- 0:00Speaker 1: And Football and Forest powered by the Inside of the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Birds podcast. It has brought you by the Fanatics Sports
- 0:04Speaker 1: Book at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. And of
- 0:06Speaker 1: course it is the opening of the league year. Not
- 0:10Speaker 1: really kind of sort of maybe, but you don't often
- 0:14Speaker 1: see moves that get agreed upon today change. We have
- 0:17Speaker 1: had it happen. Frank Wor comes to mind, but not
- 0:20Speaker 1: too many times. And a big one today for the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. We're about to get into that. Jeff Mosher
- 0:25Speaker 1: from the Inside of the Birds podcast is here. We'll
- 0:27Speaker 1: get his reaction to all the stuff that's happening. And
- 0:30Speaker 1: of course the big one, Jeff, really Jalen Phillips thirty
- 0:33Speaker 1: million bucks to go to Carolina. It sounds like a
- 0:36Speaker 1: deal that the Eagles just could not match, and they
- 0:39Speaker 1: have to let Phillips, a guy they really wanted to
- 0:42Speaker 1: bring back, walk.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Not match because you have to have a you know,
- 0:48Speaker 2: a walkaway number and a budget for everybody.
- 0:52Speaker 3: And this is the second straight year, Mike.
- 0:54Speaker 2: That one team came and blew everybody else out of
- 0:59Speaker 2: the water for a player that the Eagles had in
- 1:01Speaker 2: their front seven. Last year it was Milton Williams and
- 1:04Speaker 2: the Patriots twenty six million a year and this year
- 1:07Speaker 2: Jale and Phillips had thirty million dollars a year.
- 1:11Speaker 3: That is hard.
- 1:13Speaker 2: There are a couple of contracts, you know, Linderbaum and
- 1:15Speaker 2: of course the one that Trent McDuffie signed on his
- 1:18Speaker 2: extension with the Rams.
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's gonna pay him thirty one million. There was.
- 1:23Speaker 2: This is a direct result, by the way of not
- 1:26Speaker 2: a lot of stars in free agency, not a lot
- 1:29Speaker 2: of game changers.
- 1:30Speaker 3: So the few that were were available got a lot
- 1:33Speaker 3: of money.
- 1:34Speaker 2: And then the future then you saw more trades being made,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and then that money that you would typically have in
- 1:39Speaker 2: free agency you spend on guys that you trade for.
- 1:42Speaker 3: So the difference is this, Mike.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Last year the Eagles had a contingency plan for losing
- 1:47Speaker 2: Milton Williams.
- 1:47Speaker 3: They had Jalen Carter, they had Jordan Davis, they had
- 1:50Speaker 3: Moro Jomo.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Right, this year you lose Jalen Phillips and now they
- 1:55Speaker 2: have to pivot to a contingency plan.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Because they just don't have an in house rue.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean thirty million dollars. I don't think anybody
- 2:01Speaker 1: out there saying, why would you lay it? Similar to
- 2:03Speaker 1: what happened last year with Josh Swett and Milton Williams.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I think everybody liked Williams. Everybody likes Sweat. But but
- 2:08Speaker 1: the amount of money they got, it was understandable why
- 2:11Speaker 1: the Eagles made the decision. This seems to fall in
- 2:13Speaker 1: the same category. They really wanted Williams back, but they
- 2:16Speaker 1: knew they couldn't pay twenty five million in this spot.
- 2:19Speaker 1: This guy got thirty million dollars to leave. So in
- 2:25Speaker 1: your mind, last year they tried to go with Milton,
- 2:28Speaker 1: excuse me, with Hunt and Smith. Did they have to
- 2:31Speaker 1: sign somebody in free agency or do they try with
- 2:35Speaker 1: Hunt and Smith again?
