Transcript
- 0:11Today on Living on the Edge, Chip welcomes guest
- 0:14pastor John Dickerson. Biblically, when we talk
- 0:17about repentance, this is not about your perfection.
- 0:21This is about your relationship with God. Revival
- 0:25is all about relationship. This week, we learn
- 0:29that revival begins with repentance. Hello, I'm
- 0:36Dave Drewy, and this is Living on the Edge with
- 0:38Chip Ingram. We're in a new series called Hearts
- 0:41on Fire, A God Sparks Revival, with guest teacher
- 0:44John Dickerson. If you've ever thought that needing
- 0:47to repent often must mean you're a bad Christian,
- 0:51today's message may turn that idea upside down.
- 0:53John shows us why ongoing repentance is actually
- 0:57a hallmark of a mature believer and a gateway
- 1:00to real intimacy with God. He shares the story
- 1:03of Peter's greatest failure. and a tender moment
- 1:06with one of his own kids that paint a beautiful
- 1:08picture of a restored relationship. Here's John
- 1:12continuing his message titled, No Revival Without
- 1:15Repentance. Well, I want to share with you today
- 1:18three truths about this kind of repentance that
- 1:23leads to revival. Because I don't know about
- 1:25you, but when I hear the word repentance, I think
- 1:27of shame and guilt, and I kind of don't want
- 1:29to think about repentance. Maybe you feel that
- 1:31way too. So here's three things, we'll unpack
- 1:34these. First, you need to understand, biblically,
- 1:37when we talk about repentance, this is not about
- 1:41your perfection. This is about your relationship
- 1:44with God. When you view repentance through a
- 1:47lens of, am I perfect or am I falling short?
- 1:50Then it becomes very discouraging. But when you
- 1:52view repentance through a lens of, I wanna be
- 1:55in right relationship with God at all times,
- 1:58then it becomes a joyful thing. God's heart is
- 2:01to be in loving relationship with you. He invites
- 2:04you to break up the hardened soil of your life
- 2:07and your heart because joyful relationship follows.
- 2:12And that's the second thing. Repentance ends
- 2:14in joy, not in shame. If you just associate,
- 2:20maybe as you began this message, when you hear
- 2:23the word repentance, you just thought of shame
- 2:25and guilt and self -condemnation. No, no, repentance
- 2:29is all about God, you admitting what's wrong,
- 2:33receiving what Christ did on the cross and then
- 2:36him washing those things away. Repentance might
- 2:39lead through shame, but shame is not the destination.
- 2:42If you will let God break up the hard soil of
- 2:45your heart, sorrow will not be your destination.
- 2:49Well, what happens if Christians who are saved
- 2:52by grace choose to say, hey, my sins are forgiven.
- 2:55My place in heaven is secure. I'm not gonna repent
- 2:58as a lifestyle. It's too dirty. It's too self
- 3:02-condemning. I don't ever wanna repent. Well,
- 3:05when repentance is not part of your daily life,
- 3:07here's what will happen. You will stop experiencing
- 3:10God's power in your life. This is not because
- 3:13God stopped loving you. It's because the joy
- 3:17and the life of a dynamic relationship with God
- 3:20have gotten blocked by what? by your own sin.
- 3:24They've gotten clogged. Here's a great visual
- 3:27of it. If you've ever used a bathroom sink and
- 3:30you turn the water on and it's just not going
- 3:33down the drain fast enough, this is what's happening
- 3:36underneath the sink. Sink has that little curve
- 3:40there and it fills up with debris, all sorts
- 3:43of gross stuff, you know, hair and slimy stuff.
- 3:47And at first, as the debris builds up, the water
- 3:51can still pass through. But eventually enough
- 3:55debris adds up and the water can no longer pass
- 3:58through. Unconfessed sin of any kind blocks our
- 4:03ability to have a flow between us and God of
- 4:07his love, his direction, his voice. It's like
- 4:11cholesterol in an artery. It's like hair and
- 4:14gunk in a drain. And before we know it, God feels
- 4:18very far away and distant. Now the flip side
- 4:21of that, is when you confess your sin, it's like
- 4:25clearing out the drain. When you sin, don't go
- 4:28days or weeks or months, run right back to God.
- 4:33This will keep the flow of his peace, his joy,
- 4:36his power, unhindered and unblocked in your life.
- 4:39You see, repentance is not about shaming yourself.
