Latest / Making Everyday Magic: The Podcast / Homeschool Is Not My Identity
Transcript
- 0:00I have homeschooled for ten years, and I recognize how easy it is
- 0:05for something to become your identity when you have done it for so long.
- 0:11And I think there are a lot of stereotypes that fall in with that.
- 0:15Welcome back to Making Everyday Magic. My name is Shanna.
- 0:17If you are new, here we are Huntsville, Alabama of four.
- 0:19We are in our 10th year of homeschooling.
- 0:21I have a ninth grader and a fifth grader, and today I want to talk about
- 0:26how homeschool should not be
- 0:29your entire identity.
- 0:36Before we go any further, please scroll down,
- 0:37hit the big red subscribe button, turn on that bell
- 0:39for notifications and give this video a thumbs up.
- 0:41As always, you can find me down in the comments
- 0:43or over on Instagram at Making Everyday Magic.
- 0:47I am someone who
- 0:49comes to the internet and talks about secular homeschooling,
- 0:52and I love it and it suits my family well and I'm very passionate about it.
- 0:56It is something that my youngest has done since pre-K three,
- 1:01and it is something that well, and that was, you know, when the big C happened.
- 1:05So we didn't have a choice on that one.
- 1:07And my oldest has homeschooled since a kinder.
- 1:12Since kinder.
- 1:13So the start of their formal education career, anything beyond
- 1:16like a mother's Day Out program has been exclusively homeschool.
- 1:20And because of that, it's been ten years, which is so wild to wrap my head around.
- 1:24It has been so long.
- 1:26So not only had I have schooled a very long time, I also have big kids.
- 1:30They are 14 and ten so we have done this since my youngest.
- 1:35We started homeschooling my oldest before my youngest was a year old,
- 1:39so she does not remember a time when this was not our way of life.
- 1:42She does not recognize a memory that wasn't gathered on the table
- 1:46actively, and working on things together as a family.
- 1:51And while all of that is true, I want you to know it is such a slippery slope
- 1:56when you have done something that long, when you have done something that
- 2:02is as consuming truly as
- 2:05homeschool is, because it is, every room in my house has something in it.
- 2:09Every,
- 2:11you know, stress and thought and fear of parenting magnified times
- 2:16ten because we decided to shoulder the burden of our children's education.
- 2:19And on top of that, with homeschooling comes the pressure
- 2:23of socialization and the pressure of making sure that you're doing enough.
- 2:26And is it hard enough? And are we doing what we should?
- 2:28And will they be able to transition later?
- 2:30All of those scary, scary, noisy thoughts that happen inside your brain as a parent
- 2:34or amplified times ten?
- 2:35Because not only are
- 2:35we worried about the parenting, we're worried about the schooling and
- 2:39all of the latent effects they won't get because we don't shove them into a,
- 2:42you know, a shoebox down the street.
- 2:45So I get, okay, you do a lot of research.
- 2:48You're very passionate about it. People want to talk to you about it.
- 2:50People want to know what's going on.
- 2:51It's so easy to let something like that slip into being your identity,
- 2:56and it's so easy to let the pressures
- 2:59of that slip you into being a stereotype.
- 3:02So people who don't leave the house, people who don't socialize,
- 3:05especially if you have a lot of stuff that you're trying to work through, it's
- 3:08really hard to be like, you know what? Not today. We're going outside.
- 3:11It is hard to make those decisions and easy
- 3:13to slip into the stereotypes of those things
- 3:17that, you know, those homeschoolers do that people assume homeschoolers are.
- 3:21But I like to think if people stopped my kids on the street,
- 3:26if people stop myself on the street, even though I do come here and share,
- 3:29and even though I was willing
- 3:30truly consumed over half of every single day of my life
- 3:32and almost all of my my waking hours at night,
- 3:37I like to think that if people stopped me
- 3:41on the street, first and foremost, I'm a wife and a mother.
- 3:45My name is Shawna.