- 2:36Speaker 2: No, No, they have to. There's no question that they
- 2:39Speaker 2: have to. They're either going to have to address this
- 2:42Speaker 2: now with what's left in free agency, and there are
- 2:45Speaker 2: still some there are good players left. Pass rushers. There's
- 2:48Speaker 2: guys like boy A Mafe, There's guys like a dafe Owa.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I mean, there's there's some guys. Or they're gonna have
- 2:54Speaker 2: to do it through the trade market, obviously. Jonathan Gernard
- 2:57Speaker 2: from the Vikings, this is the name that's been floated
- 2:59Speaker 2: out there. He's a good pass rusher. They'll probably want
- 3:03Speaker 2: a new contract. But they're going to have to get
- 3:06Speaker 2: in on this in some form or fashion. They cannot
- 3:08Speaker 2: go into next year, and I don't think the plan
- 3:11Speaker 2: is to go into next year with just Jylex Hunt,
- 3:14Speaker 2: Nolan Smith. You know, maybe Brandon Grant coming back and
- 3:17Speaker 2: even drafting a guy is not a short shot to
- 3:20Speaker 2: come in and have an immediate impact.
- 3:22Speaker 1: All right, So then let's try to make sense of
- 3:24Speaker 1: some of the stuff about the noise around Jalen Carter.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Does it make any sense to you that his name
- 3:32Speaker 1: would come up now? Doesn't mean the Eagles are calling
- 3:34Speaker 1: people and saying, hey, give us a call. It feels
- 3:36Speaker 1: like people are doing what I did, connecting some dots
- 3:39Speaker 1: to h They might be interested in moving on from him,
- 3:42Speaker 1: Let's give them a call.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Well, that's this time of the year.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yes, as soon as you have a player of Jaalen
- 3:50Speaker 2: Carter's stature, right who Once you get back from the
- 3:54Speaker 2: combine three four or five days passes and you notice
- 3:58Speaker 2: that a player of that stature has not agreed to
- 4:00Speaker 2: a contract extension, then you're going to start having gms.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Who are you know, they're always having these conversations or
- 4:07Speaker 3: conversations at the combine I'm.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Sure calling and inquiring on what's the deal there?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Are you not extending this guy? Is he on the
- 4:15Speaker 3: trade block?
- 4:15Speaker 2: You know the Eagles don't want to give him away
- 4:17Speaker 2: for sure, And I would still think.
- 4:20Speaker 3: We talked about this on inside the Birds this morning.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I still think there's a better than chance that he's
- 4:25Speaker 2: with the Eagles than not.
- 4:27Speaker 3: But you never know.
- 4:30Speaker 2: You have to take into the account if Jill and Carter. Ordinarily,
- 4:34Speaker 2: this kind of guy is a guy that Eagles would
- 4:35Speaker 2: have locked up immediately ran ready, but you know he didn't.
- 4:38Speaker 2: He had the shoulder problem last year, shoulders problem. He
- 4:42Speaker 2: also got ejected from a game. He's had some injuries
- 4:47Speaker 2: through college, right, He's had some off the field issues.
- 4:50Speaker 2: And so before you go and commit one hundred and
- 4:54Speaker 2: something million dollars to this guy, you got to make
- 4:56Speaker 2: sure that he's going to for fill that just like
- 5:00Speaker 2: they did with Jordan Davis, right, I mean, they didn't
- 5:03Speaker 2: sign him. Maybe they picked up the fifth year option
- 5:06Speaker 2: and then they made him go prove this past year
- 5:09Speaker 2: that he was worthy of the big time extension. So
- 5:12Speaker 2: there's a chance that Jalen Carter maybe doesn't even get
- 5:14Speaker 2: an extension this year.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Maybe they wait until next year. I don't know.
- 5:17Speaker 2: There's a chance that the he does get it this year.
- 5:19Speaker 2: After the next few days they decided it's better to
- 5:22Speaker 2: do it now. But obviously, in this situation, he's going
- 5:26Speaker 2: to be a name where people are gonna call around
- 5:28Speaker 2: and say, hey, I know there's no extension, what's going
- 5:30Speaker 2: on here?
- 5:31Speaker 3: Is he available?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Obviously we'll keep an eye on that. And I would
- 5:35Speaker 1: be not shocked because of what you said the shoulder thing.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Do they trust giving him thirty five to forty million dollars?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Where does this go to? If the Eagles don't extend him.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Now he goes into the season and you're thinking, all right,
- 5:51Speaker 1: well you pay Jalen Carter, what about Jaden Jordan Davis?
