- 0:25We will be reading the edition dated April tenth to thirteenth,
- 0:31twenty twenty six. We will be starting on the front
- 0:35page of the newspaper. First article is PCRs Bucket Contests successful.
- 0:45And on that front page we have two very large pictures,
- 0:51very well done of people with large buckets five gallon
- 0:57buckets from don't looks as if they were from lows
- 1:01and the caption reads Pike County Emergency Management Director Knee
- 1:06Jackson helps to unload and store food flood cleanup kits
- 1:12donated to Pike County Relief Services as part of the
- 1:15Buckets for March competition. And the second photo shows a
- 1:22golden bucket with three recipients and a cute little dog
- 1:28standing on top of the pile of blue buckets, and
- 1:32that caption reads members of the Pike gold Rotary Club
- 1:36display the Golden Bucket trophy the group. The group won
- 1:43the Buckets for March by donating thirty five flood cleanup
- 1:48kits to the Pike County Relief Services. Down to the
- 1:56story pc RS bucket content as successful by Terry L.
- 2:02May News Editor. The Buckets for March Flood clean up
- 2:07Kit competition, conducted by the Pike County Relief Services ended
- 2:13April sixth, the eve of the NCAA Championship Game, with
- 2:17a high level of success. According to the organizers. Pike
- 2:22County Emergency Services talked to us about the need of
- 2:27both having clean up kits ready for the time of
- 2:30disaster and having a place to store them, said Lucy Davis,
- 2:35who co chaired the contest for pc RS with Josh Howell.
- 2:43We understand the need of the families to begin cleaning
- 2:48as as soon as possible after a flood or other disaster,
- 2:54and of course we wanted to help, so we came
- 2:57up with the idea of a friendly competition, and since
- 3:01March was coming up at the time, we started thinking
- 3:04about March Madness tournament and the word basket being a
- 3:08basketball term that we needed flood baskets she continued, so
- 3:14we put two together and started reaching out to the community.
- 3:19The contest brought in sixty seven flood clean up buckets,
- 3:24which were stored at the Pike County Relief Services Warehouse
- 3:28on Chloe Road. According to pc RS President Sandy Pennix,
- 3:35this first collection effort, which lasted less than a month,
- 3:40netted the organization more than twenty five percent of its goal,
- 3:43having two hundred and fifty buckets on hand. The competition
- 3:49was a fun way to deal with a serious topic
- 3:52and was well received by the community. Davis said, we
- 3:58had several churches, school organizations, and civic groups participating. The
- 4:04Pikeville Rotary Club won the contest and was presented with
- 4:09a golden bucket trophy. The organization delivered thirty five flood
- 4:14buckets to PCRs. According to Pike County Emergency Services Director
- 4:19Knee Jackson, when he approached PCRs about collecting and storing
- 4:26the kiss, there was zero flood buckets available in the county.
- 4:32We are very susceptible to flooding. It is our number
- 4:36one threat, Jackson said. Being prepared beforehand and having supplies
- 4:41on hand that folks need when the next flood event
- 4:44happens is very important. The flood buckets are something we
- 4:48can always get from from emergency recovery agencies, but they
- 4:55take a few days to arrive. By then our folks
- 4:58are already starting to clean up. By having supplies on hand,
- 5:04we are able to be proactive. He continued. That way
- 5:08people can go ahead and get started with cleanup and
- 5:12not have to wait for somebody. Davis and Penix said
- 5:16that PCRs will continue to accept any flood cleanup kits
- 5:22as they become As they become available, other promotions are
- 5:26being considered. A list of items may include in the
- 5:29flood buckets can be found on the organization's website at
- 5:34www dot Pike County Relief Services dot org. Penick said,
- 5:43in addition to the cleanup kits, other items such as shovels, rakes,
- 5:48and squeegees will also be accepted and stored for future needs.
- 5:55Fields withdraws from race for jailer. A News Express staff
- 6:03report a candidate for Pike County Jailer has left the
- 6:09campaign field just six weeks before the primary election. On
- 6:13May nineteenth, Republican candidate Jason Fields told the News Express
- 6:20on withdrew from the race effective April seventh. Fields was
- 6:26the first candidate to file for the office after incumbent
- 6:29Jailer Brian Morris left the race to seek the county's
- 6:33top administrative position, county Judge Executive. Field served as Chief
- 6:40Deputy Pike County Jailer before recently resigning from that post.
