because in our Patreon group chat, the girlies were showing us that they had gotten stamps collection,
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: the summer stamps collection specifically on their nails and I was like oh my gosh why have I never thought to put our merch on my nails before?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah so I did a little bit of it which you can see here got like this one's my favorites the pinkies because when you put them together it says la la la but it got a little dragonfly uh I put the Gilmour Girls book on their ace of course
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: the coffee.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: The coffee with a little lip stain on it.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_01]: That she nailed the lip stain.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: She did such a good job.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: Such a good job.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's Rosie.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: Her Instagram handle is Rosie's nail work like work WRK.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_01]: She's in north of Atlanta.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: Any of you want to go get Gilmore girls nails from her.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: She had never seen Gilmore girls before.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, wow.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she did.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: She did a great job.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: She used Emily Kelly's design because maybe there's another Stan's collection coming out.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: Could be the fall.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: Did you know that next episode?
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: And so perhaps she based some of it off of that.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I'm so excited.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: When she was doing it, I was like, oh my god, I feel like I'm 14.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: I've never had Neil art before.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: I've never had Neil art either.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: If ever I've gotten my nails done, it's all been very like, you know, one color.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't even think I've gotten it on break done, but like, I'm usually playing Jane when it comes to my nails.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: I saw the nails and I was like, ooh, cute.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: I love them.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: If you want to see them, I posted them on my Instagram.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, but they're so cute.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: Um, they're so cute.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: I love them.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like that's the only way you could go into Go More Girls Fall.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: Truly.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: Was with Fall nails, and I couldn't just do orange this year.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: So 25th anniversary.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's very special.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: For their birthday, it's true.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, check out the re-watch club.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: We're excited.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: Clearly, we're getting in the spirit in the very way in the spirit.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: And we can't wait, because we love our Patreon members, we love talking to y'all, and we want to skip the party going.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, that's the only way to skip these good vibes going.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: Let's keep these law laws going.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, exactly.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of law laws, let's talk about the downtrooper door.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about the town trivia door.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: I have been so excited for this episode today.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: I know, actually, Tara has been talking about this episode since we interviewed Grant Lee, which was back in July.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we had this episode and she goes, wait.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Should we have an episode about the town trivia door?
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, actually, we just recorded one.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: What are you talking about and she goes, no, we have to talk about the town to talk about him and I was talking about that more as we get into the episode because like there was a moment for me speaking of Patreon where I was like we have to talk to him and also we have to talk about this character.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we have to.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: We have to.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_01]: But you're gonna say something about your t-shirt.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: I actually wore my bleachers t-shirt because I think that Jack Antonoff would be a good counter-bador.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: I also love that it's gonna be like diner vibes, yeah.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it literally says New Jersey take the sadness out of Saturday night and a little New Jersey diner.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: Very cute.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: But I did think that he would be a good counter-bador in my life.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: I want to know who everybody's town troubidore is in their life and I think we talked about this a little bit in our La las strum strums and troubidore in our own second.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, 2022 because we had a music episode we did and we'd briefly talked on the town troubidore, but not like we well today, not in the deep dive way that we want to today.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: So today we are going to go through all of the episodes of the town troubidore is in
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: How he's featured what songs he sings.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go in chronological order and then we are going to talk about We're going to give out some superlatives.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which I'm really excited to say Grammys Yes exactly go on to say Grammys and be well the grantees.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I was like when you first said that I was like, how can I The finagle that to be Grandly Phillips coded the grantees
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, so the Tontribodore in Gilmore Girls is a very pivotal character.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_00]: One that honestly, until we were really dissecting the show on Patreon, I didn't come to fully appreciate what he offers to the narrative, because he offers a lot.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: We did talk about it in our interview on Tuesday with Grant.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: But he's only in 20 episodes total over the course of the entire series that includes a year in the life.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: So we kick that off in that damn donnery which is season one episode 14.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: And he debuts with one of his songs Sunday best when the bus comes around the corner and deans waiting for worry and she has her chick.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Stella famously.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: And the lyrics are, I'm over the moon for you.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: And it's very subtle.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: He's in the background.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's leaned against the lamp post.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's strumming along.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: He's just kind of singing.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: You can kind of make out what he's saying.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: You're not like two focused on him.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: But they really shine a light on him when he crosses at the end of the episode when Laura and Luke are pulling the pink hands out of his truck and he's singing beautiful dreamers.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: And like they are following him.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: He is leading us into the scene
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: and that really sets us up for how he's going to be implemented into the story, not entirely because it really grows as the series progresses, but he is the person that kind of acts as a transitional fixture in pivoting us from scene to scene, in a lot of the ways that he's used.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because when there's not a la la, there's usually like a little troubadour guiding us through, but the thing that's fun about him because I mean, of course with the la la, which we talked about in the music episode, is like the various versions of them are kind of leading our emotions into what kind of scene we're having, whether it's rather intense or sad or joyful, but he's like connecting everyone in this very interesting way,
- 12:46[SPEAKER_01]: and something that I didn't realize until I was like going through all of the songs, everything that he sings in every episode, a majority of them are his songs.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, because I think if you would ask me before I went through all of them, I'd been like, oh, it's a mix of his songs and other songs, but predominantly, it's a predominantly song work.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but there are a lot of covers mixed in, which admittedly I thought with the exception of be true to your school, which happens in secrets and loans, I thought all of it was his music.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, really?
