- 0:09Speaker 1: Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the book of
- 0:11Speaker 1: Exodus with Exodus 35. Welcome to the Bible Study Podcast.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I'm your host, Chris Christensen. We're going to do some
- 0:26Speaker 1: more Sabbath regulations, materials for the tabernacle, and talk about
- 0:31Speaker 1: some of the people who did all this work, but
- 0:33Speaker 1: first a word from this sponsor. Exodus 35, Sabbath Regulations.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them,
- 0:42Speaker 1: these are the things the Lord has commanded you to do.
- 0:45Speaker 1: For six days work is to be done, but the
- 0:47Speaker 1: seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of
- 0:50Speaker 1: Sabbath rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on
- 0:54Speaker 1: it is to be put to death. Do not light
- 0:56Speaker 1: a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.
- 1:00Speaker 1: It's interesting, this just one short little paragraph. Now, the
- 1:05Speaker 1: Jewish leaders, the teachers, will expand on Sabbath law. And
- 1:10Speaker 1: by the time we get to Jesus' time in the
- 1:11Speaker 1: New Testament, it'll get a little crazy what the rules
- 1:15Speaker 1: are for Sabbath. And Jesus will rein it in a bit,
- 1:18Speaker 1: saying that the Sabbath is made for man, not man
- 1:21Speaker 1: for the Sabbath. That God put this regulation in place
- 1:25Speaker 1: because we need rest. That that is the purpose of Sabbath.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Materials for the tabernacle. Moses said to the whole Israelite community,
- 1:36Speaker 1: this is what the Lord has commanded. From what you have,
- 1:39Speaker 1: take an offering for the Lord. Everyone who is willing
- 1:42Speaker 1: is to bring to the Lord an offering of gold, silver,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and bronze, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine linen,
- 1:50Speaker 1: goat hair, ram skins dyed red, and another type of
- 1:54Speaker 1: durable leather, acacia wood, olive oil for the light, spices
- 1:59Speaker 1: for the anointing, oil and for fragrant incense and onyx
- 2:03Speaker 1: stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod
- 2:06Speaker 1: and breast place. It's interesting that they would have these
- 2:11Speaker 1: things with them. My impression is as they left Egypt,
- 2:15Speaker 1: they really left with a haul that they're having some,
- 2:19Speaker 1: you know, of these blue and purple and scarlet yarn.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So these are important and expensive colors and, The dyes
- 2:27Speaker 1: from the purple, for instance, that the Phoenicians will take
- 2:30Speaker 1: their names from is from a sea snail. And it's
- 2:33Speaker 1: hard to get. And it remains expensive into the next millennium,
- 2:39Speaker 1: into the time of the early church. For instance, we
- 2:42Speaker 1: hear references of so-and-so being a dyer of purple. And
- 2:46Speaker 1: acacia wood and olive oil and spices. So they brought
- 2:49Speaker 1: this stuff out of them. Remember, all their neighbors gave
- 2:52Speaker 1: them a bunch of stuff when they left Egypt to
- 2:54Speaker 1: get rid of them, to be done with them. And
- 2:58Speaker 1: it says, all you who are skilled among you are
- 3:01Speaker 1: to come and make everything the Lord has commanded. The
- 3:04Speaker 1: tabernacle with its tent and its covering, clasps, frames, crossbars, posts,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and bases. The ark with its poles and atonement cover
- 3:14Speaker 1: and the curtain that shields it. The table with its
- 3:17Speaker 1: poles and all its articles and the bread of the presence.