- 4:43Does God still love you when you've sinned and
- 4:46you don't repent? Of course he does. Jeremiah
- 4:5031 verse 3 says that God has loved you with an
- 4:53everlasting love. Romans 8 verse 39 says that
- 4:57nothing, and God lists out everything you can
- 5:01think of, will ever be able to separate you from
- 5:04the love of God that's in Christ Jesus. So God
- 5:07does not stop loving you when you don't confess
- 5:09your sin. Those are powerful promises. But can
- 5:13I give you my spiritual opinion after studying
- 5:15revival for the last year in scripture and in
- 5:17history? I believe in American Christianity today,
- 5:21in the American church today, many believers
- 5:24misunderstand these promises that nothing will
- 5:26separate you from the love of God. And they take
- 5:29it as, well, then I never need to repent or confess
- 5:32anything again. Quite the opposite. The more
- 5:35you love God and understand his love, the quicker
- 5:39you will be to repent. Not because you have to,
- 5:41and not because you might lose your salvation,
- 5:44but because you want to reconcile the relationship
- 5:47with the God that you love. Ongoing repentance
- 5:51as a lifestyle is a hallmark of a mature Christian.
- 5:59You might have an inverted idea of this. You
- 6:01might think, man, if I was having to repent all
- 6:02the time, that would mean I'm a bad Christian.
- 6:05Nope, it actually means you're very sensitive
- 6:08and you realize repentance becomes a gateway
- 6:11to emotional intimacy with God. It's not about
- 6:15shame. Say, John, what's your scriptural support
- 6:18for this statement? Well, how about this? Jesus
- 6:21said, here's how to pray every day, the Lord's
- 6:23prayer. Give us today our daily bread. And? Forgive
- 6:28us our sins as we forgive those who've sinned
- 6:30against us. So Jesus, not me, Jesus assumes you're
- 6:33gonna sin more than once every day of your life.
- 6:36Sorry to break it to you. John, who probably
- 6:40loved Jesus more than any of the other disciples,
- 6:42and I would guess more than you or me, he's the
- 6:46one who wrote in 1 John 1, if anyone claims that
- 6:49they're without sin, they're lying. He's writing
- 6:54from personal experience. Again, if it was all
- 6:58about us, that'd be pretty depressing, wouldn't
- 7:00it? But our salvation doesn't depend on us. It
- 7:03just depends on us being humble enough to say,
- 7:05God, I need a perfect savior to forgive this
- 7:09sinful servant. David lived this out. Psalm 51,
- 7:14David says to God. Would you restore to me the
- 7:18joy of my salvation? God, I've been living in
- 7:20sin. I've looked to every other thing that could
- 7:23fulfill me and it has been empty and it has been
- 7:26soul crushing and I'm repenting. Would you cleanse
- 7:30me and God restore my spiritual vigor? And then
- 7:35what is the result of that? Repentance restores
- 7:38joy and then make me willing to obey you. Repentance
- 7:42leads to obedience. I asked earlier, what would
- 7:47the summary of your life be at your memorial
- 7:49service? We say she was this, or he was that,
- 7:53or he was always this, or she was always that.
- 7:56Could you imagine God himself summarizing your
- 7:59life? And according to God, the summary is, he
- 8:03was a man after my own heart. She was a woman
- 8:07after my own heart. David, the sinner, who sinned
- 8:13in some pretty spectacular ways and wrote, The
- 8:16chapter on confessing sin in scripture. How does
- 8:20God describe David in Acts chapter 13? God testifies
- 8:26concerning David, the sinner. He really sinned
- 8:30and messed up and let's all define him by that
- 8:33for eternity. No, no, that's not how God defines
- 8:36David. God's aware of David's sin, but what was
- 8:40the... pattern of David's life? What was the
- 8:43trajectory? What was the theme of David's life?
- 8:47It wasn't sin. It was that he loved God. And
- 8:52God says of David, I have found David, son of
- 8:54Jesse, a man after my own heart. This is the
- 8:59heart of revival, to love the Lord your God with
- 9:01all your heart. God, help me love you more. Make
- 9:04me a man or a woman of God that God, it would
- 9:07be true of me at the end of my life. She was
- 9:10a woman after God's own heart. He was a man after
- 9:12God's own heart. And what does that mean? It
- 9:16means that you will do everything God wants you
- 9:19to do. It doesn't say perfectly, but consistently.