- 13:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I opposite from you was like, oh, it's all him except for that one beach boy song and then as we went through and I really Come through and like searched the lyrics and who they belong to two.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, this is a cover So that was a really fascinating task, but speaking to the emotional journey of the music and Gilmore girls as we spoke to with the Lala's the difference between the Lala's which are notoriously at law and law those are the lyrics
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: The town troubadores songs do have in a lot of instances his lyrics have a lot to do with what's going on in the song or in the scene rather and so and like kind of the tonal shift of everything so beautiful dreamers I didn't really feel that that was necessarily meant to be like oh the lyrics are supposed to mean something really deep for this transition.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: but as we continue through the series, it does.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: And we talked about that a little bit with him on Tuesday about how each song was started, it started to be like curried and crafted to the scene itself, which I really love.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: And you too, one of the ways that I think that that's best implemented is in StarCross lovers and other strangers, which is the next time we see a season one episode
- 14:28[SPEAKER_00]: he sings mockingbirds, which is one of his songs from 1994, and it's a transition between worrying Dean breaking up famously in the junkyard and ushering us into the firelight festival.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: And the scene that he's ushering us into is, of course, everybody all in love, everybody's looking at the fire, suking Jackson, and talking about that one time that she wrote,
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: with Luke and Rachel, and then when Rachel gets up and walks away, Laura like comes and sits down, so it's really juxtaposing, like within the scene, within the narrative, the energy shift from Rachel and Luke versus Laura like Luke.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_00]: And the lyrics are devastation at last, finally we meet.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_00]: And after all of these years out here in the street, I had a feeling you would make yourself known.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: You came along just to claim your place on the throne.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: Now I have been overthrown, which I think, beautiful lyrics.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I don't know if this was intentional, but the way that I saw those lyrics being woven into the scene is that just as Laura Lyon Luke, which in that damn dawn of read,
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: You kind of see it.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: The town tuber comes in while they're unloading these paint cans for this painting date.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_00]: They're about to have they had almost had this well they had a moment, but they almost had maybe perhaps a kiss like the middle of that damped on a read when she's over there picking the paint colors with him and they're kind of sending us up to believe that they're going to have this painting date.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: It gets drilled by Christopher.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: And then in StarCross lovers and other strangers, any connection between the two of them gets derailed by Rachel's return.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: And so this idea of like, I've been devastated and now you and I finally meet.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: We've been here all these years in the street and now we're here and here you come along to overthrow all of this.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: And like that's what Rachel's done.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_00]: She's kind of up ended everything.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_00]: And so I don't know if that was the intention, but I loved connecting those lyrics to the scene.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: No, I felt the same.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like I think that was like one of the first ones where it felt like it was fitting into the scene.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: The one earlier in the episode of Heavenly, I felt the madacly fit.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe not directly into the moment that it's in, but it's that same thing of like star crossed.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_01]: Like I feel like it's introducing the idea of him being reflective of the mood and the tone and the theme in the episode.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like when we get to mocking birds, that's when it's like, ooh, we are reflecting the moment
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: Totally, and I love it.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: I loved that one.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: That one was one of my top one.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: Me too.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: I put it in there as well The third episode he's in is appropriately named the third Laura lie and sings a song called It's the life from the same album as mockingbirds as a transition between Laura lie looking at warrior she's sleeping to maybe tell her about the money from tricks and the next day when she's talking to Sukey about it and the lyrics are
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: If the life you have created has buried you with luxuries outdated and you ask what is the purpose two week to claw your way up to the surface.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: I just thought the luxuries part of it was like yeah because that's kind of the whole theme of the episode.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: Is that like you've got the luxury luxurious life of tricks and Emily and Richard and and tricks being like hey I have all this money and I can give very access to her trust fund because you know money is clearly exchanged hands
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: And Emily's the one being like, nope, you're gonna lose her if she gets that money.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: And how luxury and the idea of money can really shift relationships.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: And it has in the series.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's the biggest, one of the biggest themes.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I really liked that.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_00]: The fourth is Love Dazies and True Badors, and it's the first time we hear the Town True Badors speak.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess up into this point, we'd only ever heard in saying, but this is like when he breaks out onto the scene.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_01]: This is his starring moment.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: And we talked about this a lot in his interview.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: So he sings, Honey, don't think also from 1994.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_00]: After Rory and Lane are talking about Dean and whether or not he's met someone else.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: We also just watched it for the rewatch club about it too long.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: Don't think about it too long.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then he shows up after a lower line of Rachel
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: being kind of evasive.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: And the lyrics are shake off the sadness so it's doing me good, but then the second town troubadour enters.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he does.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, oh, whistle in a long.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: So we see him at the town meeting.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: He has his big scene.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: And this is where I wrote down his guitar case says greatly duct tape.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_01]: I love that that was like when I noticed that when we were watching it in the rewatch club, I had never seen it before Yeah, like it says greatly.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like that's best your name.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think you wears the misty It's on your keys.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's right there.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: Well, Easter egg for all of us
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: One of my favorite lines is, you're supposed to speak through your music, and just so he delivers it, does he?
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: Perfect.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: And he's dubbed the Town Tripodore.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: There can only be one, and he wins.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: He wins.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_01]: I just loved hearing him talk in the interview about how he just gave it his all in the first take.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: Not realizing he was going to have to do it for like 18 more hours.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: So much longer.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god, hilarious.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: Fantastic.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: But my favorite part of that episode, if honestly, there's so many fair parts of that episode.
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: So it's such a good episode.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: Is for the third and final song of it, when he's seeing everybody needs a little sanctuary.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: And the second town troubadour wanders up beside him and they have a little moment of collaboration and he whistles along as he sings.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_00]: That's one of one of my favorite moments too.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_00]: The next time we see him in season two is in presenting Laura like Gilmore.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_00]: And this is one of the funnier ones for me because Laura and Chris are having this moment in the street and it's when Chris tells her about Sherry.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and they're having like why don't we bring up Chris so much in this episode.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_00]: But Chris is there and they're chatting and Laura
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: And he tells her and they kind of have this is a very pivotal moment for their relationship because it's the first time that Chris has really taken a relationship seriously and normalized a little devastated and trying not to show it that he has really gotten his act together seemingly for another woman.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_00]: And it's, you know, they kind of part ways.