- 3:46I have done here for a very long time.
- 3:49I can tell you I want to get into theatrical wing styling and wig making,
- 3:54and I can tell you
- 3:56that I have other businesses and I can tell you that I like to learn.
- 3:59I don't think homeschool would be in the top five.
- 4:02It might be, but I don't think it would be in the top five.
- 4:05And that is because homeschool is not my only identity,
- 4:07and I think that comes from my motivation is not homeschool to homeschool.
- 4:12My motivation is homeschool to educate my children and to give them
- 4:16the best possible path that I can as far as education is concerned.
- 4:20Because of that, my motivation is not to homeschool.
- 4:23So if tomorrow it changed, it is very possible
- 4:25my kids would be in the local public schools
- 4:27because that would be what was serving them best.
- 4:32I have never hung my
- 4:33hat on the fact that I am a homeschooler and strictly a homeschooler.
- 4:37I always tell people this is the choice we made because we felt
- 4:40it was the best at the time, and we reevaluate.
- 4:42Now it's more like annually, but we do have the conversations
- 4:46and reevaluate frequently.
- 4:47In the beginning, we genuinely set it every six months.
- 4:50We have like a date on the calendar when we would make sure that we were
- 4:54where we should be and not losing ground to to justify to ourselves
- 4:58people who are passionate about a good education, that
- 5:01that was the right path we were taking, that that was the path we should stay on.
- 5:05And I also like to think that if you stopped either
- 5:08one of my children on the street, I'm an actress, I'm a dancer, I like to draw.
- 5:14I just started archery, I love animals, I don't think
- 5:18short of because people always ask kids, how old are you at grade? You?
- 5:22And where do you go to school?
- 5:23Short of that, I do not think that they would
- 5:27mention hub school unless it kind of led that direction.
- 5:30And it's just because it's not our identity,
- 5:33it's a thing that we choose to do.
- 5:35And I think this is especially prevalent in conversations surrounding women.
- 5:39Okay.
- 5:39My identity is not mom, my identity is Shana,
- 5:46I am Shana, and I love all of these things and I am many faceted.
- 5:49A part of that is mom, a part of that?
- 5:52Is wife.
- 5:53A part of that is a homeschool parent.
- 5:55But my identity is
- 5:59Shawna, who has wild hair and a nose ring
- 6:02and enjoys learning new things and doing new things and traveling.
- 6:06There are just so many aspects to who I am that homeschool isn't my identity.
- 6:12And I want to remind you,
- 6:14especially if you're getting into it, if you're getting into the thick of it,
- 6:16or if you're getting into a hard season of it.
- 6:18As the weather turns and we start to stay inside more
- 6:21and the days are more gray and dreary and all of that,
- 6:24I want to remind you that homeschool shouldn't be your identity either.
- 6:28Even if you have a platform of 9000 of you
- 6:32who come and watch me talk about homeschool.
- 6:35Homeschool is not my identity.
- 6:37Homeschool is a thing I do.
- 6:39Homeschool is the thing we enjoy.
- 6:40Homeschool is a choice that we've made.
- 6:43But homeschool isn't all there is.
- 6:45It's not all there is for me.
- 6:46I've got lots of other things I can talk about,
- 6:48lots of other people I talk to, lots of other things that I pursue
- 6:51and interests and passions and all of the things.
- 6:54And it isn't for my children either.
- 6:56It's just the way they get their education.
- 6:59It is not who they are.
- 7:02And as girls, again, I think it's really, really important to stress
- 7:07that there are things that you do.
- 7:08Okay.
- 7:10Aunt and I'm really big on the ant.
- 7:12Really, really big on the ant.
- 7:13Especially when I hear little people talking about how all they want to do is
- 7:17get married, or have babies or know have babies.
- 7:21And that expectation is never put on men.
- 7:24It is never, oh, you will have children, so therefore you will not work.
- 7:27Oh, you will have children, so therefore you will not have a career.