- 3:20Speaker 1: The lampstand that is for light with its accessories, lamps
- 3:24Speaker 1: and oil for the light. the altar of incense with
- 3:28Speaker 1: its poles, the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, the
- 3:32Speaker 1: curtain for the doorway at the entrance to the tabernacle,
- 3:36Speaker 1: the altar of burnt offering with its bronze grating, its
- 3:38Speaker 1: poles and all its utensils, the bronze basin with its stand,
- 3:43Speaker 1: the curtains of the courtyard with its posts and bases,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and the curtains for the entrance to the courtyard, the
- 3:50Speaker 1: tent pegs for the tabernacle and the courtyard and their ropes,
- 3:54Speaker 1: the woven garments worn for ministering in the sanctuary, both
- 3:58Speaker 1: the sacred garments for Aaron, the priests, and the garments
- 4:01Speaker 1: for his sons when they serve as priests. And so
- 4:05Speaker 1: we have all sorts of things that are needed here,
- 4:08Speaker 1: skills that are needed, right? You're going to need to
- 4:10Speaker 1: have some carpenters put together the wood things. You're going
- 4:12Speaker 1: to have people who can fashion things out of metal
- 4:16Speaker 1: for the altar and some of those things. And for
- 4:19Speaker 1: the lampstands, you're going to need people who can sew
- 4:22Speaker 1: both big sewing projects like curtains as well as fine
- 4:25Speaker 1: sewing projects like the ephod that the priests are going
- 4:29Speaker 1: to wear. All sorts of people are needed as well
- 4:32Speaker 1: as material. Then it says, Then the whole community withdrew
- 4:36Speaker 1: from Moses' presence, and everyone who was willing and whose
- 4:39Speaker 1: heart moved them came and brought an offering to the
- 4:41Speaker 1: Lord for the work on the tent of meeting, for
- 4:44Speaker 1: all its service, and for the sacred garments. All who
- 4:47Speaker 1: were willing, men and women alike, came and brought gold
- 4:50Speaker 1: jewelry of all kinds, brooches, earrings, rings, and adornments. They
- 4:55Speaker 1: all presented their gold as a wave offering to the Lord.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Everyone who had blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, or fine linen,
- 5:02Speaker 1: or goat hair, ram skins dyed red, or the other
- 5:05Speaker 1: durable leather brought them. Those presenting an offering of silver
- 5:09Speaker 1: or bronze brought it as an offering to the Lord,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and everyone who had acacia wood for any part of
- 5:15Speaker 1: the work brought it. Every skilled woman spun with her
- 5:18Speaker 1: hands and brought what she had spun, blue, purple, or
- 5:22Speaker 1: scarlet yarn, or fine linen. And all the women who
- 5:25Speaker 1: were willing and had the skills spun the goat hair.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The leaders brought onyx stones and other gems to be
- 5:30Speaker 1: mounted on the ephod and breastplate. They also brought spices
- 5:34Speaker 1: and olive oil for the light and for the anointing
- 5:38Speaker 1: oil and for the fragrant incense. All Israelite men and
- 5:42Speaker 1: women who were willing and brought to the Lord freewill
- 5:45Speaker 1: offerings for all the work the Lord through Moses had
- 5:48Speaker 1: commanded them to do. It's interesting how many times in that,
- 5:52Speaker 1: when it talks about all the things that they're gathering,
- 5:56Speaker 1: it talks about those who are willing. It wasn't the
- 6:00Speaker 1: whole community, it was those who were willing. And really,
- 6:03Speaker 1: we know that in the church today, that the work
- 6:06Speaker 1: that gets done is done by those who are willing.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And it is not necessarily the work of the whole
- 6:14Speaker 1: church community as maybe it should be, but it is
- 6:17Speaker 1: certainly done by those who are willing, those who are
- 6:20Speaker 1: doing the things behind the scenes or leading the worship
- 6:23Speaker 1: or whatever the different tasks are, locking up the church
- 6:27Speaker 1: afterwards or all of the things that have to happen,
- 6:30Speaker 1: including mowing the grass and making sure that the light
- 6:34Speaker 1: bulbs get replaced and all of those things are done
- 6:37Speaker 1: by those who are willing. And I pray that we
- 6:39Speaker 1: would be willing this week And speaking of people who
- 6:42Speaker 1: are willing, Bezalel and Oholiab. Then Moses said to the Israelites, See,
- 6:48Speaker 1: the Lord has chosen Bezalel, son of Uri, the son
- 6:51Speaker 1: of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and he has
- 6:54Speaker 1: filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding,
- 6:57Speaker 1: with knowledge, and with all kinds of skills, to make
- 7:01Speaker 1: artistic designs for work in gold, silver, and bronze, to
- 7:04Speaker 1: cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to
- 7:07Speaker 1: engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. And he has
- 7:11Speaker 1: given both him and Oholiab, son of Ahisamek, of the
- 7:16Speaker 1: tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. He has
- 7:19Speaker 1: filled them with skill to do all kinds of work
- 7:22Speaker 1: as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and fine linen and weavers, all of them skilled workers
- 7:31Speaker 1: and designers. It's interesting, even today, we sometimes think of
- 7:36Speaker 1: the skills of that are sort of more religious skills
- 7:40Speaker 1: like teaching or preaching. And we forget that God has
- 7:44Speaker 1: used artisans, people who can, in our days, paint and
- 7:50Speaker 1: design and use Photoshop and all of those things, as
- 7:54Speaker 1: well as he used these two artisans to accomplish what
- 7:58Speaker 1: he wants to do. He can use all sorts of skills.
- 8:01Speaker 1: He can use carpenters. He can use people who are weaving.
- 8:06Speaker 1: He can use quilt makers. In our day and age,
- 8:09Speaker 1: all sorts of skills, when placed in the hands of God,
- 8:12Speaker 1: can produce meaningful work. Pray that this week we will
- 8:18Speaker 1: be among the willing and we will find meaningful work
- 8:21Speaker 1: to do. With that, we're going to end this episode