- 20:59[SPEAKER_00]: And then the camera turns and there is there he is.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's just right there.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh, jumpscare.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_00]: He's singing lalas, not like the lalas, but he's singing lalas.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: it's called a jubilee and he's loved that it's law laws but it's just law laws and it's there's not another moment where he is singing just law laws and I want to know when that song came out because like I wonder if there's like some sort of like association with it yeah with Gilmour Girls but there is yeah there's not another moment where he's offering us the
- 21:35[SPEAKER_01]: These are the turbidor laws, but it's almost that feeling of like, what can be said?
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, obviously, the link brain, like you're just having to la la your way through it.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I wonder if they did have a song where the lyrics kind of could speak to lower-rise inner monologue, because it says a lot without saying a lot.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, if he had had a set of lyrics that really spoke to that maybe they would have put it in there, but they were just like, hey, these love us?
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: This sounds great.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, it's from 1998, so it predates, it's a grandly buffalo, not just because I know that there's like a mix of like grandly Phillips and grandly buffalo.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_01]: So sure throughout, but it's ultimately grandly.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: So then in the ins and outs of N season two episode H, he sings after Mia and Laura lie talk about
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: Laura, I wanted to open her own in, and Mia wanted to sell the independence in.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: And the lyrics are nothing is for sure as I begin my day.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the only thing that he sings.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I will never get that out of my head when I hear that nothing is for sure.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_00]: I always think of this moment.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: because it is speaking to her inner monologue.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_00]: She's sad.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: She's devastated that Mia wants to sell the independence in.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's home for her.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_00]: And she's just kind of trying to like grin and bury it and not let on that she's sad, but he speaks, he sings it for her.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: sure.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like looking back on that episode, I'm so excited to get to it in the rewatch club because it's like that moment when the real life's like shoved out of the tree is like the baby bird.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, baby bird.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_00]: Who's out grown shoved on that?
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: To go for her own dreams, but nothing is for sure.
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: You just you just jump as it says at the end.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: You just jump.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_00]: So the next one is secrets and loans, season two episode 11, famously one of our favorite episodes.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_00]: And he sings, I can't wait to see if it's true in regards to no plot just vibes.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I love this and I spoke to this in our episode on Tuesday.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: I love that he does a cover of be true to your school by the beach boy.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_00]: I love that beach boys.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: Would they be a fun
- 23:43[SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, I love like this idea of him covering it, like acoustically.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think that my life would be a blend of like sex in the city music and and this like acoustic cover.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: I thought you could say the beach boys and the beach boys.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: diversity in the Beach Boys.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: Very specific.
- 24:03[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_00]: But I love that this is kind of surrounding the idea of high school activities, her cheerleader life, be true to your school, and it is the transition between her doing her cheerleader routine and then brain meeting her, being like, hey, I don't really understand this, but I support you.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: which is maybe being true to friends, but we do call secrets and loans and no plot just vibe and him singing this as part of that vibe.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he definitely that I feel like in an episode that is
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe not just fives, that one is just fives, no fun.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_01]: But in other episodes that does have plot and fives, I feel like usually when he's there, it's like a, he adds to the like overall feeling of stars hollow, the aesthetic, like it's just, I feel like stars hollow would be hollow without having to turn that one.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then the last episode he does in season two is Den on Goals and Vegetables.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_00]: And he is strumming along as the girl he's walked through town after learning that Luke's Uncle passed.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: And he sings a cover of Wake Me Up Before You Go Go by Wham.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: And we talked about this in the episode on Tuesday because I was like, yeah, it's actually kind of like, is this about death like Wake Me Up Before You Go?
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_00]: And he was like,
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, baby.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, if we can give superlatives to the most confusing edition, it's the fun.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: It is fun.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: It is fun.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's just singing, maybe they just loved where I'm.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe they did.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, I understand.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_01]: What a fun song!
- 25:38[SPEAKER_01]: What an interesting song, though, just saying after you learn that someone's uncle has died.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I thought maybe it was about waking you up before you die.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: Oh.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: Don't leave me.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: Hang on.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: It just doesn't roll up at the time, by the same way.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: But this is also the episode where we kind of get this really interesting full circle moment at the town meeting because famously the second town troupe door comes back as a second vegetable seller.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_00]: And Taylor, a vegetable seller, a farmer's market, a farmer's market, and Taylor is very upset.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_00]: Mad, mad, big mad.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_00]: And so he's turning to the town troubadour to help him out.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: And he's like, hey, you left me twist him for a long time before you gave me my rights as a town troubadour.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: I even run a song about it.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: And Laura likes it.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's called Taylor left me twisting.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: And he sings a little bit of it.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I love it.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: Taylor.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_00]: Interesting, he's in my eye, I'm a sting.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's just he's like, but, well, can't quite find the hook.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: Can't quite find the hook.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: I love the moments when they pull them into the down because there's like two parts between.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: There's really only like three main ones, but that being one of them, I just love that they consider him a part of them and no one knows this name.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: Because me too, one is guitar.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of good heart case.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: We know it.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: Moving into season three, he is in application anxiety, and he sings a song called Smile at the end as the girlys are walking arm in arm through the town, and it's an episode that really hits hard for both worry and lower lie that like, their time in this chapter of their lives is limited.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: It is coming to an end.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_00]: She is going to go to college this year.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_00]: or after this year.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: And it's very sentimental and the lyrics are smile.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's no regrets.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_00]: The years wash through our hands.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then you never see tomorrow coming.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_00]: You only feel the wake of it.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then it kind of launches us.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: He sings it acoustically and it launches us into the fully produced version of the song, which I thought was really cool.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_00]: I like when they do the camera pans up.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought that that was a really beautiful and sentimental moment.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, especially after this whole episode being about anxiety, the leading to applications and the future in various ways for Lorelai and Rory and to end it with this sentiment that just smile.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the years ahead.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they will come.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: Which we always knew they would.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sure.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_00]: And then we see him at the end of season three and those are Strings Pinocchio, the finale, where he opens the episode with a cover of Peace Train by Kat Stevens.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: He's like, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: And the girlies come by and kind of like disrupt him.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: He's just singing with their backfax on.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he just said peace.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_01]: Is it he is?