- 5:56Speaker 1: What about me? And this could turn into a whole
- 5:59Speaker 1: aga type of situation at some point, and I don't
- 6:02Speaker 1: think the Eagles are all that excited about that. Brings
- 6:05Speaker 1: us to aj Brown.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Well, real quick, real quick, I just want to say,
- 6:10Speaker 2: let's I think a good barometer for what's going on
- 6:14Speaker 2: will be what happens with Morowa Jomo if he winds
- 6:17Speaker 2: up signing an extension in the next two or three days,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and that means you have Jordan Davis under extension and
- 6:22Speaker 2: Morowa Jomo under extension. It might put out a little
- 6:26Speaker 2: bit of a radar that they're not going to fully
- 6:29Speaker 2: commit to Joe and Carter, at least not this offseason.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Okay, all right, let's go to AJ Brown. What has
- 6:35Speaker 1: changed from maybe Wednesday, Thursday, Friday to now anything?
- 6:40Speaker 2: Well, I think something big has changed in favor potentially
- 6:43Speaker 2: of the Eagles, and that's Mike Evans is now signed
- 6:45Speaker 2: with the forty nine Ers. Wandale Robinson has now signed
- 6:48Speaker 2: with the Titans. Alec Pearce has re signed with the Colts.
- 6:52Speaker 2: So you tell me now that the Patriots have already
- 6:57Speaker 2: moved on from Stefan Diggs, who their playing is to
- 7:01Speaker 2: catch passes for them in two thousand and twenty six,
- 7:04Speaker 2: Because you can't go to the Super Bowl and still
- 7:06Speaker 2: have a quarterback on a rookie deal and then expect
- 7:10Speaker 2: to go back to the super Bowl when Mac Hollins
- 7:14Speaker 2: is your leading wide receiver. That's just not a realistic world.
- 7:18Speaker 2: And I'm sure Robert Kraft would never put up with that.
- 7:22Speaker 2: So to me, that only intensifies New England's desire to
- 7:26Speaker 2: get a deal done soon. Here for AJ Brown if
- 7:29Speaker 2: they're going to be the ones, and that could happen
- 7:32Speaker 2: any moment now.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Could be And you're right the peer stuff Mike Evans
- 7:36Speaker 1: three years, sixty million dollars by the way to go
- 7:39Speaker 1: to the forty nine ers. So we'll see what this
- 7:42Speaker 1: means for aj Brown. Two of the top wide receivers
- 7:45Speaker 1: are off the board, plus Wandell Robinson is off the
- 7:48Speaker 1: board as well. So what does that mean for Howie
- 7:50Speaker 1: Roseman's phone? What do you make Jeff? We talked a
- 7:52Speaker 1: little bit about this, I think on Wednesday with you.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You know, there are some thoughts of this post June first,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and there's no post June first trade, and at the
- 7:59Speaker 1: Eagle would benefit more if they trade him after June first,
- 8:02Speaker 1: but that's a tough time of the year to try
- 8:04Speaker 1: to make that kind of trade.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I know.
- 8:06Speaker 2: There was a report from Mike garralfalo of from NFL
- 8:10Speaker 2: Media and he said that how he was trying to
- 8:12Speaker 2: be very creative here in working on a deal where
- 8:16Speaker 2: some of it would be done before June first, but
- 8:18Speaker 2: then completed after. Obviously he would love to be able
- 8:22Speaker 2: to mitigate the financial ramifications of it.
- 8:25Speaker 3: There are the cap ramifications as much as possible. So
- 8:29Speaker 3: we'll see if.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Hey, listen, if there's gonna be somebody who can figure
- 8:32Speaker 2: this out, it's going to be Howie Roseman.
- 8:34Speaker 1: That is true, all right, So what happens now? It's
- 8:38Speaker 1: four to ten football at four Jeff Mosher read Blanket
- 8:42Speaker 1: Ship and Dallas Goddard have not signed anywhere. Is that
- 8:45Speaker 1: good news for Philadelphia?
- 8:49Speaker 3: I don't think. I don't read too much into that.
- 8:51Speaker 2: You know, the market is those guys weren't maybe the
- 8:53Speaker 2: upper crust of free agency for different reasons. You know,
- 8:57Speaker 2: read blanket Ship. You know, I don't think there is.
- 9:00Speaker 2: He's like one of those special free agents. Then Kobe
- 9:03Speaker 2: Dean obviously has an injury history. Dallas Goddard is a
- 9:06Speaker 2: little bit older and has some injury history.