- 9:23None of us will do it perfectly. You gotta let
- 9:25that go. But you do get to decide if you're gonna
- 9:27do it consistently. David's life trajectory was
- 9:33of consistent obedience, motivated, not out of
- 9:36self -righteous perfectionism, but out of love
- 9:39for God. And that's the third truth about repentance
- 9:43that leads to revival. Repentance is about going
- 9:47out to obey God. God, I break up the soil of
- 9:51my heart and I invite you to break it up through
- 9:53confession, through repentance. That's going
- 9:55to require time. You're gonna have to sit down
- 9:58and reflect, God, where have I not been living
- 10:00out your word? Some you'll know right away, others
- 10:03the spirit will reveal to you over time. God,
- 10:05break up my heart, make it tender again. And
- 10:08then as your word, the seeds of your word get
- 10:10back into my heart, I will go and obey whatever
- 10:13you show me to do. If you just try to not sin,
- 10:19you will drive yourself bonkers. You've got to
- 10:22replace the sin in your life with doing what
- 10:26is good, doing what is right. Make it your heart
- 10:29motive to serve and obey God as a way of life.
- 10:34And as you get busy doing the right things, sin
- 10:38will gradually become less and less appealing
- 10:40and eventually repulsive. If God had to choose
- 10:45between a self -centered rule -keeping perfectionist
- 10:50or an eager but flawed servant who messes up
- 10:54but is very loving, which would God choose? Well,
- 10:57we don't have to wonder because the Pharisees
- 11:00were exactly that, self -centered, rule -keeping,
- 11:04knew every verse of the Bible. It was all about
- 11:06their righteousness, their perfection. And he
- 11:08didn't invite any of them to be his disciples.
- 11:10He loved them, but their hearts were hard. Who
- 11:13did he invite? Peter, who messed up all the time,
- 11:16but had this heart of love for God. He wasn't
- 11:20perfect, but he was faithful. God chooses the
- 11:23eager, loving servant who isn't perfect. The
- 11:26story, Luke 15, of the prodigal son who messes
- 11:29up. The father loves. You're listening to Living
- 11:35on the Edge with Chip Ingram and guest teacher
- 11:38John Dickerson. We'll get back to the message

- 11:51video messages, and daily discipleship tools
- 11:54right in your pocket, ready whenever you are.
- 11:57Well, now here's John continuing today's message.
- 12:00I wanna tell you a story of Peter's spectacular
- 12:03failure. When Jesus was being crucified, Peter
- 12:08denied Jesus three times. Now it's one thing
- 12:11to have the most spectacular sin of your life.
- 12:13It's even worse if Jesus tells you, hey, here's
- 12:16how you're gonna sin in the next 12 hours. And
- 12:18you say, no, no, I'd never do that. And then
- 12:21you do. And Peter is swearing like a sailor,
- 12:25telling people he has nothing to do with Jesus.
- 12:29And then after Jesus is crucified, Peter is broken.
- 12:33He has so much shame, so much regret. The disciples,
- 12:39most of them were fishermen and they go back
- 12:41to fishing. One day they have their nets out
- 12:45and they're not catching anything. And a silhouette
- 12:48on the shore yells out over the water, cast your
- 12:52nets on the other side. They do. And immediately
- 12:55the nets fill up with fish. And they remember,
- 12:57oh, the last time that happened, oh my goodness,
- 12:59it's Jesus. And they rush to the shore. And Peter
- 13:04loves Jesus so much, he can't get to him fast
- 13:08enough. And then what follows is a painful moment
- 13:13of repentance. Jesus doesn't say, hey, Peter,
- 13:15no big deal. Don't worry about it. Not a problem
- 13:19that you denied me. He doesn't say that. Jesus
- 13:23has already died for Peter's sins, Jesus looks
- 13:26Peter in the eyes and he says, Peter, do you
- 13:28actually love me more than all these people who
- 13:31you wanted their approval? Peter says, Lord,
- 13:34you know I do. Jesus says, then go feed my sheep.
- 13:37Obey me. If you love me, obey me. Go out and
- 13:39do my work. Then Jesus asks him a second time.
- 13:43Peter, with tears in his eyes, God, Jesus, you
- 13:45know I love you. You're Lord. Then Jesus asks
- 13:49him a third time in their culture to do anything
- 13:51three times, very symbolic, very thorough, very
- 13:55meaningful. And what it meant was this hint of
- 13:57Peter, you don't love me as much as you think
- 13:59you love me. And Peter in tears says, Jesus,
- 14:02you know everything. Essentially, you know I'm
- 14:07flawed, you know I'm imperfect, but you know
- 14:08I do love you. And then what does Jesus say?