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: And they come in like a different kind of chaos train.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_01]: Come, yeah, it's true.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: They come in like a completely different train.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: The next episode that he's in, I love, it's in season four, it's the festival of living art season four episode seven because he doesn't sing he's just an actor in this and this is of course when they're doing the festival of living art as is the title as is the title and actually I think they call it the festival of living pictures and he is playing Judas in the last supper and famously Kirk is Jesus and he hates him.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_01]: That's like the best part is like no one refers to him.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: My name.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: No cuz like he knows he knows Kirk.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_01]: He knows Andrew like they know everybody.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but like no one is referring to him by his name They're calling him Judas the next episode that he's in is season four episode 13 Nagamadi is where they found the nostalgic gospels and I
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: Love.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's fun.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: This is when he sings probably one of his most notable songs from Gilmore Girls, which is Mona Lisa.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, everybody knows this song and he sings it with a band for the Firelight Festival, which I love because he was of course performing at the Firelight Festival.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_00]: in StarCross lovers and other strangers.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I almost called it StarCross lovers in other reasons to hate teen foreigners.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: And that's, that's our curse, really.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's what happens when you name your first episode after a very long title.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's true.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: And the lyrics are, you're the last of your kind, Mona Lisa with the wink of your eye, make it all right.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, there's more left to life, Mona Lisa, let me take you along.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_00]: And it plays behind Liz and TJ.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_00]: and then Liz and Luke, and then Laura and Luke, and then eventually leads us to the scene between Jess and Lori, where he's chasing her through the street.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: when she is like a fantastic runner.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I heard you learn to run like that.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's very interesting all the different things that are going on in this episode.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: Liz is in a stable relationship.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: She's not quite the flighty, flippy-to-be lady that she was billed as for the first three seasons.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_00]: She is, but like, you know, she's not in her own that extreme.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_00]: Heeled way.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and she's found TJ.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: Thank God.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: Thank God.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_00]: She and Luke have kind of come to a really nice resolution.
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: She apologizes for not telling him about being in contact with jazz just of course has come to get his car back and it sparks, you know, a lot of controversy in the town and with Rory, Lorraine Luke eventually have a conversation in this is of course kind of building us towards propelling us towards the two of them getting together at the end of the season.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_00]: and then, you know, to usher us into the scene with Jess, who we haven't seen since the end of season three when he famously broke all of our hearts, I really love that the lyrics of this is like, you're the last of your kind, Mona Lisa, and that's really how they treat worry.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: They really treat worry, like the Mona Lisa, like she is one of a kind, there is no one like her, she is the angel on top of a Christmas tree.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_01]: Surely, yeah.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_01]: And the reason I like this one so much, it's the only one where he is accompanied.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember a time when it's anyone playing with him, other than just him on his guitar, except for the town, second town, true, but all who comes along and just whistles with him.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: but like this is like actual other instruments are being played alongside him.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, totally.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just really beautiful.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_00]: It is so beautiful.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then he sings a song called Lily A Passion, which is a very recent song for the zeitgeist of Gilmour Girls.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's in 2004.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is in raincoats and recipes.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_00]: The season for finale.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a transition after Wrian Lane talk about like Dean and Jess and everything
- 32:15[SPEAKER_00]: and to worry walking, to Luke's to me, Laura lie, and she actually says hi to him as she passes.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: This is like, you know, when he's playing, especially in moments like presenting Laura like Omar, he's, it's kind of like he's not there, but this is a moment where she like waves at him, and she acknowledge him, like, hey, how you doing?
- 32:34[SPEAKER_00]: as she passed.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: That is so funny because like I guess that really is one of the only times the except for when they're talking to him like he's in a part of a scene.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: He's in the town meeting festival living art later on in another episode.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_01]: They don't really acknowledge him.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: They kind of just like plays along because like thinking of Rory waving at him in that instance, going back to presenting Lorelei Go More when Lorelei is going through a moment.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: If that man turned around and started playing that upbeat song, I'd be, can you not?
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, can you place them in slower?
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a sugar bar in the revival when Michelle's like, can you place something a beat?
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, that's much better.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
- 33:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then the only time we see him in season five is in the season five finale.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_00]: So we go from one finale to the next.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_00]: and not to bury the lead, but this was the moment for me on Patreon, where I was like, we need to talk to this man and we need to do an entire episode because this for me is the pinnacle of the town troubadour's purpose and use within the narrative of Gilmore girls.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_00]: So in Season 5 episode 22 of House is not home, he sings a cover of a song called Mama Tried by Murrell Hackerd.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the morning after Roy's arrest, the lyrics are, I turned 21 in prison, doing life without parole.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_00]: No one could stir me right, but Mama tried, Mama tried, Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading I denied, that leaves only me to blame because Mama tried.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: And it is such a foreshadowing moment to what we are about to get between Laura Lion Glory.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_00]: We are about to get an explosion between these two, a rift like we've never seen before, and Laura lie tried.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: She really did.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_00]: She's like, I tried to raise you differently, then this life that you've been running towards with Logan, with the Gilmors, and she runs full force ahead by the end of this episode and ends up living with the Gilmors.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's so
- 34:30[SPEAKER_00]: Beautiful.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: I loved this moment so much.
- 34:32[SPEAKER_00]: I talked about this on Tuesday.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_00]: I just love it.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's so and this was the moment This was the aha moment for me as you remember.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm hate trauma.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: I was like this is poetry We need to talk to this man
- 34:44[SPEAKER_00]: We need to do a whole episode about this.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: But what's interesting about this song in this episode is that this really is a mother daughter episode, because it's not just Rory and Lorelie, it is mostly them because Gilmore girls, but it's also laying in her mom.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: because it's like her mama tried to raise her butter, but her pleading I denied, and she wanted to go into music.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_01]: And the difference there is that Mrs. Kim ultimately gave into that, and helped her, so like their outcome was very different than worry and more lies.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: I loved that you brought that up when we were covering this episode about it also being about Lain and...