- 6:47He said he is currently currently focusing on his canine
- 6:52training business. First of all, I want to thank each
- 6:56and every one of you who has supported me, because
- 7:00since I put my name out there to run for Jaylor,
- 7:04Field said, I am humbled by all the love and
- 7:07support I have been shown. I have decided to take
- 7:10my name out of the running for the fore Pike
- 7:14County Jailer because I have been given a great opportunity
- 7:18to advance my career in canine training and instructing. My
- 7:22passion has been traveling the country instructing canine classes and
- 7:27training dogs, he continued. That is what I am going
- 7:31to dedicate my time to. This has been a very
- 7:34difficult decision to make, but is it is once in
- 7:38a lifetime opportunity for my family and me to better
- 7:42ourselves and our future. Fiel says he wished all of
- 7:46this fellow candidates the best of luck during the upcoming elections.
- 7:52The remaining candidates in the Republican primary for jailor r
- 7:57Ricky A. Basti, Perry, Wayne Hatfield, Jeremy Todd Miller, Ronald
- 8:13Bubby Scott, and William A. White Democratic candidate Scott E.
- 8:20Bevans does not have a challenger in the primary after
- 8:23the withdrawal of Verda may Beacker just days before the
- 8:28candidate filing period ended. Pike Jaylor claims AARH three million
- 8:40dollar lawsuit is unfounded by Terry L. May News editor,
- 8:48Appalachian Regional Healthcare filed a lawsuit against Pike County and
- 8:53Pink County Detention Center in December. However, the county jailer
- 8:59claims the detention center is not liable for medical services
- 9:03in access of three point two million dollars. While the
- 9:07lawsuit was filed four months ago, official summons were not
- 9:12delivered to Brian Morris in his official capacity as Pike
- 9:16County Jailer until April second. It was accepted and filed
- 9:21in the Pike County Circuit Clerk's office April sixth, according
- 9:28to court records. The civil lawsuit alleges PCDC has an
- 9:33outstanding balance of three million, two hundred and sixty five thousand,
- 9:38four hundred and seventy five dollars. In remediation AARH seeks
- 9:43full payment of the balance accrued and accruing interest, attorney's fees,
- 9:50and a jury trial and other relief for which it
- 9:55has been entitled. Morris disputes the claim's ma mad in
- 10:01the action and said legal counsel has been retained to
- 10:04defend against the lawsuits against the statements contained in the lawsuits.
- 10:10I have not yet had the opportunity to fully investigate
- 10:13the claims made, but believe, based upon the facts alleged
- 10:18an initial review, that each of these individuals has been
- 10:24released from the jail and are no longer in custody,
- 10:27nor were there were they prisoners at the time of
- 10:31their alleged treatment by ARH. Morris told The News Express.
- 10:38It is my understanding that ARH was made aware of
- 10:43this fact prior to initiating the lawsuit. While the civil
- 10:48lawsuit filed in with the Circuit Clerks of Office claims
- 10:53the detention center and the county were in breach of contract,
- 10:57breach of implied contract, and received unjustin Richmond for receiving
- 11:04services from ARH and not rendering payment for services. Morris disagrees,
- 11:12I am unaware of any such contract being entered into
- 11:16by the jail or the county. He said, I cannot
- 11:19justify or support the payment of Pike County citizens tax
- 11:24dollars to ARH or any other entity without some proof
- 11:28being provided that these monies were rightfully owed. To date,
- 11:33it is my understanding that we have received no proof
- 11:39of these claims outside of the demand for payment by ARH.