- 14:12Go feed my sheep. What did Peter then do? He
- 14:17went and built the New Testament church. repentance
- 14:20leads to obedience. God did not bring revival
- 14:25through any of the Pharisees who were self -perfect.
- 14:30God brought revival through an imperfect disciple
- 14:35who with his whole heart was honest about his
- 14:38many failures. And to emphasize that contrast,
- 14:41this moment where Jesus is waiting on the seashore,
- 14:45that entire story I told, Jesus is... standing
- 14:48there next to a fire. He's already cooked a fish
- 14:50breakfast. The guys are trying to catch fish.
- 14:52And Jesus has that whole conversation. Jesus
- 14:59doesn't berate Peter for not being perfect, but
- 15:02he essentially goes back to the heart. Do you
- 15:05love me? Now that question from God, do you really
- 15:09love me more than your mistakes? That is the
- 15:13crux of repentance. What if your greatest sin
- 15:18struggle became your greatest opportunity to
- 15:22experience the relational, unconditional love
- 15:25of God. Because instead of distancing yourself
- 15:29from God, you started to bring it to him every
- 15:32day, every mistake, and you bring it to him over
- 15:34and over again. Do you realize every failure
- 15:37is an opportunity for you to choose God again?
- 15:43And what does Satan, the enemy of your soul wants?
- 15:45He wants that when you fail, you run away from
- 15:48God. What does God want? That when you fail,
- 15:50you run to him and you just be honest about your
- 15:53shortcoming and you receive his grace and you
- 15:55live in unbroken relationship with him. In my
- 16:01life, I've learned this. Because my imperfections
- 16:04are so many, I get to make this choice for God
- 16:06over and over again. We run to God with our mistakes
- 16:14because his unconditional love is bigger than
- 16:16our failures. If you don't believe that his unconditional
- 16:21love is bigger than your failures, you won't
- 16:22run to him. You also run to him with your failures
- 16:26because the joy of a restored relationship is
- 16:29more powerful than the guilt and shame of the
- 16:33alternative, which is to hide and isolate. And
- 16:37once you're in broken relationship with God,
- 16:39you're gonna want to be away from his people
- 16:42because they're gonna remind you of what you're
- 16:45missing out on. Well, what happens after Peter
- 16:49repents for relationship? That repentance was
- 16:52all about relationship. Before Peter became the
- 16:55spokesperson for God's revival in the book of
- 16:58Acts, I would argue the most significant revival
- 17:01in human history. It started the New Testament
- 17:03church. Peter's final recorded interaction with
- 17:07Jesus is one of repentance for reconciliation
- 17:11and restored relationship. Ongoing repentance
- 17:15when it's part of your daily habit, you're making
- 17:19sure there's nothing between you and God. What
- 17:24does that lead to? These benefits, I won't unpack
- 17:27them, but if you'll start to live this way, you're
- 17:30gonna have a revived love for God. You're gonna
- 17:33have joyful friendship with God. You're gonna
- 17:36start to overcome evil in your own life and be
- 17:38used by God to overcome evil in the world. You're
- 17:41gonna start helping others spiritually and you're
- 17:43gonna experience God's power. I'll close with
- 17:47this story of one of my three kids. I'm gonna
- 17:51keep... The Child Anonymous. It involves a cell
- 17:55phone and texting, which will not surprise our
- 17:59parents of other teenagers in this room. And
- 18:01the way the story goes is that one day I got
- 18:04home and this child of mine was on their phone
- 18:08texting and Mel, my wife, was asking them to
- 18:13do chores and they're just totally ignoring her,
- 18:16completely ignoring. So then I say, hey, are
- 18:19you gonna put your phone down and listen to your
- 18:21mom or not? And this child of mine said, would
- 18:25you just shut up? Yeah, right? That was my response
- 18:29too. I thought, you know, maybe in some families,
- 18:32but not here. Here's the thing. I actually have
- 18:37a very tender relationship with that child of
- 18:40mine. We love each other deeply and it's very
- 18:43out of character for that kind of disrespect
- 18:46from that child toward me. And this might sound
- 18:51wimpy, but it really hurt me deeply. because
- 18:55we're so close emotionally, it hurt me. It wouldn't
- 18:58hurt me if a stranger said it, but it hurt me
- 19:00because we love and trust each other so much.