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: and her mom, because it juxtaposes these two mother-daughter relationships, which have been, you know, juxtapose against each other the entire series, but in a very different way.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and now it's like they're getting the outcome that the other one used to get.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_01]: But I would even say it's about lower line her mom, because like mama tried to raise me better,
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: And in that place, Rory is now filling it, and I think that that one is like probably the most layer of all of them, and I really love it.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's he also does it so well.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: As I told him on the episode, so many of these songs, like I just love his version of me too.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_01]: When I was younger, I didn't know who Paul Simon was.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_01]: So, he's saying that one for me.
- 36:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: When I heard Paul Simon singing out, I was like,
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: This is the trooper.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: This is the trooper.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_01]: What are you talking about?
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: So real.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: So then moving into season 6 episode 1, the new and improved lore lie.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about this in the episode on Tuesday, but the town trooper sings a song called pre-owned heart that is an original song and was never released.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but he sings it after Luke tells Patty that Patty embebet that lore lie proposed and lore lie is kind of walking through the town square and he's standing up against the
- 36:38[SPEAKER_00]: The lyrics are interesting, making you an offer still runs great looking for a brand new start, a special one-time deal on a pre-owned heart.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_00]: Very interesting.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_01]: Both pre-owned hearts also looks about to buy a pre-owned engagement ring.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_01]: That is true, that is true.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: So many layers to that one.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_01]: I do wish he had recorded it because I just really like that song.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like such a fun concept.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's just because it's from that moment that I always wanted it to be a full song available to listen.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I know.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't want to prompt it, but I would love to have like a Gilmore girl's anniversary, town chupador album.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like all the songs he played covered, songs he wanted to cover, songs that fit.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, maybe his cover of where you lead would be really good.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that'd be great.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: There she goes.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_01]: Just so many of them would be really good for the world.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_01]: All of the songs.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that'd be great.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that'd be great.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that'd be great.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that'd be great.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: Had he not been coming out with his album last week?
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: I know, yeah, what have been able to coerce him?
- 37:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, maybe that's the key to highly of our abilities.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_00]: But he's got a lot going on.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_01]: But he's going to be in the documentary.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_01]: Because I realized he was asking us very pointed questions about you guys been hearing things and we were like, I was like, I don't even know what this man's talking about.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_01]: it came out that he was involved in that.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, that's probably what he means.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_01]: This is what he was trying to like see if we knew what was going on.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would really excited to hear from him.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: Me too.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_01]: Documentary.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_00]: So then the town trip tour is in the last three episodes of season six.
- 38:18[SPEAKER_00]: Super cool party people season six episode 20.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_00]: He does a cover 40 years by house of freaks.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_00]: A million hearts a million minds have lived and died in 40 years, pray for yourself and your memories and be thankful.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_00]: We've had 40 years and this is when people start to notice him because he is a but they're starting to build this storyline towards partings, where he is going to be going on tour and opening for New England because someone noticed him in the town.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_00]: So people are starting to notice him.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_00]: and down and you can tell that the extras were also directed to notice him and stop traffic.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_01]: That one girl who walks up and pauses, she puts her hands in her pocket and kind of like leans back into it.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's like a very particular little moment that she does.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, she is the star.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: She is the main character of this moment.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: Before she moves along, but
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: I just think that this is such an interesting build-up to not only his storyline that we're getting in partings over the next couple of episodes, but also to Luke in the Oralai because especially that in the next episode, it's kind of feels like a juxtaposition against her and her parents because her mom's of course buying her the house and that's why they've been in town.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: There's also the whole thing with like Anna, where Anna,
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: It says that like engaged isn't married that it feels like she's kind of comparing herself to other people and her parents Who have been married for 40 years, but I just really I really love that one.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I also know the next one is one of your faves because in driving Miss Gilmour Season 6 episode 21.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_00]: He's he does a cover of me and Julio Dammett's Gleard by Paul Simon.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I just like a fun.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's a fun little moment that he I love him does his own songs But that one is just like a fun.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like the same one is the beach boys like he just adds his own little something something to it Yeah, totally.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: I want to I want to see you.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'd buy a CD.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_01]: I'd buy a vinyl of that.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I'm so buy a vinyl of that.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but one of my favorite uses of the town troubador is when the town troubador leaves and a ton of town troubador's flood starts hollow in famously your favorite episode partings
- 40:21[SPEAKER_00]: And, like, this is all partings.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like, compare it up against love days, he's in troupe doors.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_00]: This is also like one of the ultimate town troupe door episodes, because it's a master piece in troupe door cameos.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: There are so many town troupes.
- 40:34[SPEAKER_00]: And we go through it in our episode partings, which we did air publicly.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: If you guys want to listen to our full breakdown, we aired that a few months ago back in, I think the spring and February in February.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: And so, there are a lot of people.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_00]: But,
- 40:48[SPEAKER_00]: My favorite cameo aside from a beaver eat my thumb.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna say that we know.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: I love that what I bought you today a beaver Eight of them.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's just like there's something about his like Mitment to that I'm like Like honestly, like we keep saying lately of like win Manifesting when when the Paladino's on of all the questions.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_01]: We had awesome.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_01]: I want to be like Dan.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: Can you do that again?