- 9:09Speaker 3: So I think the.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Teams that wanted to commit a lot of money to
- 9:12Speaker 2: get their big time player are doing that, and then
- 9:17Speaker 2: you'll start to see the secondary market.
- 9:19Speaker 3: We'll start to settle it's out, since settle itself out soon.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah, And I definitely wou'd be interesting to see what
- 9:25Speaker 1: happens with Goddard here we just all Isaiah likely off
- 9:28Speaker 1: the board. He goes to the Giants. We saw Brian
- 9:30Speaker 1: Cook of safety. He's going to Cincinnati. So what happens
- 9:34Speaker 1: with Red Blanket ship? Keep an eye on some of
- 9:36Speaker 1: the movement there. Obviously, let's go back to Phillips here
- 9:40Speaker 1: and some of the names. Grenard from Minnesota, boy A
- 9:45Speaker 1: Mafe as you kind of mentioned him there. It's not
- 9:47Speaker 1: a great class. Did they stop you?
- 9:50Speaker 3: Can I stop you? Nature of the interview? Boy Mafe
- 9:53Speaker 3: just signed with the Bengals.
- 9:54Speaker 1: There we go as we're having this conversation, so he
- 9:57Speaker 1: is now off the board. Even strengthens what I was
- 9:59Speaker 1: about to say here. Do the Eagles go to the
- 10:01Speaker 1: next level up to Trey Hendrickson or do they go
- 10:04Speaker 1: below Phillips and just try to find someone else with
- 10:08Speaker 1: hope that Jalx Hunt and Nolan Smith take that next step.
- 10:13Speaker 2: It's a great question, Mike. I mean, you know, the
- 10:16Speaker 2: the pool is thinning out here. Mafe's off the board.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I mean, Oway is a good pass rusher, but I
- 10:21Speaker 2: don't think you put him in the jail.
- 10:23Speaker 3: And Phillips. I think what they're gonna have to do
- 10:25Speaker 3: is you're right, you're probably.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Not gonna get a player as good as Jalen Phillips.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Now you are expecting je ex Hunt to take a
- 10:32Speaker 2: step up. Well, I imagine they want Nolan Smith. Yes,
- 10:37Speaker 2: of course, they want Nolan Smith to take another step up.
- 10:40Speaker 2: You know, he's been injured, he had the adel, the injuries.
- 10:43Speaker 2: He wasn't as impactful last year as I hope. But
- 10:45Speaker 2: they're gonna have to keep it heading and hope that
- 10:47Speaker 2: the guys that they draft or whoever they traded for
- 10:51Speaker 2: continue to develop as well. I think the trademarket is
- 10:54Speaker 2: really something they're gonna have to look for.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Bradley Chubb too, another guy who.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Bradley's a good one. Yeah, I forgot to mention that
- 10:58Speaker 3: that's a good one.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Too, has ties to Fangio as well, So keep that.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Keep that in mind there now, Johana Dotson, I don't
- 11:07Speaker 1: think a lot of Eagles fans are boo who in
- 11:09Speaker 1: that he left. But if you lose aj Brown and Dotson,
- 11:13Speaker 1: is Darius Cooper a guy that they would have won
- 11:16Speaker 1: a bigger role for or would they then need to
- 11:18Speaker 1: find two wide receivers both?
- 11:21Speaker 2: I mean they I mean you can't if they need
- 11:23Speaker 2: wide receivers, they need a natural slot receiver. In my opinion,
- 11:27Speaker 2: I don't know if Darius Cooper is that even though
- 11:29Speaker 2: they would play him there last year in certain situations.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I think that there will absolutely look for him to see,
- 11:36Speaker 2: you know, have another strong camp, make a big step
- 11:39Speaker 2: next year. But the bottom line is guys under contract.
- 11:42Speaker 2: You said, assuming a J. Brown is not here and
- 11:44Speaker 2: it gets traded, would be Devontae Smith.
- 11:46Speaker 3: I mean, and.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Not only Cooper, but who's the six for seven guys
- 11:52Speaker 2: Johnny Wilson, right, I mean we're talking about there's just
- 11:55Speaker 2: not enough names here, you know, like not enough proven names.