- 11:44Morris also said it is unclear whether ARH attempted to
- 11:49build the patient's insurance providers before making accusations against the
- 11:54detention center. I intend to defend the public coffers to
- 11:59the best of my ability until such time as proof
- 12:02demonstrates that these monies are rightfully owed, Morris said. PPD
- 12:09offers safety tips for Hillbilly Day's Festival by Gary Sloan,
- 12:14staff writer. The forty ninth annual Hillbilly Days Fast is
- 12:18fast approaching. The Pikeville Police Department has several tips to
- 12:22help you stay safe and have a safe time enjoying
- 12:26the festival. Everybody enjoys Hillbilly Days in Pikeville, and we
- 12:32want to make sure everyone has a safe time while visiting. Pikeville.
- 12:37Police officer Amandamore told the News Express each year we
- 12:41stress some safety tips to make the festival even more enjoyable.
- 12:47Missing children, Take a picture of your child before they
- 12:50come to the festival, she said. Each year we have
- 12:54kids who may have wandered off from their parents. With
- 12:56thousands of people in town at the any given time
- 13:00during the festival, that can easily happen. More says, take
- 13:06a picture of your child or children with your cell phone,
- 13:09and that way, if you do get separated, you can
- 13:12share that photo with our officers and they can begin
- 13:15to look for your child. More said, it would also
- 13:21be helpful if you tell your child if they get
- 13:25separated from you, to go to the police officer or
- 13:28a firefighter and tell them they need help. More added, naturally,
- 13:34children would get separated from their parents get reunited in
- 13:37a short period of time. Leave your pets at home.
- 13:42Like I said, there are so many people in town,
- 13:46it would be best if your family if you would
- 13:49leave your family pets at home. More said. Most pets
- 13:53don't like big crowds and the pavement may get extremely
- 13:57hot for their paws. Leave them home. Will they will
- 14:00be more comfortable and you will have less to be
- 14:03concerned about and you can enjoy the festival. More parking.
- 14:07More urged visitors to be considerate of each other where
- 14:11they park. Please, when you park, be sure that you're
- 14:15not blocking a private driveway or a parking in a
- 14:18private on private property. If you do, your car may
- 14:22be towed and you will have to pay to get
- 14:25your car back. There are several area several areas to
- 14:29park near the festival area, and several places will charge
- 14:33a fee for you to park on their property. More added,
- 14:36so I suggest you come in early and find a
- 14:39good parking place. Drive carefully. With so much congestion in
- 14:45town during Hillbilly days, please slow down and drive extremely carefully.
- 14:50More said, Watch for pedestrians and for out of area
- 14:54drivers who may not know the roads very well. So
- 14:58just drive slowly and carefully. Road closures. Beginning on Wednesday,
- 15:05April fifteenth, round five pm, we will begin to close
- 15:09through traffic through the downtown area. More said. Barricades will
- 15:13be in place, and this will allow the vendors to
- 15:18move in and get set up for the festival. Medical
- 15:21help the Pikeville Fire Department will have several locations in
- 15:26downtown area where the firefighters and EMTs will be located.
- 15:30In case someone needs medical attention, More said, there will
- 15:37be a side by sides that are equipped with medical
- 15:41supplies and can transport a person if needed to outside
- 15:47immediate downtown area to waiting ambulances and transport it to
- 15:52the Pikeville Medical Center Emergency Department if needed. Be comfortable,
- 15:58Be weather aware, as we have seen Hillbilly Days in
- 16:03the past can get extremely hot, windy, and stormy. More said,
- 16:07and we've seen it cold and snowy, so dress accordingly.
- 16:11Wear comfortable shoes because you'll be doing a lot of
- 16:14walking and enjoying all and enjoy all the music, food
- 16:17and activities associated with Hillbilly Days. The main thing is
- 16:21we want everyone to have a safe, enjoyable time and
- 16:24it will need us and if you need us for
- 16:29or the fire department, we will be here to help.
- 16:32Moore said. Other tips also on a recent Visit pike Bill.
- 16:39On a recent Visit Pike Built podcast, More said visitors
- 16:45to the festival need to be careful while walking to
- 16:48and front their parking spaces and be observant of all
- 16:52traffic One thing she suggested was for parents to hold
- 16:56their children's hands and to have children walk on the
- 16:59inside of the sidewalk to avoid falling into traffic. Staying
- 17:04hydrated is also very important during the festival because heat
- 17:08and increased activity during the festival, Moore said. Festival goalers