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: You do it again.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_00]: You do that.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_00]: Please do that.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_00]: We do that.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_00]: Wow
- 41:18[SPEAKER_00]: So we started off for you, it was so good, but my favorite use is arguably, to maybe tie it back to the jump scare moment in presenting Laura like Omar when Grant Lee sings a la la version of his song Jubilee.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: we get Sam Phillips here, playing the role of the town trooper door and there's something so powerful about that.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a song called Taking Pictures by Sam Phillips.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: And she, the lyrics are, when I take a picture of the city, it disappears.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's only a photograph, the city is gone.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_00]: the places I go are never there.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_00]: Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: I can only picture the disappearing world when you touch me.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then it fades off and it is transitioning us out of this moment with Laura Light and Luke in the street.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_00]: Famously, they're fighting.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_00]: She gives an ultimatum.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: He says, I don't do ultimatums and she's like, I got to go.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_00]: So this is her walking away from Luke and ushering us into her knocking on the door at Christopher's Place.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: Now the fascinating part of this, which I do not think was intentional, is that the next lyric in this song is, he brought me the air of Paris in a bottle.
- 42:28[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, definitely not intentional, not intentional, but it's for me it's the, I can only picture the disappearing world when you touch me that there's like this leading us into Chris of like she's going there and her world is disappearing as she knows it and it's
- 42:49[SPEAKER_01]: It's sad, but I really sad.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: But I love that she's loving standing there because I drove it or does make an appearance.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_00]: Greatly makes an appearance.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_00]: It's only by dialogue.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't sing.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so the same as the festival of Living Art.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but you have come to say it's like a pier.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't matter.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_00]: How could you?
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: Let this happen and Taylor's like, this is your fault.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_01]: You had to go off and make it in the big time, big time.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_01]: I made $700 and got booed.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a young part of gold, my ass.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_01]: Bummer.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_00]: Bummer, summer.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: Grandly Phillips, for the town troubadour.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the town troubadour.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: Great, for Grand Lee.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_00]: He had a great job in that.
- 43:25[SPEAKER_00]: He did a great job, but I love that Sam Phillips in this final episode written by the Paladino's She is the town troubadour.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_00]: Because she really is in a lot of ways.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_00]: She, of course, if you don't know who Sam Phillips is, you do.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_00]: You do.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: You do.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: You do.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: She sings the law laws.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_00]: She sings, I don't know how to say goodbye to you.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: She sings reflecting light.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_00]: She sings so many where the colors don't go.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_00]: Where the colors don't go.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like she is Gilmore Girls.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_00]: And so to have her here is the town troubadour playing live with her violinist in the background.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: peak.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: It stands in a category all on its own because it's so poetic that she is basically replacing the town troubadour.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like musically this is one of the most important episodes in the show because it is like a reflection on
- 44:17[SPEAKER_01]: reflecting light, reflecting music, on the Paladino's taste, what was important to them because Sam Phillips feels the most important to the show, but like the troubadour is what's so important to the show too, so like to blend those together.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: Because we've got sparks, we've got Yolotango who sings my little corner.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_01]: The world, Sonic Youth, Jan Paladino, second town troubadour, we've got the, I stepped into a puddle, I'm beating from the lip.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_01]: Who I can only ever see her from the gloom of fun to red-white and blonde.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, um, I mean I see her from a film by Kirk.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_01]: Well, she is in a film by Kirk, of course.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that to have Sam Phillips there, I'm like, oh, chefs, kids, paladinos, like, nailed it.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_01]: So, this is a town troubadour episode, but if we could call Sam Phillips a town troubadour for just a moment, because she is guiding us musically throughout the show in the Lala's, on how to switch.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't until the Lala's came up on Hatch.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_01]: They're not there for much longer as this episode airs, but it is called Lala Song, Walt's number one.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_01]: I had never known that they had designations or different songs, but it took all the Walt's.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, ooh, okay.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: I know they had songs.
- 45:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they have names totally.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: But now I want to know the names of the other ones.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's a lot of songwalt's number two.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it feels like it was derivative from how to dream.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_00]: Like all of those derived from how to dream by St.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_00]: Phillips.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_00]: And so, yeah, I'd love to know how they started to differentiate them.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm, it's very interesting, but yeah, honestly like partings and the use of the town troubadores stands in a category all the time.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_00]: You troubadye?
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: And it's fascinating because with Grant Lee, again, he appears in the episode, but not to sing for us.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_00]: And it's just serious.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_00]: His mouth has been overrun.
- 46:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is my turf.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_00]: But we do see him one time in Season 7.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_00]: He is in Heybell, May is Season 7 episode 18, and it's kind of random that we get him because we haven't gotten him the whole season, and we will not see him for the rest of the series.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_00]: But at the end of the episode, I was Lorelei and Luke kind of make a men's in the midst of the Hablemese grantly walks by them and the camera zooms out, and he sings Raising the Spirit, which was a 2007 song.
- 46:42[SPEAKER_00]: So it was a very current song for the use of it, because a lot of grantly songs were either grantly buffalo songs or things that he had done in the past, like in the 90s, for season one, so to see like current things showing up was really cool.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: And the lyrics are all always at very season seven.
- 47:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they do it in ring coats and recipes.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_00]: Lily a passion was a 2004 song, Mona Lisa was a 2004 song for Nagamati.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_00]: So like they start to get more current.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's nice that they're adding something in of his implementing him in a current way.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_00]: But yes, I understand.
- 47:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was rude of me to insult season seven.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: But season three are doing it.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_01]: I get it.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: But the lyrics are, nothing's going to break your heart today.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing's going to steal your light away, even when the skies are turning gray.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_00]: So it's okay.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: I wish that they had been a little more clever.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: I wish that they had injected him into season seven a little bit more because I think that we would have felt more at home.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_00]: But he creates part of the vibe.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_01]: He really does.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't there.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, to be fair.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't in, oh, like, five.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like he was, I wasn't there until the finale, but I don't think it entirely lost its vibe, but since seven was lacking in vibes.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to do inject the troubadour.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_01]: Truly.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_00]: They didn't really know.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_00]: And they only had him as a cameo once we talked about this on Tuesdays episode in one cameo for a year in the life, but I loved what they did.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_00]: He performed a song called Winterglow and he talks about that in the episode and it was in.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_00]: winter.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_00]: No, he played a couple songs in winter.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_01]: He played a couple songs in winter.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_01]: No, he did winter glow.