- 19:04Now, did I still love that child of mine after
- 19:07those harsh words? Yes. Does your father in heaven
- 19:11still love you after you sin? Yes. However, was
- 19:15my relationship practically in that moment, was
- 19:19it strained? Yes, it was strained. It was strained
- 19:25and it was choked and thankfully it didn't end
- 19:29there. About 15 minutes later, that child of
- 19:33mine found me and in the most tender way, looked
- 19:36into my eyes and said, dad, I'm sorry. I was
- 19:40in the middle of something important. My brain
- 19:42was just trying to finish the thought. What I
- 19:45was trying to say is just give me a second, but
- 19:47that's no excuse. I love you and I shouldn't
- 19:50have told you to shut up. In that moment, what
- 19:53happened? Our relationship. practically was restored.
- 19:57My love never faltered, but our relationship
- 19:59was restored. This is the kind of intimacy that
- 20:03God wants with you every day. His love for you
- 20:06doesn't change, but your sin, it does strain
- 20:09the relationship. I would have still died to
- 20:12protect that child. I would still provided for
- 20:14that child, but the relationship was strained
- 20:17and it needed to be reconciled. This is what
- 20:21you're going to learn this week in your 40 days
- 20:23devotional, learning how to daily live in ongoing
- 20:27reconciliation with God so that he's your closest
- 20:31friend and so that the joy and the love and the
- 20:35power that you've been missing out on surge back
- 20:39into your life. You're listening to Living on
- 20:44the Edge with guest teacher John Dickerson. and
- 20:47the conclusion of his message, No Revival Without
- 20:50Repentance. And to explore more of what John
- 20:53just shared, including a small group video study
- 20:56and more, go to therevivalproject .org slash
- 21:00livingontheedge. John reminded us today that
- 21:04repentance doesn't end in shame. It leads us
- 21:07back to the joy of walking closely with God.

- 21:37We recently heard from Jill, who's been a Christian
- 21:40for 40 years. She wrote, My yearning and cry
- 21:44to God in recent years has been not just to fill
- 21:47my head with more biblical knowledge, but to
- 21:49have that knowledge move me to action. Jill listens
- 21:53on the road, driving from patient to patient,
- 21:55and catches what she misses on our app. And her
- 21:58prayer? That God would plow up the ground of
- 22:02my heart and teach me to hear Him and to obey
- 22:04His voice. Well, that kind of transformation
- 22:07is what this ministry is all about. If God has
- 22:10used this program in your life, would you help
- 22:13us put it in front of more listeners like Jill?

- 22:34I want to take a moment as we close today's program
- 22:37and ask you to pause with me because we covered
- 22:41some pretty heavy stuff. I mean, John shared
- 22:44some, I mean, really straight, strong stuff about
- 22:48repentance, about the barriers that come between
- 22:53you. and your Heavenly Father. And then he talked
- 22:56about what happens when that is, and he gave
- 22:59us that great picture of sort of the clogged
- 23:02pipe that the Spirit of God, the love of God,
- 23:06your experience, that sense of God's presence,
- 23:09it just evaporates little by little by little
- 23:13when your spiritual pipe is clogged. Been there,
- 23:17and I've done that, right? And then you get distracted.
- 23:20You try to pray and you can't think of anything
- 23:22to say. You feel distant from God. And if that's
- 23:25you right now and you just tuned in, I want you
- 23:29to know that God wants to revive, restore, and
- 23:34forgive you. Not if or when you do something,
- 23:37but right now, today. Peter blew it big time.
- 23:41He betrayed Jesus. And when Jesus got with him,
- 23:44he didn't say, let me point out the five things
- 23:47you did wrong. He asked him a penetrating question.
- 23:50Peter, do you love me? Do you love me? See, all
- 23:55sin is relational. If you've broken the relationship,
- 24:00don't focus so much on what you did. Come back
- 24:03to Jesus. Clearly own, this is what I did. If
- 24:07we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to
- 24:10forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 24:15But that means you got to get real. Today, I
- 24:19want you to pray an honest prayer. Tell God what
- 24:22you actually did. Ask him to forgive you. He
- 24:25promised he would. And then I want you to get
- 24:28out your phone and text the best Christian you
- 24:30know. and say, you know, I did some things I'm
- 24:33ashamed of. I know God has forgiven me, but I
- 24:36got to process this out loud with someone I trust
- 24:38and someone who's safe. That's the next step
- 24:42for you to repentance that leads to revival.
- 24:46That's all for today. Join us again next time