- 7:30That expectation is uniquely for those of us who have a uterus.
- 7:35Okay. And I don't understand why.
- 7:38I don't understand why or how we got there.
- 7:40But children and family and homeschool
- 7:45and mom and dad and married and
- 7:50and and and what I'm not going to do is limit myself
- 7:55to simply being a homeschooler, regardless of how many hours a day
- 7:58it takes up in my life, regardless of how much I feel like I know about it
- 8:02now, after ten years,
- 8:03regardless of the decades worth of investment that I have made, regardless
- 8:06of the fact that I've now got two homeschoolers that I've taken into high school,
- 8:12it just is so much more than that.
- 8:15I am so much more than that.
- 8:16And you are so much more than that.
- 8:20Pick a thing. I don't care what it is.
- 8:21Puzzle lover, book reader, animal helper, gardener.
- 8:25I don't care what lawyer.
- 8:27Doctor. I'm not limiting here.
- 8:29Whatever it is that you do,
- 8:32even if it is serving an aspect of your life.
- 8:35Okay, you are like a jigsaw puzzle.
- 8:37There are a thousand pieces of you and no one of them.
- 8:40While they may be bigger for a season or bigger for a reason.
- 8:43No one of those defines who you are.
- 8:47You are many things,
- 8:50and one of them might happen to be a homeschooler,
- 8:52and one of them might happen to be a mom,
- 8:54and one of them might happen to be neither of those things.
- 8:57And that's all good.
- 8:58And that's okay, because we are people.
- 9:00We are humans. We are multifaceted.
- 9:03And if we could just accept and if we could accept a lot more,
- 9:06and from people, I love you and
- 9:10and you happen to whatever, whatever, I love you.
- 9:13And they're a little whatever.
- 9:16If we could just accept that other people might have an aunt in the same way
- 9:21that we also have an aunt, we could stop putting people in those boxes.
- 9:25And the last person I want to have put you in that box is you,
- 9:30the last person that I want
- 9:31you to put my children in boxes, especially as girls, is going to be me.
- 9:35I homeschool aunt, okay?
- 9:36Homeschool is not my identity.
- 9:38It does truly.
- 9:40And I you guys, I've spoken about martyr mothers a lot.
- 9:43Okay? It's going to lead to burnout.
- 9:45It's going to lead to resentment.
- 9:46It's going to lead to fussy feelings on either side.
- 9:49Don't box yourself in, okay?
- 9:51You can pivot at any point. You can change at any point.
- 9:54You can recognize that maybe you just need a little time away.
- 9:58And whether that's mentally time away reading a book,
- 9:59maybe that's just pouring back into yourself
- 10:01before making sure everybody else has what they need.
- 10:04Maybe it is just the expectations that we put on the people who live with us
- 10:07to do better and to do more, to stop accepting
- 10:11that they will be non-compliant, to stop accepting
- 10:14that they will be noncontributing, to stop accepting whatever it is
- 10:18that is building within you that you know is not the way that you would like
- 10:22life to go.
- 10:24Your identity
- 10:25is bigger than woman, parent, father.
- 10:28I'm not trying to offend homeschooler.
- 10:31You are more than the things you do and the pieces that make you a whole.
- 10:36Okay guys,
- 10:38I hope that you found any of this helpful, entertaining, or informative.

- 10:49And I just want to remind you if you're feeling any of these ways.
- 10:54There are a lot of resources out there.
- 10:55There are a lot of helplines if I can remember.
- 10:57I will try to drop one down in the description box below,
- 11:01but everybody should be happy where they are.
- 11:03Okay, and maybe you are really passionate about homeschool right now.
- 11:05You just learned a whole bunch of stuff and that you get a little fixated
- 11:08and it is like, you know,
- 11:09I always liken it to Diet Coke drinkers or marathon runners, and maybe that's
- 11:12just your season right now and that's great,
- 11:15but don't let it be your whole identity
- 11:18together.
- 11:19Let's keep making everyday magic.