- 48:17[SPEAKER_01]: And which is a song that I love.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_01]: We did talk about that in that episode.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_01]: And then a little bit later in that episode, we see a new town trooper who is a town tour or lady.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, she gets right.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's the scene.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yay.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's the true Bador.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_01]: And we find out that that is his sister, but in reality, in real life, that is Kale King's daughter, he's got off in, who she sings.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_01]: We theme song, where you would all follow with.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is just a part of the moment.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_01]: And then he sings one other song later on at the end when Luke and Laura lie meet up in town before Emily calls.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember this simply because he plays a song called Valley Winter Song by Fountains of Wayne.
- 49:04[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and I remember talking about this.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: No, I remember talking, we talked about this in our recap because you were like Fountains of Wayne.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like,
- 49:12[SPEAKER_01]: Stacy's mom you're so right.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I played blocked that out of my memory.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: No, I played like two seconds of it because I was like I don't want to get copyrighted hilarious.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_00]: I completely blocked that out of my memory.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's literally at the very end of the episode So it's like just but it is not his song the only song of his that he plays is winter glow is winter glow which is really beautiful and just puts you in them
- 49:36[SPEAKER_01]: I know I actually started making a holiday playlist already.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, I know I haven't even really truly started and I'm a Christmas and that was a very nice one I added because I was like oh it's just a lovely winter glow like I feel like that is the perfect song for winter and stars Hollow because that song plays as we see the lower-rise house all dressed up for the holidays for the first time and to have that playing it just feels so perfect and sweet.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't love it.
- 50:04[SPEAKER_01]: I know
- 50:05[SPEAKER_01]: I do wish you would have seen them in fall.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_00]: Me too.
- 50:08[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of wish she would have been playing at the wedding and Oraline Luke's.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe dream wedding.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not really sure if felt like a dream.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would have loved for him to be playing or to be a part of the musical.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, for something.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that would have been really cool.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: especially to see him and Carol King in the same room.
- 50:27[SPEAKER_01]: I would have loved that.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_01]: I would have loved for him to like audition with Sutton or something like that.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_01]: And then go with Christian Borrow.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, Larry is.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_01]: I would have loved him to be more involved with that.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you mean it would make sense because music or like, wouldn't Taylor pull in the only guy he knows with a guitar?
- 50:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_00]: That would make them a sense.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, those are all of the town troubadour sightings and the songs he sings, the lyrics he adds to the narrative.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm curious, we wanted to give out a couple of superlatives.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_00]: What is your favorite song that he sings in this entire arsenal of work?
- 51:02[SPEAKER_00]: Hard to choose.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hard to choose, but I think that my top-fave song that he sings is Mona Lisa.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_01]: Me too.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: Me too.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's so iconic.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like it fits the moment so well.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's such a good song.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's probably my favorite song of his.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like you can't make a star's holiday list without adding one.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think Mona Lisa is like so true.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, actually before we proceed, I did want to mention that before we actually meet him, Grant Lee's buffalo song, truly, truly is in cinnamon's wake.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, when like dean of worry when he like apologizes to her like all you view alone, and she's like, no, I'm so full of you.
- 51:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_00]: No way like you.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_00]: Truly, truly plays in the background because I was like, where's truly truly in this?
- 51:46[SPEAKER_00]: Because I remember it being in there.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_00]: But it's because we've not met him yet.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_00]: It plays in the background.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe he's playing his background.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_00]: We just can't see him.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he's in the bushes.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_00]: Or they're kind of in the bushes.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's in the bushes.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: this whole show takes place in the book.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_00]: But for me, yeah, Mona Lisa, for it's so good.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: But my favorite song that fits into the scene in the narrative is mopped.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like when I was going through these because we kind of those were kind of the two to proletives that we have.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, Terran, I'm going to say we're only giving out two grantee awards.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the grantee awards.
- 52:26[SPEAKER_01]: Though my runner-up for Fave was 40 years because I just love that, like I can like hear the sound effects going on.
- 52:35[SPEAKER_01]: The favorite song on David's song, he sings or as if it's into the narrative.
- 52:38[SPEAKER_01]: favorites on these scenes.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_01]: Like if I could pick a cover versus an original.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_01]: The original is Mona Lisa.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_01]: The cover is 40 years.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_01]: But the favorite as it fits into the narrative also a cover is Mama tried because it just fits so perfect.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that my
- 52:59[SPEAKER_00]: favorite cover he does is be true to your school.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_00]: I knew that would be ours.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_00]: I could have got style of your.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: I could have made a list for a moment now.
- 53:06[SPEAKER_00]: But I wanted to mention parties as like kind of a stand alone because Sam Phillips stepping into the shoes of the town troubadour for me is very special, but it is different than like the parameters we put on faves for town troubadour moments, because he is the town troubadour as established at the end of season one.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: that can only be won.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's his turf, but she does such a great job stepping into this.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_00]: I just think it's so poetic and so beautiful.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's a beautiful mom that I can't mention it.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: I, Tara, if I could have done this for me and for you, I would have said, are both of our favorites going to be monolese up.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: Both of our favorite as it's used as a narrative device is mama tried.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_01]: My favorite cover was going to be 40 years.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yours was going to be
- 53:54[SPEAKER_01]: Terras is going to be samphilips.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, yeah, alternative to untrue it or I will say that I do really love, like as a runner-up, especially after talking about it with you today to song as it fits into the narrative, mocking birds, from so much lovers and other strangers.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's really, really well done.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_01]: But Mama tried it just that way and far and beyond his song, a grandly song that fits best into the narrative,
- 54:23[SPEAKER_01]: for the cover.
- 54:24[SPEAKER_01]: But that one does fit the best.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's the best.
- 54:26[SPEAKER_01]: How do you feel about the Walmart commercial being the second town troubadour sitting there and not?