- 11:57Speaker 2: They need to aggressively phil holes in free agency just
- 12:02Speaker 2: doesn't have to be the biggest names. A couple of
- 12:04Speaker 2: one or three year deals and then drafted that position
- 12:06Speaker 2: as well.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Jeff Boscher Football at four for the Inside the Birds podcast.
- 12:10Speaker 1: And of course they've got plenty of free agent stuff
- 12:12Speaker 1: happening here, as do we. I thought it was interesting
- 12:16Speaker 1: the Raiders. I got to give them credit for the
- 12:17Speaker 1: first time. The Raiders are like, you know what, instead
- 12:19Speaker 1: of getting like a wide receiver or quarterback, let's go
- 12:21Speaker 1: with a center on the offensive line. Tyler Lindenbaum another
- 12:25Speaker 1: big name that signs Isaiah likely the tight end he
- 12:29Speaker 1: goes to the Giants. Wandell Robinson, the slot receiver. He
- 12:33Speaker 1: goes to the Titans. So there's a couple of moves
- 12:36Speaker 1: going there. You just mentioned mafe he goes to Cincinnati.
- 12:40Speaker 1: They also get Brian Cook. So there's a lot happening. Now.
- 12:44Speaker 1: It got off to a little bit of a slow staress.
- 12:46Speaker 2: What guess what, odafe Oway has signed with the Commanders.
- 12:50Speaker 1: So I was gonna say Washington and Dallas have not
- 12:53Speaker 1: done anything.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Well, listen, I'll tell you what.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's tough for the Eagles here seeing Mafan and
- 13:00Speaker 2: Oa go off.
- 13:01Speaker 3: And I think I said to see you last week.
- 13:04Speaker 2: The teams you have to fear in free agency, and
- 13:07Speaker 2: this has become true are the teams that have quarterbacks
- 13:11Speaker 2: that they're believe in right on rookie deals. Okay, I
- 13:14Speaker 2: don't know how much the Panthers really believe in Bryce Young,
- 13:16Speaker 2: but the point is they made.
- 13:17Speaker 3: The playoffs, they won their division.
- 13:19Speaker 2: They have a ton of money to spend because they
- 13:21Speaker 2: don't pay they're not paying Bryce Young a whole lot.
- 13:24Speaker 2: The Commanders are still on a rookie deal with uh
- 13:26Speaker 2: what's his face? With Jayden Daniels. The Raiders you mentioned,
- 13:29Speaker 2: they just blew everybody the doors off the center market
- 13:33Speaker 2: because they're about to draft quarterback number one and have him.
- 13:36Speaker 2: They even paid a lot of money for Jalen Nayeler,
- 13:38Speaker 2: And you know the Eagles don't. They have a quarterback
- 13:40Speaker 2: who's getting more expensive by the day. And when you're
- 13:44Speaker 2: doing valuation versus evaluation, and you're smart, you don't just
- 13:47Speaker 2: overpay because other teams come calling for your guys.
- 13:50Speaker 3: But it is a bitter pill to swallow when these
- 13:52Speaker 3: teams and.
- 13:53Speaker 2: The Eagles were in this position a couple of years
- 13:55Speaker 2: ago too. You know when they signed Javon Argrave to
- 13:57Speaker 2: market resetting money, that's because Jalen Hurts was on it
- 14:00Speaker 2: a rookie deal, right, So, and the same thing in
- 14:02Speaker 2: twenty seventeen, they signed a bunch of free agents from
- 14:04Speaker 2: Carson was on a rookie deal, including what's his face, Alshon,
- 14:09Speaker 2: Jeffrey and a couple other guys. So the point is,
- 14:13Speaker 2: this is the way it works in the NFL. But yeah,
- 14:15Speaker 2: the Eagles are really in trouble now with this pass
- 14:18Speaker 2: rushing station.
- 14:19Speaker 1: All right, Well, we'll see what happens next. Jeff Mocher
- 14:21Speaker 1: from the Inside the Birds podcast, I know you got
- 14:24Speaker 1: to run. They got a lot going on over at
- 14:25Speaker 1: Inside the Birds dot Com, check it all out football
- 14:28Speaker 1: at for all week here on free agency.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Thanks Man, all right, Mike, thanks