- 54:33[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, did we even ask him about that in our episode?
- 54:36[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't feel like it was nice.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_01]: Because like the second town trip would or isn't it?
- 54:41[SPEAKER_01]: He's sitting on the bench.
- 54:43[SPEAKER_00]: Is he not?
- 54:44[SPEAKER_00]: He is.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he is.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_00]: He told me.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_01]: Why wasn't the town trip door?
- 54:48[SPEAKER_01]: He could get kicked out of town.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_00]: When it was corporate.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he's made it big time.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he's got his own tour.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_01]: True Bador, tour of every town.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: True Batory.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_00]: True Batory.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I hope so because yeah, I don't know that was a very interesting choice But yeah, maybe um Walmart didn't want to pay for the song royalties
- 55:13[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, but I love it.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_00]: I loved going through these with you.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think the town trooper is such a beautiful fixture in the show that like I don't think it's talked about necessarily enough.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like we talk about the music but the the actual use of his character is so important.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_00]: And then I'm glad we spent the week talking to him, talking about him.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: It was really fun.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_00]: I love the the music sets such a tone for the show and it really does add to the nostalgic value that we put on the show.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_00]: Case in point that the playlist that you're yearning for on vinyl.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_01]: I know with Navey so good.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I would love it Because the other thing about going through this is like seeing him change like seeing his wardrobe change his hairstyle Because like I've really thought about the show changing in terms of the girlies of course
- 56:02[SPEAKER_01]: But to see him go through all of his looks, I was really fun too, because I did that thing where I like scrub through every episode of Looking For Him, and sub-getting to see him evolve was also very fun.
- 56:14[SPEAKER_01]: Well, his music really just stays true to him.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: True to his school.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I would be very interested to hear what y'all's favorite town troubadour song is, whether it's one of his songs, a cover, a song you wish that maybe he would have covered based on songs that played in the show for this vinyl that we're doing at Kickstarter four now all this time.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_01]: we're spreading rumors.
- 56:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but speaking of kicks are I don't think that we have had an episode air since the documentary got announced.
- 56:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think this is like the first episode that recordings since that happened.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's true.
- 56:50[SPEAKER_01]: Very intrigued to see where this goes too.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because like we've got Kelly.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yay.
- 56:57[SPEAKER_01]: But all of the other key players are notably absent.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's mostly, um, uh, side characters.
- 57:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_00]: Very characters.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_01]: Because he's got Dean.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_01]: We've got Liz.
- 57:10[SPEAKER_01]: We've got land, the town.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_01]: True, but also the land, Chad Michael Murray's in it.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_01]: Chad Michael Murray, Tristan, trying to call them by their
- 57:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, character names.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: In case you don't know the actors names.
- 57:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but Kelly being Emily, of course.
- 57:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm interested to see how they fill that out whether or not they're waiting to announce bigger girls, um, bigger girls being the Gilmore girls that were in Lorelie and Amy and Dan.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm interested to see how they will be involved.
- 57:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very intrigued, but is a Kickstarter, which is why I brought it up from my Kickstarter fate Kickstarter.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_01]: No real Kickstarter for this vinyl would love it though.
- 57:47[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get in touch with Grant.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we'll chat with him about it.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_01]: We'll chat.
- 57:51[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, so I'm very interested to see what comes with this documentary.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_01]: Very interested to see the connection to the show that the people have making it, which is really important to me.
- 58:01[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 58:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 58:03[SPEAKER_01]: Because I feel like that could go in a bunch of different directions.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 58:06[SPEAKER_01]: If you're doing it because it means a lot to other people, or if you're doing it because it means a lot to you.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_01]: Very different approaches.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_01]: But Terran, I love a documentary.
- 58:16[SPEAKER_00]: We famously do.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_00]: I do.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_01]: So we're very excited.
- 58:20[SPEAKER_00]: We're very excited in this one.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not just for the content, but because of the style.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:26[SPEAKER_00]: Because I don't think they've ever done a Gilmore Girls documentary.
- 58:28[SPEAKER_00]: And so I know a lot of people have been wondering, you know, curious if they're going to do different.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_00]: things for the 25th anniversary, the holiday special that Lauren has been praised.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_00]: And second year and a year in the life season two, as people have been calling for.
- 58:43[SPEAKER_00]: And the life, a second, another year in the life.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_01]: But a documentary is not something that has been now.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_01]: The only documentary styled things that we have are like DVD extras.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_01]: The DVD bonus features.
- 58:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:55[SPEAKER_00]: Which we said that we really want to do an episode about those video bonus features.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_00]: So we should do that.
- 59:00[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe next year.
- 59:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the girl Rose, he did my nails.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_01]: She goes, is there still things to talk about?
- 59:05[SPEAKER_01]: Does that show still air anymore?
- 59:06[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, girl.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_00]: Boy, they're ever.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_00]: The show is not still airing, but there are still things to talk about more to say, if you will.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_00]: Is true.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_00]: But speaking of a year in the life, we did, as we mentioned, come to a close with covering that, despite the fact that I completely forgot that currently Philips was.
- 59:24[SPEAKER_00]: in most of winter.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_00]: And we were there.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_01]: I was there.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_01]: Because you were like, founds of rain.
- 59:29[SPEAKER_01]: And you were like, they wrote a song called, and I was like, Stacy's mom.
- 59:34[SPEAKER_01]: No, I do remember that.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_01]: She's not going on.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:37[SPEAKER_00]: She's all that I wanted.
- 59:38[SPEAKER_00]: And I've waited for so long.
- 59:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's how I felt about the revival.
- 59:42[SPEAKER_01]: That we all wanted.
- 59:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I waited for so long.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_00]: And we finally got to watch it the same way that we've watched all of the Gilmore girls episodes together on Patreon.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_01]: And we have a lot of thoughts.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll have more to say on that in the next episode.
